0:46
Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Caraley with Let's Talk,
0:49
Speaker 2: And today is going to be I just want to
0:54
Speaker 2: let this. I can't even hold it in. Today is
0:57
Speaker 2: gonna be one of those shows that is going to
1:00
Speaker 2: be probably all over the place and probably might even
1:06
Speaker 2: touch a few nerves. Yeah, it depends on if Julie,
1:12
Speaker 2: depends on where your loyalty lies, whether it's a WU situation,
1:17
Speaker 2: whether it's a Marshall situation. But let me just give
1:20
Speaker 2: let me make sure I let everybody know who's all here.
1:22
Speaker 2: So Hollis Lewis is here, what's going on? And Lisa Odie,
1:25
Speaker 2: the Football Queen is here.
1:27
Speaker 4: Hello.
1:27
Speaker 2: All right, and we are sponsored by Frank Walker. Real Talk,
1:31
Speaker 2: Real Experience, Real Results. You can visit Frank Walker at
1:34
Speaker 2: Frank Walker law dot com for more information. All right, Marshall, Yeah,
1:43
Speaker 2: huge win, right, a huge, huge win.
1:47
Speaker 4: Hollis heck can wear the crowd badge of staying up.
1:50
Speaker 2: And but the thing is, it was such a great win.
1:56
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, they were down seventeen to nothing
1:58
Speaker 2: at half and they start the way back up, so
2:01
Speaker 2: they go, you know, it's back and forth. They tied up,
2:04
Speaker 2: and I think it's like in double or maybe triple
2:06
Speaker 2: overtime and then instead of just like you know, they
2:09
Speaker 2: go for two win the game. And it's just it
2:12
Speaker 2: was really a phenomenal game. It's a phenomenal coaching job too,
2:15
Speaker 2: to keep them boys just together. Well, okay, so that
2:19
Speaker 2: was that was where I was going to go because
2:21
Speaker 2: one of the things that I have over coach Huff's tenure,
2:28
Speaker 2: I think he is that guy who just watching him
2:32
Speaker 2: interact with players interact with coaches, he seems to be
2:36
Speaker 2: that kind of jolly, positive kind of coach who makes
2:42
Speaker 2: you feel like we can do anything. And I think
2:46
Speaker 2: that rubs off Lisa, on on the players, on the coaches,
2:50
Speaker 2: And I even think he's got the I think he's
2:53
Speaker 2: got the fan base, which I would have said earlier
2:55
Speaker 2: in the season that he didn't know. Man, our fan
2:58
Speaker 2: base is fickle. Well, that's true, but I was going,
3:03
Speaker 2: I'm thinking that they're they're a little bit more excited
3:07
Speaker 2: about him now, you know. I think when the conversation
3:11
Speaker 2: was talking about him leaving, you know, the possibility of
3:14
Speaker 2: him leaving, I would make the case that a lot
3:19
Speaker 2: of fans were like, hey, you know, we we we
3:22
Speaker 2: weren't excited about you anyway. We were ready to let
3:24
Speaker 2: you go anyway. But all of a sudden, how many
3:29
Speaker 2: games in a row do you win? I mean, and
3:32
Speaker 2: and and all of a sudden that changes that dynamic
3:36
Speaker 2: of do we really want to get rid of him?
3:39
Speaker 2: Because there's no way. But it's not about gettingrid.
3:42
Speaker 5: No, no, now, it's about keeping him, I think.
3:46
Speaker 2: And isn't that interesting that Yeah, now people are saying, oh,
3:52
Speaker 2: he shouldn't go, you know, don't leave. But but did
3:55
Speaker 2: you did you want me to go?
3:57
Speaker 5: You know, going back to what you said abouts and
4:01
Speaker 5: how fickle they can be at times. If you look
4:03
Speaker 5: at the resume that that huff is established in at
4:07
Speaker 5: Marshall and Huntington in general, you know he's making history.
4:11
Speaker 5: I mean you look over the accumulation of what three
4:13
Speaker 5: years the guy beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Okay,
4:17
Speaker 5: that's on the resume, and just the other night that
4:21
Speaker 5: this is I don't know if people realize this, but
4:22
Speaker 5: this is the first berth in the Sun Belt Championship
4:25
Speaker 5: that Marshall's earned.
4:26
Speaker 4: So there's another piece of history.
4:28
Speaker 5: So if you start adding up all of the different
4:31
Speaker 5: little victories, it makes it makes a big, big impact.
4:34
Speaker 2: I didn't even think about that because you do have
4:36
Speaker 2: to he beat Notre Dame Virginia that Sun Belt East champs, right,
4:44
Speaker 2: and now you're in the championship first time, first time,
4:46
Speaker 2: and you'll go to a big Bowl game. So it's like, now,
4:49
Speaker 2: I mean, what can you say? What is your You
4:53
Speaker 2: can't say negative? And you pick with sixteen players in
4:57
Speaker 2: the NFL.
4:59
Speaker 4: That's on the resume.
5:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, so should should the reality be coach, we
5:06
Speaker 2: want you to stay. I don't think we're past that
5:09
Speaker 2: because I don't to your point, you said it last time.
5:12
Speaker 2: We were here, Lisa, I can afford to keep him. Now, Wow,
5:15
Speaker 2: that's the thing now, because he's I mean again, if
5:17
Speaker 2: you put that resume, just what we said, I'm sure
5:20
Speaker 2: we're missing a bunch of stuff as far as whether
5:22
Speaker 2: other coaches have gone and everything like that. So if
5:25
Speaker 2: you put that resume out there, you gotta get. You
5:27
Speaker 2: gotta The guy's going to the next job, and he's
5:29
Speaker 2: going to a big job, and he's going to get
5:30
Speaker 2: a big, big check. So so you you think he's
5:33
Speaker 2: gone and you have to be. I mean, how how
5:37
Speaker 2: could you not? I mean, unless you love it your lifer,
5:39
Speaker 2: that's different. But if you're looking to move up to
5:41
Speaker 2: the ranks, I mean, listen, to keep your mind. He
5:44
Speaker 2: came from Alabama, so are you looking to get back
5:47
Speaker 2: to an Alabama? If you're looking to get back there,
5:49
Speaker 2: then you gotta go.
5:49
Speaker 4: I think I think Huntington won't put up a fight.
5:52
Speaker 4: I think that they realize.
5:53
Speaker 5: I think I think Southern mess has already probably put
5:55
Speaker 5: an offer on the table. I think that's established. I mean,
5:57
Speaker 5: where there's smoke, there's there's fire. So I feel like
6:01
Speaker 5: that's already there in the works. And so now I
6:03
Speaker 5: feel like that Marshall's in that mode where they're trying
6:05
Speaker 5: to find a way financially and in a contract, a
6:08
Speaker 5: way to keep him in Huntington now. And I don't
6:11
Speaker 5: know which way that pendulum is going to swing, but
6:14
Speaker 5: I do feel like they realize what they have and
6:16
Speaker 5: they're going to fight to keep it.
6:18
Speaker 2: Hallis. I know you have a list of names of
6:20
Speaker 2: people who I guess names have been thrown out. There's
6:24
Speaker 2: Wvu Notari. Okay, well, I know one name as far
6:27
Speaker 2: as the Huntington I think Tony Gibson is what they're
6:30
Speaker 2: talking about from n C State. Yes, he's a Westerndia kid,
6:33
Speaker 2: Westerndon guy from Van He's coaching at n C State,
6:36
Speaker 2: So I know his name has been thrown out there
6:37
Speaker 2: for Huntington. Okay, So here's here. Yeah, here's I confuse
6:42
Speaker 2: you on that one. But here's what. Here's what's interesting
6:45
Speaker 2: to me. I think when you when you start to
6:51
Speaker 2: look at Huff coach Huff, and you look at the
6:54
Speaker 2: fan base and you try to ask what does the
6:57
Speaker 2: fan base want that he hasn't done? And then for him,
7:02
Speaker 2: are you upset or could you have in your gut
7:05
Speaker 2: kind of like well, they were trying. They were talking
7:07
Speaker 2: all this negative when when you know, Okay.
7:13
Speaker 4: So you're gonna have games where where the fans are
7:16
Speaker 4: going to turn on you.
7:16
Speaker 2: I don't care who you are, and I'm gonna make it.
7:18
Speaker 2: I'm gonna make the case that Marshall Marshall is is
7:22
Speaker 2: probably one of the greatest fan bases out there just
7:26
Speaker 2: with the inclusion of its history. Okay, but it can
7:31
Speaker 2: be fickle, It can be very fickle. And I'm going
7:35
Speaker 2: to make the case that coach Huff at this point
7:42
Speaker 2: becomes one of Marshall's greatest coaches in football. Yeah, he
7:47
Speaker 2: definitely had a great run, you know what I'm saying.
7:49
Speaker 2: I mean, Marshall is a great job. I think it's
7:54
Speaker 2: a very underrated job. I think how you're able to
7:57
Speaker 2: recruit because of where Huntington is. You're in this ri
8:00
Speaker 2: state area of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, You're close to Virginia, Maryland,
8:04
Speaker 2: d C. Pennsylvania, and it's just something special about that place.
