Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hello everyone, and welcome to what is the inaugural episode
- 0:16Speaker 1: of I really don't know it's ther boy DJ Ben,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I mean longside my man BJ kicks, and we're here
- 0:23Speaker 1: to talk some comics. As you all know, this man
- 0:26Speaker 1: right here is the legend behind comics are dope.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Myself, huh, because I don't know about legend.
- 0:34Speaker 3: But I mean, come on, fair, come on, let's keep
- 0:36Speaker 3: it real, keep it real.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The YouTube is popping, you know what I mean, doing
- 0:40Speaker 1: interviews with all kind of luminaries, you know, all kinds
- 0:44Speaker 1: of people who cause a bit of rockers.
- 0:46Speaker 3: In the comics industry.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We'll get to that. We'll definitely get to that. I
- 0:52Speaker 1: myself from DJ Ben, I mean, one of the hosts
- 0:54Speaker 1: of four All Nerds. You might know me from my
- 0:57Speaker 1: little hashtag comics I copped you know out there check
- 1:00Speaker 1: it out, and a bunch of other few things I've done,
- 1:03Speaker 1: you know, Jimmy Hinds, Purple Hayes, Osten nominated, all that
- 1:05Speaker 1: good stuff. We'll get more into that, of course, but
- 1:08Speaker 1: today we're here to talk about our four favorite comic
- 1:12Speaker 1: books from July twenty twenty five. Yeah, mm hmm, straight up,
- 1:19Speaker 1: So what do you have up first.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Oh up, first, Okay, let's let's let's go ahead. Should
- 1:27Speaker 4: should we start hot? Should we start hot? You know,
- 1:29Speaker 4: I'll put in a lighter one. Let's let's go speed
- 1:32Speaker 4: Racer Issue one.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Okay, uh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: You know this came out just yesterday, so last week
- 1:39Speaker 4: of July. It's written by David Peppos, It's got r
- 1:43Speaker 4: by David Tinto, coming from Mad Cave Studios, and it
- 1:48Speaker 4: is pretty much exactly what you would you might expect.
- 1:51Speaker 4: It is speed Racer, uh, in a comic book in
- 1:55Speaker 4: twenty twenty five. So for me, I read speed Race
- 2:00Speaker 4: Excuse me. I watched speed Racer as a kid. They
- 2:02Speaker 4: used to do like these reruns at like ten PM
- 2:04Speaker 4: on Cartoon Network. Wow, was absolutely past my bedtime. But
- 2:09Speaker 4: I would like sneak turn the TV down real low
- 2:11Speaker 4: because speed Racer was just dope. But I don't as
- 2:15Speaker 4: much as I remember watching speed Racer, I don't really
- 2:18Speaker 4: remember the plot of the of the story at all.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like it's just this dude, he's got this cool car.
- 2:26Speaker 4: His family is basically like his pit crew, you know
- 2:30Speaker 4: what I'm saying. The car can like saw people and
- 2:32Speaker 4: do all sorts of stuff, and he's racing which is fine,
- 2:38Speaker 4: but half the time he spends like just being on
- 2:41Speaker 4: the run or fighting against people that are trying to
- 2:43Speaker 4: steal the car from him. That's pretty much the show
- 2:46Speaker 4: from what I remember.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you said you don't remember the plot and you
- 2:50Speaker 1: just named it all other than you know, he also
- 2:53Speaker 1: has the mysterious Racer X and yes, that's pretty much
- 2:57Speaker 1: the plot of every episode of speed Racer. Okay, okay,
- 3:02Speaker 1: And there's a little there's a little chimp, right, and
- 3:07Speaker 1: that pretty much, you know.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I just don't remember like any overall story like, oh, no.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Very much episodic.
- 3:18Speaker 1: No, this is well before, well not well before, but
- 3:22Speaker 1: speed Racer did not as far as I remember, because
- 3:25Speaker 1: for me, speed Racing to come on reruns as well.
- 3:27Speaker 1: But they were like, I want to say, early early
- 3:32Speaker 1: morning or when you miss school you can catch speed Racer.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I can't remember exactly when it was, but I caught
- 3:37Speaker 1: a lot of speed Racer as a kid, and I
- 3:40Speaker 1: remember no plot either.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Okay, so well, this basically takes that all those ingredients
- 3:47Speaker 4: and then gives it like some heart. So as we
- 3:51Speaker 4: open issue one, speed Racer is basically like he's he's
- 3:56Speaker 4: too fast, too furious, right, because because some of us
- 3:59Speaker 4: jumped on with this second movie, not the first, right,
- 4:01Speaker 4: And I was one of those, you know, like Tyrese Ludacris,
- 4:06Speaker 4: I'm like, all right, cool, we can deal with this.
- 4:10Speaker 4: But it's like he's doing underground street racing. He wants
- 4:13Speaker 4: to be a Formula EX driver, which is the name
- 4:15Speaker 4: of the racing circuit or whatever. His dad is very
- 4:18Speaker 4: much against it. And so yeah, the first issue, we
- 4:22Speaker 4: just get this really dope like race. He's running from
- 4:25Speaker 4: the cops, he's running from whomever. Ends up at home
- 4:29Speaker 4: in a confrontation with his dad, who's like, you know, clearly,
- 4:33Speaker 4: you're out in these streets racing my car that I
- 4:35Speaker 4: told you not to be racing, you know. And then
- 4:39Speaker 4: just like in the show, you know, there are people
- 4:41Speaker 4: that are after this car. The car is of course
- 4:44Speaker 4: built by his pops, so they're after this tech that
- 4:47Speaker 4: his pops created, invented, and so there's a confrontation and
- 4:54Speaker 4: we'll kind of leave on a cliffhanger for the next issue.
- 4:57Speaker 4: But what I really enjoyed about this one though, was
- 5:00Speaker 4: like all of that heart they injected, like you you
- 5:04Speaker 4: know from the anime that you know, Speed has his
- 5:09Speaker 4: brother that died allegedly, but he didn't really die. He's
- 5:13Speaker 4: just Racer X. And that's gotta be the most jerk
- 5:16Speaker 4: thing to do, by the way, Like, like your entire
- 5:20Speaker 4: family thinks you're dead, yo.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I mean, I wonder how I felt about it as
- 5:25Speaker 1: a kid, because as an adult, it's like, Yo, that
- 5:28Speaker 1: is some wild dude, Like for real, that's you know,
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's cold blooded. He didn't like his family like that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: That's the only excuse I have for it.
- 5:38Speaker 4: No, that's the weird part, right because he ain'ts around
- 5:42Speaker 4: and around him it's his whole deal. There's no trouble,
- 5:48Speaker 4: and Racer X will just like secretly help him and
- 5:51Speaker 4: nobody knows who racor X is. It's like surprise, I'm
- 5:55Speaker 4: your dead brother, you know.
- 5:57Speaker 1: What I mean. Yeah, I never really really thought about it,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know what I mean? But it is quite true
- 6:03Speaker 1: because that is like, that's a lot of grief that
- 6:06Speaker 1: whole family holds every day of their life. The mom,
- 6:10Speaker 1: the dad, every day, can't sleep at night, you know, etcetera, etcetera.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Speed Racer. You see how then that boy is growing
- 6:19Speaker 1: up not eating and Racer is just out there living life.
- 6:23Speaker 1: You know. Fly car Fly outfit. You know what I mean,
- 6:27Speaker 1: nobody knows who he is. Everybody just like, oh, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 1: it's like.
- 6:33Speaker 4: The whole heart of you know, speed racers relationship. First
- 6:36Speaker 4: of all, Speed Racer. This man's real name, first name,
- 6:38Speaker 4: last name, Speed Racer. The whole thing with Speed and
- 6:45Speaker 4: Pops is Pops.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Is like, look, I already lost the Racer family, mister.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Racer. I mean, look, you know it's pre destined.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I made my son Speed.
- 7:02Speaker 1: You can't do much else. Bro, When your name is
- 7:05Speaker 1: mister racer, you gotta be in the business.
- 7:08Speaker 4: First of all, your last name is Racer. You're gonna
- 7:11Speaker 4: have a son named Speed, but he's not the first one.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Like the first kid gets a record, the first kid's
- 7:16Speaker 4: name is Rex.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Racer is pretty hard. That's dope. That's pretty dope, you
- 7:22Speaker 1: know what I mean. The literation always wins and road
- 7:25Speaker 1: racer wasn't working.
- 7:26Speaker 4: So but yeah, But the whole point of Pops in
- 7:34Speaker 4: Speed's relationship is like I lost one son to race cars.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lose another one.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Meanwhile, Rex is on the track every week like, nah,
- 7:45Speaker 4: I'm not dead, I'm right here.
- 7:47Speaker 1: That is insane. That's what I wonder Okay, I did
- 7:52Speaker 1: read this as well, and I enjoyed it, especially the
- 7:57Speaker 1: relationship to building between Speed and what's her name because
- 8:01Speaker 1: she's from the show as well Trixie Tricksy, which oh
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's problematic, but yeah, what I did it. I really
- 8:09Speaker 1: enjoyed what they're building there. But I wonder will they
- 8:12Speaker 1: get into this idea that Racer Rex Rex is causing
- 8:17Speaker 1: nothing but drama and grief for his family, right, it
- 8:22Speaker 1: has to.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Come up.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Because I never really thought of it. But it's terrific, right,
- 8:28Speaker 1: it's terrible.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I mean, I guess that's kind of part of the
- 8:34Speaker 4: whole point. Like Speed can't know Race Rex is brother.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Have you did you read the manga?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Like, okay, did they address it there?
- 8:44Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I have the I've you know, and people always talk
- 8:49Speaker 1: about how good the are, what Coouchy siblings, Speed Racer
- 8:53Speaker 1: is and I've tried to watch it so many times
- 8:56Speaker 1: and never really gotten through it. I don't think they
- 8:59Speaker 1: address it at all because that movie is like bright
- 9:02Speaker 1: lights and shiny things throughout. Yeah, yeah, so I doubt it.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I would. I would feel like they had.
- 9:08Speaker 3: To do it in the manga.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I would assume so, but I feel like I've never
- 9:12Speaker 1: heard anybody even bring this up before. How trifling RACEO exits, Right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's like this is something that we've been missing all
- 9:19Speaker 1: the time because I just read the issue too and
- 9:20Speaker 1: didn't think nothing of it, you know, and I know
- 9:23Speaker 1: the story, but yeah, that is so trifling, right.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Like, if you're gonna fake your death, like go move
- 9:29Speaker 4: to an island or something, don't move next door to
- 9:34Speaker 4: me and like always show up when I need something, like, oh, hey, neighbor,
- 9:39Speaker 4: here's a cup of sugar, like bro.
- 9:42Speaker 5: But also like, if you're gonna fake your death, what
- 9:49Speaker 5: let's go back to that. Why are you faking your death?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Like, and how do we even get to that point?
