Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I get a team, ID your bloody terrific yesterday or
- 0:04Speaker 1: the other day or whenever you heard it. If you
- 0:06Speaker 1: heard it young Kelly Smith, who's a I guess I
- 0:10Speaker 1: could say fan of the show, listener of the show.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And Kel and I intersect at the gym. We high five,
- 0:15Speaker 1: we say a low to each other. We're not besties,
- 0:18Speaker 1: but we're certainly acquainted, and I think I can safely
- 0:21Speaker 1: say we like each other. And Kel said, when I
- 0:25Speaker 1: was doing a Q and a kind of call out,
- 0:29Speaker 1: could I come on and ask some questions? And I said, fuck, yeah,
- 0:33Speaker 1: saves me hosting. So she's put up her hand to host,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and she's back with me, Hi, Kel, Hi, Craig. It
- 0:40Speaker 1: feels only like a few minutes ago.
- 0:42Speaker 2: We were doing this momentarily momentarily interesting though. I was
- 0:48Speaker 2: kind of putting my hand up to ask other people's questions.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And then you said, give me fifteen and you can
- 0:54Speaker 2: come and interview me. And I thought, challenge, accepted, let's go,
- 0:58Speaker 2: well that that.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Is absolutely true you wanted to ask, and I went, well,
- 1:01Speaker 1: fuck it, you're pretty clever. I reckon you should, and
- 1:04Speaker 1: as I said last episode, I love what you've done.
- 1:07Speaker 1: These questions are really good, and I will say that
- 1:09Speaker 1: we're probably okay. I was excessively for both. So we're
- 1:13Speaker 1: going to do another five questions. We'll try and get
- 1:16Speaker 1: through them. I don't think you listeners mine though, but
- 1:20Speaker 1: Melissa mins Melsa, She's like, can you do them a
- 1:24Speaker 1: little bit shorter? So yesterday we're not going to go
- 1:28Speaker 1: through them again. But we spoke about a range of
- 1:32Speaker 1: different stuff like any single messages that are on point
- 1:36Speaker 1: in the fitness industry and ones that are missing the point.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And we spoke about why perhaps I'm more open and
- 1:43Speaker 1: vulnerable these days. And we also spoke about what I've
- 1:46Speaker 1: learned over the last ten years, what's been the biggest
- 1:49Speaker 1: takeaways or lessons, And also we chatted a bit about
- 1:52Speaker 1: my PhD. But question one for today is question six
- 1:58Speaker 1: on your list, kel and what is that question?
- 2:02Speaker 2: This question is and it goes back to what we've
- 2:06Speaker 2: previously mentioned, but what is it within yourself that has
- 2:10Speaker 2: led you towards what could be described as a life
- 2:13Speaker 2: of service?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good that's a good question. So do
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know what There's one thing that I hesitate to
- 2:24Speaker 1: talk about because I feel like I'm being disrespectful to
- 2:29Speaker 1: part of my journey and some people who are still
- 2:34Speaker 1: in a place that I'm not really that much in.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And that is my kind of my my theological background,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like my my you know, I grew up in a
- 2:45Speaker 1: Catholic church, but then I went and I spent quite
- 2:47Speaker 1: a quite more than a few years in other what
- 2:51Speaker 1: we would call fundamental Christian churches, very very biblically focused,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and I spent a lot of time reading, studying, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: basically Genesis to Revelation, first book in the Old Testament
- 3:07Speaker 1: through the last book in the New Testament and everything
- 3:10Speaker 1: in between, and trying to understand that I always had
- 3:13Speaker 1: a I always had what do I call it a
- 3:18Speaker 1: God curiosity, and I had a faith of sorts, but
- 3:23Speaker 1: it didn't it was kind of incomplete. I didn't really know,
- 3:27Speaker 1: you know, what that meant, but I did I wanted to, like,
- 3:33Speaker 1: for me, part of my deep dive into any kind
