- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, folks.
- 0:48Speaker 1: This week we are celebrating thirteen years of the Philadelphia
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sports Table podcast show. In your ears if you're watching
- 0:56Speaker 1: on YouTube, Hello, it is great to see you. And
- 1:01Speaker 1: I will say this, it is so completely ironic that
- 1:04Speaker 1: we are celebrating our thirteenth year this week. The actual
- 1:08Speaker 1: date is April seventeenth, and none of my co hosts,
- 1:13Speaker 1: my regular co host we're able to join us this week.
- 1:16Speaker 1: How ironic is that Eric has a work obligation, Lenn
- 1:21Speaker 1: has a family obligation that he just was not able
- 1:24Speaker 1: to get out of, but thankfully, thankfully we have with us.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And for those on YouTube, you can see his delightful face,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and for you listening on an audio podcast platform, you're
- 1:36Speaker 1: gonna hear his delightful voice. Our friend from Philadelphia Soccer now,
- 1:40Speaker 1: Josh Schuster, my friend, thanks for filling in for the
- 1:43Speaker 1: guys as we're going to be doing our Flyers preseason
- 1:46Speaker 1: preview and getting into a bunch of other stuff. Man,
- 1:49Speaker 1: it's good to see it. Thanks so much.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Anytime I told you before we started, when you text
- 1:55Speaker 2: me about hopping on the show that he was like, Wow,
- 1:59Speaker 2: it's like the call of the major Oh come on,
- 2:01Speaker 2: need it? No postgat this time, no, no, no stoppage here.
- 2:07Speaker 2: But hey, yeah, it's like it's like being in the
- 2:09Speaker 2: major leagues.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you, yeah, it really is. It really is
- 2:13Speaker 1: with our with with our twenty views on YouTube that
- 2:17Speaker 1: we beget you know, there you go, there you go
- 2:20Speaker 1: after doing this for a year, it has been a
- 2:23Speaker 1: year that we have been on YouTube. I'll tell you, man,
- 2:26Speaker 1: it's just it's a slog it really is. I mean,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I love doing it. I love doing the podcast in general.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Don't look at the analytics, like, dive into the analytics.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I know we've talked about this before and I have
- 2:35Speaker 1: also said it on the show before. A guy over
- 2:38Speaker 1: thirteen years ago told me, if you do a podcast,
- 2:41Speaker 1: if you really dive into the analytics of it, you
- 2:43Speaker 1: are not going to be as passionate about what you're
- 2:45Speaker 1: talking about. And he was absolutely right. And I'm so
- 2:49Speaker 1: glad that I haven't done that. I mean, every now
- 2:52Speaker 1: and then, you look at how many downloads you have,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you look at how many views on YouTube, eh, whatever,
- 2:57Speaker 1: But you know what, at the end of the day.
- 2:58Speaker 1: We're still passionate about the world to Philly sports. That's
- 3:01Speaker 1: why we're here celebrating thirteen years. And I'm glad to
- 3:03Speaker 1: be doing it with you, my friend.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Hey, it's good to be here. And you know, I
- 3:10Speaker 2: have a group text with friends that I've had since
- 3:13Speaker 2: basically elementary school, and I generally tend to piss them
- 3:17Speaker 2: off periodically with my takes, and it was nice the
- 3:20Speaker 2: one time that somebody was upset with with one of
- 3:23Speaker 2: my takes. And so I'm here for however many people,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and I'm here to upset you.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I guess I can't well listen.
- 3:30Speaker 2: We don't want to be time.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we're not going to become the wip of podcasts.
- 3:36Speaker 1: That's never been our angle. That's never been our angle.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And I know that's not your angle either, I mean,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but the thing is you're passionate. Honestly, you are their
- 3:44Speaker 1: good friend Matt Rodgers, who's also done Eagles post game
- 3:46Speaker 1: shows as well. I want to throw that out there
- 3:49Speaker 1: as well. Appreciate Matt jumping on over all these years
- 3:52Speaker 1: just like you. You know, we're passionate about these freaking
- 3:55Speaker 1: Philly sports teams that drive us nuts. They give us
- 3:58Speaker 1: good times, they give us bad time, they give us
- 4:00Speaker 1: times in between, and they've given us the feels constantly.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But i'll tell you right now before okay, to unpack
- 4:08Speaker 1: some things, folks. Before Josh and I hit the record button,
- 4:11Speaker 1: he was getting a little upset and rightfully so, rightfully
- 4:16Speaker 1: so about streaming services and how we can't be sports
- 4:21Speaker 1: fans anyway. We can't be sports fans anymore and watch
- 4:24Speaker 1: sporting experiences on a consistent basis because of these freaking
- 4:29Speaker 1: streaming services and what the sports industry has done to
- 4:33Speaker 1: us fans, making us buy subscriptions continuously. It really stinks. Look,
- 4:40Speaker 1: we got rid of Peacock here, not because we didn't
- 4:42Speaker 1: like it, but because it's ridiculous the amount of streaming
- 4:45Speaker 1: services that we have in our home. And my wife
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I were like, you know what, we're gonna save
- 4:50Speaker 1: over one hundred bucks a year. And yes it's a
- 4:52Speaker 1: hundred bucks a year, but we're gonna save a hundred
- 4:53Speaker 1: bucks a year by getting rid of Peacock because we
- 4:55Speaker 1: really don't watch it all that much, and we're thinking
- 4:58Speaker 1: about maybe getting rid of some other p platforms as
- 5:00Speaker 1: well that we don't just watch that often. But when
- 5:03Speaker 1: you're a sports fan these days, you got to have
- 5:05Speaker 1: just about everything out there.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Josh, it's ridiculous, Jeff, being the huge Liverpool supporter that
- 5:12Speaker 2: you are that I know, how are you going to
- 5:14Speaker 2: be able to watch the Liverpool matches? Now?
- 5:16Speaker 1: I mean that's I'm broken up.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You've heard of Peacock.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm broken up inside.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I you know, I think in John, you're
- 5:27Speaker 2: you're older than I am. Not to rub it in
- 5:29Speaker 2: a little.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Bit, perhaps a little bit, sir.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So like this year, my friends and I were turning forty,
- 5:37Speaker 2: and you know there's a certain marker that comes with forty.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So I'm already like my birthdays in January and I'm
- 5:44Speaker 2: already like months building up to this, right, Yeah, and
- 5:48Speaker 2: so tonight I go first off, first angry rant. This
- 5:54Speaker 2: NBA playing is just it's the dumbest thing we have,
- 6:00Speaker 2: the NBA Cup, Like, I don't know how many bad
- 6:03Speaker 2: decisions the NBA can continue to make. It is a
- 6:07Speaker 2: chuck it up three point league where nobody plays defense.
- 6:10Speaker 2: They have a play in tournament where I was talking
- 6:13Speaker 2: with one of my buddies and I'm like, yeah, the
- 6:16Speaker 2: play in starts tomorrow, and They're like what what are
- 6:19Speaker 2: you talking about? And I'm like, well, yeah, the Sixers.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You know, they're the seventh seed, but they're trying to
- 6:24Speaker 2: win their games to remain the seventh seed. And they're like,
- 6:28Speaker 2: wait a second, they finished with the seventh beth right.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I'm like, don't try to figure it out. So then
- 6:34Speaker 2: I sit down and go turn it on and I'm
- 6:37Speaker 2: going through all the channels on TV. And now I'm
- 6:39Speaker 2: feeling really old because I'm I'm becoming increasingly agitated as
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'm like, where are the.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Ships are there on my TV? Somebody get out the
- 6:50Speaker 1: cathode ray tube?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yes, right, get one of my kids to move the
- 6:56Speaker 2: or the years right. Yes. So I'm like, oh, it's
- 7:01Speaker 2: on Peacock okay, Hi, Leyay, it's on Peacock Okay. So
- 7:07Speaker 2: I turn on Peacock within or Amazon. It's on Prime.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Within five minutes of putting it on Prime, the screen
- 7:15Speaker 2: goes black right in the middle of them chucking up
- 7:18Speaker 2: a shot and just remains blank for like fifty seconds,
- 7:21Speaker 2: and I'm like, what are we doing anyway, I'm starting
- 7:25Speaker 2: to feel old. I'm now acting old, and I'm like,
- 7:28Speaker 2: this is just ridiculous. It is and it's not just
- 7:31Speaker 2: the NBA, look at the NFL. Absolutely, you now need Netflix,
- 7:35Speaker 2: you need Amazon Prime.
