- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Is Tamara here?
- 0:13Welcome to This Very Scary Movie, The podcast where we talk
- 0:15about the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd, and all of
- 0:18our favorite. And least favorite?
- 0:20Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:22movie rightfully has its fan base even.
- 0:24If we don't always get. It my name is Travis.
- 0:27And happy birthday, Travis. Thank you.
- 0:29Yeah, this is my birthday pic for the the show this month, and
- 0:33I went with the strangers, as you can tell by clicking on this
- 0:36episode. So yeah, I guess we're going to
- 0:40get into that. I guess we are.
- 0:42I like how you did that opening as deadpan as she does in the
- 0:46movie. Well yeah, do I half ass things?
- 0:50No, but. I put my whole ass into
- 0:52everything I do. Yeah, you sure do.
- 0:56OK, so yeah, let's let's just get into it.
- 0:59Yeah. So like, we have our polls,
- 1:01which we did a poll for Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the
- 1:05beginning last week, and we just asked everybody, did you need
- 1:10the Oh, fuck, I typed the question wrong.
- 1:13I said, did you need the original story?
- 1:18Origin is what I meant there. And 11% say, yeah, they needed
- 1:22it. And 89% say, Nah, they didn't
- 1:24need it. Listen, I found some of my
- 1:26people last night. Shout out to Johnny of the
- 1:31Patreon. Johnny.
- 1:32Also agrees that the beginning hits a little bit harder than
- 1:37the remake. Yeah, you know, and I'm happy
- 1:40that you guys have that, honestly, like, you know, it's,
- 1:42it's good for the people that want it.
- 1:44I just, I didn't need it. I'm I don't hate the movie
- 1:47though. I guess it's just some of the
- 1:50shit in there just wasn't necessary and it's still OK.
- 1:54Obviously I'm saying no, I don't need that shit.
- 1:56OK, so put that all the way. Let's get into The Strangers.
- 2:00How about it? How about it?
- 2:02How about it? So the Strangers released May
- 2:0530th, 2008. We watched it on our Blu-ray.
- 2:09Blu-ray. The unrated version yet again,
- 2:12people. Unrated.
- 2:14I don't even know the differences between this one.
- 2:16I didn't even look it up this. Time noticeable differences.
- 2:22If you want to watch it here now in August, you can watch it on
- 2:25Prime, but if you don't have that, you can rent it on Amazon,
- 2:30Apple, YouTube. Give Jeff Bezos your money
- 2:33either way, apparently. If you don't want to do that,
- 2:35give it to these other super chill people like the Apple,
- 2:39YouTube and I don't know, Fandango.
- 2:41You guys might be cool. I don't know.
- 2:43I don't know what you're all's dealings are I?
- 2:44Don't know enough about Fandango to say one word or the other.
- 2:47So you have options. Written and directed by Brian
- 2:51Bertino. Music by Toman Dandy.
- 2:54That's a fun name. All lowercase, one word.
- 2:57OK, so that's a stage. Name.
- 2:59Yeah, definitely. OK.
- 3:00Special effects makeup. William Parcel or Purcell?
- 3:04Starring Scott Speedman No. Hold on, I need to go back to
- 3:08that. It can't be Parcel or Purcell.
- 3:10It's Purcell. OK?
- 3:12I fucked it up the first time, OK?
- 3:14I'm leaving all of this. OK, fair enough.
- 3:17All right, Starring Scott Speedman, you have to say it
- 3:19really fast because. Yeah, this is speeding, yeah.
- 3:22As James with Tyler as Kristen, Jim Award as dollface, Kip Weeks
- 3:28as men in mask who I always refer to as bag face or bag
- 3:32head. Yeah, I always put bag head,
- 3:34Yeah. Or sometimes I just wrote man in
- 3:36all caps yeah. Yeah, that works too.
- 3:39Laura Margolis as pin up Girl and Glenn Howerton, the Golden
- 3:44God himself as Mike. Listen, In 2008, he hadn't even
- 3:48begun to peek. He hadn't yet.
- 3:50No. This is prime Dennis Reynolds
- 3:52right here, too. He was.
- 3:54So normal. I overheard him in the behind
- 3:56the scenes stuff you were watching.
- 3:57He was so normal sounding. He did the most Dennis thing
- 4:00ever. He was talking about, like, I
- 4:02don't want the killers to get caught because, like, I just,
- 4:04you know, I like the idea of them going out there and
- 4:06continuing killing. Like, that's Dennis.
- 4:08Yeah. Because of the implication.
- 4:09Yeah. I was trying to figure out
- 4:11which. This is 2008, so this is like
- 4:13Season 3. It's Always Sunny right here.
- 4:15So. Yeah, OK, that's it for the
- 4:18cast. We got a small cast for this
- 4:19one. All right, time for our favorite
- 4:21game on the show. Budget or bugded?
- 4:25I feel like this is bugded. It barely meets it.
- 4:29It's not $1,000,000. That is so much more than I
- 4:31expected. I know I didn't expect this to
- 4:33be a $9 million production, but here we are.
- 4:36Opening Box office 20 million Worldwide Gross 82,000,000 IMDb
- 4:41score 6.1 Wow. That's a little rude.
- 4:45I'm a little bit shocked myself, honestly.
- 4:47That's when we're I don't almost with it being that right there.
- 4:52I would maybe expect Pray at Night to maybe be higher because
- 4:56I know a lot of people like that movie.
- 4:58I'm going to go take a peek. I'm not going to tell you what
- 5:01pray at night is OK, but I'm going to just do a little peak
- 5:05seas. I think we can all say
- 5:08confidently that Chapter 1 is going to be below both of them.
- 5:12Oh no, pray at night is lower. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 5:16Is it in the facts? I'm.
- 5:17Not gonna tell you no. OK.
- 5:20That's not what we're doing here, which I do think that we
- 5:24actually did cover it for a Patreon bonus episode after we
- 5:27we were talking about Chapter 1, but we looked up the scores for.
- 5:32Oh yeah, I think 2:00. 1008 and 3:00 at night.
- 5:34I think you're right. We did.
- 5:36OK so I have 3 movies from 2008. I have a theme.
- 5:40OK OK. It's low body count, high
- 5:43stress. Oh, oh, OK, OK.
- 5:46So movie #1 you, I know you will agree with me, it's Eden Lake.
- 5:50Oh, I knew you were going to say that.
- 5:52That was this year, too. Yeah.
- 5:54What collectively traumatized us in 2008.
- 5:58Oh my God. Like I I'm looking at the list
- 6:01of 2008 horror movies and it's stacked.
- 6:03It's got oh. My God, what was happening to us
- 6:06as a society? Was that the recession?
- 6:11Maybe no. I feel like our lives have been
- 6:13in constant recession. So that's true.
- 6:15It all started early. We've been pinpointed on just
- 6:172008. I think that's like the
- 6:18downtown. That was that was a housing
- 6:20crisis moment, right I. Think it was around that time.
- 6:23Not that we would have been cognizant of it, but.
- 6:25I, you know, like I remember, like hearing people mention it,
- 6:28but as a kid, I'm like, fuck that.
- 6:30I don't give a shit about that. Oh young Travis.
- 6:35OK so Emeleek came out September 12th, 2008.
- 6:39Worldwide gross of 3.9 million. I don't have a budget and an
- 6:43IMDb score of 6.7. I still have not watched it
- 6:47again since we covered it on the show.
- 6:50It's it's so stressful to me. Yeah.
- 6:52It's it's a pretty fucking stressful.
- 6:54It's the most stressful of the movies I have here for sure.
- 6:57You have pictures of me watching that for the show and I'm like
- 7:02twisted into a pretzel because I like, I can even take notes.
- 7:04I was just so uncomfortable, the whole.
- 7:06Time, yeah, if you haven't seen it, check it out.
- 7:09Maybe. I don't know if you're into
- 7:11being like super stressed out, for sure.
- 7:13Movie #2 I don't personally I agree with this but I know a lot
- 7:17of people feel this way. Lake Mungo.
- 7:20We we are both in the camp that Lake Mungo's night that it's not
- 7:24the bee's knees people. It's not the scariest fucking
- 7:27movie out there. It's not all that and a bag of
- 7:29chips. No, it's not the greatest thing
- 7:31since sliced bread. Thank you.
- 7:33Thank you for backing me up here.
- 7:34Yeah. It's not, it's not.
- 7:36It's. Making fun of you, but OK.
- 7:37I know, I know. But I I got to accept it when I
- 7:40can get it however I can. Yeah, like Mungo is just like, I
- 7:43know people hype it up as a super scary movie, so that's why
- 7:46I included it here because, you know, it's not about what I
- 7:48think, it's about what other people think too.
- 7:50Yeah, I we gave it. We gave it the old college try.
