- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, welcome to MMTV NFL podcast.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Connor Orr, and to my left is Mark Sessler, live from Hollywood, California.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Mark is our special guest today, because Albert is off at a writer's retreat, finishing off the great American novel, a tone of sex and generational frustration and angst regarding AI.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: So, it's either that or a ski trip, I forget where Albert is.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: But no, it feels like from what I know about Albert,
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: That feels like the kind of book that he simply must write like he's he's got to go to the writers retreat He sounds more productive than I I it took me 40 minutes to get out of my building with broken elevators to get a Starbucks coffee And that's all I've accomplished today
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: I shut down so hard after this NFL season and I think it's one of those things where maybe it's if you do it right, you just can't get out of bed for three days or I don't know if I maybe we did it too much like we did too much football and so it's like it's a drug where you're trying to just measure the appropriate amount so that you can function in society after the super
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's a weird week.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I kind of had people tell me over the years when I first started blogging at NFL.com, nonstop.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, this is the week that's quietly, well, not quite one of the quietest weeks, and like it's hushed.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: But then you're off, like I went to the deep wilds of Missouri for a couple of days on the Undisclosed Mission.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: And like, you know, then you're checking your phone and all these little transactions are happening and stupid stuff's occurrence.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: stop like I'm not part of this right now.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I had this great conversation at the Super Bowl with Nate Tyson from Yahoo who's amazing and I've never met him before and we had dinner together and he was such a cool person and we were talking about just kind of life and work and everything like that and he was talking about this week in particular and he's like
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: what happens to your brain because you wanted to know if it was the same thing that happened to my brain he's like so you're just sitting down and you're trying to enjoy like a morning cup of coffee and then like four things happen in the NFL and like it's not we're not out of our chapter we're not town pillars are it's not our job to break it but all of a sudden like something uncomfortable just happens in our body and it's like I have to log onto something and comment on this and be like wow great trade you know and it's like
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: what happened there like what what rewiring of brain circuitry took place that that that's like a thing that happens.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, I think for like for me, because you know, we're sports writers, so we're tromp, we certainly are traumatized as much as anyone in the in the um, milieu, but like like it is like this, it used to be a trigger of like, now you need to get online and write about this.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of go, it harks back to more slave labor eras that we were into some degree.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: So I recognize that for me, it's just like am I supposed to take notes on this or provide thoughts for a show that's upcoming three weeks from now.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: Can I skip this?
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: Will this be deep in the distance?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Just measuring how much under the gun I am, I guess.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think it is for me like the trauma stems from when we used to work at NFL.com together and by the way, if you're not subscribed to Marcho with Dan Hand is called Head the Call and I get to be kind of a fun little weird- Well it's your show too, absolutely.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you, you need to do that, and Mark and I work together for a long time in NFL.com.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: We also hosted a, uh, I don't know, a cult classic conspiracy theory podcast on a now defunct platform called bumpers, uh, called heat light.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, if you're not in tune to all of that, please, uh, correct yourself now.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that the, the source of the trauma for me stems from when I swear going to NFL.com,
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I took that job because beat writing, I was getting pretty serious with the woman who'd become my now wife and I was like, this will be like nice, right?
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Cause it's nine to five in theory, but during that nine to five, you are on and anything that happens in the NFL and so, you know, I would start to get a little risky and like some days I would like plan a picnic in the middle of my shift like, well, she was at work and then
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: When the Saturday shift started, it was like, okay, you know what?
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go on an elaborate hike and I am going to pre-write like four in the can things about like Kirk Cousins is Achilles coming along fine and just send them throughout the day like feather it in.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: But the gigantic fear was always right that like Jason Pierre Paul is gonna blow his hand up and it's gonna be the fourth of July And you're gonna be you know halfway up Eagle Mountain with no way of weighing in on this whatsoever
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're on a mountain top, and it's going to take at least 70 to 80 minutes to even return to a Wi-Fi connection.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: I do recall you're daring to do on that front, you alerted some of us.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think that we were in an emergency position, like Connors taking a hike, and if things got really nasty, maybe one of us jumps on to help, but I admired you for your
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you said to, um, one of the largest corporations in the entire civilization, the NFL, F yourself.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm taking a hike.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, and it worked out.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: You married the, you married the girl.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's true.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: And we're here.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, and we're here today to talk, believe it or not, uh, about quarterbacks in the quarterback care cell.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: And so, I have this piece running on, uh, on Wednesday that I'm excited about.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: And so we're going to kind of preview it here.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: and talk about some of the stuff in there about re-examining the quarterback care.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, and how perfect is it that I have marked here to tie a bone it because we did a quarterback care cell kind of preview preview, first week of September and Justin Grayver, the producer of feed the call was on.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: We had a great conversation about
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: Camward and CJ Straud and all this stuff and in a lot of it, I think is still relevant I think the quarterback market's gonna be super robust But I'll put it to you this way first before we get into Xive tears.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: I have all this annoying Shit that you have to talk about with me Mark, and this is gonna be a lot of fun But I'm gonna put to you this way broadly holistically before we dig in
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: We're about a week post Super Bowl, we can have post Super Bowl Sam Darnold as a Super Bowl champion.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: Has this Super Bowl change the way that you felt or thought about the quarterback position in any meaningful way?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's the most intriguing, like, concept coming out of this whole postseason in the samdarmal experience.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really been two years of it, right?
