- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: All month on the show, everybody!
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be the trial of the raw-hide kid over on the main show, and you're gonna hear a lot of noxious, broke-back mountain stuff!
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: show this month.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: But today we get to delve into the world of the Texas Twister, who is one of my weird little Marvel favorite characters.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: I fucking love this guy.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: His story is hilarious, his visuals amazing.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so excited to be joined by two of my online friends.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, one of them are real life friends, because we met in real life.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: But Jay Cosmic is back every
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: one.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then my dear friend Terry Brown from Instagram, you may recognize him as Casey crypto online.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: And my initial question is have you ever been in a tornado?
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: We got a, we got a Texas twist I'm talking about today.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: Let me welcome Terry Brown to the show for the very first time.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Hello Terry.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to GreenWalkinLane.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, thank you.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm happy to be here.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: My name's Terry Perry Brown, pronouns are he and him.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_02]: I do have some experience with tornadoes having grown up in Kansas.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_02]: I used to joke that I'm not just a friend of Dorothy.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a neighbor.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: You might have been in that little scene in the wizard vase where like the witch rights by our bike in the middle of the day.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I grew up with with tornado warnings and and there was a really big one that tore three about five miles from my house in Kansas City, while I was living there that was it was impressive.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: I had a friend visit like six months later and as we're driving by the area where it had happened, it's a big wooded area and it looks like a giant hand it just kind of scooped down to the middle of the forest.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_02]: And at the bottom of the hill where the trench kind of went through, there was a house, and then there was a little bit of a trench in the ground, and then there was a foundation where a house had been, and then there was another house still intact.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it was wild how precise those can be.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: So
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, really kind of intense.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up in the Missouri Ozarks and there were tornado warnings constantly.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: Sort of like you could get worth cakes, earthquakes in California, which by the way, everyone Terry lives near Palm Springs.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: I was just in Palm Springs.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was a goddamn earthquake while I was there.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was pretty intense, actually.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: If you listen to the Avengers script read that opens this month, there is literally a pause where I say,
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, there was just an earthquake.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: It was literally live during the recording.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: So you can listen for my life reaction.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: Let me also welcome the lovely Jay Cosmic to the show.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Jay, it's been so long.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: How are you?
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, definitely.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you again for having me.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's been too long and I'm really glad to see you again and glad to see Cherry.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I am Jay Cosmic, but my,
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: actual name is Justin, either is fine, my pronouns are he, him, and I have not actually been in a tornado, but I have encountered plenty of warnings.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: I do come from Saskatchewan in Canada, which is essentially like the Midwest of the US for the American listeners.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: I will say, though, in elementary school, I was obsessed with tornadoes and the movie Twister, and my tis is showing there.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: So we've already referenced the Wizard of Oz and Twister, which are probably the two most popular tornado films, but there are certainly others out there.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's really interesting to me.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna talk a little bit about tornadoes today, but as we launched into the show this month, we're gonna be talking a lot about westerns and cowboys and rodeos and all kinds of things.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: I grew up in the Midwest and Hillbilly Country.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I also grew up Mormon and there's a weird amount of Western lore in both of those spaces, which was really shocking to me.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: I read a shit ton of Marvel 1950s cowboy comics, watched a bunch of films, and even then I started realizing, okay, I've watched Deadwood, I've watched Westworld, I've watched, there's all these films that have just kind of transcended from that John Wayne era on, and there's a certain lore that exists with cowboys.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: Then we get into the gay cowboy genre, broke back mountain of course being one that's kind of the pinnacle of all of that.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: What is each of your relationship with kind of this western genre?
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: Just and I know you live in Calgary with the Calgary Stampede and I've seen the little slutty outfits you like to wear.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of have a love hate relationship with the cowboy and western side of things So I live in Alberta, Canada, which we are the Texas of Canada Stampied every year.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: I actually book it off because I work in the middle of downtown and It is an absolute zoo and I just want to avoid it But I will admit I look at Westernware and getting all dressed up in cowboy gear is kind of like cosplay So it's like an excuse to dress up for me personally and Terry
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, yeah, I grew up in Kansas, so we were caught by Jason, and I told you earlier about when I was a kid, my reward for behaving myself in the grocery store was Mom, let me pick out a comic book.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_02]: I remember a few times picking up a kid called outlaw or the two-gun kid issues, and this was way back in the 70s when all the neighborhood kids would get together and go around and play out in the nearby fields.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_02]: And so we played a couple of
- 4:58[SPEAKER_02]: I was never a big country music fan, but my parents were.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_02]: And Cowboys are fun.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: So all of the episodes on the Patreon this month are X-Men Cowboy adjacent.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to have a great time.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then on the main show, the issues we're reviewing are Western adjacent, resulting in the Cowboy journey of the Rahide kid at the end of the month.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: Even our script read opening is that time the Avengers and Beast fought Kang the Conqueror in the old
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, we're going to be all over Cowboyship this month that's going to be a great time.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to open with the character of the Texas Twister, who is one of those weird ones I've been fond of for a really long time.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: I keep sharing a little snippets of when I worked at Marvel.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: When I was leaving the handbooks, I pitched four books to Marvel to try to get some things published.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: And right then, they were doing the 50-state initiative going into the dark rain.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the books that I pitched was a rangers book, like a limited series about the rangers.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of an all-access kids book.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: I tried to write different things.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: And the Texas Twister was a character.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: I grew very, very fond of as I got to write his thick, ridiculous southern draw.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a cool, our set.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's got an excellent visual.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: Where either of you familiar with Drew Daniels, the Texas Twister prior to this recording or prior to my invitation to research this guy?
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I remember when the West Coast of Engels issues came out, I was buying them at the time, and I got heavily back in to call it in to comics when I was in college, and I remember reading those issues that they came out.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't make a real strong impression on the other than I thought it was his costume look really cool, and I'm a sucker for a big bushy mustache.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Says the guy with a big mustache.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, Texas Twister is somebody I've seen in passing, but somebody I can't say I've read too much of, I have seen a lot of him in the initiative era and the Civil War period, and I did remember his fantastic four-ish-you when I was reading that run, so he's somebody where it's like, oh, I've seen you before, but I can't say I know too much, so this was a nice little deep dive into the character and getting familiar with him, and he's actually a lot of fun.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: When I saw him, he kind of reminds me of
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: And he kind of came off as no nonsense and knows his worth, which I can appreciate.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: Forvupack, it was caused playing as the Texas Twister would be so fucking hot.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: You could pull off a tester, Texas Twister look as well.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: It would not be a huge challenge.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we got we got to have a little mustache die or a fake mustache in it.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I get a good cowboy shirt.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now again, I growing up, you know, I wasn't like raised on a ranch or like on a dairy farm or anything like that, but there's a lot of western stuff connected to my family my grandparents were sheep and potato farmers in Idaho for example, so lots of horses my dad grew up on it on a farm.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: My mom grew up near a farm, so those are really close to me, but there's a ton of Mormon mythology in the middle of all this.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: When I was researching this topic, realizing how many Broadway musicals I grew up watching that are set in the western theme from paint your wagon to Oklahoma to seven brides for seven brothers.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: It goes on and on.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're kind of obsessed with this era and this idea of cowboys.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: Now, when I was a kid, we would also visit Island Park Idaho, West Yellowstone, and places like Afton, Wyoming, where we would always be these like, these ranglers, singing songs, and riding horses, and we'd have a big feast out by the bananza.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then it was dirty.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: We also had a lot of cowboy stuff, because we grew up very near Branson, Missouri, which is very country western itself.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: So it's interesting to kind of revisit some of these parts of my roots.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: I've never been like a boots in a cowboy hat kind of guy, but this is a fun era to step into.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: And boy, Texas Twister just a cartoon character taken out of the middle of this craziness.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: Hey Cosmic, do you want to describe Texas Twister's look for us?
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: So Texas Twister, as mentioned, kind of has a resemblance to Orville Pack at least for me.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: He's wearing a black eye mask, a cowboy hat.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: He has a thick bushy red mustache.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: So he has red hair as well.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: And he's wearing a full blue like head to toe, Western looking outfit with a belt buckle and cowboy boots.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's like a red and yellow emblem on it.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: It almost looks like the raw had right right hand kids.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: But there's just, yes, he's just using
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: He's over a tornado design that's like right in the middle of his belt buckle as well plus his cowboy hat's white, which always tells you he's a good guy, right?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have that noted here, his appearance is very reminiscent of Rawhide Kids Look and immediately I think of that homo erotic look in cover where he's like blowing on the pistol.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: I like that sort of like western style shirt where it like buttons across the top and down and then having the stripes in the middle of it was very, very functional wardrobe
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: almost more than as much as the superhero costume.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't do like the the Trunks and tights look at this.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to delve into this man's cool powers, his weird relationships, his very stupid history, and then his very determined personality.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: This guy has a wild history.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Marvel Comics in the 80s did some fun shit with their characters, and we're going to get into it all today.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: Let's jump into the world of fantastic 4177, where this character first appears.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's December 1976, which sets us right in the era.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: We're going on my show.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Roy Thomas is the writer, Mike Friedrich, and George Perez are here.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: The frightful four are down to three members, the wizard, the sandman, and the trapster.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: At a fucking level, three of these weirdos.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they first capture Franklin Richards and then Alicia Masters, but then all four of the fantastic four are captured as well because they want them to watch their new tryouts for a fourth member of their villain team, which is just giving very skeletal or from he man, like, wow, watch me as I
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: recruit bad guys.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: They take out the very full four take out an ad in the news paper and then villains start showing up to their headquarters one by one.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: Where again, the fantastic four are all just like captured there.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: First up in this issue, we meet a guy named the Osprey who is Oscar Kincaid Jr.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is his one and only appearance.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: He has no powers, he just made himself a suit and the wizard rewards him by putting an anti-gravity discount him and then throwing out the window so he can fly safely to the ground below.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: We presume, rejected, goodbye, Osprey.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like this is a real J-cosmic movie.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, oh, that can be a superhero.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: We've put out some tech clothes and show up at the audition.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_02]: He's like Peter in Deadpool.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, kind of.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_02]: He just saw the tryouts and showed up with his resume and his face shot.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: The next applicant enters and it's a massive rush of wind that disorients the wizard.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: What in the name of heaven was that?
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: And who are you?