- 3:35Speaker 1: of faith or spiritual kind of path was really trying
- 3:41Speaker 1: to connect with something bigger than me, which you know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: some people call God, some people call the divine, some
- 3:47Speaker 1: people call like you know that kind of you know,
- 3:52Speaker 1: mystical not magical, but you know, insight, wisdom, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: the conduit to that that's bigger and better me. So
- 4:01Speaker 1: for me, you know, realizing that, like there was a
- 4:06Speaker 1: lot I didn't like about me when I was young,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and we've spoken about that, but I felt like when
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was in that that that kind of searching space,
- 4:17Speaker 1: that spiritual searching space, I actually liked me more because
- 4:22Speaker 1: I was less selfish and and less less about yeah,
- 4:33Speaker 1: less less about Craig. And I've always felt like the
- 4:38Speaker 1: more my life isn't about me, right, the more I'm
- 4:42Speaker 1: not focused on me. Yes, I need to I need
- 4:45Speaker 1: to eat, and I need to have a job and
- 4:46Speaker 1: make money, and I need to make sure that, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: there needs to be a level of focus on myself
- 4:50Speaker 1: so that I can manage me so that I'm good
- 4:52Speaker 1: for others. But I've always felt through that period, that
- 4:56Speaker 1: church period and beyond that I'm a better person when
- 5:00Speaker 1: I've got a purpose bigger than me and so that, Yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and I know when I'm helping people, when I'm serving people,
- 5:11Speaker 1: By the way, can I be an asshole? Of course
- 5:13Speaker 1: I can do I get trapped in ego and bullshit,
- 5:15Speaker 1: yes I do. But I know that genuinely when I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, doing something that it's not strategic. There's nothing
- 5:27Speaker 1: in it for me other than maybe to feel good, right,
- 5:30Speaker 1: But I'm not doing it even for that. I'm just
- 5:32Speaker 1: doing it because this person needs it. You know. Many
- 5:36Speaker 1: times people have said to me, how come you're helping,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and I go, because you need help, and they think
- 5:42Speaker 1: there's got to be another reason that doesn't And obviously
- 5:45Speaker 1: I can't do that for everyone, with everyone, and you know, yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I still get paid to do different shit. But these
- 5:53Speaker 1: days I would say of all of the things that
- 5:57Speaker 1: I do, you know, like speaking with people, helping people
- 6:00Speaker 1: doing you know, like on I won't even say who
- 6:02Speaker 1: for but we're recording this Tuesday night. Thursday night, I
- 6:05Speaker 1: got asked to do a talk for a school at
- 6:09Speaker 1: four pm to the teachers and they don't have a budget.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And I'm like, sure, I'll do it. And I'm not
- 6:17Speaker 1: doing it because makes me look good. I'm doing it
- 6:19Speaker 1: because hopefully, you know, I can help someone. And if
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm getting paid zero or five grand, they get exactly
- 6:29Speaker 1: the same quality of me, right, And for me, that's
- 6:33Speaker 1: really you know important, Like of course I'm going to
- 6:36Speaker 1: go earn money and do stuff, but also I want
- 6:39Speaker 1: to have at least a percentage of my life, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: I hope that gets bigger as the years go on,
- 6:44Speaker 1: where I'm just doing it because it's serving and it's
- 6:48Speaker 1: helping and you know, and I think also there's a
- 6:53Speaker 1: kind of wealth, and that's a spiritual wealth that that
- 6:59Speaker 1: kind of grows when you're not all about self service,
- 7:04Speaker 1: if you know what I mean that. I feel like
- 7:06Speaker 1: that was messy, but I I feel like I have
- 7:11Speaker 1: in This sounds so lame, but I'm going to say
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's not the right word, but it's close. I feel
- 7:16Speaker 1: like I have an innate calling to help people. I
- 7:21Speaker 1: think that's my purpose.
