Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm Steve Lorick. I'm the frontman of a band called
- 0:21Speaker 1: Late Nineties from Perth, like a olt rock band. Yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and very happy to be doing this Heavy mag.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Interview Fantasy May. Thanks for joining us today, brother, cheers
- 0:37Speaker 2: just having me. Oh wait, So Late Nineties are making
- 0:40Speaker 2: the trek over from Perth to be part of Big
- 0:42Speaker 2: Sound twenty twenty five. But she's going to be held
- 0:44Speaker 2: in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley from September two to the fifth,
- 0:48Speaker 2: so that's not far away. Brother. You're starting to never
- 0:50Speaker 2: start a tingling bit.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, like, like I was just telling you
- 0:54Speaker 1: before we started. I've been away the last couple of weeks,
- 0:58Speaker 1: so we've got a weeks to knuckle down and get
- 1:02Speaker 1: the set all ready to go. The boys have been
- 1:05Speaker 1: practicing without me because they haven't been away, but yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm super keen. I'm really keen to just hanging with
- 1:13Speaker 1: like a lot of the other bands. They're like Bad
- 1:17Speaker 1: Juju and Live and the Delusionals and yeah, just kind
- 1:20Speaker 1: of just chat with everyone and play some fun shows. Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 2: No. So picked Out features over one hundred and twenty
- 1:27Speaker 2: bands playing across eight each stages, so there's a lot
- 1:29Speaker 2: to choose from. So straight off the bat mate, tell
- 1:32Speaker 2: us why should Putterns come and see the late nineties
- 1:34Speaker 2: and mark it down on the list?
- 1:38Speaker 1: We I think we're like the only like heavy band
- 1:41Speaker 1: playing out of Perth, So that's a that's a definite reason,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Like there isn't that many bands that have got that
- 1:52Speaker 1: that those heaviest sort of influences. So I think I
- 1:57Speaker 1: think it's we do a good job of representing that
- 2:02Speaker 1: kind of more alternative scene. I think our music is
- 2:06Speaker 1: not too heavy where people might be off put by it,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but they might still enjoy it if they're not necessarily
- 2:13Speaker 1: into the heaviest stuff. So yeah, so we're kind of
- 2:16Speaker 1: middle ground, I guess for the punter, and yeah, I
- 2:23Speaker 1: think we do. The music we make is a little different,
- 2:26Speaker 1: so I think people will like it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well. Sorry to put you on the spotlight that too, bro,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I know it's not easy to especially when you're not
- 2:32Speaker 2: ready for it, but you did a good job. What
- 2:36Speaker 2: does big Down mean to emerging Australian bands like yourselves?
- 2:40Speaker 1: A lot? That was one of our first goals when
- 2:43Speaker 1: we first started our band, like five years ago. Every
- 2:46Speaker 1: year we've applied, never gotten the call up and finally
- 2:50Speaker 1: to have the call up is really really huge to
- 2:53Speaker 1: be on the same industry festival as like a lot
- 2:58Speaker 1: of our favorite bands and like the repertoire of bands
- 3:01Speaker 1: that have really like come before and done Big Sound
- 3:05Speaker 1: and gone on to do massive things. It's really cool.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And just to have our name in that, have our
- 3:13Speaker 1: hat in the ring, you know, is quite important to
- 3:16Speaker 1: us and special for us. So yeah, we're very grateful
- 3:18Speaker 1: to have the opportunity.
- 3:20Speaker 2: You mentioned you've tried a few times before and haven't
- 3:22Speaker 2: got through, but you did this here, Like, what's you
- 3:24Speaker 2: do different? Did you check one hundred old eighty there
- 3:26Speaker 2: or something or.
- 3:29Speaker 1: No?
- 3:29Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I think maybe maybe something to do
- 3:34Speaker 1: with the neck Deep tour we did. Maybe that got
- 3:39Speaker 1: some people, some people may have heard of us. That
- 3:42Speaker 1: had something to do with how how we got in.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm not too sure. I don't really know how it works.
- 3:49Speaker 2: It just happened.
- 3:52Speaker 1: How.
- 3:53Speaker 2: There's plenty of going on at Big Sound. You've got
- 3:55Speaker 2: your show case gigs, there's wake shop, the networking to
- 3:58Speaker 2: be done. So have you started? Are you going to
- 4:00Speaker 2: strategically plan out your time there? I guess to make
- 4:02Speaker 2: sure most of them you're just gonna have a general
- 4:04Speaker 2: idea and roll with the punches.
