Transcript
- 0:12All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon.
- 0:15On a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network flag shipped out
- 0:19of Des Moines sports station One O 6.3 KX&O.
- 0:23Miller and Condon with you for the next couple of hours.
- 0:25Thank you for starting your afternoon with us.
- 0:28And then AT2O clock, we'll turn things over to off the bench
- 0:31with Sean Roberts and Lucas Strain.
- 0:34They will take you until 5:00. Were you a Doors guy?
- 0:37A couple of their tunes. OK, not not not the on the
- 0:41entire body of work. But some of them, yeah, I, I
- 0:44wonder because here you talk about the Stones all the time.
- 0:46There's a lot of different bands that pop up.
- 0:48And when I play a Door song, which I had middle school, there
- 0:51was a range that the Doors coming on the heels of the movie
- 0:54that came out there in the early 90s, I was definitely into the
- 0:56Doors. I don't see you tapping your toe
- 0:58nearly as much when I play some Doors.
- 0:59Yeah, it's not. It's not a toe tapping.
- 1:01Kind of. Thing Jim Doors a different kind
- 1:03of guy. No, he was.
- 1:04Where did he die? Paris.
- 1:05I think he correct good stuff. Well, we do have a death in the
- 1:09entertainment industry that we'll probably touch on at some
- 1:12point in the opening segment. Is Rob.
- 1:13Well, let's do it now. What the Robert Redford passed
- 1:16away. What a life, what a what a body
- 1:19of work that he left behind. Obviously the natural Roy Hobbs
- 1:23was a terrific sports movie. My my Butch Cassidy, the
- 1:28Sundance Kid for, you know, my demographic was massive,
- 1:32massive. I've one of the worst times of
- 1:34my life. In 1973, taken Cheryl Brusgaard
- 1:37on the bus to the Odeon Theatre to watch the movie with Barbra
- 1:42Streisand was just torture the way we were, the way we.
- 1:45Were. I don't think I got a second
- 1:49date with Cheryl, but anyways. Yeah, but what, what?
- 1:54Those were some of the ones that I remember.
- 1:56All the president's men, Right. Oh, absolutely.
- 1:58Yep. That's a good one.
- 1:59It's the natural for me. Yeah, me too.
- 2:01Yeah. I mean, that's Butch Cassidy.
- 2:02Then the natural is it Paul Newman and and Robert Redford.
- 2:05So good. It was probably the time to.
- 2:08I mean, that movie came out in the mid 80s, so right in my
- 2:11wheelhouse. It was on cable all the time
- 2:13growing up. Oh yeah.
- 2:15See that thing on TNT or something somehow.
- 2:17Sunny afternoon. And All right, we'll watch this
- 2:19and watch him hit the home run and blast the lights out.
- 2:21And but I also remember just how weird it was wrapping my mind
- 2:25around what what is this? What what's going on?
- 2:27Like, you know, this isn't a real team.
- 2:30What what is this movie trans? It was much different than kind
- 2:34of what my mind as a a youngster was able to wrap my mind around
- 2:37and. Mel Allen's not going to be
- 2:38talking about it on This Week in Baseball.
- 2:40Right. And then I also remember still
- 2:42you'd hear in the 80s and the 90s what a handsome man.
- 2:45He wasn't. He's an old guy.
- 2:46How? He looked the same for like his
- 2:48entire life. He just looked like an.
- 2:50Old guy to me though as a young kid and I didn't get it.
- 2:53Well why? Why do you think this old guy is
- 2:55good looking as he he can understand?
- 2:58It yeah, he looked saved his entire life.
- 3:00He really did. But but what a, what a, what a
- 3:02career and obviously some really good pictures that he left
- 3:05behind the way we were not being one of them, which I think won a
- 3:08lot of awards, but. Not in the Miller house.
- 3:11No, no. Anyways, so Monday Night
- 3:15Football is come and gone. Yeah, you got another one?
- 3:18Yeah, how about the four? It was 16 and four between.
- 3:21No, I was three and two. I got beat by the hook in the
- 3:25Ole Miss game, Ole Miss Arkansas.
- 3:27It was 6 and I was laying 6 1/2 but still pretty Dang good.
- 3:31Yeah, that's good. I, I was, I was pretty pumped up
- 3:35that we didn't lose any ground when both of the boys in the
- 3:38afternoon had their good week that we went toe to toe with and
- 3:41well, regardless, good stuff. And look, I think that both
- 3:45winners from last night are major, major contenders in their
- 3:50respective confidence conferences.
- 3:53I, I look when it comes to the NFC to see if you'll follow
- 3:56along or discreet. OK, I think it's the Eagles and
- 3:58the Packers, yes, and a little gap.
- 4:00Tier Tier 1. Tier 1.
- 4:02Tier 2, the Buccaneers are absolutely on it, no doubt.
- 4:05AFCI think it's the Bills and the Ravens.
- 4:08Tier 1. Tier 2, I think the charges are
- 4:11on there. Trenton.
- 4:13So there's things that happened during the suburb and it's
- 4:18normally you betting on the chargers.
- 4:19It happens every. Year and I give you a hard time
- 4:21and we laugh about it and then it gets the end of the season.
- 4:23Here we go again. Yeah, Adams, they're 7:00 and
- 4:259:00. I can't wait for them to post
- 4:26future. So I get better, we get next
- 4:28year. And watching them again last
- 4:31night in a game that was weird, goofy, quirky, just all kinds of
- 4:36weird stuff happening. Those are the kind of games,
- 4:39certainly on Monday night, those prime time affairs where it
- 4:41feels like the home team, they find a way, right?
- 4:44And the Chargers had an answer every single time.
- 4:48I walked away so impressed by that team.
- 4:50I walked away even more impressed by Herbert.
- 4:52He's healthy and I've just seen him a couple of times.
- 4:55Tuck it and get that a. Because he couldn't run before.
- 4:59Absolutely. And it's always been a component
- 5:01of him when healthy. But that caveat you put in there
- 5:04because there hasn't been a ton of help, they have the pieces.
