- 0:06SPEAKER_04: If we only had video folks, you watch your pastor busting some moves in the podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Mike and Kelly don't even know what's going on.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: I can hear if I was listening.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: We're ignoring him.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Don't make me feel like I'm at home, Mike.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: You're so tame.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Hey.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: They're all married in here.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Mike, you look so tame.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I know I'm like, what is he doing?
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Are you booth?
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: You going back to the boot?
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Spray?
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Spray?
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Pool.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: Pool.
- 0:35SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: You just had the pool a lot?
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: Or what are you doing?
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: I usually don't go to the pool.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Ever all summer?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Like you've not been there?
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Why did you go in the last time?
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: So the week that it turned 100 degrees in September, you decided to go to the pool.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: All of a sudden you felt like he did send me a picture a couple Mondays ago of him out bathing.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Totally mouth.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Listen, the sun is good for you.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: I don't care what anybody says.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: It's good for your soul.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: What what why the change of pace?
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: I'm interested.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: Like, why all of a sudden you're like, his wife?
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Are we going to edit this?
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Nope.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Nope.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: It's being recorded.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Betty, tell me I'm wrong.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: Tell me I'm wrong.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: She was actually the one that got me going.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: So before she went back to school.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: You guys were gonna record.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: And now you're like, I'm hooked.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: It's relaxing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: That's why you're gonna call it every 30.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: So there's nobody at it.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: There's nobody.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: Like the other day I was there, I was the only person there.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: The Columbia pool, which I'm assuming closes this week.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: But if I go get the girls from there's like three ladies that have been there every day at two o'clock.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: We've taken our granddaughter to splash pad.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: We're the only one there.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: That's nice.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So cute.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: That's very cool.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: We're not here to talk about Harlow because that could take up a long time.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: All right, let's spend the rest of the hour talking about grandkids.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: I'm just kidding.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: TB number two great grandchild coming.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Great grandma.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Great granddaughter.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's surreal, you know.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like because you get there a lot faster than you expected.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Seemed like yesterday she was just a little Yeah.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: You've lived through two generations of children, and now you're on the third.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: I think that about my grandma too.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Because she now has three great grandchildren.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Great great.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Wait.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Jake is a great grandchild.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: My grandma has great great.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Three great greats.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Which is to me, I mean, th there's times that I it really I was like, this is just it's the grace of God, you know, that I get to be here to see that many generations.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: So I mean her grandma's in her 90s, so she's 91.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: She's kicking too, she's not going out anywhere anytime soon.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: It just really makes you, I think, be more appreciative of the uh heritage that you have.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:56SPEAKER_04: So it's very cool.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Do they call you great, Grandpa Mike?
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Uh wait, do they talk Papa?
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: Or Papa Great.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: Papa Great, that's better.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I feel as like you say that in my mind, I see Papa Smurf.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Kelly.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: A tan papa smurf.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Papa Smurf.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Your little red hat on.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Well, it's officially the end of the summer.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Officially end of the summer.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Mike's at the pool.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: And we're wrapping up in the summer.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: What?
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Again, September 21st.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: I did not know this information.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Summer series.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: You're talking about series.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: Summer's officially over the first day I get in the school bus.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: No, it's you're dying in that school bus this week.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: It's horrible.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: I can't believe the kids can be driven in it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: They look miserable by the time we get off the bus.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: So I have a question.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Didn't have anything to do with 1 Corinthians.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: So what we've been talking about?
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: Have we officially done away with daylight savings?
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: I feel like they voted on it five years ago and never did anything.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: I thought they just this last year.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: It probably will never happen.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: There's a good argument for like all the crunchy moms, which in my mind, we stay on whatever the time is.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, this current one.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Don't fall back.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Because that's when it gets darker.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: So, in my opinion, we should say right here.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Sweet spot.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: So I see it when because it just was voted not long ago.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: This year, this summer.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: So then, like, all the crunchy moms are like the fall back one is better because of the way the sun rises and falls, just the Cadian rhythm, yada yada yada.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, we should stay where the daylight is longer.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, so I gotta ask this.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: What's a crunchy mom?