- 7:55By that I mean we were in college when we.
- 7:57Watched it, that's true. We actually did give it a
- 7:59college try. OK so that movie came out June
- 8:038th or no? June 18th 2008.
- 8:07Budget of 1.4 million. Worldwide gross of 10,000.
- 8:13Wow. IMDb score 6.2.
- 8:15Talk about cult hit. Yeah, that's a cult.
- 8:18Yeah, that's one of those that I just don't get.
- 8:21I think that movie probably does have its own cult falling online
- 8:24too, yeah. We'll we'll need to cover it
- 8:26sometime, but we're going to have to like bring on somebody
- 8:28who absolutely likes the movie because I truly, I have a hard
- 8:33time when people, I read people talking about it online and I
- 8:36just don't. I see people with us too on
- 8:40there. I see a lot of people like I
- 8:41watch like Mungo and it's not that crazy, you know?
- 8:44And I I like seeing those because it makes me feel
- 8:46validated in the final movie. Martyrs that released September
- 8:523rd, 2008. 3.3 million budget, 1.1 million gross. 7 out of 10
- 8:57on IMDb. It's a good movie.
- 9:01I think it gets over hyped as like yeah like the most intense
- 9:05movie you'll ever see. That's how I feel about.
- 9:07It it is high stress. Though low body.
- 9:09Count. I don't think it's a bad movie,
- 9:11it's just not as good as people tell me it's.
- 9:15It gets blown out of proportion, I think, like, it did an extreme
- 9:19thing, and then people are like, Oh my God, how could you ever,
- 9:22you know? Yeah, it's OK.
- 9:25It's a good movie still. I like it.
- 9:27OK, yeah, let's do some tag lines.
- 9:30Tag lines tag lines tag. Lines The tag line on the poster
- 9:33we got to first one. We tell ourselves there's
- 9:36nothing to fear, but sometimes we're wrong.
- 9:38I never tell myself there's nothing to fear.
- 9:40I am afraid of everything. You like, run out of the house
- 9:43at the slightest bit of sleep Fear.
- 9:46It depends. It depends.
- 9:48If I think it's like a bug or something, I will run out.
- 9:50If I think somebody has legitimately broken into our
- 9:52house and I'm like, well, this is how I go, I guess I'm going
- 9:54to go back to sleep. So hopefully I'm murdered in my
- 9:57sleep. It's so weird knowing that.
- 9:59I don't understand that at all, but it's true.
- 10:02I can verify it. The second one inspired by true
- 10:05events and. True events being that break
- 10:09insurance happen. We'll get into it in a second.
- 10:12I've got some info on them more. Lock the door, pretend you're
- 10:18safe. That one, yeah, because we do a
- 10:22lot of times we're like, well, the door is locked, so.
- 10:24Obviously. Nobody has ever gotten around a
- 10:27locked door before. Yep.
- 10:29What would you do if this was happening to you?
- 10:32I just said. I you would stay in the house.
- 10:35Exactly. That's it.
- 10:36Yeah. Yeah, I've made my piece.
- 10:39In a way that almost kind of works because you're like
- 10:41stealing the satisfaction from them.
- 10:43They want you to put up a fight, but if you're not putting up a
- 10:45fight, they're like, fuck this, let's just go to the next house
- 10:47like. Well, first of all, I wouldn't
- 10:49have answered the door at 4:00 AM either.
- 10:51That's a great move, I. Say that you might have.
- 10:54I say that you would have. That I have done that.
- 10:56I have been woken up in the middle of the night by knocks at
- 10:59the door and I've answered it and I don't know why I do it.
- 11:01See, I'm. And those, those dudes were
- 11:03bounty hunters. They weren't even real police.
- 11:06We could have still. Got I know.
- 11:08Murdered. That happened y'all, It's like
- 11:112:00 AM and. I was like, I'm going to grab a
- 11:13bat. It's a wiggle bat.
- 11:16It is plastic. Honestly, that is a good.
- 11:18That's a good setup for a horror movie, too.
- 11:20Bounty hunters knock at the door at 2:00 AM, They tell us, yeah,
- 11:23there's a guy on the loose, used to live here.
- 11:25We're looking for him. He might be here.
- 11:28And, like, now I have to go to bed with that.
- 11:31It was bad. Yeah, and we were convinced that
- 11:34the person was still using our addresses like.
- 11:37Maybe he's. Yeah, like maybe he's here now.
- 11:38Had he been hiding out there before we moved in?
- 11:40Like, was he using our back patio?
- 11:42Because that wasn't locked. OK, more, more tag lines.
- 11:46Because you were home, obviously.
- 11:48Yeah. And what are you afraid of?
- 11:52Please see the earlier discussion.
- 11:54Yeah, everything. See notes.
- 11:57OK, that's it for that. OK, so let's do some fun facts.
- 11:59Yes, please. OK, so they they wanted this
- 12:04movie to be super relatable to people.
- 12:06So they use the setting and a certain type of house to get
- 12:09that feel that's super grounded and super relatable that most
- 12:12people would live in. I'm going to have thoughts on
- 12:15that when we discuss. Go ahead and share now.
- 12:20I don't think a house that size is going to be super relatable
- 12:23to people. The tiny it's it's not a big
- 12:26house from. The outside it looks tiny.
- 12:29They have Scooby-doo level shenanigans of running from room
- 12:32to room inside though. OK, that's true.
- 12:36They were very meticulous with how they designed it.
- 12:38And The funny thing is, the outside of the house is a real
- 12:41house, but they did the interior on a sound stage.
- 12:44Yeah, no shit. Yeah, it's.
- 12:47And that makes sense. You're right.
- 12:48It it, it is kind of like a magical place.
- 12:51The way the decor is done definitely feels like oh this is
- 12:55my dad's house in like the 80s. Like it has been inherited and
- 12:59only slightly like updated since.
- 13:04Yeah, it's not that bizarre like, but it it is a decent
- 13:08house for sure. So yeah, they they had to do the
- 13:11interior stuff on a sound stage, which created some issues for
- 13:15the sound guys. So it was super echoey in there.
- 13:19Anytime that there would be like knocks or screams, the sound
- 13:21would like resonate for seconds after.
- 13:24So like they had to do a lot of editing after the fact to get it
- 13:27all super cool. I'm surprised they didn't sound
- 13:30proof it better, honestly. Like it's a sound stage, right?
- 13:34It's a, it must be like, you know, for purposes to be able to
- 13:37control that it should be in your control.
- 13:39But I don't know, maybe they were amateurs.
- 13:42So it was mostly inspired by true events.
- 13:45That's not necessarily a lie. So there's two parts of that.
- 13:48The first part is he was reading about the Tate murders, which
- 13:52were the murders by the Manson family.
- 13:55And he was reading a lot of like the detailed descriptions and he
- 13:59realized like these victims had no idea who these people were,
- 14:02what they were doing, why they were doing it, and they were
- 14:05never given a reason. So they like he started to
- 14:10wonder what it was like from the victims perspective and wanted
- 14:13to make a movie from that rather than like the killer's
- 14:15perspective. I'm just saying that that reads
- 14:18more as inspired by true events rather than based on true
- 14:21events. Here's another part.
- 14:23So here's something from his personal experience.
- 14:26He had something similar happened in this movie too.
- 14:29So it's like a meshing of the two.
- 14:31So it's that. And then also when he was a kid,
- 14:34him and his little sister were left alone in a remote house in
- 14:38the woods by themselves and people and.
- 14:41He just thought to himself, what if the Manson family came to
- 14:43murder me? No people came to his door and
- 14:46knocked on the door. His little sister answered it.
- 14:49They asked for somebody that does not live there, they told
- 14:54him no and they went away and those people ended up being a
- 14:57bunch of kids that were breaking into homes if there were no
- 15:01people there. See, and This is why my mom said
- 15:03I wasn't allowed to answer the door when I was home alone.
- 15:06She was right. Yeah.
- 15:08Well, no. And actually, if you answered
- 15:09the door, it would have saved you here.
- 15:12But it doesn't in this movie. Yeah, no, it's the opposite.
- 15:14You're fucked either way in this.
- 15:15Movie. Yeah, just don't, don't talk to
- 15:17strangers. Oh.
- 15:18Don't talk to Strange. It's a good tagline.
- 15:20It's a good tagline. Stranger danger.
- 15:23I'm gonna write both of these down because in 45 minutes when
- 15:26we get to it. Yeah.
- 15:28So to his credit, to the movie's marketing credit, there is truth
- 15:33to both of that. Like, I mean, like both of his
- 15:35stories were kind of combined here to tell this one story.
- 15:40Yeah, but again, that's just inspired by true events.
- 15:43Not it is. You're right.
- 15:45You're right. Yeah, OK, so he wrote the the
- 15:50screenplay. This was his third ever
- 15:51screenplay written. Wow.
