- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, good morning and welcome to the Saturday Sports Show.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm flying solo today is Adrian can't make it, so
- 0:14Speaker 1: we'll have a mixture of sport and music in between
- 0:17Speaker 1: chatting to her two special guests, Belinda and David Hutchins. Now,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Belinda and David have just come back from America where
- 0:31Speaker 1: they took are in possibly the smallest part run on
- 0:36Speaker 1: the planet. So let's get this show on the road
- 1:02Speaker 1: with a classic track from Crewden's clear Water Revival. It's
- 1:06Speaker 1: be kind of have gonna have kind of an American
- 1:08Speaker 1: theme today, this track, it just conjures up ideas of
- 1:14Speaker 1: a giant paddle steamer steaming up the Mississippi in the
- 1:18Speaker 1: days of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. So let's check
- 1:22Speaker 1: out the Creden's clear Water Revival and Proud Mary Wake.
- 1:55Speaker 1: There is Creden's clear Water Revival there, and that was
- 1:58Speaker 1: a great track from the sixties and I love that track,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and I do believe they're doing the rounds again actually,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so look out for there must be one of the
- 2:07Speaker 1: final farewell tours like all the elders are doing. Anyway, today,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I'm joined by David and Belinda, who have just come
- 2:15Speaker 1: back from America where we're going to talk later on
- 2:19Speaker 1: about this what I think must be the smallest part
- 2:22Speaker 1: run in the world. So I want to say good
- 2:24Speaker 1: morning to you first, Belinda. Good morning, Blinda. How are you?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Thank you? Kevin?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Good good, So it's good to see you. So David,
- 2:31Speaker 1: how are you today?
- 2:32Speaker 3: A right, good morning, Kevin, Yeah, very good, thanks.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Good, excellent. All right, now, Blinda, we're going to sort
- 2:37Speaker 1: of turn the clock back a bit now, so I
- 2:39Speaker 1: want to find out a bit about what you've been
- 2:40Speaker 1: up to and how you got into sports. So tell
- 2:43Speaker 1: me a little bit about your sporty background.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I found out about skiing on a school trip when
- 2:50Speaker 2: I was eighteen, and then wanted to do more of
- 2:54Speaker 2: it and started doing snow patrol on a plastic ski slope,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and then I started training to be a ski instructor,
- 3:01Speaker 2: and I was teaching on plastic and then decided to
- 3:05Speaker 2: have a look and see if I could go somewhere
- 3:07Speaker 2: English speaking to teach abroad and ended up in Waterville Valley,
- 3:12Speaker 2: New Hampshire.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Did you that come about? Did you have to apply
- 3:16Speaker 1: to a special ski school or was there like an
- 3:19Speaker 1: agency just.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Sent loads of letters to all different ski resorts. Letters
- 3:24Speaker 2: in those days don't even have facts, yeah, no, and
- 3:30Speaker 2: loads of letters, and that one came back. Joseph Young,
- 3:33Speaker 2: an Austrian director guy who was a director of the
- 3:36Speaker 2: ski school in Waterville Valley got back to us. He
- 3:40Speaker 2: wanted more European ski instructures, so he was that's how
- 3:44Speaker 2: we got the job.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Really great. And what about you, your David, how did
- 3:48Speaker 1: you get into sport? Tell us a bit about what
- 3:50Speaker 1: you've done in the past.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Well, mostly competitive sport really, sort of football. I was
- 3:57Speaker 3: playing Sunday League and eleven side and then AstroTurf in
- 4:02Speaker 3: the weeks, and a bit of squash, a bit of golf,
- 4:05Speaker 3: anything that was competitive right.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Oh that's good, yeah, yeah, but.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, interestingly, nothing running.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Right, So how did you start running then?
- 4:14Speaker 3: First time I ran was back in ninety six, part
- 4:18Speaker 3: of sports side and kind of had a bit of
- 4:21Speaker 3: an interest in it, but not a lot. But my Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 3: my intro to running was COVID. I mean, probably like
- 4:27Speaker 3: many people, there wasn't much else to be done or
- 4:31Speaker 3: to do, but when you could go out and exercise,
- 4:34Speaker 3: it was something that we could do together.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Right exactly, Yeah, because COVID was a funny old time,
- 4:39Speaker 1: wasn't it. I mean, you weren't allowed out, but running
- 4:42Speaker 1: was something that you could do on your own without
- 4:45Speaker 1: sort of getting close to anybody two meters whatever it was. Yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 1: so you found you found that running suited you then,
- 4:53Speaker 1: did you?
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah? And I mean back then the main rons were
- 4:56Speaker 3: dead because there was nobody out and so and yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 3: got to enjoy it and it was a good good
- 5:04Speaker 3: for the physical but the mental health as well, getting out.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Did you ever try the skiing at all?
- 5:09Speaker 3: I did? I did. We were going out back then
- 5:12Speaker 3: when Belinda was over in the States, so I think
- 5:15Speaker 3: when I was meant to be doing my university student placement,
- 5:19Speaker 3: I was out skiing.
