- 3:09everyone, this is your girl put trees grumble at see Book. Y'all a
- 3:15fourty three And it's another Saturday night and we are here with See Book Gallant
- 3:21Friends Chat. So if you're seeing my promo, you knows all about the
- 3:25month of August, the fiftieth anniversary of hip hop and this month I have
- 3:32all the ladies authors. But tonight we're gonna say she works hard for the
- 3:38money. So we are gonna bring up miss Sylvia Hubbard if she's gonna talk
- 3:43about her book. She works hard for the money, y'all. I know
- 3:47y'all gonna like this one. Hey, girly, Hey, how are you?
- 3:53I am great? How are you pretty good? Pretty good? Killing?
- 3:58Literally killing? Yes, you got. She's sitting at seventy one degree
- 4:02weather. I'm sitting happy at Charleston eighty five sweating. So I told her
- 4:08earliest, I am so hating on you right now. I had to go
- 4:13from my SASA. I was like, oh, my toe, I'm getting
- 4:15cold. I can't be sitting here in the interview with my toe's gold.
- 4:18Yeah, she talked about her tools cooling, y'all, I'm a sweat.
- 4:23But can y'all see the sweat? Don't be checkular me and dominion energy.
- 4:29You're gonna have a conversation about my electric Yes, great book, miss Hubbard.
- 4:35Tell us about yourself. Oh so much to tell. So I am
- 4:41a dark romance, high suspense author, which basically means I throw everything in
- 4:46the pot, mix it up, kill somebody, and then come up with
- 4:50a h G A. And I'm also a founder of Motown Writers Network,
- 4:57which is one of the largest online and offline groups in Michigan. We've been
- 5:01established since two thousand and We help authors reach their literary goals and we connect
- 5:06readers to Michigan authors. Uh, then what else do I do? I
- 5:12do speaker events, I have like my own YouTube. I do a lot
- 5:18for just I just help you know. I'm an asset instead of a liability
- 5:21in the world. So, oh my girl, I'm gonna need you to
- 5:27write that. Now, I'm gonna it's more than I love that. That
- 5:31one line. That one line I love. We got a backup something.
- 5:38Now I work at a public library. You said dark. What is it
- 5:43again? Romance? Dark romance? So now can you tell me about this
- 5:47so I can go be smart on Monday and tell about coworkers. So basically,
- 5:53it's it is a kind of cross the line, dubious consent. You
- 5:59are gonna have some dark things of sometimes tie up, tie down. It's
- 6:06a lot. It's a lot where you don't you have the open door love
- 6:11scenes. We don't hide anything. It's like you're fly on the wall,
- 6:15so you will see and feel and smell everything. It sounds like something okay.
- 6:28So at work, I'm big on audiobooks because I do a lot of
- 6:32programming and the audio books. This helped my day flow in one day.
- 6:38Yeah, that little speaker came out. Everybody hurt when I was listening to
- 6:45and they were like, only I'm sorry, but it's getting good. Now
- 6:50let me go back and ever forget. The director of my library at that
- 6:57time told me, and this is always stuck. She said, never be
- 7:00ashamed of what you read. Yeah, I shouldn't. So the book that
- 7:05I just read, woof was Wood's name, deep Throat Diva. I shouldn't
- 7:11be ashamed of that, she said. No, but just no having in
- 7:14the children's sections. It's mean I got you, yeah, get better time.
- 7:21So if I'm understanding, and I might be wrong, but Hearty Boys,
- 7:27Yes, that's what it is. A Hearty Boys series. Okay.
- 7:30The first book is She and is that she works hard for the money,
- 7:34and it's just basically to introduce these three, these four it's actually four brothers
- 7:41one it's three brothers and a cousin actually, and they have feel they have
- 7:46been cursed where if they get together or get you know, they meet up
- 7:53or try to be together, bad things happen to the point of like their
- 7:59mother ended up dying, their wives ended up dying. So they just try
- 8:05to stay apart. You know, they would love to be together, but
- 8:09they can't. On top of that they were all born with various skin conditions
- 8:13where they cannot be touched, So you're gonna meet meet Beck Hardy. Oh.
