- 0:09Speaker 4: Jeff Legwald he's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 3: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 2: i BDW Local sixty eight. Start with the JOm and
- 0:19Speaker 2: with the career bas Leggae on Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:25Speaker 2: two five.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Out an off brow today, Monday night football double header
- 0:32Speaker 1: starting at five thirty Tennessee and Miami kicking off the
- 0:36Speaker 1: Dolphins two and a half point favorites with that game
- 0:39Speaker 1: at hard Rock Stadium there in Miami six fifteen, Game
- 0:43Speaker 1: number two, and this one's a fun one. The three
- 0:45Speaker 1: to oho Seahawks the two to one Lions will battle
- 0:48Speaker 1: at Ford Field. That one must see television tonight, that
- 0:53Speaker 1: first game tonight. It's merely a placeholder. Jeff Legwald, never
- 0:58Speaker 1: a placeholder, always a high light on the program. Joins
- 1:01Speaker 1: us right now here on a Monday afternoon. Uh so, Jeff,
- 1:06Speaker 1: how is Tyler be Day? How did he get home?
- 1:09Speaker 1: What airplane was he on? And how excited was Sean
- 1:14Speaker 1: Payton to talk to you about him? Yeah?
- 1:15Speaker 4: How dare you ask about injury at his where do
- 1:18Speaker 4: you think you are?
- 1:22Speaker 3: You know? He uh? Uh.
- 1:24Speaker 5: They were very happy for for Tyler be day. Obviously,
- 1:27Speaker 5: he took a commercial flight home last night. He was
- 1:31Speaker 5: examined by doctors in in New Jersey. Uh, and then
- 1:36Speaker 5: he returned on it after after the team had left
- 1:39Speaker 5: on the charter.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:41Speaker 5: You know, there was some thought if if the doctor
- 1:44Speaker 5: said he would have to stay overnight for an observation. Uh,
- 1:47Speaker 5: somebody from the Broncos medical staff would have stayed in
- 1:50Speaker 5: New Jersey too, But.
- 1:51Speaker 3: As it was he was checked out.
- 1:55Speaker 5: They put him on a commercial flight with the the
- 1:57Speaker 5: Broncos staffer and they flew back. And I believe I
- 2:02Speaker 5: was told. I was told last night when they were
- 2:04Speaker 5: still in the air. I think they landed, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 5: nine o'clock Denver time last night.
- 2:10Speaker 3: He was he was with the team today.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Peyton offered no update on the injury, however, so we're
- 2:17Speaker 5: not sure if it's still just the back or if
- 2:21Speaker 5: he suffered concussion symptoms when his head hit the ground
- 2:25Speaker 5: after the play was over.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And that's none of your business, Jeff, so please don't
- 2:30Speaker 1: even ask about that, Okay.
- 2:32Speaker 5: As as any and all coaches know, I will ask
- 2:35Speaker 5: the questions.
- 2:37Speaker 3: That's what I do, all right, Jeff?
- 2:40Speaker 4: Were you a little surprised at the uh? I didn't
- 2:43Speaker 4: watch the whole presser. I watched parts of it. Look,
- 2:47Speaker 4: this is a good win. These are two good wins, Okay,
- 2:50Speaker 4: I not pretty wins. There was a pretty one in
- 2:53Speaker 4: Tampa Bay, I guess, but not a pretty one yesterday.
- 2:55Speaker 4: But you went on the road. You found a way
- 2:57Speaker 4: to win, to win two games people think you could in.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Were you surprised at the mood or are you not
- 3:03Speaker 4: surprised because he's frustrated by the offense.
- 3:05Speaker 3: What was your read on all that yesterday?
- 3:08Speaker 5: And I think it's all of the above. I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 5: you know, it bothers him greatly when the offense isn't
- 3:13Speaker 5: working and it's not. I mean he had bo Nicks
- 3:16Speaker 5: had minus seven yards at halftime, and the Broncos, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 5: Sean Payton's acting like it was a monsoon.
- 3:24Speaker 3: It was. It was rain, and I you know, I'm.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Gonna be hard pressed if bo Nicks is going to
- 3:31Speaker 5: be a starter for the Denver Broncos for a long time.
