- 0:00I thought today I'd do an episode on getting current.
- 0:03So the diary of an addict alcoholic.
- 0:07Hey guys, welcome back to Recovering Out Loud.
- 0:09I'm your host, Anthony, and I'm an addict alcoholic.
- 0:13Getting current is important in recovery for all of us because
- 0:16it's very easy for me to put on a show and present a stage
- 0:19character in recovery and tell everybody that I'm doing fine
- 0:22because I have a year and a half, almost year and a half
- 0:25sobriety again. And I don't want you to know
- 0:28that I'm struggling. I don't want you to know that I
- 0:30have any struggles. I want you to think that I am a
- 0:33good member of recovery that is working his program and nothing
- 0:36is going wrong and everything is under control and I'm tapped in
- 0:40and all these things. This, this stage character that
- 0:43I present to the world because I want to be perceived as this
- 0:46strong, independent man who has it under control and is aware of
- 0:51his his emotions and how they affect people.
- 0:54And I am a principled man and I'm a good person, but it's
- 0:56tough. It's tough right to to practice
- 0:59integrity and to be a good person all hours of the day.
- 1:02We are not Saints. I make mistakes all the time.
- 1:05So I thought that it'd be a good idea to bring to light the
- 1:08current scenario of my life, my current circumstances.
- 1:13I always say this, but I don't have problems today.
- 1:15I have a bad perception. I see the world through a lens
- 1:20based on my defects of character at the time.
- 1:23I see the world through my lens and my old behaviors, my old
- 1:27ideas, and that doesn't serve anybody.
- 1:29So how do I shift perspective? How do I shift perception?
- 1:33How do I see things more clearer?
- 1:35How do I quiet the noise in my head so that I can pray to God
- 1:38and have all the defects removed so that when fear crops up, I
- 1:42can ask it to be removed? So that when I'm quiet, my
- 1:45mental bandwidth I I'm able to channel this creativity from a
- 1:49higher power into the solution. I'm able to get a solution when
- 1:53I'm undisturbed in quiet. So let's get into it.
- 1:56I've complained a lot this year about financial insecurity and
- 1:59paying the thousands of 10s of thousands of dollars in debt in
- 2:04my relapse bill from hotels and partying.
- 2:07Guess what? I haven't gone hungry in this
- 2:09past year. I've had heat on in my house.
- 2:11I am not getting what I want, but here's another way to look
- 2:15at it. Let's shift perspective for a
- 2:16second. This past year, having living
- 2:20paycheck to paycheck has taught me such an important, valuable
- 2:22lesson that I can't learn from reading a book.
- 2:25I have to bang my head on the wall to learn these lessons in
- 2:28my life today. And I think a lot of you can
- 2:30relate. You can tell me all these quotes
- 2:32and listen to all these podcasts, but I have to go
- 2:34through it myself. Having the financial insecurity
- 2:37has taught me how to handle my money better, how to save money,
- 2:42how to budget all these things which caused me to spin out and
- 2:47brought me down last time. There's clearly a glaring issue
- 2:50here in my life, which is I don't know how to budget.
- 2:53I don't know how to save money. I don't know how to not want
- 2:56things. I don't know how to not want to
- 2:59obtain material success. So Amir has been held up this
- 3:03past year and I've learned a lot about myself.
- 3:05I've swallowed some uncomfortable truths in working
- 3:09with a mentor and going through recovery programs and journaling
- 3:13and meditating every day. So what am I doing?
- 3:16Like I said, I'm talking to God more.
- 3:17I'm asking for fear to be removed a lot often.
- 3:20I'm asking for self will to be removed a lot often.
- 3:24Because I constantly my ego wants to come in and remember
- 3:28ego is edging God out. My ego comes in and tells me
- 3:32that I can control this on my own, I can handle it on my own.
- 3:34You're strong enough. Willpower will get you through
- 3:36this. And it has not been my
- 3:37experience. The more I rely on a power
- 3:40greater than myself, the more independent I actually become.
- 3:42It is the great juxtaposition of recovery, the great sacrifice
- 3:48that you know when you make it, things just start to work out.
- 3:51Not in my time and not the way I want them to, but they always
- 3:54work out. And the universe, God's plan, is
- 3:57always more creative than I could have ever drawn up, I
- 4:01could have ever imagined. Problems get solved when
- 4:05sometimes I need to do nothing and accept the reality of the
- 4:07situation except life as it is, and not lie to myself and tell
- 4:11me that resistance, right? It can't be this way.
- 4:14I cannot be in this financial situation.
- 4:18How can this happen, this resistance towards the truth,
- 4:22resistance towards reality, full flight from reality.
- 4:25That is my one of my problems today is that I, I just can't
- 4:28accept life on life's terms. One thing that I started doing a
- 4:31lot was I started meditating. I downloaded an app, the app is
- 4:34called waking up. It costs money, but I you can
- 4:37get a scholarship and get it for cheaper.