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: And you mix it into a cool lead with Baker Mayfield as well.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, are we giving up on quarterbacks too quickly?
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: I've always thought that.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: I would say, like, that's always been a fair question, because I'm old enough where I hard can back to, like,
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you grew up with like Phil Simms and Joe Thiesman and these guys and these guys didn't really even start to like year four or five there was no fifth year option all this business It was like you don't start a rookie quarterback typically you kind of blend them in with a team that's ready for them Um, I will say this though.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: Does it change what I think like do we if it's like do we now?
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Is the fascination in the fervor to go get the mid tier market court mid like the lower price quarterback and just hope you get samedarnal 2.0 No because I'll take like 70 years of quarterback information right over seven months of quarterback information
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Sam Darnol, it's like, it is a study in like put Sam, a Sam Darnol level talent in a place where he can thrive.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: It versus a, like the next coming of the Vietnam War, which was the early part of his career.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I do that.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's environment, but like, it's like it just takes these guys time to mature and grow and he pointed to we talked about it on our pod like that year with the Niners.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: Put all these struggling quarterbacks with a competent team that can teach you the toughest
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: the 49ers are the equivalent of like when a coach gets fired and used to go to Alabama.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: Now he goes to Ohio State or you know if you need you know any sort of like life rehab it's like whatever it's like group therapy or you know anything like that right it's it's an all-important kind of gap year thing but to me and I'm glad you said this because you mentioned like not ignoring 70 years worth of information and I think the one thing is that Sam and
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not comparing him to Trent Dill for I think Sam is more talented of a quarterback than Trent Dill for the Trent Dill for did win a Super Bowl.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think what we're learning about is maybe that that minimum.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like what do you need at minimum from a quarterback to be able to win a Super Bowl?
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: And however you want to tabulate it whether it's like DVOA or EPA or completion percentage.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like what is that?
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like you take that.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: Those maybe those
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: six or seven like air quotes worst quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl in the modern era.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: And what's the bare minimum that you need from that?
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: And to spin it forward, like I think the other thing that I take away from this is that coaches are just running out of excuses.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I think any time you talk to a coach who has been let go, the first thing is always, I didn't have a quarterback, I didn't have a quarterback, I didn't have a quarterback, right?
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to draft
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: Every coach that gets fired said that they wanted to draft Patrick Mahomes in 2018.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, my team wouldn't let me.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like, okay, yeah, well, you passed them twice before the chiefs got up there.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think like Mike McDonald walked into this situation in Seattle and said, okay, what do I have?
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: I have a kick ass defensive line that's already really good.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'll draft one more guy there and kind of make it like a super power and then I have a really good secondary and if I have a nickel like our defense is just going to be overpowering and then the rest of it you kind of need to keep pace.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: Every team kind of has access to
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: and a glut of talent in some positional group, right?
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, you know, more coaches should be, I think less concerned about the fact that they don't have a quarterback and more concerned about like being a detective on their own roster and finding a way to make their own Mike McDonald's situation, right?
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's the Eagles a couple years ago where it's like, I still argue they don't have a quarterback, right?
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Jalen Hurts is not to me, like a top 12 quarterback.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: And what did they do?
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: They have a glut of offence of lying talent.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: So let's go get sick one Barkley just run everybody over, you know, and it's more complicated than that, but I just kept thinking maybe we're not You don't need the alien and I think that we're just like maybe we're in this era where we don't have to like Salivate over the same four guys and then discount everybody else in the world for not being able to win in super
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think the aliens largely missed the playoffs this year.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they didn't even get there and if anything, we came out of this postseason experience thinking like defensive play callers, defenses in general, strength up front on both sides of the ball for years in a row now matter.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: and a really solid balanced team that's really well-coached and modernized with a lot of like young players on both sides of the ball to play freaky positions and mishmash positions on defense especially like your quarterback if he puts together three or four good games can get you there because it kind of reminded me I don't put like Joe Flacco in the same category but like when they won that Super Bowl of Kniner's like he went on that insane
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: anything.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you got the flaco melting down version, or if Darnold had done what some people suspected he might and he didn't, then we're not talking about this.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: It also requires that quarterback to play at his ceiling.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: But the floor certainly makes it possible.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, it makes me think like, could you win a Super Bowl with like Derek Carr or someone else?