8:09
Speaker 2: And if you can do it right, you can get
8:11
Speaker 2: some major and big Wednesday. I think too, who the
8:17
Speaker 2: recruiter is, who the head coach is. I think is
8:22
Speaker 2: the guy who's going to impress you more so than
8:25
Speaker 2: let's just say Marshall's history, because you know, I can
8:30
Speaker 2: I can go back when when I was at Marshall.
8:33
Speaker 2: Playing at Marshall, you would have guys come in and
8:37
Speaker 2: you know, we didn't have all that they have now
8:40
Speaker 2: and we weren't winning, so there was nothing. There was
8:44
Speaker 2: nothing really to draw you in. But now Marshall has
8:49
Speaker 2: everything and the and the thing that they that they
8:52
Speaker 2: have to have is they have to have that personality
8:55
Speaker 2: as the head coach to represent it at Bob Pruitt
8:58
Speaker 2: was that and for sure tough is that? Yeah? Holiday
9:01
Speaker 2: was that too, I think as well, Like like I said,
9:04
Speaker 2: I think it's a great job, and I think, you know,
9:06
Speaker 2: I think he's done an excellent job there and unfortunately
9:10
Speaker 2: it's just probably if he has bigger aspirations right right,
9:15
Speaker 2: and it's fine, and I think we just got to
9:17
Speaker 2: find the next guy.
9:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, but I also think whoever, I mean, hopefully it
9:21
Speaker 5: will have will stay. But if not the next guy,
9:24
Speaker 5: I think they've got a lot to offer recruiting, not
9:26
Speaker 5: only what you said about facilities and the upgrades and
9:29
Speaker 5: what we you know, have as far as athletics, but
9:32
Speaker 5: also being a part of the Sun Belt Conference. I
9:34
Speaker 5: mean when they were in Conference USA, I mean that
9:36
Speaker 5: was kind of spread out and it wasn't as attractive
9:39
Speaker 5: of a conference to offer recruits as the sun Belt
9:42
Speaker 5: is because you've got local teams you can travel to,
9:45
Speaker 5: those fans can follow.
9:48
Speaker 4: It's just it's a.
9:48
Speaker 5: Better fit for for Marshall than what what Doc Holliday
9:53
Speaker 5: had to deal with in Conference USA, in my opinion.
9:55
Speaker 2: And it's and you also created an advantage because if
9:57
Speaker 2: you're in a sun Belt you have a lot of
9:59
Speaker 2: those Southern other than teams, and then you gotta come
10:01
Speaker 2: up to Huntington in November and late October, so you
10:04
Speaker 2: do have a little advantage there for them, you know
10:06
Speaker 2: them later season games. And I just I and I'm
10:09
Speaker 2: really impressed just the way in which like Hub did
10:12
Speaker 2: and I talked about this last time, scheduling those w
10:14
Speaker 2: excuse me, those Notre Dames, those Ohio's the Virginia Tech
10:19
Speaker 2: scheduling those games. I think it's big for the program.
10:21
Speaker 2: It's gonna bring money into the program, it's gonna let
10:23
Speaker 2: you compete at a national level, get nationally televised games.
10:27
Speaker 2: So I really think the manner in which he sort
10:29
Speaker 2: of molded and guided the program. Hopefully the next coach
10:33
Speaker 2: or if there is going to be a next coach,
10:35
Speaker 2: can kind of leach onto that and continue well and
10:38
Speaker 2: to those games. I know that when I was at
10:43
Speaker 2: Marshall Sunny, Randall took us to like Mississippi State and
10:47
Speaker 2: they had just beat like Alabama, and we were still
10:50
Speaker 2: winning two one, two, three games a season. But it
10:54
Speaker 2: was a it was a it was a total different
10:56
Speaker 2: experience for everybody, for every single player that was on
11:01
Speaker 2: the field, from the crowd, from the talent that you
11:07
Speaker 2: that you're going against. And now Marshall fits into that
11:11
Speaker 2: profile now, like and think about what he did as
11:15
Speaker 2: far as like WVU is not playing those sort of
11:18
Speaker 2: teams now right, they don't play those teams. Hit on that.
11:21
Speaker 2: So I even think strategically being in West Virginia, realizing
11:25
Speaker 2: that that your premier program, your premier school, doesn't played Ohio,
11:28
Speaker 2: they don't play not to day, they don't play Virginia
11:30
Speaker 2: Tech anymore as much as they used to, and now
11:32
Speaker 2: you're playing them stategically, it was a good move as well.
11:35
Speaker 2: I didn't think about that, but yeah, that's a good
11:38
Speaker 2: point though.
11:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, And to add to his resume.
11:41
Speaker 5: You know, previously we were talking about the game the
11:43
Speaker 5: other night with the overtimes beating JMU. You know something
11:46
Speaker 5: else he can add to that resume that we're talking
11:49
Speaker 5: about is that that's one of the biggest deficits. I
11:52
Speaker 5: think it was like listed as the fifth largest deficit
11:55
Speaker 5: in the program's history to come. So you know that
11:57
Speaker 5: that was no small task. I mean I went to
12:00
Speaker 5: bed at halftime and they were getting dominated on both
12:02
Speaker 5: sides of the ball, and I think even we were
12:05
Speaker 5: texting each other and said, I was like, they look horrible,
12:07
Speaker 5: and I looked at my husband, and you know, I'm
12:09
Speaker 5: an old lady.
12:10
Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm going over this.
12:11
Speaker 5: And then the next day I wake up and I
12:13
Speaker 5: was like, that is an amazing feat. I mean I
12:15
Speaker 5: had flashbacks of remember the Miracle Immobile whenever whenever barbron left,
12:20
Speaker 5: which pulled that that that comeback. So I had kind
12:24
Speaker 5: of that image and that was that was the days
12:26
Speaker 5: of greatness for Marshall. So we're kind of equating huff
12:30
Speaker 5: with you know, coming back to bringing Marshall back to greatness.
12:33
Speaker 5: I mean in a different, you know scenario, because we've
12:36
Speaker 5: got in Il and the transfer portal.
12:39
Speaker 4: So it's I and.
12:40
Speaker 2: I'll make the case that he that that Marshall is
12:43
Speaker 2: not even hop nowhere even close to the top in
12:46
Speaker 2: io money, oh you know, and and so still being
12:51
Speaker 2: able to win games like that with the players who
12:58
Speaker 2: are not giving up the trust they trust in him.
13:01
Speaker 2: Can you imagine him at halftime and you're and you're losing.
13:05
Speaker 2: That's what I want to hear. I would Yeah, I
13:07
Speaker 2: would like to see the halftime speech because it's telling
13:10
Speaker 2: me it's gonna make me come out of that lot
13:12
Speaker 2: positive thinking, Oh that we all we gotta do is this,
13:15
Speaker 2: this and this and then we were on top of
13:17
Speaker 2: this we can win this game or to do Yeah,
13:20
Speaker 2: definitely definitely. So I mean, you know, so this ain't
13:23
Speaker 2: the only big coaching change we've got. This, This ain't.
13:26
Speaker 2: This ain't it's well, let's let's let's go there. Let's
13:32
Speaker 2: go there. So Neil Brown, Yeah, what what do we
13:38
Speaker 2: do we even ask the question where is his future?
13:43
Speaker 2: Or do we just say, you know, I think we're
13:46
Speaker 2: asking where our future is that's the question that we've
13:50
Speaker 2: been asking.
13:50
Speaker 4: He took a nice check with him.
13:52
Speaker 2: So he'll be okay, Yeah, he'll be okay, and it's.
13:58
Speaker 5: Very gracious in his pressers, and wouldn't you be with
14:02
Speaker 5: that amount of money in your possible.
14:04
Speaker 2: But see, I just think that he's I think that's
14:07
Speaker 2: who he is. I just I've always kind of liked
14:10
Speaker 2: him just every time I see an interview, there's something
14:16
Speaker 2: about him that that that I like, and and so
14:21
Speaker 2: you know him leaving. The interesting component to me is
14:25
Speaker 2: is like, Okay, is this a coaching issue or is
14:31
Speaker 2: this a player issue. I don't think it's either. I
14:35
Speaker 2: think it's a coaching issue to a degree, because, like
14:37
Speaker 2: I said, you gotta be a dynamic recruiter. But I think,
14:40
Speaker 2: unlike what you said Lisa about Marshall and being in
14:43
Speaker 2: a Sun Belt conference, how that's attractive. It's a good fit.
14:47
Speaker 2: It's just the WVU being in the Big twelve is
14:50
Speaker 2: a horrible fit. And like I said, I looked it
14:53
Speaker 2: up on the last five Big Tail Big Twelve championships.
14:58
Speaker 2: The majority of their roster is comprised of Texas football players.
15:03
Speaker 2: You're talking about probably seventy eighty percent of the roster,
15:08
Speaker 2: So I say it's about sixty to eighty percent of
15:10
Speaker 2: the roster is comprised of Texas football players. So you
15:13
Speaker 2: got Oklahoma nineteen, Oklahoma twenty, Baylor in twenty one, k
15:17
Speaker 2: State in twenty two, and Texas in twenty three. So
15:20
Speaker 2: their roster are comprised of Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and California. Currently,
15:27
Speaker 2: West Virginia has one Texas football player on their roster.
