Speaker 1: Yes, this is the last time that you will see this backdrop, because we're going to be moving, we're moving, and as I build up to this move, it reminds me of how much I really dislike moving.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'll tell you what Along with moving, there's a huge purging in my life, yeah, yeah, of stuff that I haven't used or needed in years, and actually most of the stuff that is in the studio.
• 1:18
Speaker 3: I don't use Like a 13-inch type 2x4 that you think you're going to use next time and you have that 2 by four for 20 years.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: That's the one that I strapped to my rear end, so when I'm falling through the hole it'll kind of catch me.
• 1:31
  Speaker 4: Yep.
• 1:31
Speaker 3: There's that Interesting Cell.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: Block 42 is where we're moving to.
• 1:37
  Speaker 1: Yes, very good.
• 1:39
Speaker 4: Well, let's head over to the.
• 1:40
  Speaker 4: Not yet.
• 1:41
  Speaker 4: Not yet.
• 1:41
  Speaker 4: We're making some.
• 1:43
  Speaker 4: We're tweaking.
• 1:44
Speaker 4: Oh, head over to the.
• 1:45
Speaker 4: We're tweaking versus twerking.
• 1:46
Speaker 4: You can do both.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: He's done both and it's not a pleasant sight to see.
• 1:52
Speaker 3: I've seen video, not in person.
• 1:54
  Speaker 3: I think we're good now.
• 1:57
Speaker 3: Next time you do that, wear a belt.
• 1:59
  Speaker 4: Ew.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: Let me get him to unmute.
• 2:03
Speaker 1: Unmute yourself there, randy Golly, look at that that's a cougar.
• 2:09
  Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Is that a cougar behind you?
• 2:11
Speaker 1: Let's bring him up.
• 2:12
  Speaker 1: That's a cougar behind you.
• 2:14
  Speaker 1: Here we go.
• 2:14
  Speaker 1: Is that Jen?
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: Behind you?
• 2:16
  Speaker 1: The cougar.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: It's not the first time Jen's been behind me.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I'll bet, bet yeah through your entire life, thank god.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: Look at that car so how have you been my friend?
• 2:30
Speaker 2: I'm good guys, I see, uh, you got the woes from last week figured out, or a couple weeks ago, whatever it was no, we haven't no, no, you just can't see him today.
• 2:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, we were tested before you joined us new woes.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: Just moved on to new woes.
• 2:45
  Speaker 1: That's exactly right.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: Moving woes now, yeah.
• 2:49
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: So it's good to be with you.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: Paint House is the name of Randy's business out there, and Randy does paint jobs.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: When I first met Randy, I was looking for somebody to put a paint job on the Corvair.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: He looked at me and he said, don, you can't afford me, and I've never had anybody say that to me.
• 3:13
Speaker 1: But now that I've known you for a number of years, he's right, he's right, I can't afford him Because Randy does it.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: I'd like to think I was a little more diplomatic, but maybe I wasn't.
• 3:23
Speaker 2: No, it was all good it?
• 3:24
Speaker 1: I'd like to think I was a little more diplomatic, but maybe I wasn't.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: No, it was all good.
• 3:26
Speaker 1: It's a car, guys, we get it.
• 3:27
Speaker 1: But I will say this, and bragging about you, I don't believe I've ever seen better paint jobs on any vehicle in my entire life.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: This guy is top-notch and 110% on paint jobs and it may take him a while because he's going to do it right.
• 3:43
  Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
• 3:44
Speaker 1: Yes, sir, and one of those obviously fine automobiles that you're working on right now is right behind you.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: Tell us about that.
• 3:51
  Speaker 2: The 70 Cougar.
• 3:53
Speaker 2: We had it at SEMA this last year.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: It was just at the recent Craig Bierman show, texas Auto Elite One best custom there.
• 4:03
Speaker 2: And we're on our way to Triple Crown in Nashville a week and a half from now.
• 4:11
Speaker 1: Now, this is not your car.
• 4:12
  Speaker 1: This is a customer's car.
• 4:15
  Speaker 2: This is a customer's car.
• 4:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, the car that's mine is out in the driveway not getting paid attention too much, and it's a truck.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: I got that, but you know, I I find it interesting that, uh, you do these super builds, if you will, uh, all of them from the ground up and beautiful paint jobs, and these guys that own these cars obviously are putting a lot of money into them and they actually want you to go and show these cars for them.
• 4:42
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 4:42
Speaker 2: I mean, in some ways that's where they get their payback.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: You know, a lot of times they're rebuilding a memory or something, a hole in their life they never had or could afford, and now they can afford to get what they couldn't get back then.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: And, yeah, they want people to appreciate what they've done and what they've allowed us to do.