- 5:07I think they do. They absolutely have the pieces
- 5:10and I was concerned, you know, with the offensive line injury
- 5:13and shuffling guys around and you're moving over all right now
- 5:16alts going over to the left side.
- 5:17What's that mean for your right tackle position cuz?
- 5:19Slater's out for the year, right?
- 5:20Right, he's out for the year, yet they've been able to hit it
- 5:23now. What do you replace one of the
- 5:26best left tackles with? One of the best left tackles
- 5:29That that definitely helps too. But you would you would think
- 5:32that that would put a deficiency on the right side of the line.
- 5:35But I think you're absolutely right.
- 5:37And right before the season, those last, you know, 10 days
- 5:39before the NFL season kicked off, I heard a lot of that buzz
- 5:43about the Buccaneers, and I bought it myself.
- 5:46Orps comes back if they can get. Through early When is he coming
- 5:48back? He was.
- 5:50It went up until close to game time yesterday before he was
- 5:52officially announced. So he's got.
- 5:53So maybe this coming weekend. It's gonna be yeah, he he's
- 5:56getting close to returning. You add that to that offensive
- 6:00line, the skill positions, Abuka, that dudes a stud, isn't
- 6:03he is. I mean, we saw at Ohio State.
- 6:05Could he be Rookie of the Year? Oh, I don't think that's that's
- 6:07a stretch by any means. You get The Jets this week,
- 6:09maybe you set him out another week, and then you get ready
- 6:12after that. But still, the Buccaneers team,
- 6:14yeah, they're live. The Chargers team, they are
- 6:17live. I'm right there with you.
- 6:18I walked away so impressed with both of those teams and Baker
- 6:22Mayfield. He's so tough.
- 6:24Gets up. He's so good and hollering.
- 6:27Getting into D BS face you want to fight it was great.
- 6:31I want that guy on my side. No, he's he look at and and Troy
- 6:35pointed out don't not the most athletic quarterback in the
- 6:38league, but he's just tough and he just is a football player.
- 6:41You know, he's just one of those guys that you look at and that
- 6:45is a football player. Lucas Strange just sent the
- 6:48update. Here we are.
- 6:50I know this doesn't affect many of you, but it's bragging rights
- 6:53in the building. We're up a game.
- 6:55We're up a game, that's it. Yeah, Is that right?
- 7:00They got twelve wins, we got 14. We're up to.
- 7:01We're up to. Up two.
- 7:03All right, we'll take it. That's where we were going into
- 7:05it. No, we're up 3 going into it.
- 7:06So anyways, good stuff. They're a little head to head
- 7:11competent because we're certainly talking the talk
- 7:13trend. Oh, absolutely.
- 7:13If they beat us, yeah. I mean, I don't, I am not
- 7:16worried one iota. I'm starting to see it.
- 7:18Are you? Yeah.
- 7:18College has been good the last two weeks.
- 7:20NFL has been pushing money around.
- 7:22We're starting to see it a little bit better.
- 7:23Feeling very good about the college slate.
- 7:25Now, as always, it's about paring down and finding the
- 7:28right games. Yeah, no, it absolutely is.
- 7:30Well, two good Monday night games.
- 7:31Last night I didn't see the end. What time did the what time did
- 7:34the finale and was it after midnight?
- 7:36Just before midnight. It was right in that range,
- 7:38Yeah. I didn't even happen to look at
- 7:39the clock at the time, but it was there.
- 7:41I was hoping for maybe a backdoor cover out of the
- 7:43Raiders, and Gino had other ideas about that.
- 7:46My God. Yeah, I don't know if that's the
- 7:48Chargers defense, who I think are pretty good.
- 7:50We're just. Gino Smith is just.
- 7:53That's what you get out of You don't want Gino throwing it
- 7:55around 43 times. No, I agree with you and 11.
- 7:59Carries for Ashton Gente in a game like that.
- 8:02And especially after his first carry when he just blew that
- 8:04safety up. I mean, he depleted him on his
- 8:07way to a 10 yard gain. I think they gave him 9 1/2
- 8:10regardless. Yeah, we'll see where it goes.
- 8:13Obviously, Mason Crosby is a hell of a player on that Raiders
- 8:16team. You just wonder if he's going to
- 8:17be one of those guys that you know, he's going to spend a lot
- 8:20of his career on a non playoff contender, kind of like what's
- 8:23going on in Cleveland with another pretty good defensive
- 8:26end in in Miles Garrett. We'll see where that goes.
- 8:29So Monday, so Thursday night we get Buffalo hosting is Miami.
- 8:33I think it's Miami. Is and I'm going to guess a
- 8:36whole lot of people will be using that one for surviving.
- 8:38No, I think so too. And I, and I do believe that
- 8:43this is probably there'll be a coaching change at with Miami if
- 8:46it goes bad, you know, with a couple of extra days, right,
- 8:49we'll see where it goes. You get the mini bye week that's
- 8:51kind of sprinkled in there as well if this thing goes
- 8:53horribly. And certainly thinks it would.
- 8:554110 You know something like that then yeah, you RIP the
- 8:59Band-Aid off and you just make that firing right away is.
- 9:01There an O and two team not named the Chiefs because I guess
- 9:04you got to you have to put them in the conversation.
- 9:08Who are the O and two teams right now that I'll just ask you
- 9:11here are the own two teams and I I think, well, this will be very
- 9:14quickly. The first three no Jets,
- 9:16Dolphins, Browns, no OK Titans or Texans.
- 9:21Texans still because of that defense, but that offensive.
- 9:24Line taking a step back or is it the offensive?
- 9:26Line, I think it's the offensive line.
- 9:28He has no time. He has no running game.
- 9:30There is absolutely no ability for anything other than him to
- 9:32sit there in the pocket, get hit and hopefully deliver some
- 9:35passes. I I think that is, but their
- 9:38defense is good. Yep.
- 9:39No, it's really good. And if they could wrap up
- 9:42instead of letting the guy get to the 15 yard line, maybe we'd
- 9:45be having a different conversation and they wouldn't
- 9:46be on that O and two list. Did you think Jalen Knoll was
- 9:49going to house it? I did.
