- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll
- 0:21everyone. Do I have a story for you?
- 0:24This is like a business founder update.
- 0:26If you guys don't care about me trying to build this business,
- 0:29there's always time stamps, always time stamps.
- 0:32The time stamps are part of our lore now.
- 0:34I swear every week, I'm not going to say every day anymore,
- 0:38but like every week, we still get comments even though there
- 0:40are chapters and time stamps in every description.
- 0:44OK, but you guys know Alex left at the end of last week.
- 0:47I'm taking over sales now for the company for the time being.
- 0:50I did all of these things when she left, right?
- 0:53Like I configured HubSpot into my inbox.
- 0:56I turned on e-mail forwarding from her e-mail to my e-mail
- 0:59this weekend. I also redesigned our entire
- 1:02website and I changed where we host it and all this stuff.
- 1:04So a lot has changed in the last like four or five days.
- 1:08This morning, I wake up, I'm checking my e-mail as I always
- 1:11do, and I literally have a three, OK.
- 1:14And normally I wake up and I have like, I don't know, 30.
- 1:17A lot of it is either press releases that come in overnight
- 1:20from, you know, the US or something, or like, newsletters
- 1:23that I subscribe to, whatever. But either way, I always have
- 1:25like, a full inbox. Anyways, I came to the
- 1:27horrifying realization that I have not received an e-mail
- 1:33since Thursday. Reminder, I have taken over
- 1:36sales for our company. I know it's only Friday is a
- 1:40business day and Monday is a business day, but we have active
- 1:42campaigns. I've been booking meetings, I've
- 1:45been sending proposals, I have contracts out that I'm waiting
- 1:48to get signed. I've been sending emails and I
- 1:51haven't received anything back. And I did think that was kind of
- 1:53weird, but it's just been such a busy few days because of the
- 1:56transition and just like several other things.
- 1:58So anyways, I I had this realization and I was like Oh my
- 2:02God. And then I realized our general
- 2:04inbox also has not been receiving emails since Thursday.
- 2:07Then I check in with the other girls, they have also not been
- 2:09receiving emails since Thursday. Our entire company e-mail has
- 2:14been down since Thursday and I had no idea why.
- 2:17I didn't even realize nobody else realized.
- 2:20We were all just going with the flow.
- 2:21So it's like 6:00 AM. I'm super tired.
- 2:24I'm so overwhelmed. I'm freaking out because I'm
- 2:26like day one of the job, day one of me taking over partnerships
- 2:30and this happens and I had no idea.
- 2:32And I'm like, what could people have been emailing us?
- 2:35What is out there in the abyss? I'm trying to book meetings and
- 2:38I'm thinking people aren't answering me and like, what if
- 2:40they are? And they think I'm rude?
- 2:42What if I'm losing opportunities?
- 2:43Like you just have no idea. So I'm freaking out.
- 2:46So I start like breaking down. I'm having like a full mental
- 2:49breakdown. I call my parents because I'm
- 2:50like, how else am I going to talk to anybody at this time?
- 2:53And they're in Canada. Obviously I'm in Australia.
- 2:55So I call them. I'm like sobbing to my parents
- 2:57on the phone. I'm freaking out.
- 2:58My mom's like, just wait until you talk to your brother because
- 3:01my brother is a software developer and they're like, just
- 3:03wait. He'll probably be able to figure
- 3:05it out. Like honestly, what tech
- 3:07problems have you had that you haven't been able to figure out?
- 3:09And like she is right because between Shawn, my husband, who
- 3:12has like so many friends that work in tech and do like IT
- 3:15stuff and whatever, and like my brother being a software dev and
- 3:18just like in general, like all the forums, all the YouTube
- 3:20videos you could watch, like I had tried everything up until
- 3:22this point, but still she was like, just calm down, it'll be
- 3:24OK. And I was like, you don't
- 3:26understand, like whatever, how am I supposed to focus?
- 3:28Like I was having like a mental breakdown, but you know, when
- 3:30you're just in a headspace and you're just in a time in place
- 3:33where you just cannot handle it. So I just had like a full on
- 3:37mental breakdown. And then anyways, a couple hours
- 3:39later, I get on to my brother and I'm like, I need you to help
- 3:42me. I tell him what's going on.