- 15:53It was originally called The Faces and.
- 15:56The strangers is way better. I know, but I kind of get it.
- 16:00The faces we get, the three different faces, that's a little
- 16:02bit different. He got the movie funded by
- 16:05submitting the screenplay into a competition, and it ended up
- 16:08getting sold to Universal as a result.
- 16:10I don't know if he won, but yeah, it ended up being kind of
- 16:13cool. I mean, in a way he won.
- 16:15In a way he did, yeah. This kind of got his whole film
- 16:18career started. He wasn't going to be the
- 16:20director at first. They had two other people
- 16:24originally attached to it, First off Mark Romanick and the second
- 16:29one Justin Lynn. Oh, really?
- 16:33Mr. Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift over here.
- 16:37Yeah, he was originally going to do it, but they both backed out.
- 16:39So it sat there for two years. It got passed from Universal to
- 16:43Rogue Pictures, and then once it got to Rogue Pictures, they're
- 16:46like, hey Brian, just fucking. What year was Tokyo drift?
- 16:48Justin Lynn might have been occupied cuz the first
- 16:53passengers was what, 03 so. I barely.
- 16:58Out of the possibility that he was.
- 17:00You know, like booked, I think it came out in 606, but this was
- 17:05all happening in 06. He was attached in 2006 to
- 17:08direct it. So yeah, it may have actually
- 17:11been like Fast and Furious was calling him.
- 17:15When family calls, you answer Yeah.
- 17:17Tokyo Dress 06. OK, so yeah, he must have been
- 17:20taken away by by Bama boy. Yeah, he's like, listen, Vin
- 17:24Diesel's got my number now. That's true, yeah.
- 17:26I don't need I don't need chicken shit gig.
- 17:29Him and Diesel had a falling out.
- 17:31Oh really? Vin Diesel had a falling out
- 17:33with somebody. It was after the fast sex.
- 17:36He was originally directing that and like, they did not get
- 17:38along, so he left. OK.
- 17:41And in the final bit of trivia here, the original ending was
- 17:44going to be different. It was written differently in
- 17:47the screenplay and they actually filmed it all too.
- 17:48But it showed them actually removing their masks.
- 17:50We saw faces and all. They wandered that home forbid
- 17:54they cleaned up the crime scene, they changed into their clothes
- 17:58and then they went about their way.
- 18:01But they did a test screening and they decided to change it
- 18:05after the fact, which is where our boy Kevin Groider saw three
- 18:10coming in hard off of Saw Three. He was the editor for this, and
- 18:14he was tasked to cut that down. So he had to edit it to where we
- 18:19don't see the faces at all and cut all of the other bullshit.
- 18:22So yeah, he worked his magic there.
- 18:26I will say because like we get like not even full profiles of
- 18:30them in this final version. Big glimpses.
- 18:32It felt illegal watching seeing them, yeah, seeing them on the
- 18:37behind the scenes stuff. And I was like.
- 18:38I know. And Gemma Ward is British.
- 18:41I know that was she's the. She's the only one that really
- 18:44talks. She's a model.
- 18:45Apparently they like he brought her in because like, apparently
- 18:48he saw like that was the look that he, like, pictured for that
- 18:52character originally. But yeah, yeah, I don't like
- 18:56that either. I wish that they wore their
- 18:57masks when they were giving their behind the scenes.
- 18:59Do you? Hate the masking?
- 19:01I do, there are times and places for it, but nothing.
- 19:05No, I like the mystery there. OK, that's it for the fun facts.
- 19:09So let's do some good, bad, ugly and absurd Jesse.
- 19:12OK, but first, since this is your birthday movie, you need to
- 19:16discuss why this felt appropriate as this year's
- 19:19birthday picked. OK.
- 19:21Why is this Travis? So I mean, I can always pull it
- 19:25up here anytime, but this is one of my favorite movies and I can
- 19:28barely get you to watch this. It's very stressful.
- 19:32I know it is very stressful. It even had Talia in it the.
- 19:36Entire time. Talia picked up on my stress
- 19:38pretty hardcore in like she. Did yeah, she, you know.
- 19:43And this is also Talia's nightmare.
- 19:45Yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 19:46This is like the reason she barks, like you were saying.
- 19:49And I, you know, I love this movie so much.
- 19:52This is I don't know if I would say it's the last movie to truly
- 19:55scare me, but like it's one of the most like I was still like
- 20:00it. Changed you?
- 20:01Yeah, like I, you know, 2008, I was 16.
- 20:07Yeah, I was 16. And, you know, I was getting at
- 20:10that age where it was, like, harder for me to be scared by
- 20:12movies. And this movie actually scared
- 20:16me whenever I saw the trailer. I was afraid to watch this
- 20:18alone. I had to make my mom and dad
- 20:19watch it with me. Both of them.
- 20:21Both of them, yeah. I needed two people.
- 20:23I was like Gallia. So yeah, you know, I just, I
- 20:27love this movie so much. It had a huge impact on me.
- 20:30So that's why it's my birthday movie.
- 20:32OK, Yeah, All right. Fair enough.
- 20:35Well, I guess I'll jump into the goods that I have for this
- 20:37movie. I agree.
- 20:38This movie was very it. It stuck with me seeing it in
- 20:44theaters. Obviously, my mom's talked about
- 20:46how she just wanted the movie to be over.
- 20:48Yeah, after a certain point, she was like, can we just end this
- 20:51already? Dude, the.
- 20:53Thing about this is like, I didn't see this in theaters.
- 20:56I don't know why I didn't but like.
- 20:57We did. Yeah.
- 21:00I pictured seeing it in theaters, though, and like,
- 21:02where my movie theater was like it's, you know, there's like
- 21:05nothing that's like, it's in the middle of nowhere.
- 21:07So like walking out of the movie theaters, I was like imagining
- 21:10them being out there in that area waiting for me.
- 21:13Like it was just a terrifying thought.
- 21:15Yeah, I remember that movie theater when it was still open
- 21:19and it's. Yeah, it's chilling.
- 21:22I there are some just really good moments.
- 21:25I've talked before that like I'm good with a jump scare if it's
- 21:28done well and obviously we get a lot of those.
- 21:30But that that moment of her drinking the water in the
- 21:34kitchen having crashing out is that do we use that here?
- 21:40Did she? Eventually I'm going to learn
- 21:42when. I don't think she crashed out
- 21:43yet. Probably.
- 21:44OK. Are you talking about she
- 21:45crashed out because she got her post?
- 21:48Maybe. She may have crashed out.
- 21:51We didn't see the media. Aftermath there I I'm officially
- 21:55the age where I don't understand new slang.
- 21:57Anyway, she's like trying to calm herself down and she's
- 22:00drinking that water and we just see him like stealthily like
- 22:04behind her and he's just there for so long and it's so scary.
- 22:09Also, I find it really effective.
- 22:12You know, they're hiding out in that spare room.
- 22:14They've got the gun and you're like, perfect.
- 22:16This is exactly how you need to do it.
- 22:17Except then in walks Mike AKA Glenn Howard AKA the Golden God
- 22:22and he gets out a help and is just shot and it's just so
- 22:28quick. And then they have that moment
- 22:30of like God that doesn't feel like that was the right person.
- 22:32He's like. He wasn't wearing a mask.
- 22:34Yeah. And that moment also sticks with
- 22:37me really, really hard. And there's just, there are
- 22:40several moments like that throughout this movie where it's
- 22:42just really, really effective at giving the scares and the things
- 22:47that you're going to be afraid of being isolated and alone in a
- 22:51house like this because that house is really isolated.
- 22:54And I think we both have experiences growing up in those
- 22:59kind of isolated home settings. Yeah.
- 23:02And it just, it's effective. It's an effective movie.
- 23:06Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's the thing with
- 23:09me. Like this movie, it is
- 23:12discomfort from the very first second of the movie.
- 23:15Like it starts off like you get the discomfort between them as a
- 23:20couple because you know something bad just happened
- 23:23there. So you're starting off bad right
- 23:25out the gate and it just gets worse throughout the movie.
- 23:29It just gets worse and worse, man.
- 23:32If he hadn't tried to propose at somebody else's wedding, say he
- 23:35was waiting to do that at the house, we could have gotten my
- 23:37favorite trope of somebody getting murdered before he gets
- 23:40super. We could have had that man, this
- 23:45guy the holy shit. Like I have like my own thoughts
- 23:49of like how he is as a person based off of these few snippets
- 23:53of who we see him. As yeah, especially like that
- 23:55deleted scene of him, like, getting himself a shot at the
- 23:58bar, pumping himself up in the mirror.
- 24:00And then he's like, I'm gonna propose her in the parking lot
- 24:03super casually at somebody else's wedding.
