- 0:07Trent tonight with you until 2 battle on the bottom of the hour
- 0:10Matt Poston's heartland college sports on the Big 12 trends
- 0:13plays of the day circus sports sponsor those Let's get to the
- 0:16cap man. He joins us talk Chicago sports.
- 0:19He joins us each and every Wednesday at this time and he's
- 0:22back with us. How are you Capper?
- 0:25Doing awesome, how you doing? Doing well.
- 0:27I'm a Blue Jays fan doing really well.
- 0:29Oh, there you go, back to 22. Indeed it is.
- 0:32Let's start obviously with the Bears cap disappointing
- 0:35Baltimore without the quarterback Jackson with a
- 0:39really bad defence that have been struggling going in.
- 0:42I I thought that the Bears could obviously win that football
- 0:45game. They were on a bit of a they
- 0:47were on a nice run going into it.
- 0:49What went wrong? Cap was and what?
- 0:51Whatever went wrong? Is it fixable?
- 0:55It's definitely fixable. It's when you first two
- 0:58possessions, you go down the field, you get to the inside the
- 1:0110 and you have to settle for field goals.
- 1:05I said to my son at that point we're in trouble because you
- 1:08should have been up 14 nothing. You've got to put those away.
- 1:11Certainly 10 nothing. You got to get one and it's 6
- 1:14nothing. They score and they take the
- 1:17lead. And I thought we're in some
- 1:19trouble here. I didn't think Caleb was bad.
- 1:21I didn't think he was, you know, great thought he was, he was OK.
- 1:26He was good in spots. This throw to DJ Moore at the
- 1:30end, it's one of the most sensational throws I've ever
- 1:33watched. And if anyone didn't see it,
- 1:35just pull the tape up of that throw and find it all over
- 1:38Social. I mean, he got blasted and he
- 1:41put it right in his hands to throw to Rome that he dropped on
- 1:44the sideline #1 receivers catch that football.
- 1:48They just do to Mark Chase is catching that.
- 1:51But Rome has had his share of drops.
- 1:53He's got to be a whole lot better.
- 1:56And then that defense got better because they got rope on back.
- 1:58And that's the first team All Pro linebacker.
- 2:01So and then you let Tyler Huntley get comfortable.
- 2:04He made some good throws. He was able to beat you with his
- 2:07legs 53 yards on the ground. And in the end, he threw a
- 2:12terrible interception. So while I thought he played OK
- 2:16football, Caleb, that interception, that cannot happen
- 2:20ever. Stevenson is banged up.
- 2:23We'll see about his available this week.
- 2:25Obviously they've been playing without Javon Johnson for a long
- 2:28time, Jalen Johnson for a long time.
- 2:30You just go on and on this defensive backfield.
- 2:32They've been able to get interceptions for some
- 2:34turnovers, but overall that defensive backfield is
- 2:37struggling. Is a reality though that they
- 2:39can get healthy and at least get back to a competent level?
- 2:42Or is just this kind of their reality?
- 2:44They need to force turnovers to be even an OK defense.
- 2:48What are we without takeaways? What are we bad?
- 2:51Because when you get takeaways, you're a good football team.
- 2:54But without takeaways, you're missing your top four quarters.
- 2:58You're missing Jalen Tyler Gordon, Tyreke Stevenson and
- 3:02Terrell Smith, who got injured in the preseason Taurus patellar
- 3:06tendon. He's done for the year.
- 3:08So what are you without takeaways?
- 3:10They did make a roster move today.
- 3:12They signed like Dennis Rodman of the NFL.
- 3:16See Nick, CJ, Gardner, Johnson to a deal.
- 3:19So he's going to be with them. He's already on the active
- 3:22roster. We'll see that.
- 3:24You need bodies, experienced bodies back there.
- 3:27But they have got to get Kyler Gordon back off IR.
- 3:31This will be his second week. He misses.
- 3:34He'll miss two more, the Giants game and then I think the Viking
- 3:38game and then he'll be OK. So, so we'll see how this goes.
- 3:45They they're a good enough football team.
- 3:48They should beat Cincinnati this week.
- 3:50Yeah, and then the Giants, although the Giants are better
- 3:52with dart. No scataboo, obviously.
- 3:54Minnesota I think is circling the drain, and Pittsburgh
- 3:57doesn't look like they're great shakes before Black Friday at
- 4:00Philadelphia, which obviously would be tough.
- 4:02Cap, I know there's a lot of football left to be played, but
- 4:05does is the magic #10 to be comfortably into the playoffs as
- 4:10a wild card? 9 obviously.
- 4:13I guess yes, it could happen, but 10 probably gets you in in
- 4:16the NFC. 10 should get you in in the NFC.
- 4:19NFC is not great Now it's not. Is there one team you'd bet your
- 4:24paycheck? No, no, I don't think.
- 4:26Maybe. No, no, it's not.
- 4:28I watched. The Eagles aren't great.
- 4:30They're good football. Team Maybe it's Detroit.
- 4:32So maybe, maybe that's also the Detroit team that got rocked in
- 4:38Green Bay one. But I do think they're the best
- 4:41team in the NFC, maybe the best team in the NFL.
- 4:44So leave them to the side. Why can't you get a wild card
- 4:47spot? Why?
