- 0:05Speaker 1: Is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the best
- 0:08Speaker 1: inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC from
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Hour number three
- 0:29Speaker 2: on a Tuesday begins with my good friend, longtime co-host
- 0:32Speaker 2: of mine, Football expert in both college and the NFL
- 0:36Speaker 2: and the occasional gambler as well, Jeff Schwartz.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Welcome, sir. How are you?
- 0:42Speaker 4: I'm good, buddy. How are we doing?
- 0:43Speaker 5: Doing great. It's a beautiful day in Salt Lake City.
- 0:46Speaker 5: Having a fun time today. We asked this at the
- 0:50Speaker 5: beginning of the show today about Utah football.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Is there a.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Program-defining victory in your mind for Oregon football. Is there
- 0:58Speaker 5: one that your experience as a former Oregon Duck, an
- 1:02Speaker 5: Oregon fan, whatever, you look back at that and you say,
- 1:05Speaker 5: that is when we showed the world who we were?
- 1:10Speaker 4: Well, I feel like I certainly was part of one
- 1:13Speaker 4: of those games in 2007 when we finally beat USC, right?
- 1:16Speaker 4: That was like, oh, we're here, right? We USC with
- 1:20Speaker 4: Pete Carroll for so many years. had dominated out west,
- 1:25Speaker 4: and we finally beat them at home. It was a
- 1:26Speaker 4: great game, a great day. I felt like that was
- 1:30Speaker 4: a way for us to show that we're here. I
- 1:33Speaker 4: think we've had other program-defining wins since then. We just
- 1:37Speaker 4: haven't been able to win the big one yet, but
- 1:40Speaker 4: we've had, whether it was, I think, the Florida State
- 1:42Speaker 4: playoff win in 2014 was a big one, obviously, before losing, unfortunately,
- 1:46Speaker 4: to Ohio State. we've had plenty of wins along the
- 1:50Speaker 4: way where it's felt like it's defined us in the positive. Unfortunately,
- 1:54Speaker 4: I think every school has the other way, right? We
- 1:56Speaker 4: just have these losses. You're like, geez, man. I think
- 1:59Speaker 4: the losses feel almost like they have more weight than
- 2:02Speaker 4: the wins do sometimes.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Yeah, we're going to try to stay on the positive
- 2:06Speaker 5: side of things.
- 2:08Speaker 4: My point is I remember way more the losses that
- 2:12Speaker 4: were defining than I think I do the wins, unfortunately.
- 2:15Speaker 5: There's been a lot of noise around college game day
- 2:20Speaker 5: going to a fourth sec school or sec meetup right
- 2:25Speaker 5: and like we know that there's an espn and sec
- 2:29Speaker 5: partnership and obviously uh is it being exaggerated or is
- 2:32Speaker 5: this something that actually needs to be addressed be addressed
- 2:35Speaker 5: in order to like maximize what game day is supposed
- 2:38Speaker 5: to be for college football.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Well uh i mean big new kickoff goes to 90
- 2:45Speaker 4: of big Big Ten games, right? Now they do. They
- 2:48Speaker 4: went to Big 12 last week. That was a special
- 2:50Speaker 4: game in London. And, you know, they might show up
- 2:53Speaker 4: at a Holy War, right? I mean, they have a
- 2:54Speaker 4: Big 12 deal, right? So that makes sense. But the
- 2:58Speaker 4: SEC and the ESPN are in it together. Of course
- 3:02Speaker 4: they're going to choose that. I think game day has
- 3:04Speaker 4: really evolved from what it used to be anyways. I
- 3:08Speaker 4: don't think it still has the same– it's not the
- 3:10Speaker 4: same show that it was previously, which is fine. It's
- 3:13Speaker 4: a different show for different people, and that's okay. but
- 3:16Speaker 4: it's certainly not been what it has been in the
- 3:18Speaker 4: past where I think it's just been a purely a
- 3:21Speaker 4: celebration of, of the game, the best story of the week,
- 3:23Speaker 4: like all those things. I'm not sure that that's the
- 3:25Speaker 4: case anymore, which again, I mean, things are changing. Times
- 3:27Speaker 4: are changing. It's okay. It's not what it used to be,
- 3:31Speaker 4: but we have to acknowledge that. It's just, it's not
- 3:34Speaker 4: what the show used to be. I don't watch the
- 3:35Speaker 4: show at all. Now. I, I just don't know if
- 3:38Speaker 4: you feel the same way, but it's just not really
- 3:40Speaker 4: a show for me anymore.
- 3:41Speaker 3: You know what I still love?
- 3:44Speaker 5: I shouldn't say still love because it's kind of a
- 3:45Speaker 5: new feature since Pat McAfee jumped on. I do love
- 3:49Speaker 5: letting the kids do the charity kick. I love the kids,
- 3:53Speaker 5: the random campus kids kicking field goals.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I think it's awesome.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I would actually tune in to watch Corso do the
- 3:59Speaker 4: headgear still. If I didn't watch. If they're at Oregon,
- 4:02Speaker 4: I would watch the first 15 minutes when they were
- 4:05Speaker 4: there just because I thought it was pretty cool. They
- 4:06Speaker 4: would show the crowd everything, the fans. And then I
- 4:09Speaker 4: would tune back in for Corso's headgear pick, because I
- 4:12Speaker 4: thought it was just the best ever, right? And there's
- 4:14Speaker 4: no way to replicate that, so it's not their fault, right?