- 10:00Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:01Speaker 4: It's presumed that he died and was not presumed. They
- 10:04Speaker 4: show he died in a car crash.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so like why did he need to fake? Did
- 10:09Speaker 1: did he know? Okay, I get it. He knows that
- 10:11Speaker 1: people are coming after the Pops, so he's like, I'll
- 10:13Speaker 1: fake my death that way they think I'm did and
- 10:16Speaker 1: I could come after me anymore and then I can
- 10:17Speaker 1: stripe back in my pops entemies.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Okay, yeah that makes sense, But at what point do
- 10:23Speaker 4: you leave your kid in the hospital and never come
- 10:25Speaker 4: home with the body. Like what I'm saying, like for
- 10:30Speaker 4: his family, is it just like, no, there's nobody he
- 10:33Speaker 4: blew up.
- 10:34Speaker 3: In the car crash.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, nobody recovers royal service.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Yeah du that man probably looked like Deadpool under that
- 10:41Speaker 4: racer ex.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I see. Now there's so many levels to it
- 10:50Speaker 1: that I don't know if they're gonna ever get it
- 10:51Speaker 1: to in this book. But you know, like, did he
- 10:54Speaker 1: leaves somebody else's body in that car? Like?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Whose body?
- 11:01Speaker 1: I thought we were starting off.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Like we are so off the rails already.
- 11:05Speaker 4: But for as much as I'm being unserious right now,
- 11:10Speaker 4: I really enjoyed how much depth this book had emotion,
- 11:15Speaker 4: like it just I could identify, maybe not identify, but
- 11:18Speaker 4: I could. I could sympathize with every character's position. Right,
- 11:22Speaker 4: Pop doesn't want to lose another son. Speed literally is
- 11:26Speaker 4: born to race. You don't give a kid a name
- 11:28Speaker 4: speed racer, and I'd expect him to be racing cars and.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Rugs right right, And.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He pulls out the Brandon T. Jackson Speed.
- 11:39Speaker 4: He's like, we're broke, I'm broke, but he pulls that
- 11:43Speaker 4: out on his dad, like, look, man, we got all
- 11:45Speaker 4: these bills. The prize for this race is a million dollars, Like,
- 11:50Speaker 4: come on, be serious, I could do this, and we
- 11:52Speaker 4: have this car that we could use that you know,
- 11:56Speaker 4: nobody can beat this car. So it's like okay, cool already.
- 12:00Speaker 4: This is way more depth than I remember from the
- 12:03Speaker 4: cartoon at all.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Definitely, so I don't remember money issues, but it was
- 12:07Speaker 1: always lighthearted money issues, you know. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Yeah, so so it's like you know, and even the
- 12:14Speaker 4: little kid, uh spritle right, he was a very problematic
- 12:18Speaker 4: character in that cartoon.
- 12:19Speaker 2: He was between him and the monkey, like just the depiction, right,
- 12:24Speaker 2: all right, yeah, I don't want to think about it
- 12:25Speaker 2: too much. Yeah, but they gave him something to do,
- 12:29Speaker 2: like because he speed Racer's little brother is basically like
- 12:32Speaker 2: the bookie, like all right, you want to bet on
- 12:35Speaker 2: my little you want to bet on my big brother,
- 12:36Speaker 2: coold to tender one whatever. Whatever.
- 12:40Speaker 4: He's collecting and giving speed his cut. Meanwhile, he's also
- 12:44Speaker 4: like managing the Instagram presence or whatever.
- 12:48Speaker 2: So it's like he's.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Got it all going on. He's the he's the shrewd kid.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Yeah, he's he's bow wow and Tokyo Drift like the Dog.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's sponsoring podcast. Oh all right, anymore speeds.
- 13:17Speaker 4: No, it was a it was a solid debut issue.
- 13:19Speaker 4: David Peppok's books are always good. The colors in this
- 13:23Speaker 4: are really good. Are reminds a lot of like, you know,
- 13:25Speaker 4: street racing, like video games. I used to play, like
- 13:28Speaker 4: Midnight Club and all that.
- 13:30Speaker 3: The art is incredible all throughout.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I was definitely I didn't I'm not sure if I've
- 13:34Speaker 1: seen that artist on anything but stunning work there.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it was a great mashup of like
- 13:42Speaker 4: the Western and Eastern stuff because it's it was a
- 13:45Speaker 4: manga first, and it's got that sort of visual home
- 13:49Speaker 4: of a manga, but it's got the colors, it's got
- 13:51Speaker 4: the pair it's like everything.
- 13:53Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Colors reminded me of like far Setter, the yeah type
- 14:00Speaker 1: of like really advanced coloring techniques and stuff. Yeah, really nice,
- 14:05Speaker 1: really layered, right m hm.
- 14:08Speaker 2: So yeah, that's all I got was it was dope.
- 14:11Speaker 3: You should buy it, all right, definitely got that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: First up, I'm gonna start off with something. I think
- 14:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it really dark. Yes, you know, since
- 14:21Speaker 1: we decided to start you know, light and then went dark.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna just go dark and then see if he
- 14:26Speaker 1: can go light. My first pick is a book that
- 14:29Speaker 1: I'd forgotten about. I read the first issue when it
- 14:32Speaker 1: came out, you know, four months ago, and then just
- 14:35Speaker 1: pretty much forgotten and then saw that the last issue
- 14:37Speaker 1: came out this week, and so I picked it up
- 14:39Speaker 1: and went back and read the other four And it's
- 14:42Speaker 1: Out of Alcatraz, which is a five issue mini series
- 14:46Speaker 1: by the Eisner Award nominated writer Christopher Cantwell. They did
- 14:50Speaker 1: a Placid Man No More and Brier Want actually read
- 14:54Speaker 1: Placid Man No More Now and Tyler Cook also Eisner
- 14:59Speaker 1: Award nominated for Harrold County and The Loansome Hunters, and
- 15:03Speaker 1: Out of Alcatraz. It definitely takes place. I want to say,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I feel like this is like a nineteen seventies, nineteen sixties,
- 15:11Speaker 1: but it's also kind of like one of those timeless
- 15:13Speaker 1: type books. And it's about four inmates who stayed from Alcatraz.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And the book really kicks off from the first issue
- 15:22Speaker 1: with the four having.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Already escaped.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And they're, you know, in Alcatraz, so they had to
- 15:30Speaker 1: estap over the seas and not all four make it
- 15:34Speaker 1: out from Trump. One doesn't even get out of the prison,
- 15:36Speaker 1: he's still stuck in there. One the other four and
- 15:39Speaker 1: then one gets dropped in the water. So it's two brothers,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and one of the brothers rose in the water in
- 15:46Speaker 1: the first issue, so the other two were trying to
- 15:49Speaker 1: make their way. They meet up with their contact on
- 15:51Speaker 1: the outside, and the things go from there. And it's
- 15:54Speaker 1: a very criminal noir book. There's FBI and a Marshall
- 16:02Speaker 1: after them. I just really enjoyed it, like right off jump,
- 16:07Speaker 1: like you're want to talk about heart and stuff, you know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you know these are hardened criminals. It really gets you
- 16:12Speaker 1: involved in everyone's story right away. Where after the first issue,
- 16:17Speaker 1: even though I forgot, I really was like, damn, this
- 16:19Speaker 1: is a really good book because it's really not the
- 16:21Speaker 1: type of book that I normally pick up all the time.
- 16:24Speaker 1: But you know, something about I was like, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: whenever I see a first issue with an ill name
- 16:28Speaker 1: and out of Alcatraz just caught me. So I was like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: let me check this out. So it got me. The
- 16:34Speaker 1: artists really nice. It looks like painted water colorish type art.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm not sure how they're doing it, but It's a
- 16:40Speaker 1: very fluid and dreamy type of story, even though it
- 16:46Speaker 1: does get very violent, very dark, you know, like I said,
- 16:51Speaker 1: criminal noir type story, la confidential, things of that nature.
- 16:58Speaker 1: The fifth issue is out this week, and yeah, I
- 17:02Speaker 1: don't want to spoil too much because it is a
- 17:04Speaker 1: limited series and you know, things do as they go.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But it's one of those uh no country for old
- 17:09Speaker 1: men type stories. Well, you know, it doesn't end well
- 17:12Speaker 1: for everyone. I'm not sure it ends well for most
- 17:15Speaker 1: of the people. You know, it just ends. Things don't
- 17:18Speaker 1: end well. You know, it just ends, as they say.
- 17:21Speaker 1: But I thoroughly enjoyed it after I caught back up
- 17:24Speaker 1: on it. Like when I was reading the issues today,
- 17:26Speaker 1: I was reading through them like I was chewing through
- 17:28Speaker 1: those issues, like, yo, I need to finish this joint,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and not just to be reviewing it tonight, but I
- 17:33Speaker 1: really wanted to find out what happened at the end
- 17:35Speaker 1: of it. So it had me from start to finish
- 17:38Speaker 1: out of Alcatraz both. I mean, all five issues are
- 17:42Speaker 1: out right now, you can check that out.
- 17:45Speaker 3: I really enjoyed that joint.
- 17:47Speaker 2: I might have to check that out in trade. They're
- 17:49Speaker 2: doing a hardcover in October.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Yeah, who's the publisher on that?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Uh?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Only Press, Yes, Only Press, shout out the Only Press. Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Definitely worth it for the hardcover because, like I say,
- 17:59Speaker 1: it's great five issues, like tight story, there's a lot
- 18:04Speaker 1: of different elements to it beyond just the criminals.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Their contact on the outside is a.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Woman who is of mixed race and white passing, so
- 18:14Speaker 1: there's that type of element in the story.
- 18:17Speaker 3: The FBI agent.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And the Marshall who are following them are actually gay lovers,
- 18:23Speaker 1: so that's also going on. So it's like everyone has
- 18:27Speaker 1: these other sides to them and multiple layers to the characters,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and all of this stuff gets involved.
- 18:34Speaker 3: In the stories they're going on.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And the last thing I want to say that I
- 18:37Speaker 1: really loved about it is it's one of those stories
- 18:39Speaker 1: where plot happens for like things just interfere, you know,
- 18:46Speaker 1: like everyone's got a plan so they get punched in
- 18:49Speaker 1: the face.
- 18:49Speaker 3: It's this type of story where.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Everyone has a plan and then everyone gets punched in
- 18:53Speaker 1: the face in various ways, and your plans just go
- 18:57Speaker 1: completely different than you what you thought you were going
- 19:01Speaker 1: to do at the start of the story, and everyone
- 19:03Speaker 1: ends up in places that I did not expect. At
- 19:06Speaker 1: the beginning of the story, and it was really great,
- 19:08Speaker 1: especially the last issue, a lot of twists to get
- 19:11Speaker 1: the characters today ending where I was like, h very satisfying.
- 19:15Speaker 4: That actually sounds like it must be a theme of
- 19:18Speaker 4: campwell because I read most of Plastic Man No More, okay,
- 19:24Speaker 4: and basically, you know, Plastic Man was a criminal. Yep,
- 19:30Speaker 4: he got these these mobster right, and so the series
- 19:35Speaker 4: is basically about how he was not really a redeemable
- 19:39Speaker 4: character necessary you know, he kind of he went straight.
- 19:43Speaker 4: You know, he's going with the Justice League, and there's
- 19:46Speaker 4: this whole thing where it's like no one ever really
- 19:48Speaker 4: took Plastic Man seriously. Like they've got these these flashback
- 19:52Speaker 4: sequences where he's like with the League and he'll bring
- 19:55Speaker 4: up like some real point and everybody's gonna last them off,
- 19:58Speaker 4: like it's like the end of.
