- 0:10Speaker 1: Everybody. He's ready to drum.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Derek Gunn, this is Birds Weekly and his time to
- 0:14Speaker 2: look at the upcoming matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 0:18Speaker 2: and Ray. When you look at this matchup, the Eagles
- 0:20Speaker 2: have gone down to Tampa and lost three of the
- 0:22Speaker 2: last four down there. Obviously the heat humidity had something
- 0:25Speaker 2: to do with it. But let's start with the biggest
- 0:28Speaker 2: problems in terms of the Eagles dealing with the Buccaneers,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Todd Bowles and that Tampa to defense. Why is it
- 0:34Speaker 2: that particular defense gives Jalen Hurt so many problems.
- 0:40Speaker 3: It's it's not an accident, you know. I mean, it's
- 0:43Speaker 3: not like it's a coincidence. There's it's happened often enough
- 0:47Speaker 3: that there's a there's a connection there. And you know,
- 0:52Speaker 3: Todd is and always has been the same kind of coach,
- 0:56Speaker 3: same kind of play caller, whether he's a defensive coordinator
- 1:00Speaker 3: or the head coach. I mean, he runs his defense
- 1:02Speaker 3: the same way. They play a too deep coverage, but
- 1:07Speaker 3: they mix in a tremendous number of blitzes. They blitz
- 1:09Speaker 3: a lot, uh, and he does he does a very
- 1:13Speaker 3: good job of disguising them. I mean, he shows he
- 1:16Speaker 3: shows you one thing makes you think the pressure is
- 1:18Speaker 3: coming from here, but it's actually coming from there. Uh.
- 1:21Speaker 3: And he builds his defenses that way. He calls very aggressively.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:26Speaker 3: And he's very good at taking away the things that
- 1:29Speaker 3: you want to do. So I think in this game,
- 1:33Speaker 3: I'm going to be real curious see how Todd approaches it.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I'm assuming that he's going to want to come out
- 1:39Speaker 3: and do what the other defensive coordinators have done, which
- 1:42Speaker 3: is take Barkley out of the game. Let's you know,
- 1:44Speaker 3: let's shut down the running game. Okay, Well, if.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You're going to do that, then.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Are you how much are you going to get after
- 1:53Speaker 3: the quarterback? You know, it's going to be a little
- 1:56Speaker 3: bit of a push pull kind of thing between Bulls
- 2:01Speaker 3: and Hurts and his own coaching staff of how they're
- 2:04Speaker 3: going to approach this. But it's a very clear pattern
- 2:07Speaker 3: here that that Hurts has not played well against Bulls
- 2:11Speaker 3: coach defenses. And that's something that the Eagles look, they
- 2:14Speaker 3: have whole they have this whole week to study the film,
- 2:18Speaker 3: study the tape. They've played the Bucks often enough that
- 2:21Speaker 3: there's enough tape to look at and come up with
- 2:24Speaker 3: a better plan. Than what they've had before. But I
- 2:26Speaker 3: mean what you said at the start is true. I
- 2:28Speaker 3: mean the Eagles have gone down to Tampa Bay twice
- 2:32Speaker 3: now the last couple of years and he got blown out.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I mean the game, the game last year in Week
- 2:39Speaker 3: four game, they went down there and they got blown out.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And then when they went down there the year before that,
- 2:44Speaker 3: the playoff game, they got blown out again. And so
- 2:48Speaker 3: they're very aware of what they're walking into. Yeah, they're
- 2:51Speaker 3: three and oh which is good, but the Buccaneers are
- 2:54Speaker 3: three and oh two. And I just saw a stat
- 2:57Speaker 3: this week that the Buccaneers getting to three have done
- 3:01Speaker 3: something that no NFL team in history has done, and
- 3:04Speaker 3: that is they have won all three of their first
- 3:08Speaker 3: three games. They got to three and zero, winning three
- 3:10Speaker 3: straight games in the final minute. Yes, So that tells
- 3:14Speaker 3: you that no matter how this game starts, the Buccaneers
- 3:18Speaker 3: are gonna they're going to approach it with the idea
- 3:20Speaker 3: that we're going to be in this to the end.
