Speaker 1: Hey everyone and welcome back.
• 0:01
Speaker 1: Today we're going to be doing a deep dive into something pretty fascinating, I think.
• 0:05
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 0:06
Speaker 1: The Edge AI Foundation.
• 0:07
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 0:08
Speaker 1: And you know, when you hear foundation, sometimes you're like ugh, another foundation.
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, but this one, I think is worth looking into.
• 0:15
  Speaker 2: It really is.
• 0:17
Speaker 1: And to understand why, I think you first have to understand the whole concept of what Edge AI is.
• 0:23
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: And maybe you could give us like the quick rundown of that.
• 0:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, so Edge AI.
• 0:26
Speaker 2: It's basically instead of sending all of your data to the cloud for processing, you're doing all the processing right on your device.
• 0:35
Speaker 1: Okay, so like when I talk to my smart speaker, it's not sending everything back to Amazon servers.
• 0:40
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: That's kind of cool actually.
• 0:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, so it has a lot of benefits in terms of speed and efficiency, right and also data privacy.
• 0:48
  Speaker 1: Oh, interesting.
• 0:49
Speaker 2: And you can also use it in places where there's, you know, not reliable internet.
• 0:53
Speaker 2: I see, so there's a lot of advantages.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: Okay, I'm starting to see why this is a big deal.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, but where does this foundation part come in?
• 0:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, so the article that we're looking at today is an announcement about their evolution.
• 1:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, they actually started as the TinyML Foundation TinyML TinyML.
• 1:11
  Speaker 1: What is that?
• 1:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know how we have all these like little microcontrollers and everything these days.
• 1:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, like in your thermostat in your car.
• 1:18
Speaker 2: Tinyml was all about getting machine learning to run on these tiny devices.
• 1:24
  Speaker 1: Oh.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: So, but as the field kind of expanded beyond just tiny stuff, I see.
• 1:29
Speaker 2: They decided to rebrand to the Edge AI Foundation to reflect that broader scope.
• 1:34
  Speaker 1: Makes sense.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: So they're not just about the tech itself, but also supporting the whole ecosystem around it.
• 1:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, and this is where it gets really interesting for companies.
• 1:43
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: Because Edge AI is not just a cool concept anymore.
• 1:46
Speaker 2: It's actually poised to revolutionize entire industries.
• 1:50
Speaker 2: So we're talking healthcare manufacturing, even how companies like Amazon operate their smart devices.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: Okay, so now you've got my attention.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: Let's dig into what the foundation is actually doing and why companies should be throwing their support behind it and why companies should be throwing their support behind it.
• 2:03
Speaker 2: Okay, so first you have to understand the sheer potential we're talking about here.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: This article mentions things like neuromorphic computing.
• 2:10
  Speaker 1: Neuromorphic computing.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: Which is essentially building chips that mimic the human brain.
• 2:15
Speaker 1: So AI that learns like we do, exactly, that sounds crazy powerful.
• 2:22
  Speaker 2: It is.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: It means edge AI could become incredibly efficient, wow, adaptable, able to solve problems in ways that we can't even imagine yet.
• 2:31
Speaker 2: And that's just one example.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: We're also seeing things like generative AI, the stuff that creates text, images, even music, starting to run on edge devices.
• 2:42
  Speaker 1: Hold on.
• 2:42
Speaker 1: I got to back up for a second.
• 2:43
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: We're going from my smart speaker responding a little bit faster to AI.
• 2:48
Speaker 1: That's basically creating things on the fly, right All on like a tiny device.
• 2:53
Speaker 2: That's the power of it.
• 2:54
  Speaker 1: OK.
• 2:54
Speaker 2: And the foundation is really at the forefront of all this.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: So they're not just talking about it, they're actually building, like, the resources and connections to make this stuff happen.
• 3:02
  Speaker 2: Exactly so.
• 3:03
Speaker 2: There are, like this, bridge between all the brilliant minds working on this and the companies who could benefit from it.
• 3:09
  Speaker 1: OK.
• 3:09
Speaker 2: And that's why companies should be paying attention.
• 3:11
Speaker 2: All right, you know, the foundation is creating a space for collaboration and innovation.
• 3:16
  Speaker 1: Hmm.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: And, importantly, a focus on making sure that edge AI is developed responsibly and ethically.
• 3:22
  Speaker 1: Right, of course.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: So let's actually talk about some of those resources.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: What are they actually doing to support companies?
• 3:28
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: And this whole, you know, edge AI movement.
• 3:31
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 3:31
Speaker 2: So one of their big initiatives is something called Edge AI Labs.
• 3:36
  Speaker 1: Edge AI Labs.
• 3:37
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 3:37
Speaker 1: Think of it as like this giant sandbox where researchers and developers can share data, sets, models and code.
• 3:44
Speaker 1: I see it's all about open collaboration and accelerating the pace of innovation.
• 3:49
Speaker 2: So it's like a giant brain trust where everyone's kind of contributing and benefiting.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: Exactly, and it lowers the barrier to entry for companies who want to get involved in edge AI.
• 3:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, giving them access to cutting edge tools and expertise without having to start from scratch, that sounds like a huge advantage, especially for smaller companies that might not have the resources to build all this themselves.
• 4:07
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: Okay, cool, what else?
• 4:10
Speaker 2: And then there's the EDGE, aip, which stands for Academia and Industry Partnership.
• 4:14
Speaker 2: Okay, and this program focuses on training the next generation of AI leaders.
• 4:19
  Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
• 4:20
Speaker 2: Bridging the gap between what's being taught in universities and the practical skills that are needed in the industry.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: So companies are basically getting a pipeline of talented individuals who are already up to speed on the latest.
• 4:31
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 4:31
  Speaker 1: In edge AI.
• 4:32
  Speaker 2: It's a win-win situation.
• 4:33
Speaker 2: Companies get access to skilled talent.
• 4:36
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: And individuals get the training and mentorship they need to succeed in this rapidly evolving field.
• 4:42
  Speaker 1: That's awesome, yeah.
• 4:43
Speaker 1: So we've got these labs, we've got these partnerships Yep.
• 4:46
Speaker 1: What else is going on?
• 4:48
Speaker 2: So it's not just about the technical skills.
• 4:50
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: The Edge AIP also emphasizes responsible AI development Right, so ensuring that ethical considerations are baked into the process from the start.
• 4:59
  Speaker 1: That's huge.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean we can't just focus on the cool factor of AI without thinking about the potential downsides.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: Absolutely, and that's another area where the foundation plays a really vital role.

• 5:32
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: They have a voice in shaping the future of edge AI.
• 5:37
  Speaker 1: I see.
• 5:37
Speaker 2: Ensuring it aligns with their values and the needs of their industry.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: That's a really good point, yeah, okay.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: So we've talked about how this is good for the companies, point.
• 5:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
• 5:44
Speaker 1: So we've talked about how this is good for the companies themselves.
• 5:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, but what about the bigger picture, like how does supporting the Edge AI Foundation benefit society as a whole?
• 5:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's where it gets really exciting.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: Remember how we talked about Edge AI's potential to democratize access to AI.