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Like natural.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Shelly's kind of a crunchy mom.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, a crunchy mom, yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: But not but like the crunchy.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: I've never heard of the crunchy mom at the time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I like crunchy peanut butter, so that's where I was going.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Like some people like a smooth, I like it crunchy.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Crunchy raisin.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Crunchy.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Everything organic.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be able to get it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Crunchy and everything homemade.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: We have some.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: I've never heard of it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: We're not that crunchy.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Shelly's not that crunchy.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: You're crunchy, I think crunchy.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We buy our eggs at the store.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Yes, and you don't have animals living in your backyard.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: That would not be happening.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: No.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: Never heard of cringy moms.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: No, crunchy moms.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Crunchy moms.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: We better give it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: We need to create a crunchy small group, anyways.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I don't want to be in it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, all of the things that you're talking about.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: Sean always goes the crunchy circle.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: I will let them cook for me, that's for sure.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: And so it's good.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: So we are ending uh this well, not ending, ending our summer series.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: Like uh Paul ends uh his books like we end church.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: Talking money, talking money at the end.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: Talking money at the end.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: And then he, you know, he he talks money and then says a few encouraging words.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: So like we we do the same thing, right?
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: You know, talk about money and like encourage people.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: And he's like, I think what Paul's addressing is again, li lifestyle of generosity, right?
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: He's not he's not just saying like, hey, be emotional givers.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: He's saying, guys, really be intentional when it comes to giving and being generous, like just like you want to be intentional on loving your neighbor or intentional on you know being kind.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Like be intentional uh on being someone that is uh generous, you know.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And you know, for the American church, like don't just don't just give when you feel inspired, but like build generosity into you know this these rhythms of your life.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's the point of what Paul's making.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: So I'll give you my five P's for uh being a church.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: So if you've ever heard of the five P's, proper planning prevents poor for poor performance.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Proper planning proper planning prevents poor performance.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So say that five times.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I was just thinking put it on a t-shirt.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: My little ditty for giving Diddy?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: I can't.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Jeez.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: I know exactly what Jamie's brain is thinking.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I know he's in jail, is what I'm thinking.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: So he thinks that song that.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Oh no, I was going with by Jack and Diane.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, little diddy about Jack and Diane.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Give us a little ditty about Mike and So it's prayerful, planned, prepared giving prevents pressured giving.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Let me say it again.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Prayerful, planned, prepared giving prevents pressured giving.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Folks, this is what he's doing at the pool right here.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, wake up and go, you know what, what did we do a lot last night?
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: P.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: What could I do?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: What could I make of peas?
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: I really always go to like potty talk for some reason.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Peace, peace.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Peace.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, I won't go there, I won't go there.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: This is like a whole nother podcast, but pressured giving is a good topic to be a good thing.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: It's a great topic.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously, I want to know I did zero research on this chapter, by the way.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Um why is it specifically that they're giving a a um tie their money to the church in Jerusalem?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Do you know?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: I've I'm gonna go with you know why Papa Smurf.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: You know why?
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Why I know you know why?
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Well we see in the book of Acts.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Remember how everybody sold they sold all their belongings and gave, which actually created uh them to become impoverished because they didn't have any assets.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: So there was bene it was a good benevolent move on their heart, you know, good heartfelt move.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: And it was kind of an emotional move too.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: But if you study it, what happened is it created a level of poverty.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: And then so then that's why Paul was taking up these collections to help them so they're gonna because they c became in this.
- 8:48SPEAKER_04: Well, persecution as well, probably would have caused it.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: I mean he got stopped and thinking they were still under Roman tyranny, and so it wasn't.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: They were paying heavy taxes in especially in Jerusalem.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: And uh they got the meaning of jobs.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: And the church is being added.
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, the church like overnight obviously growing rapidly.
- 9:09SPEAKER_04: And so the financial need the mother church.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: So kind of thing.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, so because it says here, I'll just read verse to you, on the first day of each week, you should each put aside a portion of the money you have earned.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: Don't wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: When I come, I will write letters of recommendation for the messengers you choose to deliver your gifts to Jerusalem.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I I love how Paul, you know, instantly moves into these five verses, you know, five through nine, which to me are kind of the um, you know, there's uh, you know, just like i in every chapter, this is this is like there's statements and and things that I think he's addressing, especially in his final instructions, you know, like I'm visiting, uh, you know, after I come to Macedonia, I'm gonna travel through, perhaps I'll stay there a while.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And he's like giving plans, right?
