- 0:00Speaker 1: I don't know what it feels like to get mulled
- 0:01Speaker 1: by a bear. It's one more thing.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm strong and getty, one more.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Unpleasant before we get to the modern pain sharks. Based
- 0:15Speaker 1: off of my motorcycle wreck of the other day, I
- 0:17Speaker 1: wanted to mention, so I tweeted out a picture of
- 0:21Speaker 1: me with hair the other day because it's come up
- 0:26Speaker 1: on the show many times over the years, and a
- 0:28Speaker 1: lot of people had wondered. So I just tweeted that picture.
- 0:32Speaker 1: So it's from I'm twenty four, I guess in that picture,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and anyway, I had hair, So there you go. And
- 0:40Speaker 1: they got I don't know, one hundred and fifty comments
- 0:43Speaker 1: or something like that. And what was interesting to me,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and luckily I'm at the age where this is only
- 0:52Speaker 1: like interesting as a sociological exercise as opposed to anything else,
- 0:58Speaker 1: is the number of people that have to bring their
- 1:02Speaker 1: hate to these things, hmm, really hateful comments. And it
- 1:12Speaker 1: bothers me for just mankind. It just the world is
- 1:16Speaker 1: like that. That's what the only level that bothers me
- 1:19Speaker 1: on that, you know, my kids. Everyone has to live
- 1:23Speaker 1: in a world where there are certain percentage of people
- 1:26Speaker 1: that are just so hateful and.
- 1:29Speaker 2: What drives that well, And you have to add into
- 1:32Speaker 2: that the trolls who don't mean what they say but
- 1:35Speaker 2: merely mean to pulvolk, which is a different sort of miserable.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that is. Yeah, even if it's just trolling,
- 1:42Speaker 1: it's exactly the same thing. We've worked with a few
- 1:45Speaker 1: trolls that just enjoy going on to social media and
- 1:49Speaker 1: saying really horrible things about people, hoping to get a
- 1:52Speaker 1: reaction out of them, which might be even worse than
- 1:54Speaker 1: the people who legitimately mean it. You're shaking your head. No,
- 1:57Speaker 1: that's just a weird psyche to have, and it's it's unhealthy.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And like I said, this only bothers me from a
- 2:04Speaker 1: I wish so many people weren't like that standpoint. It
- 2:07Speaker 1: makes the world a worse place. The uh so, your
- 2:13Speaker 1: day is going to be better if you troll somebody
- 2:18Speaker 1: like I don't know. You hear a new album and
- 2:20Speaker 1: you and it they posted on social media and you
- 2:22Speaker 1: say that's the garbage. My eight year old plays better
- 2:25Speaker 1: than that. Somehow that made your day better. It's very pathetic.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I mean, it's such an obvious elevating yourself by stomping
- 2:36Speaker 2: others down over something stupid, which is clearly if you
- 2:40Speaker 2: have any sense of matter of opinion anyway, right, I mean,
- 2:42Speaker 2: that's that's that's that's almost seeing an x ray of
- 2:45Speaker 2: their their intellect right there. And it's like the old
- 2:50Speaker 2: joke they x rayed my head and found nothing.
- 2:54Speaker 3: So I don't know any quote trolls. But what were
- 2:58Speaker 3: these people like? And they're normal life.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I mean about what you'd expect, not jerks always, but
- 3:05Speaker 1: sad people. Not jerks, but sad, unhappy people, really unhappy
- 3:10Speaker 1: with how their lives have turned out. And I guess
- 3:13Speaker 1: this is a way to fight back against them, like
- 3:15Speaker 1: a misery loves company thing. I don't know.
- 3:18Speaker 4: They would constantly compare themselves with other people, and if
- 3:21Speaker 4: they didn't measure up, then they would troll.
- 3:23Speaker 1: That's why I looked at it interesting.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And there's a certain sort of person and a certain
- 3:29Speaker 2: sort of hurt that people who feel like they've been
- 3:33Speaker 2: hurt by life want to hurt others. Yeah, take out
- 3:36Speaker 2: their their unhappiness on others.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Right, so would you? Yeah?
- 3:40Speaker 2: And I guess all sad.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I guess the reason I want to bring it up
- 3:44Speaker 1: is in I think for most of us in the
- 3:48Speaker 1: public eye. That's the way we take your trolling. That's
- 3:52Speaker 1: the way it lands. It doesn't like, oh my god,
- 3:55Speaker 1: how dare you say that? There's none of that. It's
- 3:57Speaker 1: just a wow, you are your life must really suck.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's horrible.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Generally my reaction is pity to that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, absolutely one. Whatever happened in your childhood
- 4:11Speaker 1: or your marriage now or whatever that makes you that way,
- 4:15Speaker 1: that sucks. I hope somebody can help you out of that.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I vaguely remember responding to a hateful listener email with
- 4:23Speaker 3: who hurt you?