15:31
Speaker 2: So to me, unless you're gonna win recruiting battles in
15:35
Speaker 2: those four key state but you can't. But you're not
15:38
Speaker 2: at WVU. This is this is who WVU is in
15:42
Speaker 2: the Big twelve. And to me, unless you get out,
15:45
Speaker 2: like I said, you have to get a dynamic personality,
15:47
Speaker 2: a dynamic recruiter to come here and switch it up
15:51
Speaker 2: because you're just not gonna win that battle.
15:54
Speaker 4: So they need a name.
15:55
Speaker 2: They need they need a name one hundred percent. You're
15:59
Speaker 2: talking when when you when you start talking about the
16:02
Speaker 2: head coach, that's got to be a name. It's gotta be,
16:05
Speaker 2: it's gotta be. Okay, his point here, the names that
16:08
Speaker 2: they're they're tossing around, this is all speculation. But obviously
16:12
Speaker 2: Rich Rodriguez, he's current coach to Jacksonville State. Uh, they're
16:15
Speaker 2: talking about a Jamie U Chadwell out of Liberty. They're
16:20
Speaker 2: talking about obviously Jimbo Fisher, West Virginia guy they're talking about, uh,
16:26
Speaker 2: the the coach Barry Odman out of U n l V.
16:29
Speaker 2: He's done a good turn around there. They also mentioned
16:31
Speaker 2: coach Huff, which I don't maybe that wouldn't be a
16:34
Speaker 2: bad fit. But and there's also names like Bill Belichick.
16:37
Speaker 2: That's I think that's a joke. But they also mentioned
16:40
Speaker 2: like Nick Saban. So these are some of the names
16:42
Speaker 2: that's out there, but that Bill Clark, Ryan Silverfield, Tyson Headfield, Helton.
16:52
Speaker 2: So there's a lot of names that's out there. But regardless,
16:54
Speaker 2: you got to get somebody who's gonna be a dynamic
16:56
Speaker 2: cruiterer and recruit those states. Okay, So that's that's really
17:01
Speaker 2: where I think it all starts from. And it's gonna
17:07
Speaker 2: start from the recruiting and who is who is that recruiter?
17:11
Speaker 2: And who do you want knocking on your door? You
17:14
Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, because who knocks on your door?
17:18
Speaker 2: And or if I'm the recruiter and and the big
17:21
Speaker 2: name head coach is sitting there, sitting there, I'm coming
17:24
Speaker 2: in talking to you about you get a chance to
17:26
Speaker 2: play with this guy, you know, and this is the
17:29
Speaker 2: opportunity that a whole lot of people would like the hat. Now,
17:35
Speaker 2: So who passes that up? Though? Like if you if
17:37
Speaker 2: you get somebody like that, but who do you get?
17:40
Speaker 2: Is a question? That's that's the start.
17:42
Speaker 5: And that's exactly the question I was gonna pose to
17:45
Speaker 5: both of you guys, who who on that short list
17:47
Speaker 5: do you feel like would be the best fit in Morgantown.
17:50
Speaker 2: I mean, realistically, if I'm looking at those names and
17:54
Speaker 2: just kind of thinking outside the box, I mean, you
17:57
Speaker 2: are you need a prime time effect, like a prime
17:59
Speaker 2: dionce Is effects. So I think Jimbo Fisher I was
18:01
Speaker 2: gonna be That's where I was gonna go again. But
18:07
Speaker 2: coach coach Fisher got seventy five million reasons why he
18:10
Speaker 2: maybe wouldn't want that job. Yeah, because it's gonna it's
18:14
Speaker 2: gonna take it's gonna take some work. But flip that
18:17
Speaker 2: and say, Okay, I got that seventy five million, so
18:20
Speaker 2: I can afford to take that joint. Good point, I
18:23
Speaker 2: can take that job because I've already got the money
18:26
Speaker 2: that I'm looking for. I'm good for now.
18:28
Speaker 4: It's not about the money.
18:29
Speaker 2: It's not gonna be.
18:30
Speaker 5: It would be about just getting out of retirement. Maybe
18:32
Speaker 5: he's tired of it, maybe he just wants the challenge
18:35
Speaker 5: of coaching. And you know, the collegiate level. Again, he's
18:37
Speaker 5: a West Virginia got, He's a West Virginia guy.
18:39
Speaker 2: But but the biggest point that you made starting this
18:43
Speaker 2: conversation out is they've got to find a way to
18:47
Speaker 2: get to Texas. They gotta find a way. You you
18:50
Speaker 2: gotta get players out of those states in order to
18:54
Speaker 2: and and and m And that that to me that
18:59
Speaker 2: he wouldn't be new, wouldn't be new to Texas recruiting,
19:01
Speaker 2: because you gotta win some Texas you because again Texas,
19:04
Speaker 2: when you talk about Texas, California, and uh, Florida, that's
19:08
Speaker 2: the best high school football in the nation. And again,
19:10
Speaker 2: I understand we got the trans report and all that,
19:12
Speaker 2: but if you look at the premiere programs, a lot
19:14
Speaker 2: a large percent of their rosters are still made up
19:16
Speaker 2: of high school recruise. Guys are getting from high school
19:19
Speaker 2: the foundations, right, even if you look at Prime, I mean,
19:22
Speaker 2: you know his son and Travis sunder they were high
19:24
Speaker 2: school recruise that just followed him to California. But you
19:27
Speaker 2: gotta win that. But the one thing that I did
19:30
Speaker 2: hear Prime say this, and I'm pretty sure this is.
19:32
Speaker 2: This is what he said, that he's not recruiting. He's
19:36
Speaker 2: not really recruiting high school kids. Now he ain't because
19:39
Speaker 2: he don't got that. He's not. He's Prime, right. But
19:45
Speaker 2: I say, his two best players on that roster, he
19:48
Speaker 2: recruited him from high school. Well they you can make
19:51
Speaker 2: the case they came with him, but they came with him,
19:55
Speaker 2: but they were from high school. They weren't transfirst. It's
19:57
Speaker 2: an interesting it's interesting that he's the only coach I
20:01
Speaker 2: think that I've heard actually openly admit and say he
20:07
Speaker 2: ain't looking for a high school athlete. He's looking for
20:10
Speaker 2: somebody in the like somebody in the portal. You know.
20:13
Speaker 2: He ain't looking for he ain't got time to wait
20:16
Speaker 2: on the high school kid. I would make the case.
20:20
Speaker 2: I would have made the case that who he is
20:25
Speaker 2: and the staff that he has would be great to
20:28
Speaker 2: be able to mold in shape a kid, you know,
20:33
Speaker 2: But he's he's looking for that kid that's already got
20:36
Speaker 2: talent that we can give him some some some tips
20:40
Speaker 2: and he can go on and become become great. He
20:42
Speaker 2: ain't trying to mold them from from the very beginning, which.
20:46
Speaker 5: Which you know that there's I'm not sure about that philosophy,
20:49
Speaker 5: but he can afford to do that because of who
20:51
Speaker 5: he is and his name. But what it is is
20:53
Speaker 5: what's happening is the Marshals, the smaller schools are picking
20:56
Speaker 5: up those high school kids, they developed them, get them
20:59
Speaker 5: ready for you know, the college game scene, and then
21:03
Speaker 5: he goes in and swoops them out of those schools.
21:06
Speaker 5: So that's the hierarchy there of the transfer portal and
21:09
Speaker 5: the damage that it's doing to these smaller schools like
21:12
Speaker 5: a Marshall, even like a WU To be honest, how
21:15
Speaker 5: do you.
21:16
Speaker 2: And we see? I mean, and we'll see if it works, right,
21:20
Speaker 2: I mean, he had promised that with three winning seasons
21:22
Speaker 2: out of six so far a two or three, so
21:25
Speaker 2: we're gonna see if it works moving forward when he
21:27
Speaker 2: don't have shador Sandas.
21:28
Speaker 5: Do you think he's the only college coach with that
21:31
Speaker 5: philosophy out there?
21:32
Speaker 4: I mean, who do who else do you think is
21:34
Speaker 4: implementing that?
21:35
Speaker 2: A couple of them happened. But I mean if you
21:36
Speaker 2: look even at Gut like Debosweeney at Clemson, right, he's
21:40
Speaker 2: I mean he's not back to where Clemson was, but
21:43
Speaker 2: they're still in contention. Right, he's still winning games, it's
21:46
Speaker 2: still top twenty five, and he's recruiting out of high school.
21:48
Speaker 2: He's not doing all all this other stuff. So I
21:51
Speaker 2: think it can be done either way. It's just that
21:54
Speaker 2: I'm not sure if you can have a forty man
21:57
Speaker 2: roster turno every year, and now that's going to be
22:00
Speaker 2: and you can't and you can't lose your starting quarterback,
22:05
Speaker 2: you're starting less offensive tackle, and.
22:08
Speaker 5: But you could be aggressively aggressively recruiting that that portal. Yeah,
22:12
Speaker 5: and then you know, keep it, keep it stocked so
22:14
Speaker 5: that when those guys graduate, you know you got the
22:16
Speaker 5: next class coming up. Or it doesn't necessarily have to
22:19
Speaker 5: be you know, freshmen coming out of high school.
22:22
Speaker 4: You can start with sophomores and junior So I.
22:24
Speaker 2: Think you can get some plug, some plug and play guys.