- 4:06Speaker 1: There's definitely like some bands I want to be able
- 4:10Speaker 1: to catch. Like I said before, Lies and the Delusional,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was a big fan of them and Bad Juju
- 4:15Speaker 1: and Closure from Sydney. So yeah, I'm definitely going to
- 4:20Speaker 1: be having a look at the itinerary. I'm going to
- 4:23Speaker 1: be running around the valley trying to trying to get
- 4:25Speaker 1: into as many shows, see as many bands as I can,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and yeah, just really made the most of it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: It's pretty big place of valley too, so make sure
- 4:34Speaker 2: you take bread crumbs or something the drop while you running,
- 4:36Speaker 2: otherwise you might get.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Give me a good idea. Definitely gonna I think we're
- 4:42Speaker 1: definitely going to have to have between the four of us,
- 4:45Speaker 1: are gonna have to have our locations shared. It probably
- 4:49Speaker 1: won't be too much reception and no one's going to
- 4:51Speaker 1: be checking their phones in the middle of a gig either.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Sot off making a meeting point in one stage and
- 4:56Speaker 2: just going there, make it, make it pump tu. So
- 5:00Speaker 2: you've got so much all to meat, Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Exactly at this time every night, we're going to meet
- 5:07Speaker 1: for a pinty.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Guinness loving your work. So when and where a late
- 5:12Speaker 2: nineties playing.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So we're playing The bright Side on the Thursday night,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I believe, the bright Side Outdoors and the other show
- 5:27Speaker 1: I have completely forgotten.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But it's on the schedule schedule.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But the Monday night we are doing a an extra
- 5:36Speaker 1: show which is a Destroyer Lines showcase. So and we
- 5:39Speaker 1: are playing on Wednesday, but I've completely forgotten where that is.
- 5:43Speaker 2: You got to like going on running, you just come
- 5:44Speaker 2: back to holidays. You can't be expected.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: One thing about Big Sound is, like we said, there's
- 5:51Speaker 2: over one hundred and twenty bands there, so people can't
- 5:53Speaker 2: be expected to know every band. So someone's not familiar
- 5:56Speaker 2: with late nineties, Mate, give give us a bit of
- 5:58Speaker 2: a history of the band.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Yep. So we started about five years ago. The other
- 6:05Speaker 1: boy three boys, two of them are twins, and the
- 6:10Speaker 1: drummer Elliott. He's Elliott. Brody and Zach have always been
- 6:14Speaker 1: best mates ever since they were kids, and then they
- 6:17Speaker 1: played in bands in high school and primary school together,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and then I kind of came into the picture after
- 6:25Speaker 1: after high school. I'm a little bit younger than the
- 6:27Speaker 1: other boys, yep. And so we started jamming, started playing
- 6:31Speaker 1: some shows, pretty much like during COVID. I think we
- 6:35Speaker 1: were about to play our first show and then COVID happened,
- 6:37Speaker 1: so that kind of pushed things back a bit. So, yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: we started they Can put our first song in twenty
- 6:45Speaker 1: twenty one, and yeah, just been on the grind since.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Been kind of changed our sound a bit over the
- 6:51Speaker 1: last few years. We kind of started a bit more soft,
- 6:55Speaker 1: still had those like emo kind of influences, but did
- 6:58Speaker 1: enjoy like a bit of of more like surf punk
- 7:02Speaker 1: sort of stuff. And now we're more alternative rock, post
- 7:07Speaker 1: hardcore with bits of metal in their new metal sort
- 7:10Speaker 1: of sort of stuff now. So we've kind of gone
- 7:14Speaker 1: a bit heavier as we've made our way through and
- 7:17Speaker 1: kind of figured out our sound a bit more. Yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 1: we've put out a couple of EPs, got a new
- 7:22Speaker 1: song coming out in two weeks just before Big Sound.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And yeah, and you mentioned you played with neck Deep.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Was that the national tour or just.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Just national tour we did?
- 7:35Speaker 2: That would have been fucking interesane, bro dude.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It was the best week of all of our lives. Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it was neck Deep in State Champs and yeah, it
- 7:45Speaker 1: was unreal.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Some of the you with both of them and they're.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Just so lovely. Yeah, and both bands went out of
- 7:53Speaker 1: their way to be nice to us and chat to
- 7:56Speaker 1: us and give us a hand and give us good
- 7:57Speaker 1: advice and things like that, which was really really sweat.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah, as a young emerging band, what sort of like
- 8:04Speaker 2: you go on a tool like that, like you've got
- 8:05Speaker 2: to have funny course, but do you treat it like
- 8:07Speaker 2: a life lesson as well or do you try and
- 8:09Speaker 2: lands it and watch them and see how things are done?
- 8:11Speaker 2: What do you just?
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah, what are you're doing? We were definitely just like
- 8:16Speaker 1: there wasn't a single night that any one of us
- 8:19Speaker 1: didn't watch the full set of either band unless we're
- 8:22Speaker 1: at merch and it was a venue where we couldn't
- 8:24Speaker 1: see properly. But yeah, like it was like those two
- 8:31Speaker 1: bands are the top of the game of the genre,
- 8:33Speaker 1: like really the best bands in the world to do
- 8:36Speaker 1: pop punk music, to do like rock music in general.
- 8:40Speaker 1: You know, like it's it's crazy to watch bands of that.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Calibar just put on an epic show, like and do.