- 4:39I'm not sponsored by them, but I highly recommend getting some
- 4:43kind of guided meditation app if you're in recovery.
- 4:45Even if you're not in recovery, 10 minutes out of my day where I
- 4:48listen to a guy talk and tell me how to observe consciousness,
- 4:52how to sit and just be OK with silence and notice things as
- 4:56they come up. And it's not me versus
- 4:59consciousness. I am a part of consciousness.
- 5:01I am a part of reality. This, the guy honking outside,
- 5:05that is a moment in consciousness.
- 5:08It is not me observing the moment from here to there.
- 5:10There's no subject, subject, object.
- 5:13I can really get into the weeds with this one, but essentially
- 5:16it's just noticing thoughts, noticing patterns of energy in
- 5:20my body, noticing pressure and temperature and being in the now
- 5:25you want to find God, Where is God?
- 5:27God is now. May you find him now.
- 5:29That is the only place God exists.
- 5:31Power greater than myself exists within is now.
- 5:34Not when I'm experiencing calamity and spinning stories,
- 5:38projecting movies onto the world, but when I am sitting in
- 5:41quiet and aware, paying attention.
- 5:44Meditation has helped me so much.
- 5:46I can't stress enough how important it is to my recovery.
- 5:50Being able to just notice when I want to get angry at somebody,
- 5:53notice when I'm judging somebody, notice when I'm not
- 5:56telling the truth about a situation and I'm doing that
- 5:59thing again and you just laugh it off is a beautiful,
- 6:02indispensable gift that one could receive.
- 6:06I've been speaking a lot more in recovery spaces.
- 6:08I've been asked to share my story and it's been going really
- 6:10well. I shared at a meeting last night
- 6:12and I had a few people come up to me and tell me about the body
- 6:16dysmorphia and how they can relate to not feeling like
- 6:18enough and searching for outside things to change my insides.
- 6:23I have lost my right to chemical Peace of Mind, but I need to go
- 6:26through all the avenues first to realize that I'm beyond human
- 6:28aid, that there is nothing in the world that can satisfy this
- 6:32alcoholic addict as much as a power greater than myself.
- 6:35That inner resource, that that strength, that spiritual friend,
- 6:40that spiritual being, the creator, whatever you want to
- 6:44call it. But being in touch with that is
- 6:45a beautiful place to be. I talk about secrets a lot as I
- 6:49record this. Today I have no secrets.
- 6:51Tomorrow that might change. I don't know.
- 6:52I need to constantly be checking myself secrets.
- 6:56You're only as sick as your secrets and they will take you
- 6:58back out because it creates a wide immense amount of shame,
- 7:02guilt, remorse, bitterness, resentment towards yourself,
- 7:05resentment towards others. Share that shit.
- 7:07Get it out with people in your recovery space.
- 7:10Don't just go to your spaces and pretend that everything's all
- 7:13right. Get vulnerable and find somebody
- 7:15that you can be completely, 100% honest with.
- 7:17Make sure somebody on this earth, some human being, knows
- 7:20100% of you, everything that's going on in your life.
- 7:23Make sure you disclose it with one person.
- 7:26Coming up to the end of my schooling, for the first year,
- 7:28it's been a challenge. I used to tell myself that I'm
- 7:31not a school person and that wasn't doing me any service, any
- 7:34anything that wasn't doing me any good.
- 7:36Telling myself that I can't be a student, I can't do this, this
- 7:40is too hard. Nothing good comes of that.
- 7:42So I've been reprogramming my thought pattern and my
- 7:45conversation with myself. The most important conversation
- 7:47you have in life is with yourself.
- 7:50I've been reframing it to, yes, I am a student.
- 7:53I am accepting reality. I did choose to go into this
- 7:55program and become a counsellor and help other people finish
- 7:58what you started. Anthony.
- 7:59It's a beautiful gift to be able to recognize that.
- 8:03I feel like an imposter a lot of the time, and that's OK, but I
- 8:06can do things I put my mind to when I'm sober.
- 8:09Working at the rehab has also been a blessing.
- 8:11Talking to new Alcoholics and addicts, trying to get them into
- 8:14rehab, often being the first phone call for somebody that's
- 8:16scared and doesn't know what to do it.
- 8:18I feel like I'm talking to myself every single time the
- 8:20time I speak to these people. It is truly amazing.
- 8:23If you can find your passion in life, something that you're good
- 8:25at, do it. Don't worry about the money.
- 8:28If I can give anyone any advice, and this is to myself as well
- 8:31because I often get hung up on this, just find your joy in
- 8:36doing what you ought to be doing.
- 8:38It's there. There is something that you are
- 8:40good at that you can help others in and also make a living doing
- 8:45it. Find that thing.