- 3:35Speaker 5: He's gonna play in a lot of games that where
- 3:37Speaker 5: the weather is a hell of a lot worse than
- 3:39Speaker 5: it was, you know, yesterday for one half in New York,
- 3:45Speaker 5: and a professional quarterback should not have minus seven yards
- 3:49Speaker 5: at halftime.
- 3:50Speaker 3: That is, that is a sign.
- 3:52Speaker 5: That what's being called, what's being planned, the execution, none
- 3:57Speaker 5: of it is working very well. If you're minus. He
- 4:00Speaker 5: was the first quarterback since nineteen ninety one to have
- 4:04Speaker 5: more than three attempts and minus at least, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 5: that much negative yardage at halftime of a game. And
- 4:14Speaker 5: if it were not for this team's defense, they might
- 4:17Speaker 5: well be owned four. So I mean that that's the
- 4:20Speaker 5: stark reality, and I think, you know, you know, I
- 4:25Speaker 5: think the defense is to be sort of celebrated. They're
- 4:29Speaker 5: in the top four in every statistical metric except rushing defense,
- 4:35Speaker 5: and even that after the last two games they're at twelve.
- 4:39Speaker 5: So it's not like they're you know, deep in the
- 4:42Speaker 5: in the pattern, but you're talking about a team that's
- 4:44Speaker 5: number one, two or three or four in every other
- 4:49Speaker 5: statistical metric on defense. They haven't done anything like that
- 4:54Speaker 5: at any point in the season since Wade Phillips was
- 4:56Speaker 5: calling plays for this team. So they do have defense
- 5:02Speaker 5: figured out. The upgrades and the defensive line are working Andy,
- 5:07Speaker 5: and I think that, you know, should he be in
- 5:09Speaker 5: a better mood about that, probably, But he has always
- 5:13Speaker 5: said it's harder to coach after a win.
- 5:15Speaker 3: He firmly believes that.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Jeff Legwall brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 5:20Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with a job,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you end with a career. Jeff. I know you chart
- 5:28Speaker 1: every single play and watch the film afterwards. You've been
- 5:32Speaker 1: on the East Coast in a damn hurricane for the
- 5:34Speaker 1: better part of what probably feels like an eternity. So
- 5:38Speaker 1: I don't know how much you've been able to do
- 5:39Speaker 1: that today. But the Vance Joseph game plan that he
- 5:43Speaker 1: put together, there was no spring Chicken he was messing
- 5:47Speaker 1: with out there. That was Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron Rodgers
- 5:52Speaker 1: was flummixed, to say the least, by the blitz packages
- 5:56Speaker 1: that Vance Joseph was dialing up in the way that
- 5:58Speaker 1: he was disguising the pressures that were happening out there yesterday.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I mean, I would think the first game ball from
- 6:05Speaker 1: that game has to go to the Broncos defensive coordinator.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Of what you saw and of what you've seen so
- 6:11Speaker 1: far on the film, how did he do it well.
- 6:14Speaker 5: You know, he's using an awful lot of stuff he
- 6:18Speaker 5: learned from Wade Phillips, and Vance has always said Wade
- 6:22Speaker 5: had a huge impact on his career. Now Vance has
- 6:25Speaker 5: added some of his own tweaks to it, but a
- 6:28Speaker 5: lot of the Nickel Rush packages, some of the dime
- 6:31Speaker 5: looks those are, that's a lot of Wade Phillips in there.
- 6:35Speaker 5: And they got two free runners on Aaron Rodgers. And
- 6:39Speaker 5: I don't know that I've ever seen that in a
- 6:42Speaker 5: game Aaron Rodgers has played.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I looked it up today. He hasn't had five.
- 6:47Speaker 5: He hasn't been sacked five times in the game since
- 6:49Speaker 5: twenty twenty, so it's not like this happens a lot.
- 6:53Speaker 5: And they sacked Mayfield seven times, they sacked Aaron Rodgers
- 6:58Speaker 5: five times. They act from nine different players right now.