- 19:59Speaker 2: A Super Frans episode or something, and.
- 20:03Speaker 1: He's just like yo, immediately yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 4: And so so like those that's happening in the flashback sequences.
- 20:09Speaker 4: But what the what drives the plot forward is Plastic
- 20:14Speaker 4: Man is disintegrating, like whatever the accident that like made
- 20:18Speaker 4: him plastic Man end. The result of that is that
- 20:21Speaker 4: you basically like just liquify and die, and so that
- 20:25Speaker 4: process starts for him and he's like, yo, I have
- 20:28Speaker 4: a son, Like I don't want this to happen to him.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I gotta like warn him. But he's a strange from.
- 20:34Speaker 4: His son, and it's like his ex wife because he
- 20:36Speaker 4: was like he was not a good person.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So the whole is it three four issues.
- 20:42Speaker 4: It's like his journey trying to like connect with his
- 20:45Speaker 4: son to you know, hopefully like one find a cure,
- 20:48Speaker 4: but also like have his son give him the time
- 20:50Speaker 4: of day so we can give him the cure. And
- 20:53Speaker 4: so it's like, you know, what kind of redemption can
- 20:55Speaker 4: he find through this process even though he's accepted that,
- 20:58Speaker 4: like he probably doesn't it.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So it was dope, No.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I'm definitely checking out immediately because cam Well had me
- 21:05Speaker 1: with this five issue series. I love a writer who
- 21:08Speaker 1: can just get me in that first issue and then
- 21:10Speaker 1: deliver such a solid story in five issues. I'm gonna
- 21:14Speaker 1: be thinking about Out of Alcatraz for a long time after,
- 21:18Speaker 1: you know. But it was only five issues and they
- 21:20Speaker 1: packed a lot into it, so I definitely got to
- 21:22Speaker 1: see this placid man now.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Dope, okay man. We left that on a little somber note.
- 21:29Speaker 4: So let's turn up the Shenanigans. Let's talk about Marvel
- 21:33Speaker 4: Knights the World to Come. Issue two came out this month. Now,
- 21:43Speaker 4: I don't know. The reactions were varied, yes, but there
- 21:49Speaker 4: was very much a collective gasp at the end of
- 21:51Speaker 4: issue one. For those who aren't familiar, there's a white
- 21:56Speaker 4: Black Panther. Now, you know, series takes place as a
- 22:01Speaker 4: sort of epilogue to the original Marvel Nights Black Panther run,
- 22:07Speaker 4: and so it is an alternate universe, which I don't
- 22:09Speaker 4: know how they're making that work there.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, the original Marvel Knights wasn't an alternate universe.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Well, like technically it was, and then they kind of
- 22:17Speaker 4: just folded everything in.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I never knew it was. I mean, I wasn't reading
- 22:21Speaker 1: Black Panther like on the Dot at the time, but
- 22:24Speaker 1: I was reading Marvel at the time, And yeah, I
- 22:26Speaker 1: didn't know that that whole thing was. But I knew
- 22:30Speaker 1: Max was like kind of alternate, But.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I don't know if it was again, I wouldn't then,
- 22:38Speaker 4: But like the way I understood it was, just Marvel
- 22:41Speaker 4: Knights was kind of more mature themed, a little bit like, yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 4: a little bit more daring in the storytelling. I don't
- 22:49Speaker 4: know that it was set up as an alternate universe,
- 22:50Speaker 4: like in the way that Ultimate was at the time.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Yeah, No, Ultimate, because that's what really got me back
- 22:55Speaker 1: in the comments was the Ultimate Universe, and Marvel, you
- 22:58Speaker 1: know at the time was Ultimate and New x Men
- 23:01Speaker 1: was really like I mean back in the Marvel I'll
- 23:04Speaker 1: reading those pretty exclusively. But I knew about Marvel Knights,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and I never considered it to be you know, I
- 23:10Speaker 1: just like, oh, that's Daredevil. That's a blade. I think
- 23:15Speaker 1: black panther cage. I think it was up in there
- 23:18Speaker 1: for a while. Yeah, so I knew that, and I'm
- 23:21Speaker 1: just like, all right, that's you know, those they want
- 23:23Speaker 1: to be adult, but they're not comics. You know, That's
- 23:25Speaker 1: how I looked at them, gotcha.
- 23:27Speaker 4: So yeah, So but according to Priest and Casada, this
- 23:31Speaker 4: is it's in its own universe, so like, whatever happens
- 23:34Speaker 4: there doesn't affect everything else, why not?
- 23:37Speaker 1: Right? Sure? So, I mean it it's affecting everything else,
- 23:42Speaker 1: no matter where it happened. Right.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Well, now you know they also just announced the Marvel
- 23:47Speaker 4: Knights punisher. Oh so it's we're gonna get like a
- 23:52Speaker 4: maybe now Marvel Knights is going to be his own
- 23:54Speaker 4: little universe and they're going to keep spinning out more.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Oh so wait, this is the fun This is where
- 23:59Speaker 1: that new punisher, like how to bring it back Frank
- 24:01Speaker 1: Castle again? This is where or did they bring him
- 24:04Speaker 1: back in the six month six already?
- 24:07Speaker 4: So there's no they they haven't brought them back in
- 24:08Speaker 4: the six one and sixty yet. Okay, but to my knowledge,
- 24:12Speaker 4: there are like two Frank Castle Punisher series in the
- 24:16Speaker 4: works because there's like a yeah, I'm sure I thought
- 24:18Speaker 4: X type deal coming well as this new Marvel Knights
- 24:23Speaker 4: punisher that's also coming.
- 24:25Speaker 3: So it's to be a Black Punisher in Marvel Knights.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Probably not, but uh yeah, so Marvel Knights, the World
- 24:34Speaker 4: to Come opens up like but they it's got this time.
- 24:39Speaker 4: It's this you know, it's the classic Priest thing where
- 24:42Speaker 4: you know, every few pages you're in a different year
- 24:45Speaker 4: and he's telling you different parts of the story kind
- 24:48Speaker 4: of all at the same time. And so what we
- 24:51Speaker 4: find out is that the main plot of the World
- 24:55Speaker 4: to Come is happening like forty years after the original
- 24:59Speaker 4: Black Pan the number one that Priest did, and so
- 25:03Speaker 4: an issue one all we really saw was the state
- 25:05Speaker 4: of the world is kind of crazy.
- 25:07Speaker 1: We don't really know.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Everything is like, you know, dystopian future.
- 25:11Speaker 4: And then we see T'Challa in tribal combat, and you know,
- 25:16Speaker 4: at the end of the challenge, it's like, oh, surprise,
- 25:19Speaker 4: this son I've been talking to. The whole issue is
- 25:21Speaker 4: white and so, you know, for the last month we've
- 25:25Speaker 4: been like, how this is child I have a white son?
- 25:28Speaker 2: You know?
- 25:28Speaker 4: Is it that white dude that Monica Lynne was with
- 25:31Speaker 4: when he proposed? Like what is going on? And we
- 25:34Speaker 4: get all those answers an issue too, so an issue too.
- 25:38Speaker 4: We find out that it was Everett Ross's kid the
- 25:43Speaker 4: whole time, Everett Ross had a kid with Nicki. Not
- 25:48Speaker 4: Nicki from the State Department, but Nikki from the State
- 25:50Speaker 4: Department's twin sister that we never knew existed. So he
- 25:58Speaker 4: has this kid, had this bastard child because he never
- 26:02Speaker 4: like claimed the kid. Somehow Wakanda found out about the
- 26:06Speaker 4: kid and like went and basically bought the kid from
- 26:08Speaker 4: his grandmother and to use as to Childa's hair because
- 26:14Speaker 4: to CHILDA needed an air. They got pregnant, but they miscarried.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Like I'm spoiling this whole issue, by the way, my bad.
- 26:22Speaker 1: But all good because I have so many questions. I've
- 26:25Speaker 1: read the issue as well, and I'm like, why didn't
- 26:27Speaker 1: they just pay for some black kid? Why ever it
- 26:31Speaker 1: Rosses did? Like what is the lineage here other than
- 26:34Speaker 1: it's Ever Ross?
- 26:35Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I don't I don't understand why. First of all,
- 26:39Speaker 4: they're in like, you know, the most technology advanced country period, like, yeah,
- 26:45Speaker 4: they couldn't have done in vitro, like there.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Was no test to babies nothing like.
- 26:53Speaker 1: So yeah, why ever, Ross, you couldn't get a better
- 26:57Speaker 1: white kid than that?
- 26:59Speaker 4: I guess because Priests, you know, invented every Ross and
- 27:03Speaker 4: was like, you know what, let's bring this back.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, because I've been searching my brain trying to
- 27:08Speaker 1: figure out whyever Ross other than you know that answer,
- 27:13Speaker 1: because it is it like ever Ross saved to Challa's life?
- 27:20Speaker 1: And then what's up with the whole deal with Mephisto?
- 27:23Speaker 4: Man, So the deal with Mephisto happened like way back.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Yeah that was in the original run, and I don't
- 27:32Speaker 4: know how that's legit. Like the first issue with Black
- 27:34Speaker 4: Panther is is Everett Ross recalling this time where Black
- 27:40Speaker 4: Panther Outsmart and Mefisto. But while you know he's encountering Mefisto,
- 27:46Speaker 4: he like tricked him into like selling his soul for
- 27:49Speaker 4: a new pair of pants, and like that's like a
- 27:52Speaker 4: recurring joke throughout the run, like he'll just wake up
- 27:55Speaker 4: with no pants or whatever.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Yes, they brought that back in.
- 27:58Speaker 4: Issue Too, Okay, but yeah, like it's it's interesting on
- 28:05Speaker 4: one hand. First of all, this book, the first issue
- 28:09Speaker 4: had me like because they, like I said, they tell
- 28:11Speaker 4: the story and all these different snapshots from different periods,
- 28:14Speaker 4: so we're like forty years in the future, sixteen years
- 28:17Speaker 4: in the future, eight years in the past, like all
- 28:20Speaker 4: this going on and like so and then they have
- 28:24Speaker 4: a timeline in the back of the book and that
- 28:26Speaker 4: part is even more interesting to me. And so the
- 28:30Speaker 4: first issue came out and I was like, yo, know,
- 28:32Speaker 4: I got to figure out what's going on. So I
- 28:33Speaker 4: like wrote out the timeline and kind of placed all
- 28:35Speaker 4: the events in order. Issue one we find out Child's
- 28:40Speaker 4: got his white son, like how we get his white son?
- 28:42Speaker 4: So Issue Too is basically the story of how the
- 28:47Speaker 4: white Son came to be. Yes, And like I said,
- 28:50Speaker 4: you know, we had this mysterious narrator and issue one,
- 28:54Speaker 4: this super old pale guy turns out that narrator was
- 28:58Speaker 4: Everett Ross the whole time, and.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yes I didn't I guess I got that. And then
- 29:04Speaker 1: I was like, okay, yeah, all right, yeah, okay, I
- 29:08Speaker 1: got it.