- 3:44I'm not kidding. We're not even, you know,
- 3:46together. Like this is over.
- 3:47Text takes him not even 5 minutes to figure out what
- 3:51happened. It was something related to like
- 3:52me switching over our hosting for our website that I did over
- 3:56the weekend. It wasn't even anything related
- 3:58to like getting Alex out of the business or her inbox or
- 4:01anything. It was literally like me
- 4:02redesigning the website and he's like, Oh yeah, all you have to
- 4:05do is, you know, input this into your new host.
- 4:08So I did it. Emails again, emails again.
- 4:11So, you know, I had a mental breakdown for no reason and my
- 4:14mom was right. So moral of the story, listen to
- 4:18your mom within reason, but listen to your mom.
- 4:20With that being said, sign up to our new newsletter.
- 4:23It did launch. Oh God, this is so classic.
- 4:25I forgot to tell you guys this yesterday.
- 4:26This is so this is so me. This is so me.
- 4:30I'm such a Sagittarius. Like I just go, go, go and I
- 4:34just, I don't know. I just, I'm not detail oriented.
- 4:37OK, so we relaunched the newsletter on Friday and it
- 4:41looked so good and the content was really good.
- 4:43We send it out and it has a big banner at the top with our old
- 4:47branding says infinite scroll when we have completely not only
- 4:51just like rebranded in general, but like the name is different,
- 4:53the colors are different. And I was like, of course, of
- 4:56course. So we're calling that our soft
- 4:58launch. So subscribe to our new
- 5:00newsletter because I promise all the branding and everything will
- 5:02be actually accurate on Friday and that will be our hard
- 5:05launch. OK, the first way that I have
- 5:07for you guys, this actually happened around a week ago, but
- 5:11I still wanted to report on it. It's a bit of industry news, but
- 5:15Live Nation Urban has launched a creator network catering to
- 5:19Black creators. Live Nation Urban is a
- 5:22subsidiary of Live Nation Entertainment, which is an
- 5:24American multinational entertainment company.
- 5:27I'm sure many of us know what Live Nation is.
- 5:29They managed ticket sales for a lot of concerts and other kind
- 5:32of like live entertainment across the world.
- 5:34Live Nation Urban focuses specifically on hip hop, R&B,
- 5:38and gospel. On July 25th, it was reported
- 5:40that Live Nation Urban would be collaborating with Breaker,
- 5:43which is a creator marketing and payments platform based in
- 5:46Atlanta, GA to launch the Live Nation Urban Creator Network.
- 5:50So Breaker has reportedly been a game changer for many creators.
- 5:54Breaker Pay, which is, you know, part of Breaker, has been a
- 5:57really powerful tool for creators to ensure that they get
- 6:00paid. Through this platform, creators
- 6:03are stationed to receive their compensation within 48 hours,
- 6:06which definitely would help alleviate the stress of having
- 6:09to follow up with brands and other collaborators for payment.
- 6:12Somebody needs to make that for media.
- 6:15The network bills itself as a quote, exclusive network of
- 6:18content creators collaborating with the biggest names in music,
- 6:21entertainment and lifestyle brands.
- 6:23But at its core, the network is a tool for Black creators to
- 6:26scale their reach and impact while also tapping Black
- 6:29consumers. From a business standpoint, it
- 6:31has become increasingly prevalent when it comes to
- 6:33promoting music events, cultural moments and concerts.
- 6:36So it feels like moving into the creator space is a necessary
- 6:40decision. This is from Forbes quote.
- 6:42The business model is dedicated to forging brands that are
- 6:45seeking to tap into black consumers, an act that has been
- 6:48long-awaited by black consumers who have pondered on
- 6:51representation amid the ad campaigns of non black-owned or
- 6:54centered brands. Forbes spoke with Malcolm Gray,
- 6:57the VP of Marketing and Partnerships at Live Nation
- 7:00Urban to understand the purpose of the network.