• 5:06
Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, I was bragging about you to somebody this week and the Studebaker pickup truck, hudson, hudson.
• 5:13
  Speaker 1: I knew I was close.
• 5:14
  Speaker 1: The.
• 5:15
  Speaker 2: Hudson.
• 5:17
Speaker 1: Hudson pickup truck and that was absolutely spectacular because of all the work that you did on it and that really is your shingle on your front door, right there to me, and when I see that in my mind I'm going.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: I've never seen anything quite like it.
• 5:38
Speaker 2: It's definitely unique and it needed a lot of things to be done to it, and presently it lives in the Museum of American Speed up in Lincoln, Nebraska.
• 5:47
  Speaker 2: It's a beautiful museum.
• 5:50
Speaker 2: If anybody has never been, you should go.
• 5:53
Speaker 2: It's owned by the Speedway Motors Group, and man, what a piece of history.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: That place is full of everything, and to be invited to park it in there and let the public see it is kind of exactly what it needed now, when you, when you trailer these cars around for your customers um you trailer them yourself, I assume yes, almost always yeah, because you really can't.
• 6:20
Speaker 1: You know, you got, uh, you know, half a million dollar car and and to give it to somebody else.
• 6:26
Speaker 1: Not that there are responsible people out there that do this sort of thing, but it's kind of like oh, I don't know if I want anybody else messing with this.
• 6:36
  Speaker 2: Yeah it's, maybe I'm a helicopter builder, I don't know.
• 6:39
Speaker 2: You know I just can't, can't let go, but I just like the process of being on the road.
• 6:45
Speaker 2: That's something I enjoy, so it doesn't bother me to drag a trailer around and get to go to some fun places and see friends and get out of this heat and humidity.
• 6:55
Speaker 1: Do you still have the toy trailer?
• 6:58
Speaker 2: Not the one we lived in.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: We now have what I'll call a semi-toy trailer.
• 7:03
Speaker 2: It's got a bathroom and a sleeping space, but it's not a live-in trailer like our last one was.
• 7:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that modular one you were showing us, I believe.
• 7:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, you could call it that.
• 7:12
Speaker 2: It's got some neat features in it.
• 7:14
Speaker 2: Atc Trailers built it for us and they've got a really neat system of things you can add and subtract and just do what you want with the trailer very quickly and easily.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: So I want to know about the rig you got now.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: Have you got you a Freightliner or a Kenworth?
• 7:33
Speaker 2: No, no, I did, I did buy an F450, though.
• 7:36
  Speaker 1: Did you?
• 7:37
Speaker 2: And it's always been sort of my dream truck.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: And I'll just tell you this it's a rough riding truck.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: There's no way around well, especially without a load on the back of it exactly.
• 7:49
Speaker 2: I've done a few things to minimize that issue, but I don't think you can get around it.
• 7:54
Speaker 2: It's an f-450, no matter how you color it do you have to have a cdl for that?
• 7:59
Speaker 2: No, no that you can drive it and insure it normally.
• 8:04
  Speaker 4: That's a one-ton correct.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Well, technically, it's more than that.
• 8:08
Speaker 4: I was thinking one and a quarter.
• 8:10
  Speaker 2: They downrate them.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: The stickers on the door jamb say 14,000, which is the same thing a 350 says, but it's capable of far more.
• 8:19
Speaker 2: But they put the number on the sticker so that guys like me can get regular insurance on them.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: Is it a diesel?
• 8:27
Speaker 2: Yes, the Power Stroke.
• 8:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, and how does that work for you?
• 8:30
Speaker 1: I've always wanted to ask these questions, but now that I know somebody that actually has one of them, how does it work?
• 8:39
Speaker 2: I wouldn't tow with anything but a diesel number one, especially when you're dealing with a lot of weight.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: Anything but a diesel number one, especially when you're dealing with a lot of weight.
• 8:47
Speaker 2: The problem with diesels and it's true of all the brands is they are so clogged up with the emission systems that they can't breathe and you can't idle them for more than 20 or 30 minutes or they will shut themselves off.
• 8:57
Speaker 2: There are just so many things that have taken away some of the advantages of a diesel, which is efficiency and, obviously, power, that it's still the best way to do it, but they have really made it difficult on us to control our costs.
• 9:14
Speaker 2: These trucks, you know they're $100,000 these days.
• 9:20
Speaker 1: Yes, we're well aware of that, yeah.
• 9:22
Speaker 2: It's crazy what they cost.
• 9:23
Speaker 2: They're beautiful pieces of equipment.
• 9:25
Speaker 2: I love the truck, but my God would I love to give it a weight loss program, so to speak, and take off some of those things that clog it up.