- 3:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So teams like that that have that kind of belief
- 3:26Speaker 3: they're hard to put away. So the Eagles better, I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 3: I know they've had a tough stretch. The Dallas game
- 3:31Speaker 3: was not easy. Ye in the city was not easy,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and the Rams game certainly wasn't easy. But they're gonna
- 3:36Speaker 3: have to suck it up and get another big effort
- 3:38Speaker 3: because the Buccaneers are going to be a challenge on
- 3:40Speaker 3: Sunday Ray.
- 3:41Speaker 2: How much of a character building mode is that in
- 3:43Speaker 2: terms of when you can come back like that in
- 3:45Speaker 2: consecutive weeks. We've seen how it works for the Eagles,
- 3:48Speaker 2: But for a team like Tampa Bay that overall doesn't
- 3:50Speaker 2: have the same quality of talent that the Eagles do.
- 3:53Speaker 2: They're very talented team, but man for man and a
- 3:55Speaker 2: roster not as talented as the Eagles, what does that
- 3:58Speaker 2: do for their confidence? Because you know, I think when
- 4:02Speaker 2: we talked about playoff teams in the NFC, Tampa Bay
- 4:07Speaker 2: was like near the bottom of the teams you might
- 4:09Speaker 2: have considered. Now, the way they're playing, fighting tooth and nail,
- 4:12Speaker 2: the way they're finding ways to win games, you have
- 4:14Speaker 2: to put them right in the mix.
- 4:16Speaker 1: As a serious continued at this point.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you do. I mean, when you and
- 4:21Speaker 3: I were sort of handicapping the races before the season started,
- 4:27Speaker 3: I mean, I think we both were talking about the
- 4:29Speaker 3: NFC South was a weak division exactly, and our feeling was, yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean the Buccaneers, I mean, they'll probably win that
- 4:37Speaker 3: division because there's just no other really good teams there.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But you look at them now, and assuming it plays
- 4:44Speaker 3: out that way, assuming that they are in the playoffs,
- 4:46Speaker 3: which I believe they will be, no the way they're playing,
- 4:52Speaker 3: I think they're dangerous, you know, because they have that
- 4:54Speaker 3: if they keep winning games like this. I mean you can,
- 4:57Speaker 3: people can call them lucky or whatever, but look looking
- 5:00Speaker 3: at it from their side, it just gives them tremendous
- 5:02Speaker 3: confidence and a lot of it, a lot of it
- 5:05Speaker 3: really comes from a quarterback. I mean, you know Baker Mayfield,
- 5:08Speaker 3: if you followed him all the way back to college
- 5:11Speaker 3: where he won the Heisman Trophy, He's always been that
- 5:14Speaker 3: kind of quarterback. He's always been this really resourceful, gutty,
- 5:18Speaker 3: never out of a game, scrappy kind of guy, and
- 5:22Speaker 3: just natural leader type that. I mean, he's bounced around
- 5:26Speaker 3: a lot and people are saying that always not that good.
- 5:30Speaker 3: He's another one of those Heisman Trophy busts and so forth,
- 5:33Speaker 3: But it's really another one of those cases of a
- 5:35Speaker 3: guy that just needed to find the right situation yes,
- 5:39Speaker 3: and he found it in Tampa. He got down there
- 5:41Speaker 3: with the team that needed that kind of leadership, He
- 5:44Speaker 3: got down there with the team that had a couple
- 5:45Speaker 3: of really good receivers, and it all just fell into
- 5:49Speaker 3: place for him. And right now, they believe in this
- 5:52Speaker 3: guy and they think they can win with him every
- 5:55Speaker 3: time they line up, and I'm sure that's the attitude
- 5:57Speaker 3: they're going to bring into this game one Sunday.