- 7:23Speaker 2: That's a beautiful thing, isn't it. And I don't think
- 7:27Speaker 2: it was messy how you described it, because you started
- 7:30Speaker 2: off by saying that you didn't want to be disrespectful,
- 7:32Speaker 2: and so it was very you were very selective in
- 7:35Speaker 2: the words that you were using and how you were
- 7:37Speaker 2: talking about it. But it also goes back to you
- 7:40Speaker 2: talking about how you said previously in the first episode
- 7:44Speaker 2: that living your values is quite often very hard, but
- 7:50Speaker 2: what you just described is exactly that, and it seems
- 7:54Speaker 2: like the way that you do it is that putting
- 7:59Speaker 2: yourself out. They're in service to other people leaves less
- 8:03Speaker 2: time for wondering about Craig, and that seems to be
- 8:08Speaker 2: the spot where I don't know, it's just the golden
- 8:13Speaker 2: point for you.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and honestly, and this is going to sound weird
- 8:18Speaker 1: as well, but I'm just going to say it, like
- 8:22Speaker 1: all the hate and hurt and echo chambers and online vitriol,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and it makes me sad. And I know it's not
- 8:31Speaker 1: gone away, but it makes me sad. And I just
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I know I'm an idealist, and I know that
- 8:38Speaker 1: you know it ain't going to happen anytime soon, if ever,
- 8:42Speaker 1: but imagine, imagine if we just had a world built
- 8:46Speaker 1: around love. Imagine imagine like imagine if you know, like
- 8:52Speaker 1: we just even when you think about the division between countries,
- 8:57Speaker 1: it's like we're literally killing other humans and rationalizing it.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I know that this is much bigger than this chat,
- 9:05Speaker 1: but god, I don't get it.
- 9:07Speaker 2: But anyway, it does make you think though, that if
- 9:10Speaker 2: if more people were being a bit of service and
- 9:14Speaker 2: actually leading with love and kindness rather than ego, where
- 9:21Speaker 2: could we be? You know, where could be?
- 9:25Speaker 1: But you know, one good thing, I think I think
- 9:28Speaker 1: a lot of people, not all people, but a lot
- 9:30Speaker 1: of people at their core can be fucking amazingly beautiful
- 9:36Speaker 1: and kind, and you know, like you know when someone's
- 9:43Speaker 1: really like fucked and somebody's like the amount of people
- 9:49Speaker 1: there might be two or three, it might be twenty,
- 9:50Speaker 1: but who often will come out of the woodwork and
- 9:53Speaker 1: go anything you need, Like, what do you need? How
- 9:56Speaker 1: can I help? And I try to be that for
- 10:01Speaker 1: as many people as I can practically, and like I've
- 10:06Speaker 1: met people that I how do I say this? So
- 10:11Speaker 1: people that I people approach me about people in their
- 10:15Speaker 1: life that are struggling with stuff, right, big, big, big stuff.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I can't do it all the time, but whenever
- 10:25Speaker 1: I can, I sit with those people and I go, look,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I'm the I don't know, I don't have the answers,
- 10:29Speaker 1: but like in that moment, I feel like when they go, oh,
- 10:35Speaker 1: here's a guy who's quite busy, who's got a bit
- 10:37Speaker 1: of a profile, who doesn't know me, and he's sitting
- 10:41Speaker 1: there and he's all about me, and I go, I
- 10:45Speaker 1: am all about you. I don't give a fuck what
- 10:47Speaker 1: else goes on for the next hour or so, nothing
- 10:50Speaker 1: else matters to me. For the moment, all that matters
- 10:53Speaker 1: to me for the moment, for this hour that we're
- 10:56Speaker 1: together is you. I'm not going to look at my phone.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I'm not going to crack a joke. I don't want you,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you don't owe me anything. I'm not special. I'm just
- 11:04Speaker 1: here because you need someone to be here. And maybe
- 11:08Speaker 1: I've got some thoughts and ideas that might be of
- 11:11Speaker 1: value or not, we'll see, but that anyone can do that.
- 11:16Speaker 1: You don't need to be a coach or a psychologist
- 11:18Speaker 1: or you can go. Look, I'm I'm just going to
- 11:22Speaker 1: sit with you and talk to you and look at
- 11:23Speaker 1: you and fucking be with you. You know, imagine if
- 11:27Speaker 1: we all just did that. Imagine, imagine, imagine I feel
- 11:33Speaker 1: like I'm banged on too long?
- 11:34Speaker 2: All right?
- 11:36Speaker 1: What about me? Going? Oh, this one will be quicker?