- 8:18Another thing about them is that they all have girl names. So in
- 8:22this one, his name really is Rebecca Hardy, but everyone calls him Beck.
- 8:28And that's why he is a very hard nosed because he's had to fight.
- 8:33I would expect his life of people making fun of him and his name,
- 8:39and he grew up. His other brother is like an mm A fighter.
- 8:45And then there's the oldest one, Oscar, who lives on an island
- 8:48just all by himself pretty much, not any contact or anything, so they're
- 8:54all solitary. Beck is the worst though he has no social kouth. He
- 9:01says what he want to say, and he's kind of like a bully.
- 9:05He rubs people the wrong way. But he's really good at the job.
- 9:09Was just construction supervisor, so you know, people need him on the job.
- 9:15They just don't like to be around him very long. So I wanted
- 9:20to create a guy who was just really hard to love. So everything that
- 9:24you hate about somebody, it probably beg probably is like that, And you
- 9:31know what, he would be my favorite character. I love the hard character.
- 9:35That's when people were saying. They were like, oh my god,
- 9:37I hate him, I hate him, I hate him, but oh my
- 9:39god, it was so good. He's so good. Oh god. So
- 9:43I like to create the Godzilla effect where in the beginning, yes you do
- 9:48hate that monster, but at the end you're like rooting for the monster destroying
- 9:52the city. I don't care. Yes, yes, that's that's my character.
- 9:56You would be the meanest person in the novel. I'd be at the
- 10:00and I knew it. I got your back. You know, no way
- 10:03good and well you see them street, You're like, hey, what's up
- 10:05in the book? So she works hard for the money? That is that
- 10:13the latest release in the Hearty Boys. This is the first release and the
- 10:18latest release in it. The next one will be the Oscar Story, which
- 10:24is the Hard Way and that will explain his his weird self as well.
- 10:33And then the third book will be actually the Other Brother and his Cousin,
- 10:37which will be a reverse Harem. So okay, they all work out in
- 10:43the end. The curse is stroken. Did you say Harold reverse harem?
- 10:48So that means when the woman gets two husbands instead of the husband gets two
- 10:52wives. You are so funny sheets. Look here, look at here.
- 11:01Let me, let me, let me. Friends will be happy to review
- 11:05that novel for you. They're shipping on our way and we'll make it do
- 11:09what it do. Well, that's funny because I had started writing reverse harems
- 11:15back in like two thousand and nine, before it even people. I didn't
- 11:18even know what it was called. I just knew it was. It was
- 11:22when we had the Super Bowl and Detroit and I saw Jerome Vettus like up
- 11:26close, like up close, and if you saw Jerome Vettis, you're like
- 11:31you. I just imagine an entire book and wrote it in three days and
- 11:35it was Jerome Vettus and a twin. So then I wrote it and people
- 11:45were like, oh my god, this is a and and it wasn't.
- 11:48Uh, it didn't because a lot of the reverse harems will make the guys
- 11:52go gay, and I'm like, no, I don't want. It's always
- 11:56like they have a bromance of some kind, but no gay stuff. So
- 12:00it's it's really weird how to explain that, But okay, I just say,
- 12:05yeah, don't worry, I will be weird and read it. You're
- 12:11so freak. So I mean, it looks like, you have this outline?
- 12:18How do you do that? Girl, Grace and Mercy? You know
- 12:26this book is going to be about this, this book? How do you
- 12:28authors do that? So it's kind of like you ever saw that movie Split?
- 12:33Yes, okay, so he explained all the personalities sitting in a room
- 12:39in a chair and then someone gets the light. So for authors, we
- 12:43have this room in our head. Well, for me, I have a
- 12:46room in my head and all my characters just sitting there until a story comes,
- 12:52or a plot comes, a situation comes, and then I'm like,
- 12:56Okay, you in that chair would be really good for this story. And
- 13:01then I go find the worst person that they could possibly fall in love with.
