- 0:03like no. Other a place.
- 0:05Abandoned by time, haunted by legend and etched with the.
- 0:09Whispers of witches. Curses and something even
- 0:13darker, Locals say the land. Itself is cursed.
- 0:16Paranormal investigators won't enter.
- 0:18After dark. And those who do don't always
- 0:21come back the same. This isn't just a forgotten
- 0:24village, it's a living. Graveyard of Secrets.
- 0:28Welcome to Dogtown. If you dare our story.
- 0:32Begins in the early days of New England by the late 17th
- 0:36century, English settlers on Cape Anne were drawn inland,
- 0:40seeking refuge from marauding pirates and the.
- 0:43Threat of coastal raids? In 1693, families began moving
- 0:48to a high. Rocky.
- 0:49Plateau safely away from the shore, they cleared the dense
- 0:53forest for timber and. Pasture Establishing.
- 0:56What was then called the common settlement, the first inland
- 1:00community. Of Old Gloucester.
- 1:03Over the next decades, the settlement grew.
- 1:06By the mid 1700s, as many as 60 to 100 families lived in
- 1:11Dogtowns cluster of simple farms and cottages.
- 1:15Children's laughter and the ring of blacksmiths hammers once
- 1:19echoed where now only the wind is heard.
- 1:22Life on this upland was hardscrabbled.
- 1:24But free. The common settlement houses
- 1:27were humble. One story.
- 1:28Structures. Some made of.
- 1:30Sod or wood? With small gardens.
- 1:32And cow pastures. The people who dwelt here were
- 1:36Hardy Fisher. Folk and farmers, many of
- 1:38Dogtown's men marched off to fight in the Revolutionary War,
- 1:42and local lore even holds that some helped to Rd.
- 1:45General Washington across the Delaware River on that fateful
- 1:49night in 17. 76. For the women, children and old
- 1:53men left behind, Dogtown was a haven far from the conflict.
- 1:58Henry David Thoreau visiting long after.
- 2:00The War Rd. Of coming upon boulders.
- 2:03Scattered over bare. Hills and a peculiar desolate
- 2:06landscape unlike any other on Cape Anne, yet even in those.
- 2:10Early days. Dogtown had an.
- 2:12Otherworldly quality. The terrain itself.
- 2:15Set it apart. Great granic erratics littered
- 2:18the land left by ancient glaciers and uncanny poses. 1
- 2:22famous formation, the whale's. Jaw stood.
- 2:25Like the gaping mouth of a leviathan breaching from the
- 2:28earth. 2 Massive rock. Spires eerily.
- 2:31Resembling a giant. Whale's jaws.
- 2:33Poised to snap in twilight, the silhouettes of gnarled trees and
- 2:38boulders could play tricks on the mind.
- 2:40The isolation, the strange rocks.
- 2:43The thick woods. Dogtown's atmosphere was primed
- 2:46for mystery even from the beginning.
- 2:49Originally, this upland haven was simply called The Commons,
- 2:53but it would gain a darker nickname in time for a while.
- 2:56Though. Dogtown prospered modestly by
- 2:591750. Roughly 80 houses.
- 3:02Dotted the windswept Moors. Families eked out a living by
- 3:06grazing sheep and oxen on the common land, cutting timber and
- 3:11trading in the harbor town of Gloucaster a few miles.
- 3:14Away paths. Connected the little homesteads
- 3:17and a central Dog Town square as we now know it formed the heart
- 3:21of the community. In these years, Dog Town was.
- 3:24Poor but busy. A frontier.
- 3:26Village alive. With human voices.
- 3:29But that. Would not last.
- 3:32The American Revolution ended, and with it, the unique purpose
- 3:35of Dogtown began to fade by the early 1800s.
- 3:39The. Seas were safe once more.
- 3:42Gloucesters focus shifted back to its.
- 3:44Bustling fishing harbor and new roads opened along the coast.
- 3:48The rocky soil of. Dogtown yielded little and
- 3:51economic opportunity beckoned elsewhere. 1 by 1 the able
- 3:55families left loading wagons and heading for better farmland or
- 4:00moving down to the. Prosperous Ports.
- 4:03By 1815, Dogtown was unraveling. Only a stubborn few remained.
- 4:09War widows, Elderly couples, freed slaves.
- 4:13And Drifters with Nowhere. Else to go.
- 4:16And so the once lively common settlement fell into ruin.
- 4:20Abandoned houses. Collapsed or were.
- 4:22Scavenged for timber. Wild dogs left.
- 4:24Behind by departing owners roamed the overgrown lanes and
- 4:28feral. Packs.