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: But then verse nine, he says, There's this wide open door for great work here, although many oppose me.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I I just you know, Paul's talking about these these great opportunities, but in typical Paul fashion, he's not afraid to say, with great opportunity comes great opposition.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: And I think for so many people, and we addressed this even this, you know, last week in chapter 15, we we're so afraid to talk about the hard things that we think if we can avoid these and we can make people believe that following Jesus is easy or a better way, and I agree it's a better way, but it doesn't mean everything's gonna just work out.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, again, I've I've told this story several times, but like, you know, when when you feel like something has happened or a blessing has happened, and you know, a lot of times people are afraid to share that because of what people say, like, oh, this is happening, of course that happened in your life.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: You always get that, or it always seems to work out for you that way.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: And so there's this mindset that as a follower of Jesus, things become easier, to which we would probably say the opposite, right?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Like with these opportunities, there's now more opposition.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: So Paul's not saying, like, wow, look at these open doors.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: These are incredible.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: He's saying with these open doors comes a lot of opposition.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: And so I don't for some reason I don't know why the churches uh like a like where the mindset came in, like, oh, uh no, it's the opposite of that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if that's a prosperity thing, I don't know if that's a you know, the faith movement, you know, thing that happened where it's like, man, if you got opposition, you must not be doing something right.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: And it's like I would say the opposite.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: If you don't have opposition, you're probably not a threat.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, no, I think you're absolutely right.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of that came through you know, spiritually, that's what I grew up in, was the kind of the word of faith prosperity movement type of thing.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: And that's what absolutely what it was.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: If there was anything, you know, challenging or trials or anything in your life, it was because you know, you either weren't believing or you know, you did something wrong, you had sin in your life, all those things.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: And it's it's you know, Jesus said in this life you're gonna have what?
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Trouble.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Trouble.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: He was also crucified.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: And he was crucified.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: So according to that, he asked us to crucify ourselves.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: That ideology, or I hesitate to even call it a theology.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: That ideology is Jesus had sin in his life.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: I mean, did it just probably come from men being men and women being greedy?
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: It it came from taking a small portion of scripture and making it say what you want it to be.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: There's there's uh well what's the term I'm looking for?
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: Trajectory hermeneutics is where you take something and make it go beyond what it's actually the basis of it is to make it fit either a culture or an ideology.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like with Christ, all things are possible.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Or you know, Philippians 4 13.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I can start I can do all things in Christ.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: And then water, you're going to die.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Well, the one I heard a lot was, you know, God will give you the desires of your heart, but if you read that within in context, God's going to give you the desires of your heart because your heart has been consumed with his desire.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: That's the context.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: Context matters.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: We just talked about that on She Wakes.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: I heard someone recently just talk about uh all of you know they processed the blessings of God in their life and uh shared all with all those blessings, which most people see the blessing part, but what they don't see is the trial that I had to go through that made it a blessing.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: I also don't think we see the trial as a blessing.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Well, no, that's yeah, yeah.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: No, there's a combination.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: That's what he was saying.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I think if you're if there becomes opposition, I think we thank God for the open doors.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: And then if there's opposition, we think he's closed them.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Whereas it's like you may not have closed that door.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: You just might have to do some You have to work.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: You have to be consistent.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Opposition doesn't mean the door's closed.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: The Lord spoke to me five years ago that this was gonna happen.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I don't understand why it's not happening.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Well, it's because you're praying the desires of your heart, and those desires are deceitful.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: You ask for example, like you know, you ask and receive not because you ask wrongly.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: The Dream Big campaign, like, you know, we increased our offering, you know, we increased what we were doing, you know, above and beyond our tithe, obviously.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: I've had more things break since I've done that.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: I've given more money away to broken things, and I'm like, God, are you kidding me right now?
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: Like so have we.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: So I'm not, I mean, you hear the stories of like God's return this, God's return that.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: I'm like, I look at my payment, my car, not my tithe, but my dream big payment that I'm making right now.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: I'm like, all right, Lord, you I like I what's gonna break after I give this check?
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: But I'm like, I'm gonna just be faithful and trust you.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: And like, not that like, you know what I mean?
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: It's like it's just like, what in the world?
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: And it would be easy to be like, ah, we'll put that on pause right now.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: I need to fix this.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: How about that state farm check though?
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: I know, let's go.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: And so, and uh kind of thing.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Or it's it's like somebody that maybe starts coming to life community, you know, recently or within the last year or two that they've not seen what it was the price that especially YouTube paid 15, 16 years ago.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: You know, they don't see that part of the state.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: No, we didn't have an income when we planned at the church.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: Or their pastor used to uh um uh shingle.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: No, what do you roof?
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, he did roofs.
- 15:51SPEAKER_04: Pastor Jamie on a roof.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: You mowed yards too, didn't you?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Sure did.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Did you mow a yard?
