Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. And if you're watching the video
- 0:18podcast, you might say, Brian, you're back in your office.
- 0:21You're no longer in your own room at home where it's super
- 0:24dark. You are correct.
- 0:26I am back in my office for the very last episode in Psalm 119
- 0:33and we are looking at the 22nd Hebrew letter and it is the
- 0:38Hebrew letter TA TA. And I am excited to go through
- 0:43verses 169 to 176 today. And then after today, we are
- 0:48going to hit Psalm 120 all the way to the end.
- 0:51And then I know a couple of the episodes that we'll be doing
- 0:54even right after that. Let's read through and see what
- 0:58God has for us today. As a reminder, Psalm 119, it's
- 1:00all about the Word of God, if you will, from A-Z.
- 1:04And the Word of God is not just God.
- 1:06I love reading through my Bible in a year.
- 1:09Now I say that right now I actually am reading through my
- 1:13Bible in a year. And so I, I not disparaging that
- 1:18at all. I'm actually super excited about
- 1:21that reading through something with my wife this year and so
- 1:24looking forward to doing that. The word of God is the commands,
- 1:29nature, character and history of God and what he has done.
- 1:32It is learning about the Lord. That's the reason why we read
- 1:37the word of God. It's the reason why I've devoted
- 1:40my entire existence to this is because God's Word, the Bible,
- 1:45scripture tells me about my God. And so it is a worthwhile thing
- 1:51to dive into. Let's read through the verses
- 1:54and then we'll see what we got going.
- 1:57Let my cry reach You, Yahweh. Give me understanding according
- 2:02to Your Word. Let my plea reach you.
- 2:05Rescue me according to Your promise.
- 2:08My lips pour out praise for You. Teach me Your statutes.
- 2:14My tongue sings about Your promise, for all Your commands
- 2:18are righteous. May Your hand be ready to help
- 2:21me, for I have chosen Your precepts.
- 2:25I long for Your salvation, Yahweh, and Your instruction is
- 2:28my delight. Let me live and I will praise
- 2:32you. May Your judgments help me.
- 2:35I wander like a lost sheep. Seek Your servant, for I do not
- 2:40forget Your commands here. I love that there is just such a
- 2:46responsive flow that you have here in these verses.
- 2:53He says things like, I think this is probably David, at least
- 2:57that is writing many of these particular Psalms, the mini
- 3:03psalms, if you will, in Psalm 119, verse 176.
- 3:07You might have heard me laugh. And it was literally because I
- 3:10can imagine David the shepherd remembering stupid sheep that
- 3:17would wander away that would do dumb things that would not
- 3:19follow the shepherd. They wouldn't go along with the
- 3:22rest of the herd that we're all following the shepherd.
- 3:24They went their own way. And then David would have to go
- 3:28and rescue them and bring them back so that they wouldn't get
- 3:31eaten by a lion or wouldn't get eaten by a bear, that they
- 3:35wouldn't be, you know, killed by a wolf or something like that.
- 3:38And so it, it just cracked me up as I was thinking, man, David,
- 3:42what must it have been like as you think about your
- 3:46relationship with God, like that of a shepherd and a sheep,
- 3:52That's something that we should always be thinking through.
- 3:54Psalm 23, obviously written by David, helps us out a lot in
- 3:59that way. But I think even for myself, as
- 4:01I am a pastor, it's a word that means shepherd as I am a
- 4:06shepherd. And I've got, if you will, my,
- 4:09my sheep quote, UN quote here at Tabernacle, my people that that
- 4:13I love and that I care for and that I'm going to give an
- 4:16account for. I have to always go, OK, God, am
- 4:20I being the sheep towards you that I wish that I had for me,
- 4:27like if everyone followed me at Tabernacle, like I follow God?
- 4:32Well, what kind of church would I have?
- 4:35And you, frankly, I think for a lot of pastors, for a lot of
- 4:39leaders, that needs to be the primary focus that we have is
- 4:45not just am I leading other people, it's how am I following
- 4:50God's leadership for me? And that works.
- 4:52If you're a parent like you wish that your child would obey you,
- 4:56Are you obeying your heavenly Father, You wish that your
- 5:02spouse would love you and and care for you in the way that you
- 5:06would like? Well, you are the bride of
- 5:08Christ and are you caring for and loving and supporting and
- 5:13accomplishing His mission like you wish that your spouse would
- 5:17do for you. God is our example in every way
- 5:21of what it looks like to live life in the way that we should.
- 5:25And so I I just love that all of that sorry, spurred off from
- 5:30verse 176. I was saying there's such a
- 5:33flow. It's an A repeat.
- 5:36It's I do this because you do this and I love this or I praise
- 5:40this because you do this. So that's verse 169.
- 5:43Give me understanding according to your word.