- 4:49Got to get work done and certainly got to start this
- 4:51week. Maybe without Flacco of four
- 4:53cents an hang. On a second, that's news to me
- 4:55without Flacco. Possibility of him?
- 4:57He's still banged up. Flacco's up in the air because
- 5:00he's got an AC joint sprain in his shoulder.
- 5:03He's got no mobility. If he can't throw, they're not
- 5:06going to put him out there. Back to Browning.
- 5:07Back to Browning, that would be the the way that that would play
- 5:11out cap. One of the things that is
- 5:13frustrating and there's a lot of frustrating things watching this
- 5:16team year after year, but this year has been their inability
- 5:20with the ball in the red zone to punch it in for touchdowns,
- 5:23settling for field goals. And a lot of part of it is too
- 5:26is the penalties inside the red zone, which is just bewildering.
- 5:29But this is also a very penalized team overall.
- 5:32Is there anything that you can point to, what these struggles
- 5:35are, why they're struggling so much to get into the end zone
- 5:38once they get to the red zone? Well, I don't think they trust
- 5:41Caleb in the red zone and not throw a pick, even though he
- 5:44doesn't turn it over a lot because they run the ball and
- 5:47believe the second most of any team in the NFL in the red zone.
- 5:52So it tells me they don't trust the quarterback enough to let
- 5:55him throw in the red zone. They're probably going to have
- 5:58to start too because the running game is not good enough and that
- 6:01all the penalties, they're second most penalized his team
- 6:03in the NFL. They've got 20 plus pre snap
- 6:06penalties, 4th most in the NFL. Those are unacceptable.
- 6:11Joe Toonies of two time all pro first team the last two years.
- 6:15He can't jump and false start. He just can't.
- 6:18And then the official is also got to be better because the
- 6:22biggest play of the game was the first down.
- 6:26It would turn into a first down, a catch by the Andre Hopkins
- 6:29late. He grabs the defensive back by
- 6:32the face man, drags him away so he can get space and even JJ
- 6:39Watt, who I thought did a really good he's really.
- 6:41Good. Yeah, he's really.
- 6:42Good. Yeah, he came back 2 plays later
- 6:44and said you got to see this, that's a penalty every time and
- 6:47they never called. It no, no, exactly what the play
- 6:50you're referring to cap. I don't bet props, but if I if I
- 6:54did going into it, I thought swift would have had a bigger
- 6:56day, especially with the Ravens. Their their defense had not been
- 7:00good. Swift was stacked up
- 7:02back-to-back 100 plus games. How did they shut him down?
- 7:06I was surprised by that. Yeah, they played well up front.
- 7:09You got to give them credit, they did.
- 7:11And getting Roquan back was a huge addition.
- 7:15Yeah, he's really good in the run game.
- 7:17Really good. The fire drill to get Cairo
- 7:21Santos out there for a long field goal attempt at the end of
- 7:24the half. He tries to be nuts and it's
- 7:26nothing personally against him. But when we see kicker after
- 7:30kicker after kicker in this league being able to bomb 60
- 7:33yarders with no problem, they got this little guy up there and
- 7:36and ducks snorting it from 48 yards.
- 7:38It just can't they fight a guy with a big leg.
- 7:40It drives me nuts. Well, they've got Jake Moody on
- 7:43the practice squad. He has a bigger leg, but he's
- 7:46nowhere near as accurate. Cairo Santos the last three
- 7:50seasons, 21 of 2650 and beyond. However, 55 and beyond, he's not
- 7:57very good. And the problem with that kick
- 7:59the other day, it's called a hurricane kick, is Caleb took a
- 8:03terrible intentional grounding penalty.
- 8:06Well, instead of it being a 48 yard kick, it's a 58 yard kick.
- 8:11And that was a problem. That's 1/2.
- 8:15He slid on his run and stayed in bounds and didn't get out of
- 8:18bounds. You have to use your final time
- 8:20out. And now the problem is you can't
- 8:23stop the clock. It's 4th down.
- 8:25You can't spike it. So you got to run everyone out
- 8:28there like a fire drill. Well, they did not have time to
- 8:30get the kicking ball. You're allowed to use your own
- 8:34kicking ball, which goes usually about on average 3 yards
- 8:38farther. They got to use the regular
- 8:41ball. They don't have time to really
- 8:43get set. You see, Cairo's not really
- 8:45measuring his steps, he's guesstimating and it came up 3
- 8:49yards short, so it was a perfect storm of crap against them.
- 8:54You mentioned earlier in our conversation, oh doomsday and
- 8:56he's got to make that catch as a wide receiver one.
- 8:59What kind of year is he having cap?
- 9:01Are they satisfied with his his progress from his rookie
- 9:04campaign number says trending in the Yeah, I was going to say go
- 9:07ahead. Yeah, Rome's making progress.
- 9:10He's a really good player. But every game he has one drop
- 9:13where you're like, dude, if you want to get paid as a number
- 9:16one, you got to catch that. Like Justin Jefferson before he
- 9:21got hurt, Malik Neighbors, Jamar Chase, those guys are catching
- 9:27Puka Nakua, Those guys are making those catches.
- 9:31Just about every time Rome has won a game where you look at him
- 9:34and go, dude, you got to catch the football.
