- 0:00Speaker 1: A Sunday afternoon, Husky's returned to Gamble to tangle with
- 0:03Speaker 1: their route forty four rivals. Providence College. Radio coverage begins
- 0:07Speaker 1: with the Hardhault Group count down a Tip one thirty
- 0:09Speaker 1: here along the Yukon Sports Network, Varsity Network app intavarsitynetwork
- 0:12Speaker 1: dot com. We're joined now by John Fanna, Fox Sports.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Big East Guy covers the conference on a regular daily basis. John,
- 0:20Speaker 1: this has been an interesting year already. You know a
- 0:23Speaker 1: lot of Big East fans are kind of trying to
- 0:26Speaker 1: figure out who is the best team in his conference
- 0:28Speaker 1: and if there are any more than say, three NCAA
- 0:32Speaker 1: eligible teams. It's been a strange start, hasn't it for
- 0:35Speaker 1: this conference?
- 0:37Speaker 2: It has been Mike, it's crazy with you. Happy New Year.
- 0:40Speaker 2: The conference has not met its expectations that it has
- 0:44Speaker 2: every single year, which is to get at least half
- 0:46Speaker 2: of its teams into the NCAA tournament, and you have
- 0:50Speaker 2: to package results together in non conference. Now, this is
- 0:52Speaker 2: where it's a credit to Connecticut because they know how
- 0:55Speaker 2: to schedule, and they schedule an elite level and they're
- 1:00Speaker 2: obviously undefeated on the mainland. But that's why you go
- 1:03Speaker 2: to the Maule Invitational too, because you're going to challenge
- 1:06Speaker 2: yourself and so if you win those games, obviously it
- 1:10Speaker 2: furthers your resume. But by going out there and challenging yourself,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you come back to the mainland and look what they
- 1:18Speaker 2: did against Baylor, against Texas, against Gonzaga. They were ready
- 1:22Speaker 2: for those teams. They showed how battle tests they were.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Marquette the same way. You know, the teams that know
- 1:28Speaker 2: how to schedule are the ones who I think have
- 1:31Speaker 2: put themselves in a good to great spot, and you
- 1:36Speaker 2: caught in Marquette are in great spots. The Golden Eagles
- 1:39Speaker 2: you have to give an immense amount of credit to
- 1:41Speaker 2: lose Tyler Kohlik and Olso the gadaro and be twelve
- 1:45Speaker 2: and two right now. They want at Maryland. They beat Purdue,
- 1:50Speaker 2: they've put together, beat Wisconsin, who had a terroristic start
- 1:54Speaker 2: of the season, and Cam Jones right now is one
- 1:58Speaker 2: of the best players in college back. So then it's
- 2:02Speaker 2: Saint John's who hasn't put together the great win yet.
- 2:05Speaker 2: They're gonna have to do some more work in conference play.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But after that, it is one big mystery in this league.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Are there candidates? Sure? Creighton's won, they beat Kansas, They
- 2:15Speaker 2: just beat Saint John's and Greg McDermott's so so steady.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Villanova's won six of seven, you know, don't sleep on them.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Eric Dixon's been terrific and Georgetown doesn't have some massively
- 2:25Speaker 2: bad loss, but they better stack wins in conference to
- 2:28Speaker 2: have even a chance. And it's it's nice to even
- 2:31Speaker 2: be saying the name Georgetown when we're talking about this discussion,
- 2:33Speaker 2: because it feels like it's been eon since we've said that.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But the fact is, the Big East is not the
- 2:39Speaker 2: level that it's used to being at in terms of
- 2:42Speaker 2: depth of bids. There probably have to be some looks
- 2:45Speaker 2: in the mirror, if you will, from some of these
- 2:47Speaker 2: programs in the off season, But in the here and now,
- 2:49Speaker 2: this is what it is, and Yukon is the king
- 2:52Speaker 2: until somebody takes their crown. And the Huskies right now
- 2:56Speaker 2: they sure look the part of a back to back
- 2:58Speaker 2: reigning national champion, in a reigning Big East champion.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, the the Georgetown conversation is an interesting one because
- 3:07Speaker 1: it coolly went there a couple of years ago with
- 3:09Speaker 1: you know, Patrick Ewing couldn't get it done struggling there.
- 3:12Speaker 1: They've won some games and I'm just gonna ask you
- 3:15Speaker 1: this week is kind of important, isn't it to Georgetown
- 3:17Speaker 1: of Villanova because they welcome Yukon to play the Huskies
- 3:22Speaker 1: next week coming up. I think these are real barometer
- 3:25Speaker 1: games for those two schools because if they were able
- 3:28Speaker 1: to win and knock off Yukon, they kind of elevate
- 3:32Speaker 1: their stature, and that's pretty important to do that early January.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, Georgetown, next week they've got Marquette, Yukon, and then
- 3:42Speaker 2: Saint John's, so that right there is the money stretch.
- 3:46Speaker 2: You know, they go back to back to back, so
- 3:49Speaker 2: you've got to you got to get at least one
- 3:51Speaker 2: of those. I'm not saying all three, but you better
- 3:53Speaker 2: find a way to move the needle in at least one.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And you're right, like, that's just it with the Big
- 4:00Speaker 2: East is you got a bunch of teams that are
- 4:01Speaker 2: probably hovering around the bubble. So when they face Connecticut,
- 4:06Speaker 2: as if Yukon has enough of a target on its back,
- 4:09Speaker 2: they got the bigging target in the world. Like, you're
- 4:12Speaker 2: always ready to play yu Kon and you can typically
- 4:16Speaker 2: still beat you. But the other side of it is, now,
- 4:19Speaker 2: not only do you want to beat them. You got
- 4:22Speaker 2: to salvage your season in your NCAA tournament hopes, which
- 4:25Speaker 2: is the name of the game for these programs, and
- 4:28Speaker 2: so for Georgetown. It is an interesting story. Cooley in
- 4:32Speaker 2: year two, you thought his team would make a leap.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I'll be honest with you. I didn't have them being
- 4:38Speaker 2: where they are right now with only a couple loss
- 4:41Speaker 2: on the season and only taking two non conference losses.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Thomas Sorber is writing the thicke of things as is
- 4:48Speaker 2: one of the top freshmen and he and Liam McNeely
- 4:50Speaker 2: are in that Big East Freshman of the Year race.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Jayden Knapps, Malik mac the TCU transfer Micah Peevee was
- 4:58Speaker 2: a money pick up for Ed Cooley.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah, John fantas with us. We'll be back in just
- 5:02Speaker 1: a moment. We can continue on the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 5:05Speaker 1: Coaches Show from Learfield