- 24:05So fucking romantic. I get the vibe that this guy is
- 24:10kind of like Michael Scott. He is like the like the
- 24:13delusional romantic. Yes.
- 24:16And I, I like that they don't give us a ton of the background
- 24:19and you're still able to piece those moments together.
- 24:23My biggest question is how long were they dating?
- 24:26It not long enough it feels like.
- 24:27No, I don't think it was. I like, but I like that it's
- 24:31left ambiguous. But at the same time, like, you
- 24:33know what this guy's like there's.
- 24:35Even that moment where she goes and tries on the ring when he
- 24:38goes out to get her more cigarettes and it's not even the
- 24:40right size. I didn't even pick up.
- 24:43Yeah, that's amazing. She.
- 24:44Puts it on and then she can't cuz when a ring's too tight,
- 24:46usually you can manage to get it on, but it's getting it off that
- 24:49gets difficult, yeah. Man, this guy, man.
- 24:54You don't propose on a whim, which it kind of feels like is
- 24:57what he did. And you don't propose at a
- 24:58wedding. Yeah, also.
- 25:00That that's like a big, big one. Like, dude, yeah, this guy, he,
- 25:04he probably sucked. And you don't propose in a
- 25:07parking lot when it's cold outside and she wanted the
- 25:10girlfriend wanted to dance with. You, she's like, hey, let's hang
- 25:13out with friends. Like, no, no, no.
- 25:14Let me take you out here into this isolated parking lot in the
- 25:17middle of the coldness. And never go to a second
- 25:19location, yeah. It's a stranger danger.
- 25:22That's OK. OK.
- 25:26Yeah. I mean, other than all of this
- 25:28shit, like the movie just builds tension throughout really well.
- 25:31And I like that it doesn't need a high body count for it to be
- 25:33effective. Like, it just kind of plays on
- 25:35that for the duration of the movie.
- 25:38And then they finally kill them. Yeah.
- 25:39You know, like, it's just super effective that way.
- 25:42OK, so what's some bad stuff? Listen, I appreciate the stealth
- 25:50mode that the strangers can activate, but these are the
- 25:54there's no way they're as fast as they are.
- 25:56No like that moment, like with touching his neck when he's
- 25:59leaning into the car. That's super effective.
- 26:01But the fact that she's just gone?
- 26:04Just vanishes, no? Which like I've always thought
- 26:07she dropped and rolled under the car maybe?
- 26:11I wish I could have seen that, but.
- 26:13That would have been amazing. Yeah, but I feel like he would
- 26:15have noticed somebody rolling on the ground under his feet.
- 26:18I mean, she probably would have dove right into the shattered
- 26:21glass on the ground and like, you know, like, ow, ow, yeah,
- 26:25shit, shit, shit, you know, like, but whatever, yeah.
- 26:29Like and that's The thing is like we have 3 strangers, we
- 26:32don't have to give them these like super speed powers because
- 26:35you've got three of them. Got numbers 3.
- 26:37Versus two, yeah, it's a numbers game.
- 26:39I'm OK with those odds. Please don't make them super
- 26:42fast as well. They're supposed to just, this
- 26:44is supposed to be a thing that could just easily happen, and
- 26:48I'm calling bullshit on that. It when you put the mask on, you
- 26:51get super abilities. That's just kind of how horror
- 26:53movies work, it seems. Is that the only bad you have?
- 26:59Yeah, that's that's like I said, this movie is simple, but it's
- 27:02effective. Yeah, other than that little
- 27:04thing for. Me.
- 27:06The only thing I could say is I think once we get to the end it
- 27:09kind of goes on for a bit. Yeah, we kept telling Talia,
- 27:12like, there's only 10 more minutes in this movie, Talia.
- 27:14And like 30 minutes later, it was finally over.
- 27:17Like, yeah, like it's just, you know, we're getting more of the
- 27:19same tension scenes. Like it's just like I'm hiding
- 27:23here and they're wondering, you know, like it's we've seen that
- 27:26throughout most of this movie already.
- 27:27And then when we get to them all tied up in the chair and they're
- 27:30just they're standing there for a long time thinking about how
- 27:33do we stab these two? And then they just do it and.
- 27:36Out of the night. Yeah, and then we get that scene
- 27:40of them driving away and like the two little Mormon boys.
- 27:42They're Mormons, I think. I thought they were Jehovah's
- 27:45Witnesses. That's what I put in my.
- 27:47Mormons. Mormon's witnesses.
- 27:50Mormon's witness. Yeah, It's like they were having
- 27:54their own heretic moment. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:57But yeah, it just, it kind of drags just for a bit.
- 27:59And this is not even a long movie either.
- 28:02But like it, that's how you know it drags because like I'm at the
- 28:05end, I'm like, well, let's wrap this up.
- 28:07Yeah. OK, ugly.
- 28:10So they get to the house and he had set out all of these rose
- 28:14petals and everything was meant to be nice.
- 28:18He got the Bluebell ice cream, kind of side eyeing that a
- 28:21little bit. Did he have that in preparation
- 28:24of like if she goes wrong? I feel like it was meant to be
- 28:28celebratory. OK, so like, way to spring for
- 28:30the vanilla bluebell, James. No, she goes to take the bath
- 28:35and that water comes out rusty. Does it?
- 28:40Yeah, and it's not that the Rose petals and oil are in the tub.
- 28:44It is coming out of the faucet, Rusty.
- 28:46You just like stuffed a bunch of it's like I wanted to actually
- 28:51like shower rose petals on. You and I thought for a minute
- 28:54she was gone, but then she fills the tub and just sits in this
- 28:58rust water. I mean, she's having a rough
- 29:01night as it is. She needs that moment of
- 29:03solitude right here like. She's like, maybe tetanus will
- 29:06ease the blow. Maybe I can get out of this by
- 29:09dying, you know, like that's like you're, you're in such an
- 29:12awkward situation that you're welcoming death.
- 29:14Yeah, it's just man, it's crap. I.
- 29:17Didn't notice that. Yeah, I had never noticed it
- 29:19before this watch and I was like, what the fuck?
- 29:21That water is red. What if that was an unrated
- 29:23version? Change.
- 29:26They're like, listen, listen, we understand the stabbing and
- 29:29killing and everything, but the real horror here is the piping
- 29:34in this old house. Yeah, it's pretty tragic.
- 29:39Gosh, what is ugly? I don't know.
- 29:41I guess the fact that he killed his best friend accidentally.
- 29:44I felt so bad for him, Yeah. You know, like it's, it's really
- 29:48shitty, like, and he went out there, it's like 5:00 AM at this
- 29:52point. Yeah, in the.
- 29:53Movie. This guy went out of his way to
- 29:55get his best friend just to get shot in the face.
- 29:58Although it's dimness. Yeah.
- 30:00So you may have, you know, eliminated a psychopath.
- 30:02Also true. Yeah, all right.
- 30:05Absurd. I got to bring it back to the
- 30:07ice cream. There's this ice cream that
- 30:09stays on the fucking table for the entire goddamn movie.
- 30:12That was my first absurd too. But yes, it's before how the
- 30:15strangers even start happening. Like James is eating this tub of
- 30:18ice cream, feeling sad, and then he's like, I'm going to go get
- 30:21you cigarettes and he just leaves that shit out on the
- 30:23table. I wanted to see a scene of one
- 30:25of the strangers sitting at the table and scooping it onto their
- 30:27mask. Like scooping it or like being
- 30:30like, well, this is unsanitary and closing it up and putting it
- 30:33back in the freezer. That tub of ice cream, every
- 30:35time it came and just shot it, I got so angry.
- 30:38Yeah. Did it ever melt?
- 30:40I I don't know cuz it's implied that James ate enough that we
- 30:45can't see it from the. Top he ate that.
- 30:47Fast and yeah, and that's The thing is that we saw it was a
- 30:50new type of ice cream. I'm so distracted by this ice
- 30:53cream. It's.
- 30:55It's problematic. And then also I need to see the
- 30:57blueprints. I need to see the layout for
- 30:59this house because I don't. It's like a friend's house or
- 31:03the the friend's apartment. Yes, like from the outside, like
- 31:06it's a ranch style. You can tell it's still a
- 31:08decently sized ranch style. Maybe it goes back farther, I
- 31:11don't know. But there are so many rooms to
- 31:14this fucking house and then there's a whole aluminum barn
- 31:18Outback. Why do they need a barn?
- 31:20They clearly are not cultivating the lands.
- 31:23It almost looked like a big tool shed.
- 31:27Really like they repurposed the whole barn into a tool shed.
- 31:30It's with the radio. Yes, with the radio.
- 31:32It's just wild. I I have so many questions about
- 31:36this house and about the goddamn ice cream.