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: With Dame Meyer, yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: He worked at the alternative school in Grand City because we needed some money.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: So if anybody needs a yard mowed, you know.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: He said, I love to mow a grass, I will mow your yard.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, therapy, right?
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: That's really what it's a hundred.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: Closed door doesn't mean that's the thing is that people a lot of times they don't see the sacrifice that, you know, they only see the the success.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah in there and behind every success there's always sacrifice.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: If it's true success, if it's not just inflated.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: You know what I always say?
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Behind every successful man is a surprised woman.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: No, most women aren't surprised.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Because guess what?
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Most women are the ones who got you there.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: Here we are in She Wakes.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Welcome, you guys.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: What are you going to talk about?
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: I told Pastor Jamie the other day, I said, Hey, listen, you know, if we continue on with the weekly podcast that we do, I go, I'd like to have Jamie and Kelly on it every week.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Every week?
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Just the dialogue is great.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: You know what is so true?
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Is like when behind every success, I can't talk, successful man, but it's like, no, because we are a partnership because God put us together.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: I shouldn't be surprised if Jamie's succeeding.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: I should want him to succeed because then he succeeds for my entire household.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Like that same with me.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: He should want me to succeed because I'm ex I'm succeeding for our entire household or for our marriage.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Like that should never be a surprise.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Say that again.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: I mean I can't.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: I don't remember how competing.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: How do you know this is competing?
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, I mean, we if you're married, we are not competing.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, and it's your win is my win, my win is your win.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: So good.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Your money is your money, and my money is my money.
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: You know, she slid that in here.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: It's the reason you know, we put the the caveat on if I can't celebrate when people win, I won't have compassion when they lose.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Because it's Which I love that quote.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Because it's it's it's so important.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Like that's the like I I I would hope to think, right, that man, if they're losing, I'm I'm gonna be the guy that's there.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: But it's like if I can't celebrate when they win, like I'll never be that guy that shows up because if I can't celebrate, then I'm kind of gloating when they lose.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: So I can't have compassion.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Unless you're all tough.
- 18:13unknown: Stop it.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Soccer's different.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Our Bree Central, cheerleaders.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: All right, all right.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: We love you.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: But I'm saying, like, like from a from a church perspective or another church or another pastor, like, man, we're not competing.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Man, we're on the same team.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like this this should be man.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: If you're building, if people are coming, absolutely there's yeah, if your church is expanding, churches for you.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Every church could be filled, and there's still be people.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: The work is still there.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, we see this in the example.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: Paul's like, hey, we're collecting money every single week and we're gonna be taking it to Jerusalem.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: But do you feel he gives them like a formula for it too, though, right?
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: He said, Don't like because I'm a procrastinator, like to with the fiber of my being.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: So he's like, collect it on the first day of the week.
- 19:00SPEAKER_05: First day.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And so then you have it to give when it the time comes around.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Don't wait 12 weeks from now when I show up and you need 12 weeks of giving.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, come on.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Which so like for people who are procrastinators, like he gives them a formula on how to like whatever your P's are, that's he gives it to you.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: You forgot the formula without the all P's.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: You forgot already.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, totally.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: I love that he says.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: Totally, I forgot.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: I love that he says each.
- 19:24SPEAKER_04: We all have a responsibility, right?
- 19:26SPEAKER_04: And financially, everyone can do something.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: And so it's not just their turn or whatever.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It's probably not, you know, anything out of the ordinary what other people are doing.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: But I found for me years ago is that the first thing that I do when I got a paycheck, first thing that I did was tithe.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Same.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: I do that to this day.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, before anything else, before I even think of anything else, I tithe.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: Because here's I learned the lesson the hard way.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: It was like, oh, I'll do that next week.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: And then next week rolls around and you take the tithe out, but 50% of your checks already gone.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: So now it just seems like oh my gosh, I'm given so much.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: And so I've just disciplined myself through the years that the day I get paid, boom, I when I used to have to like go to the bank and cash the check.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: You know, like when you your boss hand wrote you a check.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: So I would get handwritten check for my job, and I would go to the bank and I had envelopes.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Dave Ramsey would be so proud.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And I would put my tithe in there and like you know, separate it all out.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: It was like that was the first thing I did was put my tithe money in.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And I still do that.
- 20:29SPEAKER_04: Except it's you go to the bank and cash your child.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: So Kelly, you'll love this.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: This is way off the topic.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: So gotta be that pool.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Casey has what we call mom's money.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Oh boy.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: I don't call it that, but it's an envelope that I put money in.