- 5:20Speaker 1: For Was he a good pupil? Belinda was well.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Actually I was too busy to be the one teaching him,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I was. I was working seven days a week. So
- 5:29Speaker 2: did you have some lessons with.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I did have a few lessons and tried a bit
- 5:34Speaker 3: of snowboarding, and I preferred snowboarding back then.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But yeah, there's the trial remain sadly and you're quite
- 5:42Speaker 1: new to folks them. But the sports center, which is
- 5:45Speaker 1: unfortunately closed at the moment. Did ever outdoor ski?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I remember?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's it was so popular. It really was.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I mean the sports center was opened years ago, years
- 5:59Speaker 1: and years ago, and I can remember taking my children
- 6:02Speaker 1: down there and like to a little children's party and
- 6:06Speaker 1: within sort of half an hour the instructor had just
- 6:09Speaker 1: ye going down a small slope. But yes, the facility,
- 6:15Speaker 1: which we hope we'll come back, is kind of watch
- 6:17Speaker 1: this space.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I would love to, you know, I be in there.
- 6:20Speaker 2: You've got a job there.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But it's such a great sport because anyone can do it.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I can get anyone to ski, and I love it
- 6:26Speaker 2: because it's so encouraging people. They think I'll never be
- 6:29Speaker 2: able to do that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 2: within a short space of time.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah great they can.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So.
- 6:34Speaker 1: David, you just come back from this trip. Was it
- 6:37Speaker 1: a kind of a nostalgic trip or did you obviously
- 6:40Speaker 1: you've got connections with America in the past, but did
- 6:44Speaker 1: you have a mission where you you know, did you
- 6:46Speaker 1: have an agenda that you wanted to get through.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Well, we were sitting there in January and Blinda looked
- 6:54Speaker 3: up and Blinda's resort where she used to ski and
- 6:58Speaker 3: in strike Waterfielle Valley to have some of the Olympics
- 7:02Speaker 3: freestyle qualifying on at the time, So Belinda said, wouldn't
- 7:07Speaker 3: it be great if we could go over and see
- 7:09Speaker 3: the freestyle and make a trip of it. So we said,
- 7:14Speaker 3: well why not. So I think we booked literally about
- 7:16Speaker 3: a week before we went, and then I asked my
- 7:19Speaker 3: boss for some leave once we booked, and off we went.
- 7:23Speaker 3: So it's entirely spontaneous trip. Fantastic.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean America is such a big such
- 7:31Speaker 1: a big country. And where did you Where did you
- 7:34Speaker 1: fly into?
- 7:35Speaker 3: We flew into New York, did a couple of days
- 7:37Speaker 3: in New York, which was amazing, and the nine to
- 7:42Speaker 3: eleven Memorial.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well I've been to New York and.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Been incredibly moving. Yeah yeah, And then did all sorts
- 7:51Speaker 3: of things like the Ghostbusters via Station New York. Then
- 7:57Speaker 3: we traveled up and did a week up at Uderville Valley.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Then we traveled across to we wanted to go to
- 8:03Speaker 3: Punks to Tony. Do you know the film Groundhog Day?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Oh yes, yes, yes, Bill Murray, So we went there
- 8:09Speaker 3: to see Phil the Groundhog, then traveled up to and
- 8:14Speaker 3: then of course the Susquehanna Park.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Run right, Yeah, Susquehanna Park Run. Okay, so you're transition
- 8:22Speaker 1: from skiing to running? Was that easy? What was it?
- 8:27Speaker 1: It was?
- 8:27Speaker 2: I was going to see a fitness instructor once a
- 8:31Speaker 2: week with two other friends in a park and then
- 8:34Speaker 2: we started talking someone mentioned the park run and we
- 8:38Speaker 2: thought we'd try and do that every Saturday as well.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so I'm really looking forward to the story
- 8:44Speaker 1: about the smallest park running the world. Okay, we're going
- 8:48Speaker 1: to play a bit of music now, so David, you've
- 8:50Speaker 1: got a little story to tell us about this next track?
- 8:54Speaker 1: So gone?
- 8:55Speaker 3: Then, yeah, Well the Bomb Jovi Living on a Prayer.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'm sure it's on everybody's run playlist, but it's right
- 9:03Speaker 3: at the top of mine. And and I've made no apologies.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I love it. But and it's kind of a bit
- 9:08Speaker 3: of a play on words halfway there because we're doing
- 9:11Speaker 3: half marathons this year and signed up and we're also
- 9:15Speaker 3: going to see them in September, so they're over at Wembley.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So Wembley, Yeah, at the stadium.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Of the Stadium in September, So.
- 9:22Speaker 1: That would be acted because they really are.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And now he's got his voice back from Yeah, I.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Thought why not so yeah, okay, So what we're going
- 9:32Speaker 1: to do now is pray this song for David and Belinda,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and just ahead of them going to see bon Jovi
- 9:38Speaker 1: singing Living on a Prayer. Soon there Living on a
- 10:09Speaker 1: Prayer and David and Belinda were rocking around a studio
- 10:11Speaker 1: and there's no stopping the month they've been out up
- 10:14Speaker 1: to High Street, then the Harbor, and now they just
- 10:16Speaker 1: come back. Okay, So Belinda, we'll come to you. So
- 10:21Speaker 1: you you got to New York and so just tell
- 10:24Speaker 1: us a bit about your road trip to the The
- 10:27Speaker 1: proper name is the Susquehanna Riverwalk Park Run. We want
- 10:30Speaker 1: to talk about that.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, what was the name of the actual town that
- 10:34Speaker 2: we were in. Can you remember william Williamsport. Yeah, so
- 10:37Speaker 2: the Susquehanna River runs through williams Sport. And yeah, this
- 10:42Speaker 2: guy who is a lecturate a college had taken us
- 10:45Speaker 2: a batical to South Africa and found a part run
- 10:49Speaker 2: out there and thought, oh, what's this park ron Lark,
- 10:54Speaker 2: I think I might want to set one up in
- 10:56Speaker 2: the US. So he came back and for one of
- 10:58Speaker 2: the students assignments, they had to sort of research it
- 11:04Speaker 2: and see if they could set one up and that's
- 11:06Speaker 2: what they did just before lockdown, right, And I mean.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Did you know it was going to be as small as.