- 29:08Speaker 4: So when I interviewed priest for something else, but this
- 29:12Speaker 4: issue has come out, and the way he said it
- 29:16Speaker 4: was like it should have been obvious who the narrator
- 29:20Speaker 4: was because and like you know, once he said it,
- 29:22Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, I guess this makes sense. Like Ross
- 29:25Speaker 4: was the narrator in the first run, why would Ross
- 29:28Speaker 4: not narrate the coda to the run? But it didn't
- 29:33Speaker 4: come across that way to me either on first read.
- 29:36Speaker 4: But an issue too that it's made very clear, like yep,
- 29:40Speaker 4: this is this is back to You're basically right back
- 29:43Speaker 4: in the Marvel Knights world as it was before every
- 29:47Speaker 4: Ross with a snappy dialogue, all the jokes, you know'tually
- 29:51Speaker 4: insensitive and all that.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So it's Ross for whatever reason.
- 29:56Speaker 4: You know, Nicky died and he decided to just marry
- 29:59Speaker 4: or to and sister like that was a replacement of something, right,
- 30:05Speaker 4: Like that's weird.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But there's a lot of weirdness in this book.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Yeah, this world is like super chaotic. There's all kinds
- 30:15Speaker 4: of crazy stuff going on. The way Nikki's sister died,
- 30:18Speaker 4: what is the sister's name something with an end, Noel. Yeah,
- 30:23Speaker 4: so the way she dies, the Washington Monument like falls
- 30:27Speaker 4: on her car. Yeah, like it's like what but yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 4: so Washington Monument falls in the car that the maastard baby.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Wakanda adopts the baby and to Chila basically just raises
- 30:39Speaker 4: tobass his own. Now in this timeline, like or in
- 30:43Speaker 4: the back matter, there is this article like almost like
- 30:47Speaker 4: an Encyclopedia entry where somebody is this dude they call
- 30:51Speaker 4: it was William McGregor. So uh, but he's talking about
- 30:57Speaker 4: Wakandan culture and explaining it to the American reader, you know.
- 31:02Speaker 4: And he makes the point that people in America look
- 31:07Speaker 4: up to T'Challa as though he's some kind of hero yep,
- 31:10Speaker 4: because of his outfit, like because he looks like the
- 31:12Speaker 4: superheroes there too. But he's like, he's not a superhero.
- 31:16Speaker 4: That is like his ceremonial garb, and his only objective
- 31:21Speaker 4: is to do whatever's best for his country because he
- 31:24Speaker 4: is a monarch yep. And so that part was super
- 31:28Speaker 4: interesting to me because then it's like, okay, with that
- 31:32Speaker 4: as a backdrop, this is all to child is born
- 31:35Speaker 4: and bred to do. What is it about this this
- 31:39Speaker 4: white baby? Yeah, maybe the tactician in him is like,
- 31:44Speaker 4: I gotta go get that kid and bring him here.
- 31:47Speaker 1: It does not make sense, man, I'm sorry, like at
- 31:49Speaker 1: least so far, you know. Yeah, and being like from
- 31:54Speaker 1: what I understand because I haven't read all of a
- 31:57Speaker 1: Priest's original run the Elliott Ross of that universe, this
- 32:00Speaker 1: is a bit of a buffoon.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 32:02Speaker 1: So it's like you can't imagine, like these are good jeans,
- 32:05Speaker 1: you know, shout out to Sydney Sweeney where you're like,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna go get this white baby. I mean, you
- 32:10Speaker 1: could go get Sidney Sweeney's white baby for that matter,
- 32:12Speaker 1: you know. I mean, I'm sure the quality is about
- 32:15Speaker 1: to say, but you know, you can just got to
- 32:19Speaker 1: be a better white baby out there. I'm sorry if
- 32:21Speaker 1: you're gonna like be if you're gonna say, Okay, I'm
- 32:24Speaker 1: gonna have a white monarch of Wakanda out of nowhere
- 32:31Speaker 1: for no reason, like why what would the people think,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know, where did this white kid come from? It
- 32:37Speaker 1: would be my first question I follows of Wakanda, Yeah,
- 32:41Speaker 1: like how did this happen? And so that's the other
- 32:44Speaker 1: you have no white wife like this white I don't
- 32:50Speaker 1: even I doubt the average of Kanda has any clue
- 32:53Speaker 1: who Elliott Ross is true? True, like any clue, right,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but must be so weird the the when they bring
- 33:05Speaker 1: when they when he brings home the white baby, everyone
- 33:08Speaker 1: is like advising him against this, like I mean, why
- 33:11Speaker 1: why do you have this baby? What are you doing?
- 33:15Speaker 2: Sir?
- 33:18Speaker 1: And so I want to see the twist that Chila has.
- 33:22Speaker 1: You know, I don't see how, but I just want
- 33:24Speaker 1: to know that, you know somehow to be a twisted
- 33:27Speaker 1: is that it is made logical sense?
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 2: At this point, I'm I'm very much intrigued. Yeah, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 2: like I'm all all the way.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I can't wait for this book every bore.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, and like I guess and in that way,
- 33:46Speaker 4: it's it's brilliant, Like the other book has you feeling
- 33:50Speaker 4: like this right now?
- 33:51Speaker 1: There are other books different different reasons. This is like Power,
- 33:58Speaker 1: you know where I can't wait to watch new episode
- 34:00Speaker 1: of Power because I just know what they're gonna give me.
- 34:04Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:05Speaker 4: So priests characterization up to child has always been like
- 34:11Speaker 4: he's nineteen steps ahead of you, right, yeah, So with
- 34:15Speaker 4: that characterization in mind, I'm like, Okay, what in the
- 34:18Speaker 4: world is the end game that has this as one
- 34:23Speaker 4: of the moves on the chessboard?
- 34:25Speaker 2: Like and it's like that, I gotta see, I just.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Wanted to white work kinda you know what I mean.
- 34:30Speaker 1: But it's like that's not even achievable through this. It's
- 34:33Speaker 1: I keep going back to how the average condo of
- 34:35Speaker 1: must feel like one day, you Know'challa's they're getting old
- 34:40Speaker 1: and then suddenly this white kid shows up and beats
- 34:43Speaker 1: his ass on the waterfall and he's like, because you
- 34:48Speaker 1: had no idea that nobody knew about this white boy
- 34:50Speaker 1: before that moment, right right until he pulled his mask
- 34:53Speaker 1: off the like maybe like the elite knew, but that's
- 34:58Speaker 1: it right, everyone else thought.
- 35:00Speaker 3: I mean, they gave him a black.
- 35:01Speaker 4: Name, Like, yeah, well, I think Wakandon knew about the
- 35:08Speaker 4: son because they're saying he raised him as a son.
- 35:11Speaker 1: He's yeah, so you must have taken him out to
- 35:12Speaker 1: the parking and yeah, but what the okay again, then
- 35:17Speaker 1: with the multiple questions and the average Condon, the Wakandon
- 35:22Speaker 1: inquirer must have been going buck wild with this one, bro,
- 35:26Speaker 1: because you had two black wives and then suddenly you
- 35:30Speaker 1: have this pure white baby, pure white, pure blonde there,
- 35:34Speaker 1: straight blonde hair, blue eyed, white baby, right, Like, I.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Don't know, but you know what's got me?
- 35:41Speaker 1: Uh even looks amazing.
- 35:44Speaker 4: There's a cover they just put out the cover for
- 35:47Speaker 4: issue five in October, and it is you know, baby Ross,
- 35:55Speaker 4: you know, in full black panther guard minus the minus
- 35:58Speaker 4: the the mask, sitting back watching the news with a
- 36:01Speaker 4: cup of coffee, like just super pleased with himself.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Wait, Baby Ross, Oh, I mean I.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Mean Kama Katama.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Okay, Wow, all right, I'm I'm just glad you told
- 36:13Speaker 1: me about it so I can forget and see it
- 36:15Speaker 1: and you know, cry laughing when I see it.
- 36:17Speaker 4: Like so, And like I said, that's the other thing
- 36:21Speaker 4: that I think is fun about this. It's like I'm
- 36:24Speaker 4: reading this with the context of like all the other
- 36:27Speaker 4: Priests stuff that I've read before, right, And he plays
- 36:30Speaker 4: with race a lot, yes, you know, like Quantum and
- 36:34Speaker 4: Woody even that Black Black Adam series he just had.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Like there's always some like commentary that some twist and
- 36:45Speaker 4: Ross's character is enough. Like alone, it's like, yo, that's crazy,
- 36:48Speaker 4: Like why why is this man's a racist? And that's
- 36:54Speaker 4: the fun part of this issue too, Like you're reading
- 36:56Speaker 4: the narration, he's like, yeah, man, you know, Wakanda still
- 36:59Speaker 4: Wakanda fighting over whatever and people braining hair in the background.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I'm like, yo, that's crazy.
- 37:08Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 37:09Speaker 4: So I'm like, and Priests is very much online, he's
- 37:13Speaker 4: very much seeing the responses said thing right, he's plugged in.
- 37:18Speaker 4: So I'm like, this just feels like the whole audience
- 37:21Speaker 4: is like on a string being played and it's fun.
- 37:25Speaker 4: It seems fun.
- 37:26Speaker 1: It seems fun now right now. My only thing is this.
- 37:32Speaker 1: I'm praying not that this turns out to be like
- 37:35Speaker 1: Mark Millar woned, you know, where it's like the joke's
- 37:40Speaker 1: on you at the end, you know, ha haha. I
- 37:43Speaker 1: made all the money, I caused all the controversy, and
- 37:46Speaker 1: then you're left with a you know, white to.
- 37:49Speaker 6: Yallamm Well, it's set up so that that doesn't happen,
- 37:54Speaker 6: because when T'Challa dies an Issue one, it's like sixty
- 37:58Speaker 6: years in the future and he's still on the throne.
- 38:00Speaker 1: So let's but what is the whole world to come?
- 38:04Speaker 1: And why is it so chaotic? And yeah, the way
- 38:08Speaker 1: it seems, it seems like white that 'challa does a
- 38:10Speaker 1: lot of horrible stuff.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Does a lot of damage.
- 38:14Speaker 4: It's like putting Scar on the throne and age right
- 38:18Speaker 4: or Ja'afar the same same concept. Yeah, Pride rock Jafar
- 38:23Speaker 4: and Agraba, Like the economy is gonna tank, it's it's terrible.
- 38:28Speaker 4: It's gonna pass the big beautiful bill and then they're
- 38:30Speaker 4: gonna see like the of it. Right, And so the
- 38:34Speaker 4: story is apparently of what Ross's kid does while he's
- 38:40Speaker 4: on the throne, how it throws the whole world into chaos,
- 38:45Speaker 4: and then presumably how T'Challa gets the gets control of
- 38:49Speaker 4: the wheel back.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Now the question is like, is it too little, too late?
- 38:54Speaker 1: Yeah? Is he gonna right the wrongs?
- 38:57Speaker 4: Or is he just gonna die having ruined Watanda's legacy
- 39:02Speaker 4: all because he decided to, you know, invite the Fantastic
- 39:05Speaker 4: four over one day for a visit.
- 39:10Speaker 1: So I mean that, you know, that could be a
- 39:13Speaker 1: good message, you know, as they said right there, you know,
- 39:17Speaker 1: don't ever let him in. But I also don't know.