- 13:07And then I was like, okay, yeah, y'all go grab the
- 13:09light. And that's the story. Oh my god. That's how my brain
- 13:15works, and how you know whoever has the light? That's why, and
- 13:18that's why I only do one book at a time. I know authors,
- 13:20some authors do like several books at a time. But when I'm in that
- 13:24story, I am in that story. I am living their life. I
- 13:28am I have their afflictions, I have their anger. I'm like I'm living
- 13:31them So I can only be like so many people at one time, So
- 13:35I try to write like one story at a time. But since in the
- 13:39hard way, I know, like in the in the Hardy Boys series,
- 13:43I know they're brothers. So as I'm living Beck's life, I know that
- 13:46he has brothers, and I know these brothers can't be together, so I
- 13:50kind of already know their stories and how they're gonna go. That's great because
- 13:54I have one of my favorite authors, Kr Bankston, Hey, I here
- 14:00you do? Her and the other friend, Elizabeth Lashawan. They say that
- 14:07their characters be talking to them, and I have looked at posts and be
- 14:11like, oh, y'all got them. But then you know that's the creative
- 14:15being in you guys. See it is it's like a satellite telling us like
- 14:20it's some like a satellite coming down in your head and just you're literally just
- 14:31you guys. She's in the woods, I want to say. So we
- 14:33might be having a little bit of technical difficulties, but you know what,
- 14:37we're gonna take a break and we're going to bring up the commercials. Also,
- 14:43guys, remember if you want to advertise on the crew, make sure
- 14:48you send it to one of us. So we're gonna be right back.
- 14:50She's back, but we're gonna come back. You know, technical difficulties,
- 14:56it's mas stereotypes. They got to go after they go. I'm gonna miss
- 15:01around to flip the scene's will repart with what with a little touch of lates.
- 15:07Okay, y'all, I love I'm just so proud of that promo.
- 15:11Y'all just don't know how much I would like it. I was like,
- 15:13yo, like three females ladies, first anniversary. Okay, I'm sorry,
- 15:20back to let me, let me get control anto stereotypes. They got to
- 15:24go after they go, I'm gonna mess around to flip the antlo stereotypes.
- 15:28They got to go antlo stereotypes. They got to go after the antlo stereotypes.
- 15:33They got to go after they go. I'm gonna miss around to flip
- 15:35the scene's will repart with what with a little touch of latest lady first lady?
- 15:50First? We said that. They all right, so we are back,
- 15:58you guys. So I'm about to pick her author and publish your brain
- 16:03real quick. So my question now is what is the process that you go
- 16:10through to get your book published. Some people go to Kindle, some people
- 16:14do Indeed, what works best for you, well, for right now,
- 16:19what works best for me is basically the the Kindle process, So I usually
- 16:27use KDP and go ahead and publish it that way. I am in my
- 16:32car in twenty twenty four, I'm pushing more towards a draft to digital especially.
- 16:36I was trying to wait for the sale of smash words to go through
- 16:38so then i can have them all on what one platform, you know,
- 16:42cause I'm not trying to find my money like a pimp at the end of
- 16:45the month, so I'm like, okay. So I was trying to wait
- 16:48for that to finish so I can just like okay, okay. I know
- 16:52the money is coming from here. I know the money's coming from here and
- 16:55coming from here, so I'm not trying to slap nobody to get my money.
- 17:00I didn't even know they still had smash words. They do, but
- 17:03it's it actually is blending into there. I think it should be complete.
- 17:07I haven't talked to Mark Cooker yet, and I'm supposed to be talking to
- 17:11him soon. I've been trying to sit down with him to see when it
- 17:15goes through. But hopefully it'll go through by the end of the year and
- 17:18everything will be all joined in, and you know, everybody can see their
- 17:22stuff all on draft of Digital. But yeah, I'm just kind of waiting,
- 17:25and you know I can wait. I don't mind. I've been in
- 17:27this business since two thousand, so I'm just I'm like an old lady sitting
- 17:32on the porch, like, oh, darling, your book is it'll be
- 17:36okay for a couple of years. But I don't know anybody, you know,
- 17:40I just like, so let me explain to everybody. Spash words.
