- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everybody, Happy Friday night. We welcome you to another
- 0:02Speaker 1: edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Show ahead of another
- 0:05Speaker 1: big game for the Huskies. It'll be you kind of
- 0:07Speaker 1: usc tomorrow night, and Gino is here with us, says,
- 0:11Speaker 1: we talk about the Notre Dame game a little bit,
- 0:13Speaker 1: but we'll also start with what happened Tuesday night. It's
- 0:16Speaker 1: not often that a team shoots the way your team did,
- 0:18Speaker 1: particularly in the first quarter. I'm not sure you saw
- 0:21Speaker 1: that coming, because I know we've talked about during the
- 0:23Speaker 1: course of the season, there have been stretches that this
- 0:25Speaker 1: team has not been a great shooting team so far.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That certainly was not the case the other night.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been very much on record as saying that
- 0:39Speaker 2: I don't worry about how many we don't make that
- 0:44Speaker 2: I worry about whether or not we get enough attempts
- 0:49Speaker 2: and we get quality attempts. I figured the percentages will
- 0:56Speaker 2: catch up to us, just like the percentages will catch
- 0:59Speaker 2: up to us. That we made twenty the other night.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You know that's not that's not normal, and that's not sustainable.
- 1:09Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean that if you keep getting those
- 1:12Speaker 2: quality looks that we got the other night, that you
- 1:15Speaker 2: can't significantly, you know, improve your chances of winning. You
- 1:21Speaker 2: look at the notre end game, one of the big
- 1:23Speaker 2: glaring things you look at is the lack of you know,
- 1:27Speaker 2: the low number of attempts relative to what we've been
- 1:30Speaker 2: doing over the course of the season. So that's something
- 1:35Speaker 2: that we that we have obviously address all the time.
- 1:40Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, scoring thirty six points in the
- 1:44Speaker 2: first quarter against a pretty good team, that's not it's
- 1:48Speaker 2: not that's not how you walk into a game. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: that's a pleasant surprise.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and the first fourteen from Ash certainly you probably
- 1:56Speaker 1: weren't expecting. But in a lot of games, whether it
- 2:00Speaker 1: be a home or on the road, it seems like
- 2:02Speaker 1: when Ash makes the first couple of shots, your team's
- 2:05Speaker 1: in good shape. When she doesn't, it becomes a little
- 2:08Speaker 1: more of a struggle. And it was just good to
- 2:10Speaker 1: see her get off to a good start, and not
- 2:11Speaker 1: just the three ball, but that mid range game that
- 2:13Speaker 1: she's so good at.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, when when you think about uh players that are scorers,
- 2:22Speaker 2: you know, you want them to not have a conscience
- 2:26Speaker 2: when it comes to did it go in or did
- 2:29Speaker 2: it not go in? You just want them to have
- 2:33Speaker 2: a shooter's mentality, your confidence level, your success rate can't
- 2:42Speaker 2: depend on if the first two go in or not. Okay,
- 2:46Speaker 2: because if the first two don't go in, that doesn't
- 2:48Speaker 2: mean the next eight can't. But a lot of kids,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, a lot of players, you know, the basket
- 2:52Speaker 2: starts to look bigger and bigger if they make the
- 2:54Speaker 2: first two or three, and then if they missed, they
- 2:58Speaker 2: think the basket gets smaller. But the best it stays
- 3:00Speaker 2: the same size the whole time. And so you know, luckily,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you know, we have somebody like Paige who doesn't care,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, and she's going to shoot open shots. Whether
- 3:12Speaker 2: she missed the first ten, she thinks she's making the
- 3:14Speaker 2: next ten. So yeah, if we can get asked to
- 3:17Speaker 2: operate the same way as Page does, I think that
- 3:20Speaker 2: would go a long way towards having her have more
- 3:23Speaker 2: nights where where she's just unconscious. That's why I would
- 3:30Speaker 2: like for her to play.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, is that something you still have to convince her of,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you know, being just early in her second season.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, I think that that might end up
- 3:41Speaker 2: being you know, like a whole four year thing where
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know, let's focus on was at a good shot
- 3:50Speaker 2: or not? A good shot, and if it was a
- 3:51Speaker 2: good shot and it didn't go in, well, get ten
- 3:54Speaker 2: more of those and I think everything will be fine.
- 3:57Speaker 2: You know. Yeah, that's a that's a teaching point, that's
- 4:01Speaker 2: a growing up point that you have to have. And
- 4:05Speaker 2: you know, Ashes such a conscientious kid that and I
- 4:13Speaker 2: know she wants to do well, so she's open. I
- 4:17Speaker 2: expect her to shoot it and I think it's going in.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I hope she does too.
- 4:21Speaker 1: One thing we've talked about is trying to get a
- 4:23Speaker 1: killer mentality on this team. Built a big lead. Iowa
- 4:26Speaker 1: State scored eleven straight, you got the next seven, but
- 4:29Speaker 1: then foot to gas to start the third quarter with
- 4:32Speaker 1: a couple of eight and nine nothing runs in that
- 4:36Speaker 1: third quarter. That had to feel really good and good
- 4:38Speaker 1: to see for your team.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I do think that's a big part of your success.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I think you have to be able to capitalize on
- 4:49Speaker 2: when when you're on a run and you just keep
- 4:54Speaker 2: adding to it, adding to it and adding to it,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and let your defense give you opportunities to add to it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: The other secret is that when you miss four or
- 5:04Speaker 2: five shots in a row, your defense has to get
- 5:07Speaker 2: even better. And then when the other team scores five straight.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You have to be able to answer and how do
- 5:13Speaker 2: you answer, Well, it's a learning thing that now we
- 5:16Speaker 2: need our best shooter taking the best shot. They just
- 5:20Speaker 2: scored seven straight. Well, we can't have just anybody chucking
- 5:23Speaker 2: something up, right, If we're on an eighteen to nothing row,
- 5:27Speaker 2: go ahead, knock yourself out. But that's you know, that's
- 5:30Speaker 2: not the way the world works. And again that becomes
- 5:36Speaker 2: a learning thing and it makes your team better. How
- 5:39Speaker 2: do we maximize our runs and then how we put
- 5:42Speaker 2: an end to someone else's run quickly?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Was that why you call the time out? I think
- 5:47Speaker 1: it was in that second quarter during that run, more
- 5:49Speaker 1: defensively than offensively.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought there were there were lapses defensively, and
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think when that happens too, and you're making so
- 6:03Speaker 2: many shots and now they stop going in for a
- 6:07Speaker 2: short period of time, it looked like we were just
- 6:10Speaker 2: standing around, passing the ball to each other, going okay,
- 6:13Speaker 2: who's turn is it to shoot? We lost all the
- 6:16Speaker 2: movement that we had that got us those great shots.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And because we were standing around, now our transition defense
- 6:23Speaker 2: isn't as good and our half court defense isn't as good.
- 6:27Speaker 2: So yeah, the timeout was more about you know what
- 6:31Speaker 2: we have to do, as opposed to, hey, this is
- 6:33Speaker 2: what they're doing to us, which is usually the case.
- 6:36Speaker 1: More of Gino as we continue on the U kind
- 6:38Speaker 1: of Women's basketball Coaches show here in just a moment