- 39:20Speaker 3: That's a that's a pretty you know.
- 39:23Speaker 1: It's harsh. Oh man. I know everyone out there has
- 39:27Speaker 1: heard about this book.
- 39:29Speaker 3: It is from our WA.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Studios, a w A studios. I guess, shout out to
- 39:37Speaker 1: who's over there from USA. Alonzo, my brother saw Alonzo.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Shout out to him. And they're doing a lot of
- 39:43Speaker 1: interesting work over there, and this book is one of them.
- 39:46Speaker 1: This book is flying off the shelves. Everyone's talking about it.
- 39:50Speaker 1: They Choose Violence Sheldon Allen. It's a story of four
- 39:55Speaker 1: black women who decide to choose violence. Literally, they basically
- 40:01Speaker 1: all get fed up. They've been fed up with things
- 40:04Speaker 1: their whole life. It starts off you see them in college,
- 40:07Speaker 1: and you know, they're just tired of everything that we
- 40:10Speaker 1: deal with as black people in America every day of
- 40:13Speaker 1: our existence, and what we've been dealing with, you know,
- 40:16Speaker 1: since the inception of America and probably what we did
- 40:20Speaker 1: them for a long time, and they're just tired of it.
- 40:22Speaker 1: So they say, well, why don't we just you know,
- 40:25Speaker 1: kill someone. When a police officer gets off for shooting
- 40:28Speaker 1: a young black boy, why don't we just kill that cop?
- 40:30Speaker 1: And that's what they think about in college. But then
- 40:32Speaker 1: they decide not to do it, and then years later,
- 40:35Speaker 1: once they're all established, one of them actually becomes a
- 40:37Speaker 1: police officer. Another one I think is an attorney. They
- 40:41Speaker 1: all have you know, successful careers going on, and they're like, well,
- 40:47Speaker 1: you know, maybe it's time now. Another incident happens and
- 40:49Speaker 1: they they're pushed over the edge basically, but they're not
- 40:52Speaker 1: going to just do it haphazardly. They all train, you know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: one as a police officers. So they go to the
- 40:58Speaker 1: shooting range, they start working out, they start planning, they
- 41:01Speaker 1: get their lists, they check it twice, et cetera, et cetera,
- 41:04Speaker 1: until they're ready to go, and then they choose violence.
- 41:08Speaker 1: And I mean they choose it. It is a super
- 41:12Speaker 1: like I talked about out of Alcatraz that has nothing
- 41:15Speaker 1: on the level of violence in this book. This is
- 41:17Speaker 1: not for kids, This is not for the squeamish. This
- 41:21Speaker 1: ain't even for me. Honestly. For a lot of it,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I was even like, yo, this book is just a
- 41:26Speaker 1: bid into the ultra violence, and especially in the second issue,
- 41:31Speaker 1: they really get into how graphic the violence save and
- 41:36Speaker 1: acted on these people, and the different methods of torture
- 41:39Speaker 1: and how they all have their favorite method. Let's just
- 41:43Speaker 1: say one of them involves a spike buildo that they've
- 41:47Speaker 1: named Lexington Steele.
- 41:52Speaker 2: That's a choice.
- 41:53Speaker 1: It's a choice, right, And that's how like the first
- 41:56Speaker 1: issue had me, right, I was all in on it.
- 41:58Speaker 3: I was like, okay, yes, you know, because that's a concept.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I did a short film back at Howard University called
- 42:04Speaker 1: The mad Face Killer, which was about this dude who
- 42:08Speaker 1: you know, puts on the mad face and starts going
- 42:10Speaker 1: around murdering politicians and lawyers and cops and everything in
- 42:14Speaker 1: that nature. So it's, you know, a dream that we've
- 42:17Speaker 1: all pretty much had at some point, right, you know,
- 42:20Speaker 1: probably or maybe just me, you know, I'm a little touched.
- 42:23Speaker 1: But I also just you know, the mad Face Killer
- 42:26Speaker 1: was just out shooting people. There was no need for
- 42:29Speaker 1: torture and this lexings and steel references and the twist.
- 42:36Speaker 1: I will spoil this because this has actually been spoiled
- 42:39Speaker 1: in all the press and everything. The twist at the
- 42:41Speaker 1: end of the second issue is that a copycat killer
- 42:45Speaker 1: starts going around killing black people in the same fashions
- 42:49Speaker 1: that they've been killing people. I was whelmed, honestly by
- 42:58Speaker 1: this twist. I was like, really, well, to the point
- 43:02Speaker 1: of almost underwhelmed, to the point of almost like disagreeing
- 43:05Speaker 1: with it, because black people in America have been getting
- 43:08Speaker 1: killed in horrific ways since its inception, since before it
- 43:12Speaker 1: was called America, you know, I mean, horrific does not
- 43:16Speaker 1: begin to describe it, and on a scale unbeknownst to
- 43:23Speaker 1: humanity before it's started here. So to the fact where
- 43:29Speaker 1: you know, Nazi Germany copied our methods to instill the Holocaust.
- 43:37Speaker 1: So the idea that you know, for black women killing
- 43:41Speaker 1: some people, would it might inspire a copycat killer.
- 43:44Speaker 3: True, But the idea that that's.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Like, oh no, we shouldn't be killing people because we
- 43:49Speaker 1: have a copycat killer is wild because it's not like
- 43:51Speaker 1: if you stop killing people, the cops are gonna stop
- 43:53Speaker 1: killing people. And to me, it doesn't matter how many
- 43:56Speaker 1: cops you kill, the cops are still going to kill
- 43:58Speaker 1: black people. You know that that's just the sad nature
- 44:01Speaker 1: of the system. So yeah, the second is you kind
- 44:05Speaker 1: of had me man where I was trying to like, ah,
- 44:07Speaker 1: I really would love to talk to Sheldon and the
- 44:10Speaker 1: other creators of this book, and I'm definitely gonna stick
- 44:13Speaker 1: it out to see where it goes. But I definitely was.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Kind of like, I don't know, man, I don't know.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's interesting, all right. I'm not one for
- 44:24Speaker 2: grotesque violence just for the same page all I'm probably
- 44:29Speaker 2: never reading this book straight up, but like the idea
- 44:36Speaker 2: of like people being fed up with the system and
- 44:39Speaker 2: going out, all right, we're going to take matters into
- 44:41Speaker 2: our own hands, and I can get I can get
- 44:43Speaker 2: with that with degree. I agree, right, like.
- 44:48Speaker 4: If just there being a copycat killer would not be
- 44:52Speaker 4: enough for me to stop that, if that were the mission.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 4: But yeah, so now I'm I don't know if I'm
- 45:01Speaker 4: curious enough to read it, but you have to tell
- 45:03Speaker 4: me how it is as it is.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I will because it's only five issues, so I'm
- 45:08Speaker 1: going to stick it out for the next story and
- 45:09Speaker 1: see what happens. But I have to say that being
- 45:12Speaker 1: you know, the big twist that you know is turning
- 45:14Speaker 1: to issue three. As we're getting into the second app,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I was kind of like, you know, because they'd already
- 45:22Speaker 1: you know, decided to give up at one point because
- 45:24Speaker 1: they were like, Yo, this ain't working, you know, et cetera.
- 45:26Speaker 1: And then they realized that they basically can't even be
- 45:30Speaker 1: which was. It was like, I had a lot of
- 45:33Speaker 1: questions about the second issue, because the crew decides to
- 45:36Speaker 1: stop murdering because you know, different reasons. You know, one,
- 45:40Speaker 1: they know they'll eventually get caught all this stuff. So
- 45:43Speaker 1: when they stop murdering, it's like they can't be friends again.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And the writer even has a line where, you know
- 45:49Speaker 1: this is coming from the narration of one of the women,
- 45:51Speaker 1: where he says, I'm gonna tell you a secret. Women
- 45:56Speaker 1: can't stand each other, like even as friends, like best friend,
- 45:59Speaker 1: women can't stand each other. M that really struck me weirdly,
- 46:06Speaker 1: Like that really was like, wow, that sounds like some
- 46:12Speaker 1: of that red pill stuff. Yeah, and like basically this
- 46:16Speaker 1: prove of women could not remain friends unless they were
- 46:19Speaker 1: out murdering people.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's wild.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Like yeah, and it's not said, you know that men
- 46:27Speaker 1: can't stand each other, which, you know, it made me
- 46:29Speaker 1: feel a little bit better. I mean, untrue, but I
- 46:32Speaker 1: mean I can't stay in a lot of my homies,
- 46:34Speaker 1: so I get that, you know, but like the fact
- 46:37Speaker 1: that you know, we still remain friends without going around
- 46:40Speaker 1: murdering people. And I would not think that most women
- 46:44Speaker 1: need murder to remain friends with other women, right, I
- 46:48Speaker 1: think women are naturally more communal than men. Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Yeah, my wife's and mom groups and all kinds of stuff.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Like I can go years when I was talking to
- 46:57Speaker 2: my best friend in the world, no, you know, right, shout.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Out to my brother Drew, Like, I mean, we talked
- 47:04Speaker 1: more than years, but it has been years of points
- 47:06Speaker 1: and you know, to be interestingly hel together. But yeah,
- 47:10Speaker 1: yeah that. Like I said, there was a lot of
- 47:13Speaker 1: stuff in the second issue where I was kind of like, wow,
- 47:15Speaker 1: I don't know what it's doing. I'm still intrigued. The
- 47:18Speaker 1: level of violence is a little rough for me. I'm
- 47:21Speaker 1: never a fan of torture at all in any circumstances.
- 47:25Speaker 1: So and that's when it's like just you know, cause
- 47:28Speaker 1: first I think, Okay, they're just murdering these chaps school,
- 47:29Speaker 1: you know whatever. But then when they introduce oh no,
- 47:31Speaker 1: we're torturing them in horrible ways, I was like, yo, bro,
- 47:35Speaker 1: they're trying to die at the end of it. It doesn't matter,
- 47:37Speaker 1: Like if you torture them and let them live, maybe,
- 47:40Speaker 1: but you killed them. It doesn't matter how much you
- 47:42Speaker 1: torture them. So you know, like that's for your pleasure
- 47:46Speaker 1: at that point, and That's that's really weird.
- 47:48Speaker 4: So, like, do these is there any communicated Well, like
- 47:51Speaker 4: I get the why they're killing people or torturing or whatever,
- 47:53Speaker 4: but are they communicating even notes or anything to say like, hey,
- 47:57Speaker 4: we'll stop killing when y'all stop killing black people.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I think there might have been, but it doesn't feel
- 48:03Speaker 1: like that because when they took a break, it wasn't like,
- 48:05Speaker 1: you know, they'd accomplished anything, because they went back to
- 48:08Speaker 1: murdering later on and nothing had changed. So yeah, no,
- 48:15Speaker 1: I don't think so I had to check. But like
- 48:19Speaker 1: I said, the amount of the description of the level
- 48:21Speaker 1: of torture, and in that line about women not being
- 48:25Speaker 1: friends and the fact that this crew couldn't hang out
- 48:27Speaker 1: until they murdered somebody else, like literally they get back together,
- 48:31Speaker 1: you know through it's four of them, like three of
- 48:34Speaker 1: them planning this murder for one of them's birthday. That's
- 48:40Speaker 1: that's the thing that's weird because a lot of choices, man,
- 48:44Speaker 1: Like I said, a lot of choices are being made
- 48:47Speaker 1: in this book. I was really intrigued by the premise
- 48:51Speaker 1: and in that second issue, you know, but I you know,
- 48:55Speaker 1: I know, we said this is our favorite books in
- 48:56Speaker 1: the month and I don't know, this was one of
- 48:59Speaker 1: my favorites, but it was one of the books for
- 49:01Speaker 1: the most. I was like, yo, now I really got
- 49:03Speaker 1: to see what happens. That's mom. So in a way,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you know, I guess this is my the.