- 11:14Speaker 2: It was you Well, we'd looked at the stats. Yeah, yeah, right,
- 11:18Speaker 2: and we did actually think this is quite good. We've
- 11:20Speaker 2: got a chance of doing quite well in this part run.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean when you when when I read about
- 11:27Speaker 1: it and I started looking into it, and I will say,
- 11:31Speaker 1: David that you did actually come first, didn't you?
- 11:33Speaker 3: I did?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Yeah? That was that was really amazing that you know,
- 11:37Speaker 1: you're really chaugh. You can't take that away from you.
- 11:40Speaker 2: He was so far ahead of any of them.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah. But David, tell me how many runners were in
- 11:47Speaker 1: the park run that day. I think there was about ten, Yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And that would included some other visitors this yeah, yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 3: very small one. But we were just glad it was
- 11:58Speaker 3: on because of trying to find one that was on.
- 12:00Speaker 3: With the winter weather and the snowstorms.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It was cold on the day, was it.
- 12:05Speaker 3: It was about freezing minus eight something like that.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, on the.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Day, so yeah, we're in the Oh, it's a bitter
- 12:12Speaker 3: the Long Johns.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Well, it looked on their Facebook page and there was
- 12:18Speaker 1: a weather report of a run that they did cancel
- 12:21Speaker 1: because the weather was so bad, and the stats on
- 12:24Speaker 1: that one were was and the other thing was I
- 12:27Speaker 1: had to look at it closely because it was measured
- 12:30Speaker 1: in fahrenheit. Now, when I grew up that thought it
- 12:33Speaker 1: was fahrenheit, but now got your heads twisted round and
- 12:38Speaker 1: it can relate to centigrade. But this was in fahrenheit.
- 12:41Speaker 1: So it was twelve degrees fahrenheit with a wind of
- 12:44Speaker 1: fifteen to twenty mile an hour and the chill which
- 12:47Speaker 1: brought it down to minus ten or minus fifteen degrees fahrenheit.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Well I did the conversion and found that that was
- 12:53Speaker 1: minus twenty. So that is an extreme, isn't it. I mean,
- 12:59Speaker 1: you don't want to run in anything.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Yeah, even with my glasses on, I'm crying the whole time.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, right, it's okay. So you turn up at
- 13:09Speaker 1: this US Ghana part, do they do they do the
- 13:14Speaker 1: same format as England, you know, like a first time
- 13:18Speaker 1: as race briefing.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Absolutely, yes, the race director does it all and he's
- 13:25Speaker 2: the end where you turn. He has done the run
- 13:29Speaker 2: in the morning and he's chalked out the point where
- 13:32Speaker 2: the runner has to turn. Because he didn't have a
- 13:35Speaker 2: person that could be right at that far in Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 2: and yeah he did the briefing for the newcomers and
- 13:45Speaker 2: all the safety thing, what about the dogs on leashes?
- 13:50Speaker 1: So you thought I've heard this before in the country. Yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 1: but I mean the town Williams Sport, I mean, is
- 13:59Speaker 1: it does it look like big town smalling?
- 14:02Speaker 3: Kind of quite industrial, wasn't it? You think? And somebody
- 14:05Speaker 3: was telling me. One of a friend of Belinda's that
- 14:09Speaker 3: we visited, was telling us it was used to be.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I mean, it's a timber and logging area and it's
- 14:15Speaker 3: where that the most of the baseball bats used to
- 14:18Speaker 3: come out when they before they turned to aluminum or still.