- 9:50I did too. Yeah, I did too.
- 9:52I thought he was gone. All right.
- 9:55I like the Titans team though and they're O and two they
- 9:58haven't covered either week yet. I put them both weeks I.
- 10:01Feel good about them I. They're pointing in the right
- 10:04direction. They're they're trending
- 10:05positive and I think Cam board is just going to continue to.
- 10:07Agree. Yep, I agree.
- 10:09The Chiefs are certainly still in the hunt.
- 10:11The Giants. No, I.
- 10:13Know what you're going to say here, Your bears.
- 10:15Oh God no. The Saints.
- 10:17No, but they're plucky. They are.
- 10:19Yeah, they are. And I think we're going to go
- 10:21against them this week in Survivor.
- 10:24One thing they play Seattle. They play Seattle at Seattle.
- 10:28One thing with the Saints is Spencer Rattler, and again, this
- 10:33is just watching him, seeing him on red zone pop up from time to
- 10:35time. I'm not watching full games or
- 10:37anything like that, but he's out there competing his ass off.
- 10:40Yeah, he's he's in it. I don't know if it's going to
- 10:43turn into he becomes a a perennial starter, but I think
- 10:47he's found a place in this league and coming out there are
- 10:49a lot of people that have questions about, I mean, he was
- 10:51an Uber recruit. He was where?
- 10:53Where did he go in the draft, do you remember?
- 10:55Was he like 1/5? Round sounds familiar.
- 10:57Yeah, something like that. But there were questions about
- 10:59him. And I think at minimum he has
- 11:01found a spot that this is going to be a guy hanging around,
- 11:03probably a backup is next stop after the Saints get their
- 11:06quarterback, whatever that turns out to be.
- 11:08I I like what we've seen out of him, just hanging around making
- 11:13some plays. Yeah, we'll see.
- 11:14I mean, Tyler Shuck is behind him, so there's not a lot there.
- 11:18And they wasted. I I, I think at this point you
- 11:20have to say they wasted. He was a second round pick and
- 11:23he can't beat out Spencer Rattler.
- 11:25So you just wonder how that's going to work out.
- 11:27But the Saints seemingly, I agree with you.
- 11:29He thought it would be kind of a a free square whenever the
- 11:33Saints played, but they've they've been, what did you say,
- 11:36plucky, plucky. They have, they have been
- 11:38played. Carolina was plucky in the
- 11:40fourth quarter. That one about gave me.
- 11:42I didn't. Come.
- 11:42I didn't see the comeback. Was it?
- 11:44Was there a time in that game that you thought, Oh my God, the
- 11:46Cardinals are going to blow this?
- 11:47Yes, there. Really.
- 11:48Was they got a downside kick? You don't get downside kicks to
- 11:52the NFL anymore. They had an onside.
- 11:53Kick and they're down. How many 5?
- 11:55Down 5. I think how much time left?
- 11:57Minute. Why there's time.
- 11:59So was that the late window he was?
- 12:01That must have been on the Denver game.
- 12:02Yep. And they just kept penalty after
- 12:06penalty. And there was against them,
- 12:08yeah, against Arizona, they're just hanging around.
- 12:12They they had them stopped, I think third and 15 now personal
- 12:14foul, roughing the passer and give another one.
- 12:16It just, it felt like I've seen this before in survivor and this
- 12:20is the way that it's going to come to an end.
- 12:22However, Carolina, we know the defense is bad on top of it,
- 12:27both their starting center and right guard.
- 12:29Yeah, on the IR. Boy, yeah.
- 12:32Good luck back there. Yeah, no kidding.
- 12:35Let's get Thunder Joe in here. I want to.
- 12:36I want to talk about. Because that's the only O and
- 12:38Two's. You're right.
- 12:40And and I think we could probably identify three teams.
- 12:42I want to get to Brandon Aubrey in just a second because what a
- 12:45what an incredible weapon. Hello, Thunder Joe, How are you?
- 12:50Hey, pretty good. Yeah.
- 12:51Who knew the Australians? Could kick like that, I guess,
- 12:53Terry. Taylor's Australian.
- 12:55Yeah, man, I got to rib you, brother.
- 12:58What is confused one is it is confused one of the biggest bad.
- 13:02You know what's in the history of the NFL?
- 13:04Who with his wish wish version? Kicker Mason Crosby.
- 13:07I think you mean Max Crosby. Oh God, yes.
- 13:09He said Mason. I did.
- 13:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mason Crosby.
- 13:13Yep. Yeah.
- 13:14I'm like, I'm like, whoa, I don't know what.
- 13:15Yikes. I think, I think, hey, I'm 66
- 13:18years old, Joe, you got to cut these old boys a little slam.
- 13:21No, no, no, no. That was your Broncos goggles.
- 13:23But I know that. Hey, real quick, Rob read for
- 13:27movies yeah. Richard Richard Attenborough
- 13:30assembled The Avengers for A Bridge too far.
- 13:32I don't got time to go through the cast, but look it up on
- 13:34break a bridge too far. I What's it about?
- 13:38The Operation Market Garden, The John Frost Bridge and Arnhem
- 13:42Holland. I think I might have seen it I.
- 13:44Know I haven't seen that. One, I think I have.
- 13:46When did it come out, Joe? I think it was 1979 or 1980, but
- 13:51it had like top period of time, huh?
- 13:54Hopkins, Kane, Hackman, Ryan, Oh my God, Laurence Olivier, Dan
- 13:59Holm, Elliot, Elliot Gould and Robert Redford.
- 14:03Look at look up the cast and they all had major parts.
- 14:05They weren't cameos. 1977 a war film.
- 14:10Graduating in high school. I might.
- 14:12Joe, thanks for the call. Thanks for the correction,
- 14:14brother. You're welcome anytime, you know
- 14:15that. Good to talk Thunder, Joe.
- 14:18Yeah, this this cast a war movie.
- 14:20Yeah, I need to put this one. I.
- 14:22Think I've seen it. Epic War Directed by Richard
- 14:25Attenborough as a Thunder Joe mentioned there.