• 9:35
Speaker 1: Now, does the same hold true when you buy a Kenworth or a Freightliner?
• 9:39
Speaker 1: That's got the big living quarters on the back of it, but it can also haul a double stacker from.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: You know all the way back to your mama's house.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, they all have emissions now.
• 9:51
  Speaker 2: Yes, Interesting.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: Okay, so besides the Mercury that you've got behind you, what else are you working on?
• 10:01
  Speaker 2: We're working on a 68 Cutlass convertible.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: It's in assembly right now.
• 10:03
  Speaker 2: We've got a 67 C10 truck working on.
• 10:04
  Speaker 2: We're working on a 68 Cutlass convertible.
• 10:05
Speaker 2: It's in assembly right now.
• 10:06
  Speaker 2: We've got a 67 C10 truck.
• 10:09
Speaker 2: We're painting body working and painting for the guys up at Hammer Fab in Austin.
• 10:13
Speaker 2: Beautiful truck, a lot of custom metal work.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: There's a couple in upholstery right now a 55 Chevy Sedan, a 67 Firebird convertible and we've got a 69 Corvette uh uh T top car that is about to go to upholstery.
• 10:33
Speaker 2: So there's several of them in here and varying States of disrepair.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: You mentioned you've got a vehicle over in in a upholstery.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: The last time we talked to you you were looking for an upholsterer.
• 10:43
Speaker 3: You were traveling out of state to get it done at one time.
• 10:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, at the moment.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: I forgot to mention.
• 10:48
  Speaker 2: We've got a 68 Roadrunner.
• 10:54
Speaker 2: You may see a pink fender over here.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: That's part of that car.
• 10:56
Speaker 2: That's also an upholstery.
• 10:56
Speaker 2: So the Roadrunner is at a shop called MTI in College Station.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: They're doing a beautiful job, an amazing use of 3D printing.
• 11:03
Speaker 2: Almost the entire interior has been 3D printed, less the seats and the carpet.
• 11:09
Speaker 2: It's just unbelievable what they're doing now, and that whole game has changed.
• 11:14
Speaker 3: If you're not keeping up with that technology, you're going to be left behind, I'm afraid so you could get in a classic vehicle that maybe a part is no longer made for the dash or maybe a door panel or an armrest and recreate it.
• 11:27
Speaker 3: They could recreate that.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: I'll be darned this cougar is a prime example of it.
• 11:31
Speaker 2: Uh, brent at sculpt garage he's in San Marcos, texas did this one and it's about half 3D printed.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: The entire dash is 3D printed, the console, pieces of the door panels, the whole trunk decoration, the trim panels in the trunk.
• 11:46
Speaker 2: It's amazing what they can do in a computer print it and for the most part, just fine-tune it a little bit and cover it and they're done.
• 11:57
Speaker 2: That's clearly oversimplifying it, but it has changed the game because you can make the radio that's in this Cougar look like Ford or Mercury.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: Put it there instead of like an add-on.
• 12:08
Speaker 2: It's really interesting and trend-setting the way they're changing this whole industry.
• 12:15
Speaker 1: Not to change the subject, but what kind of motors that thing got in it behind you?
• 12:20
Speaker 2: It's the 4.6 Terminator, so it's a supercharged V8 out of the 04 Cobra Mustang, which was a two-year power plant.
• 12:30
Speaker 2: It's very unique, makes a lot of power, but it's a bit tricky to get parts for the customer.
• 12:38
  Speaker 2: We put this.
• 12:39
Speaker 2: We came up with this engine years ago.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: At one point we decided are we going to stick with this or are we going to go to the more modern Coyote engine?
• 12:48
Speaker 2: And he decided to stick with the 4.6 Terminator because it is so unique.
• 12:53
Speaker 2: So it looks big when you open the hood, but it's a tiny little engine.
• 12:59
Speaker 2: Cubic inch wise it's 281 cubic inches Wow.
• 13:02
Speaker 2: But it makes a lot of power.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: But it's not the Eliminator, it's a Terminator.
• 13:07
Speaker 2: It's called the Terminator.
• 13:08
  Speaker 2: Correct Right.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: The car is our emulation of an Eliminator Gotcha.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: The car is our emulation of an eliminator Gotcha.
• 13:14
Speaker 2: Back then Cougar had that as their version of the Boss 302.
• 13:19
Speaker 2: Exactly, a trim package, a performance package.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: They never made a convertible eliminator.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: So we decided with the customer's input well, let's make something they never made, as if it's a prototype or a concept car, and we called it Top Eliminator.
• 13:39
Speaker 2: Just because it's got a top, you eliminate the top when you put it down and it's an eliminator.