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, that's a good one right there, And
- 4:29Speaker 1: it might go clear back to your parents as a
- 4:31Speaker 1: little kid. And you know, we all know terrible stories,
- 4:34Speaker 1: but that is what's going on there. It is, yes,
- 4:38Speaker 1: similar to like road rage. It's very rare that somebody
- 4:42Speaker 1: who engages in road rage is actually enraged about what
- 4:44Speaker 1: happened on the road right that they brought their anger
- 4:47Speaker 1: to that incident. Can you I remember once I had
- 4:51Speaker 1: a guy just tailgating me and screaming at me and everything,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and so I pulled over it on the side of
- 4:57Speaker 1: the road and he jumped out and with a with
- 4:59Speaker 1: a like.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Big jack thing in his hand. He started screaming at me.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I said, hey, whoa, whoa, what are you really angry about?
- 5:05Speaker 2: What has made you angry today? And he said you
- 5:07Speaker 2: and he charged at me. So I shot him dead
- 5:09Speaker 2: right there on the pavement, led out on the pavement. Yep, Yeah, so.
- 5:16Speaker 4: I took a turn.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Oh, I knew I had you going, Katie.
- 5:21Speaker 4: I was so into that story.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So if you're if you're going through YouTube videos and
- 5:29Speaker 1: you come across like a fifteen year old play in
- 5:31Speaker 1: the flute and you just have this, you can't stop
- 5:34Speaker 1: yourself from saying, boy, don't give up. You know what
- 5:37Speaker 1: other other pursuits are you suck at that?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Or something? Really?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Honest to God, I'm trying to do this as a
- 5:44Speaker 1: public service. Think about where that comes from, and like
- 5:50Speaker 1: I don't know, religion, therapy, somehow to let go whatever,
- 5:55Speaker 1: try to figure out where the pain comes from. Maybe
- 5:58Speaker 1: you'll be happier, you really will.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Can't imagine feeling that impotent in the world, that that's
- 6:08Speaker 2: the only effect you're gonna have, and that's the effect
- 6:10Speaker 2: you want to have. Maybe I can hurt the feelings
- 6:13Speaker 2: of a fifteen year old floutest all.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's a nice feeling. By anyway, that's enough
- 6:19Speaker 1: of that. But it makes me, it actually makes me
- 6:23Speaker 1: sad for mankind that there are so many people in
- 6:25Speaker 1: that kind of pain and so miserable they're lives.
- 6:28Speaker 2: That's not good.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So I had a motorcycle wreck last week and it
- 6:33Speaker 1: hurt like the but Jesus my knee and my shoulder
- 6:36Speaker 1: in particular. And then I had the thing when you
- 6:38Speaker 1: get into the doctor's office the er where they said, uh,
- 6:42Speaker 1: what's your scale on what's your pain? On a scale
- 6:44Speaker 1: of one to ten. I've always hated that question because
- 6:46Speaker 1: I haven't got the slightest idea what that means. This
- 6:48Speaker 1: is the first time though the person has ever said
- 6:51Speaker 1: ten being the worst pain you've ever felt. Okay, that
- 6:54Speaker 1: helps me in that, Okay, I've got a standard to
- 6:58Speaker 1: try to work from without that, Like, I don't know,
- 7:02Speaker 1: I don't know if my pain tolerance is higher than
- 7:04Speaker 1: most people's or lower than most people's or the same.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I don't have any idea. But if you're going to
- 7:08Speaker 1: go with the worst pain I've ever felt, it gives
- 7:10Speaker 1: me a way to gauge it. But as Joe pointed
- 7:13Speaker 1: out last week, what if I've never had anything bad
- 7:15Speaker 1: to me. Like prior to three years ago when I
- 7:17Speaker 1: had my gallbladder attack, I would have had a different
- 7:21Speaker 1: answer than I have now.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Mm hmmm, yeah, a different scale.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Like if you hadn't had your twisticle. Katie probably has
- 7:30Speaker 1: never heard the twistical story, but you you'd have a
- 7:32Speaker 1: different pain scale.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I guess torsion of the spermatic tube. You don't want it,
- 7:37Speaker 2: She's probably not likely to have it.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think I'm able to get that.
- 7:41Speaker 2: But that sounds of mule. You wouldn't wish it on
- 7:44Speaker 2: al Qaeda. But yeah, yeah, so now I have something
- 7:47Speaker 2: to kind of gauge it against.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But if you hadn't had that, so so, since you've
- 7:52Speaker 1: had that, you might rate a pretty bad pain of five.
- 7:55Speaker 1: If that hadn't happened to you might rate that pretty
- 7:57Speaker 1: bad pain in eight. And then what do they do
- 8:00Speaker 1: with that information?