- 14:28Sean Connery, Michael Caine. Wow.
- 14:31James Caan. Jeez.
- 14:33Elliot Gould, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins.
- 14:36Good God I. Think all these guys are dead?
- 14:37Maybe Anthony Hopkins, the first one still living.
- 14:39Ryan O'Neal There's Robert Redford.
- 14:42Wow, that is a cast. Wow, I'll say.
- 14:45Thank you for that recommendation.
- 14:47I am going. To no, you should and I and I'm
- 14:49going to as well. I I might have seen it, but I.
- 14:51But maybe tonight. No, it's baseball.
- 14:54After baseball gets over, I'm talking about the kids.
- 14:57Your. Twins are hosting the Yankees.
- 14:58Good God, And they won. They.
- 15:00Did they? Did it Helped up my Jay by the
- 15:03way? Thank God I did baseball because
- 15:05I would have taken another free square.
- 15:07Oh yeah, take the free square. That wouldn't have happened.
- 15:09Taken by over 2 Monday Night Football and made it even worse.
- 15:12So I want to talk about Brandon Aubrey.
- 15:13Yes, the kicker for the Cowboys. I think we are.
- 15:17What are you watching late? What are you watching the end of
- 15:19that game? I.
- 15:20Was not I was watching the Broncos.
- 15:21Oh, you. Flipped over it 'cause it was a
- 15:22305 kick. Yeah.
- 15:24OK, you missed out. That was incredibly
- 15:27entertaining. I just kept looking at the box
- 15:29and looking at the score thing and all those Cowboys survivors
- 15:32are dead. Same thing.
- 15:33And then that's why I was even more intrigued, I think, by the
- 15:36game. So.
- 15:37The Cowboys scored to take the lead inside the final minute.
- 15:41Yes, and then somehow Russell Wilson drank from the fountain
- 15:46of youth at one point and found neighbors by himself in the end
- 15:49zone, leaving what, like 30 seconds or something?
- 15:54I think it was 38 when I saw it on the on the, on the crawl, not
- 15:58the crawl. It's up in the left corner now.
- 15:59Whatever you call it, the this, what it's coming kind of box,
- 16:02the box, whatever. They scored 33 seconds extra
- 16:09points, good 25 seconds left the thing and they were mentioned on
- 16:12the broadcast. Is our plane so soft?
- 16:14The Giants defense there, knowing that they have Aubrey,
- 16:18they get to midfield. He's going to kick.
- 16:20He's going to kick. Trent, he's going to kick a 70
- 16:23year old field goal this. Year no doubt he is on top of
- 16:26the new football rules back like it used to be where the the the
- 16:30kickers can doctor the ball and make it a little bit more like a
- 16:33basketball as opposed to a football and not even scuff it
- 16:36up and do all those things. You're absolutely right.
- 16:38The weapon that he is, what does he get paid?
- 16:41The open market. Oh my God, I have.
- 16:44What's he worth in trade? I have.
- 16:46Absolutely no clue what the top kicker makes. 5 million.
- 16:51Who is the top kicker? Right?
- 16:53Highest it had to have been. At some point, Justin Turner, I
- 16:56would think, right? Kicker contract Harrison Bucker
- 17:00Average annual salary of 6.4. That's more than I would have
- 17:04thought, Aubrey. 10. Should be if it's not right?
- 17:09Harrison Bucker, COO, Elliott Dicker, some of the guys that
- 17:14are on that list right now, 6,000,000 for Elliott, just for
- 17:17a reference point there with Bucker leading the way.
- 17:20And then you you go through and you look towards the bottom and,
- 17:23and that's where you get into the Eddie Pineros of the world,
- 17:26still making over $1,000,000. So I Chris Chris Andrews, our
- 17:30friend from the South Point, he tweeted this out in in August
- 17:34and I meant to bring it up at some point back then and I had
- 17:37to go into my bookmarks to find it and I scrolled way down and I
- 17:40found it. Do you remember John Jon
- 17:43Stenrude, absolutely the kicker for the Chiefs, who was so good
- 17:47and he was the first ever kicker to be gain acceptance into Pro
- 17:52Football Hall of Fame. Let me run these numbers by you.
- 17:55This was what it took to be an an Hall of Fame kicker back in
- 17:59the day. Keeping in mind that Brandon
- 18:00Aubrey is going to kick a 70 yarder Jon Stenrude, Hall of
- 18:04Famer lifetime from 40 to 49 yards a chip shot.
- 18:10A chip shot 150 of those kicks in his career.
- 18:13How many he have to make to be considered a Hall of Fame kicker
- 18:18back in the day? Well, it back in the day, over
- 18:21half I would say. He made 77.
- 18:23He just just just snuck by. But from 50 and beyond, he hits.
- 18:28He kicked 64, made 64 of those attempts, made 17 of them.
- 18:34How things have changed in the kicking department and how we
- 18:37view kickers within the last, I don't know, 30 years or
- 18:41whatever. How long has he been gone?
- 18:42Probably 40, probably a little bit longer.
- 18:44But this Aubrey is unbelievable. So he kicked a 64 yarder that
- 18:47was probably good from about 70 with time expired, they go to
- 18:51overtime. I'm watching them.
- 18:53I'm watching the the score bug. That's what it's called,
- 18:56watching the score bug as I'm watching my Broncos go down in
- 18:59flames and I'm like tick, tick, tick.
- 19:01I'm thinking even if it's a tie there was over 3000 like 3500
- 19:07people took Cowboys in Survivor. I have a little something for
- 19:10you. I was hoping it ended in a tie.
- 19:11Because everybody loses. Everybody loses the new rule
- 19:15where both teams have to possess the football.
- 19:18Let's say you get the football 10 minutes on the clock.
- 19:20That's what they put on for overtime, which I don't get.
- 19:22But that aside, 10 minutes on the clock, marching down the
- 19:26field, long sustained Dr. You kick a field goal as time
- 19:31expires. Yeah, exhaust the whole 10
- 19:33minutes final. It's a tie game.