22:26
Speaker 2: But like I said, I don't know if you could
22:28
Speaker 2: just do a whole roster tone over every other year. No,
22:31
Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't. But no sustainability, well I
22:34
Speaker 2: don't even I'll even make it a little bit smaller.
22:36
Speaker 2: You can't. You can't get you can't lose your your base,
22:41
Speaker 2: your foundation, which is those let's say five to six
22:45
Speaker 2: guys offensive defense that are major players. You can't lose
22:49
Speaker 2: to of them. You can't. You can't lose two of
22:52
Speaker 2: them to the portal and and go find them in
22:55
Speaker 2: high school. You you, you're gonna have to that. That
22:58
Speaker 2: will force you saying that that's gonna to repeat. You
23:02
Speaker 2: gotta find somebody who's already somewhat skilled and impressive compared
23:08
Speaker 2: to that guy that's in high school. I think you
23:10
Speaker 2: can find some plug and play guys. And I'm just
23:13
Speaker 2: not sure if you can do a whole roster turnover,
23:16
Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I'm not sure if you can say, Okay,
23:18
Speaker 2: I'm gonna replace my whole defense, my whole offense. I'm
23:20
Speaker 2: gonna make the case you can't replace your three or
23:23
Speaker 2: four top you have to replace your three or forty players.
23:28
Speaker 2: I think you can do that. I think you can
23:30
Speaker 2: find those guys.
23:31
Speaker 5: I think if you, if you, if you work the
23:32
Speaker 5: system the right way, you could and.
23:34
Speaker 2: If you're a prime you can do it. You can
23:37
Speaker 2: find those those two or three guys you but you
23:39
Speaker 2: have you are you are gonna have to be prime
23:43
Speaker 2: or at that level you just have money like Alabama.
23:49
Speaker 2: Let's take it quick break and it will be right back.

25:17
Speaker 2: these last few weekends are like the like the rival games,
25:22
Speaker 2: you know, the old uh South Charleston g H. You know,
25:28
Speaker 2: just like those those types of games are huge. Talk
25:35
Speaker 2: to me about what are you looking forward to in
25:40
Speaker 2: this week? What are you thinking, what do you like?
25:42
Speaker 4: What do you just this past weekend?
25:45
Speaker 2: What was past weekend? What you witnessed?
25:49
Speaker 5: I think I think there's two words, flag planting.
25:53
Speaker 4: Flag planting.
25:55
Speaker 5: I think that's what sparked a lot of the aggressiveness
25:59
Speaker 5: we saw on the field after play. I mean, we've
26:01
Speaker 5: always got the heated rivalries this time of year, like
26:05
Speaker 5: like you just said, and I feel like it's okay
26:08
Speaker 5: if a player, you know that, especially if you're the
26:11
Speaker 5: away team and you come out victorious, it's okay to
26:14
Speaker 5: take your school flag into a victory lap. I'm okay
26:16
Speaker 5: with that, you know, to the victor the spoils. But
26:19
Speaker 5: when you actively take your school flag into the middle
26:22
Speaker 5: of these players. And the one team is licking their
26:26
Speaker 5: wounds from this, this this horrible loss to their rival,
26:30
Speaker 5: and you're taking your flag and basically planting it under
26:33
Speaker 5: their nose, right in front of their face.
26:36
Speaker 4: There's going to be a problem. And that's what we
26:38
Speaker 4: saw this past weekend. There were problems.
26:40
Speaker 2: Okay, so let me let me let me just say
26:42
Speaker 2: this about about taking your flag and taking it out
26:47
Speaker 2: on the field. Okay, Like I've tried to figure out
26:52
Speaker 2: how frustrated that would be to me, you know, like
26:56
Speaker 2: you just want and you're out middle field, got your
27:01
Speaker 2: flag up, and let's just say you're at You're at
27:05
Speaker 2: You're at at the Biking field right like you're at
27:08
Speaker 2: It's a home game for the Vikings, and you got
27:11
Speaker 2: a Packer flag in the middle of the field.
27:13
Speaker 4: So let's bring the Packers and say that. Okay.
27:16
Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm trying to figure out, like how
27:22
Speaker 2: frustrated that would make me, because I would make the
27:25
Speaker 2: case if the game wasn't close, you know, right down
27:30
Speaker 2: to the end. Am I that upset? But but I
27:33
Speaker 2: think it's different in that when you talk about like
27:35
Speaker 2: these college football rivalries right. So it happened in like
27:38
Speaker 2: the Michigan Ohio State game, and everybody knows what that is.
27:42
Speaker 2: They were like what number one or two going in
27:45
Speaker 2: So they take this loss, so obviously that's gonna either
27:47
Speaker 2: that can either knock them out of the playoffs or
27:50
Speaker 2: that kid, you know, change their seating. Right. So it's
27:53
Speaker 2: other implications, but just outside of the ribbaly, but personally
27:57
Speaker 2: I love it.
28:00
Speaker 4: Look, I think you should.
28:02
Speaker 2: I think it should happen, like you know, like you think.
28:05
Speaker 4: The flag planting the flag.
28:07
Speaker 2: It's okay, let's do it because this is the last
28:10
Speaker 2: thing that we have in college football. We don't have
28:13
Speaker 2: anything else.
28:14
Speaker 4: We's okay, sportsmanship, great, do.
28:16
Speaker 2: It because what I'm saying is because it's going to
28:20
Speaker 2: keep the robberies going. Because what I'm saying is this,
28:24
Speaker 2: My point is this, this is the last This is
28:27
Speaker 2: kind of like the last thing we have in college football.
28:29
Speaker 2: Because we talked about a nauseum transfer reporter n I L.
28:33
Speaker 2: N I L is changing it strictly to a business.
28:35
Speaker 2: I think in some time here in the new future,
28:37
Speaker 2: they're gonna get rid of requirements for g PA. You
28:40
Speaker 2: might not even have to go to school anymore. You
28:42
Speaker 2: just might have be an employee of the super point, right,
28:44
Speaker 2: and and again with the transfer reporter, you lose the
28:48
Speaker 2: continuity of the players. So it's not like back in
28:51
Speaker 2: the day where you know, some super fan could go
28:53
Speaker 2: through the whole you know, sixty man roster at w
28:56
Speaker 2: tell you everybody about everything where they came from, every
28:59
Speaker 2: play may Now it's so much movement. I just saw
29:02
Speaker 2: a kid now he's going to his third school, right,
29:05
Speaker 2: So we lost the continuity, we lost kind of the
29:07
Speaker 2: amateurism that was college football. Robbery's is all we got left.
29:12
Speaker 2: This is literally all we got left, and with conferences
29:15
Speaker 2: changing some of it even than the rivals till I
29:17
Speaker 2: think like I would, and Iwoa State they don't even
29:20
Speaker 2: play any They didn't play for the first time of
29:21
Speaker 2: like one hundred and twenty years. So this is what
29:24
Speaker 2: we have left. So plaque fans get in fights, make
29:28
Speaker 2: it work all right?
29:29
Speaker 4: Now, Now, Okay, ain't nobody.
29:33
Speaker 2: Ain't nobody getting hurt, got a bunch of equipment on.
29:36
Speaker 2: There's the reality too, that it's hard to have a
29:40
Speaker 2: fight and hurt. You got knowing this is the likely
29:43
Speaker 2: the guy who.
29:45
Speaker 5: Now whether this is true or not, And I did
29:47
Speaker 5: read this somewhere, and of course if it's on the internet,
29:48
Speaker 5: it's got to be true. But that during the Ohio
29:52
Speaker 5: State Michigan melee that there was like a guard trying
29:55
Speaker 5: to break up the players that got hurt. So see
29:58
Speaker 5: you got that side of it too.
29:59
Speaker 2: That's true. But the way but but you have to
30:04
Speaker 2: you it has to break it up. If head coach
30:08
Speaker 2: security guard and I got a six six but that job,
30:14
Speaker 2: y'all go get it out. Y'all all wait to whoever
30:16
Speaker 2: we win and not just take Come on, bro, he
30:18
Speaker 2: had enough. I ain't getting in between y'all up. Come on, man,
30:24
Speaker 2: I'm shot that that that that you you would take
30:28
Speaker 2: that position. This is what we got left, bro. We
30:31
Speaker 2: don't got nothing left, but we do.
30:33
Speaker 4: I mean, it's like I said, I mean, isn't it
30:35
Speaker 4: enough that you won.
30:36
Speaker 5: The game and you and you do like your little
30:38
Speaker 5: rub the flag and then you know, do the do
30:40
Speaker 5: the little run.
30:41
Speaker 4: Around the field, plant the planet, plant the fla like
30:46
Speaker 4: for example, oh my goodness.
30:48
Speaker 2: Like w V. You didn't even play pit this weekend.
30:51
Speaker 2: Marshall didn't play Ohio for man, Miami of Ohio. We've
30:54
Speaker 2: lost it. We don't have it. No more.
30:57
Speaker 4: We don't even have the rob played it at the minute. Yeah,
31:01
Speaker 4: but robbery, yeah, yeah, you're right, you're no. They forty scheduling.
31:05
Speaker 2: Come on, that's one of the greatest robberies in college football.
31:08
Speaker 2: Now play on robbery, don't play Virginia Tech no more.