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: Some people just don't seem to have it.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how to describe that, but like Darnold just
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: Essentially etched out to 14 win seasons in a row, which I think two quarterbacks ever have done, so it is part of the solution.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this isn't saying, you know, I got two different teams, two four, it's 14 game, two 14 win seasons and we're all just kind of like the but does he suck, you know.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's how they feel about our broadcasting career like do those guys actually suck like it seems like it's an okay listen, but So I have this broken down into tears and it's funny whenever I do something where tears are involved I what piece did you used to write for NFL dot com and you had categories that were like flots him and jet some do you remember that
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I certainly don't remember it.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's that.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: No, but there were so many.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think we started writing at the turn where everything needed to be a list in categories.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's the way that people, and it's like, and now it's like, this will take you four minutes to read.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: But like, I get it, but like, yeah, there were things where like, I can't do categories the same way that they would want me to do, one through seven.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: I need to name them because some of these categories are insane filled with insane people.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I always think about that like I need to not only and that was the beauty and in of Mark's writing and still is the beauty of Mark's writing It's like the the verbiage and the words and the information were good But then there was humor and this sort of burst of light and energy in like the the mundane like the subheads Like you couldn't even miss the subheads and I think that's the employer thought that I'd probably still be there But like not I'm glad you didn't say
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: my category is here are ours follows and so I've established brand name starters with strings attached.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: I have possible upside prospects aged 27 and under.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: I have veterans with immediate starting capabilities and then you have call and see what happens.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: These are quarterbacks that are kind of entrenched, but
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: and there's just kind of an ellipsis there, like what might happen if you call their team.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's consolation prize veterans, which is essentially like the entire giants quarterback room from 2024 minus Jackson Dart.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to start by by saying this because the top tier names in air quotes, again, because this is free agency.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: They're available or theoretically available for reason.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: are to a compiler because both of these teams want to get rid of their quarterbacks.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: Both of these teams want to fresh start.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Both of these teams have new head coaches.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: And both of these quarterbacks have exhausted, I think, at least in the public discourse, like they've had multiple offensive coordinators.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: They've had multiple head coaches.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've seen the best of them.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll put it to you first, like, do you think,
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: anybody like wants either of these guys and like I think there's a difference between like I would take him and like no we need to go out and get one of these two guys because I don't know.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't see it.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: The latter I don't I don't think the latter is occurring like someone's pounding the table right now and like some bunker in New Jersey for either one of these quarterbacks but
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's kind of like when I first went to my first ever homecoming dance, you know, you're a young person and I had to act like the girl that I wanted to go with had a different boyfriend and then there was another girl who was her friend who was like, yeah I'll go with you so like we went together and like the theme song of the of the entire dance was love the one you're with it was an oldie, right?
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: But like, oh yeah, cross right?
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Well, national yeah, yeah,
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and we're dancing at one point, like a slow dancing.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: We both hovered around the two people dancing with other people that we wanted to be at the dance with.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how I feel about these quarterbacks.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like you're just kind of living in the reality of not getting exactly what you want or need.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: The problem with, like,
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: If you're Michael of Floor, or you're Jeff Haffley, and you come to these Arizona Miami, and you've taken over these teams with these quarterbacks, they feel more like a problem than a solution.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: So how do you voice the Tua with the salary part of it, the injury, history, the fact that you're right, he probably capped out under Mike McDaniels, as well as he ever will.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: And the Kyla Murray, I'm not sure he wants to do this with his life.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, we're so like, I guess the answer would be a team like the jets, not to always throw the jets into this, but like they clearly need someone to get them from here to the end of next season.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: They also seem like they don't want anyone too good because they want to draft someone next.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's like we're kind of taking a year off without telling you that, but we aren't telling you.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: But we're like who wants to take on either one of these projects.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: They feel like projects that could get coaches fired.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: 100%.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think the jets are perfect for Kyler, but before that I would remiss if I didn't say that my greatest homecoming moment was I was breaking up with my like first big girlfriend, but we decided like, hey we already bought the dresses and the ties and the bootnears, so like let's just kind of
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: you know, let's just make this as good as it can be.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then I guess she was having second thoughts about possibly not breaking up because this was her idea.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then we were dancing.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I we both it was like a fast song and then we both kind of dipped heads in at the same moment.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I had butted her like right in the forehead, but it was like it was like concussion level.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: hard.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like she was dizzy.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: She had a headache.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: We had to go home.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: And it was kind of like I think it was like shout or something.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, hey, and then you just kind of like you're rolling head by body in there.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: She was just the perfect height where I think I was like dipping down and you know, I was lost in the dance and it was No, you dropped a hammer.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: You dropped a hammer.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this one.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's not on like two.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that's not funny.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: But like it's like we're dealing with people that are susceptible to what's the durability issue here for the dancer of the girl, you know, or to a
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of it to a parallels there.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if she ever got off the the Schneiden and was able to get back on the dance floor, but Kyler is so perfect for the jets mark and I'm glad you said it because I think it works in so many ways.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: And this is how you know you're like a sick individual.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: My daughter, my baby daughter's sick.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't slept in like,
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: a week and a half and I was running on like an hour and a half of sleep last night, but it's like 1145 and I'm constructing this like this total narrative web in my mind of why the jets are going to sign Kyler Murray and I was like you need to go like this this can't replace healthy things for your body, you know, but here's why I think it works on multiple levels because the jets are I think tanking.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: right.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: They want to get one of the number one picks in the 2027 draft because it's going to be that treasure trove potentially of quarterbacks.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: What do you have to do between now and then?