- 17:44Smash words. I came across that. Oh god, I can't even remember
- 17:49how long ago. It was. Not been a while, it's been a
- 17:52long time. But you know what, I loved it. Why because that
- 17:56was when you got to the nitty crittio authors. It was formated. It
- 18:00wasn't all that. It was the pure beauty bliss of authors putting the workout.
- 18:06And I loved love in the authors. Yeah, I have a wonderful
- 18:11platform. It's a wonderful platform. It's hard to get your book up in
- 18:15there. I'll pass their monsters, but they've made it a little bit easier.
- 18:18I would recommend that, yes, definitely, make sure you have an
- 18:22account with Drafted Digital and start loading your books up because they are expanding and
- 18:29they are going to be an Amazon competitor, a really great and strong Amazon
- 18:34competitor. Okay, so let me don't get us wrong see book gallant.
- 18:38Friends. We love all authors, but it was something about the hunger of
- 18:42an in the author. Yeah, it's and I love those. I love
- 18:48to push those in the authors. You know, the one where the cover
- 18:52don't look a little bit too right, but the next time you see them,
- 18:56the cover work is. I love that because I'm like somebody grow up
- 19:00and see somebody expand and you know, really taken. That's why I love
- 19:04like, you know, all these years I'm watching authors, you know,
- 19:07grow and expand, and I can usually tell now from the beginning like Okay,
- 19:12this is gonna be like a one year two year author. And then
- 19:17you know, sometimes they surprise me, but usually ninety percent of the time,
- 19:22I'm like, okay, honey, maybe you should listen to your elevators.
- 19:26That's why I come on over and do this soon dark romance like I've
- 19:33heard of it before, but now you explain it to me more so,
- 19:37how do you how do you how do you make your books stand out with
- 19:41a genre that's really fairly new. Well, I think it's always been there,
- 19:48but with the Me Too movement, honestly, you've had to put h
- 19:56warnings on things to make sure people aren't tri to make sure people aren't.
- 20:00But I think a lot of times if you read a Catherine Woodwidth or U
- 20:08Johanna Lindsay back in the day with the Fabio covers, uh, yeah,
- 20:14you were seeing a lot of dark stuff that happened. You're like, oh
- 20:19Jesus, we need to found shark because but yeah, a lot of times
- 20:26they were going in depth of describing things and doing things, and yeah,
- 20:33now you have to have trigger wines and things like that. So I kind
- 20:36of warn people it is going to get dark. So like in she works
- 20:40hard for the money, we do go into the glory hole. We do
- 20:44have bondage, we do have kidnapping, we do have very very dubious consent.
- 20:56Yeah, so you're gonna get I know, I know, but it's
- 21:03there, and I that's why I say, I want to make sure people
- 21:06aren't triggered or oh my god, I can't believe what I'm reading. So
- 21:10I'm just warning them now it's dark. It's dark, dark dark, It's
- 21:12gonna take you down those alleys your mom said, don't go wow, you
- 21:21know what that that's even more advanced at when I normally read, So I
- 21:27might have to give myself a long conversation after reading those type And then what's
- 21:36really different about she works hard for the money is that I did it.
- 21:37I kind of did a new thing where the girl was going from gay to
- 21:42straight. That was an interesting concept because a lot of times we always see
- 21:49the opposite. And I was like, well, let's see what happens if
- 21:55you know, she got out of this uh, lesbian relationship for over twenty
- 22:00years, she's been with maybe one guy previous to that, and then she
- 22:06meets this horrible guy named back, and let's teach. Can we work it
- 22:10out? You know, let's punish with the rest of these questions because I
- 22:15need to find out where I can get to my next question. So I'm
- 22:21having all kinds of thoughts and then Latan, you're sitting up here the top
- 22:23of let's go down to the rabbit hole. No, we're not going down
- 22:26that rabbit hole. Fun home to go down. It's every hole we went
- 22:32down. Look at you, Look at you. So how do you promote
- 22:38your work? You have got me. Wanted to put the books in the
- 22:42back that I need to read, and lord know there's a lot of them
- 22:47from both y'all want to join the review team, please contact me so I
- 22:51can start reading more books like this. But how do you promote your books
- 22:56everywhere, somewhere anywhere? When I first started off, I was like a
- 23:02single mom working and it was hard for me. I used to have to
- 23:04only have an hour at the library, and I'd have three kids with me.