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: The answer to both them questions is the same partner.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Folks call me the Texas Twister.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: Least way they will as soon as they've heard of me.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: Just wanted to show y'all I've got real superpowers even if that other armbrae didn't.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: Rick and I have made my point.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: Why you arrogant, carrot topped.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: If you weren't roughly the size of Jollard Wayne.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: And the Sandman says, but he is whiz.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, so you've got a super power.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: How did you get it?
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: It ain't polite to point, Mr.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's better.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, I got my powers real sudden like a few weeks back down in the Panhandle.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: I was riding my coyotes not far from one of them new atomic plants they're building.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: When all of a sudden tornado, well, sir of that twister, getting me clean out of my saddle.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: At the same time, as I hit the plant and all of the new clear stuff inside, I reckon.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: Next thing I know, I could whirl myself right out of that there.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: What I guess you'd call a radioactive tornado?
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: It came east to make my mark and saw your aides, so I reckon I'm all you're and as long as you match the start and salary that another bunch of fellers offered.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: You sandman kicks in here, start and where you dumb hick, you'll get your share of the loot we snatch and that's all.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: In that case, Rick and I'll be mowsing in a long way, who made you an offer?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: Ari fellers, they asked me not to tell.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, little lady, I reckon you're next and he shows in first Thundra and then Captain Altra is there, they're all trying out for the team.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: What a fucking introduction for this guy.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is a wild origin.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: He kind of reminds me of, and this was something that I saw recently, the village people movie count up the music, where they're holding auditions.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: And the other guy shows up looking for a different office because he's got a traffic ticket to pay or something.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: and he just like stumbled into the wrong place and then Bell swan out and then it's like that wasn't I don't know if he was really focused on what they were doing or if he was just kind of testing the waters bit I mean it's a very 70s kind of here's someone that shows up and and does their bit and then just ambles off
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: So, Rogue and Gambit have historically, I mean Canon Ball 2 have historically like very thick accents written into their comics.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: Canon Ball, oh, you know, monoramic tagger, wolves bathe, we get characters where we get those like written out things.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Canon Ball and Rogue being the two southern ones in the X-Men, Texas Twisters dialogue is written so, so obnoxiously in that first appearance.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you guys saw Kristen Wig as Pauladine in SNL several years ago, where she'd be like, oh, yes.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's how Texas twisters accent reads to me almost.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: Very sandy the squirrel from SpongeBob.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Hearing his origins was just kind of amusing like radiation and tornado.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_02]: Why not if it's a variation of the spider-man origin where he was born.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_01]: But it does show his characterization that we see later on about him being very no nonsense and again knowing his worth and just you know he came.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: He made an impression.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: He left and showed he was quite the character.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: I really enjoy how these supervillains just like take this origin story and stride.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: But then you got to remember Sandman's on the team and this is kind of Sandman's same origin.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: He got infected by like radioactive sand or whatever.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: But uh, Texas Twister and Sandman had they been teammates could have had a really cool like Sandstorm Power combo move.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying, oh yeah.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: He was a derrude.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: So it could really jump over to the next appearance Captain America 2017.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Worcester referenced that someone had made him a better offer, turns out it was shield.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: Captain America and the Falcon meet a new team of superheroes being trained by shield.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: One of them is blue streak.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this guy looks like he is a disco dancer on roller skates with an open shirt.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: that you for sure saw this man in a gay club in 1977.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: And that's all I'm saying.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: We have the vivacious vamp who is just a real slutty woman who's got some real weird origins.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get to in a Deadpool comic another time.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: And then we've got the Texas Twister.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: And he's there and trot things out.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's reminded Nick Fury that he also has other options out there.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: If you want the Texas Twister to show these fancy paints, Eastern dudes, how we brawl down south, I'd be happy to oblige the Falcon replies.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think hop along Cassidy here.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: Just challenge us to a fight and a tear you want to give us Captain America Oh, I don't have the option.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, those are good.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Then let's get it over with fast before we whip sat as guitar and sings us back in the saddle again In response
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister just knocks them over with hurricane force winds, and then the fourth member of the team shows up the super agents of shield and it's Marvel boy.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: This is Wendell Vaughn, the future quasar, wearing those little slutty shorts from the 1950s, taken from another character.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: The team spars against cap for training.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: We get to see Texas Twister say,
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: Funderation!
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Why can't those three out?
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: Who'd stop one man?
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: Guess the final showdown's gonna be between this costume Yankee and the Texas Twister and in the end he decides to stay with the shield Asians.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: We got ourselves some training to do.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, are we fond of this guy yet?
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: How are we feeling?
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: He amuses me, honestly, um, he was, again, very no nonsense and very, I know I'm going to use that phrase a lot throughout this episode, but for a no nonsense very much like, let, let you prove yourself to me and then, or prove his worthiness for him to be on the team and, I don't know, he's just a lot of fun so far.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_02]: He's not necessarily trying to win them over, he's trying to get them to win him over.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he thinks so he knows this worth and he like is like here's what I got to offer you going to be what I'm worth, but he's just ready for adventure, you know, he's given like that to guy that and you guys see the midnight cowboy that old I have not no okay, so there's this like gay man from like Texas and his cowboy hat who goes up to the city to like make it and he ends up.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: in some gay prostitution stuff.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's a whole, it's like one of the best pictures of Hollywood that year.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a week.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth a week.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth a
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: it's a it's a jarring film for the time it was made in yeah okay we're going to jump back over to fantastic for this is a really touching story oddly in issue 192 the title is he who seweth the wind it's 1978 this is by Len Ween Roger slipper George Perez on the cover we see a full tornado enveloping the human torch picking up cars and women
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: Johnny Storm is visiting the Kiwazi reservation that is the home town of his best friend White Wingfoot and he's just being a big old show off.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a bunch of Native American or Indigenous characters and Johnny's being real weird and there's a man in disguise watching.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Here's his thoughts.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: While that was right, nicely, a Mr. Storm to put on a show for them there, Youngens.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, take nothing like the spectacle they're going to see tomorrow.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sir, we, they're going to be treated to a mighty fine showdown for you end up face down in the desert.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: So Johnny is there to enter a cross-country race and he assumes me the gorgeous native character Rebecca Rainbow, who I would love to see more of actually, I think she's fucking great.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: And Johnny insults her by calling her polka harness and fuck you Johnny storm very much for that move, but mostly you fuck you Len Ween for writing that line.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: So, Texas Twister is staying at the Golden Shoe Hotel and he checks in with his employer while he smokes a cigarette and they hang up on him and he refers to them as damn impolite Yankees.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we're going to learn he's been hired to test out the human torches powers.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: Really truly, it has never been revealed in a comic book who hired them.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: This is one of those weird Marvel mysteries that's never been cleared up.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: I even ran it past the handbook guys and they're like, yep, this one has never been answered.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't know who it was.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: So the next day when the race starts, a tornado hits the track and it sucks all the cars up, and it nearly kills Rainbow.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, partner Hank say we've ever been formally introduced, but could you ever forget the Texas Twister?
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, I'm back and I'm a gun and fur yet torch.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: Head of Texas tornado sends little mini tornadoes out of his hands.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: and swirls the winds around him to create sandstorms and Johnny's using super heat to blast the tornadoes apart because he listened that one time where he'd give a science lesson about heat and tornadoes like this.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: You're a pretty quick young fellow.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Can't you get it through your stubborn hide and hide H-A-I-D?
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I'm talking like the accident gets wrong.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't need to be close to you to beat you, and he soon learns, by the way, to you to beat you, like all those words and to me.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, and he lures Johnny in and socks him right in the jaw to knock him unconscious, but Rainbow and Wyatt explode a car nearby to distract him.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: and this turns the tides on Texas Twister long enough for Johnny to recover.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: I guess I'll take a tip from all Robert E. Lee.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oops, that's not a reference we needed to even he knew when to stop fatten, you're a mighty fine fighter, young failure, and then he whirls away.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: So we get to power upgrades, we get many tornadoes, we get sandstorms, is the parenthesis or kind of like kind of like tornadoes in the they they they come in kind of quick and they shake things up and then they're off and gone.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: Jay Cosmic, I don't know if you have ever read this super agents of shield arc from Captain American to 28 but uh lead us in this direction my friend, this is a wildly fun story.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: You got me doing my homework.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: Captain America is one of the few series I haven't read, but anytime I am on here, there are Captain America issues, and it's like, why haven't I read this?
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, you got me doing my homework and got me interested, especially the end of this story arc.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: So, the Captain America story arc is 2221.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, 228 starts with Captain America stirring out the window in the rain, brooding, and Iron Man notices he's deep in thought as Steve Rogers is, um,
- 21:30[SPEAKER_01]: I guess reflecting on his encounters with Corvac, Red Skull, and just existential overall.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: He goes to a secret shield base located within a barber shop after saving a child from being hit by a truck and is attacked by a defense robot taking it out with ease.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: The bases end
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: to his surprise before, sit well comes on the screen warning him the place is coming down due to his security breach.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: Cap is trying to locate the Falcon who is missing and is connected to the Super Agents, where you can see Texas twister in the background, so he doesn't actually have any speaking parts in this issue.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: After his call with the Super Agents, Cap is attacked by
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think to do with our story, but there's an interaction and cap to 28.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're capsid Avengers mansion and there's some funny things going on with the team.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like they're behind the scenes stuff.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: Like a hercules and Thor are arm wrestling.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: It just like to pass the time and beast.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, it's just being really horny.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: He comes running through throws off his text, his trench coat and then slides the down the banister to the foyer below where he puts on a coat and grab some flowers out of the vases he's running off for a date and Captain America says
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hank, is there some sort of trouble?
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: Do you need any help?
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: Not me, Kathy.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: I have everything under control.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: Except my libido, of course.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if I should have shaved.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: No, darling, a door is hairy, man.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: And brother, that's me all over.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: Don't bother waiting up for me, folks.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: With any luck, I won't be back to home morning.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_00]: Tuesday, morning.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, I know today's Thursday, but what the hey?