- 5:46He says, God, I, I need to know what I'm supposed to be doing,
- 5:49but I don't want that just from the local Philistines.
- 5:53I don't want it just from people's best guesses and
- 5:57estimations. Says I want to know what to do
- 6:00because of what your word says. So God, give me understanding
- 6:04according to your Word. Then when he says let my plea
- 6:06reach you, he says rescue me according to your promise.
- 6:09God, you have said things and I'm going to hold you to your
- 6:13word. God is always faithful to His
- 6:16word, and so you can call on him over and over again and you can
- 6:20say, God, you promised that if I confess my sin, you are faithful
- 6:25and just to forgive me of my sin and to cleanse me from all
- 6:29unrighteousness. God, I have been struggling
- 6:32with, you know, cursing a lot. And so God, I'm coming to you.
- 6:38I recognize that this is not what you have for me in your
- 6:41word. You tell me that no corrupt
- 6:44communication proceed from my mouth, but only that which is
- 6:48edifying so that it may minister grace to those that hear it.
- 6:52And so God, I'm holding on to your word, and I believe that
- 6:56you can cleanse me. And so God, I'm coming to you
- 6:58again and again and I am pleading your promise.
- 7:03That's just one illustration. You could do 1000 different
- 7:06things that you hold God to His word.
- 7:10Verse 171 my lips pour out praise for you.
- 7:14Teach me your statutes is the result of you hearing a Bible
- 7:21study podcast or a sermon or a small group lesson or you know
- 7:27whatever else have you is the result of you hearing the word
- 7:31of God. Do you respond in praise?
- 7:34Is your automatic thought not just like, OK, what do I do
- 7:38different? But are you saying to God, God,
- 7:40thank you that you are showing me a different way to live at a
- 7:44different way to expect things in my life?
- 7:47God, thank you that you are blazing a new path for me that I
- 7:52would not have walked on my own that I haven't been walking.
- 7:56Are you thankful for what Jesus has done for you?
- 7:58Are you thankful for the illustrations and examples given
- 8:02in scripture so that you can feel like you are not just the
- 8:07worst person that's ever lived, but that you can go OK?
- 8:10God, I mess up in so many ways. I'm so sorry.
- 8:14Thank you that I am not Samson. That dude was messed up or thank
- 8:18you that you know, I'm, I'm not saying some of the dumb things
- 8:21that Peter is saying or thank you that I'm not going through
- 8:25the stuff that Job went through. The Scriptures can give us
- 8:30comfort and encouragement and it ought to result in US giving
- 8:35praise to God. The the goal of scripture is the
- 8:40glorification of God. The goal of Scripture is not how
- 8:44do you change your life. The goal of Scripture is God is
- 8:48worthy of all worship and he is transforming everything,
- 8:52including you and me, so that we would follow and and praise and
- 8:58love and know him. Verse 172 my tongue sings about
- 9:03your promise for all your commands are righteous.
- 9:08I you guys know I'm a big guy on singing, singing to the Lord,
- 9:14singing about him. I've given you guys 1000
- 9:18different song recommendations or quoted, you know hundreds of
- 9:22hymns during my time on Tabernacle talk.
- 9:25I am big about singing to the Lord.
- 9:28Why do we sing about Him? It is because of his promise.
- 9:32It's His word, it's what He has declared to us.
- 9:34It is what Jesus has accomplished.
- 9:36And so because of what the word says, we sing about Him.
- 9:41Now there are definitely times, frankly, even in my life that I
- 9:45have, I have written songs because of a season of my life
- 9:51that God has brought me through. And so I figured, OK, the
- 9:57response that I can have from this is to sing, but the only
- 10:01reason that I knew about God was because of his Word.
- 10:04And so the word ought to cause us to sing.
- 10:09Verse 173 May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen
- 10:15your precepts. He says, God, I know how life
- 10:18goes. I'm about to get into some
- 10:21trouble. There's going to be some
- 10:22difficulties going on here. And so I need you to have your
- 10:26hand at the ready to help me because I'm walking your way.
- 10:30I'm not walking my own. I'm not going to, you know, do
- 10:32dumb stuff. I'm not going to steal from
- 10:34people. I'm not going to kill someone
- 10:35and then be like, oh, God, protect me.
- 10:36No, he says, I've chosen your precepts.
- 10:40I'm following your way. But life is crazy.
- 10:42And so I'm going to need you to intervene.
- 10:44I'm going to need you to help. I'm going to need you to
- 10:45provide. I'm going to need you to silence
- 10:48the the enemies and so he says God, may your hand be ready to
- 10:53help me. Frankly, even as we enter into
- 10:56this new year, that's a prayer request that I feel like I'm
- 11:01praying to the Lord to say God, I am excited about the things
- 11:06that are happening in my church. I'm excited about the great
- 11:12steps that people are taking in, in following the Lord.