- 20:44unknown: Oh.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Wait, hold on.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: We could be learning something here.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: That she can spend however she wants to spend.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Mike.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: Oh playing.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: That's for you.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: That's for my own.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to mute his mic?
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: Why?
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: Why are you doing that?
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Listen, you guys, this is a husband taking care of his wife.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: So you can learn a lot of lessons right here.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, same.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Ours is just electronically done.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: That's true, yeah.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Just a transfer.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: You can zel, you can Venmo, however you want to do it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Mike.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: So anyway, Mike, we need to stay on topic.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: You know what I think is uh is like no one's gonna talk about this because it's not like but in chat in uh verse 12 where he says, now about our brother Apollos, who we all know they um probably preferred more because he was a a better orator.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Um I urged him to visit you, so I'm telling him, please go visit these people.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: I know they like you better, whatever I'm urging.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: He's not willing to come.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: He will see you later when he has an opportunity.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I think because we don't know a lot about Apollos, and I'm like, that speaks a lot to Apollos' character, probably.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Like, nope, I'm a problem there.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And he could feed his pride or ego, yes.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And go because he knows he's very welcomed.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: All these people like me, but no, nope, I caused a problem there.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna pause.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's actually like sure.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Great thought.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: It's a great thought.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because you could go the opposite, right?
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: You could easily go the opposite and be like, what's his problem?
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Why is he going there?
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Or it's like, no, I mean, it doesn't say the Lord told him not to come, like it doesn't say any of that stuff, but it's like, you know, he could have gone to feed his ego, or he's like, no, I'm gonna stay back because I'm gonna do more harm than good.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: And Paul's really trying to work to like pest or past these people, so I'm gonna stay out of his way.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Which I think is something we can learn.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: So good.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: And because it's a letter, they must be asking when's Apollos coming back, right?
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Like, hey, so when's he coming back?
- 22:40SPEAKER_04: Oh, now now because you're brought let me tell you about this.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: See, when I read that, my read on that was Apollos was on mission.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: And if he was to go there, that means divert him off the mission that he was on.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: So he was, you know, I have to say no to this so I can say yes to this.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: And how many times because how I found more times than any the things that are more distracting are the good things.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: It wasn't a bad thing, right?
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: To get me off mission or off of what God is, you know, having me focus on right now or towards it was typically not bad things.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: It typically is a good thing, but you know, I need to stay focused on this.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: That's very true.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: So why do you think the very next verse is you know a standalone verse that we be on guard?
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong, and do everything with love.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Like is that a first Corinthians 13 reminder?
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Or is is he addressing still the Apollos thing of like you know, is that is that connected?
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, 12 though, when you it's he says um uh you are led away, led astray by worshiping speechless idols, like be on guard.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: Don't worship speechless idols.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Like that, just those three words.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe he's addressing, like, hey, I'm addressing that polis isn't coming.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Many of you are asking, I need you to stay on guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong, and do everything with love.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Like, is he addressing what Pastor Sean just said?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: You know, like they're writing these letters.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Maybe I don't know it's a whole new thought.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you have to remember Paul's responding to their in you know inquiries and requests, right?
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: You know, so apparently in their original, you know, communication with Paul, they were asking if Apollos could come, right?
- 24:39unknown: Right.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Please send him, we like him better.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: You're mean.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: And short, and you do it in the form of a letter, not even to our face.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: We're glad we're we're glad you're writing us.
- 24:51SPEAKER_04: Can you send Apollos?
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: He's so much nicer.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: And he won't need, you know, it's interesting a little bit later on.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: He talks about Paul said, I did write this part with my own hand.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: Because it's written by somebody else.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he is.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: But this portion.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: You're saying this portion.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: The ending portion Paul actually wrote himself.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: But that's interesting.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: I think too, maybe it was a little bit of were they getting upset because Apollos wasn't coming.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Wasn't coming.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: He's don't get ticked at him, you know.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: So I don't know.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Because you go to 1 Corinthians 2 and now they're mad at Paul because he said he was gonna come and he didn't.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: So he writes in the 10th century.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: 2 Corinthians, sorry.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah So which you guys are extending, right?
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: In your small group?
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Uh yes.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: It's not as like deeply like theological, it doesn't seem.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: It's a little emotional, which I'm not good at.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: So it'll be interesting.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: I think it's um a too, and you know, like you said, you hold back dealing with that whole, you know, the whole divisions, I'm of Paul, I'm Apollos, I'm of any.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Remember, Jesus is at the center of this.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: And I like something that that Jamie said is how many things have we thrown into Christianity?