31:10
Speaker 4: But they didn't plant the flag. Of course they won
31:12
Speaker 4: at home. I think this is more of an issue
31:14
Speaker 4: when you went away.
31:15
Speaker 2: You went away. Yeah, it's the visiting team that's winning.
31:18
Speaker 2: Plant that who's planning the flag at the fifty yard line?
31:22
Speaker 2: The coaches, you gotta take it.
31:23
Speaker 4: The coaches, they don't like it, even the head coaches.
31:26
Speaker 2: Let me ask this before you, before you finished that,
31:30
Speaker 2: Before you finished that, I'm trying to figure out, how
31:33
Speaker 2: have I How am I as the player, and let's
31:35
Speaker 2: say you're the head coach, right or you're a coach
31:38
Speaker 2: on the sideline, how do I get out to the
31:42
Speaker 2: fifty yard line to plant that flag without you?
31:46
Speaker 4: You run fast without you?
31:48
Speaker 2: I mean, come on, but you got.
31:51
Speaker 5: He just ran in the middle. I mean he didn't
31:54
Speaker 5: even he didn't stop once he got in the middle.
31:56
Speaker 5: He tried to plant that flag, and those Buckeye players
31:58
Speaker 5: were all over it.
31:59
Speaker 2: They Okay, okay, So is that is that a coach?
32:03
Speaker 2: Is that something? As a head coach, I have to
32:06
Speaker 2: already start talking about baby, for sure. You got to
32:09
Speaker 2: talk about it to make sure that it never happens.
32:13
Speaker 2: You gotta talk about it, man, we gotta. I don't know.
32:15
Speaker 2: I like it, man, Like I said, it's just like
32:18
Speaker 2: I said the robberies that I like that intensity of
32:21
Speaker 2: that because it happened in But uh was it the
32:24
Speaker 2: Notre Dame USC game?
32:26
Speaker 5: Uh?
32:26
Speaker 4: It was Okay, it was definitely definitely a Higo State Michigan.
32:29
Speaker 4: Then it was Florida.
32:30
Speaker 2: State, Florida State, Floria. That's what the other game.
32:33
Speaker 5: In state, n C State and U n C and
32:36
Speaker 5: then Arizona State and Arizona which are all four big right.
32:39
Speaker 5: But that's crazy that you had four incidents in one
32:42
Speaker 5: weekend and there were big fights.
32:44
Speaker 2: Do we need it the college? We need it because
32:47
Speaker 2: look what we're we're the only thing we've talked about.
32:50
Speaker 2: We barely talked. People barely don't talk about the play
32:52
Speaker 2: of college football. Now. All they talk about is the
32:55
Speaker 2: n i L transferporter What who should get this award?
32:58
Speaker 2: Who's not getting this award? We don't talk about the play,
33:01
Speaker 2: but you can, but you can you can't resort to
33:05
Speaker 2: violence the fight you But what I am saying is
33:11
Speaker 2: I'm down with some planners, plan.
33:13
Speaker 4: And you know what's gonna happen if you do that?
33:14
Speaker 2: Though? Would you know?
33:15
Speaker 4: You know what the consequence.
33:17
Speaker 2: As a coach, you got to tell your players. Look, man,
33:19
Speaker 2: if we go out here and blow this, they're gonna
33:20
Speaker 2: plant that flag. And they know y'all can do, y'all's
33:22
Speaker 2: got to.
33:22
Speaker 4: Well, maybe that just to be established.
33:24
Speaker 2: I wouldn't make the case. I'm to your point. That
33:28
Speaker 2: is a valid that is part of the home coaches,
33:33
Speaker 2: the home head coaches conversation. Guys, I'm telling you you
33:38
Speaker 2: better be prepared if you if you do not win
33:40
Speaker 2: this game, that that team across the field is gonna
33:45
Speaker 2: come out and going to plan a flag.
33:46
Speaker 4: And here's another point to make.
33:48
Speaker 5: I think the conferences probably are gonna have to kind
33:50
Speaker 5: of step in and make rules about this, because obviously
33:54
Speaker 5: I think the Big Ten find both Michigan and.
33:56
Speaker 4: Ohio State for their behavior.
33:57
Speaker 5: Both were fine, like I think one hundred thousand dollars,
33:59
Speaker 5: which is nothing for the big schools, but still they
34:02
Speaker 5: were making a statement saying we're not going to tolerate this.
34:05
Speaker 2: Because but I think you gotta have some fun. I mean,
34:08
Speaker 2: that's not that is not it's fun to the fans.
34:11
Speaker 2: It's fun to the fans to see that. Again, we
34:13
Speaker 2: don't want to see melees. We don't want to see
34:14
Speaker 2: people hurt. Obviously, we don't know what's gonna happen. What
34:17
Speaker 2: what what this to me? This is what this can cause,
34:20
Speaker 2: This can cause you in the stands, me and the
34:23
Speaker 2: stands at least in the stands and wherever we wherever
34:26
Speaker 2: we support whichever one of us lose and whichever because
34:33
Speaker 2: I'm not gonna like I want you like putting the
34:35
Speaker 2: flag up in my face, because because y'all want because
34:37
Speaker 2: so now you got a bleacher because now you've got
34:39
Speaker 2: a bleacher issue. But I mean, even if it's not
34:42
Speaker 2: a flag, what they'll do is, oh, you can't bring flags, Okay,
34:45
Speaker 2: So they'll go to the other team's logo and they'll
34:48
Speaker 2: like stomp their feed or rub their feet on the logo.
34:50
Speaker 4: Or take that more than But I think we.
34:53
Speaker 2: Gotta just we gotta falster these rivalcy. Obviously, again, you
34:56
Speaker 2: don't want something, but we got to do something. But
34:58
Speaker 2: bad sportsmanship is no a way to do it. It's fun,
35:01
Speaker 2: though it's not necessarily always. This is fun. It's fun.
35:08
Speaker 2: It's fun. I would never expect you to be on
35:12
Speaker 2: this side, because I maybe wouldn't. But this is what
35:16
Speaker 2: we have left from college football. You realize this is it.
35:20
Speaker 2: We took around to the bowl games don't mean anything anymore,
35:24
Speaker 2: right because we got the playoffs. We got the playoffs.
35:27
Speaker 2: So now even if you didn't, even if you weren't
35:29
Speaker 2: in the National Championship prior to this and you were
35:31
Speaker 2: in a bowl game, your bowl game still means something.
35:34
Speaker 2: Now you got players if they're not in the playoffs,
35:36
Speaker 2: and even if they got a low seed in the playoffs,
35:38
Speaker 2: they're just saying, I do the ball game. I'll just
35:40
Speaker 2: get ready for the draft, or get ready for next season,
35:42
Speaker 2: or or get ready to transfer. We got coaches again,
35:45
Speaker 2: it's happened to getting interviewed in the middle of the season.
35:48
Speaker 2: You got a championship game coming on, and now you
35:51
Speaker 2: job speculation and all that, which is problematic. So everything
35:54
Speaker 2: about the college football that we love is turned into
35:58
Speaker 2: almost it. Which is it. It's cool to watch, it's
36:01
Speaker 2: cool to watch. The NFL's fun. It's great, but it
36:03
Speaker 2: didn't playoff time. When college football, the difference was it
36:07
Speaker 2: was good from day one all the way through every
36:09
Speaker 2: game it was it was intense. So so I just think,
36:13
Speaker 2: for in some degree, this is what we have left,
36:16
Speaker 2: this is what we're relegated to.
36:18
Speaker 5: Like I said, I think the victory lapse. I think
36:21
Speaker 5: the flag planning probably takes it a step too far.
36:23
Speaker 2: Take it, take that step.
36:28
Speaker 4: I said what I said.
36:31
Speaker 2: I just I don't see you. I don't see you
36:33
Speaker 2: in that in that in that space the fan though,
36:36
Speaker 2: Like I'm a I'm a college football fan. I love
36:38
Speaker 2: college football, and it's just it's just different now. It's
36:41
Speaker 2: just not the same man. Like I said, it's just
36:44
Speaker 2: I mean even even to the degree now where like
36:46
Speaker 2: like number one, number two seed, top seeds losing maybe
36:49
Speaker 2: two three games, right, it's just not the same. It's
36:52
Speaker 2: not the college football that we grew up on. I
36:54
Speaker 2: know I sound old at this point, but it's just
36:56
Speaker 2: the intensity I of lack it, you know, until we
36:59
Speaker 2: get it's going to be until we get to you know,
37:02
Speaker 2: championships time in the season, you know, I don't know.
37:07
Speaker 5: Yeah, you're right, I mean I think the intensity that
37:09
Speaker 5: the lack of it now you can attribute that to
37:13
Speaker 5: the nil I mean, you've only got so many teams
37:16
Speaker 5: that have so much money and they're up here competing
37:18
Speaker 5: for national championships every single year, and the rest of
37:20
Speaker 5: us are just you know, we're just going out there
37:22
Speaker 5: trying to gather the scraps up that are left over.
37:26
Speaker 5: You know, that's what's happened to college football. Yeah, because
37:28
Speaker 5: ore so than anything else.
37:30
Speaker 2: And if you look at like Marshall, when we talked
37:31
Speaker 2: about Marshall earlier, Marshall at once when they had Moss
37:34
Speaker 2: and Penning Tin and left which it were a top
37:36
Speaker 2: ten that.