- 9:37So I listened to you from time to time, you guys over in
- 9:40Chicago when it's Bears content and I know you guys got plenty
- 9:44of crazies. I mean, plenty of people to call
- 9:46in. What has been the discourse
- 9:49though this week? I mean, I hear these things
- 9:51about Beijing. It's time for Beijing.
- 9:53And, and I just can't believe it.
- 9:56Is there a growing contingent? I mean, is there a portion of
- 9:59the fan base, a significant portion of the fan base that's
- 10:01already ready to check out on Caleb Williams?
- 10:04No, it's just the they get frustrated with him, but then
- 10:10Ben Johnson comes out and says, I watched the tape.
- 10:13He was better than I thought he might have been in game.
- 10:17There were plays that were there to be made.
- 10:19There are also mistakes plenty that interception, like Olen
- 10:23Kreutz broke the tape down and said, I thought he played, you
- 10:26know, a pretty decent football game, But it's all wiped away by
- 10:30one terrible interception. And what concerned me is he goes
- 10:34to the podium and said, yeah, that was the right read.
- 10:37I just made a bad throw. And then the head coaches asked.
- 10:40He goes, no, you take the check down every time.
- 10:43Next question, like you have Kyle Manung got wide open check
- 10:47down. He could have literally crawled
- 10:50to the first down. He tries to fit it in between
- 10:53two guys. You're pit throwing 4 yards deep
- 10:56in your own end zone. You have to protect that like
- 10:58you're that's your child. You cannot turn the football
- 11:01over there. David Kaplan joining us.
- 11:04Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors the Cap Man on a weekly basis.
- 11:07CAP We're a couple of weeks away from the hot, hot stove,
- 11:10starting to warm up at least a little bit.
- 11:14What are you hearing, Cap? Obviously a lot of Cubs fans in
- 11:16our market now throughout the state as we broadcast live in a
- 11:20number of affiliates. What are you hearing when it
- 11:22comes to the Cubs? Dylan C seems like he's on their
- 11:25radar. I don't know.
- 11:27Meaning when you watch CC, you get 4 innings start, three of
- 11:30them looks like Cy Young, the last just like can't get anybody
- 11:34out. What are you hearing as far as
- 11:36rumours? Who's who?
- 11:38Potentially who could wear a Cubs uniform next year and who
- 11:41might not? I mean, I keep hearing that
- 11:44they're they're not going to be heavy players for Kyle Tucker.
- 11:48We'll find out if that's true. But if you sign Tucker, what are
- 11:53you doing though? And Casey, you didn't want to
- 11:54train him at the deadline. So are you moving him?
- 11:58I think they'll probably move on from Tucker and then put that
- 12:02money into pitching, whether that's Dylan Cease for Amber
- 12:05Valdez. There's a kid out of Japan who's
- 12:08really good who's 27. They have got to get a #1
- 12:11starter. You cannot count that.
- 12:13Justin Steele's coming back from major arm surgery is going to be
- 12:16that guy. Cannot count on that.
- 12:19What do we know? If he comes back, that's great.
- 12:22We know you got a good one, a good young one in Kate Horton
- 12:25had the unfortunate injury at the end of the season.
- 12:28What do we know about his rehab and the anticipation of what
- 12:31he's going to be next season? Still a young guy.
- 12:33And do you go into the air expecting, hey, we're going to
- 12:36get 180 innings out of this dude?
- 12:39Yeah, he's healthy, he's ready to go.
- 12:40He would have pitched had they beaten the Brewers in the last
- 12:43game of the DS. He's good, he's good to go.
- 12:47He's the rookie of the year from Sporting News.
- 12:50We'll find out when the World Series over if he gets MLB one.
- 12:54But that guy will be able to throw.
- 12:56I would imagine 16170. He should be your number one
- 13:00guy. And then Jackson Wiggins coming
- 13:03from AAA. He should be in this rotation
- 13:06like Cave was last year mid-May. So you should add 1 starter.
- 13:12You should have a really good rotation.
- 13:13You mentioned Justin Steele, is mid-May a more realistic target
- 13:17for him? When?
- 13:19When are they thinking? mid-May.
- 13:20Late before the all? * in the cold, right?
- 13:25I'd be shocked, right, if he's back pitching when it's, you
- 13:29know, 37° at Wrigley in April. No shot.
- 13:33What about? I do think June, I think June 1
- 13:36is when he comes. Back in Managua with the team or
- 13:39not? Wow.
- 13:42If you tell me they're going to sign $180 million pitcher, I'm
- 13:46going to say no. OK, if they're not going to do
- 13:48that, I'll say yes. Fascinating stuff.
- 13:52Anything else on baseball wise, Trent?
- 13:54Petro Armstrong, is it an important year for him to see?
- 13:57Is there another level? He had that ridiculous right
- 14:00before the All Star break. He was as hot as anybody in
- 14:02baseball after a slow start to the season, ripped off 6-7 weeks
- 14:06of just incredible baseball. And then I don't regress, maybe
- 14:10back to the mean. Is this the year we're going to
- 14:12find out if this guy is super stardom or a really fun player
- 14:15to watch? And that's kind of what you get
- 14:17out of PCA. I think if he's who I think he
- 14:21is, and I know him, he's a great kid.
