- 0:09Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:12you grow as a coach. We're bringing the once a year
- 0:15track clinic straight to your ears daily.
- 0:17Interested in creating your own episode?
- 0:19Everyone's welcome to participate.
- 0:21Check out the show notes below For more information.
- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27When you're stuck inside in those hallways, this is a great
- 0:30time to do it. So obviously it's a little bit
- 0:33harder because if you put sock on the linoleum, you're just
- 0:36asking for an ice skating rink. But maybe you have some sticky
- 0:39socks from like, what's that called?
- 0:43Air jump or whatever. Those places are trampoline
- 0:45places. Maybe they have those sticky
- 0:47socks, right? Oh my God, I don't know.
- 0:50We all have kids. We know what we're talking about
- 0:51because they stink. But you use those sticky socks
- 0:55as grip socks and you have them do low level remedial hops in
- 1:00their socks. Now, I did just say those things
- 1:03are hard. So I'm not telling you to go out
- 1:04for 50 meters. Or maybe that's when you use
- 1:07their contacts, just five contacts.
- 1:11Because what you're doing then is strengthening the foot.
- 1:15We know our shoes disable our feet at this point.
- 1:18They literally are. They look super cool.
- 1:20Don't get me wrong with stick your head through and through,
- 1:24but all they do is make it so that our feet don't have to work
- 1:26anymore. So if I get a grippy sock and I
- 1:30do remedial low level hops, just on the right leg, just on the
- 1:34left leg, double leg, right, right, left lateral hops so that
- 1:38my outside of my leg is leading the point.
- 1:41Medial hops so the inside of my leg is leading the front.
- 1:45All of these things will allow myself to get stronger, a better
- 1:49proprioception, so better awareness of space as well as
- 1:55injury prevention. So this the fall season, that's
- 1:59all we're doing. They grow these movements so
- 2:02they look more like quote UN quote track and field.
- 2:05But even then, so like this is a good definite 3 weeks of the
- 2:11fall season and then I start to let it evolve.
- 2:15So what does this look like for a pole?
- 2:17Right Pole. It's pretty big in your house
- 2:19area. Maybe not with whoever might be
- 2:21sitting in the room, but I'm doing these things and I have a
- 2:24stubby in my hand. I'm just carrying the stubby
- 2:28because now I'm actually marrying the bottom hands to
- 2:32feet. I've got to have rhythm and I've
- 2:34got to be able to feel in space where I'm going with my top
- 2:37hand, my bottom hand. Am I going farther out from the
- 2:40body? Am I holding too close?
- 2:42Am I starting to cross the body with the pole?
- 2:45Am I letting my pole go way outside to the right or the left
- 2:49respectively? Easy peasy things, but I haven't
- 2:53done anything hard yet. What does it look like for high
- 2:56jump? I mean, at any given moment I
- 2:59can start putting pressure on that outside foot and
- 3:02incorporating that curve to do a 321 hypenia or a left right left
- 3:08or a right left right. It doesn't have to be big level
- 3:12and it doesn't have to have so much space.
- 3:14I can do it with the with the hallway.
- 3:19If you're blessed and you have an indoor facility, by all means
- 3:22keep it small than medical. You know, I, I've mainly focused
- 3:27on the horizontals because it's the easiest to describe, but I
- 3:29think you've gotten the perspective of where we're going
- 3:32with this. The small movements can grow
- 3:34really great, but a really hard time doing the big movements and
- 3:38then going backwards. So, you know, for lack of a
- 3:43better way, and I'm sure you're all familiar.
- 3:44That's the demise of having Instagram, TikTok and YouTube
- 3:48and see the big movements first, try to emulate them.
- 3:52And so when I try to break it down, they're like, but I can't
- 3:54do that slow or I can't do that controlled.
- 3:56I know you can't because you're not strong enough to do the big
- 3:59movement. Do the little movements strong.
- 4:02The big movement is easy. You know, we hear all of the
- 4:07elite athletes when they PB or get that big jump or big jump
- 4:12over a bar. It was effortless.
- 4:14Do you know why? You let the science, science and
- 4:16you let everything create to just happen.
- 4:19You got out of the way. You shouldn't have to force
- 4:23anything. Everything just happens.