- 4:16Speaker 4: You're not going to replicate that. But also, I've said
- 4:18Speaker 4: this before, I think McAfee is a phenomenal talent, right?
- 4:24Speaker 4: There's no way, I think anyone who denies that is
- 4:26Speaker 4: just full of themselves, right? He might not be the
- 4:28Speaker 4: best singer in the world, but as an entertainer, he
- 4:30Speaker 4: is very talented. But he's just not my cup of tea. Like,
- 4:33Speaker 4: there's nothing wrong with that, right? Like, I think he's
- 4:35Speaker 4: a very talented entertainer. I think his WWE stuff is great.
- 4:38Speaker 4: I think he's his radio show or whatever YouTube program,
- 4:41Speaker 4: like he gets great guests. Like that's a big boost
- 4:44Speaker 4: that he gets able to get those guests. And they
- 4:45Speaker 4: say things on his show. Like he gets them to say,
- 4:47Speaker 4: those are all positives. It's just not my thing. Like,
- 4:49Speaker 4: it's not really like my thing to listen to him talk,
- 4:51Speaker 4: talk about football. Yeah, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 4:55Speaker 4: If you want to come and be like, you're a hater.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I'm not a hater. I, I love to have his job, man.
- 4:59Speaker 4: He's done a great job. He built this all for himself.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Just like, I don't find it interesting though. It's all right.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Uh, Big matchups.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Texas-Tennessee, the aforementioned game day destination. That's ranked versus ranked.
- 5:12Speaker 5: We've had few of those in the early part of
- 5:15Speaker 5: the season. Ole Miss-Florida ranked versus ranked. Iowa-Michigan ranked versus ranked. Obviously,
- 5:21Speaker 5: Oregon-USC is in this category as well. A & M- LSU,
- 5:27Speaker 5: I'm taking out Oregon-USC because we'll give that its own
- 5:30Speaker 5: attention here in just a little minute. Missouri-Mississippi State.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Any of these... stand out from the others for you?
- 5:38Speaker 4: I mean, Texas-Tennessee feels big because of what Texas did
- 5:40Speaker 4: to Ohio State, right? And if they win this game,
- 5:42Speaker 4: I think you have to look at them as the
- 5:44Speaker 4: best team in the country, right? And, you know, they
- 5:46Speaker 4: want to be that best team in the country, and
- 5:48Speaker 4: you win against Ohio State, you follow that up with
- 5:50Speaker 4: another win against a ranked Tennessee team, that feels like
- 5:54Speaker 4: a pretty good way to start the season. And it
- 5:57Speaker 4: really gives you any cushion, right, for a couple losses.
- 6:00Speaker 4: down the stretch here. So that game, to me, is
- 6:02Speaker 4: really fascinating for that reason. I think the really fun one,
- 6:04Speaker 4: it's really interesting. So, you know, Ole Miss, they just
- 6:07Speaker 4: beat LSU, right? Like, great win for Ole Miss. Felt
- 6:09Speaker 4: like a, you know, karma for Lane and whatnot. Do
- 6:13Speaker 4: you know who's favored in this game?
- 6:15Speaker 1: No.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Florida's favored by three at home.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Oh, wait, I actually did see this.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Summerall was like, yeah, there's a lot of good drugs
- 6:21Speaker 5: out there because he doesn't want his team to be favored.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Favored by three after Ole Miss just beat LSU. So, like,
- 6:28Speaker 4: Is that.
- 6:29Speaker 3: A prediction of an emotional hangover type game?
- 6:31Speaker 5: No.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Here's the thing. I have a buddy. You guys should
- 6:35Speaker 4: listen to Bear Bets. It's a podcast I do with
- 6:37Speaker 4: Chris Felica and Sammy P. Sammy has a power rankings.
- 6:41Speaker 4: He makes his power rankings through various different techniques. That
- 6:44Speaker 4: power rankings is how he makes those point spreads. It's
- 6:48Speaker 4: out of 100. Georgia, I think, is like a 98.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Ohio State's a 90 out of 100. Utah's probably, my guess,
- 6:54Speaker 4: like 88. And then So basically it's that simple. Like if,
- 6:58Speaker 4: if Ohio state played Utah neutral, they'd be, they'd be
- 7:02Speaker 4: 10 point favorite, but that's how simple it is. It's
- 7:04Speaker 4: just off the power rankings. Now, of course you adjust
- 7:06Speaker 4: for home field advantage, right? So let's say that, you know,
- 7:09Speaker 4: the game is in Utah. You give Utah four points
- 7:11Speaker 4: for home field advantage. The game is Ohio state minus six.