- 14:24He's going to make adjustments to the adjustments they made.
- 14:29Is he going to be a 30 Homer guy?
- 14:30Again, I can't tell you that. I think he's more of a 2223 home
- 14:35run guy, Gold Glove outfielder, 30 steals.
- 14:38That's who I think he is. They tried to sign him in the
- 14:41offseason cap. Are they going to try again
- 14:44during the season? They tried to sign him, I should
- 14:46say. They did they tried to get him
- 14:48for 75,000,000. Not all guaranteed.
- 14:51I think he he was he was smart and not take it.
- 14:54I think he gets a deal done in the one 25150 range.
- 14:59Last thing, Connor Bedard had a hat trick last night.
- 15:03Is he starting to? He did, yeah.
- 15:05Looked like the guy they thought he was going to be when they
- 15:07drafted him number one overall. Their team is a lot more fun to
- 15:12watch. All of a sudden.
- 15:14Super exciting and you know, people are buying in, people are
- 15:18enjoying watching them. Here's a question for you.
- 15:21Bears are four and three, Bulls are three and O play tonight and
- 15:26the Blackhawks are over 500. Which one would you bet on if I
- 15:29gave you a ticket in Vegas at the win to go to the playoffs?
- 15:34I'd want one at Circa because it pays a better price per starter.
- 15:37Yes, start there. OK, we'll go with Circa.
- 15:39I'll go with Derek Stevens. I don't think they're, I don't
- 15:43think the I would take the, I would take the Bears to win it
- 15:47all to no, to make the playoffs, to make the playoffs.
- 15:50Just to make the playoffs. To make the playoffs, I'm going
- 15:52with the Blackhawks just because it's hockey and weird things
- 15:55seem to happen more in hockey. Yeah, how about you, Cap?
- 15:58If I had to bet today, I would take the bears.
- 16:00But they'd go Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, in that order.
- 16:04Yep, I'm with. You 3 and O for the Bulls.
- 16:06Anything to get excited about or beat the Pistons, Magic, Hawks.
- 16:09Let's slow down. Yeah, they play tonight against
- 16:11the Kings. That's the Sacramento Bulls
- 16:14because they're bringing back Damar and Zach Levine.
- 16:17We'll see how it goes. Kapra, good stuff, buddy.
- 16:20Talk to you next week. Thank you, David Kaplan.
- 16:22You guys have a great Wednesday. Yep.
- 16:24See you buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 16:25David Kaplan ESPN 1000 and CAPS YouTube channel which continues
- 16:31to blow up Centurion stone of Iowa.

- 16:41Well, you might be in the market for a project with inside the
- 16:45house, outside the house needle stonework either manufactured or
- 16:49natural stone. Centurion Stones got the most
- 16:52when it comes to Centurion stone.

- 17:14Moines Centurion stone of Iowa back to the Bears for just a
- 17:21second. TC is 10, your magic number I
- 17:26probably 10 and seven you're in maybe is A7.
- 17:29Why you envisioned? This I kind of want to, because
- 17:32here's their next Well, the Baltimore game should have been
- 17:35put in the wing column, in my opinion.
- 17:39Cincinnati Giants, Vikings and Steelers 3 and 1.
- 17:43The Chicago Bears. Those Bears.
- 17:45Are going to go 3 and 1. But the Giants are good, but
- 17:49Scataboo is gone. Sure.
- 17:50Still got Tyrone Tracy. He's solid.
- 17:53Yeah, I'd rather have scataboo. Sure.
- 17:54Tracy's nice. Yeah, Tracy's having I.
- 17:56Mean what's her running back worth 1/2 point?
- 17:58Maybe you know, and I did not know the Flacco news.
- 18:02So that that makes that win more likely at Minnesota.
- 18:05Minnesota's not good. Right, it's still Rd.
- 18:07Game and it's still it's, it's very tough.
- 18:09And Pittsburgh's kind of 6-7 sorry, by the way.
- 18:14You got to stop. I know I do, but let me just say
- 18:16so dictionary.com comes up with a word of the year. 6-7 is the
- 18:21word of the year. I deal with this with my 6 year
- 18:25old and now I deal with. Your 66.
- 18:27Year old Oh man. But the but the Steelers are
- 18:31kind of so so. They are, yes.
- 18:35So all right, let's play this game.
- 18:37To get to 10. They get to 3 and 1.
- 18:40In the stretch, so now there are seven wins and then it's Black
- 18:45Friday. Throttling.
- 18:47And then it's at Green Bay. Double throttle.
- 18:50And home to Cleveland. There's a win.
- 18:52There's 8 and home to Green Bay and at San Francisco and home to
- 18:59the Lions drafting 15th overall. Your Chicago Bears.
- 19:04Time for a keyword. Head to KX and o.com right now.

- 19:36I got you covered taking it up to the top of the hour before
- 19:39Sean and Lucas take over the airwaves here on the Iowa Sports
- 19:43Radio Network. Before we bring in Matt Postings
- 19:45and talk some Big 12, take a look at the football side of
- 19:48things and of course a little basketball as the season is
- 19:51right around the corner. Little housekeeping for you Ken.