37:36
Speaker 4: Could never happen again, It couldn't happen today.
37:38
Speaker 2: Think about Marshall like they were a top ten team
37:43
Speaker 2: if they were like if it was playoffs, Marshall would
37:46
Speaker 2: be in the playoffs. Yes, yes, And then now that
37:50
Speaker 2: may happen for one season, but what's going to happen
37:52
Speaker 2: You got Randy mosson next season, He's gone to not
37:55
Speaker 2: dang Florida State somewhere to get a bitch check. There's
37:58
Speaker 2: no question that marsh history, it's positive history, could have
38:03
Speaker 2: happened if you had in that in I L it
38:06
Speaker 2: couldn't have That's what I'm saying, not just Marshall, Boise State,
38:10
Speaker 2: all the schools who were who would Underdogs's imagine Alabama
38:16
Speaker 2: being what it was and having the opportunity to bring
38:20
Speaker 2: in a Randy Moss, you know what I'm saying, And
38:23
Speaker 2: they wouldn't and they would at yeah, and it would
38:25
Speaker 2: it would be maybe hard for him to stay because
38:28
Speaker 2: he just got all them zeros right in front of you,
38:30
Speaker 2: your sophomore in college. So it's like when I think
38:33
Speaker 2: of college football, like I think of those times, and
38:36
Speaker 2: I in one of the like I said, the relic
38:38
Speaker 2: of that time now is the bribery games and and again,
38:43
Speaker 2: and I think we're going to get to a point
38:45
Speaker 2: now again you U c L a u USC. They're
38:48
Speaker 2: in two different they're in two different conferences that the
38:54
Speaker 2: USC is playing in the Big ten. Come on, I don't.
38:58
Speaker 2: I don't know.
38:58
Speaker 4: West Virginia's in the Big twelve. That's still you know.
39:02
Speaker 2: I don't. Again, I don't know why it's not, you know,
39:07
Speaker 2: geographically set up. And I know you can't always do
39:10
Speaker 2: that because you know, you got it. You got a
39:13
Speaker 2: major D one here and a D two over here.
39:17
Speaker 2: But I just don't. I just don't get the the
39:23
Speaker 2: reality of who everybody who, everybody's playing is all over
39:28
Speaker 2: the country. Yeah, you know, and why can't you like
39:33
Speaker 2: by by size, you know, by level, by athletic and
39:38
Speaker 2: put all those groups in a general area playing a
39:42
Speaker 2: general That's what it was prior to. And I on
39:45
Speaker 2: the money and TV deals and endorsements and this and
39:48
Speaker 2: this and that. So now it just becomes where is
39:50
Speaker 2: the most Where the situation has replied to geography.
39:54
Speaker 4: I mean, look at the SEC.
39:55
Speaker 5: Look what they've done, how they've expanded and taken teams
39:57
Speaker 5: from Texas.
39:58
Speaker 4: A and M. I mean that that doesn't mean how is.
40:02
Speaker 2: There is there a loyalty or let me rephrase it.
40:07
Speaker 2: Can a player have loyalty to a school that he's
40:11
Speaker 2: been really good at. Let's just use the Randy Moss
40:14
Speaker 2: at Marshall and it's his second year and everybody's coming
40:19
Speaker 2: trying to get him. Is there a possibility of having
40:24
Speaker 2: enough loyalty to say now I'm I'm gonna finish out
40:28
Speaker 2: my career here is do we have? Is there is
40:31
Speaker 2: there a parent or is there an athlete and or
40:35
Speaker 2: both willing to say I'm gonna stay. I know where
40:39
Speaker 2: we may only because if you're making if they're gonna
40:41
Speaker 2: offer you money, you're probably making some money where you are,
40:45
Speaker 2: but maybe not as much as they're offering you. Are
40:48
Speaker 2: you willing? Is there is there players out there that
40:51
Speaker 2: would be and parents willing to stay put in spite
40:55
Speaker 2: of the money.
40:55
Speaker 4: What do you think?
40:57
Speaker 2: I think it depends on your your family situation. Right
41:00
Speaker 2: if you look at arch your maneing in Texas currently
41:04
Speaker 2: he doesn't Money's not an issue by him and his family,
41:08
Speaker 2: so he can afford to go there be a backup
41:10
Speaker 2: when he could probably go to any other school in
41:12
Speaker 2: the country and be a starting quarterback from day one.
41:16
Speaker 2: So it depends on your family set up. So if
41:19
Speaker 2: you are Randy Mossey, maybe you don't have the means
41:21
Speaker 2: at that time and Marshall's paying you twenty thirty grand
41:25
Speaker 2: but didn't know the Dame Florida State, Alabama, Ohio steps
41:29
Speaker 2: and say hey, look we're going to give you a
41:30
Speaker 2: half a million dollars. What you gonna do?
41:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's a good point.
41:35
Speaker 5: I also think it depends on a personal connection with
41:38
Speaker 5: the school, Like if you've had family go to school there,
41:42
Speaker 5: you know if you're from that area, even if you're
41:44
Speaker 5: from that actual state that's recruited you.
41:46
Speaker 4: I think that matters too.
41:48
Speaker 2: I'm questionable because I don't know if we get that
41:55
Speaker 2: kind of loyalty to a school now. I like, I
42:00
Speaker 2: never thought about going anywhere, leaving Marshall in spite of losing,
42:04
Speaker 2: Like it never it never donned the means that could
42:07
Speaker 2: be different if it was money and being a kid
42:09
Speaker 2: and not, but just focusing on not at a program
42:15
Speaker 2: that's winning that people are talking about, it's always negative.
42:18
Speaker 2: I never thought about leaving, not one time, and I don't.
42:22
Speaker 2: And I know it bothered a lot of guys who
42:24
Speaker 2: came from major Division ones and stuff that were you know,
42:28
Speaker 2: didn't lose a game. There was guys who hadn't lost
42:30
Speaker 2: a game their entire high school career and they're barely winning.
42:36
Speaker 2: They couldn't. I mean, it was hard for them to
42:37
Speaker 2: handle it, right.
42:40
Speaker 5: I mean, I think I think whenever we were growing up,
42:44
Speaker 5: it was a whole different recruiting area era, and so
42:48
Speaker 5: you know, we didn't have the social media. We didn't
42:51
Speaker 5: have like you would have. Scouts actually have to come
42:53
Speaker 5: in person and watch you play high school ball or
42:57
Speaker 5: whatever level you were on it for them to just
43:00
Speaker 5: whether or not they would offer a scholarship these days,
43:02
Speaker 5: I mean, it's not that way. They've got social media,
43:04
Speaker 5: they've got videos they can watch, they there's just so
43:07
Speaker 5: many other aspects to bringing kids out of their home
43:12
Speaker 5: state to a different area in the nation and another school,
43:15
Speaker 5: don't you think.
43:16
Speaker 2: I'm definitely. And Plus it's like if I'm on social media,
43:19
Speaker 2: if I'm down here at Marshall WVT, I'm balling out.
43:22
Speaker 2: I'm all American, And like I said, I'm getting paid
43:24
Speaker 2: twenty thirty maybe forty fifty thousand dollars a year, and
43:27
Speaker 2: I'm looking on social media and I got this guy
43:29
Speaker 2: in Ohio, Alabama or USC and he barely got half
43:33
Speaker 2: my status. He's not doesn't have the accolades I got,
43:35
Speaker 2: and he's driving a brand new let's just BMW gold chains,
43:39
Speaker 2: living it up in the city. And I'm like, and
43:42
Speaker 2: I'm sitting here barely paying rent and I'm better than
43:45
Speaker 2: this guy, and I'm getting and then I turn around
43:48
Speaker 2: and get offered similar more. It's hard to sort of
43:51
Speaker 2: manage that. So it's not so again, It's just we've
43:54
Speaker 2: turned college football into a business, and this is the result.
43:57
Speaker 2: This is the result you're going where the best office is.
44:00
Speaker 2: And again, I think you have some guys going to
44:02
Speaker 2: be Och loyal who want to be Saturday Morning heroes,
44:05
Speaker 2: who have a lineage to the school that they're at,
44:08
Speaker 2: who you know, maybe have a you know, a Lloyds
44:12
Speaker 2: to the coaching staff. I think those things exist. But
44:16
Speaker 2: you know there's another side to that as well. I
44:20
Speaker 2: just I don't know, it just seems.
44:22
Speaker 5: I mean, in your in your case, Carl, let's let's
44:24
Speaker 5: just put this out there. If at that time and
44:26
Speaker 5: I all existed and you had a different school other
44:30
Speaker 5: than Marshall offering you money or you know, gifts to
44:34
Speaker 5: come play for them, do you think that could have
44:35
Speaker 5: changed your mindset about going to Marshall.