- 7:14Speaker 4: So people just have Florida rated based off of the
- 7:17Speaker 4: way they play so far this season rated a lot
- 7:19Speaker 4: higher than me and you do. And so that's how
- 7:22Speaker 4: the rankings are made. Like it's not, It's not just
- 7:26Speaker 4: sort of out of nowhere. Florida's played good football. You know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: the Baylor game, they, you know, no, that was Auburn.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I'm sorry. Florida just, who did they beat last week? Oh, Auburn.
- 7:36Speaker 4: They beat Auburn last week pretty handily. Like, they're playing
- 7:39Speaker 4: good football. So I think that's what it is. It's
- 7:41Speaker 4: Ole Miss, maybe not as good as their record, according
- 7:45Speaker 4: to people that make the numbers, right, Sean? On the road,
- 7:47Speaker 4: so you give maybe Florida six points for the swamp, right?
- 7:50Speaker 4: So maybe neutral site, Ole Miss here by three in
- 7:53Speaker 4: this game. And that's how it works, right?
- 7:57Speaker 5: The university of Utah beat Utah state this last weekend,
- 8:00Speaker 5: 33 to zero things, you know, like they got a
- 8:04Speaker 5: little bit dodgy in the second half as you're starting
- 8:07Speaker 5: to rotate some backups in and stuff, but you still,
- 8:10Speaker 5: you blanked an opponent, you dominated the game.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And interestingly enough.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Morgan Scali, as we asked about the offensive line over
- 8:20Speaker 5: and over and over again, praises the guys and says, yeah, we're,
- 8:23Speaker 5: We're going to get it dialed in in the next.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Couple of weeks who the starting five actually are.
- 8:27Speaker 5: And you and I have talked about this every single
- 8:29Speaker 5: week because you played offensive line at the very highest level. And, like,
- 8:33Speaker 5: I thought this might be the case, that they would
- 8:35Speaker 5: still be figuring things out as they got into Big
- 8:38Speaker 5: 12 play. We've seen now Kelvin Obot, the number one recruit.
- 8:42Speaker 5: We've seen him play left guard with the ones. We've
- 8:44Speaker 5: seen him play left tackles with the twos and threes.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And is there any– should there be any sense of
- 8:52Speaker 5: unease or alarm– that we don't know who the real
- 8:56Speaker 5: starting five are as you head into more meaningful games?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Short way to say it, a little bit, yes. I
- 9:03Speaker 4: actually feel this way about Oregon right now, where Oregon,
- 9:05Speaker 4: you know, we got to go to USC this weekend,
- 9:08Speaker 4: and we're still sort of rotating offensive linemen. And in
- 9:12Speaker 4: some positions, like, we're pretty much set at tackle, I think.
- 9:16Speaker 4: But guard, and they're still rotating tackles. I think it's
- 9:18Speaker 4: still a little uncertain. And I... I'm curious. You want
- 9:24Speaker 4: to go into a USC game with a full understanding,
- 9:28Speaker 4: I think, of what you want to be on offense.
- 9:30Speaker 4: You're Utah. You go to Iowa State. I would say
- 9:33Speaker 4: it's not great, but you're on the road for your
- 9:36Speaker 4: first road game with this new staff. You'd like to
- 9:39Speaker 4: have an offensive line, I think, more set in stone.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I just feel like for Oregon, I'm kind of like,
- 9:47Speaker 4: I don't love that our offensive line is not really
- 9:49Speaker 4: set yet as we head into... I looked at USC
- 9:52Speaker 4: as being of this is our five, right? And you
- 9:55Speaker 4: play three games now. I'm just not sure we're there.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't decide.
- 10:00Speaker 5: How I'm supposed to feel about it because I think
- 10:02Speaker 5: you've gotten good things out of each guy. And like
- 10:04Speaker 5: one guy was hurt and he's, he got his first
- 10:08Speaker 5: action against Utah state and it's like, all right, well
- 10:10Speaker 5: maybe it makes sense, but sounds like there's still some flux. And,
- 10:16Speaker 5: You don't want flux. That's one position group where you
- 10:19Speaker 5: want it to be pretty definitive. At least that's always
- 10:21Speaker 5: been my perception.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yes. So, you know, you have to work through that. Again,
- 10:27Speaker 4: they're not the only team that has to work through
- 10:29Speaker 4: these issues, but it does feel like, you know, not
- 10:32Speaker 4: in the best situation where you head into your first
- 10:34Speaker 4: road game and you're sort of not set on those yet.
- 10:37Speaker 5: If you're able to run effectively on the edges, but
- 10:41Speaker 5: anytime you try to go inside, and this is like
- 10:44Speaker 5: two questions, blanket of a statement because Utah's had success
- 10:47Speaker 5: in both areas, but it seems kind of clear at
- 10:50Speaker 5: this moment that they're better at running off tackle than
- 10:53Speaker 5: they are inside.
- 10:56Speaker 3: What explains that from the offensive line perspective?