- 31:39The goddamn ice cream. Yeah, the ice cream is a big one
- 31:43for me. Also.
- 31:45Just like, just like it's 4:30 and like all that shit's
- 31:49happened and they got there and it's really awkward.
- 31:51And after she showers, she doesn't get in comfy clothes.
- 31:54She's like, I'm gonna throw in like a flannel and undershirt
- 31:57and blue jeans. Yeah, the blue jeans kind of
- 31:59threw me for a loop too. Like the flannel, I can accept
- 32:01that because that is kind of cozy, especially if it's kind of
- 32:04chilly. Out I've done this version of
- 32:05this outfit before, but with leggings to be around the house.
- 32:08We're leggings around this time. I don't remember when that.
- 32:12Happened. This was very much like right
- 32:14before the rise of the yoga pants.
- 32:17OK, yeah. So she didn't have that option.
- 32:19She would have been in sweatpants and or.
- 32:21Like the Victoria's Secret, like with pink and rhinestones across
- 32:24the ass. Yeah, yeah, and it says juicy.
- 32:28Can you imagine if she had that in this movie?
- 32:30No, like on her ass she. Strikes me.
- 32:32She doesn't strike me as a juicy girl.
- 32:34She strikes me as a pink girl. Pink.
- 32:36Right on the butt, just like throughout the whole movie takes
- 32:39you out of it. I wonder if they like proposed
- 32:42that to Liv Tyler and she's like, no, it's.
- 32:46Not a question, Liv. It's happening.
- 32:50It's just like juicy or pink. Which is it gonna be?
- 32:53What's What kind of girl is Kristen She's.
- 32:55Like I'm gonna wear my own blue jeans.
- 32:58Thing, OK. What are you rate of?
- 33:03Sorry, I was not prepared for you to be.
- 33:04Done with the. Absurd so quickly.
- 33:06No, I'm done with my upstairs. I'm gonna give this a 9.75.
- 33:11It's a really strong movie. Yeah, I give it a 10.
- 33:13This is a 10 for me. So fucking scary. 875 is our
- 33:19starting. 879-9875 Yeah. OK, cool.
- 33:23And maybe Oven tells us this is based on a true story.
- 33:26The night of February 11th, 2005, Kristen and James had a
- 33:30really bad day. This.
- 33:32Is a very Texas Chainsaw. Like, yes, they've got like a
- 33:35narrator and everything. I'm glad that they told us
- 33:37explicitly that it's February because we also had like the flu
- 33:40of her saying like, oh, it's so cold out here because that's the
- 33:42only way that like this all kicking off at 4:00 AM makes any
- 33:47sense that it's dark for as long as it is.
- 33:48That's true. Yeah, you're right.
- 33:51So yeah, we we overhear like a 911 call from Jordan, whoever
- 33:56that is. One of the Mormons witnesses.
- 33:59OK. And yeah, we're getting shots of
- 34:01the aftermath of everything that happened here.
- 34:03There's blood on the wall, There's kids seeing all this
- 34:06shit. They're getting caught that. 911
- 34:08operator does not even carry that.
- 34:10A 7 year old is crying about all the blood around.
- 34:12She says. Well, is anybody dead?
- 34:14Yeah. Well, I mean, they're, they're
- 34:16notoriously kind of they, they're, they got to be jaded in
- 34:19that, that job role. Yeah, you got to be used to
- 34:23that. Still.
- 34:24So after all that, we are now switching over to an awkward
- 34:28drive home and they're stopped at a red light in the middle.
- 34:31There's. Just like tears streaming down
- 34:35this space, you know? And then James is like white
- 34:37knuckle on the steering wheel, Like this is not a car that I
- 34:40want to be a part. Can you imagine?
- 34:41Like you're supposed to ride home with them.
- 34:44Like they were your ride. Oh my God, that would be a
- 34:47fucking nightmare. I would be.
- 34:49It's like that, that scene from Breaking Bad, I don't know if
- 34:52you've ever seen this, but it's when Jesse is like sitting at
- 34:56the dinner table with Walt and Skyler.
- 34:59And it's like towards the end of the show where they stop giving
- 35:01a fuck about each other and they've like separated.
- 35:03And she's like saying all these things about how she fucked Ted
- 35:06and just like all this stuff. And he's just like sitting there
- 35:09drinking the water, just like side eyeing both of them.
- 35:12It's it's awkward, it's bad. But yeah.
- 35:16So they arrive at the house. I like this.
- 35:19We see Mike, not Mike. James and Mike had set up like
- 35:24flower petals. Yeah, and and James, he like
- 35:27stops at the mailbox and there's like a shit ton of mail in the
- 35:30mailbox, which I relate to that hard.
- 35:33Yeah, this strikes me as like a family vacation home like.
- 35:36That's what I think. I don't think why.
- 35:37Are they putting that there as like a mailing address for
- 35:40anything? Unless this is just all junk
- 35:42mail, this is. Like the Airbnb where like
- 35:44they're like, and get the mail for us.
- 35:46Yeah, you got to do that. So yeah, they go in there, rose
- 35:49petals all over the place. It's.
- 35:51Super and candles not lit thank God.
- 35:54Yeah, that would have been bad. So she goes and she takes her
- 35:58rust water bath and James calls Mike to come pick him up.
- 36:03He's like, can you pick me up in the morning?
- 36:04It is the morning, which is why Mike arrives so soon.
- 36:09They he we have like a flash to the wedding scene.
- 36:13He interrupts her laughing with their friends.
- 36:16It's implied that they're in the bridal party and she's like,
- 36:21let's dance. And he's like no, come with me
- 36:24to the isolated party. Come, come.
- 36:28This guy chose, like, the worst time too, because she's having a
- 36:30good time with her friends. He's like, hey, hey, come here.
- 36:32No, no, no, let's not do this shit.
- 36:34We're well, let's stop having fun.
- 36:35Come with me to the parking lot. Yeah.
- 36:38I'm going to propose to you at somebody else's wedding, but at
- 36:41least some people do that. They're like, and I'm not
- 36:44justifying this, but they're doing it inside like a
- 36:48beautifully decorated event hall.
- 36:52They're around people they care about.
- 36:54If you're going to do it, there's a way to do it.
- 36:56Usually you're doing it. To piggyback off of somebody
- 36:59else's expense, James did none of that and Kristen clocks it.
- 37:08And it feels like maybe this is a common thing in their
- 37:14relationship where he was like, I understand the point of a good
- 37:17gesture, I just don't know how to meet the good gesture.
- 37:20Like I feel like these rose petals and candles are Mike's
- 37:22suggestion. Yeah, I don't know, man.
- 37:25I'd see, I think. Because they were supposed to do
- 37:27a road trip after this. Like do it after the road trip
- 37:31or? Do it on the road.
- 37:32Or on the road trip. Yeah, you can.
- 37:34Have like a beautiful like romantic moment, like maybe
- 37:36you're doing like a hike or something.
- 37:38Beautiful views. It's just the two of.
- 37:40You look, I think it could be sweet.
- 37:41It could have been good. Realistically, the answer is
- 37:44going to be the same regardless, from what I gather here.
- 37:47So I guess it's best to just get that shit out of the way because
- 37:50then at least they're just driving through the town
- 37:52awkwardly instead of like, through the country awkwardly.
- 37:54Yeah. So yeah, he does that pops a
- 37:58question. We don't get an answer, but we
- 38:00can kind of gather what. Was this our DVD or is the movie
- 38:05actually having these slow MO moments?
- 38:07Cuz it felt like the frame rate slowed down a little bit.
- 38:10OK. Yeah, you can catch that in a
- 38:11lot of movies sometimes, and I actually saw them reuse shots a
- 38:15few times with that same swell now.
- 38:16But yeah, it happens occasionally.
- 38:19After her bath she puts the dress back on because she says
- 38:22that she feels really pretty in it.
- 38:25He is eating the ice cream straight from the tub and we
- 38:28hear the clock chiming 4 times so we know it's 4:00 AM and she
- 38:33said that everything looks really beautiful and she like is
- 38:37acknowledging that for he put into it.
- 38:38He goes please keep the ring. I can't keep it.
- 38:41I'm not going to return it. Why would she keep the ring
- 38:44right? Like that's like a horrible
- 38:46reminder for her. He's like, it's like ready
- 38:49revenge. You figure out to.
- 38:51Do yeah, it's your problem now, yeah, yeah, so.
- 38:55Then he puts on a sad record. That was gonna be his Let's get
- 39:02down in Dirty Music right here, Yeah.
- 39:04I wanna know if if he had to like I would have liked to see
- 39:07him like swap out the basket of records like this is the happy
- 39:10times. Nope, we go put the sad records
- 39:12up here. I like to imagine that's why he
- 39:15wanted to fuck too. Not R&B or anything like that.