- 7:37Speaker 3: You need Peacock, you need Peacock Peacock. Yeah, and then
- 7:42Speaker 3: you need regular TV or you need Paramount.
- 7:47Speaker 2: If you don't have regular TV, I just I can't
- 7:52Speaker 2: and we're wrestling it coming up. So I'm also a
- 7:56Speaker 2: huge wrestling like I don't even think you know this
- 7:58Speaker 2: about me anyway, huge drilling fan. The fact that ESPN
- 8:03Speaker 2: wants more money for me for me to be able
- 8:05Speaker 2: to watch it to night again.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Ah, anyway, it's in ranging. Sorry, did I scare you?
- 8:13Speaker 1: It is? You said you scared the dog, the poor dog. Gosh,
- 8:17Speaker 1: it is though, it's arranging. Look, how you know I remember? Okay,
- 8:22Speaker 1: so years and years ago, and folks know that I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: involved in the government and political arena. Years ago, there
- 8:30Speaker 1: was an old senator whose name was John McCain, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: I remember well something that he was so passionate about
- 8:35Speaker 1: was creating an ala carte based TV type system where
- 8:41Speaker 1: people could just purchase what they wanted. We kind of
- 8:45Speaker 1: ended up doing that to an extent, and it really
- 8:48Speaker 1: manifested itself after he passed away. But now we are
- 8:53Speaker 1: at the extreme part of that where where the corporate conglomerates,
- 8:58Speaker 1: the entertainment company, the broadcasting companies have gotten together and said, Okay,
- 9:04Speaker 1: we need to be able to milk this for all
- 9:06Speaker 1: we can, and we need to be able to take
- 9:09Speaker 1: advantage of our consumers as much as we can. And
- 9:12Speaker 1: I don't laugh there, folks, because I think it's funny.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm laughing because it's tragic and the fact that it
- 9:18Speaker 1: continues to happen over and over. This is not spent.
- 9:21Speaker 1: This is not meant to be a government political type
- 9:22Speaker 1: of thing. It's our reality. It's our sports reality. Because
- 9:25Speaker 1: of what Josh was just saying, we need to buy
- 9:28Speaker 1: all these different services, whether it's ten dollars a month,
- 9:32Speaker 1: fifteen dollars a month, twenty five dollars a month, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I have to I get Hulu Live, that's what's seventy
- 9:38Speaker 1: five dollars a month, so that I can actually watch
- 9:41Speaker 1: Philly sports when I want to and when they're on live,
- 9:45Speaker 1: so that I can do this podcast too. It's a
- 9:47Speaker 1: crazy cycle. It's a nutty cycle here, Josh.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's like you said, it's just kind of
- 9:54Speaker 2: cross the board.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I mean, the problem is they know that they have
- 9:58Speaker 2: you because and there's no way for you to get
- 10:02Speaker 2: every individual thing that you want you watch often, you
- 10:06Speaker 2: have to have multiples, and so it's just anyway.
- 10:10Speaker 1: All right, we could keep yelling at the clouds. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: we could keep yelling at the clouds, but we're not
- 10:17Speaker 1: because we gotta get boy. We're already like ten minutes
- 10:20Speaker 1: into the show and we haven't even gotten to the
- 10:22Speaker 1: first topic. Folks, we do have a great show. We
- 10:25Speaker 1: may actually have to take a break here before we
- 10:27Speaker 1: actually get to the very first topic. We're going to
- 10:29Speaker 1: be getting into Philadelphia Eagles and Howie Roseman, they decided
- 10:32Speaker 1: to add another wide receiver to the roster. What is
- 10:36Speaker 1: that going to mean for this entire AJ Brown discourse
- 10:39Speaker 1: that's been going on throughout this offseason about him potentially
- 10:43Speaker 1: being traded. We're gonna get into that, and then from there, Man,
- 10:46Speaker 1: the Phillies bullpen. They seem to have a Jose Alvarado problem,
- 10:51Speaker 1: Jonathan Boland problem, I mean right now, and just I
- 10:54Speaker 1: mean that's just with regard to the bullpen, Jesus Lozardo.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Tonight as we're recording this Wednesday night on April fifteenth,
- 11:01Speaker 1: Tax Day. Not great, not great, posts, Yeah, exactly, and
- 11:06Speaker 1: then we're gonna get into some Philadelphia Union talk because
- 11:08Speaker 1: we do have on from Philadelphia soccernow dot com. Josh here,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and look, folks are fourteenth in the Eastern Conference and
- 11:15Speaker 1: they've only won one game thus far. Horrendous season, but
- 11:19Speaker 1: we're gonna certainly talk about it, and then from there
- 11:21Speaker 1: we're gonna dive into our Philadelphia Flyers postseason preview. What
- 11:27Speaker 1: we may expect from this team that's got this first
- 11:30Speaker 1: round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. That's I think it's
- 11:33Speaker 1: gonna be a fantastic series. I really do at the
- 11:35Speaker 1: end of the day. And I'm just so incredibly tickled
- 11:39Speaker 1: that this team is in the playoffs and this fan
- 11:41Speaker 1: base seems relatively positive here at this point. So that's
- 11:46Speaker 1: all what we're gonna be getting into on the show
- 11:49Speaker 1: this week. So before we get into the real crux
- 11:52Speaker 1: of everything, we are gonna take a break, folks, and
- 11:54Speaker 1: when we get back, we got some Eagles talk that's
- 11:56Speaker 1: gonna be coming your way. Stick with us, all right,
- 12:01Speaker 1: we are back, and let's now get into the crux
- 12:04Speaker 1: of this show. Josh, the Philadelphi Eagles and Howie Roseman
- 12:08Speaker 1: they decided to add another wide receiver to the roster
- 12:12Speaker 1: and the wide receiver room, and they made a trade
- 12:15Speaker 1: for Dantavian Wicks with the Green Bay Packers. And I mean,
- 12:20Speaker 1: it really does seem to be at this point, this
- 12:25Speaker 1: entire discourse, that AJ Brown is soon going to be
- 12:28Speaker 1: out the door in a trade at some point. It
- 12:31Speaker 1: really that really manifested itself even that much more, the
- 12:34Speaker 1: pendulum swinging, I believe in that direction. Who knows, we'd
- 12:38Speaker 1: never know it. Howie Roseman has up his sleeve. I
- 12:41Speaker 1: don't know, maybe AJ Brown sticks around. To be honest
- 12:43Speaker 1: with you, I would absolutely love it if he did.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I really would. I'm on that particular train that when
- 12:48Speaker 1: you have such a talented, an amazing wide receiver like
- 12:52Speaker 1: AJ Brown, somebody who's caught a Super Bowl touchdown for
- 12:56Speaker 1: your team, I'd really like to keep him. I'd really
- 12:58Speaker 1: like to keep him. Fight the outside noise here, but
- 13:02Speaker 1: it really does seem like a trade is probably going
- 13:04Speaker 1: to be imminent. Are you thinking the same thing, because honestly,
- 13:08Speaker 1: it makes me sad. It really does like that this
- 13:11Speaker 1: that this culmination of this is seems to be coming
- 13:14Speaker 1: to a head here. I don't know, how what have
- 13:15Speaker 1: you been thinking about this?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that a side, Yes to me. I I think
- 13:25Speaker 2: Wicks is a fine player. I'm shocked that they paid
- 13:29Speaker 2: him twelve million.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Dollars here same here man.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And maybe they chose to do that because they have
- 13:36Speaker 2: the cap space and they didn't want to give him
- 13:39Speaker 2: a two year deal. But that's a lot of money
- 13:44Speaker 2: for a guy with very pedestrian numbers. Yeah, they don't
- 13:49Speaker 2: really have a slot wide receiver right now, so they
- 13:54Speaker 2: have They've signed a number of wide receivers. They currently
- 13:58Speaker 2: still have a J. Brah and DeVante's Smith. There's only
- 14:02Speaker 2: so many outside slots.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yes, I mean Hollywood Brown. They got Hollywood Brown coming
- 14:07Speaker 1: in as well.