- 11:01Speaker 4: Well, it would probably explain that your offensive line can't
- 11:05Speaker 4: sustain blocks inside the tackles very well, right? Because a
- 11:09Speaker 4: lot of outside tackle blocking, is it are they running
- 11:13Speaker 4: stretch or are you just getting the quarterbacks outside the pocket?
- 11:16Speaker 4: You know, RPOs and stuff like that. I mean, there's
- 11:17Speaker 4: a big difference in what, you know, Oregon has done
- 11:21Speaker 4: some of that this year, too, where they've had much
- 11:22Speaker 4: better success running the ball outside of tackles, but a
- 11:24Speaker 4: lot of that has been just sort of, we're not
- 11:27Speaker 4: even going to, you know, it's not the offensive lines
- 11:30Speaker 4: that just get the ball on the edge, right, via design, right?
- 11:33Speaker 4: The offensive line's not really blocking anybody. So is it
- 11:36Speaker 4: more like outside zone is working, Sean, or is it more, that,
- 11:40Speaker 4: you know, what's working is just off, you know, is
- 11:43Speaker 4: the quarterback run stuff.
- 11:46Speaker 5: The quarterback run, they haven't had to lean as hard
- 11:48Speaker 5: on the quarterback run stuff, really.
- 11:51Speaker 4: So it probably just means that there's still work to
- 11:54Speaker 4: do there inside, interior-wise, right? Because running the ball between
- 11:58Speaker 4: tackles is a lot of just, you know, it's technique, fundamentals, strain.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Some of it's formationally, right? Just making sure you guys
- 12:05Speaker 4: are in the right place and you have good leverage.
- 12:07Speaker 4: But a lot of it is really just comes down to, like,
- 12:10Speaker 4: You know, are we straining? Are we finishing? There's a
- 12:13Speaker 4: lot of movement inside, right? Tackles move, linebackers move. Are
- 12:17Speaker 4: we ready for that movement? A lot of times when
- 12:19Speaker 4: you run the ball outside, you can catch them in
- 12:22Speaker 4: a stunt or in a blitz and, like, run away
- 12:24Speaker 4: from it and stuff. So I think that's, to me,
- 12:26Speaker 4: just all those things are very impactful here.
- 12:31Speaker 5: You and I spend a lot of time talking about
- 12:33Speaker 5: the difference between, like, pressure and manufactured pressure from defenses.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Yep.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Guys, you know, your front four getting wins and things
- 12:40Speaker 5: like that, and then your defensive coordinator having to help
- 12:44Speaker 5: everyone out. And that feels like a feature right now
- 12:49Speaker 5: for the University of Utah defense where they did figure
- 12:53Speaker 5: out how to get some pressure, but it's not– your
- 12:56Speaker 5: defensive ends are not winning and getting sacks. Now, they
- 13:00Speaker 5: are getting pressures. They are getting hurries, which– Some people
- 13:03Speaker 5: say it's just as important of a stat. I don't
- 13:05Speaker 5: know where you fall on that one. But, you know,
- 13:07Speaker 5: we've seen this team now really, you know, bringing a lot.
- 13:11Speaker 5: And it's great in weeks one, two and three when
- 13:15Speaker 5: you haven't seen it or you've been able to dial
- 13:17Speaker 5: up something new. I start to get more concerned when
- 13:21Speaker 5: you put more and more stuff on film and it
- 13:23Speaker 5: becomes more and more recognizable and an offensive coordinator changes.
- 13:26Speaker 5: is more and more likely to be able to scheme
- 13:28Speaker 5: against it and recognize it and say, all right, we're
- 13:30Speaker 5: going to throw to that spot where Nate Ritchie, your safety,
- 13:32Speaker 5: used to be, et cetera. How do you parse that
- 13:36Speaker 5: out and fix that for a defense?
- 13:39Speaker 4: Well, obviously you hope that some of your front four
- 13:45Speaker 4: start getting a little bit better. The reason why you
- 13:47Speaker 4: want to rush four, obviously, is that leaves seven players
- 13:50Speaker 4: that are in coverage. The more players you have in coverage,
- 13:53Speaker 4: in theory, the better your pass defense should be. you know, I,
- 13:57Speaker 4: hurries to me are fine. I mean, I think if
- 13:59Speaker 4: you rate them, it's like, you know, hurries, you know, pressures, hits, sacks, right?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Like those, you know, your hurry is fine, but it's,
- 14:07Speaker 4: does a hurry mean the quarterback is off his spot
- 14:09Speaker 4: and still throwing the ball? Is it a hurry with
- 14:12Speaker 4: someone else getting a pressure, right? I mean, you know,
- 14:13Speaker 4: so it's like, it depends on what it is. Look,
- 14:17Speaker 4: colleges throw the ball so fast, Sean, it's sometimes hard
- 14:21Speaker 4: to really tell if a pass rush stinks or or
- 14:24Speaker 4: the ball's gone too fast, right? I think you'll get
- 14:26Speaker 4: a good test this week. I mean, Iowa State probably
- 14:28Speaker 4: is not a team that's going to throw the ball
- 14:29Speaker 4: fast all the time, right? They're going to hold the
- 14:32Speaker 4: ball a little bit longer on third downs. They have
- 14:34Speaker 4: the players to do that. Utah State's throwing the ball
- 14:35Speaker 4: fast all the time, right? That's what they do. And
- 14:38Speaker 4: then as far as, you know, you can still generate
- 14:43Speaker 4: pressure with four rushers with sim pressures, right? We talk
- 14:46Speaker 4: about the simulated pressure. You show, look this way, bring
- 14:50Speaker 4: four guys that way, and you still have seven in coverage.