- 11:39Speaker 1: And then I talk for twenty minutes on the first
- 11:41Speaker 1: fuck I can't learn Harper. Question two.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Question two. So, with all of this, and I think
- 11:50Speaker 2: you may have touched on it with some previous answers,
- 11:54Speaker 2: but when did being accountable really clicking for you? So
- 11:58Speaker 2: that would be you know, living in alignment, walking me talk.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Okay, So the very very first time, the very first
- 12:10Speaker 1: time was when I started tracking slash diarizing everything I
- 12:18Speaker 1: did with my training. I'm not saying that was a
- 12:20Speaker 1: moment of enlightenment or great wisdom, but where I realized that,
- 12:26Speaker 1: so I started being accountable in terms of tracking my
- 12:30Speaker 1: food and my exercise and what I ate and when
- 12:33Speaker 1: I ate, and my sleep and coffee and tea and
- 12:37Speaker 1: supplements and all of that stuff. Where I started to create,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know, or try to create a protocol that worked
- 12:49Speaker 1: for me, and tried to understand by doing all of
- 12:54Speaker 1: these things and tracking all of these things and identifying
- 12:57Speaker 1: all of these things and being accountable in that everything
- 13:01Speaker 1: I did to my body, I wrote it down. I
- 13:04Speaker 1: didn't I didn't leave anything out. What that did was
- 13:10Speaker 1: it gave me a very steep learning curve about, at
- 13:13Speaker 1: the very least, how my body worked, How my body
- 13:17Speaker 1: responded to training in the morning versus training in the
- 13:20Speaker 1: night or the afternoon, How my body worked with you know,
- 13:26Speaker 1: egg protein versus chicken or beef, How my body worked
- 13:29Speaker 1: with two meals a day or three or four meals
- 13:32Speaker 1: a day's same calories but divided up how you know everything.
- 13:37Speaker 1: What time of day was best for me to do cardio,
- 13:40Speaker 1: What time of day was best for me even cognitively,
- 13:43Speaker 1: like when does my brain work best? What supplements was
- 13:48Speaker 1: I taking and what did I notice? Like I would
- 13:52Speaker 1: back in the day when supplements, you know, like I
- 13:54Speaker 1: used to take all these different amino as acids and
- 13:58Speaker 1: nothing illegal, everything you could buy over the counter, and
- 14:01Speaker 1: desicated liver and fucking but I would take thirty pills
- 14:07Speaker 1: a day. And I remember doing an experiment where I
- 14:11Speaker 1: stopped everything except food, so no supplements for two weeks.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I felt exactly the same. So I just ditched all
- 14:19Speaker 1: my all of the stuff, which clearly was doing nothing.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, dexicated whatever, ye.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Desicated liver, which sounds fucking disgusting, and it is, I'm sure,
- 14:31Speaker 1: but they were just no, no, no, it's not actually liver.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's like pills, pills, like dehydrated.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm surprised that wasn't doing anything for you, honestly.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, well I've probably had enough iron in
- 14:44Speaker 1: my diet without that. But yeah, So that was when,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you know, But then as I started developing businesses and
- 14:53Speaker 1: you know, I opened my first business at twenty six,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I needed to be pretty responsible and accountable. So that
- 14:59Speaker 1: was a steep learning. But I would say around my
- 15:02Speaker 1: mid twenties, I started to be a little bit more methodical, accountable, practical,
- 15:11Speaker 1: rather than just the freestyling fuck with that I was
- 15:14Speaker 1: until that point in time.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Well done, twenties is pretty early, isn't it to be
- 15:20Speaker 2: self aware and to lock in on that.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Well, you know, there were still moments, as we know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: a question. Oh this was an interesting question. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 15:33Speaker 1: this was I've was not ready for this question. Yep,
- 15:36Speaker 1: go on.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Really okay, So describe your favorite kind of person.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean, based on what I've been speaking about, you know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: no surprise, but people who just people who, like you said,
- 15:51Speaker 1: lead with love, people who you know, like people who
- 15:55Speaker 1: give without strategy or agenda or expectation, people who people
- 16:06Speaker 1: who live with gratitude and a level of self awareness
- 16:09Speaker 1: and humility. I know, that's you know whatever. But people
- 16:12Speaker 1: who love watching others, genuinely love watching others succeed, you know.
- 16:17Speaker 1: And people who, as Stephen Covey says and many other
- 16:24Speaker 1: authors over the years, but people who seek first to understand.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So people who are really interested in it, understanding the
- 16:32Speaker 1: person in front of them rather than pushing to be understood. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: give me attention, listen to me, understand me, meet my needs,
- 16:42Speaker 1: be what I need, fuck all that.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, like.