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, this man's so much.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's gonna be a little common for me, but let's face it.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's meeting, wonder man.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: Let's be honest here.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Wonder man's dress somewhere and going by the name Darlene.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's waiting in a bar.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's a pretty dress on.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's his drag name.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, they're heated rivalry text names that they're using so that nobody knows who they're really talking.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: She likes a hairy man and boy, that's me all over.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: Don't wait up friends.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, he's so much.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, 229, let's go.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_01]: After the secret base collapses, shield agents are searching the rubble and capped in America emerges from the rubble with an unconscious constrictor, where capped then ties constrictor to a lamp post and interrogates about the corporation who he believes is responsible for Falcons' disappearance.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: Cap stops by the Avengers mansion for some traveling money and takes a bus to Shields Los Angeles base.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Captain America confronts the shield's super agents to flush out the traitor among their ranks.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: So, Cap, one of you is a spy for the corporation and I can prove it.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then Texas tornado.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Thuneration, the Texas Twister is as honest as the day is long, pardon me.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I neglected that weird.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, that was excellent.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: So Blue Street attacks, um, Captain America first saying they're being tested.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: You reckon Blue Street's right?
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds kind of fishy to me.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: Capitakes out Blue Street before Texas, Twister, hits him with a cyclone, although Cap throws his shield as feet and knocks him over.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: Vamp then attacks Cap before she is subdued.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: Windle Vaughn,
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: flies at cap but gets a face full of shield.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: So blue streak tries to flee, revealing himself as the trader.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: Vamp is upset and beats on him, and Texas Twister has it and quits the team.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: Ha, that ain't the half of it, lady.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: You're plumb logo.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: Fact is you're all logo.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: bars, I'm concerned, shield content could so-called super agents and shove them.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: I've had it officially.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_00]: This is so much, on the cover of 229, we get a really cool image of the Texas Twister, like firing a whole concentric tornado out of his arm, which is really cool.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then I'm gonna take you back to the hijinks of beast.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: We come back to the mansion the next day.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: Thor and Hercules are still arm wrestling, and Jarvis checks on the beast who is nursing a headache.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, what a gal, what a night, what a hangover.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then cap needs some help.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: So Beast runs upstairs, breaks open his piggy bank, which looks like a gorilla and can only find $4.75 in it.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: So he spent it all on his date.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: These Beast hijinks of these issues were so great.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, Chexus Twister doesn't necessarily appear in 230, but he does appear in 231 in a flashback.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: So, 230 cap goes to Alcatraz with the remaining Super Agents, so Vamp, Wendell Vaughn, and Bruce Banner and his friend Fred Sloan are kimmed out by the corporation and taken to Alcatraz as well.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, cap and the remaining Super Agents infiltrate the base and find Falcon where he has changed to the Seagates.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: The corporations manager Curtis Jackson, not to be confused with 50 cents, explains Falcon and Banner are being used as bait for Falcon's nephew Jim Wilson, a former associate, Kleeger, a rival corporation, executive appears with Moonstone and their captive Jim Wilson.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: Kleeger proposes a trade of Jim for Cap and Vampir Bielzerself as Kleeger's operative.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_02]: More betrayal.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: Tap in Marvel Man, fight back, or he has Marvel Man as in Wonderland.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: Banner turns into the Hulk and joins the melee.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: The confused Hulk dispatches Cap in Marvel Man, Plager turns Vamp into the monstrous enemies to help moonstone defeat the Hulk.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: With the heroes unconscious, Jackson opens the sea gates and water rushes into the chamber.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: The cover of the issue does also have cap shielding himself behind the shield with Hulk's fist punching the shield, which looks pretty cool as well.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: There's a there's not a lot of subtlety in Marvel 70's comics.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: The evil villain group is just called the corporation.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a group of white men businessmen and senators running things from behind the scenes.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: Very, very on the nose in a lot of ways.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: The vamp gets turned into this creature called the animus, which is just this ugly little pink brain monster inside the body of this like really gorgeous woman.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: Jo Kelly later writes this character into his dead pool run.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: This is a fun little run of comics.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot going on with the powerbroker and the corporation but a lot of fun.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: So seeing moonstone pop-in was actually interesting too, especially like the Bob was bobbing halfway through, like after the little car crash at the start.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's an interesting image, but getting to 231.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: The cover feels very chilling and is the stark reminder of the times we're living in now.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: So the cover for those who don't see it is a crowd of people and this villain called the great director doing a Nazi salute in front of a burning cross in front of Cap and it's titled if America should die, which
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: Again, any time I've come across a Captain America issue, it's like, there's a lot of modern stuff that's covered in the 70s issues, so to see a lot of that relevant again, it's just a little chilling and you know, it's amazing to see how much of it has gone over people's heads, you know.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody take a moment, look at Captain 31, it's literally a group of white supremacists in front of a burning cross.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: with their arms to the higher hitler sign as cap watches.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's uncomfortable.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: But yes, let's move on.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but basically, 231, the first half of the issue is a bit of a flashback of the events that have happened in the last few issues.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, cap returns to New York and tries to seek out Falcon and Harlem.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: He does not find Falcon, but he does find Peggy Carter and Peggy recounts how Sharon Carter and a few other shield agents were trying to gather information on the new Grand Director and his national force.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: Since Cap left the city, the mysterious Grand Director, brought his hypnotic platform of hatred and racism and violence to New York City.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Peggy recalls how during a rally in Central Park, the Grand Director seems to incite the people into a murderous frenzy,
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: and him on social media now, all in the name of America, by the way, now Sharon is missing and the national force appears to be on the rise.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: Captain America declares that defeat of that the defeat of the organization is something he is going to take personally and plans to find Sharon.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: The issue ends with Peggy Carter being shot at by the Grand Director's henchmen and her car exploding.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: The next issue titled Holocaust in Harlem.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I'm going to give you the history here that you don't know.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: Captain America comics were produced well into the 1950s and there's a run in the 50s called Kami Smasher Captain America where Captain Bucky it looks like the same character from the war are being super racist awful anti communist assholes.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: Then when Avengers comes around, they give the retcon that Captain America has been frozen in the iceberg for all these years.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: So a later writer is like, hmm, those characters, the comedy smashers must have been different characters in the 1950s.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a guy that got plastic surgery to look like Steve Rogers, basically, and he's kind of insane.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: They bring him back in a few comic books.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: And this guy that's running the national force that is the man behind the Ku Klux Kleng group here is the 50s Captain America.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: as the grand director, not the grand wizard, that's what they call them, he cooks plan, but he's in an all-white uniform with a red mask, and excuse me, a white mask, and a red, emblazoned swastika on his arm.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the 1950s, Kami Smasher, McCarthyism Captain America, that's behind the hood.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_00]: Really crazy story to it, it's wild.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: It was interesting, actually, reading about this character, because again, like,
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: Captain America's run, I will admit it's something I haven't dived into deeply, but learning about these characters and seeing the modern implications.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of like, I really need to go back into a deep dive.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's worthy of a journey.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: I've taken you on a few folks for listeners of my show.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: That little bit of history repeating itself is like, as you're describing is the big rally.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I can hear that I just blanked on the guy's name that that's leading the rally saying.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to go to the Capitol and
- 31:05[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, wait a second, we, we, yeah, the national force to feel too far away these days gross.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: Back to my fascism conversations on my show, which had been running as a theme for a little while.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: They were very seated in our comics.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so Texas Twister has a little bit of an established history.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: Cosmic, I knew you'd like that run because Moonstone was there.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_00]: And a hot lady turns into a creepy little pink monster.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought,
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm with those goings.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: The Rangers are this new group of superheroes.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about their formation in just a second.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: They show up very briefly in contest of champions one and three.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: They're listed.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: But then we also see them in the Hulk's parade in 279.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: But Terry's going to tell us about the formation of the team, the Rangers in incredible Hulk 265.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is a blast.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: That was a wild one.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: Basically the Hulk's being manipulated by the controller.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's a little shitty mine control guy.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's really, yeah, it's in day.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: This guy's a just love, but he's a cut.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: I hate that picture.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's controlling the Hulk to be his rage monster and try to draw the other heroes into to take control of them too.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_02]: And Rick Jones is there being used as the Hulk's friend to signal the Avengers and call them in.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: But the signal doesn't quite reach the Avengers, but it picks up a few other random heroes through the
- 32:27[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a direct reflection on Avengers number one, where Rick and the Teen Brigade send out a message, Loki's Grambles is in it forms the Avengers.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: Rick agrees to send the radio signal out.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: After saying to the Blue Skin Corruptor, all right, Blueberry Puss, I've done your dirty deed.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: Dialogue is crazy in this issue.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, okay, so he sends a signal out and after an indeterminate amount of time the controller is getting angry because the vendors haven't shown up and he thinks that he did that Rick did something wrong or different, but then suddenly other heroes start showing up that we get the
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: we get a firebird and we get.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: So we got William Taltreys, the Red Wolf, the Red Wolf, Native or an indigenous character from Arizona.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_00]: We have Benita Quarrez, who is a Catholic social worker, the firebird of the West Coast Avengers, of the love of this character, from one of this new Mexico.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: And then we find the move to Texas Twister and his new girl,
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: who as you were talking about his previous interest that turned into out to be this this like secret alien thing.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, oh, he's got a type.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, they all show up kind of independently of each other.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: But it's like, well, we're all here.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_02]: We're all heroes.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: Let's do our hero thing.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: And oh, and Knight Rider or Knight Rider, who was kind of go
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: So Red Wolf is Red Wolf is caught in intersectionality.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_00]: Red Wolf is a character who has like ties to both the white world and the native world in which one will each choose.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: And he's a veteran.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: I talk about this guy a little bit in my about John Proud.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: Start episode from last year for those that heard the larger academic panel.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: Benito Whereas is a Catholic character who firebirds a great character, but she's a wild conversation.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I've mentioned her even once on my show before.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: Then the other member of this team that rounds it out is Knight Rider, and I'll give the very quick origin here.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is a 50s comic.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: You guys know the old song, Ghost Riders in the sky.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like country songs.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's a piece of the old folk tale.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_00]: And there's an old comic book called The Ghost Rider, where they introduce this character who gets brought in by some Native Americans basically, and they give him like their special stars that fell to Earth because the gods called the native, this white man to be their chosen one, which is already crazy.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: He rubs the stardust all over his clothes and horse in terms everything like glowy glowy white.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that character was kept by Marvel, and they later got the name Ghost Rider back.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a public domain character that's associated with this name, but then Marvel later brought him in as a different character later on, okay?