- 7:02In the conversation, Gray explained how important it is
- 7:05for companies to lean into micro and mid creators instead of just
- 7:09those macro influencers. This also allows Live Nation
- 7:12Urban to tap into cultural events in a more authentic way,
- 7:15according to the press statement from PR Newswire.
- 7:18Quote. Think a brand wants to activate
- 7:20around Juneteenth, or product launch at an HBCU in Atlanta, or
- 7:25a digital campaign tied to the BET Awards?
- 7:28LNU can now curate, execute and amplify with precision and
- 7:32speed. This is more than influencer
- 7:33marketing. It's cultural media as a service
- 7:36with reach, narrative control and conversion power all under
- 7:40one roof. So I know that those examples
- 7:43are kind of like cultural moments in time, but they are
- 7:47being clear that this network will be seeking like a sustained
- 7:50year round effort quote. What they're building isn't
- 7:53conditional on the corporate diversity trend cycle.
- 7:56It's a market tested mechanism to drive real results.
- 8:00Whether that means selling tickets, pushing a product, or
- 8:02activating A voter base. The network is equipped to move
- 8:05audiences to action. And that's something brands need
- 8:08every day of the year, not just when black culture becomes
- 8:11marketable. This is all just so cool and I
- 8:14love these initiatives and I really love how we're looking at
- 8:17creators and the creator economy as real media.
- 8:21These are scalable endeavors in this space that are kind of
- 8:25bringing that legitimacy to this niche and to these creators.
- 8:29Because at the end of the day, like so many creators are
- 8:31creating their own like a mini media brands off their platforms
- 8:35and they're so powerful and their reach is honestly probably
- 8:38a lot bigger than a lot of traditional media these days.
- 8:41So yeah, it's very, very cool. OK, the next right that I have
- 8:44for you guys is about this Spooners quote UN quote press
- 8:47tour that is taking place on YouTube.
- 8:50So came across the story on TikTok from a user called
- 8:53Claudine's corner. In this TikTok, she talks about
- 8:56how she's obsessed with the Spooners press tour.
- 8:58For those unfamiliar with Spooners, it is a short film.
- 9:01It was published on YouTube to the Mico Brothers channel on
- 9:04July 9th is accumulated over 500,000 views at the time of
- 9:08recording. OK, so this is the plot of the
- 9:10film. According to IMDb quote, Lydia
- 9:13dreaming of a Prince Charming grapples with adulthood good and
- 9:16loneliness, ultimately connecting with Matt, who offers
- 9:19paid hugs. To promote the short film, the
- 9:21cast and crew have been doing a quote UN quote press tour on the
- 9:23Mico Brothers YouTube channel. They've essentially recreated
- 9:27every online show that actors and celebrities go on to promote
- 9:31a film product or a brand. Some examples include a remake
- 9:35of Wired's auto complete interview G QS 10 essentials and
- 9:39varieties actors on actors. These videos have gone on to get
- 9:42hundreds of thousands of views and not only are people
- 9:46engaging, but it's doing exactly what a press tour is meant to
- 9:49do, like get people to go and watch the short film I.
- 9:53Didn't even know what Spooners was.
- 9:54This was the first video I saw and I was like well what is
- 9:57various actors and actors sat there watched the whole thing.
- 10:00I laughed and I proceeded to watch every other video that
- 10:04they had relating to Spooners. Not Spooners, but just all the
- 10:08other interviews. Users went on to flood
- 10:10Claudine's comment section with support of the film and the
- 10:13press tour. 1 user wrote quote guys, Spooners is very good.
- 10:17Don't forget to actually watch it.
- 10:19Another wrote, you've convinced me to watch these and it.
- 10:22So people are loving the press tour for a number of reasons.
- 10:25First, the videos are funny, but on a deeper level, social media
- 10:29users love to feel like they're kind of in on this joke and Gen.
- 10:33Z loves referential humor. We know that.
- 10:36So the strategy of this press tour definitely leans into this
- 10:40by mimicking these existing series.
- 10:42It's just really creative and you know, we don't see a a lot
- 10:45of creativity and press tours anymore.