- 14:22Speaker 3: So it was a big, big place for that, Yeah, apparently.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But the run director was his name against the Jeff Newman.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Jeff Newman, Good morning to you, Jeff. I hope at
- 14:31Speaker 1: some point you're going to hear this, because I mean
- 14:34Speaker 1: it was Jeff frustrated after after trying to get this
- 14:39Speaker 1: part run off the ground.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I think so, yeah, I mean, but he was tirelessly
- 14:44Speaker 2: keeping it going.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Well, this is the thing. I mean, it started in
- 14:47Speaker 1: October twenty one, I think it was, and it's done
- 14:51Speaker 1: over two hundred and the highest attendance thirty nine, and
- 14:58Speaker 1: that was on an anniversary hundreds of park run. But
- 15:01Speaker 1: he's such a brave, determined man. We've got to admire
- 15:04Speaker 1: him for the long, you know, the tenacity of keeping
- 15:09Speaker 1: it going, and I.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Really hope he does. Yeah, I think it will catch on.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But when you speak to Americans where I've got lots
- 15:16Speaker 2: of American WANs all over the states, they've never heard
- 15:19Speaker 2: of it. Park run. They say park run, they think,
- 15:21Speaker 2: what's that? You know? So he's got that to contend
- 15:25Speaker 2: with no one's heard of it.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Just getting the word out there, really and hope that
- 15:28Speaker 1: the word spreads because it is such a big, big country.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I was looking, I've done. This is really interesting. I
- 15:36Speaker 1: just googled so much information about American park runs, and
- 15:41Speaker 1: I mean there are hundreds of miles apart on them,
- 15:43Speaker 1: that's the other thing. Yeah, so you've got to rely
- 15:46Speaker 1: on your initial community that's by the river there.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Like Pennsylvania. I think there's about three hundred miles between
- 15:55Speaker 2: the park un in one state.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Okay, so you turn up and you have your you're
- 16:00Speaker 1: race briefing, and would you say there was other tourists
- 16:04Speaker 1: there as well, David.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and there was a young lady who'd come along
- 16:09Speaker 3: for the first time because she's training for a marathon,
- 16:12Speaker 3: so she wanted somebody locally as well.
- 16:15Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, okay, so your set off, so
- 16:18Speaker 1: you're thinking, you know what I'm in with the shore. Yeah,
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's a shame you didn't get a trophy, isn't it.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah, So what about the actual course itself? What was that? Like?
- 16:27Speaker 3: The course is straight up the side of the river
- 16:32Speaker 3: and then to the chalk line turn and then back,
- 16:36Speaker 3: probably about a couple of meter three meter ramp up
- 16:39Speaker 3: and down. But I'd actually pulled my calf muscle on
- 16:43Speaker 3: New Year's Day running along the beach here by folks,
- 16:47Speaker 3: and so I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to
- 16:50Speaker 3: do it. And then we went skiing off. What I'm
- 16:55Speaker 3: going skiing? I don't care, strap it up and do that,
- 16:58Speaker 3: and then and there was just about dole. But I've
- 17:00Speaker 3: got to about four k on this park runners, Oh,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I know, the calf's going. What do I do? And
- 17:07Speaker 3: so I'm going to stop and stretch and take a
- 17:10Speaker 3: time just to stretch it out here.
- 17:12Speaker 1: So you couldn't see the second runner wasn't anywhere near
- 17:15Speaker 1: you then no.
- 17:16Speaker 3: That's it. Yeah, and then carried on and won it.
- 17:19Speaker 1: So yeah, great, great, you can't take that away from it, David.
- 17:23Speaker 3: You have one apart run absolutely, yeah, it might be
- 17:26Speaker 3: the last or who knows.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it'd been Bushy Park. You might have
- 17:30Speaker 1: something to rave about that. Well.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Our original part run back in Bromley where we lived.
- 17:35Speaker 3: There's about seven eight hundred people there, so it's crazy busy.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean the folks. The one has grown
- 17:41Speaker 1: and grown as well. I mean it's been going over
- 17:43Speaker 1: ten years now, eleven years I think, and I was
- 17:47Speaker 1: there at the very first one all those years ago.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And my claim to fame is that I've never run it. No, no,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I won't. I help out when I can. I mean
- 18:01Speaker 1: i'd sometimes get up and do a little bit on
- 18:03Speaker 1: the bandstand, take my pa stuff down there and have
- 18:06Speaker 1: a little chat and as the runners come by, you know,
- 18:09Speaker 1: give them a bit of stick. But I say, I've
- 18:12Speaker 1: never done a part run, and why not? But I must,
- 18:18Speaker 1: I must say that my excuse for not doing a
- 18:21Speaker 1: part run is because I like to go along and
- 18:22Speaker 1: watch it. I really do. Because the last more than
- 18:27Speaker 1: ten years I've been promoting local sport. So I think
- 18:30Speaker 1: it's this one time that I can go along just
- 18:32Speaker 1: watch the sport without being involved and enjoy it because
- 18:37Speaker 1: I do a lot of comparing the races as well,
- 18:39Speaker 1: so kind of focused on the on runners and so
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think I'm just going to go along and relax.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But anyway, No, it's grown from strength to strength to
- 18:48Speaker 1: focus the one and I do. I do enjoy popping
- 18:51Speaker 1: up there. I've also got links with the Dover one.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I pop over there sometimes with the PA equipment and
- 18:58Speaker 1: if it's their birthday or or I did two Christmas ones,
- 19:02Speaker 1: one at Over and one at Folks and so yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I love the concept of the part run and that
- 19:07Speaker 1: is growing all the time. Okay, so you you won
- 19:12Speaker 1: your part run, So what was the next step? Did
- 19:14Speaker 1: you stay overnight or did you hit the road?
- 19:17Speaker 3: We hit the road. We were on our way as mentioned,
- 19:20Speaker 3: we went. We popped into punks, so Tony did that,
- 19:24Speaker 3: and then.
- 19:24Speaker 2: We were around tog Day film my most favorite all
- 19:27Speaker 2: time film.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. And then we were
- 19:31Speaker 3: actually on our way to one of Belinda's good time
- 19:34Speaker 3: friends and ski instructor friend from thirty years ago in Cleveland.