- 19:55Before he left, he made a major mistake and I heard from all of
- 19:58you during the break. The keyword for this hour is
- 20:01dollar. Dollar@kx&o.com your chance to
- 20:05win $1000 dollarkx&o.com give you an opportunity to win.
- 20:10Let's do it while Kens away. That would be even better.
- 20:12We welcome it right now. Matt Postons, Heartland College
- 20:15Sports as we look around the Big 12, as we continue throughout
- 20:19the course of this season. And Matt, good to talk with you
- 20:22once again. Told you last week, I've been
- 20:24calling this thing Plinko as it pertains to football.
- 20:26It just you don't know what you're going to get week in and
- 20:29week out and I still don't think we know.
- 20:31Maybe the most impressive thing though, is the one that we saw
- 20:33right here in our state is BYU coming into Ames after the
- 20:37rivalry win against Utah and getting that one.
- 20:40I haven't been able to wrap my arms completely around this BYU
- 20:44team. I guess obviously we have to do
- 20:46it as they said, it ain't no right now.
- 20:48What did BYU do it and what do they continue to do to find ways
- 20:52to win week in and week out? Well, I think #1 they have found
- 20:56a really mature freshman quarterback and bareback, a
- 20:59Meyer. I, I never want to trust a true
- 21:02freshman quarterback at this level just because so many
- 21:06things can go wrong. But I think he's now up there
- 21:09among, you know, freshman quarterbacks like Jalen Hurts
- 21:12and there's a couple of others I think started their careers like
- 21:147 and O or 8 and O. He's up at that level now.
- 21:17And it's just because they've they've put him in an offense
- 21:21where he has to make decisions. He makes good decisions.
- 21:25They've been able to lean on their run game quite a bit and
- 21:28they've played impressive defense.
- 21:29And that that really that's the part that didn't surprise me.
- 21:32I knew their defense is going to be good coming into the season.
- 21:34They've got a great coordinator there.
- 21:35They had a lot of good holdovers coming back.
- 21:38I wasn't concerned about their defense at all.
- 21:39Was their offense of the true freshman quarterback at the helm
- 21:42that I was really concerned about.
- 21:44So far, they've answered every call.
- 21:45Now, LJ Morton, if I understand correctly, will not be available
- 21:49this week for their for I believe, their next game.
- 21:52I think he's going to be out for the foreseeable future.
- 21:53So that puts a Ding in the run game.
- 21:57They've got a week off, I believe, until they play Texas
- 21:59tax. They've got some time to heal
- 22:01up. But you know, going into Ames,
- 22:03especially after coming off a rivalry win and not letting down
- 22:07the way a lot of teams do in that situation, very impressive
- 22:10today. So BYU sits in a very good
- 22:13position now. They're 4 remaining games in
- 22:15November as they are off this week.
- 22:17They go to Texas Tech, TCU, at home at Cincinnati, and then
- 22:21they finish up against UCF. Still, they're not home free by
- 22:25any means. All three of those first three
- 22:26games incredibly difficult. What do you think is more likely
- 22:30to happen that we get some carnage here and we're talking
- 22:32about tiebreakers and trying to figure it out or a team like BYU
- 22:36or even a Cincinnati or Houston or Texas Tech kind of some at
- 22:39least one of the team separates. Or are we going to be going to
- 22:42tiebreakers and figuring out like 6 different seven and two
- 22:45teams? I, I, I have to lean toward
- 22:48carnage in this case simply because, you know, if you look
- 22:52at how everything is kind of shaking out right now, there's a
- 22:55distinct possibility that the right teams win.
- 22:58BYU, Cincinnati, Texas Tech and Houston could all finish eight,
- 23:01one in conference play. That would require Tech to beat
- 23:04BYU and BYU to beat Cincinnati and then everybody to win the
- 23:08remaining games, including Houston.
- 23:11Houston doesn't play BYU or Cincinnati and they're only
- 23:13losses to Tech. So that would really put them at
- 23:15a disadvantage from a tiebreaker standpoint because they just,
- 23:18they're kind of in tiebreaker hell at that point.
- 23:20But it's a possibility. I, I learn more toward, you
- 23:24know, a couple of teams losing games down the stretch.
- 23:27I mean, is this, this is the time of the year last year where
- 23:29BYU was undefeated. They had their rivalry game with
- 23:32Utah in early November. I was at that game.
- 23:35They won that game by a hair and they lost the next two games.
- 23:38I'm going to bet that some point down the line, BYU and
- 23:42Cincinnati are both going to lose a game, and that's going to
- 23:45have a distinct influence on who gets to Arlington, TX.
- 23:50Tech, to me is still the best position because they have
- 23:53tiebreakers over Houston and if they beat by BYU, they'll have a
- 23:57tiebreaker over BYU. So even if they were to lose,
- 24:00lose a game or stumble down the stretch, I think they'd still be
- 24:03OK and say three team or 14 tiebreakers.
- 24:05But I'm voting for chaos just because there's just, there's
- 24:09too many opportunities for somebody to stumble here down
- 24:12the stretch. And another team that has a
- 24:14chance to help with that chaos is Kansas State.
- 24:16You look at them, well they got 3 losses against conference
- 24:19teams, one of them a non conference game though against
- 24:22Arizona that was scheduled before Arizona joined the Big
- 24:2412. So you have that part of it.
- 24:27Would that be a bad thing though?