- 4:29Their mournful howls at night only added to the settlements
- 4:32creeping dread. With the respectable families
- 4:35gone, Dogtown's reputation took a turn.
- 4:39The neighbors down in Gloucester began to whisper that.
- 4:42Those who stayed. Behind.
- 4:43Did so for. Sinister reasons by the 1820s.
- 4:48Locals called the. Place, Dogtown and some say.
- 4:51Because of those. Feral dogs hunting the Moors.
- 4:54Others say it is. A slur implying that it was a
- 4:57town only. Fit for dogs or the lowest of
- 5:01society? This is when Dogtown's legends.
- 5:04Truly took hold. Travelers passing through the
- 5:07abandoned village at. Dusk.
- 5:08Reported strange phenomena, distant booming sounds echoing
- 5:12across the hills with no. Clear source.
- 5:15And flickering ghost lights dancing among the.
- 5:18Trees as Gloucaster. Citizens heard tales of uncanny
- 5:22lights and noises. Fear of the deserted village
- 5:25grew. The impoverished women who
- 5:27remained in Dogtown, many without family scraping by on
- 5:31charity or odd jobs, became. Objects of gossip.
- 5:35In suspicion, people muttered that these reclusive inhabitants
- 5:39were practicing witchcraft and the lonely Uplands.
- 5:42What else, they reasoned, could explain the uncanny sounds and
- 5:46lights, the eerie misfortunes that seemed to emanate from
- 5:50Dogtown? By 1820, Dogtown was a ghost
- 5:54village in all but name. Only a dozen or so souls still
- 5:57lived among the sagging cabins. And cellar holes.
- 6:01These last. Residents were.
- 6:02A rough lot. The sorts of.
- 6:04People, 19th century society didn't know what to do.
- 6:07With. They were widowed or unmarried,
- 6:09women without means, eccentric old men and fugitive from life's
- 6:14disappointments, isolated and proud.
- 6:16They were the outcasts of Cape. Anne, and among them a handful
- 6:21of formidable women, gained infamy.
- 6:23As the so-called. Witches of Dogtown, These women
- 6:26likely never thought of themselves as true practitioners
- 6:29of dark magic, but they knew that.
- 6:31Others did. They skillfully played the part.
- 6:34Using superstition to extort a living from those.
- 6:37Who crossed their paths over? Time their names and deeds grew
- 6:42into Cape Anne legend. The most infamous was Thamazine
- 6:46Tammy Younger, remembered as the Queen of the Witches of Dogtown.
- 6:51Tammy Younger lived in a ramshackle Hut on.
- 6:53Fox Hill near. Brook on the.
- 6:55Village outskirts. By the 1820s, her home was known
- 6:59as the Fox Hill Homestead. It was a.
- 7:01Collapsing Shack. But inside Tammy and her aged
- 7:05aunt created an atmosphere of menace and mystery.
- 7:09Tammy was a formidable figure, Toothless.
- 7:12Wild haired. And sharp tongued.
- 7:14She told. Fortunes and hosted late night
- 7:17card games for Drifters. She was even said to entertain
- 7:21pirates and criminals. Who sought?
- 7:23Shelter in Dogtown, providing them with homemade rum and a
- 7:26safe. Hideout.
- 7:28But Tammys most infamous trick? Was highway robbery by curse?
- 7:33When carts laden with. Fish or firewood?
- 7:35Passed through Dogtown, Tammy would hobby out onto the road
- 7:38and glare at the. Teamsters with fierce.
- 7:41Sunken eyes and a gravelly. Voice.
- 7:43She demand a toll, maybe a few coins or.
- 7:46Share of their goods if the startled.
- 7:49Driver refused Tammy would threaten to hex him on the spot.
- 7:53According to legend, she and her aunt bewitched the oxen teams,
- 7:57causing the animals to halt in their.
- 7:59Tracks pay up. Or I'll curse you in your cargo.
- 8:03She'd croak superstitious travellers.
- 8:05Usually surrendered some fish or corn rather than risk.
- 8:08The Wrath. Of the Dogtown, which only then
- 8:11would Tammy. Supposedly release the.
- 8:13Oxen from her spell, allowing the journey to continue.
- 8:17It was essentially extortion, and it worked.
- 8:20Tammy Younger's intimidation tactics earned her.
- 8:23A fearful respect. Mothers and Gloucester would
- 8:26quiet naughty children by saying that Tammy will get you if you
- 8:29don't behave. When Tammy Younger died in 1829,
- 8:33her legend only grew. John Hodgkins, the Carpenter
- 8:37tasked with building her coffin, left the finished coffin in the
- 8:41workshop overnight. Before the burial.