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: You have to lose games, but you have to look competent as an organization, and you can't have your head coach go full Hugh Jackson 0-Dark 30 and understand that the conspiracy is a foot.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: And so
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: you have cap space.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: So you just absorbed the contract for the next two years because your quarterback in 2027 is gonna be on a rookie contract.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not a big deal, right?
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can absorb the final two years of that contract.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's not an issue.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: Aaron Glenn thinks that he got the best quarterback on the market and that the team is invested in him.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he's not going to go out there every day with a tin foil hat on and talk to the media like a complete weirdo.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: And at least you hope so.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: And the terms of the contract are essentially such that Murray can be your tomato can.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: Foyble for your rookie quarterback in 2027 in training camp, right where it's like Maurice gonna be 30 at that point who knows how many games he's gonna have missed at that point he played five games last year, right?
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's gonna be injured.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna be beat up and it's one of those things where all of a sudden
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: Arch Manning comes in or whoever comes in, CJ Carr, and he heroically bests the former number one pick and camp, and then you start the season on this tailwind and everyone's like, yeah, I like, and forget you, Kyle and Murray.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: I just think it works on on every level for the chance.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's my one concern because Kyle and Murray is,
- 20:54[SPEAKER_01]: a logical punching bag for those of us that talk about quarterbacks like I get it is he there's also times when he's played like a top 10 quarterback or stretches right months in a row like and the jet it's like the jets are like laced with talent but
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: For the overall goal if we're going to fool Aaron Glenn and we're going to likely fool Kyler Murray and fool rest of everyone else on the roster and inside the building that we're quietly tanking and no one knows like is he too good?
- 21:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like do you not like do you need to get like a Davis mill or do you need to go get someone that like yeah?
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: You can install and like we're going to quietly lose 16 games.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: We're Kyler Murray quietly gets you to seven wins based off of heroics that no one inside the building with any knowledge of the future really wants
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: that's like a sentient plant candidate like you know we're trying to install like a coup government and then all of a sudden he becomes aware of his emotions and feelings and just plays like an absolute out of his mind cyborg which is always the jet's getting too talented when they need to fold the tent is so not it's unfair of the fans.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: to I think is different though because Tua is, and I think it's part of its the resency effect, right, where since his apex, where we were, I think he finished fifth in MVP voting.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_00]: He has sustained multiple head injuries.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen what he looks
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: And we've also seen which I think was sort of the big reveal what happened when he was truly physically pushed against the wall.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: And what he ended up doing was inadvertently or not, like burying Mike McDaniel and his coaching abilities at the podium and saying all this stuff about secret players, only meetings and all this stuff.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: And regardless of his intent,
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: he basically torpedoed like the last man in his corner.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think what happens there is if you're halfway, you're certainly like, I'm not dealing with this at all.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I'm either gonna trade you or you could stay home.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're another team that is either trying to reset, unless you're just outright tanking.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and, and I feel like the jets wouldn't do the dolphins the favor of taking on that contract because it's massive, right?
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, like, I don't see a fit for him at all.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's, he's one where like, Kyler, you can be like, okay, well, you know,
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: the jets make a lot of sense for a lot of reasons across the board.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe as a consolation prize for the Vikings, I don't really see him as a fit with Mike McCarthy and Pittsburgh, but there's enough teams out there.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think there'd probably nine or 10 teams that need a quarterback.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then Kyler fits with maybe four, five of those teams.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: Toa, and I want you to tell me if I'm wrong, I don't see anywhere where there's a team that's like, oh, hell yeah, this makes a lot of sense for us.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm with you.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think Tua just comes with a lot of, he's tough to sell to fans.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's just the nature of the over coverage of the league where Tua has been knocked around for years verbally and then just doesn't feel like there's, oh, I don't know what it is.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: There's something about Tua that kind of strikes me as like,
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: something's going to go wrong at some point if you bring this guy in the starter.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: I could kind of see it with Pittsburgh maybe but not really.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think Tua is to your Sam Darnold question at the top was, is it time for Tua to go somewhere and not be the starter?