- 49:07Speaker 3: World to come?
- 49:09Speaker 2: Bay Okay.
- 49:12Speaker 1: So yeah, just like the World to come, I didn't
- 49:18Speaker 1: agree with all the choices, but I'm still intrigued to
- 49:22Speaker 1: know to see where it goes. So and they didn't,
- 49:26Speaker 1: at least at least the plague of a White to
- 49:28Speaker 1: Challah on us.
- 49:32Speaker 2: That was great.
- 49:35Speaker 1: He never given that down, Bro, Never Ryan Cannon, Now
- 49:41Speaker 1: you're Cannon, Like yo, I was so young, Crew, I
- 49:46Speaker 1: was like, yo, bro, there's going to be a Marvel legend.
- 49:50Speaker 2: There's absolutely going to be a Marble oh quick.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And I'm buying and putting them right up in my
- 49:56Speaker 1: Wok conocession. I might have to put him on the throne.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Take off. I got the key on the throne right now.
- 50:07Speaker 1: But why Tolla come out of going up there?
- 50:13Speaker 2: Oh my god, please give us a white to child
- 50:15Speaker 2: of Marble.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Oh my god. You can started bugging then yet, But
- 50:19Speaker 1: I need to all right, what's your next book? Yeah?
- 50:25Speaker 4: So, speaking of torture and grots murders. So Beneath the
- 50:31Speaker 4: Trees where the Right of Spring issue number one came
- 50:35Speaker 4: out this month.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 50:39Speaker 4: This being the sequel to the Breakout series from Patrick Horvath,
- 50:43Speaker 4: who writes and draws this book Beneath the Trees where
- 50:46Speaker 4: nobody sees the original series.
- 50:47Speaker 2: What's about this this bear?
- 50:50Speaker 1: Uh? She looks like something off.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, something off, like the busy world of Richard Scary,
- 50:59Speaker 4: like something like that, Like this this is a bear
- 51:01Speaker 4: that you grew up watching on Nick Junior. Yes, But
- 51:05Speaker 4: and she lives in like this, you know, mister Rogers
- 51:07Speaker 4: type small town where it's like everybody knows everybody, Like
- 51:11Speaker 4: your local grocery store is like the farmer's market, you know.
- 51:15Speaker 4: You don't go to home depot, you go to the
- 51:16Speaker 4: local hardware store that's like owned by Harry and it's like, oh, hey,
- 51:20Speaker 4: what's up. And so anyway, she's she's living in this
- 51:23Speaker 4: small town. And what we find out in the first
- 51:26Speaker 4: series is that she lives in this small town that's
- 51:29Speaker 4: like all nondescript and everything. But she's a serial killer.
- 51:33Speaker 4: And so she told.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Every every so often. I don't know if it's every
- 51:38Speaker 2: weekend or what.
- 51:39Speaker 4: But it's like every so often she will just drive
- 51:42Speaker 4: to like the big city, right, So, you know, let's
- 51:47Speaker 4: say she's from upstate. She drives to the city, kills
- 51:50Speaker 4: somebody because it's like it's city life. Nobody will ever
- 51:52Speaker 4: notice they're missing or whatever. They'll never trace it back
- 51:55Speaker 4: to me, goes back and keeps living her small town life.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 52:00Speaker 4: So in the first series, what happens is there's a
- 52:03Speaker 4: murder in that small town and it's kind of like,
- 52:08Speaker 4: you know, in the same way that she might do it.
- 52:10Speaker 4: And she's like, if people come digging trying to find
- 52:13Speaker 4: whoever killed this person, they're going to find out that
- 52:16Speaker 4: I'm a killer too. And so she's got to solve
- 52:18Speaker 4: this murder before the police do. And so and she's.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Trying to everybody's animals, right, and everybody's animals.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Everybody's yeah, okay, And so it's like, what's the part
- 52:31Speaker 4: that was crazy about the series is like this juxtaposition
- 52:33Speaker 4: of the like, you know, it's all these cute these
- 52:36Speaker 4: cute animals or whatever, but there's all this like murder
- 52:40Speaker 4: going on, like and these people are dying and being
- 52:42Speaker 4: like put on display in the craziest ways. So it's
- 52:46Speaker 4: like that body horror, like all that stuff you don't like, right.
- 52:51Speaker 2: And and to be fair, I don't either, but the
- 52:53Speaker 2: fact that the animals I was cool with it.
- 52:55Speaker 1: I was cool, we are right here.
- 52:57Speaker 4: We are, so, you know, spoil alert, you know, big
- 53:01Speaker 4: cuddly Bear doesn't get caught in the first series. Nice,
- 53:05Speaker 4: and I'm just like, okay, cool, this is a nice
- 53:06Speaker 4: little you know, one shot series or whatever.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Cool.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Well, in the sequel, what.
- 53:12Speaker 4: We get is like the sister of one of her victims,
- 53:17Speaker 4: Like we find out that it's been like eight years
- 53:19Speaker 4: that have passed her brother went missing, and she's been
- 53:24Speaker 4: hounding the police hound in all the hospitals, like okay,
- 53:27Speaker 4: every time a corner report comes along, like let me
- 53:29Speaker 4: go see if this is my brother, trying to identify
- 53:31Speaker 4: the body. This takes place in like the early nineties,
- 53:36Speaker 4: so it's like or the mid nineties, so it's just
- 53:38Speaker 4: at the beginning of like the Internet and message boards
- 53:41Speaker 4: and stuff. And so now she's got like she's on
- 53:44Speaker 4: her computer no, and she's like you know that basically
- 53:47Speaker 4: this girl's full time job is trying to find out
- 53:50Speaker 4: what happened to her. For all she knows missing brother,
- 53:55Speaker 4: and so she gets a tip to go to this
- 53:58Speaker 4: small town of Woodbrook book because there might be some
- 54:01Speaker 4: clues as to where her missing brother ended up. And
- 54:06Speaker 4: so now that brings us back to the town with
- 54:09Speaker 4: the big cuddly bear that's been perpetrating all this And
- 54:13Speaker 4: to spoil the end of issue one, it turns out
- 54:17Speaker 4: the bear is who invited the serial killer invited the
- 54:21Speaker 4: victim's sister to the town.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Oh God, and you.
- 54:26Speaker 4: Know, we leave it right there. I don't know why
- 54:29Speaker 4: she invited her. I don't know if like the plan
- 54:33Speaker 4: was like, you know, let's let's kill the sister too.
- 54:35Speaker 4: She's asking too many questions. I don't know. But what
- 54:38Speaker 4: I enjoyed about it was like when I heard they
- 54:41Speaker 4: were doing a sequel, I was like, this book did
- 54:42Speaker 4: not need a sequel.
- 54:44Speaker 2: I don't need more of this.
- 54:47Speaker 4: But then, like when you read the first issue, it
- 54:50Speaker 4: just feels like it could have been like issue seven
- 54:52Speaker 4: of the first series, Like it was a logical jumping
- 54:55Speaker 4: out on point, like well, yeah, where, because the whole
- 54:59Speaker 4: the idea yea, was that because these the victims were
- 55:02Speaker 4: all from the big city, they're like these John does
- 55:04Speaker 4: nobody cares about him?
- 55:05Speaker 2: It'll never come back.
- 55:07Speaker 4: And it's like, well, no, all these victims, there's got
- 55:09Speaker 4: to be at least there's there's somebody's son at the
- 55:12Speaker 4: very least, somebody's child at the least, right, but they
- 55:14Speaker 4: might have other family loved ones in life. How would
- 55:17Speaker 4: that impact those people? And I thought that was an
- 55:20Speaker 4: interesting enough question to come back for this series. And
- 55:24Speaker 4: it's got me intrigued for a round two.
- 55:27Speaker 3: All right, just like you felt about their truth violence.
- 55:30Speaker 3: I probably will.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Never read this book. I read the first issue of
- 55:34Speaker 1: Beneath the Trees. I think my man Dmitri recommended to
- 55:38Speaker 1: me at Anyone Comics because he's an asshole. All right.
- 55:46Speaker 1: I enjoyed it, but again, it was very dark for
- 55:49Speaker 1: everyone out there. It's very dark as hell. But like
- 55:52Speaker 1: BJ said, the art is bright and colorful and cheery,
- 55:58Speaker 1: and it's like, dude, do doo. You know, I'm just
- 55:59Speaker 1: a little bear, and you know, here's my rabbit friend.
- 56:02Speaker 1: And it looks like you said something, but it looks
- 56:06Speaker 1: like there was this kind of like what's to do
- 56:10Speaker 1: with the fist?
- 56:11Speaker 2: Oh? Arthur?
- 56:12Speaker 1: Arthur?
- 56:12Speaker 2: Ye, it kind of looks like.
- 56:14Speaker 1: It looks like Arthur. And then Arthur's murdering everyone in
- 56:17Speaker 1: horrible ways.
- 56:18Speaker 4: Right, yes, Like just so, this is one of those
- 56:22Speaker 4: books that is deceptive, right, I have to hide it.
- 56:24Speaker 2: I have three kids, and it's one of those books.
- 56:29Speaker 2: They will absolutely open it if they just saw. Wow, No,
- 56:32Speaker 2: you cannot read this book. Wow, Like you know that.
- 56:36Speaker 4: I think we're far enough into this not to get demonetized.
- 56:39Speaker 4: But in that first issue that Ben's talking about, she
- 56:43Speaker 4: kills this dude, chainsaws his body into a bunch of bits,
- 56:48Speaker 4: puts all the parts in like individual paint cans, and
- 56:51Speaker 4: buries the paint cans in the forest like that there, Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 4: beneath the trees where nobody would see that.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Now the title makes sense. You did that. I didn't.
- 57:01Speaker 2: I didn't even connect that.
- 57:02Speaker 1: That's oh no, yeah, I caught it right away. I
- 57:07Speaker 1: can't believe.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:11Speaker 4: And so I think the art style, like for me,
- 57:15Speaker 4: somehow takes away from the grotesque nature.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Yes, definitely does.
- 57:18Speaker 4: It's pretty water colors and stuff like it almost makes
- 57:22Speaker 4: you want to like just like sit there and look like,
- 57:23Speaker 4: oh this is so pretty old.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Snap, that's an intestine like that. It's how you feel.
- 57:28Speaker 1: That's the same thing about Out of Alcatraz. So that's
- 57:31Speaker 1: what Out of Alcatraz immediately reminded me of Beneatha Trees.
- 57:33Speaker 1: It's different because it's humans, but it still has that
- 57:36Speaker 1: water colory, dreamy feel where it's like.