- 35:12[SPEAKER_00]: Then they later changed his name to the Knight Rider.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: This is a man in all white writing on a white horse using the name night writer and everyone that is the name of what the leaders of the patrolling parties of the Ku Klux clan were we have a white man in native mythology on a white horse called the night writer on this team.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_02]: it's almost like wait now are these heroes or villains are they because they could go either way a lot of them but yeah so they all kind of show up independently of each other and or kind of fighting the bad guy and each other or any other's way and it's
- 35:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's not a great introduction for a lot of them, but they do manage to get the whole settled down.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: And one day I noticed reading it is that they're like, did this like long-exposition recap at the beginning, and then about like halfway or two-thirds of the way through the comic, they kind of recap it again, in case you forgot what was happening.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: and there's a lot of it.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: At the end, they decide to stick together.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: They're the Rangers.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we did okay on our own.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_02]: Let's be our own team.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's the friends.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's the friends they may along the way.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's right.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's a
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: The cover shows the sexist twister inside a tornado, like almost like it's made of metal, as he swirls it around him.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's a pretty cool visual for this character.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then we got to talk for a minute about the introduction of the shooting star.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: We're in the late night rodeo outside of Pasadena, California.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_00]: This shows how two top build attractions have held the audience to the last.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: We see the shooting star with
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: If those Matt wins Texas Twister, that's my job, you'd star, and here's where we get his real name for the first time.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: Drew Daniels and Victoria Star are two performers with very special powers, the Rooms lap up his ability to twirl like a tornado, and her stellar marksmanship.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_00]: She does not have powers by the way, she's just good with a gun.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: However, being ambitious, the pair is less than pleased when the direction their career with the direction the careers have taken,
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: So far, allows me $1000, she says, we draw five times the crowd this show got before we can hear Cody.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: You saw on the contracts, kids, and I'm holding you to him.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: But fate casting its net far and wide this evening is just in snare textist twister and shooting star.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: Star, listen to this.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's when they hear the ad on the radio.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: So here's where we shake the dust on this one horse rodeo darlin and make a name for ourselves as genuine Superheroes by showing up to save the day before the Avengers If we pull this off, why would the rat promotion Texas Twister and shoot and star can wind up making themselves a mint?
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: Jay Cosmic, do you want to tell us about shooting stars costume?
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: So shooting stars costume, kind of resembles Miss America.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: If you're our familiar with that character, but it's a full body blue outfit with red cowboy boots, red flaired gloves.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_01]: There's white trim at the top of the boots and the top of the gloves.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: And she has a red belt with a red holster and a white star, a five point star on the front of her chest.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: And she has lung blonde hair.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: This feels like if you guys watch the boys, this feels like one of those prop again to ads by Vaught to like promote like homelander.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, are you guys fond of the shooting star?
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: She's she's a poor man's mockingbird.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: She kind of gives firecracker energy a little bit, but in a less pick me kind of way.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's kind of like like generic cowboy female hero, it kind of I can see her and twist her kind of heartening back to like the old the like Annie Oakley and um yeah, well the hickok those kind of rodeo shows or shooting shows that they used to do back then it's kind of like a callback to those kind of entertainment and the fact that it's not as popular or paying as well in the modern times um it kind of
- 39:13[SPEAKER_02]: bring back or hold up that old tradition that most a lot of people have already forgotten and and aren't that that excited about.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we we get a really cool page two with like a five pointed sheriff star in the middle and each point separates the borders as the five heroes are all driving in.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: We've got Red Wolf and Lobo in a bureau of Indian Affairs Green Jeep, firebird flying, Texas Twister in his tornado, he's also making shooting starfly, and then the night rider.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: It says, thus, from different corners of the Great American Southwest, five beings possess of superhuman powers and abilities, come together to answer a desperate appeal for aid, not as individuals, but as the Rangers, Texas Twister also calls Red Wolf Red's skin
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: But this is a really fun fucking comic.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: I really enjoy this particular issue.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: It was interesting that this was Firebirds first appearance looking into this as well.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_01]: In addition to the Rangers.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's a spot where Texas Twister saves Red Wolf from falling.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: He goes easy red skin.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: The tornado wins a Texas Twister coming to your rescue and Red Wolf says we are saved
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yes, I'll definitely have the time, but He also refers to firebird in his thoughts as that Mexican firebird has been not senseless of just wow, buddy.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_02]: No, and I remember at one point one of them I think it might have been Lobo in his first encounter, or first as someone as a Gringo, and then there's like a little editor of footnote and explaining that the Gringo's a Mexican slang for a white person or something like that.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: The shooting star is really overwhelmed by the fact that they're fighting the Hulk, but she does shoot him.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she also calls the Red Wolf and Indian.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, she calls her done shooting stars.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: And they have a little like dazzler light effect.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: So like light with stars comes out of them like QPP.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_00]: You want to assume again, it's a little firecracker energy.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_00]: She does some flips and there's a point where she lands on the back of the Knight Rider's horse And it looks like she's flirting because she tells the Knight Rider that he has moxie and she likes moxie and then the Texas Twister thinks stars flirting with that spook
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, spook meaning ghost.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the racial slayer.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not the racial slayer.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: This is a white man, but still blasted Philly, nope.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: If taking on the Hulk is what's impressive or the Texas, Twister will talk a tackle that walk in green garbage truck tornado style.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: So he thinks of his partner as a blasted Philly.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like this man has some antiquated thinking.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: If you're not sure friends, he's from Texas.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_01]: It was a lot of fun overall and it's just like Texas really has a nickname for everybody that's not age 12, but
- 42:09[SPEAKER_02]: It was a simpler time.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, for white people.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't even be one of those Southern people who are like indirectly rude, where it's like, bless your heart, even though it's like, you know, yeah, you know, you only show their bless your heart is a, is a, I guess that's how our shooting star then, um, Texas.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm for, I'm forgiving as long as you didn't know better, but the second he knows better, you got to fucking change your ways, buddy.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, now I'm seeing, I mean, this is where I really started in on with the Texas Wester part of the story and
- 42:50[SPEAKER_02]: From this, and from the parts that Jay was talking about, Texas Twisters is kind of a two-note character, not a one-note character.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, he wants to be a big famous star and hero.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_02]: And so he keeps like showing up to try to join the team and beat, but they got to treat him like the hero he is in his mind.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_02]: And he's also like obsessed with the women in his life.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_02]: And the first one didn't end well.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_02]: Spoilers, we'll see what happens.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, okay, let's talk over to West Coast Avengers number eight.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: This one's crazy.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_02]: I remember from when the original issues came out too, as I'm reading his there's like, oh, this is where that master pandemonium kind of comes in and it fleeting up to him.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he showed down with the Avengers.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_00]: So we get it.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: We get a team versus team line up on the cover.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_00]: This is when the thing is on the Avengers.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: So Texas Twisters, like, all raised up above his team, Knight writers kind of in the main focus here.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: This is a really fun comic book, opening with a story called a bird in the hand.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the ranges group is like coming in and getting kind of scoring off with the Avengers, the fire lady, firebird, firebird.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: She's like with the Avengers and she's going back and forth.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I wanted to join, but I'm not sure if I should join.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: And, and I'll, all my very Catholic stuff is answered involved.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_02]: And, okay, it's all like, come on, thank you, join the team.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_02]: Come on, thank you in the team.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_02]: And so the other kind of show up and she's like, oh,
- 44:18[SPEAKER_02]: what's going on with all this.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's kind of a reunion, but it's kind of there's a lot of fun superhero smash ups.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: One of the running gags in this series is the Hawkeye can never get a sixth member of the team and he needs at least six.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of reliance moments.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: They're on the they're like hanging out by the pool when the Rangers first land, Texas twisters making their like pool furniture fly everywhere.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: But he's flying the team around even even night writer like on his horse.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: He starts going into the Phantom writer here,
- 44:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and we learn that someone has been possessed.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and they got to figure out who it is and who's influencing the others.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_00]: The Rangers are here to find Firebird, who's come to the team.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: And right, they like she has to come back with us.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: But Firebird senses when shooting star touches her, that shooting star has been possessed.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: Mother of Day deals, she's possessed.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the little lady don't want to work it out no more Avengers.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: She's again to come back with us and get it with back get back with her friends.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right, honey You touched me.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: She says so you think I got two days or something It's like she can she can sense there's evil, but I can't kind of exactly where and I was getting very much a
- 45:29[SPEAKER_02]: counselor Troy in the first season of the start of the generation is like, I sense great evil.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_02]: And she's right.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_00]: They are possessed by demons.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's a real step.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a superhero battle.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister attacks the thing with some tornadoes.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody can stand up to my tornadoes and the things as foodie.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: You call this windy.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: You should hear Hawkeye's membership pitches.
- 45:49[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: another excellent read.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: The thing tries to destroy the Texas Twisters tornado with some lawn furniture and it just breaks to pieces.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_00]: Shooting star of course gets to battle mockingbird who wins and then we get the wolf getting demonically possessed and like turning into a big old ugly monster.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_00]: Firebird's able to shoot a giant massive like fireflame into the air which
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: and they realized that only one of them has been possessed.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's shooting star.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_00]: She's been controlling the other thing.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_00]: So if you didn't know you needed some possessed rangers.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_00]: So firebird grabs shooting star and it forces her to expose her true nature.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sorry, do you want to describe this little folly demon.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_02]: So suddenly she stopped looking like a pretty blonde lady and she becomes this this scaly green monstrous looking demon and with still with the blonde hair, but that's the costume.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_02]: He's just hideous, he's so ugly.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_00]: she says, where's the real demon?
- 46:54[SPEAKER_00]: I am the real demon fire bird.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: I always have been.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was in the guys that that woman that I chose to walk among men, but when we met, I knew you'd see through me in no time if we stayed together.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I made sure we never form no team.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: When you called us all up, though, I figured I was better off killing you.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: It was simple taking over the others.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like, so this demons trying to hide in plain sight and has now been exposed.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: And everyone is obviously very upset.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_00]: This is a wild choice.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: For sure, it was a little green demon lady the whole time.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the whole time, the whole time.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Drew's like, oh my god, did I fuck that?