- 14:52Speaker 4: There's ways to mitigate that. But ideally, you would love
- 14:54Speaker 4: to be a team that just got home with your
- 14:56Speaker 4: four defensive linemen.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Jeff Schwartz, our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 15:00Speaker 5: talking all things college football. How much can you know
- 15:04Speaker 5: about a team before they go on the road? Utah's
- 15:06Speaker 5: had three in a row at home.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Nothing. Really? Nothing? I mean, what do you think? I mean,
- 15:13Speaker 4: I think, I hope it's more than nothing. I think
- 15:17Speaker 4: so far it's been a check the box, right?
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Check the box. Good job. But until you go on
- 15:25Speaker 4: the road, I think that's really hard to tell what
- 15:27Speaker 4: your team's road conference game, your team's going to be.
- 15:30Speaker 4: I mean, look, not to make fun of USC for
- 15:32Speaker 4: the time in a row, but I mean, how much
- 15:36Speaker 4: do we hear? Like USC is different this year. They're different.
- 15:39Speaker 4: And they go first road conference game. Look exactly the
- 15:42Speaker 4: same team. Like it's had for five years in a
- 15:43Speaker 4: row now.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Right?
- 15:44Speaker 4: Like it's, it's, it's, it just has held true for,
- 15:50Speaker 4: for many teams over the years.
- 15:53Speaker 5: All right, let's talk about one of the other big
- 15:55Speaker 5: ranked versus ranked games because you're a former Oregon Duck.
- 15:58Speaker 5: And to give some insight into the group chat, usually,
- 16:02Speaker 5: you know, we have fun talking trash to our guy Kono, who's,
- 16:07Speaker 5: for whatever reason, a USC fan.
- 16:09Speaker 3: We usually team up on him.
- 16:11Speaker 5: But you've been reticent this week because I think it
- 16:15Speaker 5: seems like maybe you're a little bit scared for your Ducks.
- 16:19Speaker 4: I just don't know what team's going to show up. So...
- 16:22Speaker 4: We played the first two games, and then Portland State,
- 16:24Speaker 4: we beat them 84-0. I think everyone saw that.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Why is Dan Lanning still throwing passes with 30 seconds
- 16:30Speaker 5: left in a 77-0 game?
- 16:33Speaker 4: I think because the four-string quarterback was in with the
- 16:35Speaker 4: four-string wide receivers. He just wanted to have those guys
- 16:40Speaker 4: play a little bit. I mean, he said he asked
- 16:42Speaker 4: the Portland State coach if they wanted to cut down
- 16:44Speaker 4: the time, because you can cut down the time, right?
- 16:45Speaker 4: You can go to 10-minute quarters. He said no. So,
- 16:49Speaker 4: I mean.
- 16:51Speaker 3: No, it's fine. As long as you feel good about it,
- 16:53Speaker 3: that's fine.
- 16:54Speaker 4: I just don't care.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Tells me who you are as a bully. Who cares?
- 16:58Speaker 4: But nonetheless, so what team shows up? So the team
- 17:05Speaker 4: that we saw the first two games schematically offensively was
- 17:08Speaker 4: boring and bland and just like pretty bad. The team
- 17:12Speaker 4: we saw against Portland State looked like a different offense,
- 17:15Speaker 4: like just schematically. It was a different, like they looked
- 17:17Speaker 4: different offensively as far as what they did. It looked
- 17:20Speaker 4: like they decided, like, we kind of have to try
- 17:22Speaker 4: a little bit more on offense, which is a terrible
- 17:24Speaker 4: thing to say. But the offense was just completely different.
- 17:28Speaker 4: And so, like, my question is, what are we seeing
- 17:31Speaker 4: from this team with the offense against USC? If we
- 17:34Speaker 4: see that structure, we have a chance. If we see
- 17:37Speaker 4: defensive effort, we have a chance. If we don't, we're
- 17:40Speaker 4: going to lose. I feel very strongly that USC is
- 17:43Speaker 4: the same team they've always been. Like, I don't feel
- 17:45Speaker 4: like this is a team that's any different than what
- 17:47Speaker 4: they've been, Sean, over the years. They're the same team.
- 17:50Speaker 4: They showed against Rutgers, right? So the question becomes, obviously,
- 17:54Speaker 4: is that what are you getting from Oregon this week?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Are you getting, like, what we got, again, against Portland State?