- 16:48Speaker 1: People who you know, it's like one of my favorite,
- 16:51Speaker 1: one of my top ten people in the world. And
- 16:54Speaker 1: I know a lot of people. Is Johnny that I
- 16:56Speaker 1: train in the gym, who you know and you've met
- 16:58Speaker 1: and you've seen probably hundreds of times at the gym
- 17:03Speaker 1: with me, you know, And here's a guy who's in
- 17:06Speaker 1: his seventies. You know, he's got an full disclosure so
- 17:10Speaker 1: you might want to put your fingers in years. But
- 17:11Speaker 1: he's got a bag for poo and a bag for wei,
- 17:13Speaker 1: and he's got a spinal cord injury, and he's got
- 17:16Speaker 1: a traumatic brain injury. And I fucking love him. And
- 17:22Speaker 1: he's just the best person. And he's just grateful, and
- 17:25Speaker 1: he's humble, and he's loving, and he's kind and he's
- 17:29Speaker 1: a sweetheart. And I just there ain't many people that
- 17:33Speaker 1: I think more highly of than him. And he's the
- 17:38Speaker 1: person that most people would walk past not even notice.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I've seen him working out a number of times,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and I feel like he radiates something that is like
- 17:52Speaker 2: a warmth. He's he's always got an acknowledgment. Well for me,
- 17:58Speaker 2: like I think I've given him a smile and a
- 18:00Speaker 2: hello whenever I see him, and he always seems very
- 18:06Speaker 2: approachable and very warm, and that is something that you
- 18:09Speaker 2: can't fake that.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And you know, sometimes I think, fuck, if
- 18:16Speaker 1: anyone had a reason to be grumpy and pissed off
- 18:18Speaker 1: and angry, it's not me, it's not me, it's that guy.
- 18:23Speaker 2: It's that guy. And he's not Yeah, yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 1: He's definitely not. All right. Question, Oh, we've got two
- 18:29Speaker 1: more to go. We're on a roll.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Two more on a roll. So in line with everything
- 18:35Speaker 2: that you give in service and how I guess available
- 18:40Speaker 2: you are to people, how do you know when to stop?
- 18:44Speaker 2: And I'm not talking about quitting. I'm just talking about
- 18:47Speaker 2: how do you know when it's time to pull back
- 18:49Speaker 2: and preserve something for yourself so that you do then
- 18:53Speaker 2: have things to give to others?
- 18:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, So what I wrote what I wrote, and
- 19:02Speaker 1: I'll expand on this because you you. I jotted down
- 19:04Speaker 1: a few ideas off your question. I wrote, when your body, soul, innate, wisdom,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and internal sat nav tell you for me? That's like
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'm getting like my body is telling me or my
- 19:19Speaker 1: subconscious or my you know that that internal sat nav
- 19:22Speaker 1: that wisdom that whatever that is, like, it's just no,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I just know it's intuitive, right, And I realized that,
- 19:35Speaker 1: and I think this is true for everybody you know.
- 19:39Speaker 1: There there are times when it's actually good for me
- 19:43Speaker 1: to be unproductive today. It's actually good for my overall
- 19:48Speaker 1: productivity and happiness and health to have a fuck all
- 19:53Speaker 1: day or even a fuck all week, depending on depending
- 19:57Speaker 1: on you know, your situation and where you're at. And
- 20:01Speaker 1: so I think that one of the things that we
- 20:07Speaker 1: do habitually, many of us, is we we kind of
- 20:13Speaker 1: block out all the inbound wisdom. You know. It's like
- 20:18Speaker 1: you've heard me so many times. Your body is buy
- 20:20Speaker 1: a feedback system. Your body's always telling you something. And
- 20:24Speaker 1: it might not be telling you you need to lose
- 20:26Speaker 1: weight or get fitter. It might be telling you, hey,
- 20:30Speaker 1: my nervous system's fucking fried. Could you fucking chill out
- 20:34Speaker 1: and go for a swim or just meditate, or like,
- 20:40Speaker 1: our body is always teaching us something or trying to
- 20:44Speaker 1: teach us something, and it might not be even about
- 20:47Speaker 1: the body. It might be about the chaotic mind or