44:39
Speaker 2: It might have changed mind It might not have changed
44:41
Speaker 2: my dad's, but I probably would have been interested in
44:47
Speaker 2: pursuing it seeing what it is now. My dad was
44:50
Speaker 2: probably not going to You know, my dad was that
44:54
Speaker 2: kind of you know, when you when you when you
44:56
Speaker 2: say you're going somewhere, you're going to be somewhere, You're
44:59
Speaker 2: you're there, right, So he was. That's until he get
45:01
Speaker 2: that one hundred thousand dollars check. Well, yeah, I'm saying
45:05
Speaker 2: that looking back and knowing who he was. But again,
45:11
Speaker 2: like you said, one hundred thousand dollars changes that changed
45:15
Speaker 2: a lot of That changed a lot of things because
45:17
Speaker 2: he might have been like, boy, you better go get
45:19
Speaker 2: that money. That now you don't know what yeah. So
45:25
Speaker 2: and again, man, I get it, I get it, But
45:29
Speaker 2: I just don't think that you don't like you. But
45:31
Speaker 2: I say this, like I told you earlier, this is
45:33
Speaker 2: the result of college football coaches. Coaches did this, and
45:37
Speaker 2: I'm putting that up and nobody talks about this because
45:40
Speaker 2: coaches back in the day they had their endorsement deals.
45:43
Speaker 2: They didn't share that money. I mean some of them.
45:46
Speaker 2: I'm sure they funded programs and did things probably underneath
45:49
Speaker 2: the table, but players couldn't cash in on that is
45:52
Speaker 2: I guess that's a better way to stay. State coaches,
45:55
Speaker 2: just like rich Rod will do leave before the bowl game.
45:58
Speaker 2: So you worked this season, you did, did all the stuff,
46:00
Speaker 2: you preached, all this, and now we're at the bowl game.
46:03
Speaker 2: Now we at the end of the season. You getting interviewed.
46:05
Speaker 2: The season ain't even over. So I think structurally this
46:09
Speaker 2: is what college football coaches, presidents and everything did. So
46:12
Speaker 2: you cannot blame the players. For now it's their turn
46:15
Speaker 2: to do it. And until we get sort of auto
46:18
Speaker 2: correct the ship where everybody's playing the game fair, this
46:22
Speaker 2: is the result. By I think we can go back
46:24
Speaker 2: to a dry I think we'll go back to a again.
46:28
Speaker 4: It's gonna be regulated.
46:30
Speaker 2: I say that it's gonna be regulated. But college football coaches,
46:34
Speaker 2: as much as they preach and do all this stuff,
46:36
Speaker 2: they gotta take some accountability for this. Okay, So let
46:40
Speaker 2: me just say this first. Normally, when we get ready
46:44
Speaker 2: to come on the show and we're discussing things that
46:49
Speaker 2: we're gonna talk about, I don't know if I've ever
46:54
Speaker 2: necessarily heard you come out.
46:57
Speaker 4: That hard on, full of surprise.
47:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, like you're you're like, you're straight up blaming the
47:06
Speaker 2: coach you got to and nobody talks about it. Nobody
47:10
Speaker 2: talks about how we got here. And and you know
47:13
Speaker 2: what's funny, I don't even know if they thought they
47:16
Speaker 2: they've had it.
47:16
Speaker 4: I can't argue with it.
47:17
Speaker 2: I can't either.
47:18
Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know if something I've never but
47:22
Speaker 5: he's right.
47:23
Speaker 2: Think about what would happened at prep conferences to say,
47:26
Speaker 2: five ten years ago you had a coach he ha
47:28
Speaker 2: his Gatorade or whatever drink. He's endorsement Pam right there,
47:32
Speaker 2: he has he getting he's getting paid or getting kickbacks
47:35
Speaker 2: from the Appareled, Nike, Deedal Conference, whatever they do. He's
47:39
Speaker 2: getting that. He's getting that commercials, he's getting that all
47:42
Speaker 2: of us coming to him or going to the school.
47:45
Speaker 2: And then the players will send back subject like they're
47:47
Speaker 2: they're not crazy. They're in college. They're taking advertisement. So
47:50
Speaker 2: they're seeing all this happening right before their eyes. They
47:53
Speaker 2: can't cash in on it. Remember coach K's basketball on
47:56
Speaker 2: the second. He's getting paid for that, not.
47:58
Speaker 5: The players, but at that time, planning that you are
48:01
Speaker 5: getting paid with a college education, and that is not
48:04
Speaker 5: that is not a value anymore.
48:06
Speaker 4: What we've learned players.
48:07
Speaker 2: It ain't been a value in a while. Right, well,
48:10
Speaker 2: let me say that, I'll take that back. Our education
48:13
Speaker 2: is still valuable. It's just not enough. It's just it's because,
48:18
Speaker 2: like I said, it's more money, it's more things out there.
48:21
Speaker 4: If it was so valuable, then most of.
48:23
Speaker 5: Those players wouldn't leave for the draft. I mean a
48:26
Speaker 5: lot of them that's not good, that are being paid.
48:28
Speaker 4: They leave.
48:29
Speaker 2: But that's a small it's not even costing. It's not
48:33
Speaker 2: even costing the school money for that athlete to to
48:37
Speaker 2: go sit in a class, whether there's fifty kids in
48:41
Speaker 2: and that he makes fifty one or she makes fifty one,
48:44
Speaker 2: But it's no more. It's not making anymore or any
48:47
Speaker 2: less money for the school.
48:48
Speaker 5: The school is benefiting for sure, But I'm saying at
48:51
Speaker 5: one time it was a value for you to get
48:54
Speaker 5: a scholarship because the main goal was for you to
48:57
Speaker 5: go get a college education for free, free ride, I said,
49:01
Speaker 5: But I said, this.
49:02
Speaker 2: Is still the value. And and also to the to
49:04
Speaker 2: the colleges, they're benefiting not only from that player doing
49:08
Speaker 2: what they're doing on the field or court, but they're
49:09
Speaker 2: also benefiting because in most colleges, the athletic department has
49:13
Speaker 2: the highest retention rate, they have the highest GPAs, they
49:17
Speaker 2: have the best students. Because again our basketball those kids
49:20
Speaker 2: are graduating, the softball players, the tennis players, they're graduating.
49:23
Speaker 2: They're going to be the ones to go and do
49:25
Speaker 2: things and get back to the school in different things
49:27
Speaker 2: of that nature. So it's a huge benefit for the
49:30
Speaker 2: school to have an athletic department that's thriving. And I've
49:35
Speaker 2: said this before, like when you start talking about the
49:38
Speaker 2: athlete and athlete, the student athlete one that's not even
49:42
Speaker 2: a term anymore. Yeah, I hand nobody said that. Well,
49:45
Speaker 2: you don't even hear student athlete anymore. And then the
49:50
Speaker 2: other the other situation is you you rarely hear of
49:53
Speaker 2: a of a student athlete flunking out or or strugg
50:00
Speaker 2: and struggling with its academics. They get help, you know,
50:03
Speaker 2: and come on like, you can't tell me of every
50:08
Speaker 2: athlete male and female that come into the programs of
50:13
Speaker 2: the entire university that one of those kids. And not
50:16
Speaker 2: like on edge. But I'll say this though, I would
50:19
Speaker 2: say academically now, because you have access to the phone,
50:25
Speaker 2: and you have access to AI, chat, GPD, grammarly, there's
50:29
Speaker 2: a lot more tools even outside of you getting tutored
50:32
Speaker 2: or cheatdor anything like that. It's just a lot more
50:34
Speaker 2: tools that you Plus you're doing classes online.
50:36
Speaker 4: That's what I was going to say.
50:38
Speaker 5: I mean, even like the kids that are attending school
50:41
Speaker 5: in person, a lot of their classes they can do
50:43
Speaker 5: them from their you can look it up and you're right.
50:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, So if you're feeling now you want to feel,
50:50
Speaker 2: but I'm just thinking you when you look back you had,
50:55
Speaker 2: you had those kinds of issues for players. That's you know,
51:00
Speaker 2: and and today you don't. That's not even that's a
51:04
Speaker 2: good point because I ain't heard that. No, I mean.
51:10
Speaker 4: You never hear it now.
51:12
Speaker 2: I mean I was dealing with that a state, Yeah
51:14
Speaker 2: for sure, you know, and you don't even you don't
51:17
Speaker 2: hear anywhere, like you don't hear of a kid flunking
51:20
Speaker 2: out or that's a good point. Good point. So to me,
51:24
Speaker 2: what am I Where am I putting that? Who's responsible
51:28
Speaker 2: for that? I think it's athletics. I think athletics. I
51:32
Speaker 2: think athletics because athletics runs the school. It does because
51:37
Speaker 2: it's the money maker. It's putting you on national TV
51:40
Speaker 2: money and that the money maker. Yeah. But I say,
51:44
Speaker 2: even to the like the Olympic sports, as I mentioned,
51:46
Speaker 2: those kids are going to get extremely high GPAs they're
51:50
Speaker 2: graduating school. They're they're they're on time because they actually
51:53
Speaker 2: have somebody helping them like guide them through far as
51:56
Speaker 2: getting their classes set up, so they're graduating on time.
51:59
Speaker 2: So to the school, like I said, having a strong
52:02
Speaker 2: athletic department is a total benefit. I mean, as they
52:05
Speaker 2: ask you, you see, that's why they're adding sports every
52:07
Speaker 2: year because these are the kids that's actually going to college,
52:10
Speaker 2: going to participate on campus. They're guys gonna be there
52:12
Speaker 2: on campus, you know. And and and there's a reason
52:15
Speaker 2: there's a reason why that a lot of these kids
52:19
Speaker 2: are making it is is because there's there's a ton
52:22
Speaker 2: of money being put into the help that they're going
52:26
Speaker 2: to get. You know, you're not gonna let that athlete that's.