- 4:26You let the stars align and distance is the distance.
- 4:31So as I wrap up, I have about 3 minutes left on my clock.
- 4:35Do I have any questions, comments or any anything you'd
- 4:38like me to go? Oh, I see a handcuff the series.
- 4:40Let's go. Did you say you just coached
- 4:43Shot and Dickie do any of the zeros?
- 4:48Can somebody who's closer to the mic tell me what she's saying
- 4:51sorry or come up to the mic, whatever you'd like to do.
- 4:54I don't know what you're comfortable with.
- 4:55It throws in. Here did.
- 4:59You coach throws, did you coach? Shot yes, so I I actively coach
- 5:04shot disk and Jeff and this is all viable for all of that.
- 5:09That's how to add if OK, right, OK, got it all viable because
- 5:14think about it right. So if I'm just doing a glide in
- 5:16the shot put ring, if I have very minimal lower leg
- 5:19stiffness, reactivity and tendon strength, I can't displace
- 5:22myself from the back of the ring to the front of the ring.
- 5:24I can't get from my power position to plant that that I'm
- 5:28I'm a right-handed thrower. I can't displace myself and get
- 5:30into that block position with the left leg to then turn the
- 5:33hip to separate the top, then to push into it and then land
- 5:38safely right. If I'm thinking about javelin,
- 5:40which I know you all don't throw the jab, but there's no way I'm
- 5:43getting crossovers done effectively if I don't have
- 5:47lower length strength and the ability to have the elasticity,
- 5:51erect reactiveness in those tendons.
- 5:54So yes, I have. So when I was at Wabash down in
- 5:56Crawfordsville IN, they said death by Chew.
- 6:00They called it death by chew and it was great.
- 6:03The throwers that they hated to love me so much because they
- 6:07knew they were going to get, they were, they felt themselves
- 6:09getting better, more agile, more able bodied to move, but it was
- 6:13hard. And so like I had no joke at 1.1
- 6:18of the more agile throwers was like, coach, I'm going to raise
- 6:23somebody from your group. I was like, yo, no, not going to
- 6:27let happen because your coach is going to come yell at me.
- 6:30Nope, not going to do it. But like they, you know, they
- 6:33let us know. They ended up racing one day and
- 6:35I was like, I don't want to know, you said too much already,
- 6:40but no, yes, definitely throwers should be doing movements like
- 6:43this. Great question.
- 6:45Yes, Sir. So I I have middle schoolers and
- 6:50I also become coach Cobalting. So the the last three steps are
- 6:55always problematic to to get the tips for that.
- 7:05I'll be honest with you, rehearsal, rehearsal off the
- 7:07runway. So any rehearsals that have to
- 7:11go with a foul or a take off, Mark, I rehearse them off the
- 7:14runway first and then we bring them back to the runway.
- 7:18It's human nature to keep the body safe, right?
- 7:20Our brain says, hey, stupid, don't run into that.
- 7:23Or even for a success failure rate.
- 7:26We don't want to fail, so we don't want to scratch, foul or
- 7:30even run under. You know, you got to keep
- 7:33yourself from running under. Don't run under, don't run
- 7:35under. We constantly tell them that.
- 7:36So how do I reverse that? Take it off the runway?
- 7:40And what I'll do is I, I use chalk.
- 7:42What I found, especially with the grade group that you're
- 7:45Speaking of, if I give them wickets or mini hurdles or even
- 7:49cones it, it's too much for them, the visual barriers too
- 7:53much. So I just draw chalk lines.
- 7:56What's harmless and what's a Great Barrier is your shoes.
- 8:00They're not scared of shoes, but what they don't want to do is
- 8:03step on their shoe because they love their shoes, right?
- 8:06So you use that as the wicked or the cone and have them prescribe
- 8:09their steps so that they're staying equal, consistent and
- 8:13whatnot into those last three steps.
- 8:17Give them a rhythm too. They're all rhythmic.
- 8:20They can all TikTok at this point, right?
- 8:25That they know what that sounds like.
- 8:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:29Great questions. Oh, love.
- 8:32I'm one minute over. Don't kill me.