- 19:39Speaker 3: So that was our next, our next step in the trip.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Right. Excellent. Okay, so it's time for a little bit
- 19:45Speaker 1: of music now. So I do believe David, you've got
- 19:47Speaker 1: another little story to tell us about this track.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Yeah, this one again. It's on my playlist, It's probably
- 19:53Speaker 3: on many runners playlists. But again I make no apologies
- 19:57Speaker 3: for it. It. They did a remake mix back in
- 20:01Speaker 3: nineteen eighty six, I think it was, and changed the
- 20:05Speaker 3: title slightly from Everybody wants to rule the world to
- 20:08Speaker 3: Everybody wants to run the world. And it was part
- 20:11Speaker 3: of the sports ade back then for that and that
- 20:15Speaker 3: was Yeah. I think it was a ten k we
- 20:17Speaker 3: were doing. But yeah, I was probably doing that over
- 20:19Speaker 3: several hours or something like that. But there it is. Yeah,
- 20:22Speaker 3: Tears for Fears.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. And now you say that back in
- 20:26Speaker 1: eighty six, I actually run the equivalent run down in Folkston.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Oh.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It started at Radney Park, I can't remember it went,
- 20:35Speaker 1: it went up the Lease and it went up the
- 20:37Speaker 1: Eastcliff and I remember that the footballer Glenn hoddle Yes,
- 20:43Speaker 1: he was running it. I don't know how he got involved.
- 20:45Speaker 1: He was running it and he had two minders with him,
- 20:48Speaker 1: had a minor river side. He was a high profile
- 20:50Speaker 1: football or football manager at the time, and I tucked
- 20:53Speaker 1: him behind him, and I thought, I'm going to get
- 20:56Speaker 1: my picture in the paper. I'm going to run level
- 20:59Speaker 1: with him when they crossed the line. So I stayed
- 21:01Speaker 1: with it and stayed with it, and they were about
- 21:04Speaker 1: three of them, were about a quarter of a mile
- 21:06Speaker 1: from the finish and they were gone. I couldn't get
- 21:09Speaker 1: anywhere near and so I never got me a picture
- 21:11Speaker 1: in the paper. But so yeah, this takes me back
- 21:14Speaker 1: to the days of the Running in the Family and
- 21:16Speaker 1: a level forty two? So there, did you spot the error? Hey,
- 21:31Speaker 1: David and Belinda did that was? Of course, everybody wants
- 21:36Speaker 1: to rule the world. Running in the Family is the
- 21:38Speaker 1: next song. I don't expect we've got a little story
- 21:40Speaker 1: about that to tell. But don't you just love live radio? Okay,
- 21:43Speaker 1: so we're going to chat with Belinda now. So Belinda,
- 21:46Speaker 1: you were your early day trips to America to go
- 21:50Speaker 1: skiing as a skiing instructor. You still get got contacts
- 21:54Speaker 1: out there. I mean, this is your friend that you
- 21:56Speaker 1: went to see from thirty years ago. Had you seen
- 21:59Speaker 1: her in the intro?
- 22:00Speaker 2: I do pop over and see her every now and again,
- 22:03Speaker 2: and she'd come over once. But yeah, we stayed in
- 22:05Speaker 2: touch all the way through. We're very good friends. For
- 22:08Speaker 2: two of the four years we actually rented a house together.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Okay, So in your days as a ski instructor, was
- 22:15Speaker 1: it just Americans or was it all tourists?
- 22:18Speaker 2: All Americans? The resort where we work is. I mean,
- 22:21Speaker 2: you probably wouldn't come from further afield. It would be
- 22:24Speaker 2: kind of around New York State and Connecticut and Massachusetts.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I don't think, well, rarely do you have someone coming
- 22:32Speaker 2: because it's such a long way to get there. You fly,
- 22:36Speaker 2: you have to fly into Boston or New York. Then
- 22:38Speaker 2: you've got to get a bus from New York to
- 22:42Speaker 2: a place called Concord, and then another bus in and
- 22:45Speaker 2: you know, the transports really limited. Yeah, it's in the
- 22:48Speaker 2: middle of nowhere basically.
- 22:50Speaker 1: And I mean he was out there for four years.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Was yeh four ski seasons?
- 22:56Speaker 1: Yeah, four seasons. You came home in the between.
- 23:00Speaker 2: On the first year I was there, I traveled a bit.
- 23:04Speaker 2: It went all the way around the states looking in
- 23:07Speaker 2: a car, and then the other three years just came
- 23:11Speaker 2: back for the ski seasons.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the snow itself. Is it guaranteed every year? Yeah?
- 23:18Speaker 2: Really, I mean we had we had a couple of seasons.
- 23:22Speaker 2: I mean it's changed is a bit now. The seasons
- 23:24Speaker 2: have changed, haven't they. But no, there was tons of
- 23:28Speaker 2: snow this time.
- 23:29Speaker 1: And yeah, right, so David, so you've you've been focusing
- 23:34Speaker 1: about a year. So what you joined the folks in
- 23:39Speaker 1: Running Club? Is that right?
- 23:40Speaker 3: That's right? Yeah, we moved down and all the turmoil
- 23:45Speaker 3: and tumultuous year of all sort of up and down
- 23:48Speaker 3: and moot, selling the house and dealing with our various
- 23:53Speaker 3: other challenges we've got in the family, and yeah, we
- 23:58Speaker 3: wanted to engage into the community as readily as we could.