- 20:50Speaker 1: the overloaded brain or so I know that there are
- 20:56Speaker 1: times when I kind of choose to be intentionally unproductive
- 21:04Speaker 1: because I know that's going to be good for my mental, emotional,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and physical health. And also I know that when I
- 21:12Speaker 1: turn up to do what I've going to what I've
- 21:14Speaker 1: got to do, I'll be better. Like sometimes, for example,
- 21:19Speaker 1: if I've got an afternoon gig and I've got to
- 21:22Speaker 1: talk for in the in the afternoon between one and five,
- 21:25Speaker 1: which is not uncommon, or one thirty and five, like
- 21:27Speaker 1: three or four hours, I will intentionally do fuck all
- 21:31Speaker 1: for the whole day before that. Sometimes, yeah, you know,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and I go because I just want to be brand
- 21:38Speaker 1: new when I go and stand in front of those people,
- 21:40Speaker 1: because three hours, Like think about talking for three or
- 21:44Speaker 1: four hours and being hopefully mentally focused at somewhere near
- 21:50Speaker 1: one hundred percent for the whole time and interesting and
- 21:53Speaker 1: engaging and building rapport and connection and being relevant and
- 21:58Speaker 1: been a great storyteller and creating an experience that people
- 22:01Speaker 1: want to be in and you know all of that. Well,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you can't turn up half fried and then do that.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You can't go. I got up at four, I did
- 22:10Speaker 1: a run, a swim, a workout. I've done nine podcasts
- 22:13Speaker 1: and so you guys are going to get the dregs.
- 22:15Speaker 1: You can't well I can't anyway, So I think strategic
- 22:20Speaker 1: energy management is crucial.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I like that. Strategic energy management.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're trying to manage your physical, mental, and
- 22:29Speaker 1: emotional energy.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good. Yeah, I'm going to use that.
- 22:35Speaker 1: It's only taken two podcasts and fucking nine and a
- 22:38Speaker 1: half questions. All right, let's do our last.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Ye okay, this is yeah, this one. I'm very curious.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I think I might know your answer, but I'm probably wrong.
- 22:47Speaker 2: So you can only do one exercise for the rest
- 22:51Speaker 2: of your life? What is it? Right?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Now? This is a hard question because I really needed
- 22:57Speaker 1: more information. But okay, so I'm going to tell my
- 23:00Speaker 1: tell you my rationale. So the question is, you can
- 23:04Speaker 1: only do one exercise for the rest of your life?
- 23:06Speaker 1: What is it?
- 23:07Speaker 2: Right? Yeah?
- 23:08Speaker 1: Now, well that if we're talking about well one, we
- 23:12Speaker 1: need cardiovascular fitness, and we need flexibility, and we need
- 23:17Speaker 1: strength and bone density and some muscle, and we need
- 23:20Speaker 1: balance and coordination and right, but if I can only
- 23:24Speaker 1: do one thing, how the fuck do I cover all
- 23:26Speaker 1: those bases? Right? So you probably thought I'm going to
- 23:29Speaker 1: say strength training. I'm not.
- 23:31Speaker 2: No, I didn't thint it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: What do you what do you think my answer is
- 23:35Speaker 1: going to be.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I think your answer might be walking.
- 23:40Speaker 1: No, okay, my answer is And again everyone, this is
- 23:44Speaker 1: just if you ask me in a month, I might
- 23:46Speaker 1: give you a different answer. Right, So this is not
- 23:48Speaker 1: set in stone. But I've given two answers. The first
- 23:56Speaker 1: one is kind of all the same ballpark surfing, paddling, kayaking,
- 24:05Speaker 1: or swimming. Now, let the exercise scientist explain the rationale.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Please think about surfing, for example, what are you doing?
- 24:16Speaker 1: You're balancing? What are you doing? You're using your arms
- 24:20Speaker 1: and legs, so coordination, timing, spatial awareness, where's the wave?