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: This isn't verbatim, but how many things have we thrown into Christianity that's moved Jesus out of the center?
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: I love that statement.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Because we can look today and see there's so many things in the church we're in Christianity that Christ is not the center of.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: It's Right.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: It's like it doesn't even matter.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: It's like either my preferences or you know, or it's all about me, or you know, whatever.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: And I think there's that's he's reminding them of that, you know.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Keep Christ in the center of this.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: It's good.
- 26:47unknown: Good.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: I've loved, I've loved, I mean, I know we've done this for 15 years, and I think we've done Hebrews twice and James twice, and obviously we've we've done a lot Proverbs.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: I think we've done Proverbs twice even.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: But like for me, like Corinthians, I think because it's not something people probably I mean, pre people probably read Proverbs and Psalms, and um, but like I don't know that people's done a lot of research in Corinthians, so I mean kudos to Jesus.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: No, because when you get in Paul's letters, they're kind of confusing and hard, and you gotta like actually break it up.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: But I'm saying what I'm saying is most people have taken uh what we just talked about, like statements from Corinthians, but never really done the research as to who he's writing to.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so even you know uh statements about women, you know, like I mean, you want to know why it's my one of my favorite uh examples from Dr.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Kohick, because he does obviously we've read statements about women and we don't always want to like dig into the context like no, Paul said it, you have to be quiet in church, women can never speak in church, instead of like, oh, he wrote that to a specific people group at a specific time for a specific purpose.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: But you get to the end of 16 and it says, greet each other with a sacred kiss.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: She's like, Why don't we do that?
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Why do we take everything out?
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: It's like this is factual.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna dig into it, we're not gonna try to figure out what he means by that, we're not gonna see what the original words were and how they translate and blah blah blah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: But then we get to, but I mean, no one's gonna really greet each other with a sacred kiss.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: So it's like you can't.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a good thing.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Here's what I'm thinking right now.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Pastor James like, let's try this on Sunday, see what happens.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: I got a couple old ladies that like to greet me with a sacred kiss all the time.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know, they all die.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Maybe they I mean I'm almost like, where is this culturally?
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: We probably can't do that anymore.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Maybe they've I've walked away from several people.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: I'm like, did they just kiss me on the cheek?
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: I would not doubt it.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Do you think anyone's ever even attempted to kiss me on the cheek?
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: I have.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: We can't talk about this.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: This would be a whole rabbit hole of how many.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: But good point.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: I think the point you can do.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: Right, like that's a great point.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Like, we take it so concrete, it's black and white.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: You read it and it is yes.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Why are we taking certain things very black and white and certain things not very black and white?
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: And not like dig into what it means, you know.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Let's dig in.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Uh John MacArthur, what would you say to that?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: When you're so adamant about certain things.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is a whole thing.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Maybe we can do a podcast on that one day.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Church rule.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: Like women in the church's rules, and women in the church is like, are we allowed to use our mouths to speak for the Lord?
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't know how you could come to a negative conclusion on the fact that we can't use our mouths, but well, I think everybody that has a leader.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: You can't uh kiss somebody on the cheek, I guess.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: I think everybody that's that's all we're good for.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I think what I've liked about the questions, like I've gotten emails and and people we've had conversations, but like anybody that's maybe had that line of thought of like I've always heard that.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: They've always prefaced, every single one of them have always said, I know that he says this, and I know he says it in Timothy as well, but that's not the example we see in all the other areas of of the Bible when God is using women.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: So, like that, like again, people are going, it can't be the case, even though I've heard it that way my whole life.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: They can't be the case because I've seen other examples which have caused them to then go, this has to be situational, this has to be a certain group of women.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Well, because Paul also had women that were co-workers.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: So he wouldn't use women as co-workers and then be like, by the way, none of you can ha has there been a have you been somewhere where you've heard some of those people address?
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Like how did you know MacArthur address those kind of things when he was so adamant about it, even calling out some women?
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: And um, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with him as a as a I don't actually know what he says totality of that.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: But like I wonder because he was very, you know, before his passing, he, you know, when he would do conferences, they would do Q ⁇ A's.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: People are asking.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: So I I don't actually know.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Like, has there been that time when someone says, Well, obviously God used other women, how would you address that?
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Address that part.