- 5:59Speaker 4: You know that one guy in the group chat who
- 6:02Speaker 4: hit a five leg parlay week one and he wouldn't
- 6:05Speaker 4: shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, Yeah, it could be him,
- 6:10Speaker 4: It could be you, and we would all want to
- 6:14Speaker 4: be you. My Bookie makes it stupid easy to get

- 8:14Speaker 4: risk free first stake.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I will go so far as to say, at this
- 8:19Speaker 2: stage of his career, Baker Mayfield, through three games, still
- 8:24Speaker 2: a three game sample, is playing probably the best football
- 8:27Speaker 2: of his career.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I'm not basing it on stats.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You know, sometimes we in general get caught up too
- 8:32Speaker 2: much on statistics. But you you just worded it so
- 8:36Speaker 2: eloquently in terms of moving the team, using his feet
- 8:40Speaker 2: to pick up key first downs, making the key throws.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I mean, he's only completing like sixty one percent of
- 8:46Speaker 2: his passes, sixty two percent of his passes, but he's
- 8:49Speaker 2: made the necessary throws, the big throws when he had to.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I was watching one of the games when it was
- 8:54Speaker 2: a fourth down situation, he took off and picked up
- 8:56Speaker 2: like fifteen twenty yards with his legs in the drive,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and they moved in and scored a testdown off of
- 9:02Speaker 2: that particular drive. I think Baker right now, at this
- 9:05Speaker 2: stage of his career, is playing his best football, and
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think is significantly because of what you just said.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He finally found a system, a scheme that caters to
- 9:15Speaker 2: his strengths more so than his weaknesses.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and they he has a lot of autonomy. I mean,
- 9:22Speaker 3: if you watch them games, are they sending plays in
- 9:26Speaker 3: to him? Yeah, but you just get the feeling that
- 9:28Speaker 3: he's calling the shots out there. I mean, he's all
- 9:30Speaker 3: He's always been that kind of quarterback, which I think
- 9:34Speaker 3: accounts for what happened to him in a couple of
- 9:36Speaker 3: other places that that that other teams wanted a quarterback
- 9:40Speaker 3: they had a little more control over. Baker kind of
- 9:42Speaker 3: wanted to do his own thing, and that works in
- 9:45Speaker 3: some places, not in others. And but I think he's
- 9:49Speaker 3: got a team around him in Tampa Bay and a
- 9:52Speaker 3: coaching staff that is giving him that kind of authority,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and he thrives at it. And you're right, I mean
- 9:59Speaker 3: he's not you know, he doesn't run like a Jalen Hurts.
- 10:02Speaker 3: You know, he doesn't run like a Lamar Jackson. I mean,
- 10:04Speaker 3: he's not that kind of guy. But if you but
- 10:08Speaker 3: he'll hurt you, you know if he if if he's
- 10:11Speaker 3: if you leave a gap open on a third down
- 10:14Speaker 3: and six, he'll run you for nine and ten and
- 10:17Speaker 3: move the sticks. I mean, whatever it takes. In this sense,
- 10:21Speaker 3: he's a little little bit like Hurts, maybe a lot
- 10:22Speaker 3: like hurts and whatever it takes from week to week
- 10:25Speaker 3: to win the game, that's what he's going to do.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And you know it's I always liked him in college,
- 10:33Speaker 3: I really did. I thought he was fun to watch
- 10:37Speaker 3: because he was a guy that had he just had
- 10:41Speaker 3: a lot of moxy, you know. And uh, and it's
- 10:44Speaker 3: it's showing now. And he throws the ball. He's not
- 10:49Speaker 3: afraid that he's not afraid to stick in the in
- 10:51Speaker 3: the tight windows. And they have they've had some injuries
- 10:54Speaker 3: on the offensive line. So Baker is Baker. I mean,
- 10:57Speaker 3: you know what you're going to get out of him.
- 10:58Speaker 3: But he needs to protect and he needs his best receivers.
- 11:01Speaker 3: And maybe the Eagles get a little lucky this week
- 11:04Speaker 3: and maybe the maybe the Bucks will show up a
- 11:06Speaker 3: little shorthanded. Uh.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I just read a report that said Chris Godwin couldn't
- 11:11Speaker 2: make his season debut Sunday against the Eagles, and of course,
- 11:15Speaker 2: obviously Mike Evans suffered a hamstring injury uh in their
- 11:19Speaker 2: their win over the Jets.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I hope, I hope god was not playing.
- 11:25Speaker 2: But if one of those guys are playing, you know
- 11:28Speaker 2: that that's gonna give this Eagle secondary another test. The
- 11:30Speaker 2: Eagle secondary that's still growing into what I'm sure Big
- 11:34Speaker 2: Fangil wants it to be. You know, add some problems
- 11:37Speaker 2: again against the Rams, but it's a it's a it's
- 11:41Speaker 2: a secondary that's still find against Knits, trying to find
- 11:44Speaker 2: his identity and its continuity early on in this season.