- 24:26Speaker 1: Where am I balance? Coordination? You're using muscular endurance because
- 24:31Speaker 1: you've got addle, paddle, swim, fall off swim for your board.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You're using strength because you've got to kick, and strength
- 24:38Speaker 1: upper body you've got to pull yourself through the water,
- 24:41Speaker 1: which so you're you're training your muscular system, your cardiovascular system,
- 24:47Speaker 1: your nervous system. You're getting fitness, cardio, fitness and strength
- 24:53Speaker 1: and muscular endurance. It is a total body workout. Obviously
- 24:58Speaker 1: not everybody can do that, but I'm just talking about
- 25:01Speaker 1: as a standalone thing. Also, very similar explanations for paddling
- 25:08Speaker 1: stand up paddling, which is great fitness, and you know
- 25:14Speaker 1: there's a lot of stand up paddle borders around where
- 25:16Speaker 1: I live, kayaking or canoeing, whatever, swimming, same thing, So
- 25:22Speaker 1: you're never going to be well, that's not true. I
- 25:25Speaker 1: was going to say, you're never going to be a
- 25:26Speaker 1: big muscular thing. But there are some kayakers who are
- 25:29Speaker 1: fucking jacked. So if I could only do one thing,
- 25:33Speaker 1: it would be one of those. But a close second
- 25:36Speaker 1: would be circuit based strength training. So that's where it's
- 25:41Speaker 1: a combination of we're doing strength training like a full
- 25:44Speaker 1: body workout, but we're moving from exercise to exercise, so
- 25:49Speaker 1: there's a muscular endurance and a strength component as well
- 25:54Speaker 1: as a real cardiovascular component. So I might do ten exercises,
- 25:59Speaker 1: I do a circuit, I do exercise one to ten,
- 26:01Speaker 1: then I'm back to exercise one. I go through three times,
- 26:05Speaker 1: give or take it to thirty or forty minute workout,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and I've trained my core, my lower back, my legs,
- 26:11Speaker 1: my shoulders, my upper back, my my chest, and I've
- 26:15Speaker 1: done a full body workout and my heart rate's been
- 26:17Speaker 1: elevated for thirty to forty minutes. So I'm glad I
- 26:22Speaker 1: don't actually have to do any of that. But in
- 26:25Speaker 1: this hypothetical scenario that you created, what do you think
- 26:30Speaker 1: about what I said surfing?
- 26:33Speaker 2: I mean absolutely I didn't even think of that. Like
- 26:37Speaker 2: walking just sounds absolutely lame as a suggestion. After that, Yeah,
- 26:42Speaker 2: I mean, look at Chris Hamsworth, he surfs, he's got
- 26:45Speaker 2: a decent rig Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Well, look at Kelly Slater, he's still in the top
- 26:49Speaker 1: ten in the world and he's intact. And I mean,
- 26:52Speaker 1: obviously there are some assumptions you can serf or you
- 26:55Speaker 1: have access to water and all of that. But if
- 26:57Speaker 1: you just look at me as an ex scientist, look
- 27:00Speaker 1: at surfers. Show me a good surfer who's got a
- 27:04Speaker 1: shit body. Oh wait, you know, the girls look amazing.
- 27:09Speaker 1: The guys look amazing. They're fit, they're strong, they're functional,
- 27:13Speaker 1: they've got incredible total body strength, core strength, balance, power, speed,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Like I said, timing, aerobic endurance. Yeah, and again that's
- 27:24Speaker 1: completely impractical. I acknowledge that everyone for most of us,
- 27:28Speaker 1: But based on Kelly's hypothetical, that is my answer. Hey,
- 27:34Speaker 1: thank you, we're gonna we're gonna say goodbye. Is there
- 27:38Speaker 1: anything you want to wrap up with us with or
- 27:41Speaker 1: are you Are we good to go and reset and
- 27:43Speaker 1: do number three?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, I'm just trying to figure out where to get
- 27:47Speaker 2: surfing lessons now.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. I'm not kidding it is it is actually amazing. Hey, everyone,
- 27:54Speaker 1: I hope you enjoyed that. We'll be back. I don't
- 27:57Speaker 1: know whether or not we're gonna by the way, Kel,
- 27:59Speaker 1: i'll tell you and everyone out loud, I don't know
- 28:01Speaker 1: if we're going to play these back to back over
- 28:03Speaker 1: the days or we're going to separate them. But nonetheless,
- 28:06Speaker 1: I hope there's some thoughts and ideas in there that
- 28:10Speaker 1: are of value, if not a little bit of information, inspiration, education, motivation,
- 28:15Speaker 1: something in that space. Thanks for listening, See you next time.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Thanks Kel, Thanks Greg,