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: That's a great I don't know.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: I don't know either.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: I've never really been a MacArthur fan.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: And so I've listened a lot more Piper for sure.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: And uh, but I don't know.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't know if I've listened to Piper in regards to this topic, though.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: I guess for me, like it's not that I don't want to learn from those guys in with regards to those topics, but I I know that we have we we see things differently, and so I just, you know, I mean, like it's not that I'm not open to the to listening, but I guess if I'm gonna listen, it's gonna be more so like where I'm trying to you know, you know, where I haven't made up my mind already.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: I would love to like sit in a room, and I just said this on She Wigs too, so sorry if you hear this twice.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: Um where there's like uh two theologians, one on each side of the fence, who have like years of research under there about like and it's not like they're doing it to like spite women, they don't hate women, like we've prayerfully considered all of these things, and here are the reasons why we think women can't we really come down to women can't be in church leadership, I guess, and or preach from a pulpit.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: That's actually probably what it is.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Not then no one would ever say I can't go out and witness to a stranger.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or no one would ever say that.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: That you couldn't work in kids, right?
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, it's I mean what it's a little confusing at which age women can have to stop teaching men, because obviously we can teach our sons still at even 23 and 27 years old.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Um but I would just love to like sit and listen to two brilliant minds debate it.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: You and I just learn from it.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: I think I think yes to that scenario.
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: I think for me would be more intriguing is to sit in a room with several rabbis teaching from this.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Because you know why women sat and learned from rabbis.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Pardon?
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Women got to learn from rabbis.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, absolutely.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: And I think w the challenge we have with our Western-minded theologians is that they they forget that the Eastern culture.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: So much of the Eastern culture that and they read everything through that Western filter.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: And they lose a lot of context, I believe.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: I mean that like you said, like starting this off, that's been one of the cool things with First Corinthians, is that if you it's it's forced us to go to the context.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: It's forced a lot of church people to think backstory in context, which is so important for people from the Bible.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: How smart Paul was.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: He's not like a new convert.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: No.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: He knew Jewish law, yeah.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: And he was raised by one of the greatest.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: So like when it came to wisdom, he's he's not stupid.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: So like I think a lot of times we picture Paul as like, oh, his, you know, he had scales and eyes were all these things.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: It's like, dude, he was pretty high up.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: He wasn't like the rest of the disciples that came from like the D team.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Like he was coming from the A team.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Like, it's a privy, I mean, he's not on the doors.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: He's knocking on the doors to the disciples.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: He's not introducing himself.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: No.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: They know exactly who he is, and they're nervous because who he was, but also they're probably intimidated from a teaching discipleship standpoint, from a you know, a mentor standpoint.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: So no one, no one really addresses that part of like he's not new to the scenes to the church at Corinth, yeah, to Romans, I mean, like to Greek, like I mean, they know who this guy is.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: I'm sure you've had this thought, like as you've taught in Pastor, and you all three, all three of you, I'm sure you've had this thought because I have it all the time.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: Like when I'm studying for a text, like specifically Paul's letters, you know, I'm just like, I'll get all done and I'm practiced.
- 34:46SPEAKER_04: I'm ready to go, I've gone over it Saturday night late, and then I'm like, Paul.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: It'd be just a lot easier if you were here to say these things because this is your letter.
- 34:55unknown: You know what I mean?
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: Like, because like I'm translating.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: Could you imagine like if like I said it this way, like uh, I mean a couple different things, but I could you imagine like if someone gave you a letter and you didn't have any context and you had to translate that letter?
- 35:09SPEAKER_04: Right, like, oh my goodness.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: Like I used this uh illustration one time, someone in regards to when Shilly and I were in St.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: Charles as youth pastors, like we were there for a year, and then our lead pastor had left, and it wasn't anything bad.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: He was just going through some things personally, he had to had to go.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: And so then we brought an interim pastor, then that interim pastor was gone.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: And you know how it works, like sometimes when you so Shilly and I ended up being for a season like the interim senior pastors before we left to be youth pastors in Jerseyville.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: And so the the and it wasn't extremely unhealthy, but like the way they were using the gifts on Sunday morning, uh, according to Paul, you could tell like there were some unorder like things.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: And so I'm just a youth pastor, a year and a half in, very intellectual group, you know, I mean, all these kind of things.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I'm not sure what to do here.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: So I called my leadership, you know, at that at a district level and said, Hey, I don't know what to do.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: What should I do?
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: So I I I I'm gonna just put it in this context.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: I open up an e my email, send an email, hey, these are things that are going on in our services.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: It doesn't seem like it's line up with what Paul is saying in Corinthians.