- 7:04Speaker 5: That tells you that's a lot of scheme and they
- 7:08Speaker 5: have a lot of players that fit what they do.
- 7:11Speaker 5: And you know, score one for a little continuity, you know,
- 7:15Speaker 5: for keeping the bulk of the staff around.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Jim Leonard has added some things.
- 7:20Speaker 5: I recognize, you know, some of the stuff they're doing
- 7:24Speaker 5: from from what I saw Wisconsin do, especially in some
- 7:28Speaker 5: of the.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Some of the rush looks.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I mean, there's an awful lot of coverage things, and
- 7:34Speaker 5: that tells you vance Joseph is open to ideas as well.
- 7:39Speaker 3: So there's a.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Lot good going on with the defense. And if anyone
- 7:45Speaker 5: ever wondered what the true value of pat curtain could be,
- 7:48Speaker 5: you're you're seeing it. They they're playing ten on ten,
- 7:52Speaker 5: you know, and and that that changes things, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 5: because wherever they put certain is impacting what the offense
- 8:00Speaker 5: is doing, and they get some predictive items from that.
- 8:04Speaker 5: And if you can get some predictive things on defense,
- 8:08Speaker 5: that helps immensely. And Sirtan has taken DK Metcalf, Mike Evans,
- 8:16Speaker 5: and Garret Or out of games. I mean, he has
- 8:21Speaker 5: made them non factors so much so the quarterbacks just
- 8:25Speaker 5: sort of quit looking while the game's in the balance.
- 8:29Speaker 4: What else does the rest of that secondary do though,
- 8:31Speaker 4: because a couple of times it looked like some coverage
- 8:33Speaker 4: sacks too, Jeff, I mean, Riley Moss, Brandon Jones is
- 8:36Speaker 4: starting to look like a real savvy signing beached PJ.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Locke is look like he's living up to the role
- 8:41Speaker 4: he's being asked to play. Talk about the rest of
- 8:43Speaker 4: the secondary too.
- 8:45Speaker 5: No, you know they they already had a piece that's
- 8:49Speaker 5: important in all this. Jakun McMillan is one of the
- 8:51Speaker 5: best nickel corners in the league. And if you're gonna
- 8:54Speaker 5: play defense now these days, every good defense has a
- 8:59Speaker 5: good nickel corner. It's just a must have. So you're
- 9:02Speaker 5: starting with Certain and one of the better nickel corners
- 9:05Speaker 5: in the league. And Riley Moss makes a mistake from
- 9:10Speaker 5: time to time, but he is what an awful lot
- 9:13Speaker 5: of corners have not been opposite of a player the
- 9:17Speaker 5: caliber of Certain or Champ Bailey or a keep to Leave.
- 9:22Speaker 3: He is competitive.
- 9:23Speaker 5: He competes on every snap and I've really been fascinated
- 9:28Speaker 5: to watch him. I had a chance to talk to
- 9:30Speaker 5: him for a while one day at the Greenbrier, just
- 9:33Speaker 5: to pick his brain a little bit about how he
- 9:35Speaker 5: approaches things, and he is he has that competitive streak
- 9:40Speaker 5: it takes to be the other guy, and he and
- 9:45Speaker 5: Certain give them Andy. That's one of the biggest sets
- 9:47Speaker 5: of corners in the league. And if you can play
- 9:50Speaker 5: with that athleticism and that size, the reach, you know
- 9:55Speaker 5: that the catch radius on defense, as it were, you
- 9:58Speaker 5: have a lot of advantage and you can see it,
- 10:01Speaker 5: you know, and they're they're not making assignment mistakes either
- 10:05Speaker 5: when they switch from man to zone or move certain
- 10:10Speaker 5: off the main receiver.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Uh, they're not making bus in coverage.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Everybody's playing there, you know, playing the snaps the way
- 10:19Speaker 5: they should. And you know, Vance Joseph actually mentioned that
- 10:22Speaker 5: last week that one of the keys was that they
- 10:26Speaker 5: have a good handle on the game plan by Wednesday already,
- 10:30Speaker 5: and then Thursday and Friday, they're just reducing the mistakes
- 10:35Speaker 5: every day and then by the time they play on Sunday,
- 10:38Speaker 5: they're playing a pretty clean brand of football. I mean,
- 10:43Speaker 5: some of those pis you're gonna take if you're a
- 10:45Speaker 5: defensive coordinator, because you want guys fighting for the ball.