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like to go
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: Kevin O'Connell Vikings led team or of the Rams and be the backup for a year or two We get out of the fray and learn.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's what a player's nature is like they don't want to sit Behind someone and not play but there is evidence that this could be the perfect thing for two I don't see him as a plug-and-play starter.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: I guess the one question I'd have
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: for like a team like the Raiders you're gonna go get Mendoza right like do you want to make sure you've got and it's not Gino Smith at this point like a veteran that you can put out there for six seven eight games and allow your rookie to come in at the right time which will always be sooner than we think but like I don't know if that's a team I put um the first overall pick on this as a starter week one like maybe there's a space in that kind of
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: or one of these other guys fits as your lead, you're out of the gate lead.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was funny because you would remember this.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: I was writing about this and I was thinking, oh well, another team could pull the Brock Osweiler and basically purchase the contract from the dolphins for a draft pick.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then I looked at the broadcast, and it seemed so like revolutionary at the time.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_00]: But they only took on like $18 million from the Texans to a has like $19 million.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Let me the cost would need to be different.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think that was like a second round pick or something you did.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they bought a second round pick for like $18 million, which makes sense.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: Or 17, whatever it was.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, to would be like you'd be buying it for like the cost of of like a small private island with with a with a with a regulated GDP, you know, yeah.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't love those islands based on what we know.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: Got to get rid of the islands.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: We don't like the islands.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I think that that's one of those where I'm like, I just don't know what you do with them.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it's funny where, I mean, I'm a lapse browns fan.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: You are are still kind of in the arena in that regard.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: But half lapsed, half lapsed.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: And you saw what happened when Deshaumaats and they were just kind of like just don't come to work anymore, you know, just like, you know, you can, you know, we just kind of don't watch here and then, you know, maybe when all this blows over, you can start showing up again, but to a, it might end up being the same way because you, you have developed a, you know,
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: personality, that's kind of whencean, at least if you ask around, it's like, okay, maybe he's like grating a little bit.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: Where if you're Jeff Hathley, it's like, I don't know, is it easier to just tell this guy to go swim laps with the wide during practice instead of being here?
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just fascinating because like a year and a half ago, we gave him 200 million dollars.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: And also, it leaves the dolphins and also the cardinals as two teams with major quarterback voids.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: Because they simply run out of patience, interest, intrigue, and romance for the guy that they have.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: And to put it bow on this section.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: it hampers their ability to go out and replace him because there's so much dead money that you just can't, I want to get rid of this person so badly but I guess it's like, I don't know what the perfect analogy would be but it's like I want to get rid of this person so badly but I cannot afford to replace him in any way so I just have to be mad at him I guess for a year like I don't know, I don't know what the solution is.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_00]: But my goal of this podcast today, Mark, was actually because you and I are prone to
- 28:14[SPEAKER_00]: We're prone to falling in love with obscure things and there doesn't need to be a reason for it and sometimes it just and maybe I'm a little more guilty of this than you you have your own pet projects and I have mine, but this next section here is called the 27 and under crowd and that includes, you know,
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: Tanner McKee, Malik Willis, Justin Fields, Tray Lance, Anthony Richardson.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: My goal for this summer is to get you to fall head over heels and love with Tanner McKee.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so, just let me know if that's something that you're into.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: And if that's something that's possible, statue-esque, Stanford-educated go-back of the Philadelphia Eagles, who has one year left on its contract.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's like a pet fascination of all Eagles fans who just
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: perpetually want to get rid of jail and hurts and can't stand him, but I'm wondering if if that's the guy that emerges from this class is like, oh, maybe we just kind of and maybe it's Ryan Fitzpatrick or I don't know what the with the late Josh McCown, I know what the late career comp is, but maybe Tanner Ricky is the one out of all of these that that ends up being halfway interesting.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: It wouldn't be hard to get me into a world of fascination.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_01]: What is he like, six, six or something like this?
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: There is.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of perfect.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it feels like Bill Walsh would reanimate to coach him again somewhere.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you could see all that.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think in this world, probably like, there's the Malik Willis project too.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: But Tanner McKee, like, my question there would be,
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: You've been more on this beat than others in the overall questioning of Jalen Hertz as the Eagles centerpiece that there are, you know, there's where there are issues inside the building, there are some outside of certainly non-believers like
- 30:07[SPEAKER_01]: to they see Tanner McKee as potentially the future versus Jalen Hertz.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: See, and that's what's like, that's why I like pressing this button because it then leads to the Jalen Hertz discussion that I love to have, and it's one of my favorite things to talk about, because if your Negos van just calmed down for a second, and I'm not saying that he's not good.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's wonderful.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's a great quarterback, right?
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: I would say he's a top
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's entrenched is like a top 13 quarterback for me and I think that's fine.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's fair to say.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: But this offensive coordinator's search.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: Think about it for a second.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: You, it took you forever to find a candidate that wanted to take this job, right?
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: And you still have, say, Juan Barclay, you may or may not have AJ Brown, you still have Devonta Smith, you still have Vic Fangeo on the other side, call him plays for the defense.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: You still have Nick Seriani, who, depending on who you are, I think is a good head coach, some people think he's not.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: But how,
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: how did it become this hard to hire an offensive coordinator if the quarterback is not a big part of the problem?
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: Does that make sense?
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like is that because I think that Jalen hurts likes a specific brand of offense that fits his skill set and his comfort level that is also very hard to dress up in a way that can you can weaponize against other teams?