- 8:43His family later reported feeling an unearthly chill
- 8:46emanating from the box. Misses Hodgkins refused to sleep
- 8:50under the same roof as Tammy's coffin.
- 8:53Tammy was laid to rest in Gloucester's third.
- 8:55Parish burial. Ground.
- 8:57But some say that her spirit never left Dogtown.
- 9:00Living with Tammy was her aunt. Lucy, Old Lucy George.
- 9:04Another reputed witch. Lucy George was elderly but.
- 9:08As crafty as her niece. She too, leveraged fear to
- 9:11survive. Lucy would lurk by the.
- 9:14Roadside and curse at passing wagons, muttering incantations
- 9:18until the drivers felt compelled.
- 9:20To toss her a few. Goods to make her go away, by
- 9:24all accounts. Lucy was as.
- 9:25Shrewd as Tammy and the two women formed a little empire of
- 9:29fried on Fox Hill. Another Dogtown character was
- 9:33Peg Wesson, an old woman whose legend is perhaps the most
- 9:37fantastical. Old.
- 9:38Peg was rumored to fly on a broomstick over the village at
- 9:42night once. The story claims that during the
- 9:44War of 18. 12 soldiers. Camped near.
- 9:47Gloucaster saw a huge black. Crow, circling overhead and
- 9:51suspecting a witch's trick, shot at it with a musket.
- 9:55Loaded with a silver. Button silver being a
- 9:58traditional charm against witchcraft, the crow fell from
- 10:01the sky beyond the trees. In the very next day, Peg Wesson
- 10:05was allegedly found nursing a mysterious wound when a doctor
- 10:09examined her leg. He extracted that.
- 10:12Same silver button from her flesh.
- 10:15To superstitious locals, it was proof that PEG had shape.
- 10:18Shifted into a bird and been brought down by that enchanted
- 10:22shot. Such tales cemented Peg's
- 10:25reputation as a witch who could turn into an animal at will.
- 10:29There were other so-called witches.
- 10:31Too, Molly Jacobs was known to read tea leaves until fortunes,
- 10:35but if a client refused to pay, Molly would threaten them just
- 10:39like Tammy and Lucy did by fortune telling, crafting herbal
- 10:43remedies and occasionally bullying those who passed.
- 10:46Through. These women survived on the
- 10:48fringe of society. Over time, the line between fact
- 10:52and folklore began to blur. The citizens of Gloucester came
- 10:56to sincerely believe that Dogtown.
- 10:59Was a cursed place. By the late 1820s, Dogtown's
- 11:03last inhabitants had died. Off.
- 11:05One by one, the infamous. Witches passed away.
- 11:09Some in their beds, some frozen in winter, and some possibly
- 11:14meeting violent ends in isolation, Dogtown became.
- 11:17Utterly deserted. And the little settlement on the
- 11:20hill had become a true ghost town.
- 11:23The last derelict houses of. Dogtown were torn down or fell
- 11:27to pieces by around 1840. 5 All that.
- 11:30Remained were stone cellar foundations, overgrown lanes and
- 11:35the persistent legends of the people who once lived there.
- 11:38The next century and more, the town would become a domain of
- 11:42folklore, a haunted place shunned by many.
- 11:45Yet irresistible to the curious. Even as nature reclaimed
- 11:49Dogtown. The ghost stories.
- 11:51Took on a life of their own. Locals.
- 11:53Swore that on certain nights, especially around Halloween, one
- 11:57could. See the ghostly figures.
- 11:59Flitting among the trees or hear the faint cackle.
- 12:02Of a witch's laughter. On the wind, electronic
- 12:05equipment has been known to malfunction in these woods in
- 12:08modern times, cameras refuse to hold.
- 12:11Focus. As if ghostly hands were
- 12:13meddling with them, one persistent legend speaks of a
- 12:16woman in black. This spectral figure.
- 12:19Dressed in old fashioned morning.
- 12:21Clothes has allegedly. Been spotted gliding silently
- 12:24between the rune cellar. Holes at dusk.
- 12:27Some say. She's the ghost.
- 12:28Of Tammy Younger or one of the other Dogtown witches doomed to
- 12:33wander the place she once. Terrorized.
- 12:35Others think she might be the spirit of 1 of Dogtown's
- 12:38grieving. Widows forever searching.
- 12:41For a husband. Lost at sea?
- 12:43The legends aren't confined to ghostly old women, however.
- 12:47Some of Dogtown's. Lore is positively.