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, yeah, this demon's name is Reglevio.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_00]: And when we open West Coast Avengers number nine, we open up on the shooting star on the run.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: The title of this issue is Hot Persuits.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, she's like running through the alleyways.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_02]: She's apparently is escaped from the Avengers and she's trying to get back to the headquarters of the whoever sent her into to disrupt all that.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: She gets in there and through the thought balloons and stuff, we learn that it's actually, it's mockingbird disguised as her, the Avengers or what's because Avengers are on her trail and they're following her through and she manages to get into the headquarters and where Mr.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_02]: Pandemonium is waiting to, I guess, do whatever it is he's doing.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_02]: His motivation seemed kind of fuzzy.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: He's looking for demons because his soul is
- 48:27[SPEAKER_00]: missing, and if he finds that right, then the hole in his chest.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm back together.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_00]: I have a master pun to money episode out there with Alex Sagar, everyone.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: He brings shooting star down into like his basement.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: She gets some fun thoughts.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: She's back in her human form here, you know, just keep
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: She holds up an ambulance because that's one of them omelette, huh?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's the ambulance, the omnipotent.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's the omnipotent.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: He holds out the amulette of Asmodius, and we get a little bit more of his origin story here.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_00]: So shooting star comes through, and she's waiting for the Avengers to show up so that they can expose this crazy man.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: They eventually show up.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_00]: There's a giant fight.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twisters here, he gets involved, and he seems like very overwhelmed by all of this at this point.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: we're now battling demons and cat people, and you know, mockingbird gets a cool moment.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: And in the end of this, the rangers go off on their own.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_01]: Poor shooting star just can't catch a break.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: She's either getting possessed or getting captured or just I wouldn't call her a damsel in distress, but she just keeps getting in situations.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: The revealed of the blonde on the team is possessed by a demon is just crazy.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: she just a lot of um at least this era of Texas twister stories just seemed to center around shouldn't star just getting in some sort of trouble and Texas twister kind of again not like a damsel of distress kind of way but like just kind of wanting to wanting to rescue her you know so
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: At this point, we're going to jump to West Coast Avengers number 31.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: Now, in between the West Coast Avengers have their epic time travel story where they end up in the Old Rama Tutt times and in the Old West Times.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the epic story line where a mockingbird gets drugged.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: and sexually assaulted by the Phantom writer.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then later in the present, she chooses to let the character, the villain, fall to his death.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: And Hawkeye and her start having marriage problems because like the man that assaulted her, she let him die.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: This is a very crazy story for an 80s book at Marvel.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: So now the ghost of the Phantom writer is back and wants revenge and is teaming up with the Texas Twister.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's well because that that jump in the issues.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's like there's a lot of like Exposition about why why she's feeling the way she's feeling and what they're doing and
- 50:49[SPEAKER_02]: And then Tigre has got her own thing where she's been through something and now she's back, but now she has to kill somebody and she can't let the others know she's going to do that and and mockingbirds like I already did kill someone or I passively let someone die and it's like there's this recurring theme of, um,
- 51:08[SPEAKER_02]: heroes trying to decide if they can, if they're still heroes or if where that line is.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_00]: Phenomen Rider and Texas Twister like do a little bit of magic so that they can get some of bite the Avengers for them and outpops fucking arc on.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: Go to the bar fair.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: It shows up and a mockingbird gets to confront her rapist.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's ready to let her fault or her death in this story.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_00]: So she's really going through it in this, uh, drill only plays a small part in this story.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, he still seems, yeah, like he's still not completely processed that what happened with his with his last girlfriend and and so he's like he seems kind of to me he seemed kind of like unfocused or distracted or not really not really it that's top of his game while they're coming in and not real clear on on why they're coming in to fight the Avengers and
- 51:58[SPEAKER_00]: Let's jump over to solo Avengers 18.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: This is a book where every issue has two heroes getting a short story.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: There's some wildly fun comics in this era.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_00]: I love this book.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_00]: We get shirtless Hawkeye practicing archery outside.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like, when the Texas Twister shows up in full tour data form Terry tells about this story.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: Because remember that time shooting star got possessed by a demon everybody?
- 52:21[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: So he shows up and he's all been like obsessing on that and like not sleeping and he's like got to find some way to to save her from the demon or drive.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, uh, he goes, I'm unable to get much shut.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_00]: I since that day that I saw shooting star turning to a demon just thinking about their filthy excuse me about my star and the hands of some filthy demons.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: march right up to the gates of Hades to do it.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I want my girlfriend back.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I want my girlfriend back.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's kind of like never mind being a big fan of the superhero.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_02]: I just want my girlfriend back.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: And and how guys like, oh, okay, once they like calm down the fighting and stuff.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_02]: And thank you.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_02]: talk is okay.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_02]: This guy is, this guy needs a nap, but let's see what the apparently just happened to have for down in the, down in the, in the cells down below.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's why he showed up because the Avengers apparently kept this demon in their little jail and their basement for several weeks at this point.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, fucking, let me go down there.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: I will fight you if you don't.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: He isn't ready to attack Hawkeye fully.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_00]: And they agreed to let him go question this little demon.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_00]: The deep is in this little circular cage with iron bars still wearing kind of a facemely of shooting stars costume.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is a toilet-to-scaly green head and yeah and Texas Twisters like I need to get inside the cage to see her face to face and Hawkeye gets this better judgment.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_00]: Let's admit and draws his bow and arrow and then things get crazy.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_02]: Poster basically is like trying to negotiate to let my girlfriend free stop possessing her.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_02]: You can possess me instead.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so the the Texas Twister fully grabs this little demon that's shorter than him around.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's very much like I love you, right?
- 54:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's like wrapping their face to face.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: Don't fret none.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_00]: I just have to talk to you for a spell.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then it'll all be over.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_00]: I can't stop now.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_00]: I have to tell you how I feel, how I've always failed.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: Then it'll all be over.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: And the demon's like, oh, or let go.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing to me?
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: what I'm trying to say is that I love you and he kisses the demon right on the lips.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, truly disturbing.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_00]: Huck out.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, what the fuck is happening?
- 54:36[SPEAKER_02]: And I got to do this and then it'll all be over.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a recurring line.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_02]: He keeps saying over and over again.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, just let me do this and it'll all be over.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then we find out, you know that I've always loved you.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry for everything I've put you through, forgive me, love me, stop.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_00]: What's happening?
- 54:54[SPEAKER_00]: What do you, I love you, Drew?
- 54:57[SPEAKER_00]: And she turns back into shooting star and faints.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: Hawkeye did it.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_00]: It worked just like I read in the infancy books.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_02]: I got my star by this this is a cute little story.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of a redemption story, you know, in a sort of obsessive stalkery kind of way.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_00]: So let me get the flashback to the rodeo day.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_00]: where we learn the powers of radioactive tornadoes had started to fade and his true love in him shooting star are trying to get them powers back.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: So they make a deal with a demon and Texas Twister says I didn't even realize what the price was.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_00]: I would do anything to keep my powers.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: the demon kept his word.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_00]: I got my powers back.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_00]: Star and me had the best week of my life.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that week with Star was worth anything, and then the demon showed up to collect his price, my soul.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what happened to me, but I pleaded with the demon.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_00]: I begged, take out anybody else.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: Please let it be.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_00]: And the demon is like, okay, well, I'll take Star instead.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_00]: So now we finally have the origin about how shooting Star got possessed of the person.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, thank you.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_00]: Because it turns out there's just a real shitty boyfriend.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I'll do anything.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, not that, but here, take her.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_00]: Take my wife, please.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: Then the demon possesses the Texas Twisters.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: So we end up with green, scaly face scroll, Texas Twister.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_00]: Here I am, foolish, mortal.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: This is the body.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: I should have possessed all alone, not that of the weak woman thing.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_00]: My plan was to use her body as a vessel to get me close to the avenger known as Wonder Man, possessing him.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: I would have been unstoppable by human and demon.
- 56:28[SPEAKER_00]: I like, I was foolish to not to have seen the power.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_00]: This mortal Texas Twister can give me.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_00]: Hawkeye fairs a bolo.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, through the tornado winds and wraps around Titan tingles feed us.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_02]: And suddenly that stops spinning or somehow or If I want to hit it, I really strike out to my reading.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_02]: This is like, How almost every scene of Texas Twister using his powers, he's just like this standing there.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_02]: Because arms out and and everything twisting around him and these last couple of appearances.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, um, and then the way they went over the demon in the end is shooting star says I will kill you.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_00]: Even if I have to kill drew, I'll do it to see you die.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to do it unless you transfer your mind into the inanimate statue of like a union soul right the civil war like.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like a kid.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: So the demon ends up in the race to Statue at the end.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, wow, this story, this crazy crazy Jay Cosmic Bots.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Cosplay Hawkeye idea.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I definitely want to see your shirt looks hot guy get he got the the pants and the little loincloth part and all that and just hot guy from the waist up down and exactly only half the costume to deal with.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_00]: Jay, I know you well enough to know you were reading these comics and then that little green demon showed up and you're like, wow, the fuck.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was definitely something just the visual.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a visual with like kind of the jaggin mouth and Transforming from the jaggin mouth cream creature.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: It almost kind of looks Trump like into this blonde woman.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like okay
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: This is Texas Twister's most like focused story so far.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_00]: We have the audition for the frightful for joining the Super Agents of Shield, the formation of the Rangers.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and then the time he bought the human torch on the reservation.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then he makes a deal with the demon to get his powers.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: So this guy's a little bit of a narcissist, not a great boyfriend, and you know, but he's a hell lot of a fun still.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think shooting star can do better at the end.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then the demons in the confederate solver at the end just nuts.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: You live in Calgary, which is legit the reason I invited you to this issue, because Texas gets a big blow up in a random story called Amazing Spider-Man Chaos in Calgary number one.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_00]: I do not believe you had read this before.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_01]: Not before looking into the, not before this episode.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_01]: No, but I actually learned a little bit about my city reading into this.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: There is stuff where it's like, oh, I did not know this before, but I learned something new considering I'm somebody who's not a fan of stampede personally.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_01]: I learned things about where I live.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_00]: being the rodeo event, everyone.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_00]: We have a cover where Spider-Man is writing a bull, and then it says introducing turbine, Canada's newest supersensation, and is is turbine your newest sensation?
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: No choice but to stand.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_01]: So the issue opens with the Calgary Stampede with the Rangers being introduced to the crowd at the Grandstand rodeo.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_01]: Dr. Cargill is thanking Mr. McKinnon, who I presume is Neil McKinnon, one of the head people from the Stampede.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_01]: Not sure if he's still
- 59:50[SPEAKER_01]: live, but I actually had to look into who Mr. McKinnon was.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_01]: He is a real person, but Dr. Cardinal is thanking Mr. McKinnon for the seats for him and his daughter, Jolene.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: Phantom Rider, whose Marvel legend Diane Box recently, shooting star and Texas tornado are, of course, the members performing at the rodeo.