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's my theory.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_00]: But like
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: doesn't that speak to how difficult it is to hire an offensive coordinator?
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is a super old winning quarterback.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: Any other team, like someone left Kyle Shanahan, for example, to go coach Sam Darnell in Seattle, Brian Flurries, their new offensive coordinator, right?
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: I just think it's one of those situations where this has to be kind of the revelation of the fact that maybe hurts is a little bit of the problem.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: and whether Tanner McKee goes somewhere or not, I think is an important little string to pull.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that's it's evidence of what they're truly feeling.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: You're absolutely right.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's that's an interesting like POV in way to look at it from that from that angle and what they think about the plugged in back up there.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's funny because we talked to James Palmer last week on our show and he echoed what you're saying to some degree that like this Eagle search for coaches for the offensive play caller which has been like year after year after year obviously which is kind of strange for a team that's been so successful.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: But that it's, I asked, is it a Nick Seriani issue because that seems like Neon, the nose, like, is it getting along with Seriani or his role calling the plays or the Seriani experience, the personality, all the business that comes with it, and Philly, and James said what you're saying to, and what you've been saying, which is, it's a jail and hurts thing, which I think would
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: But you're right, if that's the key, if that's one of the key issues, it's like, well, then the Eagles, if anything, had been the team that had been unafraid.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: How we roseman on down to just make big bull changes.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: They moved on from once.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a bit of a tragedy comedy of a career there, after we went to Nick Fools and stuff.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: But would they just as openly and boldly consider a move on from Jalen Hertz?
- 33:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, well, if all of this is building and it's true, and there's a ceiling in their mind for Jalen Hertz, like, why settle for that?
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: Or why continue with that at some point, you make the change?
- 33:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, Tanner McKee is better than some of the guys on this 27 and underlist, because we don't know he sucks.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: We know some of these other guys just kind of,
- 34:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think he fits the ingredients.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: The last thing I'll say on that is that hurts, like I was looking in this up last night.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: Again, it like one o'clock in the morning.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching curling.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: My family is going like, Apeship for curling.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: I had a feeling that the or family would be into the winter Olympics.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: They're not here too, but yes.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and so it's watching curling.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, just a random aside like so it's it's a sport of honor.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so there was a discrepancy yesterday where like a lady just fell into, he just fell into the thing the big rock that they're supposed to be
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: Because it's male and female, right?
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's often teen, there's split, there's mixed.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's male and there's female.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: So this was all female.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: And the one woman just falls into the rock.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: She trips over the ice and falls into it.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: And there's no referee.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's so wild.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so they're just talking about it.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's two people speaking completely different languages that are just like, well, I mean, what you're doing is not really okay.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, well, hold on.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, holy shit, there's just no,
- 35:08[SPEAKER_00]: official and this is like the greatest thing ever it's like it's like having a dispute in like a school yard flag football game there's there's no adult and there's no one that's going to come in and save them and if you're like the woman from Latvia you have to potentially cost your country a gold medal because you're a nice person and you're afraid of conflict that's insane that's why it's called Spatlana I know you touch the rock I know you did Spatlana
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: but wasn't there also like a guy there was a there was a shouting match yes in curling over the weekend if i'm not mistaken where the guy nudged the whooped it yeah you know i meant to do that yeah you can't do that you booped it with his finger but again it's a sport of honor and so there's no replay right you don't go to you know uh uh like
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: Why am I blanking on every single official now like Sean Hawkely like he doesn't come in and and be like I'm going to take over a suck all the oxygen out of the room and go to replay it's like no you have to fight with this other guy and in some countries like I think of the Philippines
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like getting a gold medal, you get like $250,000.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like life altering money and you're a national hero.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so you got to sit there and be like, yeah, there's no fucking way you can poop this thing.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and you have to fight with this guy and like bend, arguing is part of it.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that that's like, I don't know.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I'm like way into the winter Olympics right now.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Makes football seem so dumb.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think these sports are like these sports are there's a hushed Combed some of these just being just someone just ski jumping through the air and the way I got yeah, I watched the entirety of Nordic
- 36:44[SPEAKER_00]: women's 10k cross country skiing and it was like 56 minutes of me just in wrapped attention watching these people ski uphill and I don't know there's you don't need a Burger King commercial every eight minutes to success down the sports.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah there's no chilies out of just bouncing fatty hot wings but um
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: So in this group.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yes.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's where I was going with this.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching curling and I was looking this up last night.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Hertz, I think has Russell Wilson syndrome.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: And what I mean by that is that Russell won a Super Bowl and then decided or was convinced
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: that he could play a different style of football than the one that brought him to the Super Bowl.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: And if you look at Jalen Hertz's carries per season, they are falling off a cliff.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think he went from like 150 to like 105 last year.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: His first downs by carry are in half from his peak in like 2022, 2022, 2023.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: But the first downs by passing are not doubling.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: And so if you're the Eagles like how he roseman sees this and how do you not
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: just think like, okay, am I gonna make this a camp competition?