- 12:49Feral the name itself, Dogtown, invites tales of monstrous
- 12:54canines, and the area does not disappoint.
- 12:57Early settlers told. Stories of unnaturally large
- 13:00wolves prowling the woods. The native Agawam people even
- 13:04believed their ancient ancestors.
- 13:06Had possessed heads like dogs. And that eating a certain local
- 13:10plant could transform a person into a dog.
- 13:13Like creature, these whispers lay.
- 13:16Dormant for centuries, but then came a chilling modern
- 13:19encounter. That revived talk of werewolves.
- 13:22On Cape Anne on March 17th, 1984, a night of a full moon, a
- 13:28man visiting from Boston claimed he saw something unearthly near
- 13:32the. Rocky Ledges.
- 13:33On the outskirts of Dogtown, in the silvery moonlight.
- 13:38He. Beheld A gigantic animal
- 13:40prowling the Cliff top. It moved.
- 13:42Like a predator. And looked roughly.
- 13:44Doglike, but far too big to be a stray dog or a coyote.
- 13:49The witness thought it resembled a Mountain Lion.
- 13:52Except that there. Are no mountain lions that live
- 13:55on Cape Anne? A few days.
- 13:57Later, gruesome evidence surfaced.
- 13:59A deer carcass. Found at nearby Cranes Beach,
- 14:02torn apart but not eaten as if killed for.
- 14:05Sport That same night, two different people reported a
- 14:06Gray. Monstrous dog Like animal That
- 14:08same night, two different people reported a Gray monstrous dog
- 14:11like animal That same night, two different people reported a Gray
- 14:16monstrous dog like animal opening across the.
- 14:19Road toward dog. Town before vanishing into the.
- 14:22Woods. The timing just after a full
- 14:25moon did also not go unnoticed. Talk of a werewolf or a.
- 14:29Surviving Wolf Pack. Swept the local.
- 14:32Rumor mill. Wildlife authorities.
- 14:34Found no explanation, but those who know Dogtown's folklore
- 14:37nodded knowingly. After all, hadn't the Agawam
- 14:41story said human forms could? Blur with beast.
- 14:44Perhaps 1 of Dogtown's old. Curses still had teeth.
- 14:49As if witches and werewolves weren't enough, Dogtown has
- 14:53acquired yet another bizarre chapter.
- 14:55In recent years. Hikers began stumbling upon a
- 14:58toy cemetery hidden in a thicket, a macabre collection of
- 15:02old dolls and stuffed animals left or hung among the trees.
- 15:06Tiny baby dolls with missing eyes.
- 15:09Threadbare teddy bears. Even clown figurines, all
- 15:12arranged as if in. Ritual display.
- 15:15No one knows who officially started this.
- 15:17Eerie. Assemblage or why?
- 15:20Some suspect pranksters or local teens drawn to Dogtown.
- 15:23'S creepy. Reputation, others whisper.
- 15:26About occult activities, The sight of weather beaten.
- 15:30Dolls swaying in the. Breeze certainly sends a.
- 15:32Shiver down the spine of even the.
- 15:34Bravest Explorer It's. The kind of unexpected discovery
- 15:38that makes Dogtown feel undeniably haunted.
- 15:42As if the forest itself. Were playing tricks with anyone
- 15:45daring enough to enter. Perhaps the greatest.
- 15:48Legend of Dogtown is Dogtown itself.
- 15:51Long after the last resident was gone, locals would warn each
- 15:55other. Don't you?
- 15:56Stray up to. Dogtown after dark.
- 15:58Stories circulated. That those who entered might
- 16:01lose their way. For hours or even days.

- 16:09The Trails. Twist in circles and without

- 16:18Many have felt that uncanny confusion first hand.
- 16:21A hike. That should have taken an hour

- 16:57forever intertwined. It's historical truth.
- 17:01That it was a community founded. For safety.
- 17:03On on hard times and abandoned, it lives on in the cellar
- 17:07stones. The records.
- 17:09Of who lived. And died there.
- 17:10The Legends. Of which?
- 17:12Is casting curses. Of ghostly apparitions.

- 17:30Tracing footsteps of. Colonists and vagabonds.
- 17:34You might feel a chill that has nothing to do with the.
- 17:37Breeze as twilight. Deepens, you may catch yourself
- 17:41glancing over. Your shoulder.
- 17:43Wondering if unseen eyes are watching from the briars.
- 17:46Perhaps it's mere legend. Or perhaps the spirits?
- 17:49Of Dogtown truly do remain keeping company with the frogs
- 17:54and crickets as they once did with the howling dogs.