52:31
Speaker 4: Not going to be academically.
52:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And and I think that's I think that's
52:40
Speaker 2: that's an interesting piece there on an So I had something,
52:46
Speaker 2: let me, let me, let me, let me find it.
52:48
Speaker 2: Oh so the issue the Heisman Trophy, the trophy, I
52:58
Speaker 2: don't wrap that thing up right now? Able to Colorado?
53:02
Speaker 2: Why why not? But for the person who who doesn't think,
53:10
Speaker 2: I don't know how to.
53:11
Speaker 4: Think, there are few and far between.
53:12
Speaker 5: I think every week that that that that little.
53:16
Speaker 4: Bass is shrinking.
53:17
Speaker 5: I mean, I really feel like the more he's performing
53:19
Speaker 5: on the field, the more people see.
53:21
Speaker 2: He's like the top receiver in the nation. Yeah, top
53:24
Speaker 2: dB in the nation. He got the stats to back.
53:26
Speaker 4: Both of us, right right right?
53:27
Speaker 2: How do yeah? How you can't be mad at him?
53:30
Speaker 4: Like you don't think anybody is now, I don't know.
53:33
Speaker 2: If you don't like if you don't like Prime, he
53:36
Speaker 2: might be taking that on you.
53:38
Speaker 5: You talked about that, like being intimidated by him or
53:42
Speaker 5: just not flat flat out just not liking him. Yeah,
53:45
Speaker 5: that could affect the outcome of that.
53:47
Speaker 2: But I just to your point, Lisa, it's just you
53:50
Speaker 2: can't even deny it. No, I'm with you. I'm with
53:54
Speaker 2: you on that because I mean, I don't let's even
53:58
Speaker 2: go back to Prompt. As great as he was, I
54:02
Speaker 2: don't know, I don't remember him being both sides of
54:07
Speaker 2: the ball, dominating both sides of the ball in college
54:12
Speaker 2: where they wouldn't let him, Well, it was that it
54:14
Speaker 2: was a different time because he dominated special teams and
54:17
Speaker 2: it was a great kick returner, put returner, and was
54:21
Speaker 2: straight up shut down corner, probably the best shut down corner.
54:24
Speaker 2: They wouldn't let him. I don't think they would let him.
54:27
Speaker 2: But I mean, just to what with Travis Hunt. To me,
54:30
Speaker 2: it's not even necessarily like the statistics, it's just the
54:33
Speaker 2: amount of that he plays. I mean, he's playing one
54:36
Speaker 2: hundred and twenty one hundred plus plays.
54:39
Speaker 5: A game, and I'm interested to know how many players
54:42
Speaker 5: across the nation are doing what he's doing exactly none exactly.
54:46
Speaker 2: And and if you just said that, yeah, if you
54:49
Speaker 2: are doing that, you're not playing at his level. You're
54:53
Speaker 2: not like the number one doing the number one, like
54:58
Speaker 2: literally the number one receiving the nation. And he's literally
55:01
Speaker 2: like the number one. You can say, top five, top three,
55:04
Speaker 2: stop three in the corner.
55:05
Speaker 4: So it's like, yeah, that's just yeah, that plays your mind.
55:09
Speaker 2: And what do you like? What can you what can
55:12
Speaker 2: you say about that? There's nothing that you can you
55:15
Speaker 2: can say and there's and this has nothing nothing to
55:20
Speaker 2: do with Dion other than the fact that he dare
55:24
Speaker 2: do that with him. That's a fact. I agree with
55:26
Speaker 2: that Couse ninety nine, probably percent of most coaches would
55:33
Speaker 2: have set him on one side of the ball more
55:35
Speaker 2: than likely offense and kick return punk Return'd a dB
55:41
Speaker 2: for me? Well, he would be for me. But but
55:45
Speaker 2: his speed and he get the ball in his hand,
55:48
Speaker 2: he's got a chance to score all of that kind
55:50
Speaker 2: of stuff. I think it's just you know, how to
55:52
Speaker 2: meet DB's the hardest position in sports, and with that
55:56
Speaker 2: athleticism and what he can do and just change the direction.
55:59
Speaker 2: I mean, I don't he'll be a dB for me,
56:02
Speaker 2: But like it's just unprecedented, and like I said, just
56:05
Speaker 2: go ahead and wrap it up. Do you think do
56:10
Speaker 2: you think that that there isn't there is truly an
56:14
Speaker 2: issue with again, whoever's gonna choose the Heisman? Is there
56:20
Speaker 2: an issue with them giving it to him? I think
56:23
Speaker 2: the only issue that they would possibly try to bring
56:26
Speaker 2: up is that his team's not gonna make the playoffs.
56:28
Speaker 2: I mean, are nine and three. They had a good season,
56:31
Speaker 2: they had a turnaround season from when Dion got there.
56:35
Speaker 2: So I think that's the only because normally what they
56:37
Speaker 2: try to say and and again the Heisman is it's
56:40
Speaker 2: been a joke at times because of what they've done
56:42
Speaker 2: is they just gave it to the best player on
56:43
Speaker 2: the best team, or the quarterback on the best team,
56:46
Speaker 2: the best player. So I think this is an opportunity
56:49
Speaker 2: for them to auto correct and they're actually actually actually
56:53
Speaker 2: going to give it to just the best player, irrespective
56:56
Speaker 2: of anything else.
56:57
Speaker 5: So yeah, I mean that would be a week week
57:01
Speaker 5: excuse if they say, well, he wasn't on a team
57:04
Speaker 5: that's you know in the championship hunt. I mean that
57:08
Speaker 5: is hopefully that won't be the route it goes. I
57:10
Speaker 5: really feel like he's probably the most deserving player at
57:13
Speaker 5: this point.
57:14
Speaker 2: If they let's assume they picked X right and they
57:17
Speaker 2: don't pick him, they're not going to say why they
57:20
Speaker 2: didn't pick him right, I mean, and that would be
57:27
Speaker 2: the issue is just because no one is going to
57:29
Speaker 2: say I didn't I didn't pick it. So my fear
57:34
Speaker 2: is if they go somewhere else, there is nobody to
57:39
Speaker 2: try to blame, Like, I don't know who.
57:42
Speaker 4: Who vote speculation. The media would definitely speculate on that.
57:46
Speaker 2: There's no question, and I think there'd be a big argument,
57:49
Speaker 2: there would be a huge contract on the other The
57:51
Speaker 2: only other player that's even in the race is the
57:54
Speaker 2: running back from Boise, and I think the only reason
57:56
Speaker 2: they would people would vote or go because they want
57:58
Speaker 2: to bring back the evalence of the running back. So
58:01
Speaker 2: I can imagine some some some players because I think
58:04
Speaker 2: the players who were heismans get to vote, so I
58:06
Speaker 2: can imagine some of the older running backs to say, hey,
58:08
Speaker 2: I'm going to go for a running back just because
58:09
Speaker 2: we want to prop the running back up again. So
58:12
Speaker 2: I think that's the only the only way you can
58:15
Speaker 2: sort of.
58:16
Speaker 4: I just don't even think that.
58:19
Speaker 2: Because I mean, I'm gone with you, Hollis. When you
58:22
Speaker 2: say who is the best player in college football, there's
58:26
Speaker 2: not a conversation. There's not even a number two. It's
58:28
Speaker 2: not say the running back is closed. But that's it.
58:32
Speaker 5: And that's coming up soon, right, the Heisman Trophy, like
58:35
Speaker 5: in the next week or so, after the championship games,
58:39
Speaker 5: before that, before yeah, maybe in between.
58:44
Speaker 2: Maybe the next week or two. Yeah, I think it's
58:46
Speaker 2: coming up. Should be well, I'm I'm hoping that they
58:50
Speaker 2: do the right thing. And if they don't, man, it's
58:53
Speaker 2: just a jump. You better be you better be on,
58:56
Speaker 2: you better be looking for prime.
58:58
Speaker 4: To he's he'll have something to say, no question.
59:03
Speaker 2: It's almost like you're invalidated if you don't do the
59:05
Speaker 2: right thing. And then we got to give a shout
59:07
Speaker 2: out and sending our prayers and condulences, not condulencens, but
59:11
Speaker 2: prayers to Randy Moss. He's going through a health issues
59:14
Speaker 2: with his eyes and whatnot. Yep, I'm glad that you
59:16
Speaker 2: did hit that. I actually forgot about that. I had
59:22
Speaker 2: heard about it and then I sent down to text,
59:24
Speaker 2: and you know, I didn't expect a response back, but
59:28
Speaker 2: I just felt like it was something for me knowing
59:32
Speaker 2: him and respecting him as I do. I wanted to
59:36
Speaker 2: make sure that I did reach out to him, so
59:37
Speaker 2: at least you know, he knew that I was. I
59:40
Speaker 2: was thinking about him and whatever this is man like
59:43
Speaker 2: I said, I'm I'm hoping that it's nothing too serious
59:49
Speaker 2: and uh and he can get through it as quick
59:51
Speaker 2: as possible. All right, So one more time for Frank Walker.