- 19:36Because the other team didn't. Get because the other team did
- 19:39not get the opportunity to possess be damned.
- 19:43I heard that from Gil Alexander with Visen yesterday.
- 19:46Which is? Does every coach know this?
- 19:49No. I, I want it, I want to see this
- 19:53now come to fruition and see if a coach knows instead of waiting
- 19:57till the clock gets down to 2 and call that time out, call
- 20:00that time out with eight. Now, does that also mean that
- 20:02the kicking or receiving team has to have actual possession of
- 20:05the ball? Do you Kick It Out of bounds?
- 20:07Do you Kick It Out of the back of the end?
- 20:08So as long as they have 1 snap, you're thinking well.
- 20:10Does it have to be a snap? I don't know that part.
- 20:13And Gil said he wasn't sure on that part of the rule either.
- 20:16But if you kick a walk off as time expires, that tie game to
- 20:21see it happen. Oh, my God, I had no idea.
- 20:24All right, we'll take a time out.
- 20:25We'll come back. What?
- 20:26What do we got coming up on Vinny Iyer?
- 20:28Vinny Iyer speaking in the NFL from The Sporting News.
- 20:30Elliot Kleff will join us. Matt Snyder, Trent and I will
- 20:33talk baseball. And you're going to have to bear
- 20:35with me because I got to get Treya Savage into that
- 20:38conversation. Oh, baby.
- 20:40It looks like the Jays have one Miller and Condon underway on a
- 20:43Tuesday. Thanks for being with us.
- 20:45It's Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXO in the Iowa Sports
- 20:49Radio Network coming up on 1230 Miller in Condon.
- 20:53Welcome back Iowa sports radio network.
- 20:56Des Moines sports station 106.3 kicks and no Vinny Iyer covers
- 21:00the NFL for the Sporting News also hosts the locked on fantasy
- 21:04podcast part of the lockdown network and Vinny is with his
- 21:07Vinny Trenton can two weeks into the season.
- 21:10Vinny what do you know two weeks in that maybe you weren't sure
- 21:14of going into the season. Is there a team that that you're
- 21:17kind of on the fence about that you either in a positive or
- 21:20negative way that you've turned either for or?
- 21:22Against, yeah, I didn't know what we're going to get from the
- 21:26Colts and the Colts have obviously played pretty well and
- 21:29the first game, look, they're playing Dolphins.
- 21:31I don't expect much from the Dolphins.
- 21:32Sucked me in. They showed me something against
- 21:34Denver, a playoff team, the fight all the way.
- 21:37Their offense also looks spectacular right now with
- 21:40Daniel Jones. Shawn Taylor is back leading the
- 21:43NFL and rushing after two games. So they're looking really
- 21:47competitive and this AFC S is very wide open.
- 21:52This year. The Texans have fallen to O and
- 21:54two. It could get worse actually this
- 21:56week because they're playing the Jaguars and the Jaguars could be
- 21:58two and one and the Colts could keep rolling against the Titans.
- 22:02So the hole could be getting bigger and bigger from the
- 22:05Texans. And the Colts are one of those
- 22:08teams we're going to watch. And The funny thing is the
- 22:10Bengals and 49ers, like I've never seen, I guess 22, no teams
- 22:15that are playing well as a complete team, like have so much
- 22:20pessimism, but they're both in good position to keep afloat
- 22:24here. I mean, there's just not a lot
- 22:25of teams that are going to compete for some of these key
- 22:28playoff spots and and look, immediately there's a break for
- 22:33the Bengals. I mean they go into Minnesota
- 22:35like the Vikings are not playing well.
- 22:37Carson Wentz to make his start first start there.
- 22:39Jake Browning has quite a bit of experience coming in and he was
- 22:43a former Viking. Everyone knows that that he was
- 22:46cut there pretty late. And so I think he's going to
- 22:49come in and play well. So that's a break for them.
- 22:50The 49ers, look, the Cardinals are also off to a hot start, but
- 22:54I won't think anyone's going to weigh them too much based on the
- 22:58playing the Panthers and Saints their first two games.
- 23:01So there's that. But the 49ers, again, that's a
- 23:04tough match up there for the Cardinals.
- 23:07So again, these teams can win with systems and things, and
- 23:10sometimes the schedule works your favor.
- 23:13Well, the quarterback carousel continues, 5 starting
- 23:17quarterbacks out already this year.
- 23:20Anything that you can see, Vinny, any reasonings behind it
- 23:22or just, you know, kind of injury luck going against
- 23:25quarterbacks at this point in time?
- 23:27And for all those teams, certainly very impactful.
- 23:29What is the most impactful when we look at these teams and maybe
- 23:32what they're going to be this season out of the five QBs out
- 23:35this week? Yeah, I mean, now it's like more
- 23:39than ever that you want to have a backup quarterback that's
- 23:42capable and in your system. And I think Jones and Browning
- 23:45are two cases in point there. And I was the I Wentz does he
- 23:48was a very late addition we know to Minnesota.
- 23:50But the system again, these systems, whatever the Rams,
- 23:55Vikings, Falcons, Bengal system is, is pretty good for
- 23:59quarterbacks. They're going to help you
- 24:01because it's all Pat to Sean Mcdade, right.
- 24:02So that's going to help once for sure.
- 24:04But again, I think just the nature of this game is what's
- 24:10happening. A lot of pass attempts, right?
- 24:12People dropping back and passing a lot more teams than 60% of the
- 24:16time, right? If you're handing the ball off,
- 24:18the quarterback is out of harm's way.
- 24:19That's it. And then like a lot of
- 24:22quarterbacks also running quite a bit.
- 24:24I mean, Patrick Mahomes, the 16th leading rusher in the NFL,
- 24:27I'm sure Chiefs fans wish they were two and O.
- 24:29And he had 0 rush yards and he was not hurt.
- 24:32But when you look at it, I mean, they're having to take their
- 24:36games with their own hands. So I think some things are
- 24:39fluky. I think Joe Burrow, a lot of
- 24:40things are fluky with him, but a lot of it is tied to the
- 24:43offensive line always having some issue in Cincinnati.