- 1:00:10[SPEAKER_01]: Shooting, although jumping back to the west coast of
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_01]: having the toy of him.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, but get him back to the issue.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_01]: The Rangers introduced themselves to the crowd.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm shooting star.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_00]: I can say what was I every time using the Electoral Magnetic 6 guns my daddy bought me, which I think is the most origin we've ever had her say about herself.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_01]: Texas Twister.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_01]: The spooky fellow front and center is none other than the Phantom Rider.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_01]: Is he more in ghost than man?
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_01]: Only the Prairie wins no for sure.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm Texas Twister.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_01]: The super spinning and great in Calpoke, then he never been accused of letting dust settle beneath my feet.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_00]: And he's twirling cows around, which just that's so me.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, again, my, some of the reasons I'm not a fan of Stampede is just the treatment of the animals, but we won't get into that too much, well, focus on the comic, but this issue also is full of little Canadian tourism propaganda, full page ads, it's excellent, and then we meet the right writers, little little biking club.
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so Dr. Cargill's daughter, Jolene, wants photos with the writers and Peter Parker's like, yeah, sure, I'll get photos, I'll get you photos with the writers and Jolene is of course excited.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_01]: Peter's thoughts are that the rodeos actually not as exciting as his adventures as spider man, which yeah, I can imagine.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_01]: He says it's certainly one of them.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_01]: Wizard is observing Cargill from afar, hoping Cargill was alone, so he could kidnapped them.
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_01]: We penned back to the event where Texas Twister and shooting star Asci audience split their hands together for the hosts of the event Those two will in fun love it and above all self-conscious kids know the world over the right writers consisting of kids in on bikes and in safety gear Be cool be safe be a wise writer.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_01]: This is a Canadian reference if you grew up in the 90s.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_01]: You'll know it
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_01]: But while performing bike safety, Peter Parker's Spider-Sense goes off to show his interrupted by the frightful fork, consisting of wizard, trapsor, manbull, and dreadnight, and there's a guy that like Dr. Doom glued a mask to his face, and now he's got like a lance and a black horse wild character.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and basically, um, they're here for Dr. Cargill.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_01]: Manbull charges the stance and Peter moves Jolene out of harm's way before Cargill is knocked to the ground.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, a Drennite has Cargill and, um, the four basically are like, Cargill is concerned for Jolene's wellness and the four, like, who cares about her?
- 1:02:42[SPEAKER_01]: The arrangers arrive on scene where Texas Twister deflects trapsters glue with his winds and the frightful force split up and will meet up their rendezvous point.
- 1:02:51[SPEAKER_00]: There is a piece gun fired at this man.
- 1:02:53[SPEAKER_00]: He generates a little mini tornado to splurge the glue all over itself before it can hit him and his girlfriend.
- 1:03:00[SPEAKER_00]: Mm, okay, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:03:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's an interesting visual.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_01]: Um, stick one of these white ones.
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_01]: The sound effects.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_01]: Blatch.
- 1:03:09[UNKNOWN]: She might.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_01]: and being white and color, you know.
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_01]: Peter takes Jolyne to a Cargill's trailer in the parking lot saying he'll alert the authorities about her dad's kidnapping, promised he'll help her find a new father.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: Jolyne insists on helping anyways.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: Trapster has the Rangers trapped in a glue dome, but Phantom Rider and Texas Twister break free.
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_01]: So Texas Twister chases wizard to what is formerly known as the Archie Boys Pavilion, which was then formerly known as the Roundup Center.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_01]: Now known as the BMO Center, where they interrupted dinner show,
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: The audience is oblivious to this being an actual fight, although the wizard does take a Texas Twister with this gravity disc by using it to slam him into the ceiling.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_01]: Shooting star Chase's trapster into the former Olympic saddle dome.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so this is what your bank.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_00]: This man is writing around on a little saucer firing.
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_00]: glue at this woman and the sound effect keeps getting off splatched.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_00]: There's a guy on a chicken costume and a lady ice skating and then shooting star like gets to shoot the disk down but then also gets splatched.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_00]: The sound effect again is splatched.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_00]: Roaps of white stuff wrap all around her and she says, I've been pasted from the side.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god you guys.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, shooting star Chase's trapster into the Olympic Saddle Dome, which is now Scotiabank Saddle Dome, and gets splatched by trapster from the side.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_01]: Dren Knight is hiding among the western display before he is found by Phantom Rider, although Dren Knight takes him out quickly.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_01]: Spider-Man is fighting manbowl, telling him he's taking this stampede to literal.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: Cardgill is knocked out nearby in a days.
- 1:04:45[SPEAKER_01]: Spider-Man creates a weblask, so and writes manbowl, stampede style.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_00]: Is the right rider?
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_01]: it's a lot all of the rangers end up in a glue cage yes so the right writers are nearby observing like oh my god how can we help what can we do before Jolina arrives in a mechanical bike going by the name of turbine where they make her an honorary writer
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_01]: Spider-Man caused his man bull to tumble before the remaining frightful for a ride with Cargill hostage and the Rangers trapped in a glue cage, the right riders arrive on seed where they cause traps to act silly, hit wizard with his glue by dodging, and turbine breaking the Rangers free and knocking Dred Knight off his horse.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_01]: Spider-Man plugs, trepesters glue gun before he detects his twister, combine their powers to create a cocoon of web around the frightful four.
- 1:05:33[SPEAKER_01]: The issue ends with Dr. Cardgilt thanking Spider-Man, the right writers, and the Rangers for saving him, although Turbine is in order to be seen.
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_01]: Spider-Man finds Jolyne back at the trailer and tells her she did great, and her father would be proud of her.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_01]: And next time he's in Calgary, he'd look her up.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_01]: Little do we know, I don't think we ever see him in Calgary again.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_00]: Lord of the Gods.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_00]: This character again.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister in Spider-Man's little power combos great though.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_00]: He like takes the webs and like flops it out to like a tornado to spread it out.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_00]: So it's a net that falls on everyone.
- 1:06:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like a rain, a power combo.
- 1:06:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I'm very much um, there's like a spider that does something similar to that.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, fighter, I could be wrong on that.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_01]: But um, yeah, the issue ends with the bonus Spider-Man story about bank safety.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_00]: This is a wildly fun issue you have to admit.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was a lot of fun considering, again, my feelings about the stampede, um,
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_01]: Showed, countering a good light, even if it was all focused on the stampede grounds.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, sexist wister is not a great character overall, but he, every issue we've read so far has been wildly a good time.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I'm fond of this guy because they're really fun, super hero comics.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Jay, we also tell us about Marvel's superhero's number 15.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this ruined story, everyone.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_01]: This was quite the story if I'm being honest, but it was a lot of fun.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is by Rick Parker, everyone who is, I think, most known Marvel for drawing Bavis in Butthead.
- 1:06:55[SPEAKER_01]: I can see that.
- 1:06:56[SPEAKER_01]: Story starts with Dr. Druid laying on the beach with the name of Dr. Viz head floating above.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_01]: He is laying in a speedo and looks super buff.
- 1:07:03[SPEAKER_01]: Holy sleeper build.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_01]: Texas Twister is seen on the water and appears to have farting noises coming from him.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, brap, perp, that in the most uncomfortable one is the sound effect brish.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's not a sound effect you want back there.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, but Drew, it is thinking about the detectable smell coming from his direction.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_01]: As Texas Twister approached, sure, he comments on Dr. Druid being in really good shape.
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_01]: Howdy, partner!
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_01]: Say, you're in pretty good shape for a man, your age, height, and bail to engage his in moderate, regular exercise.
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_00]: We gotta go back to his first line though, as he's flip-flat, brapping in, he says, YEEE!
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, grab your socks and change your socks.
- 1:07:43[SPEAKER_01]: The Texas Twister just blew in the town blowing is putting it one way But I guess those kind of a back-hamp did compliment so thanks Texas Twister Although he is talking to an illusion conjured up by Druid.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: Let's have stranger.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_01]: You gotta help me
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_01]: You see, my girlfriend's missing, and I'm looking for a doctor Anthony Druid.
- 1:08:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do you see, he's supposed to have some kind of institute of the occult around these parts.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_01]: You see, my gal shouldn't star, while that's not a real name.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_01]: Her real name's Victoria's, saying, you wouldn't happen to be Druid, would you?
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_01]: Druid asks to see his gun and uses his powers to see into his Twister's mind.
- 1:08:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm not thought to Drew, but maybe if you'll rub some of this coconut oil on my back I'll tell you where to find it, which is the gays thing I've ever seen in a Marvel comic for God damn I mean if he wasn't looking for a shooting star like a little beach adventure
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_01]: Also, I have a kitty here.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_01]: Druid asks to see his gut and uses his powers to see into Twister's mind as it's easier than listening to him blabber.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_01]: His words, things were going great and we see it throw back to them at the rodeo show but then she turned cold and he thought maybe it was due to all the beans he was eating with the glorious panel of her face.
- 1:08:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know the close-up I'm talking about.
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's really hilarious.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to describe it, but you sent me a screenshot and I'm just like, okay, my favorite thing ever.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_01]: Just that screenshot out of context alone, but Texas Twister thought maybe it was because of all the traveling they did.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely remember that time the shooting star got possessed by a demon and the plot got fully resolved.
- 1:09:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's like this writer forgot that the plot got resolved.
- 1:09:20[SPEAKER_01]: They did hook up with the Avengers, not in a fun way, only to find out she was an imposter.
- 1:09:25[SPEAKER_01]: He was hoping to relocate the real shooting star as she also had the keys to his truck and offered Drew and two tickets to the rodeo.
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_01]: Drew had agreed to help but told Texas Twister to stay back and help himself to some coconut oil.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_01]: Drew had returned to his beef to so-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to-to
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_00]: Marvel loves the fucking acronym.
- 1:09:49[SPEAKER_01]: And checks his spell book, but was interrupted by Texas Twister, eating to use the washroom as the coconut oil really cuts through a feller, which my thought was, people drink coconut oil.
- 1:09:58[SPEAKER_01]: I thought you'd put that on your body, but yeah.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_01]: Druid leaves Texas, Twister, and Suspended Animation and travels to the island of Pulo, Tengeng and meets up with unidipus and egotipus.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_01]: Druid needs to pick unidipus's brain before he changes shape, so basically transforms into a creature.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_01]: Druid didn't mean to offend before Hellstrom reveals himself.
