- 0:00SPEAKER_00: In our journey through the literature of the Eucharist, we are talking about the consecration.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: The consecration is that core of our Eucharistic liturgy in which the priest prays
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: the words over the bread and wine that transform them from being ordinary bread
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: and wine into being the body and blood of Christ.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And if you listen to the words of consecration in your attentive,
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: you might notice that those words are not found anywhere in Scripture.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And so it might occur to you ask, why would that be?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Why would it be that the most important words of our entire faith
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: in some way are not found in Scripture?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Well, it's because these words predate Scripture.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: These words were already being said before a single word of
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: the New Testament scripture was written.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: These words are the core of what it means to be Christian.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: St. Paul is probably the earliest of the New Testament scriptures,
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: and he's writing about 30 years after Jesus died.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: But the apostles gathered in the upper room did what Christ had told them.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And offered bread and wine in remembrance of him.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And used, most likely, this formula.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We don't have it written down, so we don't know.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But this is the oldest core of the liturgy.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Everything else in the liturgy has changed,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: adapted,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: been developed over time, is a reflection on what Christ did, is an expansion.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And all of that is beautiful and good, as we've been talking about.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: But this is the core.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And I think that is so important for us as Catholics
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: because our faith doesn't revolve around studying the Bible or reading the Bible
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: or thinking about the Bible.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: All of that is good.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: The Bible is good.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It's the word of God,
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: but it flows from the church and it flows from a church that is celebrating
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: the Eucharist, participating in this celebration that Christ left them.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And so what we are doing here this morning is the most important thing
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: that Christians have ever done,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: to come and to participate in Christ's offering to the Father.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And that we see most perfectly exemplified, stated in those words of consecration.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So as we come here day after day,
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: let us not only think about our faith,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: not only study our faith,
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Not reflect on our faith,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: but let us do what Christ did because the participation in the liturgy is a doing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: We are called to participate in Christ's own self offering to become like Christ,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: to receive his life and to offer ourselves on behalf of the world to the Father.