- 11:49Speaker 3: It is it is, And if if they had their
- 11:53Speaker 3: full compliment of receivers, I'd be a little concerned about
- 11:56Speaker 3: that because there's no matchup in there that to me
- 12:00Speaker 3: is a good one for the Eagles at that second corner,
- 12:03Speaker 3: you know, I mean either Godwin or Evans on a
- 12:05Speaker 3: Dori Jackson with scare of.
- 12:07Speaker 1: The daylights out of me.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I mean Evans, you know, because he's played in Tampa
- 12:13Speaker 3: and because they are not you would consider a truly
- 12:16Speaker 3: high visibility team. I don't know if people really fully
- 12:22Speaker 3: appreciate the kind of career that guy has had, I mean,
- 12:25Speaker 3: cranking out thousand yard season one after another after another
- 12:29Speaker 3: after another. I mean he is I mean, there's no
- 12:31Speaker 3: question he's the first ballot Hall of Fame guy. There's
- 12:35Speaker 3: no doubt about that. And that's kind of player he is.
- 12:40Speaker 3: And if you're the Eagles with some of the issues
- 12:42Speaker 3: you've had in your secondary that would be a real concern.
- 12:46Speaker 3: From what I'm hearing. I'm kind of hearing what you
- 12:48Speaker 3: are that Godwin is trending towards playing. I think you'll
- 12:51Speaker 3: see Godwin on Sunday.
- 12:53Speaker 2: You know, Tampa Bay is not known for being this
- 12:55Speaker 2: prolific running team, but they're averaging four point three yards
- 12:59Speaker 2: to carry, right, you expect them to try to tack
- 13:01Speaker 2: the interior the way the Rams did.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I think they will.
- 13:05Speaker 3: You know, I would expect them to because a lot
- 13:09Speaker 3: of the stuff that mayfield seems to work best. He's
- 13:13Speaker 3: very good at the play action stuff, you know, and
- 13:15Speaker 3: come out and they'll run the ball, have some success
- 13:17Speaker 3: running the ball, and they will start running play action
- 13:19Speaker 3: and hitting you with big plays down the fields. That's
- 13:22Speaker 3: when he's at his best and also on the move.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And yeah, I.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Would expect them to come out and run the ball early,
- 13:31Speaker 3: especially when they look at the film of what the
- 13:33Speaker 3: success that the Rams had in that. I mean, the
- 13:35Speaker 3: Rams ran the ball pretty well against the Eagles, so
- 13:38Speaker 3: I think the Buccaneers will try and do that too.
- 13:41Speaker 3: You know the Eagles. I mean, you mentioned it earlier
- 13:45Speaker 3: that the Eagles have had no luck in Tampa Bay
- 13:48Speaker 3: at all. I mean the I think of the last
- 13:52Speaker 3: seven meetings that teams have had, the Eagles, Egles were
- 13:55Speaker 3: one and six the last seven times that played this team,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and a couple of a couple of the beatings were
- 14:01Speaker 3: pretty one sided in Tampa Bay's favor down there. That's
- 14:06Speaker 3: just it's just never an easy place to go play,
- 14:09Speaker 3: especially early in the season when when it's brutally hot
- 14:13Speaker 3: and humid. And now with that team at three and oh,
- 14:18Speaker 3: you've got an energized fan base down there. I mean
- 14:20Speaker 3: those buccaneer fans who who kind of come and go,
- 14:24Speaker 3: you know, like a lot of the Florida NFL fans.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It's one of the things I noticed traveling around. You know, Florida,
- 14:29Speaker 3: Florida is all about high school and college football. Absolutely,
- 14:33Speaker 3: high school football is huge in Florida, and we all
- 14:36Speaker 3: know that college football is huge in Florida. And honestly,
- 14:39Speaker 3: in the state of Florida, NFL football is in third
- 14:42Speaker 3: place in terms of now the people turn out. If
- 14:45Speaker 3: the team's winning, you know, they'll get on the bandwagon.
- 14:48Speaker 3: But if they're just so so or less, not much.
- 14:52Speaker 3: But right now people kind of are on the band
- 14:55Speaker 3: on the Bucks bandwagon with a three and oh start.
- 14:57Speaker 3: They're going to turn out and they're gonna turn out
- 15:00Speaker 3: number Now. I know the Eagles fans will be there too,
- 15:02Speaker 3: because it's a nice trip for Eagles fans, and they'll
- 15:04Speaker 3: be down there and you'll hear some Eagles support. But
- 15:06Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay fans are pretty excited about their chances
- 15:09Speaker 3: this year as well.