- 14:08Speaker 2: They have Hollywood Brown. I mean, I guess he could
- 14:11Speaker 2: play in the slot. I just I did like the
- 14:14Speaker 2: Hollywood Brown signing because I do think that they need
- 14:16Speaker 2: somebody else because they seem to love to run, just
- 14:21Speaker 2: shuck it down field, and I think he's good at that.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I don't really know what to make of the AJ
- 14:32Speaker 2: Brown excuse situation, to be honest, I didn't necessarily view
- 14:39Speaker 2: this trade as they're going to move him, for sure.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I kind of view it as they are very clearly
- 14:49Speaker 2: showing that there is going to be a shift that
- 14:53Speaker 2: it is a put up or shut up season for Hurts.
- 14:55Speaker 2: With the passing game, It's almost like maybe they had
- 14:58Speaker 2: a conversation with him and Hertz just said, I'm not
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to run as much, and they said, okay, that
- 15:03Speaker 2: we're going to bring in men and who is a
- 15:05Speaker 2: pass heavy individual or a under the center, run the
- 15:09Speaker 2: ball kind of guy, And we're going to do that
- 15:13Speaker 2: and you're going to have to perform, and we're going
- 15:15Speaker 2: to get a number of weapons and that's just going
- 15:17Speaker 2: to kind of be how it is. So I kind
- 15:19Speaker 2: of took it more as a I almost view the
- 15:22Speaker 2: situation as lose lose because I don't want to get
- 15:27Speaker 2: rid of the AJ Brown. I think he's a very
- 15:30Speaker 2: talented wide receiver with years left. It's going to be
- 15:33Speaker 2: a dead cap number that I really don't see any
- 15:36Speaker 2: benefit of having. It's not like he it's not like
- 15:40Speaker 2: Carson Wentz where he was going down hill and it's
- 15:43Speaker 2: time to replace him because you need better production. The
- 15:47Speaker 2: problem is they don't get Aj Brown the ball enough.
- 15:50Speaker 2: And so anyway, all that is to say, I am
- 15:54Speaker 2: really concerned that we are going to have not that
- 15:58Speaker 2: this has ever happened before in philadel A QB controversy
- 16:04Speaker 2: at the end of the year. I mean, I'm being
- 16:06Speaker 2: and it may start at the draft. I could very
- 16:08Speaker 2: well see. I think if they take a quarterback in
- 16:11Speaker 2: the first three rounds, that kind of shows where their
- 16:15Speaker 2: head is.
- 16:15Speaker 1: With Jalen Hurts, it's crazy to me. It's crazy though
- 16:19Speaker 1: the guy won a super Bowl just a year ago.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You know, it's crazy to meship look at change. Relationships change, yes.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But if you look at him, if he's not going
- 16:32Speaker 2: to run when he is willing to run with the
- 16:34Speaker 2: football and is a dual threat quarterback, he's a top five,
- 16:38Speaker 2: top seven quarterback in the league. When he's not doing that,
- 16:43Speaker 2: he's he's not that. And he's paid like a top five,
- 16:46Speaker 2: top seven guy. So he has no more guaranteed money
- 16:50Speaker 2: after this year. I'm not trying to start anything like,
- 16:55Speaker 2: I'm just you know, I'm just speculating at this point.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And I guess we'll see what happens.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah, we will. I mean we will. But it's just
- 17:02Speaker 1: it's so bizarre because look with Dantavian Wicks, I mean,
- 17:08Speaker 1: he had a nice start to his NFL career after
- 17:10Speaker 1: being selected in the fifth round of the twenty twenty
- 17:13Speaker 1: three draft by the Packers. He had a career high
- 17:16Speaker 1: and receiving yards five hundred and ninety one and it
- 17:20Speaker 1: was it was fourteen point nine yards per catch. He
- 17:23Speaker 1: would then go on to have four hundred and fifteen
- 17:26Speaker 1: yards and five touchdowns in twenty twenty four and only
- 17:29Speaker 1: three hundred and thirty two yards and two touchdowns last year.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You talked about having pedestrian numbers like that. That right
- 17:35Speaker 1: there is That's what it is. And I don't know
- 17:40Speaker 1: because I think we are in this I think we
- 17:43Speaker 1: are in this cycle with the Eagles where we're so
- 17:46Speaker 1: used to certain things being consistent all the time. Offensive line,
- 17:51Speaker 1: even Jalen Hurts his quarterback play, which was honestly, it's
- 17:54Speaker 1: been It's been very very good over the years, aside
- 17:57Speaker 1: from last year other variables. Offensive line really nicked up,
- 18:01Speaker 1: affected Saquon Barkley, the running game. But I think us
- 18:05Speaker 1: Eagles fans at times see the Eagles front office doing
- 18:09Speaker 1: things some and somewhat in a consistent way. But now
- 18:12Speaker 1: Sean Manion and no Jeff Staltlin, things are going to
- 18:15Speaker 1: be different with this offense. And I think this may
- 18:19Speaker 1: be part of it too. Maybe aj Brown sticks around seriously,
- 18:21Speaker 1: maybe maybe the plan is we're gonna have these We're
- 18:24Speaker 1: gonna have these potent wide receivers. I'm not gonna say
- 18:27Speaker 1: they're powerhouses, but potent wide receivers to enhance Jalen Hurts
- 18:33Speaker 1: his passing game. You mentioned, just like the lack of
- 18:35Speaker 1: the running with him and also the lack of him
- 18:38Speaker 1: being able to throw over the middle. We saw it
- 18:39Speaker 1: again this past year. I remember on our Eagles preview
- 18:42Speaker 1: podcast back way back in twenty twenty five, we wanted
- 18:47Speaker 1: to see Jalen Hurts thrown over the middle more. Dontavian
- 18:49Speaker 1: Wicks is a possession receiver. That might be one of
- 18:52Speaker 1: the reasons why that they they they brought him in
- 18:54Speaker 1: to be that possession receiver over the middle. But times
- 18:58Speaker 1: are changing here for sure. We don't know how, we
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't know in what manner, but I think you're right,
- 19:03Speaker 1: you know, I mean, we could be seeing some major
- 19:06Speaker 1: shakeups here.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and I I think it's going to be a
- 19:12Speaker 2: really interesting rest of the off season. Yeah, yeah, I
- 19:15Speaker 2: do think that Howie potentially has something up his sleep,
- 19:18Speaker 2: because really they have not done a whole lot now
- 19:20Speaker 2: I know, they said they weren't going to do a
- 19:22Speaker 2: whole lot via free agency and stuff, but I could
- 19:26Speaker 2: see Aj Brown maybe getting moved as a way to
- 19:29Speaker 2: trade up, or they talk with a team within the
- 19:32Speaker 2: first round and there's a handshake agreement in place where
- 19:35Speaker 2: there's a team that takes a player that nobody kind
- 19:40Speaker 2: of expected them to take, maybe a team that needs
- 19:43Speaker 2: a wide receiver and they go offensive linemen, and that
- 19:48Speaker 2: could point to more things. Because the draft is in
- 19:50Speaker 2: what like a week.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a week.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So we'll see.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Yeah, we will. Let us know what you're thinking, folks,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and if you're watching on YouTube, i'd love it if
- 20:00Speaker 1: you would leave a comment below, let us know what
- 20:03Speaker 1: you're thinking about this Eagles wide receiver room and what
- 20:06Speaker 1: may happen in the future. We'd love to hear from
- 20:08Speaker 1: you in the comments below on YouTube. All right, well,
- 20:12Speaker 1: let's move now to the Phillies bullpen. Josh Jose Alvarado.
- 20:20Speaker 1: There's a big problem there. We've got Jonathan Boland. He
- 20:23Speaker 1: is now on the injured list. Not great for what
- 20:26Speaker 1: is the biggest strength on this team this season, which
- 20:30Speaker 1: has been the bullpen. And I'm just really really concerned,
- 20:35Speaker 1: really concerned at this point that the best part of
- 20:38Speaker 1: this team is not going to be able to perform
- 20:40Speaker 1: the way that we had hoped that they were going
- 20:42Speaker 1: to perform, because the Bats certainly aren't doing what they
- 20:44Speaker 1: need to do. They have been extremely cold over the
- 20:48Speaker 1: course of the past few weeks. I'm just baffled. I
- 20:52Speaker 1: am baffled by this team because on paper they are
- 20:54Speaker 1: a damn good team. They are, but we're just not
- 20:59Speaker 1: seeing it. Where do you think the disconnect is here?