- 10:47I know this this is kind of like a fake press tour, but you know
- 10:49what I mean? Like when we do see authentic
- 10:51press tours, there's not a lot of creativity.
- 10:53There's a lot of these attempted, like gotcha viral
- 10:57moments, and this almost like flips that on its head.
- 11:00It's really creative, It's really funny.
- 11:02You guys should definitely go watch some of these.
- 11:04OK, the last story that I have for you guys, this is like an
- 11:06industry episode. It's also YouTube and film
- 11:10related, but there is a documentary set to be released
- 11:13about the YouTube group Dude Perfect in theaters.
- 11:18So we aren't super familiar with Dude Perfect, but they're an
- 11:21American sports and comedy content group based out of
- 11:23Texas. There are five members, and they
- 11:26were all former college roommates out of Texas A&M
- 11:29University. As their website explains, quote
- 11:325 dudes, a camera, and a friendly bet.
- 11:35That's how Dude Perfect was born.
- 11:37Since then, it's grown into a global phenomenon, reaching
- 11:40millions of fans worldwide with the epic antics you know and
- 11:42love. But there's more to do perfect
- 11:45than just having fun. We're about giving back,
- 11:47spreading joy, and glorifying Jesus Christ.
- 11:50According to Reddit threads, the group seems to be particularly
- 11:53popular among preteen boys. They're also the 51st most
- 11:57subscribed to YouTube channel on the platform.
- 12:00They have 61 million subscribers.
- 12:02Anyway, it was recently reported by Bloomberg that Regal, the
- 12:06second largest movie theater chain in the US, will be showing
- 12:09Dude Perfect the Hero Tour, which is a documentary that
- 12:13follows the Youtubers and documents their various
- 12:15performances across the United States.
- 12:17According to Bloomberg quote, it will be released on more than
- 12:20800 screens across the USUK, Western Europe, and Australia.
- 12:24The film will run for two weeks starting September 26th but can
- 12:28be extended. OK, this story is obviously a
- 12:30little bit random for us to be reporting on, but I think it's
- 12:33important because it shows how Hollywood is having to turn to
- 12:36the creator economy for ongoing relevance and engagement.
- 12:39Also, I don't know if we've ever seen a creator driven film or
- 12:44like documentary about creators in theaters.
- 12:48I don't know off the top of my head I can't think of one.
- 12:52I'm sure you guys will be in the comments naming some but not
- 12:56that I know of or that I can remember.
- 12:58Bloomberg continues quote Movie ticket sales are about 25% below
- 13:02their pre pandemic level and the number of wide releases is down
- 13:06to. Theaters have dabbled in TV
- 13:08shows, sporting events and concert documentaries with mixed
- 13:11results. Now, like Hollywood studios and
- 13:14talent agencies, they are turning to YouTube for
- 13:17inspiration. You know, where they need to
- 13:19turn to inspiration as well. Reality TV, OK, we need to have
- 13:24places where groups of reality TV fans can congregate and watch
- 13:30like binge watch. Like say we're going to watch
- 13:32the 1st 5 episodes of season 3 of Vanderpump Rules in this
- 13:37theater. I mean, OK, five, that's a lot
- 13:39actually. That's like 5 hours, the first 3
- 13:41episodes, let's say. And just do that incrementally
- 13:44every single week. Like everybody can binge watch
- 13:47the show together. How good with that being you can
- 13:49have like popcorn and like the movie theater feel.
- 13:52Oh my God, I I've just come up with a concept turn to the pop
- 13:56culture fans. There's so little for us in
- 13:58terms of experiential moments. Like that's what we need and
- 14:03that's who's going to spend the money because we're stands.
- 14:06I came up with an idea. Nobody take it.
- 14:10OK, that is it for me to scroll today.
- 14:12Guys. I know this is a bit of a random
- 14:14episode, but, you know, sometimes we just got to throw
- 14:16in that kind of like industry news.
- 14:18Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 14:20Annabelle will talk to you guys tomorrow and I will talk to you
- 14:23guys on Thursday with hopefully a fully functioning inbox.
- 14:27OK, bye.