- 18:01Speaker 4: Or are you getting what we got against, you know,
- 18:03Speaker 4: just structurally, structurally, not like, you know, we're not playing
- 18:06Speaker 4: with Portland State. Or do you get more of the
- 18:09Speaker 4: Oklahoma State, Boise State type of play from our offense?
- 18:14Speaker 4: If you tell me what that is, I'll tell you
- 18:15Speaker 4: who's going to win the game. I... Just don't know.
- 18:20Speaker 4: It's not good to not know, right? I feel like
- 18:22Speaker 4: that's terrible to like carry this big game.
- 18:24Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Are we going to be our best or not? So
- 18:27Speaker 4: I hate that that's the thought process, but it is, man. Look,
- 18:32Speaker 4: USC looks exactly like they've always been. They have two
- 18:35Speaker 4: defensive linemen that are better than usual, 97 and 94
- 18:39Speaker 4: was a true freshman, 94. But otherwise, Rutgers is terrible, bro.
- 18:44Speaker 4: And Rutgers moved the ball up and down the field
- 18:45Speaker 4: on them with ease. They're They're not going to stop
- 18:50Speaker 4: anyone good this year. They still have to play Oregon,
- 18:52Speaker 4: Ohio State, Indiana, Washington. It's a brutal schedule for USC.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Did you get a chance to watch any Houston-Texas Tech
- 19:00Speaker 5: on Friday night?
- 19:00Speaker 4: I did, yes.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Yeah? Why?
- 19:02Speaker 3: It was a great game.
- 19:03Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Down to the final inches on the last second tackle, right?
- 19:08Speaker 5: So pretty cool. But when you look at either of
- 19:13Speaker 5: those great teams, I mean, Texas Tech, we've kind of like...
- 19:16Speaker 5: People have gotten enamored with the fact that they bought
- 19:19Speaker 5: this crazy roster again, and I haven't been overly impressed
- 19:23Speaker 5: with them. I think Houston's good. I think Texas Tech
- 19:26Speaker 5: is good. I don't think either are great. I just
- 19:28Speaker 5: want you to confirm my biases, I guess.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Well, I mean, think about this. Texas Tech lost three
- 19:37Speaker 4: NFL defensive linemen, right?
- 19:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:41Speaker 4: They lost a quarterback who was good, and they replaced
- 19:43Speaker 4: him with the quarterback that they thought was going to
- 19:45Speaker 4: be good, who ended up being basically thrown out of
- 19:48Speaker 4: the sport. And they're not as good on the trenches.
- 19:55Speaker 4: They're just not as good this year. I understand the
- 19:57Speaker 4: excitement for them to be better this season. That made
- 20:02Speaker 4: sense because of what their success was last year. But
- 20:06Speaker 4: they're not better than last year. I would argue they're
- 20:08Speaker 4: worse this year. And I'm not sure Houston, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 4: Willie Fritz is awesome, like a good coach. I don't
- 20:13Speaker 4: know how good they are. But I think it's Tech
- 20:16Speaker 4: and Sports. But the thing about Tech is their schedule's
- 20:18Speaker 4: a joke, dude. Like, they don't play another ranked team
- 20:21Speaker 4: the rest of the season.
- 20:22Speaker 3: That's right.
- 20:23Speaker 4: So they're going to get to the Big 12 Championship game.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Maybe it's your Utes. Maybe it's BYU. Maybe it's Houston.
- 20:31Speaker 4: And they're going to play. This is their schedule. They
- 20:34Speaker 4: need to pick 12. Colorado, Arizona State. Cincinnati, Arizona, West Virginia.
- 20:39Speaker 4: West Virginia's a little spunky. They might be ranked by then,
- 20:41Speaker 4: but that's at home. At Oklahoma State, so maybe by
- 20:44Speaker 4: then Oklahoma State's sort of rounding into what they want
- 20:46Speaker 4: to be with Morris. Baylor and TCU. It's a pretty
- 20:50Speaker 4: easy schedule, man.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Yeah, you're hoping that West Virginia is actually good. You're
- 20:57Speaker 5: hoping that Oklahoma State is actually good. You're hoping that
- 20:59Speaker 5: TCU is actually good enough to challenge, and even in
- 21:03Speaker 5: those cases, you wouldn't be convinced. Even if they're good...
- 21:06Speaker 5: They're good enough to beat Texas Tech. Although I can't
- 21:09Speaker 5: complain too much about Texas Tech's schedule because Utah's got
- 21:12Speaker 5: a pretty friendly schedule themselves.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Yes, so a lot of things come down to schedule, man.
- 21:19Speaker 5: This is a one-bid league, though, right? We were having
- 21:25Speaker 5: a conversation earlier where, you know, like, yes, it's great
- 21:28Speaker 5: to see three Big 12 teams in the top 15,
- 21:31Speaker 5: but this is what the rankings did at These are
- 21:34Speaker 5: not college football playoff rankings, but this is what the
- 21:37Speaker 5: rankings did to us last year. They're just like, oh, look,
- 21:39Speaker 5: you got these Utah's there, Texas Tech's there, BYU's there.