- 1:10:21[SPEAKER_01]: Druid tries to read his mind, but is blocked by Hechstrom because he calls Hellstrom Hechstrom in this issue.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_01]: But he's blocked as long as he has his iron trident.
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_01]: Druid is fortunate enough that Hechstrom, so we're saying it like that.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_01]: Hechstrom trips and drops his trident, and enters his mind, which convenient.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_01]: Hechstrom's sister had approached Hechstrom.
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta correct myself here about Victoria with the same offer I've taken it, but did not know her location.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_01]: There is a winged man telling hex storm, hex storm, hex storm, hex storm, hex storm, swap, not to forget his cigarettes.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_01]: In the end, hex storm has no knowledge of where shooting star is.
- 1:10:56[SPEAKER_01]: The creature unites his change into proceeds to attack before a droid distracts him with the sexy nymph.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't work.
- 1:11:04[SPEAKER_01]: And the two decide to.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_00]: The shex is like a naked blonde with like blue flowers over her nipples.
- 1:11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Basically like a last crack and everything.
- 1:11:11[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, she looks like a living tattoo.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:11:14[SPEAKER_01]: The two decide to resort to violence instead because it's a comic book.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_01]: Surely there must be some white out of this.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_01]: Our powers are useless and gave us the ogre and then hexstrom don't call me surely because you know, that joke.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_00]: This is not airplane ones.
- 1:11:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Druid remembers the Tridium Cuspidore, a tactical nuclear device, the size of a football with 90 times the explosive yield of the bomb that level Nagasaki, although it's orbiting Uranus.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_01]: There's a joke in there somewhere.
- 1:11:40[SPEAKER_01]: The X-Storm locates the device after teleporting away and brings it back, detonating it, but the ogre is merely weakened, not really all that much harm.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_01]: So Druid then summons Drine Ice cubes to chill out the creature and gives him a stern talking to before trying to hypnotize it.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_01]: Hexdorm asks if Druid remembers the Phantom Comic Strip.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_01]: A miraculous transformation takes place inside the enormous ocular orbs of the creature created by the mind of the Tukla's old suit slayer, Aquia's humor begins to royal and swirl.
- 1:12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever that means, that is a reference from Phantom Comic Strip, I assume.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_01]: Gradually, a Phantom Image takes shape, could it be Victoria's star?
- 1:12:17[SPEAKER_01]: Only her hairdresser knows for sure.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_01]: The psychic imagery perceived by hex storm, it is immediately seized upon by Druid and magnified 10,000 full, whatever that means.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_01]: That is dialogue from the book by the way.
- 1:12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Suddenly Druid and star reappeared back at the Institute with Texas Twister.
- 1:12:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what happened in between there, but just magically they have Texas Twister again, and she's happy to see I'm calling him cutesy names while he lets out fart.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: She shows up with the sound effect with and yells text.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, well, huh?
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_00]: Miss Vicki, he calls her Miss Vicki, which is the cutest thing that has ever happened for this couple.
- 1:12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Lord of Mercy, I can't hold it any longer.
- 1:12:56[SPEAKER_01]: She says, come near your text and let's twist again like we did last summer.
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he says, well, honey, lamb, I never thought I'd see you again.
- 1:13:04[SPEAKER_01]: She goes, poopsie, puttin' pie, cute, see wute, see hugsie wugsie, stink buns, stink buns.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then it'd be roll-away, thanks, Doc.
- 1:13:14[SPEAKER_01]: And don't bother showing us to the door.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_01]: We'll find our own way out.
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_00]: And the wind's pick-up, well, he's prep-a-pap-a-frapin' fartin' it.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right, this is truly just wild, be-as-in-bout-head humor, the whole thing.
- 1:13:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Druid is rightfully disgusted and annoyed that they break through his wall because he just had it stuck Oh, like the disrespect in his home, you know, but basically Mark ruin walled and Tom defalco arrived from behind the Hole in the wall and introduced themselves to Druid their cruise ship sank and they asked if they could ruin with Dr. Druid He of course says down the corner last door in the left Mark comments of the room smells funny Tom lights his lighter and the ring explodes and that is the end of the issue
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_00]: And we get some truly wild art.
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_00]: There's close-ups on like eyes.
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's very renn and stimpy kind of art throughout all of this, like very silly cartoony faces.
- 1:14:00[SPEAKER_00]: Just that I love that you're always willing to take a journey with me, but I love when I give you a comic to read where you're like, well, that is Chad making me read.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know what?
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_01]: It was amusing.
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, some of the it was amusing.
- 1:14:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was a trip.
- 1:14:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it kind of I knew and really not much about Dr. Druid, but it's like the acronym for the Institute was what really sent me the Fiji Island Institute for the study of the occult than tanning like
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, very next wave actually.
- 1:14:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, actually very next wave is a fair way to put it.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's that kind of humor for sure.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Dr. Druid is like famously a really horrible character.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_00]: He is all about like white men stealing like appropriating culture from like Asian stereotypes, basically, is kind of his whole thing.
- 1:14:46[SPEAKER_00]: There's a really if you are familiar with Necra,
- 1:14:55[SPEAKER_00]: like she hates him so much.
- 1:14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister 8 is a way to describe this valley.
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_01]: When you described this valley honestly, my only introduction to Dr. Druid was there's that period when late 90s, early 2000s, when the dead Avengers came back from the dead, with Grim Reaper interrupted that parade.
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_01]: Burble compared to some of the others like mockingbird, Hellcat, those two stood out to me more, but it's a ton of fun.
- 1:15:18[SPEAKER_00]: It really is this whole little adventure.
- 1:15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Any thoughts on Texas Twister and shooting star and this little two
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, it's probably the most we've seen of their relationship outside of her being kidnapped.
- 1:15:31[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that she has these like rightfully rightfully kind of nauseating pet names for him.
- 1:15:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of the cherry on top stink bun
- 1:15:40[SPEAKER_00]: she calls him stink buns and he's farting in the wind.
- 1:15:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's just it's really funny to me.
- 1:15:44[SPEAKER_00]: My grandfather used to say the phrase like meaning something's going to be temporary, right?
- 1:15:50[SPEAKER_00]: He would say the phrase, well that's going to last about as long as a poop in a windstorm, which is a stupid thing to say, but it's very typical of this particular appearance of the Texas twister who is just farting away.
- 1:16:02[SPEAKER_01]: A poop in a windstorm is going to hit something
- 1:16:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, chips.
- 1:16:11[SPEAKER_00]: Did we have any other thoughts you wanted to share that you want me to add in?
- 1:16:14[SPEAKER_01]: For the most part, I feel like we got a covered, um, like I've said, it was a funny issue and really amusing and, yeah, it was a good time.
- 1:16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, uh, I'm going to cover the rest of his history quickly and then let's talk about what makes this character special.
- 1:16:26[SPEAKER_00]: We see him in Thunderbolt 57 where Texas Twitter shooting star among the heroes assaulted by Graviton.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_00]: We see him in She-Hulk volume two number one.
- 1:16:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's a single issue of him fighting South Pa in Texas, don't worry about it.
- 1:16:39[SPEAKER_00]: We see him in Thunderbolt 107.
- 1:16:41[SPEAKER_00]: where there's a big giant battle with Grandmaster over the wellspring of power, and this is where all the villains have been recruited into the Thunderbolts Army at a bunch of civil war era.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister gets put in charge of a Thunderbolts squad that includes bloodstrike, smiling tiger, and pretty persuasions who are all from the new warriors' foes that the mathematics.
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_00]: I like these characters a lot.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about this sometime.
- 1:17:05[SPEAKER_00]: There's also a lava man on this team.
- 1:17:08[SPEAKER_00]: In civil war number seven, the 50 state initiative gets implemented and Texas Twister and the Rangers are one of the first new superheroes announced in the super in the state of Texas so every state's getting a superhero team that's the Texas Rangers and Texas Twister is the leader so he's got a government position now, which is crazy.
- 1:17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we see them in Avengers the initiative one and two where the Rangers are at Camp Hammond and they help the initiative fight Hydra and then in Avengers the initiative 19 it's a full scroll invasion.
- 1:17:40[SPEAKER_00]: Lobo the wolf has been replaced by a scroll and the Rangers expose and kill the scroll, but there's also scrolls around and there's the team up with 3d man and ant man.
- 1:17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, that's it for the initiative era of this hero.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_00]: What are your thoughts, uh, uh, Terry on the Rangers as the state heroes of Texas?
- 1:17:58[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's it's got potential there's some good care to know that that could have could be developed a lot more fully and and it's kind of neat the idea of each state having their own little group and doing their own stuff I love this in my pitch to marvel when I wrote these characters I had armadillo joined their team because that just seems to work there's a deep that's appropriate.
- 1:18:20[SPEAKER_00]: We get them in the really, really fun Ben Riley Spider-Man title, excuse me, Kane Spider-Man title, where the Scarlet Spider volume 2, this is all the power, none of the responsibility.
- 1:18:31[SPEAKER_00]: I know Scott Fri loves this run in particular.
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_00]: We have the Scarlet Spider setting up shop in Houston, Texas and having all kinds of adventures.
- 1:18:39[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, when he is attacking rocks on, the Rangers get summoned to protect the corporation.
- 1:18:45[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister, Firebird, Shooting Star, Red Wolf, and a new alien character named 51.
- 1:18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Supposedly related to Area 51 and don't worry about it.
- 1:18:55[SPEAKER_00]: There's a superhero battle.
- 1:18:56[SPEAKER_00]: They fight an ancient energy creature called Maman and Then Koi Pam like the artist draws the hell out of Texas Twister who is very clearly in his leadership era here living his best life They're catchphrase rangers line it up, which is a good time
- 1:19:11[SPEAKER_01]: I will say I like that they finally got a catch for his little development here.
- 1:19:15[SPEAKER_01]: If it wasn't for Mr. Scott free, I would not have known about this series.
- 1:19:18[SPEAKER_01]: So between him and you, it was a good introduction to this era.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's a fun one.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a cute gay couple in this.
- 1:19:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's like a police chief and a doctor that are married that are in the supporting cast.
- 1:19:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good title.
- 1:19:30[SPEAKER_00]: Highly recommend.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_01]: Koi fans are it on this is really solid.
- 1:19:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's gorgeous, really.
- 1:19:34[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe the best image of Texas Twister.