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I'm quite there yet, but it's like am I gonna let Tanner McKee go or am I gonna keep him as part of this package to eventually be the solution to the problem?
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: But we have other guys on this list.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_00]: Malik Willis in particular is the one
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's texting with an agent yesterday who felt like he's going to go for about 25 million dollars a year.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: 25 to 30 million dollars.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: So like more than Justin feel or it's like Justin feels plus right exactly.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like Justin feels plus is that something that you're remotely interested in.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I really think it's the fit in the team because what is your goal?
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've got like more teams quietly tanking than ever.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: So again, it's Malik Willis, like if you put Malik Willis on like the Browns and he goes off, like is he your starter?
- 38:38[SPEAKER_01]: Do you view him as the answer off a very small but promising sample size with the Packers at least?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: Or there's the question,
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: of, and it's a basic question, but like, wait a minute, he did that with La Flore and the Packers, like, what does he look like on an incompetent team that's more disorganized, or like a team that needs a quarterback has a big issue.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: So they probably got other issues, right?
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if you plug Malik Willis into a bad cardinals team or fill in the blank, like,
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: What is the guarantee or the or the assurance that he's going to look like he did in Green Bay like that felt to me very much like a scheme Planning in genius fit based on the coaching like what if he goes somewhere where you don't have that offensive mind like it just feels like that's a lot of money For an unabid of an unknown although he's probably the most probably the most promising person on paper in this group of 27 and under
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think Malik is interesting if you can put together all the other pieces.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the same thing about, and everyone's talking about, well, why doesn't why don't you trade for Mac Jones?
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you trade for Mac Jones?
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: Because Mac Jones isn't bringing Christian McAfrey and Kyle Shanahan with him.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know if Malik Willis is bringing Matt LaFlor, Christian Watson, Romeo Dobbs, like that entire offense, and Adam Stinovich in the run game, and the offensive line when the offensive line is healthy.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not saying that he's a product of that.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: But exclusively, but you're going to have to have a lot of infrastructure in place to essentially build that out for him wherever he goes.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to have to have a dynamite running game that is intricately tied into the past.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: And so Willis to me is one of those guys that it's like, it works if you have everything else.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think Cleveland is an interesting case study in that.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think they have a lot of the pieces and they have Todd Munkin who can envision it.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a lot of places where, again, like,
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it was Jeremy Faller from ESPN said like the top two teams that are in on on on on Malik Willis are the dolphins and the cardinals, which brings us back to our initial point, which is Do they have another $25 million to spend on the quarterback when they can't I think with Murray like the like in Arizona I bet you could make that work and like I guess the question Because it worked for Matt LaFlor does it work for Mike LaFlor
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like is it that easy?
- 40:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's that.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'm my brother and I are good at very different things.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I mean, we, I get that these guys are coaches and offensive coaches.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: But like, do you just plug them into Arizona and Michael a floor?
- 41:05[SPEAKER_01]: Does what Matt LaFlor did?
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of other reasons it worked in Green Bay.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, like, I use this example all the time.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, my sister is a mathematics major, a division one athlete, and like, straight A student.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's like saying, like, oh, well, if you hire conners, you know, if you hire Emily's my sister's name, if you hire Emily's brother, like, it'll be like having Emily.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, no, man, like, you know,
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to be like that at all, you know, it's going to be like all the adults left the room and you're just left with the giant human baby and and we're trying to figure all this shit out.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think that's the great like fallacy of like, oh yeah, it's he's kind of like Matt with flirts like I don't know that's be true.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: Always on the first time head coach too.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean it's just there's a lot of there's a lot of variable there.
- 42:00[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to skip ahead so that the veterans to me are just like I mean I think here's what's going to happen.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be waiting on Kirk Cousins who's going to be released like on the second or third day of the league year and we're going to be waiting on Aaron Rogers and this is just going to be such a tiresome conversation that we're going to have ad nauseam because it's going to be these break-ins and it's going to be like well actually like Kirk Cousins has a $20 million offer for Amazon and it's like maybe he does I don't know
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's just all negotiating through the media and these guys are going to drag it out because they don't want to go to mandatory mini camp and we're going to have to Aaron Rogers is going to go on pat mac a few six times and talk about bony there when we all just want to hear Sound exhausted with the overseas and already so that's a good.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good part of the fans.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good side But I want to get to the part that I think is fun and we're going to close out with this your GM
- 42:52[SPEAKER_00]: And you, like me, are just kind of in-cut the shit mode, right?
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't want to pay $25 million for Malik Willis.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: The Eagles aren't going to trade me Tanner McKee.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going for two or a Kyler.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: Who are you calling?
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's an active, entrenched quarterback somewhere.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think Todd McShay said a couple of weeks ago that he thinks this is going to be another offseason of big quarterback movement and not necessarily like the quarterbacks that we don't expect.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: So who are you calling if you're a GM just to be like, hey, I know he's your quarterback, but like what would it take for that not to be the case?