- 24:28I mean Kansas State is one of the more recognizable football
- 24:31brands left in this conference. However, with a loss to Army,
- 24:36losing when a lot of people are watching the opening week of the
- 24:38season, they'd be 8:00 and 4:00 to get there.
- 24:40The Big 12 and a way rooting against Kansas State, getting
- 24:43there just because you don't want a team that has some of the
- 24:46warts that they have in your conference.
- 24:47Championship game, Yeah, admittedly, I think if you're
- 24:51thinking of it from a conference perspective, you're probably
- 24:53rooting against that. I mean, any of the any of the
- 24:55teams with two losses still have a chance, Utah, Arizona State,
- 24:59Kansas State, TCU, but they all need some level of help from the
- 25:03teams above them in order to have a chance.
- 25:05And plus the tiebreakers have to go their way.
- 25:07So they're kind of at everybody else's mercy at this point.
- 25:10But if you're thinking of strictly from a perspective of,
- 25:13hey, we'd like to get our conference champion in the
- 25:15playoffs, plus one other team is not large.
- 25:19What you're really need to see is you need to see two or three
- 25:22of these teams that are, you know, undefeated or one loss in
- 25:24conference get to at least ten wins overall.
- 25:27Last year, 12 teams made the playoff.
- 25:30One was Boise State. They went in as a Group of Five
- 25:33team. If you look at the other 11
- 25:34teams, those were all power conference teams.
- 25:37They all had 10 or more wins. There was one team left out that
- 25:39was Miami. But the committee sort of set a
- 25:42precedent last year with the fact that, you know, they didn't
- 25:46include Alabama at 9:00 and 3:00, but they took other teams
- 25:49because they had 10 or 11 wins in a power conference.
- 25:52I think that still matters to the committee.
- 25:54So if you're if you're right, your mark and you want to get 2
- 25:56or more teams in the playoffs, you're rooting for, you know,
- 25:59CB, BYU or Cincinnati to get to 11 and one, Texas Tech to get to
- 26:0311 and one, even Houston to get to 11 and 1 and make the
- 26:06decisions very hard for the committee once he gets this
- 26:08election Sunday. You know, and when we kind of go
- 26:10down this road and say it is Kansas State and they win a
- 26:13championship game on top of it, there's a likelihood that there
- 26:15wouldn't be an automatic bid for the Big 12 because the American
- 26:19champion very well would be ranked ahead of Kansas State.
- 26:21I mean, that's nightmare scenario here.
- 26:24You got K State in there. They win that conference
- 26:26championship game, and then you might be on the outside looking
- 26:29in, period. And not having a playoff team.
- 26:31That would be the absolute worst of the worst.
- 26:34That would be the worst of the worst, but it would require a
- 26:37second. A Group of five conference seem
- 26:39to be higher ranked. The American is clearly the best
- 26:42group of five conference and I think that's by a wide margin.
- 26:45Their champion is going to be in with no problem.
- 26:48The question becomes is there a team in the Mount West or a team
- 26:52in the neck or a team the Sunbelt that rises to that
- 26:55level? And I really don't think there
- 26:57is. So I think the Big 12 champion
- 26:58is going to be safe. The question becomes if say it
- 27:01is Kansas State, is that team that wins the American seated
- 27:05higher than them in the in the pecking order than Kansas State.
- 27:09But I think the Big 12 champion will get in no matter what.
- 27:12And just to be clear, it's the five highest ranked conference
- 27:15champions regardless of where they are, but usually the
- 27:19powerful conferences and that one group of five conference
- 27:21with the highest ranked champion is going to get in.
- 27:24You know, the only team that potentially could maybe upset
- 27:27that would be James Madison if they could do it.
- 27:29But we're talking some crazy scenarios.
- 27:31Let's come back to reality and let's come back to this week and
- 27:33take a look at what we have in the Big 12.
- 27:35Of course, Iowa State, they get Arizona State this week.
- 27:38That is going to be an impactful game and it's going to be no Sam
- 27:41Levitt out there. It'll be Sims that'll get the
- 27:43start. Arizona State, just a completely
- 27:45different team without Levitt out there.
- 27:48They really are. And that's where I think Iowa
- 27:50State can take advantage of that.
- 27:52You know, we've we've seen, we have ample evidence of what
- 27:55Arizona State is with Sam Levitt and without Stan Levitt.
- 27:58And you're right, they are a much different team.
- 28:00I think they'll play a little bit better this time around with
- 28:02the with the new quarterback than they did the first time
- 28:05around, just because they'll have a little bit more
- 28:07experience, but you know, opportunity to take advantage of
- 28:10that playing at home. It's November.
- 28:13You know, things can sometimes get a little dicey weather wise
- 28:15in Iowa in November. That's to your advantage.
- 28:18And, and obviously for Iowa State, they need to win to get
- 28:20to a ball game. So that's what you're playing
- 28:22for right now. And I think with the the
- 28:25quarterback change without Sam Levitt, it gives them a real
- 28:28chance to kind of put their foot in the door and win that game.
- 28:30Let's jump to well talked about K State.
- 28:33I promise this is not AK State radio show, but they got Texas
- 28:36Tech here. I love the Wildcats this week.
- 28:38I think they're going to give them everything that they want.