- 39:18He wanted to fuck to some like. Old school.
- 39:20Bullshit. Yeah, so.
- 39:22And they do to his credits start to pull around a little bit
- 39:28before they're interrupted by a knock at the door.
- 39:31Or as I put in my notes they get knock blocked.
- 39:33Oh, knock blocked, I was. So proud of that.
- 39:37I'm so proud of you. Yeah.
- 39:39Yeah. They get knocked hard here.
- 39:40They answer the door. It's this woman.
- 39:43They can't turn the light on, so they can't see who it is.
- 39:46Listen, if this is you though, it would just be because you're
- 39:48hitting the wrong switch because you do that true every time
- 39:50that's. True.
- 39:51Don't put two switches there. Just give me one switch for my
- 39:54wife. That's all I need.
- 39:56Or like if it was our side side door because it's also the
- 40:00farthest switch for the backyard one and the closer one to the
- 40:04door is for the kitchen. So like, I would have loved to
- 40:07see that happening in like the kitchen last.
- 40:09Right. That would have been amazing.
- 40:13But no. Yeah, the woman there is just
- 40:16like, hey, it's Tamara here. And they tell her that they got
- 40:20the wrong place. And she wanders off and
- 40:24Christian's yeah, he. Twists the light bulb.
- 40:27He's like, oh, OK, so it was working.
- 40:29It was just untwisted. You should be immediately
- 40:32frightened. Yeah, that's a bad sign.
- 40:34Like that should. That was working before it was
- 40:37on when they got there. So yeah, like, you know, shit's
- 40:39fucked up. Yes, and Christian's like
- 40:44there's nobody out here like I there's no vehicle.
- 40:47How did she get here? Should you go check on her?
- 40:49And he's like, Nah, they go back in, the ice cream still out.
- 40:55We're just gonna clock every time that ice cream is on the
- 40:58screen. She's out of cigarettes.
- 41:00And he's like, I'll go get you more.
- 41:02And she's like, no, it's fine, I need to go to bed anyway.
- 41:05And he's like, you won't you need more cigarettes?
- 41:08She's going to continue smoking while he's gone.
- 41:10So she had more cigarettes. She.
- 41:12Did what the fuck? Where did she find those?
- 41:14I don't even remember. Maybe she just had like extras
- 41:17in her bag or something. This was a calculated move to
- 41:20get him out of the house. She, yeah, she was really just
- 41:23trying to, like, find an excuse to go to bed instead of sitting
- 41:25there being miserable and feeling like, yeah, she did
- 41:29something wrong by just not being ready to get married.
- 41:31SH man, there's some layers here.
- 41:33So anyways, yeah, he leaves. He starts a fire for her though
- 41:36before he goes and then head it's out.
- 41:39So yeah, we see her go change into her jeans and whatnot and
- 41:44she's getting a glass of water smoking a.
- 41:45Cigarette she she has not changed yet first she tries on
- 41:49the ring. It's too small.
- 41:51She wanders around the house. There's another knock.
- 41:53She doesn't open the door then. So she's just like, hey, you
- 41:56were already by here, Like you've already been here.
- 41:59And then the fire starts smoking way too much and the smoke alarm
- 42:05goes off. Freaked out all of our pets.
- 42:07Oh yeah. And she manages to knock it
- 42:10down, which turns it off. It's laying on the floor.
- 42:13She is kind of freaked out because there's more knocks
- 42:16happening at the front door. And she tries to call James.
- 42:18Her cell phone is dead. So she plugs it into charge and
- 42:21she uses the landline. She's changing while she's on
- 42:23the landline asking James to come back.
- 42:25That's. Right and.
- 42:26Stay in it, or at least stay on the line with her because she's
- 42:29freaked out. That's right.
- 42:31Yeah. So she.
- 42:35They the phone gets disconnected.
- 42:36Yeah, I think it's implied that they cut the phone line or James
- 42:40just had no desire to be on the fight.
- 42:42It's one or the other. I thought that he lost service
- 42:44because they're out in the country.
- 42:46I think it's I think it's the landline because they didn't end
- 42:48up using that to call anybody later and we don't see the
- 42:51landline getting destroyed. OK, you're.
- 42:53Probably right, yeah. So she goes in the kitchen.
- 42:56She smokes a cigarette. Yeah.
- 43:00It gets a glass of water and all this happening.
- 43:03I wrote in all caps. Man appears.
- 43:07And that is the freakiest fucking thing.
- 43:09That's the thing that scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
- 43:11It's so frightening because it's one of those, it's the opposite
- 43:15of a jump scare because you just kind of have to be paying
- 43:18attention to the whole scene and he just this like just suddenly
- 43:22there. It's just like, I love that.
- 43:23I love background show like that.
- 43:25Like yes, it's out of focus. You're not like you're supposed
- 43:27to see it, but like, you know, like it's just really well done.
- 43:31He leaves, like our range of you anyway, and then we hear a door
- 43:36open and close. That freaks her out, so she
- 43:38grabs a knife. The ice cream is still out on
- 43:41the kitchen table and the smoke alarm is no longer on the floor.
- 43:46It has been moved to a chair, yes.
- 43:49And her phone is gone. And this is where she starts
- 43:52getting really freaked out, especially because, oh, all
- 43:55three of them just banging on different parts of the house and
- 43:59we got wind chimes Outback. Yep, she goes to like check the
- 44:03window and then she like opens it up with a knife and boom the
- 44:06bag face man. And like, that screen there sits
- 44:11with me in my head. But hearing the reverb that was
- 44:14happening on the sound stage, yeah, that I was like, man, it
- 44:19really is a problem with how much Liv Tyler screaming.
- 44:21She didn't know how powerful her scream was.
- 44:24Yeah, yeah. She was like, it was just all
- 44:26bottled up on me. And all of a sudden this right
- 44:30here, this moment has, this is how I always hear the
- 44:34Quicksilver Girl. Any time I hear that, I just
- 44:36hear this part like on repeat over and over again.
- 44:39It's like burned into my memory. Well, she goes and hides and she
- 44:44hears the door open and she hears footsteps approach.
- 44:48And thankfully she doesn't have a gun because it's James.
- 44:53Oh, we missed. We missed a part too.
- 44:55Before she goes and hides, the front door pops open and it is.
- 45:00Pinup, pinup. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 45:03So yeah. Yeah, then she goes and hides in
- 45:04the bedroom and this is when James gets back.
- 45:06She has like beaten a lamp out of fright and frustration and
- 45:12cut her hand and he's like, what the what the fuck happened?
- 45:15And she's like, no, no, listen, we're just going to barricade
- 45:18this room. And he was like, no, there's
- 45:21nobody out there. Crazy, crazy.
- 45:24They look around and when they look out the window, like they
- 45:29look through the whole house, first of all, they're just
- 45:31trying to see any trace of anybody.
- 45:32And they're also looking for her phone, can't find it anywhere.
- 45:35They peek out the window and doll faces standing out in the
- 45:40road. We don't see a mask on her yet.
- 45:43Her face is just shadowed. And he's like, oh shit, well, I
- 45:47left my phone in the car so I'm going to go get it.
- 45:49And she's like, please don't. He's like, listen, it's fine.
- 45:52You're overreacting. I am definitely taking you not
- 45:57seriously as a human. I see you're very afraid.
- 46:00And there's still that shady girl out there who loosens light
- 46:03bulbs and is just in the middle of nowhere on foot.
- 46:07It's fine. I'm going to go out to the car.
- 46:09I, I wish that he would have done something like maybe if you
- 46:12said yes, I would have believed you, you know, like.
- 46:14You know who I bet James is friends with?
- 46:16Who? Mika.
- 46:18Man, they yeah, like Mika's in the friend group for sure.
- 46:21Him, Mike and Mika. Yeah, like Mike is the Angel on
- 46:25James's shoulder. And Mika?
- 46:26'S. The devil on his shoulder.
- 46:28Like Mike's. Like we really need to cut out
- 46:30Mika. Like he's getting weird.
- 46:31He's being really fucking rude to his girlfriend Katie.
- 46:34That's toxic. And Mika's like, dude, you
- 46:36should have included a Ouija board.
- 46:38Like when like it would have been, she would have said yes.
- 46:41Like also, by the way, when this has all been going down, we've
- 46:44seen that the phone, Kristen's phone, is in the fireplace.
- 46:48They just haven't noticed it yet.
- 46:49Yeah, so he goes out to the car and he goes, shit, all of the
- 46:54windows are smashed in. And he still is like, no,
- 46:57everything's fine. The car has been hot wired so
- 47:00it's just running and he like peeks and he goes shit.
- 47:04All of the cigarette packages are like, dumped out and
- 47:07grumpled on the floor. Fucking Dick he just did that.