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe no one but yeah, but because I think it's it's also that kind of market where it's like And I should say this to like my homes Josh Allen like we're Lamar Jackson.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: We're taking them off the table.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: We're not yeah, we're not we're looking at like a fair target like yeah, I would be intrigued If I were the right type of team, I'd make a call about CJ Strauss same
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: like I just don't buy that he's regressing entirely and like if we're going to talk about these quarterbacks of reclamation projects like he's been through a lot of transition.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_01]: There's been new coordinator after new coordinator.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's had offensive line problems.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen awesome ceiling and we've seen concerning floor, right?
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: But like I would call about CJ Stroud because contractually I just I don't know.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they'd be willing to
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: and you will play off team and then what you're going to Davis Mills.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'd almost maybe call about Davis Mills.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_00]: And Davis Mills was three-nose a starter last year.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think over that period of time it was interesting when he was the starter for that 2021-2022 stretch in Houston.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_00]: That team was designed to lose games or had Coach was David Colley and then Lovey Smith, right?
- 44:46[SPEAKER_00]: But his EPA per play for Dropack was the exact same.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: Almost identical to Sam Darnold in his last year with the Jets and his first years of Panthers.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: So to say that there's not potential there, I think, is a fallacy.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: And that's an interesting one too, because Houston built the bones of this team by getting rid of Deshawn Watson.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think they would get the same return for CJ Straud.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: But you're in a situation now where you have to pay Will Anderson, top of market rate for the Najrusher.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: DeMika Ryan's is going to want a generational defense more than he's going to care about a generational offense.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to think he can make it work no matter what.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_00]: and strout is the one that I just keep coming back to me and gravy talked about this before the season started.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_00]: I've been bangin' the drum during the season, now that he throws a bunch of picks in the playoff game and you come into this situation where he sits down at the negotiating table and says I need $60 million here.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_00]: I can't do it if I'm the Texans like I can't I can't good faith do that and I wonder if someone is just like, hey We'll give you first round pick for him and we'll and we'll see because this this year's class kind of sucks Behind Fernando Mendoza like I think that is the ultimate fascination.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think so too and like that there front office
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: has been willing to do surprising unusual things and you mentioned like the other players they have to pay that's going to be a situation when you're paying other stars on the team and not your quarterback that's not typically how this goes like you take care of your quarterback you take care of everyone else but in that order and like if he's not getting if they're if they're
- 46:20[SPEAKER_01]: If there's a seed in their mind to see what they've seen over this past season and say, we might be willing to make a change, a surprising change, they would listen to Stroud maybe.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what team would do that.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's the question.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: All it takes is one with picks.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: Rise it up.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: Is it like a first round pick?
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's like in my mind and I'll leave you guys with this, right?
- 46:48[SPEAKER_00]: If Aaron Rogers decides not to come back to Pittsburgh, you have a Steelers team with a late first round draft pick, and this perpetual issue of not being good enough to trade up for a top flight rookie and never being bad enough to be in that situation.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're the Steelers and your Mike McCarthy, is that the phone call that you make?
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: where CJ Stroud is a classic dropback passer with just enough athleticism sprinkled in there that could make it work for me.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, man, I'm like, that's the team where I'm like, I wonder if they do it.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: And he's never had a mic McCarthy overseen his career.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's been a lot of transition and Bobby's slow ex to the end.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_01]: So that kind of fits.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it would get Aaron Rogers out of our
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I'm trying not to be, you know, I'm trying not to be that guy, that's like good, the uniform of season, but Raju's just has a special way of doing it and it's not like,
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: I've been accused of being like, oh, well, you're politics don't align, so you're bothered by this is nothing to do with anything that I believe or that Aaron Rogers believes.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's the, like, if my hero in life acted like this, I would dismiss him, you know what?
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's just the, like, I'm going to keep coming out here and just like pying at you like a baby kitten for attention.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_00]: but then when you turn around and look at me be like, why is everyone looking at me?
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's very catlike and like we don't like it's it's just elongating what is already a tedious drama anti-drama like where Aaron Rodgers goes to the Steelers or he doesn't like I just need to know the answer now.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want it to be played out in 48 chapters and a bunch of Heming and High and Over into deep-maid June and July.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_01]: No thank you.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Mortensen, the late great Chris Mortensen once, he got the tip famously that Peyton Manning was going to retire and then Peyton Manning called him and said, hey, can you just sit on this for like two days?
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to be in NFL quarterback for two more days.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: If Aaron Rogers quietly facts us all in January 10 and was just like, hey, I'm going to come back, but I'm going to go on pat Mac a fee 31 times between now and then and just make it a big show.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: I would be totally fine with that.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I would keep it a secret, right?
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: But unfortunately that's just not how any of this works You can't you can't get near him.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: He'll tell you to get lost.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, we're dragged into into the mire as always Mark you are the best We're gonna be We're going right from here and then we're gonna change venues and we're gonna we're gonna start pod and over there.