- 21:03Speaker 1: And and look, I mean Alvarado, Yes, he had a
- 21:06Speaker 1: suspension last year. I know, I just asked you a question.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I start going off here on something, but really Alvarado
- 21:12Speaker 1: had his his suspension last year, and now again with
- 21:15Speaker 1: Jonathan Bolan, who was who was pitching very well out
- 21:18Speaker 1: of the bullpen in recent weeks, now on now on
- 21:21Speaker 1: the injured list, I just I feel like I feel
- 21:26Speaker 1: like they've somehow just hurt hurt there, like they they've
- 21:31Speaker 1: if the team was was a body, their achilles is
- 21:33Speaker 1: just completely injured and they're not They're just not able
- 21:36Speaker 1: to get up. They're just not able to get up
- 21:38Speaker 1: from it and recover. There's all these little things that
- 21:41Speaker 1: are happening game after game. And I hate saying it
- 21:46Speaker 1: like this because we got a month of baseball that's
- 21:48Speaker 1: been not even a month of baseball that's been played.
- 21:50Speaker 1: But I'm feeling the concern. I'll say that I'm feeling
- 21:53Speaker 1: the concern. I'm not one hundred percent concerned, but I'm
- 21:57Speaker 1: feeling the concern here at this point. Is that is
- 21:59Speaker 1: that where you're at?
- 22:00Speaker 2: Well, look, I'm here to stop all this Alvarado slander.
- 22:04Speaker 2: I mean, tonight he pitched one scoreless inning, bringing his
- 22:08Speaker 2: cra down to ten point five. Let's just cool the
- 22:12Speaker 2: brakes on this whole Alvarado conversation. And we got to
- 22:15Speaker 2: see that powerhouse bullpen arm of Dylan Moore, which is
- 22:20Speaker 2: always good when you have position players throwing, that means
- 22:23Speaker 2: the game's going real well for you. Yeah, here's my
- 22:28Speaker 2: thing with the bullpen, Jeff. When the questions were asked
- 22:33Speaker 2: to both Rob Thompson and Dave Dombrowski about running it back,
- 22:38Speaker 2: they almost scoffed at the idea, and they highlighted how
- 22:42Speaker 2: much different the bullpen is. Okay, so if the bullpen
- 22:45Speaker 2: is completely different, then you've already drawn attention to it
- 22:48Speaker 2: right on paper. I agree with you, this was supposed
- 22:52Speaker 2: to be a tremendous strength. I'm a little optimistic with
- 22:56Speaker 2: the bullpen, and this is that last year, this time
- 22:58Speaker 2: it was the same thingull pen was struggling. They got
- 23:02Speaker 2: it all together and it turned out to be a
- 23:04Speaker 2: huge strength. Yeah, I have a larger concern. One of
- 23:10Speaker 2: my biggest concerns with the pitching staff is Rob Thompson's
- 23:14Speaker 2: ability to use them. He regularly pulls the starter too early,
- 23:20Speaker 2: leaves the starter in for one too many batters. When
- 23:23Speaker 2: I'm going or whoever i'm watching, why is this person
- 23:26Speaker 2: still in there? I like Rob Thompson. I think he's
- 23:31Speaker 2: a good guy. But I have never seen a team
- 23:35Speaker 2: so bad fundamentally. I mean, it is infuriating watching them
- 23:42Speaker 2: try to run the basis. I mean, Jeff, I think
- 23:44Speaker 2: this is kind of what you're getting at. Like they
- 23:47Speaker 2: had yet another error tonight, Yes, I mean they can.
- 23:50Speaker 2: It is almost a miracle when they don't an error.
- 23:55Speaker 2: And this is a professional baseball club. In fact, many
- 23:58Speaker 2: nights they have multiple error Yeah, and that's not base
- 24:01Speaker 2: running mishaps. Like I'm so I love Bryce Harper, but
- 24:07Speaker 2: I am so tired and ending a single up the
- 24:11Speaker 2: middle and trying to go for two. Why dude, you're
- 24:15Speaker 2: in your thirties, Like at some point, just come to
- 24:20Speaker 2: grips with the fact that you're not going to run
- 24:23Speaker 2: like a four, three forty. Just like take the single
- 24:26Speaker 2: and move on. Randon Marsh the pop up from this weekend,
- 24:31Speaker 2: I'm I still just like, periodically, will go did he
- 24:35Speaker 2: really run all the way to second with a ball
- 24:39Speaker 2: popped up in the air and stay at second base?
- 24:43Speaker 2: What are we doing? It's overall I have optimism with
- 24:50Speaker 2: the bullpen can turn around the rest of the team.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I am very concerned with because this is the easy
- 24:57Speaker 2: part of the schedule. Jeff, like they were supposed to
- 24:59Speaker 2: get out of the gates hot. Yeah, it ain't getting easier.
- 25:03Speaker 2: They've played their easy part. So the rest of the season,
- 25:06Speaker 2: which is long, is going to be tough. And jesus
- 25:10Speaker 2: Lozardo signs this huge, huge contract. He goes five and
- 25:14Speaker 2: third tonight with eight earned runs, nine total given up.
- 25:19Speaker 2: His ERA is seven point ninety four for the season.
- 25:23Speaker 2: We're now a couple starts in where it's not looking
- 25:26Speaker 2: at a ballooned number with a starter and going, oh
- 25:28Speaker 2: that that's just one or two starts. No, the majority
- 25:31Speaker 2: of his starts has been bad. I don't know if
- 25:35Speaker 2: he's trying to pitch like just earn that contract. He
- 25:39Speaker 2: needs to figure it out, because this is not good.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not good. And we're certainly going to be
- 25:46Speaker 1: talking about this team a lot more, and we've got
- 25:48Speaker 1: a lot more to get through on this podcast platform
- 25:52Speaker 1: and show excuse me this week here, but we are
- 25:56Speaker 1: going to take a break and when we get back,
- 25:57Speaker 1: we're gonna get getting into some Philadelphia Union talk. They
- 26:01Speaker 1: absolutely stink. We're talking about a lot of stinkiness here,
- 26:04Speaker 1: before we get to the good stuff, folks. Okay, it's
- 26:06Speaker 1: stinkiness in the world of Philly sports first and then
- 26:09Speaker 1: it's good stuff. So we're gonna take a break and
- 26:11Speaker 1: we're gonna be back in just a bit, all right,
- 26:15Speaker 1: We are back and to now get into, as I
- 26:20Speaker 1: said right before the break, some stinkiness the Philadelphia Union,
- 26:25Speaker 1: who are fourteenth in the Eastern Conference. They've only won
- 26:29Speaker 1: one game thus far, they've lost six. It is a
- 26:34Speaker 1: slog to watch this team. And as somebody who over
- 26:38Speaker 1: the past couple of years has just really started getting
- 26:40Speaker 1: into soccer, my god, for me, buddy, it's been an
- 26:44Speaker 1: up and down experience thus far after last season, what
- 26:49Speaker 1: this team looked like. And look, you were on the
- 26:52Speaker 1: podcast a little while ago, Well, you know the beginning
- 26:55Speaker 1: of the year when we were talking about this team
- 26:59Speaker 1: and initially you know how they could potentially take next
- 27:02Speaker 1: steps forward after last year, even though they lost a
- 27:06Speaker 1: ton of talent, and we're seeing, we're seeing what happens
- 27:10Speaker 1: to a team when you lose really good talent, when
- 27:14Speaker 1: a team does not decide to try their best to
- 27:17Speaker 1: keep that talent that did well for them the previous year.
- 27:21Speaker 1: This is what's happening now. This team is a freaking disgrace.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know if you have any
- 27:26Speaker 1: other words in language for it either.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I'll be a little bit kinder, Okay, sometimes I do
- 27:33Speaker 2: still have to talk to players in different things. Okay,
- 27:37Speaker 2: I think I think the best way in all honesty
- 27:40Speaker 2: to explain the season is one of the matches in
- 27:44Speaker 2: post matched the conversation about there were two clubs they
- 27:48Speaker 2: were talking about, and one of which was Philadelphia. In
- 27:50Speaker 2: terms of which are you more concerned with, Yeah, and Jeff,
- 27:53Speaker 2: they absolutely lost a ton of talent, yes, But what
- 27:56Speaker 2: they were talking about with this is that it doesn't
- 28:00Speaker 2: even look like they're playing a Carnal system like they
- 28:05Speaker 2: It really at times looks like you're watching a JV
- 28:09Speaker 2: high school team because they just they don't look like
- 28:15Speaker 2: they know what they're doing. Sometimes when they look like
- 28:19Speaker 2: they know what they're doing, they look scared to do
- 28:21Speaker 2: anything with it. They just turn down alone for Cavin Sullivan,
- 28:29Speaker 2: who they're not really playing.