- 15:10Speaker 2: You know, you tested on the weather moments ago, and
- 15:13Speaker 2: of course at this time of the year, it is
- 15:15Speaker 2: still hot, it is still humid down in Florida, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: weather sometimes can be a significant part of the psychological
- 15:23Speaker 2: warfare when you're talking about playing a game like this.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Our colleague and friend John Clark reported that the Eagles
- 15:30Speaker 2: plan on going down to Tampa on Friday instead of Saturday,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and possibly having a practice session on Saturday. Good thing
- 15:39Speaker 2: to do that to try to get these guys better
- 15:41Speaker 2: acclimated and get that thick air in their lungs a

- 18:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I think so.
- 18:20Speaker 3: I mean, I the Eagles are pretty smart about this stuff.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I mean, they take this sports science kind of thing
- 18:27Speaker 3: pretty seriously, and I'm sure they've studied it and if
- 18:32Speaker 3: they feel there's some merrit to it, yeah, I'm sure. Listen,
- 18:35Speaker 3: I'm sure all week they're gonna be hydrating.
- 18:38Speaker 1: All week.
- 18:39Speaker 3: They're gonna be hydrating, getting fluids in these guys before
- 18:42Speaker 3: they get down there. But yeah, I mean, for an
- 18:46Speaker 3: extra day to kind of just get acclimated down there,
- 18:48Speaker 3: it's probably not a bad thing. And I think it's
- 18:51Speaker 3: gonna be another tough one, you know, I think, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be another one of these end
- 18:56Speaker 3: of the fourth quarter you're on the edge of your
- 18:58Speaker 3: seat because I think that the Bucks. I think the
- 19:01Speaker 3: Bucks are good. And moreover, they think they're good, you know.
- 19:08Speaker 3: And so they're looking at the Super Bowl champs coming
- 19:11Speaker 3: in there, and their attitude is, you know, yeah, you're
- 19:13Speaker 3: three and zero, Well so are we, you know, And
- 19:16Speaker 3: that's why I think it's going to be. I think
- 19:18Speaker 3: it's going to be a real another real tough one
- 19:20Speaker 3: for the Eagles. But you know, three straight weeks. They've
- 19:23Speaker 3: always found a way to win. Yes, let's see if
- 19:25Speaker 3: they can do it again.
- 19:27Speaker 1: All right, Ray, the moment of truth, give me a
- 19:28Speaker 1: prediction for this game.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I'll probably I'll go with the Eagles. Yeah, I mean one,
- 19:36Speaker 3: you know, you look at it a couple different ways.
- 19:38Speaker 3: I mean, they're nineteen and one in their last twenty
- 19:41Speaker 3: so there's a sense that they can't keep this going.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I mean there's some truth to that. The law of
- 19:47Speaker 3: averages tells you that. But as long as the team's
- 19:50Speaker 3: on this kind of a roll, I'll ride with them.
- 19:53Speaker 3: So I'll take the Eagles, although I think it's going
- 19:55Speaker 3: to be another tight, low scoring game.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I'll say, you know, twenty one, Ah, you took my
- 20:02Speaker 2: you almost took my score. I'm gonna take the Eagles.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, like twenty three to twenty. I think
- 20:07Speaker 2: this is gonna be another one of those brass knuckle
- 20:10Speaker 2: backyard alley, knock down, drag out type brawls. Somebody's getting
- 20:14Speaker 2: bloodied in this game. But I think, just based on
- 20:17Speaker 2: personnel and roster, the Eagles roster right now is a
- 20:20Speaker 2: lot healthier and a lot deeper than Tampa Bay's, especially
- 20:23Speaker 2: if Mike Evans doesn't play, so I'm gonna go Tampa
- 20:26Speaker 2: Bay losing to the Eagles twenty three to twenty. All right,
- 20:31Speaker 2: that is our outlook for the upcoming game between the
- 20:34Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles at three and oh and the three and
- 20:36Speaker 2: oh Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We'll see how it plays out.
- 20:39Speaker 2: For Ray, didn't drum, Derek Gunn. This has been Birds
- 20:41Speaker 2: Weekly so long. Everybody