- 36:12SPEAKER_04: Like, what do you want me to do?
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: Like, I need some instruction from you.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: And so they email me back, which was more of a phone call, but I'm just gonna put it in the letter format.
- 36:20SPEAKER_04: Like, email me back, like, hey, so this is what I would do.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: I would stop all of that from happening gifts-wise for six weeks to eight weeks.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: We're gonna actually help you put together a process that you and Shelley can sit sit and teach for eight weeks.
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: So we literally we created table, stools, everything was calm.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: We stopped for like six weeks, and we the first Sunday I said, so this is what we're gonna do.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: These are the things that we're seeing.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: I love that everybody wants to operate in spiritual gifts.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: It doesn't seem like it's functioning according to what Paul's saying.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: So we're gonna walk through it, and then after we're done walking through it, this is what my leadership has told us to do.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: Then we'll start doing those things.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Well, the good thing was that, like, long story short, those that were kind of like want to do their own thing, they left.
- 37:04SPEAKER_04: Those that want to submit to the Bible stayed, and we started moving in a healthy thing.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: But could I was thinking about this the other day, could you imagine if Pastor Jamie down here in Granite City got word that the district office sent me a letter and he's like, I need that letter, right?
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: And uh, and there were some specific instructions for our church.
- 37:23SPEAKER_04: And then he tried to take that letter and apply it to his church.
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: He's like, We're gonna start doing it this way.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: That's great, but he didn't have context.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: And he's like, he's like, We're gonna do this way.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: Like everybody that has a ponytail, uh, you usually are doing these weird things, you can't do anything anymore.
- 37:36SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: And so now all the churches you plant that have ponytails, you know what I'm saying?
- 37:41SPEAKER_04: Like that's so true.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: And then the church in Michigan goes, guys, anybody with ponytails, you're done.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: You're done.
- 37:46SPEAKER_04: Nobody, you all you can do is take it.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: I read it.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: I read it in Paul's letter.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: Ponytails out.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: And so, like, to me, like this is practically, I feel like this is what's taking place, you know.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: And so, like, we had a specific situation that had to be dealt with at our church.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: So let's deal with it.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: The Corinthians had a specific situation that Paul had to deal with.
- 38:04SPEAKER_04: My thoughts.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: So good.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: It wasn't universal for all time.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: It wasn't for all time.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: But we same with Timothy.
- 38:11SPEAKER_04: But we have yeah, but at the same time, there's things that Paul would say, Hey, Pastor Jamie, like we probably need to handle this situation, like the lady in the back or the guy in the back.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, like how he does talk like the order of the gifts of the spirit makes sense.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: You know, like that makes sense.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: And you can learn from the if you had particular the church in Michigan had a particular scenario.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Similar scenario.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: You'd say, oh, that's that I learned from that.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: That's what how they dealt with it.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: But we could deal with this similarly.
- 38:41SPEAKER_04: Some of the rules would apply to Pastor Jamie's church.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: But it's not all going to apply.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: That's actually really good.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Great analogy.
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: Who wants to pray, Kelly?
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: You always pick me.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: Because I told my story last time about it.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Don't be quiet, girl.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: Don't be quiet.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Listen, if you think you can preach, you can pray.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: So if uh yeah.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: If if you are enjoying the Jamie Kelly combo on the podcast, you could uh send Jesse an email that says, I enjoy Jamie and Kelly Pod uh same combo on the podcast.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: Same money.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Let's see how many people made it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: Hold on, hold on.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: I want to see.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: I was actually thinking that'd be good.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: I'm more interested in how many people stayed this long.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: We're actually in 39 minutes.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: I like long ones.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: They're my favorites, actually.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Even if it takes me two days to get through them.
- 39:34SPEAKER_05: That's true, yeah.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: God, thank you so much for the summer we walked through First Corinthians and everything that we've learned.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: God, you've taught us so much.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: We've learned so much from your word.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: And I pray that we continue on that journey, God, that we dig deep into what the word says.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: God, and we meditate on it and we um spend some time on it, even if it's just one verse or one chapter.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: God, but we really let it um sink into our soul, but not for just that reason, God, but it renews our mind, it renews our vision, it renews our passion for who you are.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: So, God, I pray that you continue to um work through our church as we grow in you more.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: You continue to expand our boundaries and um that we just reach more people for you, God.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: That's the ultimate goal.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: It has nothing to do with how many people come to church at Life Community Church.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: It's that we are reaching the loss for you.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: So, God, we thank you in Jesus' name.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Amen.