- 1:19:36[SPEAKER_00]: uh, in Occupy Avengers number nine, don't worry about it.
- 1:19:39[SPEAKER_00]: Hydros taken over the world and we see Texas Twister fighting back with the resistance in Texas.
- 1:19:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then we get our only X-Men appearance.
- 1:19:46[SPEAKER_00]: It would X-Men unlimited the infinity comic number 13.
- 1:19:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is Fabian NECA's a telling the big juggernaut and decel storyline.
- 1:19:54[SPEAKER_00]: Juggernaut the character quicksand and primus attack a place where the Texas Twister is working security.
- 1:20:02[SPEAKER_00]: So he has to fight this random group.
- 1:20:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's a cool visual effect here where all of his swirly winds take on almost a human shape, almost like it's like a sentient ghost kind of thing in wind form.
- 1:20:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's also seen in his normal human form outside of those winds.
- 1:20:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then we get him where you can see his torso, but his lower half is cyclones, almost like cannonball in his blasting field.
- 1:20:21[SPEAKER_00]: And he's projecting like cyclones out of his hands in this.
- 1:20:25[SPEAKER_00]: You're trespassing on federal property, folks and Texas twisters, the duly deputized Texas Marshall here to take you down.
- 1:20:31[SPEAKER_00]: Don't know why your local enough to hit a federal prison juggernaut, but you ain't going one step farther.
- 1:20:37[SPEAKER_00]: But it turns out the governor was actually working with the anti-mutant group, absolution solutions.
- 1:20:42[SPEAKER_00]: And they have rubber made captured in that building.
- 1:20:45[SPEAKER_00]: So juggernaut is there to rescue a captured teenage mutant.
- 1:20:49[SPEAKER_00]: Remember rubber made everyone?
- 1:20:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm here to you as as an old son.
- 1:20:57[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of it for Texas Twister.
- 1:20:59[SPEAKER_00]: I want to talk about some of the nuances of this character, but how are we feeling about his character as we're wrapping up this review of his history?
- 1:21:07[SPEAKER_00]: What do you like?
- 1:21:07[SPEAKER_00]: What do you dislike?
- 1:21:08[SPEAKER_01]: I do think this character is a lot of fun.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_01]: Love his appearance.
- 1:21:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's very striking and it stands out.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_01]: I do want to see him developed more just the thought of the Rangers being Texas team.
- 1:21:19[SPEAKER_01]: We really haven't seen a lot of focus in that particular area.
- 1:21:22[SPEAKER_01]: Like we've had a lot of focus on New York like we're everything is centralized.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_01]: We've had a little bit of the West Coast with San Francisco and Los Angeles with the West Coast Avengers, but we never really got to see a lot of the other states outside of the initiative era.
- 1:21:36[SPEAKER_01]: So hearing your thoughts about like,
- 1:21:38[SPEAKER_01]: proposed team in that area like with the Rangers.
- 1:21:41[SPEAKER_01]: I like the sounds of it.
- 1:21:42[SPEAKER_01]: He just seems like a lot of fun.
- 1:21:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think he has a lot of a lot of untapped potential and I think some of his early appearances there were very like he's just this one thing.
- 1:21:51[SPEAKER_02]: He's like just trying to become a big famous hero and he doesn't want to mess around with the little guy.
- 1:21:55[SPEAKER_02]: And then he's all obsessed with his with the woman he loves who was a demon then the other woman he loves who tried out to be demon And once once he can get past that I think there's a lot of of untapped potential there to really develop him It's a it's an unusual but not hard to understand set of powers.
- 1:22:11[SPEAKER_00]: He's got outside of the casual racism Worked it is dialogue, which isn't his fault right.
- 1:22:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's from Texas.
- 1:22:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mean that's
- 1:22:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's true too.
- 1:22:21[SPEAKER_00]: This is an interesting character because he's very cowboy, but it's very much the open range version.
- 1:22:28[SPEAKER_00]: We don't see this character with guns, but his girlfriend is, right?
- 1:22:31[SPEAKER_00]: His motivations seem primarily money, fame, and like beautiful women.
- 1:22:35[SPEAKER_00]: When he's growing weaker, he'll make the deal with the devil.
- 1:22:37[SPEAKER_00]: He felt bad about sacrificing his girlfriend to a demon, but that's also clearly a choice he made.
- 1:22:43[SPEAKER_00]: and he's willing to fight the heroes when the payday is coming in.
- 1:22:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't mind that about this character.
- 1:22:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's, you know, he's almost a mercenary in a little way, but he'll be pretty competent in the use of his powers.
- 1:22:55[SPEAKER_00]: And the visual effects we get very him are are really interesting to me.
- 1:22:59[SPEAKER_00]: His accent is more annoying than rogues.
- 1:23:02[SPEAKER_01]: I will, I will say with this character, I'm surprised he hasn't appeared in a Deadpool book because going into this unlike he's appeared in Deadpool right and seeing he hasn't, but I'm adding on to Terry's note about the potential I see that as well.
- 1:23:14[SPEAKER_01]: I do see a similarity with him and Robins powers having done Robins trial recently as well.
- 1:23:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that was fun.
- 1:23:28[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister is has got some interesting character motivations, a cool power set, a cool visual, and there's enough to make it more key.
- 1:23:34[SPEAKER_00]: Also, a little bit like Banshee in the 70s comics.
- 1:23:37[SPEAKER_00]: He comes across as a little older.
- 1:23:39[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't seem like a 20 something.
- 1:23:40[SPEAKER_00]: He looks like he's got some history under his belt.
- 1:23:43[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's the mustache.
- 1:23:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of giving good like he's in his late 30s early 40s and he's got a little bit of like a showman.
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_00]: energy to his character in the way that like Johnny Blaze ghost writer does, right?
- 1:23:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is a motorcycle stuntman.
- 1:23:56[SPEAKER_00]: These two would be interesting interacting as well.
- 1:23:59[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister and ghost writer.
- 1:24:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know quite where he would fit into a prominent role on a team, but he'd be an interesting avenger if someone wrote an interesting story about this guy.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Shooting stars kind of a flop, but
- 1:24:11[SPEAKER_00]: but I like them too.
- 1:24:13[SPEAKER_02]: He definitely he'd have the kind of dead vibes that he could see him parenting or maybe working with a younger hero and kind of a mentoring sort of way.
- 1:24:22[SPEAKER_00]: Seeing him kind of take a turn as a villain as well would be interesting because this character has some old prejudices.
- 1:24:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I visited the Alamo a couple of years ago and I'm getting real Texas Twister vibes but again, every one of his appearances of wildly good time.
- 1:24:37[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Twister versus Juggernaut is a literal story we have, which is crazy.
- 1:24:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of why I see him appearing in a Deadpool book is just because of almost not quite morally gray, but you know, you can be good or bad.
- 1:24:48[SPEAKER_00]: Deadpool has not had the chance to crack the joke of like Texas Twister is that your favorite sex position.
- 1:24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like the potential is there, but also don't spin cows around at a rodeo.
- 1:25:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's not a great.
- 1:25:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to hear any concluding thoughts about just this character with the place he occupies.
- 1:25:08[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any stories you'd like to see?
- 1:25:09[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like he's a lot of fun and we've given him some due gestures.
- 1:25:14[SPEAKER_00]: This was a fun place to take cowboy month on my show.
- 1:25:17[SPEAKER_02]: visually I really like his his costume.
- 1:25:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's I've always when I first saw it in the character a few decades back when I was starting to get into comics again it that he was one that kind of shows like now that's a neat look.
- 1:25:28[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of feel like he's taken steps over the course of what we talked about to kind of mature as a character in a sense that he could in the right hand so he could he could be like a mentor to a team or a working with younger heroes.
- 1:25:41[SPEAKER_02]: I could see that working really well.
- 1:25:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:25:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm a fan.
- 1:25:44[SPEAKER_00]: I like this guy.
- 1:25:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's he's fun.
- 1:25:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's a fun villain and a fun hero if we can just get past that accent.
- 1:25:50[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's a well, that's almost my favorite part outside the mouse crash.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_00]: I do a good mustache.
- 1:25:56[SPEAKER_01]: I do feel like as his appearance is one on the accent kind of tone down a little bit.
- 1:26:00[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, let's bring it back.
- 1:26:02[SPEAKER_00]: That one whole issue is just that's raw, if that was a joke.
- 1:26:05[SPEAKER_01]: I could see him appearing in a lot of different type of books, um, I do like the idea of him in a mentorship role, but I also see him as, um, not necessarily Merc for higher, but I guess Ciro, or super powered, being for higher.
- 1:26:18[SPEAKER_01]: I could see him working alongside characters like Outlaw, who also has a bit of a Western motif going as well.
- 1:26:23[SPEAKER_00]: This is the perfect segue, because stay tuned for the next Patreon episode after that, where
- 1:26:32[SPEAKER_00]: We, uh, we get a delved into that character.
- 1:26:34[SPEAKER_00]: She's delicious, lump her.
- 1:26:36[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I've got some owns all the favorite characters you can tell.
- 1:26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, but also also on the show this month, we will be covering, uh, Absalom from the externals, who is, uh, origins in the Wild West, which if you didn't realize, we're going to be covering the 1950s here on the Apache kid, which is, who, one of those, well, this is a problem, stories, but it's an interesting character.
- 1:26:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then we'll be closing it out with Calico from Gail Simone's run, Becca Simone, Simon Fennett from the current outliers run in the books.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's what you can watch for this month on the Patreon.
- 1:27:09[SPEAKER_00]: Follow the show at Gail Simone's under score lane.
- 1:27:11[SPEAKER_00]: I really enjoy interacting with folks there and Terry, you're so delightful and interacting when I play my dumb game's on Instagram throughout the whole game.

- 1:27:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so grateful to have both of you as friends.
- 1:27:23[SPEAKER_00]: This is a delicious time.

- 1:28:21[SPEAKER_00]: The dog.
- 1:28:21[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:28:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:28:22[SPEAKER_00]: Crypto with the K.

- 1:28:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I can't wait to hang out again sometime.
- 1:28:35[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for listening.
- 1:28:36[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you had a great time with Drew Daniels, the Texas Twister today.
- 1:28:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's so big.
- 1:28:39[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for inviting me and including me in this.
- 1:28:42[SPEAKER_02]: Because I've got your hair.
- 1:28:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I had a great time.