- 23:10I'd put the baby under the chair and then let the other two sits
- 23:12in the children's section where I have one hour to go and promote online,
- 23:18run and do it, and then you know, the next day and I'd
- 23:21have like a bag of disc. That's when we had those floppy disks.
- 23:23I have a bag of disk and I have to go update my book or
- 23:27do my emails and then do the promo. So that's how I used to
- 23:30do it. And then a lot of times offline, I'm doing brochures or
- 23:34flyers. I'm leaving them everywhere. If I'm in drive through, if I
- 23:38was in a line, if we was waiting somewhere. Sometimes I'd make the
- 23:42kids stand outside the store while I'm in the store, pass these out to
- 23:47everybody you know, and you know, on Saturdays, we would hit every
- 23:55on Detroit has this mile cast, six mile and seven mile. We would
- 23:57hit all the beauty salons where everybody was getting their hair dead for Sunday morning,
- 24:03and we would just send out like flyers. I have books in the
- 24:07trunk and we'd go pass out flyers to all the beauty salons and hair salons.
- 24:12Today I do a lot more social media. I steal blog from back
- 24:18in the day. I've made my blog more of like a membership service where
- 24:21they get first DIBs on the book that I'm writing. So whatever book I'm
- 24:26writing or work in progress, members actually get to read the book as I
- 24:30write and I'm also then then that's why I recently joined Kendo Vella well like
- 24:34three years ago, and I would I joined kendcause I was doing the same
- 24:37thing on my blog as Kendall, So I did you know, I just
- 24:41moved over there and started doing it there. So yes, I was like,
- 24:45hey, I'm an old pro with this. It moved over there and
- 24:49made double the money. As long as I keep it behind a paywall,
- 24:52we're good to go. So there you go. There you go. Yeah,
- 24:56we only have about two more minutes. Okay, my my question,
- 25:02and I'm gonna go ahead and get my arm. That's some payful. We
- 25:08were gonna get this book in Soy. Now it is actually everywhere you can
- 25:14get it Amazon. Uh, it is even in Google Books. It's an
- 25:18Apple Cobo everywhere, so you can't actually get it everywhere on the book.
- 25:30You can download it immediately, start reading it and let me know how you
- 25:33light back, and then just wait for his brothers The Hard Way to come
- 25:37out by next year. We're gonna work right after this candlevella I'm working on,
- 25:41and yeah, you'll be meeting him and then all his other brothers as
- 25:45well, right telling you mean you gonna go down to Glory Hole together,
- 25:51because I'm gonna get this book. Girl here. I did like it because
- 25:56I got the glory Hole in by like the fourth chapter, like me in
- 26:00I was, I was hitting it. Oh about a fourth chapter, we
- 26:03just go down the rabbit hole. We we ain't waiting to chapter ten,
- 26:07chapter twenty. I was like, let's jump in, let's see you more
- 26:11time. Huh a girl, this is life. This is just get straight
- 26:15to hue. Okay, understandable, understandable, what is next? So he
- 26:22wanted what he want and he get he wanted. Now, so what you
- 26:26did say that he is that character? Okay, to have some conversation.
- 26:34The girl conversate away. So my last question of tonight is where can your
- 26:44readers find you? And what would you like to say to him? Okay,
- 26:48so my readers can find me, of course on my website Sylvia Hubbard
- 26:52dot com and my uh that Sylvia Hubbard dot com. And she's also on
- 27:07Facebook, you guys. And I want to say my social media and then
- 27:12Sylvia Hubbard one. And then what I want to say to the readers is
- 27:18that, of course I'll be coming out with a lot of books this year,
- 27:22not just that she works hard for the money which started at the so
- 27:33she is all over your place, you guys, this has been such an