- 47:11Such a rude move. These guys are assholes.
- 47:14Like he is so calm and he is more frustrated, like man, kids
- 47:20these days. And it's like, James, you are in
- 47:24danger, my dude. I think he was like, because he
- 47:27told her before you take the car, I think this is a rental
- 47:30and he's like, it's not gonna be on me, it's gonna be on her.
- 47:33Yeah, he didn't get the insurance.
- 47:35Maybe he did it. Maybe he did it before he went
- 47:38back in. Yeah, he was like.
- 47:40Like, Mike's gonna pick me up, I'm gonna get out of here, she's
- 47:42gonna walk out. Regret saying no big time.
- 47:44Yeah, the battery's gonna be drained from.
- 47:46Running. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:49And. She's gonna see empty cigarette
- 47:51packages. Crumbled up fucking cigarettes.
- 47:53Enjoy. Your nicotine headache.
- 47:57So yeah, tire's flat too. Yeah, the hand brushes on the
- 48:00back of his neck like you talked about earlier.
- 48:02Startles him. He's still like, must be nobody.
- 48:06So he goes back in and sees his phone on the counter without the
- 48:11battery and he goes, we need to, we need to leave.
- 48:14Kristen. Kristen, you don't understand.
- 48:17I'm sure you're not paying enough attention.
- 48:19Right now, because you're all. Hysterical over something, I
- 48:21don't know what, but there are people here trying to hurt us.
- 48:25You need to be more aware of of your surroundings.
- 48:27Kristen, why didn't you say anything?
- 48:29Kristen, you should have told me that that girl was backed.
- 48:36So they they see the girl now wearing the mask.
- 48:40Yeah, I can't. This is a doll face, right?
- 48:44Yeah doll face is the blonde one pinup is the black haired one
- 48:48yeah he's like okay we just we are just gonna go to the car
- 48:53don't worry it's hotwired. She's like when did she learn
- 48:55how to do that? He goes there's a lot of things
- 48:57you don't know about me Kristen. We've been dating him on and
- 49:01they get into the car and a truck appears.
- 49:05Truck, truck, smash smash. It's bad and they have to run
- 49:10back in. And this is what I like is that
- 49:12they're taking the reasonable steps.
- 49:14They're doing all of the right things, but it's just that the
- 49:17Strangers have also seen every horror movie, so they're ready
- 49:20to fuck with them. I like that they're fucking with
- 49:22them. Yeah like it's the pin up in the
- 49:24truck ramming it. But then they also have bag head
- 49:27in front of them with an axe, Yes.
- 49:29And like, I can't believe they got out of the car and still ran
- 49:32into the house. And like the fact that you know
- 49:34that you made it there safely, you know that they're fucking
- 49:36with you at this point. Yes, like they they haven't,
- 49:40Yeah, they haven't killed you yet.
- 49:41But the fact that they're doing everything they can to cut you
- 49:44off from the outside world shows that they intend to.
- 49:46But they're playing with their meal. 1st it's yeah, that's it
- 49:49just makes it that much more scary.
- 49:51Yeah, so he's trying to find his dad's gun.
- 49:53He said he used to hide it. Apparently hiding it was just
- 49:55putting it on the top of the bookshelf.
- 49:57You know, but that was actually what my parents said to.
- 50:00And no, it did not work. I didn't play with guns, but I
- 50:03played with knives. It's not good.
- 50:06Then he has to go find the ammo. It's in the closet in the
- 50:10bedroom where they have written hello all over the window.
- 50:14And then they start throwing what I'm sure is just clumps of
- 50:17salt. At the window.
- 50:18But I like to imagine it's poop, yeah.
- 50:21I wouldn't put it past these people here.
- 50:23Yeah. Also, we get further
- 50:24confirmation that James is not really a cool guy because he's
- 50:28like, I don't know how to fuck the symbol of this thing.
- 50:29She's like, I thought you said you must, like, would go hunting
- 50:32with your dad. He's like, yeah, I said that
- 50:35just like, this guy fucking sucks.
- 50:36Yeah. No wonder she said no.
- 50:38I am Team Kristen, yeah. She did herself a favor by
- 50:43getting out of this relationship.
- 50:45Can. You imagine dying this night and
- 50:47you just got engaged to this piece of shit.
- 50:49Yeah. And then you find out all this
- 50:51stuff after you said yes. Like it took the sting out a
- 50:55little bit, saying no already here.
- 50:57At least she knows that she didn't hitch her wagon to this
- 51:00guy. Well, anyways, they get the ammo
- 51:03from the shoebox they loaded up. They're just like, cute bucks
- 51:06shoot box. Yeah, that's what that's
- 51:08probably written on there. Yeah.
- 51:09And they just kind of camp it out and they're just holding the
- 51:12gun at the doorway. Smart.
- 51:13This is actually really smart. I'm glad that they actually did
- 51:16like something like, you are like, this is not what people in
- 51:19a horror movie would normally do.
- 51:20This is the smart thing. But he panics because he's
- 51:23realizing he's never actually shot the shotgun.
- 51:25He's like, all right, we're gonna try and run out again.
- 51:27And she's like, wait, what? No, don't leave.
- 51:29You have the guy in it. Like she's just following him.
- 51:32And that's when the axe goes through the front door.
- 51:34And he does shoot the front door, which they've barricaded
- 51:37with some furniture. They do shoot a bigger hole
- 51:41through their front door, don't hit the person that's on the
- 51:44other side of it. So really all they've done is
- 51:46give them a wider, a bigger hole entry access, yes.
- 51:52I can't believe this is a like, deter them.
- 51:54Like if these guys have a shotgun in there, I'm not going
- 51:57in there. Well, are you planning to like
- 52:01home? Invade somebody.
- 52:02No at all. No.
- 52:03But if I'm doing that, if I'm doing a home invasion.
- 52:05I like the tone you used and you said no.
- 52:08You said it like a question. Moving on.
- 52:11So they they make it back into the bedroom now and this is
- 52:14where they're camping out in the closet.
- 52:15And this is where we see the Golden God.
- 52:18Well, we hear one of the strangers has gotten inside and
- 52:20is playing music. That's true.
- 52:22Yeah, once. Once the Merle Haggard.
- 52:24Yes, I love the the the use of music in this movie is really
- 52:27good. Yes, it really does add to it
- 52:29all. So Mike pulls up, calls James.
- 52:32This this almost looks like Dennis's.
- 52:34Like when? But it's it's a Jeep.
- 52:36It's not. AI know I wish it was the same
- 52:39card. Can you imagine if there was
- 52:40continuity? Here this is an AU.
- 52:45So yeah, he like rides in. He was in No.
- 52:49This is that episode where Dennis decides not to be a Land
- 52:51Rover guy anymore, you know, and he's just kind of a dork and
- 52:55gets like the garage beers with the dorky guys at their house.
- 53:00Is that an episode? Yes, cuz he's they you.
- 53:02They try to drive the Land Rover into the lake to get.
- 53:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's trying to sell.
- 53:07Yeah, he's like we've gotten 2 weird guys.
- 53:09Yeah, yeah. OK, so the golden God arise and
- 53:13calls James like, hey man, I'm here, you know, serving you a
- 53:17hand and fucking foot like always.
- 53:19And then as he's in the middle of the phone call, I guess a
- 53:21brick or something like goes through the windshield and it
- 53:25freaks him the fuck out. He gets out, he's like, what the
- 53:28fuck just happened? I would be in the same place.
- 53:30I don't know how I would react, but he seems less concerned as
- 53:34time goes on. I think he's still drunk because
- 53:36when? Because it's implied he was at
- 53:38the wedding also. Yeah.
- 53:40And when James had called him, he said, I'm sure you're asleep.
- 53:43And when you get this, you're going to be really hungover and
- 53:45annoyed at me. OK.
- 53:47Yeah. So I think he's probably still
- 53:48drunk. So he's, like, aware that this
- 53:50is a problem, but he's still got that, like, kind of drunk in
- 53:55bravado. Like he's like this.
- 53:57I'm sober enough to know this is wrong, but drunk enough to not
- 54:00clock how wrong. He's in that like he's in the
- 54:03zone right here. So he goes inside and Oh yeah,
- 54:07the doors busted open, furniture's rearranged, the fire
- 54:11is smoking smokily. Some creepy music.
- 54:13Creepy music is playing. What's going on?
- 54:17I don't know. And instead of like James,
- 54:22Kristen. Yeah, why didn't he not do that?
- 54:25He just like, tiptoed through the hell.
- 54:27Boom, Yeah. Yeah, you know what?
- 54:30I never even thought of that. Why did I would totally be doing
- 54:33that, calling out through the house like, hey James.