- 24:04Speaker 3: So I thought, yeah, I want to join the running club.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And so I think I've messaged Catherine coach Catherine shout
- 24:12Speaker 3: out to you and she said, yeah, come along. And
- 24:18Speaker 3: my plan was to only just improve a bit of
- 24:21Speaker 3: part run speed and all of that, but they're so
- 24:23Speaker 3: inspiring and we're doing a couple of halfs this year
- 24:27Speaker 3: already we booked up and who knows where it will
- 24:31Speaker 3: go from there.
- 24:32Speaker 1: But since you've joined the club, I mean, if you've
- 24:34Speaker 1: got a bit more structures you're running and see a
- 24:36Speaker 1: bit further than just yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Absolutely, yeah, it's great. And she'll do the dynamics and
- 24:41Speaker 3: the different Tuesday and Thursday distances to get your cardio
- 24:49Speaker 3: up in your distance and train the body. I'm probably
- 24:53Speaker 3: talking rubbish if but yeah, massive loads of improvement and
- 24:59Speaker 3: then getting involved in the club events as well that
- 25:01Speaker 3: the summer relays and the winter handicaps.
- 25:04Speaker 1: You did, did the the relays that.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I just caught the back end of it. So
- 25:08Speaker 3: I did Canterbury, which is it was the last one
- 25:11Speaker 3: I think.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Yeah, really good fun over the years i've done.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, and then we'll be at the Folks and
- 25:19Speaker 3: ten but Marshalling Yeah yeah.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Well I'll be on the mic at the green, so
- 25:24Speaker 1: I might not see you actually, and that's what happens,
- 25:26Speaker 1: but if you come back to the finish you'll hear
- 25:29Speaker 1: me during all the runners in. Do you did you
- 25:33Speaker 1: know that there's a mile straight down on the promenade
- 25:37Speaker 1: Don Tompson Mile?
- 25:39Speaker 3: Yes, we do. Yeah, we haven't come up.
- 25:41Speaker 2: On doesn't it.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, I think it's on our club schedule.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And there is an event.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, there's a Don Tomson Mile and funny enough,
- 25:51Speaker 1: I've been speaking about it quite a bit in the
- 25:53Speaker 1: last few weeks because a certain other radio station that's
- 25:56Speaker 1: county wide asked me to do an interview about the
- 25:59Speaker 1: Don Tomson So we went down there and it's it's
- 26:04Speaker 1: basically a mile point to point race and always make
- 26:08Speaker 1: sure the wind is on your back because I was
- 26:11Speaker 1: doing six minute Miley when I did it. We won
- 26:14Speaker 1: one year. But yeah, that's very interesting. One of the
- 26:17Speaker 1: plaques is missing.
- 26:18Speaker 2: At the moment, I say, I'm hoping they're going to replace.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I either replace it will find it. We had
- 26:23Speaker 1: a really bad storm and they were moving cars, you know,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and benches, and someone down there said that the plaque
- 26:29Speaker 1: is missing. The club are aware of it, and so
- 26:33Speaker 1: we hopefully get that replaced. Okay, so we're moving on
- 26:38Speaker 1: to another song now. Now this song is the song
- 26:41Speaker 1: that I introduced last time. But so, is there any
- 26:45Speaker 1: special story for this one, Belinda.
- 26:47Speaker 3: David Well, I mean, primarily I love Level forty two.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I've always been a big fan. We went to see
- 26:55Speaker 3: him last year. They're amazing musically and we love seeing that.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But yeah, it's got a bit of a play on words,
- 27:03Speaker 3: probably because it's the frak family as we call it,
- 27:07Speaker 3: and especially people like Darren, you know, barefoot darrens in
- 27:13Speaker 3: the club. He's always saying, frak family. So and it
- 27:17Speaker 3: is a real family community.
- 27:18Speaker 1: This is I'm not going to just explain what Frank
- 27:20Speaker 1: is for the.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Folksed and running and athletics club, but super encouraging and
- 27:30Speaker 3: very kind and everything. So yeah, we're really blessed by that.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Really So yeah, okay, good, So, okay, we'll dedicate this
- 27:37Speaker 1: one to the Frak family. I've got it right at
- 27:39Speaker 1: this time. This is running in the family. In the family,
- 28:01Speaker 1: so level forty two. I'll tell you what, David, you
- 28:06Speaker 1: could get at your presenter here. There's great tracks off
- 28:09Speaker 1: you're picking out and all the bands you've been to see, yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 1: talking off as you've had an awesome journey with your music. Okay,
- 28:17Speaker 1: So we're running out of time now, so this is
- 28:19Speaker 1: going to be our last little chat and I wanted
- 28:22Speaker 1: to make as you've come back from America and by
- 28:26Speaker 1: the sounds of it, we could do another two or
- 28:27Speaker 1: three hours here talking about America and traveling and skiing
- 28:31Speaker 1: and park running, but I think it's time to just say,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you know, a few thank you to your friends in
- 28:37Speaker 1: America and thank you to anybody really so so because
- 28:41Speaker 1: this is with the wonders of technology today, this has
- 28:44Speaker 1: got the ability to get out there and go worldwide.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So so, David, any special hellos and well done and
- 28:53Speaker 1: shout outs you want to give.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Oh, I think definitely to the Frank families.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah, cool folk.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Yeah, running club. They're hugely inspiring and we get to
- 29:05Speaker 3: know people every single time we run there twice a week.
