Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beacham.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Stand by for good news.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: All week we have walked back toward the little small schoolhouse of early America.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: We have seen that education began with a biblical command to teach the children.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: We have seen that early literacy was tied to Scripture.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We have seen that the God spoken of in early American public life was not an empty idea, but the God understood through the Bible.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And we have seen that the First Amendment was written to protect religious liberty, not to erase faith from the soul of the nation.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So the question now is not only what happened back then.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The question is what will we do now?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: We cannot merely complain that schools have changed.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: We must ask where their homes have been faithful.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: We cannot only say the Bible was once in the schoolroom, we must ask where the Bible is opened in our living rooms.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We cannot only speak of what the founders believed, we must ask what our children see us believe.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Children learn from words, but they also learn from example.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: They notice what we honor, what we ignore, what we fear, what we laugh at and what we love.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Knowledge is a powerful thing, but knowledge without wisdom can become dangerous.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: A child may learn technology and still not know truth.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: A child may learn history and still not know humility.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: A child may learn science and still not know the Creator.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: One of the great turning points came when the biblical account of creation was pushed aside and Darwin's theory of evolution was increasingly treated as the only acceptable explanation of human origin.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Genesis 1 and 1 says in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Genesis 127 says mankind was made in the image of God.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: But when children are taught to begin with man instead of God, their understanding of identity, purpose, morality, and accountability begins to change.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 9 and 10 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Information can fill the mind, but only God can rightly form the heart.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Looking back, we might wonder why the whole Christian nation did not rise up and say, No, these children belong first to God.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: But the sad truth is this, while that battle was entering the schools, compromise was also entering many churches.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: The pulpit grew quieter.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: The people grew accustomed to less scripture, and little by little what should have been resisted was accepted.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: That is why this is not merely a school problem.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It is a spiritual problem.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: If the church forgets Genesis, the child may soon forget the Creator.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: If the home grows silent, the ungodly teacher will speak louder.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And if we allow the ungodly to teach our children that there is no God, then send them into colleges that reinforce the same belief.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: We should not be surprised when they come home confused about truth, identity, morality, and purpose.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: But the blame cannot rest only on the schools.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Paul warned in 2 Timothy 4, 3 and 4 that the time would come when people would not endure sound doctrine, but would heap to themselves teachers having itching ears, when pulpits tickle ears instead of preaching the word, when churches trade scripture for popularity, when homes stay silent, the child is left surrounded by voices that do not begin with God.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: This is not a call to anger, it is a call to responsibility.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: The schoolhouse may have changed, but the mission has not.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: If others will not tell them where freedom came from, we must tell them.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: If others will not remind them that they are made in the image of God, we must remind them with courage.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And now the good news.