- 24:47But these things can happen all the time.
- 24:48Last one is kind of didn't step in the right spot and that that
- 24:52happened there with him. So again, sometimes there's no
- 24:56rhyme or reason to these quarterback injuries and then
- 24:59they just add up. But the question is, how well
- 25:02are you positioned as a complete team with a system that's going
- 25:05to support that quarterback to try to bridge it for a few
- 25:07games? Now you play guy like Jones or
- 25:10Browning for 10 games, they're going to get exposed.
- 25:13But if you play them for three to four, four or five games, I
- 25:16think you'll see. I mean, now Browning's got to
- 25:18play the longer stretch, but we've also seen him win, be on
- 25:22the winning side when he's had to start seven games before.
- 25:25I want to go back to the the Vikings get your take on JJ
- 25:28McCarthy. He's played eight quarters,
- 25:29seven of them been mediocre and being kind.
- 25:32I had one really good quarter against a, you know, a Bears
- 25:35team that was without without some guys.
- 25:37If Wentz plays well and and look, KOC was able to turn
- 25:44Joshua Dobbs into an adequate quarterback.
- 25:46I mean, he's got a long list, right, of guys that he's been
- 25:49able to elevate. McCarthy notwithstanding.
- 25:52What's a what, what are the Vikings?
- 25:53Will they have a difficult decision when it comes to their
- 25:56QB? If Wentz plays well and
- 25:57McCarthy's been, you know, mediocre, what will they do,
- 26:00Vinny? Yeah, it's something they have
- 26:03to evaluate. And it's unfortunate because the
- 26:05break says, look, they didn't expect maybe Sam Darnold has
- 26:10started all last year, but they needed him early and then turned
- 26:12out to be the thing where he needed the whole way.
- 26:14And then maybe then have that high of expectations for him to
- 26:18play that well. But then that put him by and
- 26:20everyone's comparing McCarthy, what their cousins and Sam
- 26:24Darnold are doing all the time. And it's like, maybe not fair,
- 26:27right? If they just came in with the
- 26:29rookie, he had the red shirt year, he was healthy enough to
- 26:31at least take reps, you know, then you'd have a different
- 26:34story. But basically you're starting
- 26:36from scratch and going back and it just has to be patient.
- 26:38I mean, you only had two starts so far and he's one and one and
- 26:41he had a big comeback in the first game.
- 26:44So let's be patient on this. I think there's some kinks
- 26:47they're going to have to work out.
- 26:49And look, maybe Jordan Addison is bigger part of this offense
- 26:53than people would realize about that.
- 26:56And the fast protection has been as I think the offensive line is
- 26:59not played as well as it can. And Minnesota, you're not
- 27:03getting much of running game right now.
- 27:04So you got to support your gun quarterback a lot better than
- 27:07they are. Get Kelly and Darasaw back and
- 27:10that certainly would change, you'd think, of that Vikings
- 27:12offensive line. So last night, Tom Brady's up in
- 27:14the booth with a headset on. To some people, that rankled
- 27:17people. My first thought was this Vinny,
- 27:20oh boy, if Jerry Jones sees this, great, he's going to be in
- 27:22a coach's booth next with a headset on.
- 27:24Jerry's going to be calling place for the Cowboys here
- 27:26pretty quick. Well, this is a conspiracy
- 27:30theory. You can start.
- 27:32He's no stranger to conspiracy theory.
- 27:34Yes, think about that. So he's he's up in the booth for
- 27:38the Raiders. They're playing the Commanders
- 27:41this week. He was doing the booth for the
- 27:43game for the Commanders the week before, and this week he's going
- 27:48to be doing the Cowboys, Bears, and the Raiders are playing the
- 27:51Bears after he's going to look at the Bears.
- 27:53So you want to start some conspiracy theories?
- 27:56He's scouting. I don't know if he scouted well
- 27:58enough because Raiders did not look good at all against the
- 28:01Chargers, which I wonder if he gave them secret Intel on the
- 28:04Patriots in Week 1, what he knew with Mike Grable.
- 28:07Who knows, right? But when I look at this, I just
- 28:11think it's a bad look. Just separate yourself from one
- 28:13of these teams. It's fortunate that the Raiders
- 28:15are not really a Fox team all that much or so that helps.
- 28:20But doing this on your off time seems a little suspicious.
- 28:24Maybe do all that stuff, maybe behind the scenes or don't do it
- 28:28so outwardly. But it seems like if you he
- 28:31wanted to hide it, he would have.
- 28:33I think there's a reason we did that.
- 28:35Is this the year that the Chargers maybe play up to some
- 28:38of the expectations they've had over the last few years?
- 28:41Herbert is healthy for now. Looks like a different player.
- 28:44He looks like an MVP candidate through two weeks.
- 28:47Chargers appear at this point to maybe have an edge in the AFC
- 28:51West. We're two weeks into it.
- 28:53I know we're overreacting, but your thoughts on what you've
- 28:55seen from the Chargers? Yeah, I mean, the Chargers we
- 28:58knew were going to be put together.
- 28:59I mean, what does Jim Harbaugh do everywhere he goes going back
- 29:02to University of San Diego, Stanford, It doesn't matter
- 29:06where this guy is at, right? He's going to win and he's going
- 29:09to win quickly, like turn around the team very quickly.
- 29:12He saw out of San Francisco, we saw it with Michigan, and he's
- 29:16going to make them championship caliber in a hurry.
- 29:18And he just needed one year to sort things out.
- 29:21Hey, what were we missing? We need to get a little bit
- 29:23better run game. We need to get an extra weapon
- 29:26here or two. We're Justin Herbert.
- 29:28We need to learn, be more aggressive and play
- 29:31complimentary football, protective and close out games,
- 29:34right? It's something that a lot of
- 29:36trouble with with the chargering kind of aspect.
- 29:39Well, Jim Herba's flipping that narrative just totally on its
- 29:42side here. But they're not going to do
- 29:45that. They're going to be hard nosed.
- 29:46They're going to be mentally tough, physically tough.