- 57:38Speaker 3: Oh, this is so beautiful. Oh my god, that's horrific.
- 57:41Speaker 1: You know, that's how it is because it's so beautiful,
- 57:43Speaker 1: and then horrific stuff happens and you're like, oh my god,
- 57:46Speaker 1: this is a very dark book.
- 57:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:49Speaker 1: So it's that same type of vibe, gotcha. Yeah, it's
- 57:53Speaker 1: just with humans. And nowhere I have to say, you know,
- 57:56Speaker 1: Beneath the Trees is definitely, at least off that first issue,
- 58:00Speaker 1: like on magnitude scales of more violent than Out of
- 58:05Speaker 1: Alcatras by madness.
- 58:11Speaker 4: For me, I think Beneath the Trees the original series
- 58:14Speaker 4: was more about the mystery than the murders, and so
- 58:17Speaker 4: that first issue you do spend a lot of time
- 58:19Speaker 4: like seeing her going through all the violence or whatever. Yes,
- 58:22Speaker 4: and in subsequent issues there is still the violence, but
- 58:25Speaker 4: you're mostly seeing like the result of it because like
- 58:29Speaker 4: putting the bodies on display, not seeing the act go
- 58:32Speaker 4: down because they don't want to reveal who it is
- 58:34Speaker 4: doing it.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:35Speaker 1: So no, but it's still even the other one we're
- 58:39Speaker 1: just about. They choose violence. I think it's more description
- 58:42Speaker 1: than even Beneath the Trees, deput beneath the treating, like no,
- 58:45Speaker 1: you know, here's this dude chop up like it's a
- 58:48Speaker 1: lot more description, and they choose violence than that. But yeah,
- 58:54Speaker 1: all right, oh, I'm still not going to cheer it up.
- 58:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna save my my goofiness for the end of
- 59:01Speaker 1: it all, and I'm going to talk about a book
- 59:04Speaker 1: that will probably be I don't want to do this
- 59:06Speaker 1: book every month, so I'm just trying to do it
- 59:08Speaker 1: right now and then we'll see how it goes, because
- 59:10Speaker 1: it probably could be in my top four and usually
- 59:13Speaker 1: is for me every month. And that's Power Fantasy. Depower
- 59:17Speaker 1: Fantasy by Kiaren Gillan and Casper Wing God. I think
- 59:21Speaker 1: that's how you pronounce the last name, I believe. So, yeah,
- 59:25Speaker 1: two of the greatest out right now. Kieren is a
- 59:30Speaker 1: friend of mine. Actually now, I've been a fan of
- 59:32Speaker 1: his forever and you know, we became friends over the years,
- 59:36Speaker 1: and so I'm a bit biased, but I also just
- 59:40Speaker 1: think the Power Fantasy is just an excellent, excellent read
- 59:43Speaker 1: every month. Karen knows how to tell a story, you know.
- 59:47Speaker 1: That's the one thing, like Karen really knows how to
- 59:51Speaker 1: give you cliffhanger after cliffhanger, how to give you enough
- 59:54Speaker 1: reveals and enough information where if you're paying attention, you'll
- 59:59Speaker 1: get it. But if you're not paying attention, or to
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: go right over your head and you'll be sitting there like, oh,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: why did I not see that? It was right there?
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Like he did it to me repeatedly on The Wicked
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: and Divine. There's so many times where I was so mad.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: And if you haven't ever read The Wicked of Divine,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: it's to me, probably in my top five comic books
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: of all time, top three, I don't know, maybe one,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: you know, I don't know. It's one of those books
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: for me. But the Power Fantasy, the series, let me
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: give a quick synopsis of it is about. It's a word.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: It's its own world. It doesn't take place in any
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: other universe that you know. And in this universe, it's
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: just like our own, except there are six or seven
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: at any time superpowered people. And when we talk about superpowered,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: they're called atomics in this universe, and the atomics are
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: each one of them is equal to the level of
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: a superpowered nation. Like there's Ettien, a black man telepath
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: who is Charles the Xavier on crack you know my
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: man is you know, Charles to the tenth power. Then
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: there's the Heavy, who is a gravity manipulator who can
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: literally and at one point threatens to throw Texas into orbit.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: And so it's a book about these five or six
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: or seven people who are constantly maintaining this cold war
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: status between them all because if they ever fought, it
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: would destroy so much of the world, right, so they
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: have to constantly maintain this thing. So it's a book
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: about superpower is without any real fights in it, and
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: there are massive displays of power at certain points, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: a lot of things have happened. It's an alternate universe
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: type book where where it's going back and forth. It's
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: jumping around from different times where it's going to end
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: pretty much in nineteen ninety nine, and it goes back
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: to nineteen forty five. I think it is when the
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: first time a bomb drops and when the in this
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: world which creates the first atomics.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: Gotcha, I did read this series. I'm trying to remember
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: how much of it I read. I think the first trade.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: I think I might read like first two or three issues.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: Oh man, I was intrigued by just the the whole
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: idea that is, like, all right, you better hope diplomacy works,
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: because ever go to war.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: That's it for everybody.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: No, it's like I said, I'm a fan of Karen
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: in general. If you like you know his other work
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Wicked and Divine, Young Avengers Die. I think this is
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: definitely up there with any of them. It's one of
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: my favorites from him. I've never read read Casper's art,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: but I became an instant fan of him. I got
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: him to do a step for me. I bought piece
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: of art from him. And it's just this book where
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: things are being revealed. I wouldn't even say slowly, because
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it's a lot happens, like in issue ten, we finally
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: will finally, but the real of Jackie Magus, who is
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: exactly behind the masch happens. And that's all I'll really say.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: But once again, this is one of those things where
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: I kind of noticed there was a similarity. I'm like, yo,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: what is going on there? Why do these characters look
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: like that? You know early on in the series, and
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: then it all comes together and this issue and like
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: you idiot, it was right there in front of your
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: face the whole time. Of course, that's why those two
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: characters look like that. But it's building to a head
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: in the next few issues. Karen has talked about different
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: I'm not sure how many how long this book will
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: go on. He says he has a format where it
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: could be sixteen issues, or it could be twenty four,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: or it could be up to like forty something, So
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I'm not sure which Timeline's working on right now where
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: it issue ten and themes are popping off. I'm like,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I'm really not trying to spoil too much of this
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: book because it's just one of those books that I
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: think that everyone should give a read if you're intrigued
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: at all by the concept, because it's one of those
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: was where things are happening every issue pretty much, where
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: those are major spoilers, especially as we're getting into this
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: second arc where there's a lot of revels happening issue
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: after issue. But man, it's been a beautiful ride so far.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Like I said, Casper's art alone, Man, it's just some
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: of the most beautiful and then horrific art you will
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: ever see, because, like I say, these dudes have enormous power,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and when things do happen, they happen. At one point
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: they had to confront this interdimensional being called the Queen,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: who was basically trying to bring Heaven on Earth and
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: was succeeding, and then for some reason it felt like
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: they weren't doing enough. It's not enough in the words
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: of Kendrick. And when they realized that, they went buck
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and that ended with the destruction of England and all
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: land masks pretty.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Much up to a part of Russia.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: So all of Europe and you know, a little bit
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: of Western A turned nothing.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Yeah, And so that's the level that they are on.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: You know, when this interdimensional being comes in and shows you, Okay,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: this was what happens if any two of us ever
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: go at it, we lose the continent.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: So this, like this series.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: Came out basically right on the heels of the Immortal X.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Men, like all that Fall of X stuff, yep.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: And you know when it was the reviews then were like, okay,
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: so if you like the Quiet Council stuff, this is
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: what Kieran would have done if like he could do
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: whatever he wanted with the X Men. How accurate is
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: that statement now that we've got like so many issues in.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: I honestly didn't feel it was even that accurate thing,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: and I think Karen would agree, because I thought Immortal
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: X Men and what was an infernal x Men when
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: they flipped it to the sins of Sinister stuff? Was
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Keran just really wilding out, you know, because they go
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: to its extremes that well, I didn't even enjoy it
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: all that much. I thought some of the you know,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: I love the Kacoa era, it is my favorite arab
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Edgmond since probably you know, original Claremont stuff and Morrison
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: of course, but you know some of that with the
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: dominion and everything, so like all right whatever, and like
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Charles and Xavier, you know, commanding galaxies, et cetera. It
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: just felt a little silly.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Honestly to me.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: It was just a little like, okay, you know, it
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: is that we're in a Sandbots type of situation and
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: let's all mash these characters together. Yeah, this is not
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: that at all. This is very methododical. I guess it
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: is maybe in the sense that if you had the
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Quiet Council and what Karen would do instead of doing
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: you know, let's all mash each other together. But I
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: didn't because it's so different from you know, what happened
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: in Sins and Sinister and some of his immortal edsmen run.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: I wouldn't compare them at all. Okay, Yeah, it is
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: a very It's a book that takes a lot of
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: time to really distress the ideals of what is ethical
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: versus what is moral, and things of that nature. And
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I actually confronted Karen on it when we interviewed him
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: about it, because I felt like a lot of the
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: characters were being ignoring the rules of what Ferris Buhler said,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: or they're spinning a lot of isms like Ferris Bueler.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: At the end of this film, I think when he's
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: given one of the speeches, I can't remember what point,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: but he's like, I don't believe in isms, you know, socialism,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: you know this ism, communism, basically saying all these systems
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: are just systems and you know, humans fuck up, system
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: placing f up. I'm trying to keep my curse into
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: a minimum on this.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: I'll believe that.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: But I challenged him because a lot of the characters,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: like at TNS, this black man who's a Teilpath and
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: I was like, does Etien believe that he's black? And
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: I was like, I don't think he does. You know,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: I think he's above all that because he's just such
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: an insane level of telepathy. And Karen said no, and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: we'll see that. I still have not seen that yet.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: I'm still not the biggest fan of et End in general,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: but I think that a lot of what Etien says
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: he is. Aten's always someone who says, I'm taking the
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: ethical way out of this. He's like, I'm not moral,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: I'm ethical, so I do the ethical thing, which in
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: a lot of cases is horrific. But like at one point,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: when Heavy is threatening to throw Texas into orbit, he
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: kills the at the end and said, kills the president,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: all the President's council, everybody involved in this plot to
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: kill Heavy, and he does it, you know, with his
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: telepathy and a whap, all of them die. And he's like, well,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: that's more ethical than you throwing Texas into orbit. But
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: it's still a horrific action.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: And he's making these crazy decisions.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Yes, and a lot of what he says and does
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: to me rings false. It reads of someone who's just
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: saying it to say, because he even makes one statement
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: that is really disturbing where he has said he affects himself,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: he uses powers on himself, so he doesn't really have
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: any guilt.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: M I'm like, that sounds like a white man no shots,
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: But so again, though, I'm quite intrigued. One spoiler in
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: this issue, two characters say they have three days to
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: kill at the end, and I, you know, jumped out
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: of my seat screaming like, yes, it's my two favorite characters.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: So I think he's gonna kill him both though, But
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: you know, we'll see what happens. The Power Fantasy All
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: to Sail Now, it's an incredible book.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: I really encourage everybody to.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: Check it out. Yeah.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: I have to get back on that. So my last book,
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: UH is another serious debut. It is the unchosen issue
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: from Image Comics. Okay, so this is written and drawn
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: by David Marquez, who is the artist on Unkenny X
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: Men right Now with Yiel Simon.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: Oh okay, okay, Kenny Unkenny is the one with UH.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: The they're in New Orleans with Rogue on.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: The team and the New Kids. Is that the New Kids? Yeah? Okay, okay, okay,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: I don't really know his art like that, but I
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: feel like I've seen him on something before that I
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: know the name.