- 28:30Speaker 4: So I don't I'm just trying to figure out where
- 28:39Speaker 4: they're going to go and what they're going to do
- 28:41Speaker 4: because they just they have no scoring ability whatsoever.
- 28:47Speaker 2: The fact that the match that they won they scored
- 28:49Speaker 2: two goals was just like I couldn't believe it. They
- 28:56Speaker 2: are just really disorganized, And that's the that I would use.
- 29:01Speaker 2: They're just disorganized all around. And I would even say Carnell,
- 29:07Speaker 2: even in interviews, is just disorganized. His thoughts are just
- 29:12Speaker 2: kind of all over the place, and he'll answer a
- 29:16Speaker 2: question and it's like you just spent ninety minutes on
- 29:20Speaker 2: the pitch and this is your takeaway. Okay, Yeah, maybe
- 29:25Speaker 2: now we know why they're so they're so disorganized. I
- 29:30Speaker 2: I really don't think Carnell knew what he was getting
- 29:36Speaker 2: into when he came here. And I really think the
- 29:40Speaker 2: last year, because expectations were relatively low and the team
- 29:44Speaker 2: did so well, it's a disservice to him, and I
- 29:47Speaker 2: feel bad.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And a lot of that was because we didn't call Barribo.
- 29:50Speaker 1: A lot of it was because of Barribo.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well more than that, I mean, yeah, the whole
- 29:56Speaker 2: really what it was, to be honest, Jeff, Yes, Ti
- 29:58Speaker 2: Berribo did well for that, But really what it was
- 30:02Speaker 2: was Carnell was able to find a way to fix
- 30:04Speaker 2: the back end h that had been such a disaster
- 30:08Speaker 2: the year before. That's really what it was. They stopped
- 30:12Speaker 2: letting people just run free. Well that's not the case
- 30:15Speaker 2: this year, and it's really, uh, it's really disheartening because
- 30:22Speaker 2: I don't really see a way out of this, and
- 30:26Speaker 2: I feel like Carnell is going to be the one
- 30:28Speaker 2: that pays the price, and I don't know how fair
- 30:31Speaker 2: that is when there isn't really the return on investment
- 30:36Speaker 2: on ownership's part.
- 30:37Speaker 1: That's a that's a constant theme whenever we talk about
- 30:39Speaker 1: this team, Buddy, whenever you come on and we're talking
- 30:42Speaker 1: Philadelphia Union, what other MLS teams are doing, it's just
- 30:47Speaker 1: it's it's the constant theme of they're just not investing
- 30:51Speaker 1: in the team. And last last year was just this
- 30:53Speaker 1: one off where you did have Bribo and you had
- 30:58Speaker 1: other players who were exceeding expectations, and because of that,
- 31:03Speaker 1: you're thinking, Okay, Carneals in his first year as head
- 31:06Speaker 1: coach was really getting this team put in a good
- 31:09Speaker 1: position for the future. And now with the lack of investment,
- 31:13Speaker 1: continued investment, just letting that talent go, it's kind of
- 31:18Speaker 1: just back to that same old theme. It's back to
- 31:21Speaker 1: the same old theme. And we really don't have much
- 31:24Speaker 1: to hang our hats on at all here. Well, I
- 31:27Speaker 1: mean maybe except for the fact that it was reported
- 31:29Speaker 1: on in Philadelphia soccernow dot com that one of the
- 31:32Speaker 1: longest tenured players on the Union rosters staying in Chester.
- 31:36Speaker 1: They extended defender Nathan Harriel's contract. Thank goodness, Thank good
- 31:43Speaker 1: I don't want to talk bad about anybody. I don't
- 31:45Speaker 1: want to talk bad but really it's just like I
- 31:48Speaker 1: because I visited the site every now and then, when
- 31:50Speaker 1: I saw that a few days ago, I was like,
- 31:52Speaker 1: I was like, oh, great, okay.
- 31:54Speaker 2: It's just he's inconsistent. That's any player who with any
- 32:00Speaker 2: form of consistency and consistently, well, they're going to sell
- 32:06Speaker 2: and so the only players that are going to sign
- 32:09Speaker 2: their long term are because he's so old that and
- 32:14Speaker 2: no one's like, I'm a huge Bedoya guy. He's old
- 32:19Speaker 2: and nobody's gonna want to sign him, right, and he's
- 32:22Speaker 2: basically like a coach out there or an example of
- 32:27Speaker 2: Harriel where he's just so inconsistent they're not going to
- 32:30Speaker 2: be able to move him for anything. So frankly, is
- 32:33Speaker 2: probably better to sign him than lose him for nothing
- 32:37Speaker 2: because he does contribute like there was. It was no
- 32:39Speaker 2: biggie to lose mikel Uwa because mikel Uwa just didn't
- 32:43Speaker 2: really contribute a whole lot, so he lost him for
- 32:45Speaker 2: free whatever. In fact, he was probably a benefit because
- 32:50Speaker 2: they don't have to worry about the wages he was
- 32:52Speaker 2: making each week. So with Harry Ol he doesn't make
- 32:56Speaker 2: that much. So I don't know, it's just yes, it's
- 33:02Speaker 2: really I feel for Pirates fans and Raise fans.
- 33:08Speaker 1: This is how it feels.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean this is literally it.
- 33:14Speaker 2: And thankfully the MLS season is much shorter than the
- 33:17Speaker 2: baseball season, right.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yep. Well folks, if you are a Philadelphia Union fan,
- 33:24Speaker 1: we'd love to hear from you. Leave it in the
- 33:27Speaker 1: comments below. What are your thoughts on this Union team?
- 33:30Speaker 1: Do you think they stink as well? And I know
- 33:32Speaker 1: you'll say yes. Give us some engagement down there in
- 33:36Speaker 1: the comments. So all right, really quick, before we get
- 33:38Speaker 1: into our Flyers preview, we're gonna take one more break,
- 33:41Speaker 1: but then we're gonna get into what we may be
- 33:43Speaker 1: seeing in the postseason from the Philadelphia Flyers as they
- 33:46Speaker 1: are going to be taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins coming
- 33:49Speaker 1: up this weekend. Stick around, We're gonna get into that
- 33:52Speaker 1: in just a bit. All right, back with our good
- 33:56Speaker 1: friend Josh Schuster, who's filling in for the guys this week.
- 33:59Speaker 1: As we are, i'm memorating thirteen years. I love it, Josh,
- 34:02Speaker 1: that you're here for the thirteenth thirteenth anniversary show. I
- 34:06Speaker 1: love it all right. Our Flyers season preview here. I
- 34:12Speaker 1: gotta tell you, I was once saying tank this season
- 34:18Speaker 1: right before the Olympic break. Just just start losing games,
- 34:22Speaker 1: Just stop making us go through the pain, the suffering,
- 34:27Speaker 1: so we can at least try to look forward to
- 34:30Speaker 1: some sort of asset and then the Olympic break happens.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Then this team comes back seemingly with an attitude and
- 34:40Speaker 1: a fire within them, a little luck here and there
- 34:44Speaker 1: every now and again, And guess what, in hockey, folks,
- 34:47Speaker 1: every good team needs a little bit of luck every
- 34:49Speaker 1: now and again. That happens. But I mean, this is
- 34:54Speaker 1: the first ninety point season for the Philadelphia Flyers since
- 34:58Speaker 1: the twenty seventeen to two twenty eighteen season. They're ending
- 35:03Speaker 1: this long postseason drought, and honestly, I could not be happier.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Our good friend Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com
- 35:11Speaker 1: was on the show a few weeks ago. Yeah, I mean,
- 35:13Speaker 1: she was great, and she really she got me back
- 35:17Speaker 1: into this groove of thinking, you know what, this team
- 35:21Speaker 1: could really make some waves toward the latter part of
- 35:24Speaker 1: the season. And damn it, she was right, and she
- 35:28Speaker 1: has great analysis, and she got me back into the fold.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So Kelly, I thank you for that. But Josh, I'm
- 35:36Speaker 1: genuinely excited for this and we're we're gonna kind of
- 35:38Speaker 1: get into some of the details about what we may
- 35:41Speaker 1: be seeing, and we all should be excited, even the
- 35:44Speaker 1: Flyers contingency that are continuously negative and the you know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: the Negadelphia type of Flyers fans within Flyers Nation, even
- 35:55Speaker 1: those folks should be excited about where this team is
- 35:59Speaker 1: at right now here in April, We're going to be
- 36:02Speaker 1: seeing spring hockey, my friend and and I'm here for it.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, And you know I'll put myself in
- 36:10Speaker 2: that that more Nagadelphia aspect when it comes to Flyers.