- 8:34That that time is built in because he don't come on until
- 8:371:15. So if you got a question.
- 8:39Bet 14 minutes. Let's use it.
- 8:43See, you can't give me an inch because I'll take a mile every
- 8:46time, Frank. Oh, in terms.
- 8:52Of I'm sorry, I can't hear you. I'm pulling myself closer like I
- 9:01can hear you better. It's OK in terms of jumping
- 9:05vertically and horizontally. Can you explain the importance
- 9:07of the weight room in the preseason versus the actual
- 9:10season? Importance of the weight room.
- 9:14For. Vertical versus or vertical and.
- 9:17And. Vertical.
- 9:19And so OK, I'm, I'm going to speak to age groups again,
- 9:26familiarity that's developed in those movements are going to be
- 9:30more important than the power gained.
- 9:35The power gained is necessary, don't get me wrong.
- 9:38But if I'm not coordinated nor confident enough to elicit these
- 9:43movements, there's more at stake, right?
- 9:48So I see, and this is not me judging.
- 9:50This is me not knowing all the background.
- 9:52So I am just judging what's in front of me or critiquing, I
- 9:54should say. I see these freshmen trying to
- 9:58clean. Yeah.
- 10:01And I'm like, Oh my God, I'm not sure I want that happening,
- 10:06right? Because they have no idea.
- 10:08And our collegiates. So I'm talking about freshmen
- 10:11collegiates, not even freshmen in high school freshman.
- 10:15I said that out loud and I'm dead honest about that.
- 10:18Because what they're not doing is any type of high pool.
- 10:21It is all mid back. And I'm like, oh, there goes the
- 10:24thoracic. No wonder your back hurts,
- 10:28right? So what I want in the weight
- 10:30room before, when I know they're capable, I'm going to teach the
- 10:33movements and whatnot, but I can't miss what they need in
- 10:37power and movement, right? So I just take a mid ball and
- 10:41they're going to start at a standing position, drop your
- 10:45center of mass, explode up and throw the Met Ball.
- 10:47That's a snatch with no repercussions.
- 10:52Well, OK, you got to get out from under the ball centers and
- 10:54bonk you on the head. One repercussion.
- 10:57But you know what? If you get bonked, that's
- 10:59another indicator. Your butt don't need to be doing
- 11:01this yet. Like you need to get the
- 11:03coordinated, you know, And then the converse of that is center
- 11:08of mass, balls at center of mass raise high slam downs.
- 11:12These are all weight room movements that don't require the
- 11:16weight room. Now when you start to show
- 11:19evolution, you're you're able and you need to grow into these
- 11:23different movements, then yes, you're still on the quote UN
- 11:27quote rate room. So I'm going to use the words
- 11:28that you used, but the movements are different, right?
- 11:32Show coordination, show confidence and show ability
- 11:37before we move on. Now, I'm not trying to tell you
- 11:40that you need to stay with those Med ball slams forever.
- 11:44You need to trial give them give them a a wooden dowel, A broom
- 11:48handle if you need and practice those movements.
- 11:53What does a snatch look like? What does a clean look like?
- 11:55What does a jerk look like? All these things you can build
- 12:00up to it. You go down to Menards, Lowe's
- 12:03ace, whatever's closest to you. Buy APVC pipe, use that first.
- 12:10Throw 3 lbs of sand into the PVC pipe, put caps on it, and now
- 12:15you've got a weighted bar. That's whatever path like $0.50.
- 12:23Be innovative. Do what you got to do to get
- 12:26your athletes there. Don't be stuck that they have to
- 12:29have a barbell or a dumbbell or a kettlebell on their hands.
- 12:32Resistance bands, same thing. So are these, I'm going to call
- 12:38it movements in the weight room necessary for output?
- 12:41Yes, but it doesn't have to be the bar with plates and things
- 12:46like that. So you, you, you got a lot more
- 12:49than you. You went to Costco for that
- 12:51Menard or all the trips. Sorry.
- 12:57Any other questions or anything that I can expand on?
- 13:05Oh. Hey coach, aren't you hosting a
- 13:09level 1 here pretty soon for USA Track and Field?
- 13:13It just happened. So I taught on a level one
- 13:16staff. I think it was last weekend.