- 11:17I'm excited for some people that are diving into serving in a way
- 11:22that they haven't before. And I love all of that.
- 11:27But as a as a pastor, and maybe this just might be a human thing
- 11:31too. I'm always waiting for the other
- 11:35foot to fall. And I know especially on the
- 11:38days where I'm like, man, it's so great.
- 11:40This is awesome. I'm so thankful God is so good.
- 11:44I know that I'm going to enter into a season where there's some
- 11:49hardship that that comes and, you know, someone will insult or
- 11:54slander or deride me in some way.
- 11:56Or they'll be, you know, some big problem between some people
- 12:01at the church or we might have, you know, someone at the church
- 12:05that that goes through just a crazy health struggle.
- 12:08And so even right now, I'm trying to hold both.
- 12:12God, you are so good. I'm going to praise you also.
- 12:15God, would you have your hand ready to help me?
- 12:17Because things are going well right now.
- 12:20And so I know that Satan's going to try and distract and destroy
- 12:25and and denigrate man. I just cannot stop alliterating.
- 12:32So Satan's going to try all this stuff.
- 12:33So, God, would you be ready to help me?
- 12:35Satan's ready to destroy. Would you be ready to help?
- 12:39Verse 174 I long for your salvation, Yahweh, and your
- 12:44instruction is my delight and I I cannot imagine.
- 12:50I'm so thankful that the Lord has saved me, but I cannot
- 12:53imagine what it will be like on that day when I am reunited with
- 12:58my God, the one that my soul was made for and that ultimate
- 13:03salvation where I never again have to struggle with the here
- 13:07and now I won't have to struggle with.
- 13:08I know right now we got a bunch of people that have the the
- 13:11Super flu. And so I'm excited for for not
- 13:16having to deal with illness anymore, for being reunited with
- 13:20my loved ones that have died that the know Jesus.
- 13:25I am so excited for it. And so I echo here this call.
- 13:28I long for your salvation, Lord. And then here your instruction
- 13:31is my delight. I want to find joy in the word
- 13:34of God. I don't ever want to do
- 13:36Tabernacle talk just because OK, well, I said it's on weekdays
- 13:40and so I guess I got to do it. No, I I want to be excited about
- 13:44it. I want to delight in the Word of
- 13:46God. Verse 175.
- 13:48This has been just a very consistent phrase that the
- 13:52psalmist just said, Let me live and I will praise you.
- 13:55May your judgments help me. I see here at the end of verse
- 14:01175. May your judgments help me.
- 14:04Many times we fear the judgment of God.
- 14:07We don't want God to judge us. But when we are walking with
- 14:11God, God's judgments are not scary.
- 14:14They're not something that we want to avoid.
- 14:17When we're walking with God, His judgments mean that those that
- 14:21aren't walking with the Lord are stopped and it is for our good.
- 14:27Can I ask you right now, would you want God to bring justice
- 14:33into your life or would you say no?
- 14:37If God brought justice into my life right now, I would be
- 14:41judged for a lot of things that I'm doing or that I'm saying or
- 14:44that I'm participating in. And I think for me, I want to be
- 14:49consistently going to the Lord, like repenting of sin and
- 14:53saying, God, I want you to bring your justice, your, your Kingdom
- 14:58into my life. And so that means that I have to
- 15:01not live for me, not live my way.
- 15:04I need to live your way. I would encourage you to pray
- 15:07that as well. God, may the way that I am
- 15:10living mean that God's justice or his judgment being brought
- 15:14into my life would be a good thing because it means that it's
- 15:17not hitting me, it's hitting others.
- 15:21And then ending with verse 176, I wander like a lost sheep.
- 15:26You can think of. Come now, found the last verse
- 15:28of it. Prone to wander.
- 15:29Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.
- 15:32Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it.
- 15:35Seal it for thy courts above. So here we can all wander.
- 15:41We are told all of us, like sheep have gone astray.
- 15:44We've turned every one of us to our own way, and yet the Lord
- 15:48has laid on Jesus the iniquity, the sin of us all.
- 15:53And so because Jesus was punished for our sin, for our
- 15:56wandering, now we can be reconciled to God.
- 16:00The end of verse 176. Seek your servant, for I do not
- 16:04forget your commands, God, even when I am where I shouldn't be,
- 16:08would you pursue me? I can think of Psalm 23 as well.
- 16:13Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my
- 16:17life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
- 16:22Wow, 22 episodes, 22 sections of Psalm 119 are now done.
- 16:29I don't even know what I'm going to do now that I just get to
- 16:32say, OK, this is Psalm 120 and just go right in after 176 verse
- 16:39Psalm that we just completed. Next episode is only 7 verses.
- 16:45So I'm excited for it, looking forward to it and it'll be a
- 16:48great time together. Thanks for tuning in.
- 16:50See you next time.
