Where Do Insects Go in Winter?
Where Do Insects Go in Winter?
A Northwoods yard can be buzzing with mosquitoes, butterflies, bees, and beetles in summer and look completely empty by January. But winter does not erase the insect world. We explore how different insects survive as eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults; how diapause differs from simply slowing down; and how natural antifreeze, protected hiding places, and even snow help insects survive. You may look at your autumn leaf piles and garden stems a little differently after this episode.