- 8:47This past year, I've also realized that I do a lot of this
- 8:49comparison thing when I, when I meet outside people, when I'm in
- 8:53the world, when I'm exposed to my environment and community
- 8:56and, and God's children, I often compare myself to people I'm
- 9:01either better than or less than them based on fully physical
- 9:05features and observations. And again, stories that I spin
- 9:09about people. If you're wearing a white, a
- 9:11nice watch, you must be a rich asshole.
- 9:13And that's kind of the story I tell myself in my head.
- 9:15Not helpful. I've been working on that a lot,
- 9:18noticing these thoughts arise and before I, you know, how can
- 9:20I be of service to this person? If somebody wrongs me, This is a
- 9:23sick man, sick woman. How can I help them?
- 9:26Service keeps me straight. Service keeps me accountable and
- 9:30it keeps me out of my own shit. There's nothing better than
- 9:33helping another alcoholic through a difficult process.
- 9:36I'm working with a guy right now that's on the edge.
- 9:38She's teetering and it's, it's not up to me whether he gets
- 9:41sober or not, but when he's ready, I'm here.
- 9:44And you can be that same lighthouse for somebody else.
- 9:47You're not telling them what to do.
- 9:48You're sharing your experience with them.
- 9:50Hopefully they grasp some of the principles and want what you
- 9:54have. And if you want what I have, you
- 9:55have to do what I did. I won't tell you to do anything,
- 9:58but here's what I did. Here's how I achieved freedom.
- 10:01I'm free today. I'm a free man.
- 10:03I don't have any secrets, my resentments are at Bay.
- 10:06I am not constantly casting my negativity onto the world.
- 10:10I am not a burden in anyone's life.
- 10:13I am a principled man that is doing his best essentially
- 10:16today. Tomorrow that might change.
- 10:18All I have is today. All you have is today.
- 10:20One thing that I noticed I do a lot this past year is isolation.
- 10:24So finding myself being more comfortable being alone or at
- 10:28home with my wife, then out in my community and hanging out
- 10:30with my friends. Fellowship.
- 10:32Fellowship is important because it shows you that you can be
- 10:35around people that want the best for you and you can enjoy life.
- 10:39The simple pleasures in life, building relationships, gaining
- 10:43knowledge. When I hang out with people that
- 10:44are in recovery, I learn about myself.
- 10:47They tell me their struggles and how they're getting through
- 10:49them, their unmanaged abilities and how they're dealing with it.
- 10:53It helps me be a better man, a better husband, a better son, a
- 10:56better brother. Going for coffee is a quick,
- 10:59easy way to get out of this rut. Just finding a number in your
- 11:02phone that you've met over the years or over the months at
- 11:04recovery events, meetings, spaces, Ask them to go for
- 11:08coffee. You won't regret it, I promise
- 11:10you it is. I always leave feeling better
- 11:12about myself and about my status in the world and my place in
- 11:16this world. You are no longer alone.
- 11:19I mentioned integrity a little bit, but this is something that
- 11:21keeps coming up. I'm constantly faced with
- 11:23situations where I can easily not practice my recovery program
- 11:28and not take the principled approach and skimp out on being
- 11:32a good person. Integrity is doing the right
- 11:34thing when no one is watching. It is so hard to be a principled
- 11:38person throughout every instance of your life, you're constantly
- 11:41being faced with the universe will throw things at you that
- 11:44you need to work on. There's a scientific term behind
- 11:48it. It's a real thing.
- 11:49You will be constantly faced with more if you need, if you
- 11:52need to work on patience and you ask God to be more patient, you
- 11:56will be presented with situations that will require
- 11:59your patience and it's you're sharpening a skill.
- 12:02Patience is such a great asset to have in recovery because I
- 12:06don't need to control outcomes. I can just do the next right
- 12:09thing and let God take care of the outcome, do what's in front
- 12:12of me, leave the results up to him, up to the universe.
- 12:15It's not up to me. And I don't need to have the
- 12:19answer all the time because again, like I said in the
- 12:21beginning, what I come up with is nowhere near as creative or
- 12:25imaginable. I can't imagine anything that
- 12:27God has in store for me because I just can't.
- 12:29I'm AI have finite power compared to infinite power.
- 12:33Lack of power is my dilemma today.
- 12:35So again, short 1 today, hopefully that helped somebody.
- 12:39If you're struggling, reach out for help to somebody that you
- 12:41trust. Maybe telling them that one
- 12:43thing you're holding on to that secret, maybe that'll say it
- 12:46might save your life. So I don't know, try it, maybe
- 12:50it'll work for you. I know today that the more
- 12:52secrets I have, the more sick I am, the more closer I am to
- 12:56rehab and relapse again. Recovery is a beautiful gift to
- 13:02not be taken advantage of, to not be taken for granted.
- 13:07Not everybody gets the privilege and opportunity to be in
- 13:10recovery, so remember that today.
- 13:12Recovery is simple, not easy.