- 28:41Starting to peek at this time in Texas Tech with the injuries
- 28:44hamming out. Wow for the year.
- 28:45We wait to see what's going to be happening at the quarterback
- 28:48spot as Morton has been banged up all season long.
- 28:51Feels like a a tough spot for the Red Raiders.
- 28:55I think it is, and you know, TCU, that's been a House of
- 28:58horrors for them for years, going to Manhattan and I think
- 29:02it's been like 8 or 9 years since they've won a game there.
- 29:04It's just so hard to win there. I've covered games there before.
- 29:08It's a great atmosphere. It's a great fan base.
- 29:10They make things very difficult on the visiting team.
- 29:14Tech has won big games in big Rd. environments.
- 29:17Utah comes immediately to mind. That was a big, big Rd. game for
- 29:20them. But, you know, Kansas State
- 29:22played an extremely good game against Kansas last week, and I
- 29:26can start seeing some things coming around, especially for
- 29:29them on the offense instead of the football that leaving to
- 29:31believe that, you know, they could really give Tech a run for
- 29:34their money. I still think Tech wins the game
- 29:36because I think they're just a tougher team than they've been
- 29:39previously. But this is not going to be some
- 29:42kind of a blowout game. This is going to be a last
- 29:43possession at a football game. Want to talk about the game?
- 29:47Cincinnati, Utah. And if you give the Bearcats a
- 29:49shot, they're a 10 point underdog out there.
- 29:51But maybe even a bigger piece. Game day being there and just
- 29:55being part of it. You know, ESPN and college game
- 29:58day has turned into SEC, you know, network programming week
- 30:01after week after week. The importance of the Big 12 to
- 30:04finally get the spotlight back on them and then talk a little
- 30:07bit about the game. Yeah.
- 30:09It is important. And I I think I hope that ESPN
- 30:13starts to think about, you know, widening that out.
- 30:15I think Reese Davis did an interview in Nashville last week
- 30:18and he was talking about like the selection process for the
- 30:21games. And, you know, that they don't
- 30:23want to get 234 weeks out. They want to kind of make that
- 30:25decision at the moment. He actually pitched the idea in
- 30:29a few weeks of going to the Battle of the Ravine down there
- 30:31in Arkansas. That is a game between Henderson
- 30:34State and Washita Baptist. Those two campuses are actually
- 30:37across the street from one another.
- 30:39Their football stadiums are across the street from one
- 30:41another and the visiting team walks from their locker room
- 30:44over to the other stadium for the game, but actually covered a
- 30:46game of Washita Baptist. It's really crazy.
- 30:48It's one of the most interesting rivalries in Division Two.
- 30:52But aside from that, there's a lot of cache that comes with
- 30:54game day being on campus. I've covered Big 12 games that
- 30:57have game day. I've done it for the the SEC.
- 30:59It's just a different kind of feel.
- 31:01I hate that this game's at like 9:15 central because it does
- 31:04kind of SAP the day. It's great when game day bleeds
- 31:07right into the game. They're on campus.
- 31:10But it's a great opportunity for for both programs to showcase
- 31:13themselves. And you know, I know Utah's the
- 31:16the the favorite in this game, but I mean, Cincinnati has
- 31:21played so well this season, especially on the defensive end,
- 31:24that I give them a really good chance of winning this game.
- 31:27Now, again, you know, like BYU, they're without their top
- 31:30running back, Evan Prior is not going to play in this game.
- 31:32And that puts them into a significant disadvantage.
- 31:34You're going to put more of the load on their quarterback,
- 31:36Brendan Soresby, and they're going to have to turn Utah over
- 31:38a little bit in terms of, you know, creating a couple of
- 31:41turnovers and getting a couple of extra possessions.
- 31:43Those are your best friends when you play Rd. games like this.
- 31:45But the biggest game Cincinnati has played since their days in
- 31:49the American when they made the playoff in 2021 under Luke
- 31:52Freckle. So I give them a chance.
- 31:54It should be a really interesting game.
- 31:55And the best part about it, you know, even though it doesn't
- 31:58bleed in from game day, it's Big 12 after dark and anything can
- 32:00happen. Talk with Matt Poston's
- 32:02Heartland College Sports, a look around the Big 12 from football
- 32:06to basketball as we are in that crossover season.
- 32:09Games begin next week and I see there's already some point
- 32:11spreads out there that are listed, including Big 12 teams.
- 32:15Arizona, 3 1/2 point underdog against Florida on Monday.
- 32:18Also, BYU laying 7 1/2 against Nova, Kansas and North Carolina
- 32:23later in the week and The Jayhawks are 1 1/2 point dog in
- 32:26that one. We know the top of the league,
- 32:28Houston, TX, Tech, Arizona, Iowa State, BYU though after what
- 32:33they did a season ago, I think surprising a lot of people,
- 32:36Richie Saunders comes back and you couple him now with AJ
- 32:39Debansta. It's going to be an exciting
- 32:41year. BYU can can they hit the heights
- 32:45though of some of those expectations?
- 32:46This is a team, do you believe that is going to be a contender
- 32:49for a regular season title that you know can make a run into
- 32:52that final game into the weekend and maybe even a Final Four?
- 32:55Is that too much hype for BYU or is it warranted at this time?