- 10:49Speaker 5: You know, it's not silly ones. They're not pulling the
- 10:51Speaker 5: jersey to keep the guy from running away from them.
- 10:54Speaker 5: They're they're competing for the ball, and I think all
- 10:58Speaker 5: of those things. You know it it's a rush and
- 11:01Speaker 5: cover league, and if you can do both, it looks
- 11:04Speaker 5: like it does you know how it looked for the
- 11:06Speaker 5: Broncos against the Jets. You know, again, thirteen point eight
- 11:10Speaker 5: points of a game, they're surrendering ball rights that that
- 11:15Speaker 5: should be a three and one or a four and all,
- 11:17Speaker 5: you know a lot of the time, and it's you know,
- 11:20Speaker 5: if they get anything at all on offense, they could
- 11:23Speaker 5: start to build something.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Maybe Legy you celebrated it when the move was made.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Is a savvy kind of by low acquisition for the Broncos.
- 11:32Speaker 1: But yesterday we watched it play out in real time.
- 11:34Speaker 1: John Franklin Myers, the Jets given up on him to
- 11:38Speaker 1: try and get a Son Reddick. That absolutely is backfired
- 11:41Speaker 1: on them and Franklin Myers yesterday, in particular the goal
- 11:44Speaker 1: line stand that the Broncos put together and forced that
- 11:47Speaker 1: field goal in the second quarter. Franklin Myers, I mean
- 11:51Speaker 1: he blew up two of those plays basically individually by himself.
- 11:56Speaker 1: When it comes to just like eight plus five star
- 11:58Speaker 1: kind of savvy move made by George Payton, John Franklin
- 12:02Speaker 1: Myers is as good as it gets.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know what it doesnt is that it
- 12:07Speaker 5: lets all the other guys play where they should. And
- 12:10Speaker 5: that was a big problem in their front last year,
- 12:13Speaker 5: either by injury or they weren't a lack of production.
- 12:17Speaker 5: They were having to put Zach Allen and DJ Jones
- 12:20Speaker 5: in spots where they really don't belong. And Zach Allen
- 12:25Speaker 5: got double teamed all the time last year because no
- 12:28Speaker 5: one else was getting a double team. And right now,
- 12:33Speaker 5: you know, John Franklin Myers just changes everything because his
- 12:38Speaker 5: effort level is the same on every snap, his production
- 12:41Speaker 5: level is the same on every snap. And then you
- 12:44Speaker 5: have a guy like Zach Allen who plays a higher
- 12:48Speaker 5: percentage of snaps than a lot of defensive linemen in
- 12:51Speaker 5: the league because he's got stamina and drive. They've got
- 12:55Speaker 5: a good combination right now that really messes things up
- 13:00Speaker 5: for offenses if you have that kind of motor up front. Collectively,
- 13:06Speaker 5: now they have two players right now, Zach Allen and
- 13:09Speaker 5: Malcolm Roach, that are in the top eleven in the
- 13:12Speaker 5: league with pass rush win rates against single blockers. So
- 13:18Speaker 5: that tells you the impact of John Franklin Myers. Those
- 13:21Speaker 5: other guys are getting one on ones and they're winning.
- 13:25Speaker 1: It's good analytics dropped in right there. Got some pass
- 13:28Speaker 1: rush win rate from our guy, Jeff Legwald. He's going
- 13:31Speaker 1: to be writing about the defense all week long at
- 13:33Speaker 1: ESPN dot com. Leggy, beautiful work as always, buddy.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Thank you, Thanks Bella.
- 13:38Speaker 1: We'll say you all right, Jeff Legwald with us right
- 13:41Speaker 1: there on the Craig, Ben and Lindahl Show. As always,
- 13:43Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald's appearances are brought to you by our friends
- 13:46Speaker 1: at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 13:51Speaker 1: You start with a job, you end with a career.