- 29:09Speaker 3: And but yeah, Catherine O'Connor coach amazing and has inspired
- 29:15Speaker 3: me to move on and start doing more halfs and
- 29:18Speaker 3: then probably marathons, who knows so, but yeah, massive thanks
- 29:26Speaker 3: to all of those really.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, and from our travels our road trip, I'd
- 29:32Speaker 2: just like to say hi to Jim Gleason and Jeff Pohno.
- 29:36Speaker 2: It was just so great to see you after all
- 29:38Speaker 2: these years.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Thanks for making the time to catch up with us.
- 29:41Speaker 4: They were Yes, we worked together when we were at
- 29:45Speaker 4: Waterfield Valley and yeah, great, great memories with them and
- 29:50Speaker 4: just wonderful friends. And then my friend Anette who who
- 29:55Speaker 4: lives in near Fort Wayne in Indiana, and her husband John.
- 29:59Speaker 4: We stayed with them for a few days in our
- 30:01Speaker 4: road trip and then of course Margie and we stayed
- 30:05Speaker 4: with her in Ohio and Cleveland, Ohio, and Margie and
- 30:08Speaker 4: Lyle and they're just all incredible friends and it's just
- 30:12Speaker 4: great to have had the opportunity to go on that
- 30:14Speaker 4: trip and see them all again.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and David, had you met any of these people before?
- 30:19Speaker 1: But they had?
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah, Anette and John and Net used to live over
- 30:24Speaker 3: here and married to American guy and moved over. So
- 30:27Speaker 3: that was going back to probably early eighties when we
- 30:31Speaker 3: were friends.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:32Speaker 3: And then yeah, I know Margie from going over to
- 30:36Speaker 3: visit Belinda when we started going out and yeah, yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 3: years ago.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Have you got any more trips planned over there? It
- 30:43Speaker 1: seems quite frequently.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Well, were thinking we might do a road trip going
- 30:49Speaker 2: further across, So heading from Ohio, say hello to Margie
- 30:55Speaker 2: Indiana and then go towards California and down Route one
- 31:00Speaker 2: and back a loop that.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Way, right, Yeah, and what sort of vehicle did you
- 31:03Speaker 1: hire out there? Then?
- 31:05Speaker 3: Oh? What was it? Goodness, it wasn't.
- 31:08Speaker 1: It wasn't a motor home?
- 31:09Speaker 3: Was it four by four and had nice heated seeds?
- 31:13Speaker 3: Because yeah, we drove for about seven hundred miles through
- 31:16Speaker 3: snow blizzards, really seven hundred miles thirty miles an hour. Yeah,
- 31:21Speaker 3: so deep snow yeaes that heated seats helped.
- 31:27Speaker 1: What story. I mean, I've had a bit of experience
- 31:30Speaker 1: in the cold weather. I actually did work when I
- 31:33Speaker 1: was in my twenties. I went to Finland and I
- 31:35Speaker 1: was working in It was right on the Arctic Circle actually,
- 31:39Speaker 1: so it was minus twenty. I was used to work
- 31:41Speaker 1: in the motor industry and we took one of every car.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I lived in Luton at the time, and we took
- 31:46Speaker 1: one of every car to the Arctic Circle. It was
- 31:48Speaker 1: all English, all English engineering, and we gave them road
- 31:53Speaker 1: tests every day. So after we'd done all our road tests,
- 31:55Speaker 1: we usually used to have breakfast. There was a cafe
- 31:58Speaker 1: right on the Arctics, so you just have breakfast every
- 32:02Speaker 1: morning for about six weeks. Yeah, yeah, I'd to do that.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And in fact that in the town. The airport we
- 32:10Speaker 1: flew into is rob and Emi, which is the airport
- 32:12Speaker 1: that everybody flies in when they want to do the
- 32:14Speaker 1: Center trip at Christmas, you know. But the children were
- 32:19Speaker 1: going to school on skis and they all had these
- 32:21Speaker 1: high vis reflective little things like you you put on
- 32:24Speaker 1: Christmas trees. That the headlights used to pick up. Yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 1: it was quite a magical experience. Well, David and Blinda,
- 32:31Speaker 1: it's been a brilliant morning talking shit because apart from
- 32:34Speaker 1: the running and the skiing, you know, the fact that
- 32:37Speaker 1: you've been traveling and the fact that you found the
- 32:39Speaker 1: smallest part run in the world. And we want to
- 32:42Speaker 1: wish what's the race director's name, Yeah, if you're listening,
- 32:46Speaker 1: we do hope that you persevere with the part, and
- 32:49Speaker 1: we do hope that the runners start turning up in their.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Drops and come and visit us over here. We'll be able.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that'd be great. Yeah, and so so Blinda, David,
- 33:00Speaker 1: thank you very much for your time and coming in. Right. Okay,
- 33:04Speaker 1: so this one is is and this was I suppose
- 33:08Speaker 1: in the days before email. This is a letter from America.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Well, you said.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Letter, So the Proclaimers they are writing too America. And
- 33:55Speaker 1: as we said, it's been a bit of an American
- 33:56Speaker 1: theme today, and we just want to thank you David
- 33:59Speaker 1: and Belinda for coming in and telling us the stories.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We could have been here all day, but I've got
- 34:04Speaker 1: to squeeze a little bit of locals brought in. There's
- 34:06Speaker 1: not much time, so I'm just gonna whip through some
- 34:09Speaker 1: of the hockey that's going on today. Now. If you're
- 34:12Speaker 1: new to the town like David and Belinda, and you've
- 34:14Speaker 1: seen the hockey down there, but you might not realize
- 34:17Speaker 1: just how big hockey is in this town. The Folks
- 34:20Speaker 1: and Optimists have got eight men's teams and six ladies
- 34:23Speaker 1: teams and they're just they've got all the juniors they
- 34:27Speaker 1: play on the Sunday, but the first team are away today.