- 33:00I think they can certainly be contenders in the Big 12 for the
- 33:03regular season title and the tournament title, and I think
- 33:05there are team capable of getting to the second weekend.
- 33:08I think when we start talking about the Final Four, to me, I
- 33:11want to see the team play a few games and get into like December
- 33:14and January and see where they are, see who's injured, see
- 33:17who's playing well, see how the chemistry's come together.
- 33:20I think what's great about what they have is they have the right
- 33:23mix of returning players that understand what Kevin Young
- 33:27wants to do. From a system standpoint, you've
- 33:29got one of the best young players in the country and to
- 33:31dance there who's going to play immediately and could, you know,
- 33:33really have a significant impact on what they want to do even
- 33:37more than Demon had last year. I think a lot of folks thought
- 33:39Igor Denham was going to make a big, big impact on that program
- 33:43and he turned into a great facilitating guard, but he
- 33:46really wasn't the offensive scorer that I think a lot of
- 33:48people were expecting. Debanstah is going to be that
- 33:50kind of player. I, I think he has the potential
- 33:52to be one of the most dynamic players in the country.
- 33:55And then you've got some good role players on that team
- 33:57understand what Kevin Young wants and where they fit in.
- 34:01I, I think they've got some of the best depth in the league.
- 34:03I think they've got a terrific home environment obviously, and
- 34:07I'm interested to see how they do in some of these road and
- 34:10neutral site games up front. You know, you, you got to be
- 34:13able to win those kinds of games when you get to the NCAA
- 34:15tournament. That was a a bit of an issue for
- 34:19them last year, at least early in the year.
- 34:21But I I see them as a team that can get to the second weekend
- 34:24right now and potentially a Final Four depending upon how
- 34:28and and how they're playing at that point.
- 34:30Matt Poston's. Find them on Twitter at Poston's
- 34:33Postcard. He joins us here on Miller and
- 34:35Condon. Matt is always good catching up
- 34:37with you. Enjoy the games this weekend and
- 34:39college hoops right around the corner.
- 34:41Absolutely. Talk to you guys soon.
- 34:43That's Matt Poston's Heartland College sports Big 12 fans, it
- 34:46is a must stop for you each and every week diving in deep.
- 34:49And of course, Cyclone fans, they got you covered over there
- 34:51with Heartland College Sports. We'll take our final time out,
- 34:54come back on the other side and I will give you my picks.
- 34:58Yesterday it wasn't very good. Gave me a couple of props for
- 35:021/2 unit Mookie Betts, no home run.
- 35:04We didn't have our best performance, 2, four and one.
- 35:07We got to push with Otani under outs.
- 35:09We got a win with Bieber over outs.
- 35:11We got a win with the Blue Jays. But bets no.
- 35:14Otani stolen base, no. And O and two in college
- 35:16football. Well, as Ken likes to say,
- 35:19they're singing the national anthem somewhere.
- 35:21And I'll be betting my picks presented by Circus Sports.
- 35:23They're next. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 35:25Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent kind of back with you one
- 35:28final time. It's Miller and Condon on the
- 35:30Iowa Sports Radio Network. Shawna Lucas waiting in the
- 35:34wings. They got you covered until 5:00
- 35:36before overtime. Iowa gets you home at 6:00.
- 35:40Well, it's time for my picks of the day, presented each and
- 35:42every day by Circa Sports as we go through.
- 35:45Of course, we got baseball tonight as game 5A.
- 35:48Pivotal game five. It's nothing of it's not
- 35:51pivotal, right? When it's series, it's tied.
- 35:53It's always that. I got 3, 4 picks in that game.
- 35:57Two NBA picks tonight. Now, I looked at college
- 35:59football. After last night's absolute
- 36:01unmitigated disaster, I was going to go back to the well
- 36:03again. Thank God I couldn't get there
- 36:05because those games are brutal. So it will be a little NBA, but
- 36:09mostly World Series on the television here tonight.
- 36:12NBA. I'm grabbing the Celtics.
- 36:14They have not shot the ball well.
- 36:16They get Cleveland coming in. Something stinks about this
- 36:18line. I'm going to grab the four with
- 36:20the Celtics here and hope some of that three-point MBA variance
- 36:23goes our way and they knock down some shorts, Grab the four with
- 36:26these Celtics. Going to do the same with
- 36:28Sacramento now. It's not a great shooting team.
- 36:31He got to Mark DeRozan making his way in.
- 36:33Weren't anything, as Cappy told us a little bit earlier, those
- 36:36guys coming in from the Kings, former teammates making their
- 36:39way back to Chicago. I think Sacramento plays well.
- 36:42Still no Keegan as he works his way back from injury.
- 36:44We're going to grab the points there also and take the
- 36:47Sacramento Kings plus the five to the World Series.
- 36:51We're taking the dodgers -190 lay the price.
- 36:54And then three pitching props. You know I love my pitching
- 36:56props #1 is Savage Under 12 1/2 outs?
- 37:01That's plus one O 5. You can find out there in the
- 37:04market. And then we're going to double
- 37:05up here with Blake Snell. We're going to take Blake Snell
- 37:08both over strikeouts. That's 6 1/2 the number
- 37:11currently at Circa. You can get plus one O 5 / 6 1/2