- 21:43Speaker 5: And then it's like the committee knew like, oh, that's
- 21:45Speaker 5: going to come out in the wash and the Big
- 21:47Speaker 5: 12 is going to be a one bid league. There's
- 21:49Speaker 5: nothing that tells me as of yet that the plans
- 21:53Speaker 5: will be any different for this year's college football playoff field.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Well, I think it depends on what the Big 10 does, right?
- 22:00Speaker 4: If Oregon loses this weekend, they're out presumably, right? USC
- 22:05Speaker 4: is not making– they're not with their schedule making a playoff,
- 22:07Speaker 4: in my opinion. That leaves, obviously, Ohio State. What if
- 22:11Speaker 4: they drop a couple, right, with the loss of Texas?
- 22:15Speaker 4: The Big Ten might only get two or three, and
- 22:19Speaker 4: that allows someone else maybe to get in the mix, Sean.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I mean, the team I worry about more with the
- 22:28Speaker 4: Big 12 is Louisville. Louisville. Interesting. Like, Louisville's playing some
- 22:33Speaker 4: good football, right? They've now lost by three to Ole Miss,
- 22:36Speaker 4: and they've just beat SMU. And they– I don't know
- 22:42Speaker 4: if they get Miami this year or not. But, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 4: they can make it to the NCAA championship game and
- 22:48Speaker 4: certainly beat Miami. That's not, like, without question. And then
- 22:51Speaker 4: Miami's in and LSU's in, especially if Miami beats Notre
- 22:54Speaker 4: Dame later this season. Yeah, Louisville gets no Miami this year. it's,
- 23:01Speaker 4: it's a bunch of same as like Texas tech. There's
- 23:03Speaker 4: a bunch of non-ranked teams.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Uh, there was a time you were on the New
- 23:07Speaker 5: York giants roster. If you're on that New York giants
- 23:10Speaker 5: roster today, how are you feeling?
- 23:12Speaker 4: Not great. They just announced, I think darts worse than
- 23:14Speaker 4: we thought. So, um, look pretty bad in the moment. And, uh,
- 23:21Speaker 4: injuries are part of it, man. Part of the game. I,
- 23:26Speaker 4: I just, it stinks. I've been one of those guys.
- 23:28Speaker 4: I mean, I've been carded off. I didn't fist pump
- 23:31Speaker 4: like Caleb Williams and then come back a week later.
- 23:33Speaker 4: But I definitely, you know, I've been there before. It's
- 23:39Speaker 4: not very fun.
- 23:41Speaker 5: The memes that have come out of the Caleb Williams thing.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Oh, fantastic.
- 23:45Speaker 3: I spent years making fun of him when he was
- 23:47Speaker 3: at USC.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And obviously he holds a special place of hate in
- 23:52Speaker 5: a lot of Utah fans' hearts because of that. the
- 23:54Speaker 5: rivalry that developed in the, you know, the bleep Utah
- 23:57Speaker 5: and his fingernail paints and all that kind of stuff,
- 24:00Speaker 5: which is great.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I think he's a good player.
- 24:02Speaker 5: I think he's just like this whole thing.
- 24:06Speaker 3: You and I talked about it a lot.
- 24:08Speaker 5: He's like the Gen Z quarterback that nobody knows how
- 24:10Speaker 5: to handle a Gen Z quarterback.
- 24:12Speaker 3: That was the best representation. I think we've seen of it.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Like to him, that's totally acceptable behavior to the rest
- 24:18Speaker 5: of the NFL. And you, can speak to this in
- 24:21Speaker 5: a real way. Like, the rest of the NFL fraternity,
- 24:24Speaker 5: I imagine, is laughing at worst and cringing at best.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Oh, geez, foe. We are pro-dog.
- 24:34Speaker 3: It happens every week now, and we appreciate it.
- 24:36Speaker 4: I just don't understand what he's barking at. Maybe a
- 24:38Speaker 4: leaf blew by. My kids might be home, though, too.
- 24:41Speaker 4: That's also a possibility. Emmy and Norma just running through
- 24:45Speaker 4: here at some point.
- 24:46Speaker 1: So....
- 24:49Speaker 4: I don't even know what we're talking about anymore.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Just the reaction to Caleb Williams.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Oh yeah. Look, I, I think that you don't have
- 24:58Speaker 4: to have a reaction to everything. The memes have been really,
- 25:01Speaker 4: really good. They've been great. Um, but yeah, I mean, look,
- 25:05Speaker 4: he's a franchise quarterback. He thought he blew out his hamstring.
- 25:08Speaker 4: It's not being that, you know, I don't know. I
- 25:09Speaker 4: would have walked it off. I think I would have
- 25:11Speaker 4: walked it off, but I don't know, man. He got,
- 25:14Speaker 4: it's more of the fist pump, right? Like the, just
- 25:17Speaker 4: getting card off, um, the field's probably not a big deal,
- 25:20Speaker 4: but the fist pump at the end, like he's one
- 25:22Speaker 4: of those guys got, you know, boarded, right? Like on
- 25:24Speaker 4: a backboard. Yes. Like that, that's the part that probably, um, is,
- 25:30Speaker 4: is the thing that I think gets everyone right. It's
- 25:32Speaker 4: a fist pump. And then it means it's been great.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Like when, you know, when, you know, my wife asked
- 25:36Speaker 4: me to take the trash out, I do it on time.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Like all this stuff, it's just been like, it's been
- 25:40Speaker 4: so good.