- 29:48They're going to put away teams. And I think Justin Herbert is
- 29:51the ideal quarterback for that. He's a big dude, hard to bring
- 29:54down. He's got good mental makeup
- 29:56where he doesn't get too high or too low.
- 29:58So I think everything is going really well for the Chargers.
- 30:01Now. If you win this week, Denver at
- 30:04home, that's three divinion wins to start the year.
- 30:07I mean, then you're on a roll here.
- 30:08So, so the Chargers look right now might be the AFC West
- 30:13favorite until the Chiefs get back together.
- 30:15So, I mean, this is maybe the nightmare that Andy Reid didn't
- 30:19want necessarily correct with all these caliber of coaches
- 30:22wanting to come to the division. But again, Harbaugh seems up to
- 30:25the task. Childhood this year.
- 30:27Vinny, it's September 16th and I've already thrown dirt on my
- 30:30Chicago Bears, where you called home for four years during
- 30:33college. At Northwestern.
- 30:35The Bears look like the same Bears.
- 30:38Unorganized. Undisciplined.
- 30:40The new coach doesn't matter. The same old Bears Any hope at
- 30:43all for Chicago? Well, I think the problem is
- 30:46that maybe we didn't look at this exact look, I don't think
- 30:49there's anything wrong with Ben Johnson as a coach, but I think
- 30:52there is a lot of things that are lingering from that Uber
- 30:56Fusara and guys that don't totally buy into what's going on
- 31:00here in Chicago. You know, like DJ Moore and
- 31:02these type of players that they spend good money on, like
- 31:05veterans, they're not coming through or buying into what they
- 31:08want. Then there's a lot of the blame
- 31:10on Ryan Poles that he has not built like a good roster in
- 31:14terms of the chemistry, right? Bring you all together.
- 31:16I mean, there's some talent, but there's not talent that's risen
- 31:19yet. So I think Ben Johnson is trying
- 31:22to bring that all together. And look, his job is to come in.
- 31:24He's an offense guy, get the offense going.
- 31:27And that has been flashing, right.
- 31:29But would you give a 50 points give of all those points in the
- 31:32fourth quarter? That's a defensive problem.
- 31:35Look, I don't know how they can quick fix this, but they
- 31:39definitely have have a lot of underachieving guys.
- 31:42And look, I think the first thing that's going to go, I
- 31:44think Ben Johnson at least is going to get a couple years see
- 31:47what happens with Kale Williams. But this could be the end for
- 31:49Ryan polls if you don't see any significant kind of improvement
- 31:54based on the personnel they have.
- 31:55Vinny Iyer from The Sporting News locked on fantasy network
- 31:58are locked on network fantasy football every single day.
- 32:01And of course, Vinny, A Northwestern grad, is a three
- 32:04time Jeopardy champion. Vinny, thanks for doing this as
- 32:07always. We will reach out in a few
- 32:08weeks. Thank you, Vinny.
- 32:09Appreciate it. Yep.
- 32:11Thanks guys. Yep, good to talk to you, Vinny
- 32:12Ayer, as we catch up on the NFL with Vinny.
- 32:15All right, Elliot Cleff, he's listening to some of the Hawkeye
- 32:17players. Kirk Ference is coming up in
- 32:19about an hour or so. We'll catch Elliot.
- 32:22Between that, he'll join Trent and I on the other side.
- 32:25Miller and Condon talking sports on the eye with Sports Radio
- 32:27Network. I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back
- 32:35Trent and I are with you until 2:00 in our number 2, Matt
- 32:39Snyder from CBSSports.com. Well, they're one of their
- 32:43baseball columnist will join us to kick off the hour.
- 32:47Elliott Clough's been had a busy morning.
- 32:49He's been at the the Hawkeye complex.
- 32:52They've got to had players earlier.
- 32:54They have Kirk Ference coming up here in about an hour from right
- 32:57now. Friday night, Rutgers hosts Iowa
- 33:00numbers what trends about 1 1/2. Still somewhere around there
- 33:02Hawks a slight favorite. Elliot to Hawkeye insider 24/7
- 33:06sports. Hello Sir, how are you?
- 33:09I'm good. How are you guys doing?
- 33:10Doing well. So I know Granowski was part of
- 33:12the availability today. I guess we'll start there with
- 33:16the quarterback who had to be happier with his performance
- 33:20against UMass. Obviously, the waters about to
- 33:22get deeper here in the weeks ahead, but nonetheless, a pretty
- 33:26good maybe a confidence builder not only for him but for the
- 33:29offense in general going into this Friday, Elliot.
- 33:33Yeah. You know, that's that's kind of
- 33:35the way that the the offense and that mark has been approaching
- 33:38it. Of course there are.
- 33:40There's still places to improve. Really got to address those
- 33:43drops, in my opinion, from the receivers.
- 33:45But you know, Mark can only do so much from that.
- 33:47But yeah, I mean, I, I really think we got our first look at
- 33:50at what South Dakota State Mark was, was able to do there in, in
- 33:54Brookings. You know, that 13 yard run where
- 33:57he got to break 3 or 4 tackles and and hype up the crowd.
- 34:01To me, that's, that's what you were looking for when when you
- 34:03brought in a guy like that. Now, now we've got to do it
- 34:06again. You know, a team that isn't
- 34:08that, that is a Big 10 team, 1 and 2 has had a winning record
- 34:13more recently than 2010 against FDS opponents.
- 34:16So this will be an indication as to what Mark is, what he can
- 34:21continue to improve on and if he can, he can take that momentum
- 34:24into into the Big 10 season. Second play from the in the game
- 34:28they take a shot down the field. Had a couple of deeper outs on
- 34:30that one. Found Sam Phillips in a play
- 34:32later. Anderson into the end zone for
- 34:34the touchdown on the RPO. Sign of things to come or it's
- 34:39UMass. I mean, both of them, I'm sure
- 34:41are a part of the truth. What's close to the truth?
- 34:44It was a terrible opponent or yes, we are seeing this passing
- 34:47game. The evolution is happening.
- 34:51You put me in a tough spot and nobody's going to like this
- 34:54answer. UMass is awful.