• 13:43
Speaker 2: So a little play on words.
• 13:47
Speaker 3: I had a Nova in high school.
• 13:48
Speaker 3: Best friend of mine had a Cougar.
• 13:49
Speaker 3: His dad bought it for him.
• 13:51
Speaker 3: He painted it a silver.
• 13:52
Speaker 3: It had a black interior and it was a pretty car.
• 13:54
Speaker 3: It was a nice car.
• 13:57
  Speaker 2: What year?
• 13:57
  Speaker 2: Nova 72.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: My first car was a 71.
• 14:02
Speaker 2: I love those cars.
• 14:03
Speaker 1: You know if I couldn't see the front end of that car and the actual nose of it?
• 14:10
Speaker 1: Looking down the side, it has the crease that goes from the fender through the door to the actual nose of it.
• 14:14
Speaker 1: Looking down the side, it has the crease that goes from the fender through the door to the actual rear quarter panel.
• 14:18
Speaker 1: There it looks very similar to the Buick Skylark.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I can see that the jam lines.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: It just struck me as odd.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: I really never noticed it, but you know, you just don't see that many Cougars around.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: True, true, and they're neat cars.
• 14:35
Speaker 2: They were the gentleman's hot rod, the upscale Mustang, whatever you want to call it, but a neat car.
• 14:43
Speaker 1: Well, when I think of Mercury, I always think of upscale interiors, nice seats, nicer seats than a Ford?
• 14:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and I think that they did it right.
• 14:51
Speaker 3: It's a shame that brand went away.
• 14:53
Speaker 3: What was the step above the Cougar?
• 14:55
Speaker 3: It was the Mercury Marquis Marquis.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: That was a big car yeah.
• 15:01
Speaker 1: I like to refer to that as the Marquis, but didn't the Cougar actually had a step up.
• 15:07
Speaker 3: There was three levels of the Cougar.
• 15:08
Speaker 3: There was a base.
• 15:09
  Speaker 2: XR7.
• 15:13
  Speaker 1: Yes, that's it.
• 15:14
  Speaker 1: Thank you, xr7.
• 15:15
Speaker 2: Well, randy, it's always great to talk to you, my friend.
• 15:16
  Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thanks.
• 15:17
Speaker 4: And tell Jen we said hi, I'll do it, I'll do it, and we need to talk more often I'm thinking about every six weeks or so we get sidetracked talking to him about these beautiful cars he's building.
• 15:32
Speaker 2: I thought we were going to have a subject matter, but this is fun too.
• 15:35
  Speaker 4: Well, that's it.
• 15:35
Speaker 4: We always get sidetracked, because I'd still like to.
• 15:37
  Speaker 2: That's all right.
• 15:38
Speaker 2: When you're ready, holler.
• 15:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, his story about how he got started and how somebody else some of these kids that are coming out of high school was kind of our target, but we'll have to do that at another time.
• 15:48
  Speaker 1: Well, no Let.
• 15:54
Speaker 2: No, let's kind of brush on that right now.
• 15:56
Speaker 2: So how did you get started, randy All humor aside building models, right, as a kid I loved building models.
• 16:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I hate to say it this way, but I'm just building bigger models and sometimes glue is required.
• 16:07
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, I mean, did you ever work at a dealership?
• 16:12
Speaker 2: No, I have no formal training in this.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: Whatever I've learned, I am still learning the hard way.
• 16:19
Speaker 1: And how long have you been doing it?
• 16:20
  Speaker 2: with your business.
• 16:21
Speaker 2: Oh gosh, We'll just call it 30 years, somewhere in that range.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: Liar, it's longer than that, but you know I will say this that I learned about Randy is the fact that people come to Randy and say, well, you mix me a special color, and that is really his specialty in my world.
• 16:40
Speaker 1: He does beautiful work in the garage, but mixing those paint colors truly is outstanding.
• 16:46
Speaker 3: I don't know anybody that can do it like you do.
• 16:47
Speaker 3: I'm interested in a nice brown we have one called Hot Chocolate.
• 16:52
Speaker 3: There you go, there you go.
• 16:53
Speaker 3: It matches me this color on the cougar.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: They had a color like this in that day, yep, and we mixed it up.
• 17:02
Speaker 2: I did my spin on it's got a little pearl in it.
• 17:04
Speaker 2: They called it school bus yellow.
• 17:06
Speaker 2: I call it short bus pearl short bus pearl which we've all taken
• 17:11
Speaker 4: you should recognize that color.
• 17:12
  Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 17:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, you know it spoke to me and I know exactly where it came from.
• 17:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, Don't lick the windows.
• 17:21
Speaker 1: And you know I'm good at that oh my gosh.
• 17:25