- 25:41Speaker 5: The best one was the guy who said, uh, me
- 25:43Speaker 5: after sleeping on the uncomfortable couch when my wife gave birth.
- 25:46Speaker 1: That's.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 25:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 4: My kids were born in the middle of the day.
- 25:50Speaker 4: I never had to do that.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Oh, wow. Must be nice.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I guess.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Maybe the next one will be nighttime.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Buddy, there ain't no next one, my friend.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Just put it out there. Just put it out there
- 26:03Speaker 3: in the world for you.
- 26:04Speaker 4: It's fine. I mean, not because of my doing. I
- 26:07Speaker 4: don't know. Maybe she's got another... someone she's with, but
- 26:10Speaker 4: it ain't for me. No. So, like, we had Emmy
- 26:15Speaker 4: with IVF, and Meredith didn't tell me this, but she
- 26:18Speaker 4: went back to the doctor to, like, see if we
- 26:20Speaker 4: could have a third one. And the doctor was like, no.
- 26:22Speaker 4: That's not happening. So, I think medically she can't even
- 26:26Speaker 4: do it. So, because she said she did think about it. Oh, interesting. Yeah, so... Alright, well,
- 26:31Speaker 4: you're safe from another kid. Are you? Are you going
- 26:35Speaker 4: for more? Yeah. Who knows, man?
- 26:38Speaker 3: You never know.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Oh, I like it. Okay.
- 26:43Speaker 5: It's only two games, but Travis Kelsey looks really awesome
- 26:48Speaker 5: in these first two games. Is he, like, did marrying
- 26:52Speaker 5: the queen of pop, did this, like, re-energize him? Or
- 26:55Speaker 5: is this what we always should have expected from a
- 26:57Speaker 5: 37-year-old tight end?
- 27:00Speaker 4: I just think Hall of Famers are freak shows, dude.
- 27:04Speaker 4: And they... play longer than everyone else. They recover easier
- 27:09Speaker 4: than everyone else. They train better than everyone else. They
- 27:12Speaker 4: have the money and the resources to make that all happen.
- 27:14Speaker 4: And I just think he's a freak show, dude. And
- 27:17Speaker 4: I think that the Chiefs' offense with the way they're
- 27:20Speaker 4: running the football and the way they're able to use
- 27:23Speaker 4: other wide receivers, he doesn't have to do a lot, right?
- 27:25Speaker 4: He's not getting triple covered or double covered anymore. Remember
- 27:28Speaker 4: last year, you know, Hollywood, Xavier Worthy got hurt. Rasheed
- 27:32Speaker 4: Rice missed eight weeks. He gets singled up now. He's
- 27:36Speaker 4: not getting double teamed. Him and Mahomes are the two
- 27:40Speaker 4: fastest guys when someone's chasing them, I think, that ever recorded.
- 27:44Speaker 4: No one catches those two, and yet if you hadn't
- 27:46Speaker 4: run a 40, they'd run a 5-5. It's insane how
- 27:50Speaker 4: they know how to use their bodies. It's very impressive, dude.
- 27:53Speaker 4: I'm super impressed with the Chiefs' start so far this year.
- 27:57Speaker 4: the way they played. And we'll see. NFL's long. It's
- 28:01Speaker 4: so weird, right? The NFL, two games, right? And their
- 28:04Speaker 4: teams are 0-2, 1-1. And the teams that have lost,
- 28:08Speaker 4: like your fans, of course you don't want to lose,
- 28:09Speaker 4: but you're like, okay, we're 0-2, whatever. We're 2-0, whatever.
- 28:12Speaker 4: A long season. At a college football, you lose a game.
- 28:14Speaker 4: It's like the end of the world, dude.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that's kind of how it goes.
- 28:20Speaker 4: It is.
- 28:22Speaker 5: I don't know if we're going to like it better
- 28:25Speaker 5: if the college world expands the playoff and makes it
- 28:29Speaker 5: feel more like the NFL where you're like, ah, dang it,
- 28:32Speaker 5: we lost that one, but we'll be okay. You know,
- 28:34Speaker 5: I think that's part of the appeal of the college
- 28:37Speaker 5: football world where you want to be on the edge
- 28:40Speaker 5: of your seat and biting your fingernails over every single play.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Correct. And it's why college football is one of the
- 28:47Speaker 4: reasons why it's so different than the NFL.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Well, you're the man. Always appreciate you giving us time.
- 28:54Speaker 3: We'll talk again next week.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Okay, buddy. Take care. Have a good week.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Good luck to your ducks.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 29:00Speaker 5: That's Jeff Schwartz, college football and NFL insider.