- 13:18The day's mix up last weekend. We have one coming up.
- 13:22If you go to usatf.org and in the search bar search for
- 13:28coaches education, the calendar for the remainder of the year is
- 13:33up there. I know as educators we just put
- 13:37in our availability, availability for years on the
- 13:41schools on the calendar. Going into next year, more will
- 13:44pop up. Just whatever is available now.
- 13:46So that calendar is coming up. Level 2 is happening if you
- 13:50already have your level 1. Level 2 is happening in
- 13:52December. It that will go out.
- 13:55We're gonna only offer three event groups.
- 14:00I can tell you that combined events isn't one of them because
- 14:04I'm, I'm not, I know I'm not teaching in December.
- 14:08And then we're looking to host potentially another one towards
- 14:11the summer time. They're a hybrid course.
- 14:15So you'll do some independent studies via Zoom?
- 14:18Not via Zoom, I'm sorry. Via modules that we e-mail out
- 14:21to you and then we come together for about 3 days, I think, to
- 14:27apply everything that you've learned.
- 14:29And then we do check for understanding and a little bit
- 14:31of learn by doing. Each of the event groups do it a
- 14:34little bit differently. So I can't speak to as to what
- 14:36everybody does, but the general consensus is everybody's doing
- 14:39an application. I'll learn by doing and then
- 14:44I'll check for understanding. Is there social media or your
- 14:49contacts somewhere to be found? Your your social media, in your
- 14:52contacts. Can I type in?
- 14:55Do you see what I type in here? I can actually give it to him,
- 14:59but if you want to type it up, Yep, go ahead.
- 15:02Yeah, so. Well, where'd that go?
- 15:07There it is. Sorry.
- 15:17You know what? I don't know my IG handle.
- 15:20That's bad. I'm sorry.
- 15:23That's her e-mail and. I get.
- 15:26Her IG handle to you guys like to be honest with you guys like
- 15:30she is my mentor. So like she is the person that I
- 15:34call for all jumps advice. And if you can have her as an
- 15:38instructor, whether it's level 1 or level 2, she is the person to
- 15:42have. So if you have any time in your
- 15:45schedule to get to that class and she's on the docket to teach
- 15:49it, I say do it. It is worth every penny that
- 15:52you're going to spend. OK.
- 15:59That was Paul. Paul is see, Paul is in level 2
- 16:03with me, Low is in level 2 with me.
- 16:06There's so, I mean, you just got literally like a screenshot of
- 16:11what I do and what I, how I go because this is my passion.
- 16:15I mean, kind of like what Cunningham said in the
- 16:17beginning, like coaches club was nothing besides me not wanting
- 16:21to sit still. I don't know how to sit still.
- 16:23I, I, I, that's one of the worst things that I do in life.
- 16:27And so in doing that, like I came up with a group, I, I
- 16:32thought we were, you know, COVID, we all thought we were
- 16:34just going to be limited for a little bit, but I was like, Yo,
- 16:36let's all get for coffee and we'll just talk and not drive
- 16:39ourselves crazy. And that turned into a 4000
- 16:42person group that, you know, across the nation and, and
- 16:45literally international. And all we did for that whole
- 16:47entire time was talk track and education and, and how do I grow
- 16:51myself professionally and things like that?
- 16:53So this is my passion. I'm just blessed enough to get
- 16:56actually paid to do all that I do.
- 16:59So however I can be a resource for you, I'll be honest, my IG
- 17:02handle I do post some training stuff, definitely more results,
- 17:08but I also I'm trying to be better about do training.
- 17:14Her IG handle is big. under score league under score.
- 17:19She's 13. Yeah, big.
- 17:25Under Score League Under Score 2 13.
- 17:31Yeah, big league. I'm a baseball fan.
- 17:34So a big league Chew. Like the gum.
- 17:37Yeah, that's where I got it from.
- 17:41Yeah, so. But yes, no, there it is.
- 17:46I'll write it up there for you. 13 Yep.
- 17:50Hey y'all give coach 2A round of applause.
- 17:55Hey Coach, thank you and I will chat with you later.
- 17:59Appreciate you guys, have a great day, have fun.