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: Probably I want to say he was doing a lot
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: of covers and stuff too. Okay, you've seen his work
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: most likely. So that's what had me intrigued about this series.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: So the unchosen it's about this young lady named Aida,
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: and it's I think it's only a four issue mini series,
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: and to be fair, first issue doesn't really tell us
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: a whole lot that kind of just drops us in
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: this world. But Aida, uh, they basically is she's in
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: this world. She's going to like this magical school, Like
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: basically she's at Hogwarts, right, and she's doubting herself. She's
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: down on herself because she's not as naturally gifted in
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: like magic as you know, her peers, and so like
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: there's the Malfoy stand in who's like, you.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: Know, just cruel to her that the whole thing is
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: like she.
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: Should have the power to like you know, she's trying
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: to resurrect this bird.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: One of her friends.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: Comes across a dead bird, so she's trying to like
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: use magic to bring this bird back to life. But
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: she can't do it because she's not as gifted. So
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: the bully kid comes and like basically torments her with
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: the with the dead bird, like inmateing the bird's body,
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: and so to retaliate, she just punches the kid in
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: the face.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: And that's where like the world kind of opens up.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: What we learn is like she's at this school not
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: because you know, she's the most talented or gifted or whatever,
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: but like something happened and the sort of head masters
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: of this school kind of adopted her, just kind of
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: brought her in to this school type situation, and she
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: is basically on the run or they are shielding her
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: from these outside forces that are trying to like capture
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: her because it is believed by everyone, perhaps except her,
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: that she's like she's neo, she's the one, like she's
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: Harry Potter or whatever.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: Potter.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: Yeah, So it's like the whatever destiny is on her,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: they're trying to bring it out of her, and she's not.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: She's not seeing how it's gonna how it's gonna work.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: For me.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: I watched one and a half Harry Potter movies, right,
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: so you know, I know certain characters and that's kind
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: of what got me with this was just the way
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: they talk about magic, right, the ability to use magic
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: is known.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: It's like your mastery of the word, the words of magic.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: And so the book actually opens up like this sort
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: of title page and it just says in the beginning
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: was the word I mean, I'm always gonna I'm always
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: a sucker for like religious references, right, Like, Okay, So
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: because I'm listening to an interview and he's like, he's
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: not crazy religious. He grew up, like you know, in
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: a religious household, but he's not really practicing or anything
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: like that. So it's like, okay, like what what are
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: we going to do with this idea? If we're going
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: to pull in these religious themes and quote scriptures and stuff, like,
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: how does that?
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: How is that going to relate to this world?
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: So I'm curious of like what the world building is,
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: who these people are that are after Ada, how long
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: it's going to take for her to like master her
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: powers and then like save the day presumably against these
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: sinister forces. It was enough to be like intrigued for
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: issue too. I concern though, is that, like I said,
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: we didn't get a whole lot in anyone beyond what
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: I just told you. And so it's like, is there
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: enough time to even build this story in four issues
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: to you know, give it a real you know, rise
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: and fall. But I don't know is it is.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: Are you a black woman?
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: No, nobody black background background.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Character, but they're they're all white or.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody's white.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean David Marquees.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: You know, I was expecting you know, those spice up
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: in there.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Okay, I lied.
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: So the little boy that she's trying to help resurrect
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: this bird with is definitely a black kid.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Wait, I did read this book, Okay? I think am
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I just confusing that with Christopher Chaos now because Christopher
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Chaos erected Bird. I know, I feel like I did
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: read this book. When when did this drop? This's like
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, the beginning of the month.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: I want to say, yeah, maybe yeah, because it's been
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: yeah yeah, yeah, I think I think I did. I
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: ought to go look it up again, but I think
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I might have read that because I always, like I said,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: if I see a new number one with an interesting name,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I always try and give it read. And I think
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I saw the Untros because that's a name where I'm like, okay,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: I gotta chet that out.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's just a fire name.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, I think I'm got to reread
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: one and then go for number.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Two, because yeah, it was. It was interesting enough.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: The uh, all these characters we got on the first
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: on the cover to issue one, we don't really see
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: a whole lot from them, so I'm curious to see
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: how they all play in to it.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Okay, all right, all right, for my last book, I
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: will finally bring something a little bit more cheerful and uplifted. Well,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: I can't say this book is uplifting, but it's definitely
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: cheerful and hilarious. And I really did not expect to
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: enjoy nearly as much I expect.
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: It to not like it.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I went in with like whatever, and I loved it.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: God Zilla Destroys the Marvel Universe Issue one by Gary Duggan,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Who's done a lot of X Men stuff which I've
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: kind of liked and kind of didn't, and Javier Garon
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: is a penciler. It is exactly what the title says.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Godzilla shows up in the modern Marvel Universe and immediately
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: starts wrecking shop. I loved it. It's just it's it's
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: like one of those books that knows exactly what it is, right,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: like a celestial. I think it's a woken by Godzilla
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: or Godzilla is a woken by the celestial. So Godzilla
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: attached the celestial and the Narration is sitting there talking
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: about how the celestial is designed to exists in the
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: heart of the Sun and the coldness of you know,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: interstellar space, but not Godzilla, and then Godzilla tears the
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Celestial's head off. But it's that type of book. At
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: one point, more Man gets punched in the face because
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: all the hero are trying to be mad quiet and
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: let Godzilla just walk away because they can't do anything
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: about them, and oh Man like shoots him in the back,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: you know, and enrages him again, and so Red just
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: punches mo Man face like idiot. It's just, you know,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: it's that type of silliness in this book. I'm not
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: sure if any of the heroes actually do get murdered
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: in the first issue, other than the Celestial getting his
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: head torn off, but Godzilla is wrecking shop throughout the
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Marvel universe. I think I enjoyed this because I picked
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: up the first issue of that Avengerance versus the Alien,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: which is just I don't know, just like it didn't
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: do it for me. I never went bad for issue too.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: I just like, come on to see avengerance. They should
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: rub out like a planet of aliens. If they feel
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: like it doesn't brud they got acid blood. I'm totally stark,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: you know, like I literally have no I'm for a god. No,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: it's not you know, we're not the same. So yeah,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I didn't really enjoy that. I know they had a
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: spider man versus a Predator. I think that I absolutely
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: am intrigued because I love all the predator crossovers, Like
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Predator versus Archie is one of my favorite books ever.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: He spoiler, he murders them all. It was amazing.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: Did you read the Predator versus Black Panther?
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: Oh no, I'm not to go back for that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: That one.
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: That one was good too, Like I didn't even finish it.
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: But what I enjoyed was just the Predator had a
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: legit reason to be fighting Black Panther. That happened, But
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: that was that was dope, okay. But Godzilla destroys the
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: Marvel Universes. First of all, I thought this was because
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: you know they've been doing this Godzilla versus Marvel character
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: here and so when I saw I saw the solicit
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: for a collected edition of this, first I thought that
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: was those stories being collected. I am, okay, it was
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: a separate series. Yes, but I picked up issue one
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: as well. Yeah, and uh no, it it's just like
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: you said. I mean, it's just it's not taking itself
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: too seriously. This is very much like what would happen
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: if Godzilla just came to Manhattan and decided to set
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: up shop, like.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: And it does.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: It does spend a fair amount of time just telling
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: you how much like Godzilla is inevitable and no one
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: stands a.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: Chance of the celestials head like yeah, and no problem.
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: So the so the rest of the issue is basically
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: just like you know, every hero you can think of
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: coming in giving you like two or three lines of
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: dialogue basically say this. So there's nothing I could do
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: with this, you know, but for.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Men of them trying to be quiet.
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: That that was fun for me just seeing all the
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: different Marvel characters and like, you know, you didn't have
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: to spend a lot of time doing characterization. But I
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: feel like he got the voices in the question.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Because read punching more man like you idiot, was just
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: like that read Like someone asked me today on Threads.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: They were like, if you know, because if we were
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: talking about on fall nerd sure, honor, if you a
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: fantastic four that it was very nice to see a
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: more intelligent Johnny Storm than his normally portrayed. And someone
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: was like, well, you know, Sue is smart and Johnny smarter.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: Thing is smart. What's the difference. What's reed? Got? I
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: was like, but he got being an able. He's got
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: that down, pat bro, That's all. None of the other
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: fantastic war could they claim to that one, like you know,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: being a complete monster read got it? You know what
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: I mean? You got that?
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: So yeah, no, I felt like this got it down.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: Nah, I'm sitting here coming through the issue again, cracking up.
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: It's it's this is the type of book you need, right, Like, yes,
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: I'm I'm going through. I got to cut stuff from
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: my poll list. Like if I don't make cuts, I'm
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: spending like ninety dollars a week.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Oh god.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: So it's like, all right, we got to cut some
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: stuff off. It's probably not going to make not going
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: to survive the round of cuts. Yeah, but this is
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: one of those books that's like, man, you got that
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: a heavy poll list you got, especially you start pulling
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: all those indie titles and some of them just like
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: super serious and existential dread and all that this is
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: a palate cleanser.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, because like I said, I did, I
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: went in with a hateful face, and I think as
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I think I saw in a preview, you know that
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: he tore his head off, and that made me like, nah,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I got to see, you know, because I've read that
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: line of dialogue where it's like, you know, you can
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: survive all of this but not God. So I was
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: all right, this one gets it.
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: That was a bit with like you know that first
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: page that all starts Superman.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: You know, just yeah, being like brilliant, which this is
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: not going to come through a camera, but like everybody's face.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Right, it just they got nothing from working, Like oh
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: my god, I just said I to be quiet and
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: try and let him leave. I can't get over that amazing.
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: He just just hope he goes away, my god.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: So yeah, like like B like BJ said, man, if
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: you you know, if you got too many of them
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: darkness books on your pull list, you know, if you're
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: Like That's how I felt when.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I looked at him. I say, you know, I'm reading
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: all these you know they choose violence out of Alcatraz,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: you know, even the Power Fantasy is you know, very
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: much morality, you know, ethics, you know, and all this stuff.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: I was like, I just need to see this, and
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: it was just what I needed, Like I need a
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: book like this every month.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: Honestly.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: It doesn't have to be to the Other Streights the
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: Ball University, but every month I need to be reading
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: something like this that is just utterly ridiculous and honestly
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: gets what comic books should be, you know, cause that's
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: to me, Like you can do all that other stuff,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: but sometimes you got to get back to you know, ridiculousness.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you just gotta read something fun.
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: Yes, ah, you know, before we get out of here.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Speaking of reading something fun, Jimmy Hendris Purple Hayes co
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: written by me and my brother Mellow Brown Eisner, nominated
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: for its colors by the one Justin Prokowitch, with of

- 1:24:35Speaker 3: So I'm down there soon.