- 36:14Speaker 2: So and this isn't a take away from the season.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I and I will people will probably comment on this.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Danny Brier and Jonesy still have not sold me. I
- 36:28Speaker 2: think when you had my buddy Dan Eshean, I was
- 36:31Speaker 2: surprised he didn't get into it. They they are not going.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I refuse to call what they did to rebuild. I
- 36:41Speaker 2: call it a retool. They made a number of decisions that,
- 36:44Speaker 2: in my opinion, rebuilding teams do not make with extensions.
- 36:48Speaker 2: They handed out of work. T K. I can keep
- 36:51Speaker 2: going on, but what I will say is I think
- 36:57Speaker 2: one area that Danny Brier has won me over is
- 37:00Speaker 2: for so long my friends and I who are big
- 37:03Speaker 2: Flyers fans, have all said it would be so nice
- 37:06Speaker 2: to have a GM who's creative with trades. I don't
- 37:11Speaker 2: think you can look at a single trade that Danny
- 37:13Speaker 2: Brier has made and say that that's a bad trade.
- 37:16Speaker 2: That's a bad trade. And he's gotten creative with things,
- 37:20Speaker 2: and he's taken on reclamation projects. You know. The one
- 37:24Speaker 2: trade I really like that I think is going to
- 37:27Speaker 2: pay huge dividends, and I had said before we started
- 37:29Speaker 2: recording that I was at the game last night, is
- 37:33Speaker 2: the Jirachech trade. I know a lot of people complain
- 37:37Speaker 2: about his skating, but I'll tell you what. He can
- 37:41Speaker 2: skate at the NHL level. I mean, I'm not a
- 37:44Speaker 2: professional scout or anything, but he is extremely defensively responsible
- 37:49Speaker 2: and he can actually move the puck. We actually have
- 37:53Speaker 2: a puck moving defense, which is wonderful.
- 37:58Speaker 1: We're going to get that right al by the way
- 38:00Speaker 1: we thought we were going to get that in Ryan Ellis, Right.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Jeff, I can't talk about Ryan Ellis because he's one
- 38:05Speaker 2: of my all time favorite defensemen. The Flyers traded him.
- 38:08Speaker 2: I was in the Flyers shop at the Wells Fargo
- 38:12Speaker 2: Center and almost bought a Ryan Ellis jersey, and my
- 38:15Speaker 2: friend talked me out of it, and it was one
- 38:17Speaker 2: of the best decisions I've made. Was not by Ryan
- 38:21Speaker 2: Elis Jersey because I don't know what it would have
- 38:23Speaker 2: done with it. But anyway, I think this team is
- 38:27Speaker 2: really my buddy I went with last night John. I
- 38:32Speaker 2: had said to him there was something after they clinched
- 38:37Speaker 2: I haven't seen before from a locker room where it was,
- 38:42Speaker 2: you know, like sometimes people are like celebrating because they
- 38:45Speaker 2: kind of like have to. Like they were just so
- 38:48Speaker 2: they were genuinely happy for each other. It wasn't if
- 38:52Speaker 2: they were happy, they were happy for each other. And
- 38:55Speaker 2: I just looked at and said, there's something different about
- 38:57Speaker 2: this team. And so you know, says, you know, will
- 39:01Speaker 2: the Flyers move on the night they clinched? And this
- 39:04Speaker 2: is coming from the negative guy. I said. Flyers in
- 39:09Speaker 2: five or six against Pittsburgh Phitcksburgh doesn't have goaltending, they're old.
- 39:14Speaker 2: One of the things they've really added is speed and
- 39:17Speaker 2: portermartone is just I have wanted so long for a
- 39:25Speaker 2: player that is shoot first, but also a player that
- 39:30Speaker 2: is willing to stand in front of the net. And Jeff,
- 39:33Speaker 2: that kid shoots the puck and what he does immediately
- 39:37Speaker 2: is go in front of the net. And I'm like,
- 39:40Speaker 2: I I can't believe it. There is a Philadelphia Flyer
- 39:45Speaker 2: in front of the net trying to screen the opposing goalie.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, it's crazy.
- 39:51Speaker 2: But I think I think what makes this kind of
- 39:54Speaker 2: wrap this question up. I think what makes this season
- 39:57Speaker 2: so special is while they did make the playoffs like
- 40:02Speaker 2: six or seventy years ago, the reality is is that
- 40:05Speaker 2: that was COVID. There was no playoffs in Philadelphia, right,
- 40:10Speaker 2: It wasn't even a real year, right basically in according
- 40:13Speaker 2: to sports like we don't count the Lakers NBA championship,
- 40:17Speaker 2: I don't really count that as a real sports year.
- 40:19Speaker 2: So you're looking at almost a decade. But I said
- 40:22Speaker 2: to my buddy John last night, there are two places
- 40:26Speaker 2: in the NHL playoffs that I do not want to go.
- 40:29Speaker 2: The second place is Philadelphia, and the first place is
- 40:32Speaker 2: Buffalo because Buffalo is a crazy hockey market. They hadn't
- 40:36Speaker 2: been in the playoffs for fifteen years. That place is
- 40:39Speaker 2: going to be a powder keg. But Philly's the second one.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Like at the game last night, it was an exhibition game,
- 40:46Speaker 2: and Jeff, the place was almost entirely sold out. There
- 40:50Speaker 2: was almost no empty seats, and we couldn't believe it.
- 40:53Speaker 2: With the Phillies playing across the street. I mean, it
- 40:56Speaker 2: was just it was insane and the atmosphere was wonderful.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Well they won, like it was just wild. Anyway, I
- 41:03Speaker 2: do think that they are going to win a playoff round.
- 41:05Speaker 2: All that is saying they'll win a playoffs.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Yes, know, we were going to close with that. We
- 41:10Speaker 1: still are going to close with that if they are
- 41:12Speaker 1: actually going to get through this first round. But I
- 41:14Speaker 1: thought it was really interesting, really quick before we get
- 41:16Speaker 1: into goaltending, because the goaltending I think is going to
- 41:18Speaker 1: be an important aspect of this series. I love what
- 41:21Speaker 1: you said when you saw the guys just coming together.
- 41:25Speaker 1: It wasn't they were It wasn't just because they were
- 41:28Speaker 1: doing it because yes, we're going to the playoffs. They
- 41:31Speaker 1: were genuinely excited for each other, like you said. And
- 41:35Speaker 1: that is how I sum up this Flyer's journey this season,
- 41:41Speaker 1: where it was the guys looking after each other, looking
- 41:46Speaker 1: forward to playing with each other, and in fact, I
- 41:48Speaker 1: think growing with each other in a lot of ways.
- 41:52Speaker 1: The Flyers journey this season. I think when we look
- 41:55Speaker 1: back five years from now, ten years from now on
- 41:58Speaker 1: the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six Flyer season, it
- 42:02Speaker 1: is going to be seen as a remarkable journey where
- 42:06Speaker 1: these young younger kids have actually gone in terms of
- 42:11Speaker 1: not just their development. Not just their development, it is
- 42:15Speaker 1: how they met a moment in a critical period of
- 42:19Speaker 1: time in the season, and that is the critical part
- 42:23Speaker 1: of the journey. I think that's really going to be
- 42:24Speaker 1: talked about for years to come. But you mentioned the
- 42:28Speaker 1: goaltending as well, and I think that's going to be
- 42:30Speaker 1: such a critical part of this. You know, the battle
- 42:33Speaker 1: of Pennsylvania here, Flyers and Penguins. I mean, let's again
- 42:39Speaker 1: let's get into the goalies here, because we know that
- 42:41Speaker 1: Dan Vladar has been able to do wonders throughout this season.