- 34:59You just got to be honest when when when addressing, you know,
- 35:02the stuff that happened last week in the opponent.
- 35:05I thought Mark was a little bit late on on both of those throws,
- 35:08you know, and I might be nitpicking considering, you
- 35:11know, I was had their their history of of difficulty on
- 35:14offense, but the place did happen.
- 35:16I you know, I, I think it's I think it's a cautious optimism
- 35:19that you have to approach going forward.
- 35:21You can say that that things are moving in the right direction,
- 35:23but I mean, like context matters, right?
- 35:25I mean, and, and and you might mass is really bad.
- 35:28They're in a first year transition with a bunch of
- 35:30injuries on their team. Like I said, they haven't had a
- 35:33winning record in 2010 and they went six and five in that
- 35:36season, made the transition to FBS and they've been awful.
- 35:39So I mean, you just have to take that into consideration.
- 35:43It can be a confidence builder, though.
- 35:44I mean, like you, like you said, like that you have to take the
- 35:49optimism when you can get it when it comes to this Iowa
- 35:51offense, especially over the last half decade.
- 35:53But yeah, I mean, if I have to choose between the two, I have
- 35:57to say that you Matt Bad. But, you know, I don't discount
- 36:00the fact that they might have some momentum going into the Big
- 36:0310 in conference play. I was, I was under the
- 36:06impression, obviously wrongly, that Moulton would be back maybe
- 36:10sooner rather than later. And I would have thought he
- 36:12would have been back for now. So he's not going to play on
- 36:15Friday. And what what's kind of what are
- 36:18you hearing along those lines? And then how do you think that
- 36:20the carries will break down? Is it is it Patterson going to
- 36:24get significantly more playing time, more carries than Xavier
- 36:28Williams? I think it's a little dinged up
- 36:29in his own right. But what about Moulton?
- 36:31And then who will be The Who will lead the Hawks as far as
- 36:35carries this coming Friday? Yeah, You know, Kirk will
- 36:40continually emphasize until the day he's done coaching that the
- 36:44that the depth chart doesn't matter.
- 36:46So we'll we'll probably learn a little bit more as as we get
- 36:49closer to Friday and inevitably somebody's going to ask about
- 36:52Kumari and still have a chance to play on Friday.
- 36:55It would not surprise me if if they, you know, keep him
- 36:58sidelined until Indiana, but it's just been a week to week
- 37:01thing. Apparently he's been progressing
- 37:03well and and you know, they they hope to get him out there sooner
- 37:06rather than later. So if anything, I think he'll be
- 37:09on the depth chart for for next week.
- 37:10I guess Indiana, but with with Xavier Williams a little banged
- 37:13up. I mean, I think one thing that
- 37:16I've been saying, especially following this weekend was last
- 37:20weekend was that Jazz Patterson has been doing really well in
- 37:23his specific role. And I think he should stay in
- 37:26that specific role where he's kind of the secondary, maybe
- 37:29tertiary back and comp can compliment with the other bags
- 37:32to do. But I mean, at the same time, I
- 37:35think he's been playing better than TJ Washington.
- 37:37So in my opinion, if Xavier Williams doesn't go or if he's
- 37:40limited, Jazz Patterson should start.
- 37:42Will that happen? That's that's the question.
- 37:44If I had to get just based on what we know about Iowa, TJ
- 37:47Washington got to start because he's had more experience getting
- 37:51the start, but we'll see. And then additionally meant
- 37:55like, I love what we saw from Nathan McNeil.
- 37:58I love what we've seen from Nathan McNeil.
- 38:00I I love what I've heard from behind the scenes.
- 38:03Like he's, he plays way he plays like he's, he's been in college
- 38:08football for a few years. He's savvy, got IQ.
- 38:11He sees his vision is really good.
- 38:13He's really quick, made some plays despite the the younger
- 38:18offensive line missing some blocks this last week.
- 38:21I would love to see more of him. Will we?
- 38:23Again, that's a question mark that we won't find out until
- 38:25Friday. But in my opinion, Jazz
- 38:27Patterson should get the bulk of the refs, especially if Xavier
- 38:31and and Kamari don't go on Friday.
- 38:33So it's a short week. And even last year, though they
- 38:37lost to UCLA, they jumped out to a 10, nothing lead.
- 38:39They've been so good on Black Friday against Nebraska.
- 38:42What is it about this program, about Kirk, that they've been
- 38:45good in these spots? So he, Spencer Peters probably
- 38:47had his best game against Maryland on a short week on a
- 38:49Friday night. What is it about the program
- 38:51that it seems like they're so good in these in these tight
- 38:54spots? Yeah, you know, and.
- 38:58That, that's a good question. I, I think, you know, I'll steal
- 39:01a, a quote from Stan Van Gundy and I'm not going to get it
- 39:05exactly right, but I'm going to steal this from when I was
- 39:07covering the Pelicans in 2020. So real throwback right here is
- 39:12he emphasized being able to win or, or play well at any time and
- 39:18any space anywhere. And I think that, you know,
- 39:22maybe without saying as much, that is an emphasis with, with
- 39:25Kurt Ferris and the staff and the team that he has one.
- 39:30And two, you know, one thing that the guys talked about this
- 39:33week is, is getting into things a little bit early, making sure
- 39:35you're drinking as much water as possible, eating as much as
- 39:38possible to recover better. You know, I'm not saying that
- 39:41that other programs aren't doing that, but there, there might be
- 39:44an added edge there from, from behind the scenes.
- 39:47And, you know, I, I do think philosophically those things
- 39:50matter, like the, the messages that these guys that this staff
- 39:54pushes or presses on on players matters like anytime, anywhere,
- 39:58any opponent. And, and I think, I think, yeah,
- 40:02I, I think that the games like this is where you start to see
- 40:05that messaging start to come through where, where they win
- 40:08these games on, on Friday nights even.
- 40:10Though they're not used to playing on Friday nights and and
- 40:12they haven't probably haven't done it since high school for a
- 40:15lot of them. Out of time Elliot want to ask