- 34:32Speaker 1: The first men's first team. They've got a really tough,
- 34:35Speaker 1: tough game because they are currently tenth in the table
- 34:38Speaker 1: out of twelve teams, and they've got to play Oxted,
- 34:41Speaker 1: who are top. So I don't forget. They just came
- 34:44Speaker 1: up from the Premier last year and they've kind of
- 34:47Speaker 1: struggling a little bit to hold their own. But the ladies, however,
- 34:50Speaker 1: they are going from strength to strength. They're away, they're
- 34:54Speaker 1: playing Bromley and Beckenham, but they are top of their league.
- 34:58Speaker 1: They are twelve points clear and well, hopefully they'd have
- 35:03Speaker 1: a comfortable winter day because sadly Bromley and Beckenham our bottom.
- 35:09Speaker 1: But we haven't got normally. I would try and get
- 35:11Speaker 1: through all the teams. We've used up a lot of
- 35:16Speaker 1: time talking about America as so there are several games
- 35:21Speaker 1: down at the Three Heels. If you want to fix
- 35:22Speaker 1: of hockey, just go down there and if the weather's
- 35:25Speaker 1: a bit cold, they do live stream it onto the
- 35:27Speaker 1: big screen there behind the bar. But I will say this,
- 35:30Speaker 1: this is something I really want to do because whilst
- 35:35Speaker 1: the show has been a really happy show, unfortunately I've
- 35:39Speaker 1: got some sad news. And this is from the Optimist.
- 35:42Speaker 1: This is from a Lee Marshall, former guest of the show.
- 35:44Speaker 1: He's the chairperson at the Optimists. So I just read
- 35:47Speaker 1: out the statement that he sent me during the week.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It is with a very heavy heart that I pass
- 35:53Speaker 1: on the news that Ali Walls has died suddenly at home.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Ali was being treated for a serious illness and had
- 35:59Speaker 1: not been the best of health recently. Despite this, he
- 36:02Speaker 1: was at the club last Saturday to watch hockey and
- 36:04Speaker 1: be amongst friends. Ali was the center of Optimist life
- 36:08Speaker 1: since he joined the club over forty years ago. His
- 36:11Speaker 1: name was first on the team sheet for the first
- 36:13Speaker 1: eleven for two decades, and he was captain in the
- 36:16Speaker 1: years two thousand and one two thousand and two. In
- 36:19Speaker 1: his later career, he played in the lower elevens, helping
- 36:22Speaker 1: to develop the young Optimists. Ali was a dedicated and
- 36:25Speaker 1: valuable committee member and as head of the men's sectioned
- 36:28Speaker 1: raised the standard of their training and playing ethos, culminating
- 36:32Speaker 1: in many promotions for the adult teams. Ali was also
- 36:36Speaker 1: an accomplished golfer and many of us had the pleasure
- 36:38Speaker 1: of playing with him over the years. Fogus as it's
- 36:41Speaker 1: called Folkeston Optimist Golfers in Scotland. He was the champion
- 36:45Speaker 1: twenty twelve and twenty twenty one, and he was the
- 36:48Speaker 1: OPTS Golf Champion ninety six and twenty seventeen. Ali was
- 36:52Speaker 1: loved and respected by teammates and everyone who had the
- 36:55Speaker 1: pleasure to know him. Our thoughts are with his family, Rosemary, Lizzie, Andrew,
- 37:00Speaker 1: Andy will and Ashley. Rest in peace, Ali Walls. So
- 37:05Speaker 1: that statement came from the chairman of the Folks and
- 37:08Speaker 1: Optimus Hockey Club, and so it's with a bit of
- 37:12Speaker 1: a heavy heart that I'm reading this out. I did
- 37:14Speaker 1: know Ali. I didn't know him very well. There are
- 37:16Speaker 1: so many hockey teams down there, as I say, but
- 37:18Speaker 1: he was a very friendly man, always willing to talk
- 37:21Speaker 1: about hockey, so he will be sadly missed. So on
- 37:26Speaker 1: a light to note. If you fancy going to watch
- 37:28Speaker 1: a hockey then get down to the Three Hills. So
- 37:30Speaker 1: a quick shout out for the Folks and Saints basketball
- 37:33Speaker 1: today the under eighteen's ladies are playing away at Colchester
- 37:37Speaker 1: against Essex Rebels. The under sixteen B team they're at
- 37:41Speaker 1: home against Essex Rebels. The under sixteen eighteen they are
- 37:46Speaker 1: at home against South End Scorpions. The under sixteen eighteen