- 42:47Speaker 1: He's twenty nine fourteen and seven, that's his record in
- 42:50Speaker 1: fifty two games, with a two point four to two
- 42:52Speaker 1: goals against average. Now Stuart Skinner for the Penguins, he's
- 42:56Speaker 1: twenty three seventeen and nine with a two point eight
- 43:00Speaker 1: seven goals against average. You know, when you look at
- 43:04Speaker 1: the analytics, when you look at the stats with both
- 43:06Speaker 1: of these goalies, dan Vladar seems to really have the
- 43:09Speaker 1: upper hand of course, heading into this first round of
- 43:12Speaker 1: the playoffs, and I think at the end of the day.
- 43:15Speaker 1: That is what's gonna matter. That's what's gonna matter. We
- 43:18Speaker 1: have better goaltending. The Flyers have better goaltending. I shouldn't
- 43:21Speaker 1: say we, I'm not on the ice. Flyers have better goaltending.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I think that is what's really going to set these
- 43:28Speaker 1: two teams apart, Dan Vladar and Stuart Skinner. One is
- 43:32Speaker 1: better than the other. And you know, bring it, Bring it,
- 43:36Speaker 1: Sidney Crosby, because Dan Vladar is going to stop your ass.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I you know. My my friend and I last
- 43:43Speaker 2: night got into a conversation as we were walking back
- 43:45Speaker 2: to the car. What do you do with Fvlidar? Do
- 43:49Speaker 2: you approach them with an extension? My answer is yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 2: absolutely if I were them, There's two things I'm doing
- 43:57Speaker 2: this offseason. Ladars seems to really like playing in Philadelphia.
- 44:03Speaker 2: He said it, He said it again last night, he
- 44:05Speaker 2: said it again two nights ago. He's never been a starter,
- 44:11Speaker 2: and I think if you were to approach him with
- 44:13Speaker 2: a three or four year deal for six million dollars,
- 44:18Speaker 2: he may consider doing it. And even if he's not
- 44:23Speaker 2: an elite goalie, he's still I would imagine, going to
- 44:26Speaker 2: be a decent starting goaltender at six million dollars is
- 44:29Speaker 2: kind of a bargain. And the second thing that I
- 44:32Speaker 2: would do is I would approach him and say, Okay,
- 44:34Speaker 2: Arizon obviously did not work this year as the backup.
- 44:38Speaker 2: We need a legitimate backup. Who do you want us
- 44:41Speaker 2: to go get? Give us some of your friends in
- 44:43Speaker 2: the league, and let's put a tandem together that we
- 44:47Speaker 2: can have here for a couple of years that you
- 44:49Speaker 2: really like, that you really enjoy, that you work well with.
- 44:53Speaker 2: And I think the way the players rally around him
- 44:58Speaker 2: is just there's two p people in my opinion, that
- 45:01Speaker 2: the team rallies around, and both of them were additions
- 45:05Speaker 2: this offseason. One is Ladaar and one is Secrets. Both
- 45:10Speaker 2: of them are the culture setters in the locker room.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Now that I have many many thoughts on TK and
- 45:19Speaker 2: many many thoughts on Coots, we'll save that for another time,
- 45:23Speaker 2: but these two guys are critical to this team, not
- 45:28Speaker 2: just this year, but moving forward. And I think Valdar,
- 45:32Speaker 2: here's the thing with Skinner. You're either going to get
- 45:36Speaker 2: an elite goalie or you're going to get a backup.
- 45:40Speaker 2: There is no one in between. With them, I don't
- 45:44Speaker 2: think Pittsburgh has the defense or the defensive structure as
- 45:48Speaker 2: well to protect Skinner like the Flyers could possibly do
- 45:53Speaker 2: if Ladar is struggling. That's my personal opinion. I have
- 45:57Speaker 2: orange colored glasses what ever, But I think they have
- 46:02Speaker 2: a clear edge in goalie.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Absolutely they do. But look, I mean we have to
- 46:07Speaker 1: also be cognizant of what the Flyers weaknesses are heading
- 46:12Speaker 1: into this as well, and the Pens are going to
- 46:15Speaker 1: try to exploit those weaknesses. I mean there's inconsistent finishing
- 46:19Speaker 1: with this team on a consistent bait. I mean the
- 46:21Speaker 1: power play reliability, I mean their power power play has
- 46:24Speaker 1: been pretty streaky in in a series where special teams
- 46:29Speaker 1: often decides outcomes prolonged cold stretches, and we know this
- 46:34Speaker 1: team has gone through them every now and again. Could
- 46:37Speaker 1: could swing the momentum towards Pittsburgh, which you know, power
- 46:43Speaker 1: play weakness, you know every now and again that we
- 46:46Speaker 1: have seen could could be could be an Achilles heel
- 46:49Speaker 1: for this team. I don't know what are you thinking
- 46:51Speaker 1: in terms of the weaknesses here for the Flyers.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the Flyers have two massive weaknesses. They
- 47:00Speaker 2: do not have a number one center, yeah, and they
- 47:02Speaker 2: do not have number one defenseman. Now, Danny and Jonesy
- 47:10Speaker 2: have talked about the summer of twenty twenty six, So
- 47:13Speaker 2: in my opinion, they have this summer to get one
- 47:16Speaker 2: of those two, and they will both fully earn my trust.
- 47:20Speaker 2: The problem when you're going up against Pittsburgh is the
- 47:23Speaker 2: biggest is down the middle, and so you are taking
- 47:29Speaker 2: your absolute biggest weakness going up there against their absolute
- 47:34Speaker 2: biggest strength. But it's vice versa as well. For Pittsburgh,
- 47:38Speaker 2: the biggest weakness is probably a net and along the wings, yeah,
- 47:42Speaker 2: and that is the Flyer's biggest strength. And so really
- 47:46Speaker 2: I'm not so concerned about the power play because I
- 47:49Speaker 2: do think it's going to be better than it has
- 47:54Speaker 2: been with Porter Marton. The concern I have is at center.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Zegre does not do very good in the face off circle.
- 48:03Speaker 2: When Devorak is your best face off guy. He's really
- 48:08Speaker 2: a number three C. That's not ideal. And you're gonna
- 48:12Speaker 2: be going up against Crosby. We'll see what happens. But
- 48:15Speaker 2: I think number one C and number one in defenseman
- 48:19Speaker 2: are clear problems on this team. And I'm not saying
- 48:25Speaker 2: for the record, I'm not saying the Flyers don't have
- 48:29Speaker 2: depth at both positions. The Flyers have a couple of
- 48:35Speaker 2: really good number two defensemen. They do in Sanhaim and York.
- 48:38Speaker 2: They are really great number two guys with centers. The
- 48:43Speaker 2: Flyers have accumulated a bunch of really great number three
- 48:47Speaker 2: and number four centers, and Zigris is probably best on
- 48:51Speaker 2: the wing. Yes, they have depth. I'm not saying that
- 48:55Speaker 2: it's just when you're looking at high end talent.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I think this is one of those series and I
- 49:02Speaker 1: don't know if it's just based on the history of
- 49:04Speaker 1: these two teams, it's the intangibles as well. We can
- 49:08Speaker 1: go through all the analytics, we can go through all
- 49:10Speaker 1: the five on five analytics, we can go through the
- 49:14Speaker 1: defense based analytics. But I mean that this rivalry that
- 49:20Speaker 1: really does run deep. And I know it's been some
- 49:22Speaker 1: time between since these teams have really been going head
- 49:26Speaker 1: to head in a matchup such as this, But you know,
- 49:31Speaker 1: I wonder if the history of these teams really matters
- 49:34Speaker 1: for the players that are on the ice today. And
- 49:36Speaker 1: I also wonder from an intangibles perspective, for example, like
- 49:41Speaker 1: which team is going to handle momentum swings better in
- 49:45Speaker 1: a hostile playoff environment, Like, that's kind of what I'm
- 49:49Speaker 1: thinking about in terms of how momentum is going to
- 49:51Speaker 1: shift night by night or even in game. Those intangibles
- 49:57Speaker 1: are really going to be on my mind when this
- 49:59Speaker 1: series he starts here. Have you thought about that at all,
- 50:03Speaker 1: because I think I think that's an important part of
- 50:05Speaker 1: what this series is going to be.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you know, you would be an absolute
- 50:12Speaker 2: dope if you said that Pittsburgh doesn't have the advantage
- 50:16Speaker 2: in terms of veteran experience, right, absolutely, that's just stupid. Yeah,
- 50:21Speaker 2: But what I will say is that for the last
- 50:24Speaker 2: month and a half, the Flyers had been playing playoff hockey, yes,
- 50:28Speaker 2: because they've been fighting for their life. Pittsburgh has not,
- 50:32Speaker 2: And so I don't know. I the moment doesn't seem
- 50:40Speaker 2: too big for this young team, but I'm sorry if
- 50:44Speaker 2: it did, they haven't shown it. And for all the
- 50:49Speaker 2: complaints I have about Coots, he was at the podium
- 50:53Speaker 2: and he was talking about what he was saying to
- 50:56Speaker 2: these young guys, and he was saying to them, if
- 50:59Speaker 2: you thought the last month and a half this building
- 51:03Speaker 2: was crazy, he said, you have not experienced anything like
- 51:07Speaker 2: the playoffs here, And so I don't think that this
- 51:12Speaker 2: young team is viewing this series as overwhelming. I think
- 51:22Speaker 2: they're excited and to me.