- 8:49Speaker 1: We did five shows in a week and it was
- 8:51Speaker 1: like every single night, the energy was insane and just remarkable,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and like their abilities to work the crowd to play
- 8:57Speaker 1: their instruments, to just dial everything in from the musicians
- 9:05Speaker 1: to everyone in their teams, you know, their guitar texts,
- 9:08Speaker 1: the front of house, guys, et cetera. Like it's really
- 9:12Speaker 1: just a insanely well oiled machine, and it was really
- 9:16Speaker 1: inspirational and really cool to see how people do it
- 9:20Speaker 1: at that level.
- 9:21Speaker 2: So you're released in your new single Low on August
- 9:24Speaker 2: of twenty ninth, Mates, So what can you tell us
- 9:25Speaker 2: about that song?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yep, So it's a kind of grungy with grunt. It's
- 9:35Speaker 1: basically a grunge song with like a heavy breakdown and
- 9:40Speaker 1: kind of like pop punk sort of melodies a kind
- 9:44Speaker 1: of a bit of a blend. And that's kind of, like,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I guess, kind of sums up the kind of music
- 9:48Speaker 1: we make, like we do, take from a lot of
- 9:50Speaker 1: different genres, and I guess that's kind of what makes
- 9:53Speaker 1: us sound like us. But yeah, it's a song about
- 9:59Speaker 1: going through tough shit and not knowing being on sure
- 10:04Speaker 1: how are you going to come out of it? And
- 10:07Speaker 1: you know, wanting the best for yourself than beating yourself
- 10:11Speaker 1: up about being bad and not being where you want
- 10:15Speaker 1: to be and that sort of thing. So Yeah, it
- 10:18Speaker 1: comes out in a couple of weeks, and yeah, it's
- 10:21Speaker 1: our first song since our second EP, which came out
- 10:25Speaker 1: like three or four months ago now, so yeah, super excited.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Is it a standalone song or part of a b EP?
- 10:32Speaker 2: Your album picture?
- 10:33Speaker 1: I think this one's just going to be a standalone single.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I produced this one, which is the first time I've
- 10:39Speaker 1: done it for our band, so we're kind of just
- 10:42Speaker 1: seeing how it would go. And thankfully I've managed to
- 10:46Speaker 1: win the boys trust. They came for me to keep
- 10:50Speaker 1: doing the recording going forward. But yeah, at this stage,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I think it's just going to be a standalone single.
- 10:56Speaker 1: But we are getting back in the studio very soon
- 10:59Speaker 1: to work on something big.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yuh on that, Like, how did you go producing your
- 11:03Speaker 2: own own stuff?
- 11:04Speaker 3: Like?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Is it hard to sort of step back and be
- 11:06Speaker 2: objective when you're so close to the material.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was really hard to be like, Okay,
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's done. I was imming and rowing whether I should
- 11:20Speaker 1: mix it or we should get someone else, and we
- 11:22Speaker 1: ended up getting someone else to mix it. We got Emmett,
- 11:24Speaker 1: who does live sound for us and owns a studio
- 11:28Speaker 1: that we recorded it at, to mix it. So it
- 11:31Speaker 1: was cool because it was still like part of our
- 11:33Speaker 1: He's obviously part of our team, so it was really
- 11:35Speaker 1: cool to have him do that. But yeah, I think
- 11:39Speaker 1: if I was to mix it, I would have literally
- 11:42Speaker 1: I would have I would have never been able to
- 11:44Speaker 1: be like, oh, it's done. But when you're recording it,
- 11:48Speaker 1: it's like it was still hard. Like we we spent
- 11:53Speaker 1: a lot of time just working on things and really
- 11:56Speaker 1: like adding extra guitar parts. I think we tracked bass
- 11:59Speaker 1: twice for some reason, and like I re recorded vocals
- 12:03Speaker 1: like three times because I just wasn't happy with it.
- 12:07Speaker 1: And you know that, well, that's the benefit of doing yourself,
- 12:10Speaker 1: but also makes you can't Also, you know you're not
- 12:14Speaker 1: just in the studio for a day smashing it.
- 12:16Speaker 2: You know you haven't got someone saying that's good enough, mate,
- 12:19Speaker 2: leave it?
- 12:20Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And what else the late nighties got coming up? Broin
- 12:24Speaker 2: like big sound different? Now you got some other plans.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yep, we've got We're going to be doing another tour
- 12:31Speaker 1: hopefully at the end of this year to promote this
- 12:34Speaker 1: new single and the rest of the music we've got
- 12:37Speaker 1: coming out.
- 12:39Speaker 3: And yeah, it's my celestement, a bot of my soul.
- 13:07Speaker 4: On the cone filled bows.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Boys, boys, any sel be.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Sel the best just needs h.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So M.
- 13:56Speaker 2: I need to me.
- 14:03Speaker 5: What if all show.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Still stud shas.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Were all here.
- 14:13Speaker 4: It's my choice, le myself side just ch.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I'm waiting chums wama and jumps.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Up somewhere. Cha pray I'm saying things, Miss mis