- 8:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well there are better scales. Well that's why, silly
- 8:05Speaker 2: thing for them to say.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But ill the last time I was in the hospital,
- 8:08Speaker 3: the scale was the scale one to ten, and it
- 8:09Speaker 3: was just dislike they had different smiley faces, yell, different emojis.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I'm like, all that helps, that's what they do for kids. Yeah,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I don't know. I didn't. I never I never know
- 8:19Speaker 1: how to answer that question. And I want to be
- 8:20Speaker 1: helpful to my own recovery. But I don't know what
- 8:23Speaker 1: they're looking for anyway, Katie, I think you put this
- 8:26Speaker 1: one out, didn't you, Gady the improved pain Scale. I
- 8:29Speaker 1: like this one. Uh. One, it might be a nich
- 8:34Speaker 1: that's pretty good. Two, I just need a band aid.
- 8:38Speaker 1: That's a good one. Three it's kind of annoying. Four
- 8:43Speaker 1: This is concerning, but I can still work. Five on
- 8:47Speaker 1: the pain scale would be bees. That's just a bees
- 8:53Speaker 1: is a question mark. Six is bees exclamation point. So
- 8:57Speaker 1: five is.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Bees, six is bees.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Save it. On the pain scale, I can't stop crying.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Eight I can't move. It hurts so bad. It's about
- 9:10Speaker 1: where I was on Thursday when I was at the er.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Nine mauled by a bear or ninjas.
- 9:17Speaker 2: The animal. Yeah, of course, who among us hasn't well,
- 9:21Speaker 2: you know.
- 9:22Speaker 1: God, Ninja bears attack you. It's rough, and then ten unconscious?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm maulted by a bear or ninjas, bees bees.
- 9:35Speaker 2: We got this from Joe, Joe and Dayton. I believe
- 9:38Speaker 2: this is the actual VA pain rating scale cool, which
- 9:43Speaker 2: is good. It's what you've been asking for.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Number one zero is no pain obviously, one hardly noticed pain.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Two notice pain does not interfere with activities. Three sometimes
- 9:53Speaker 2: distracts me. Four distracts me, can do usual activities, five
- 9:58Speaker 2: interrupt some activities. Six would ignore avoid usual activities. Seven
- 10:03Speaker 2: focus of attention prevents doing daily activities. Eight awful, hard
- 10:08Speaker 2: to do anything. Nine can't bear the pain, unable to
- 10:11Speaker 2: do anything, and ten as bad as it could be,
- 10:13Speaker 2: nothing else matters.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Well, that's great. Why don't they hit me with that
- 10:17Speaker 1: every time I've ever been to the ere?
- 10:19Speaker 2: That's fantastic instead of the frownie face or the really
- 10:23Speaker 2: frowny face or the really really really frowny face. So
- 10:28Speaker 2: what should be the standard?
- 10:29Speaker 1: Right there?
- 10:30Speaker 2: That what you just read?
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that is really great? What was seven?
- 10:33Speaker 2: Again? Focus of attention prevents doing daily activities?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's where I was on Thursday when I was
- 10:39Speaker 1: at the er, certainly, And yeah, but yeah, that's that's
- 10:44Speaker 1: a great skill. And that way you both that way
- 10:47Speaker 1: you both know they know and you know what you're
- 10:49Speaker 1: talking about, and you know you go from there on
- 10:53Speaker 1: what kind of pain medication you'd need or whatever.
- 10:55Speaker 2: There might be a wuss, but at least this is
- 10:57Speaker 2: much more helpful.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I suppose.
- 11:00Speaker 2: That follow up questions too. You want to hear though, sure.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Circle the number that describes how during the past twenty
- 11:06Speaker 2: four hours pain is interfered with your usual activity, does
- 11:10Speaker 2: not interfere or completely interferes. Then circle the number that
- 11:14Speaker 2: describes how during the past twenty four hours pain is
- 11:16Speaker 2: interfered with your sleep. One to ten.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm pretty high on that one. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, jeez.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Circle the number that describes how during the past twenty
- 11:26Speaker 2: four hours pain has affected your mood. Ah, and then
- 11:30Speaker 2: that has contributed to your stress.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and my shoulder and knee. You are not allowing
- 11:36Speaker 1: me to sleep hardly at all.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 1: But the way, okay, we'll get that out to every
- 11:41Speaker 1: hospital in America, so you don't just give the overall
- 11:44Speaker 1: and it's usually nice person, but usually somebody it's just
- 11:47Speaker 1: kind of in a very I'm barely paying attention. I
- 11:49Speaker 1: got to write down a number. It's my job sort
- 11:51Speaker 1: of way. What's your pain on a scale of one
- 11:53Speaker 1: to ten? I don't know what does that mean. I
- 11:56Speaker 1: just need to put down a number. Okay, Well, You're
- 11:58Speaker 1: either going to give me morphine or nothing based on
- 12:00Speaker 1: what I tell you. So it seems sort of important.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Scale of one to ten, alright, alright, alright, twelve, it's
- 12:08Speaker 2: gotta be between one and ten. Alright, alright, d just
- 12:12Speaker 2: mess with them all of the above. Yeah, all right.
- 12:18Speaker 4: I like going to the doctor and say it feels
- 12:20Speaker 4: like I got kicked by a ninja. I think that's
- 12:22Speaker 4: more fun. Well, I guess that's it.