- 51:24Speaker 1: And it was the Carolina I think it was the
- 51:27Speaker 1: Carolina game that really got that into their head.
- 51:30Speaker 2: But even Jeff. Last night, Montreal had their A team
- 51:34Speaker 2: out against the Flyers beat team. The Flyers won four
- 51:37Speaker 2: to you. Like my buddy John and I were like, well,
- 51:41Speaker 2: it would be cool to be in a Flyers game.
- 51:43Speaker 2: There's no way they're going to win this game. And
- 51:45Speaker 2: I have an undefeated Chemo team and in win our
- 51:48Speaker 2: classic Jersey Born they have never lost. And I told John,
- 51:51Speaker 2: I said, this is the true test. It worked. The
- 51:57Speaker 2: biggest thing to remember is there are two players who
- 52:00Speaker 2: have been extremely hot the last seven games, Meetchkoff and Marton,
- 52:06Speaker 2: and both of these individuals only ever wanted to play
- 52:10Speaker 2: for the Flyers. Martone grew up a Flyers fan. He
- 52:14Speaker 2: hates the Penguins and Mietchikoff. He told teams, I'm not
- 52:18Speaker 2: going to anywhere but Philadelphia, which is the reason why
- 52:20Speaker 2: he fell to them. And if you sign me, I'm
- 52:22Speaker 2: not coming over to America. I will come over. If
- 52:25Speaker 2: the Flyers signed me, you should have seen Mietchikov last night.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I mean, he is just he is in this group
- 52:32Speaker 2: since personally, I think the front office forced Takin to
- 52:36Speaker 2: play him back on the right side. That's a whole
- 52:38Speaker 2: different story. He is just rightfully that we can get
- 52:43Speaker 2: into that whole thing. That's conversation for another time. He
- 52:48Speaker 2: is just in another world. And so it does not
- 52:50Speaker 2: look like for their two hottest and arguably best players,
- 52:55Speaker 2: the moment doesn't look too big for them. And Tippitt
- 52:57Speaker 2: has taken such strides this year. I would say he's
- 53:00Speaker 2: been the third best. In the last seven to ten games,
- 53:04Speaker 2: he has taken such strides. I'm not worried about the
- 53:09Speaker 2: moment being too big for him.
- 53:10Speaker 1: I'm not sure. There's just so much amazing energy with
- 53:16Speaker 1: this team here. And look, you know we talked about it.
- 53:19Speaker 1: There are holes on this team, you know, having that
- 53:22Speaker 1: true center. You know, they're just though stocked with young talent.
- 53:28Speaker 1: You mentioned Meachkav, I mean Ziegris Martone, Barkie Forrester now
- 53:33Speaker 1: back as well. I mean, it's been so nice to
- 53:36Speaker 1: see him on the ice, and you know, of course
- 53:39Speaker 1: we're at that moment where it's like we're gonna put
- 53:41Speaker 1: off talking about the future to another day, which is
- 53:45Speaker 1: just great because at this point, year after year after year,
- 53:49Speaker 1: we're talking about the offseason, we're talking about if they're
- 53:51Speaker 1: going to keep the coach, we're talking about what the
- 53:54Speaker 1: draft is going to look like. I think you said it.
- 53:58Speaker 1: You think this team is going to advance to the
- 54:00Speaker 1: second round in five or six games. My thought is
- 54:04Speaker 1: that it's gonna be six games and the Flyers are
- 54:06Speaker 1: gonna take it. Maybe it is a Homer type of
- 54:09Speaker 1: prediction on my part. I think six games is absolutely
- 54:13Speaker 1: fair for this Flyers team, where they're at the energy
- 54:17Speaker 1: that they have, how they have finished out the regular season.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I think Flyers in six and they get to the
- 54:24Speaker 1: second round of the Stanley Cup layoffs. That's my thought here, man.
- 54:28Speaker 2: I agree. And so I gotta tell you last night
- 54:31Speaker 2: at the game, we were we were walking out and
- 54:34Speaker 2: there's this nine year old kid and he's, you know,
- 54:37Speaker 2: all deck down and Flyers stuff, and he's just walking
- 54:40Speaker 2: up to strangers. He's like, we can take the Penguins
- 54:42Speaker 2: a day of the week. We can take the Penguins
- 54:44Speaker 2: any in the week.
- 54:46Speaker 5: And I thought back in that moment, I was like,
- 54:50Speaker 5: the Flyers Penguins rivalry has fallen off so much as
- 54:55Speaker 5: the last four to five years. Like Jeff, when I
- 54:58Speaker 5: graduated college and the graduation gift I got to myself
- 55:03Speaker 5: got for myself was centerized tickets to the night before
- 55:07Speaker 5: graduation Flyers Penguins, And it was like Sidney Crosby wanted
- 55:14Speaker 5: in a shootout, and I will I cannot stand demand
- 55:19Speaker 5: for that reason, Yes, because I was out in Langster
- 55:21Speaker 5: at the time, so I'm driving all the way out anyway.
- 55:25Speaker 2: But there was something so special about those games. But
- 55:29Speaker 2: even during the regular season this year, we hadn't really
- 55:31Speaker 2: had that. And there's a whole generation of Fires fans
- 55:34Speaker 2: starting with my three year old eight and who has
- 55:37Speaker 2: no idea what true sports hatred for an organization is,
- 55:43Speaker 2: and they're going to experience it with the Penguins, and
- 55:46Speaker 2: it's just going to be You're gonna see Sidney Crosby
- 55:49Speaker 2: and it's going to be a hate that face, right.
- 55:51Speaker 2: I think it's just there's so much the fact that
- 55:54Speaker 2: it's the Penguins, I think is just such. It's such
- 55:58Speaker 2: poetry season. Even if the Flyers don't win, it is
- 56:04Speaker 2: such poetry that they play the Penguins in the first round.
- 56:08Speaker 2: To just put a bow on a great season. Yeah,
- 56:12Speaker 2: to move forward and bring back that hated rivalry.
- 56:16Speaker 1: What a fantastic way to end this podcast, dude, putting
- 56:19Speaker 1: a bow on it. Putting a bow on it, folks,
- 56:23Speaker 1: this isn't scripted here, and oh, my gosh, what a
- 56:27Speaker 1: great way to end this Flyers postseason preview show. My gosh,
- 56:34Speaker 1: it's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun to watch.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Let us know, if you're watching on YouTube, how you
- 56:39Speaker 1: think this series is going to go. We'd love to
- 56:41Speaker 1: get those comments going here on this podcast show. And
- 56:44Speaker 1: I want to take this opportunity to thank my buddy
- 56:47Speaker 1: Josh Schuster here, buddy, seriously, whether it's Eagles postgame shows
- 56:50Speaker 1: during the course of the season, right now, you've jumped on,
- 56:53Speaker 1: you've talked, you've talked about the Phillies with us, you've
- 56:56Speaker 1: talked about the union, other Eagles talk here there. It's
- 57:01Speaker 1: always great having you on. Seriously. I appreciate you taking
- 57:03Speaker 1: the time to step in for the guys when they
- 57:05Speaker 1: had some other commitments that they were not able to
- 57:07Speaker 1: get out of. And uh, it's it's always great talking
- 57:10Speaker 1: to you.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Man.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Let's let's let's keep this going okay, Philly Sports Forever,
- 57:14Speaker 1: all right.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Hey, I agree, and Jeff, it's an escape, right, do