- 54:35Yeah, either that or I'm gonna be so silent I'm not gonna say
- 54:38anything at all because this is either an old crime scene or an
- 54:42active crime scene. I also love that shot of him
- 54:46walking down the hallway and you see like the bag head guy in the
- 54:50background just creeping up on him.
- 54:51And I like how bag head guy was like, wait, I know these people
- 54:54have a gun, let's see how this plays.
- 54:56Out. He's like, either he doesn't
- 54:58make it all the way down the hallway and I axe him, or I'm
- 55:00about to see something awesome. Either way, this guy's going
- 55:03down and yeah, that's what happens.
- 55:06Is that the second he's in the doorway, which good on James for
- 55:10this reflex, but then he goes, he was wearing a mask.
- 55:13He wasn't wearing a mask. He's also wearing a suit.
- 55:17Oh God. He doesn't say the suit part,
- 55:18but you know it's implied. They they sell this really well,
- 55:21like the immediate like regret and grief that they get as soon
- 55:26as they see that it's Mike is like really well done.
- 55:29Yeah. And it's like, and you can tell
- 55:30because that's James's best friend.
- 55:32And you can tell, like, I know we've been giving their, them
- 55:35and especially James a letter shape, but you can tell they've
- 55:37been together at least long enough that Kristen is fairly
- 55:39close to Mike, too. Yeah.
- 55:41Yeah. She's also very, very upset
- 55:43about what has just happened. So he's like, all right, well, I
- 55:48guess we're going to go try and get the radio in the barn to
- 55:51call for help. He's like you hide, I run.
- 55:55I can't believe that. Like, I mean, obviously it was
- 55:57an effective strategy because like it worked right there, but
- 56:00like, what are they going to do? Like axe to the wall and come
- 56:03get you, you know, like just stays.
- 56:05Yeah, like you. We understand now that shotgun
- 56:10through the doorway works. Yes, exactly.
- 56:13Calm yourself down and go back to your hidey hole.
- 56:16But. This, this is where it kind of
- 56:18gets to like dumb horror movie things.
- 56:20So he's like, let's split up. You stay here.
- 56:23I'm gonna go to the barn. He specifically tells her to
- 56:25hide, and for her hiding is crouching down on the back
- 56:28porch. Outside.
- 56:30Outside. Yeah, it's so stupid.
- 56:32This is, it gets a little dumb here.
- 56:34So he like he goes running and he is immediately caught.
- 56:37Yes, like he doesn't even make it halfway across the yard.
- 56:40Yeah, the gun's completely like out of the equation too.
- 56:42It doesn't even remember how. Yeah, there is.
- 56:45Like, I do think it discharges at one point because Kristen
- 56:48hears it and she tries to go out for James, can't see or hear
- 56:52him, and she's just kind of hunkering down on the porch for
- 56:55a minute and then she's like, oh, I guess I gotta go for it.
- 56:57Well, yeah, the back head man, we keep changing the way we
- 57:02refer to him, but back head man, he walks into the room and he's
- 57:05like approaching the outside patio.
- 57:08So she's like, fuck it, I'm booking it.
- 57:09Yeah, she trips along the way. She does.
- 57:12We see her crawl into the barn with the pin up girl just
- 57:16following her the entire time fucking with her.
- 57:18Yes, and she's kind of like scooting through the barn,
- 57:23trying to be quiet. This is a big barn.
- 57:25It's. Huge.
- 57:25It is so big and like there's there's aisles of equipment.
- 57:30Yeah. And then?
- 57:31What do they need all of this equipment for?
- 57:33They have not cultivated the land.
- 57:35You can see the axe is missing though, so this is where they
- 57:37got the axe that they're using, which is kind of a nice touch.
- 57:40Which, I mean, yeah, it's kind of a nice touch, but what was
- 57:43the axe? It's the only thing that had an
- 57:44outline around it because none of the other tools had outlined.
- 57:48Maybe they outlined, I don't know, like they're.
- 57:50Like we want to make sure the thing.
- 57:51Yeah. Like if they make it to the
- 57:52barn, like no, Yeah. Also, this is just a sensible
- 57:55way to store your tools and that way you know everything goes
- 57:58back in the correct spot. That's actually true.
- 58:00So she makes it to the radio. She successfully kind of call us
- 58:05the police, I guess. She's just trying to see if she
- 58:09can get anybody through on the radio, and when she does finally
- 58:12get somebody, we get pinups Smash.
- 58:16So she crawls back to the house. I don't know why she thinks
- 58:19she's actually getting away from them.
- 58:21I know. I mean, they're clearly letting
- 58:23you go. Yes, she sees all three of them
- 58:26in the yard and the cars are on fire, so she's like well, and
- 58:30then the three-year God again and she's like, well, she gets
- 58:33back inside. The strangers have lit all of
- 58:36the like mood lighting candles and they haven't put up the ice
- 58:41cream. The state of the ice cream gotta
- 58:44be melted. It's gotta be.
- 58:46Like liquid? At this.
- 58:47Point and we were arguing about this earlier this week this is
- 58:50not a case where you can just refreeze that ice cream and it's
- 58:52gonna taste the same it will not taste the same it will never be
- 58:55quality ice cream again it. Will never be the same.
- 58:57It won't. So yeah, we see here.
- 58:59Just kinda go in there. The back head man enters the
- 59:04room and doesn't notice her so she like slowly makes it into
- 59:08the pantry. I did like that moment of like,
- 59:10we see him enter the room and she's quietly in the background.
- 59:13Yeah, it was nice to have that little.
- 59:15Bit of. Reversal it.
- 59:16Is kind of cool. Yeah.
- 59:17So she, like, backs away and we just kind of see him wander
- 59:20around. He like just sits in the chair,
- 59:22catches his breath. The lights go out, she hides in
- 59:25the pantry, which again, I saw how tiny this little pantry door
- 59:29was. And I was like, oh, finally
- 59:32these people are relatable to the realistic goes into the
- 59:34pantry, and it's so deep. Like a walk in closet like.
- 59:38Fuck yeah. Upper middle class.
- 59:41That's this home. So yeah, he gets up and walks
- 59:46out and she thinks that she's all good.
- 59:48And then Boo. Yeah, we get the doll face.
- 59:51Yeah, and she's just fucking with the slats on the door and
- 59:54and. Then she just walks away.
- 59:55Yeah. And then Chris is like, all
- 59:57right, I guess I'll leave now. She's like, oh, clearly they're
- 59:59done. This is it.
- 1:00:01Yeah, this is I'm. I'm good now.
- 1:00:03So she tries to rent the bedroom, the lights come back on
- 1:00:06and she's like oh shit. She runs out into the hall and
- 1:00:09bag head man, just like clothes, lines her into the wall and
- 1:00:12knocks her out. Yep, and then we also see they
- 1:00:15toss James into the house too. He's all tied up, still alive.
- 1:00:19They kept him tied up outside where it was cold.
- 1:00:23And that grass was probably like that frosted dew because it's
- 1:00:26February. Yeah.
- 1:00:27Yeah. That man, he his joints are
- 1:00:30aching. I I wanted them to keep him
- 1:00:33insight of the ice cream at all times.
- 1:00:35That way it's like. You did this.
- 1:00:36Yeah, extra torture. Which?
- 1:00:38Is why we're killing you just because you're ruining this
- 1:00:40gallon of ice cream. So we see them now.
- 1:00:44It's daytime, They're tied to chairs in the living room.
- 1:00:47Who dressed? Who dressed Kristen?
- 1:00:51Did they redress? Her.
- 1:00:52Yeah, she's back in the bridesmaids dress.
- 1:00:53Did they? Yes.
- 1:00:54Wow, I didn't catch that. Yeah, and they put the
- 1:00:57engagement ring on her finger. How do they fit?
- 1:01:00They've like forced that on. Her.
- 1:01:01Yeah, that's the thing. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:01:02Like, and I'll say this as somebody who has tried to wear
- 1:01:05rings that are too small for her before.
- 1:01:07Usually if you're like, this is a little too tight, and then you
- 1:01:09get it over the middle knuckle, and then it'll be on and you're
- 1:01:12like, oh, this is great because for some people, the base of
- 1:01:15your finger's a little bit thinner than that middle knuckle
- 1:01:17part. Yeah.
- 1:01:18And then it's the getting it off that you don't have enough
- 1:01:20leverage to work with. And that's when you have to,
- 1:01:22like, grease it and butter it off.
- 1:01:24Yeah. Yeah, OK, that makes sense.
- 1:01:26Yeah, well, yeah, OK, you're right.
- 1:01:27And yeah, he's in his like a wedding suit too.
- 1:01:30I don't think he ever changed out of it.
- 1:01:32You're right, I don't think he did.
- 1:01:33You're right. Anyways, they're all tied up.
- 1:01:37They're just like asking them why they did it.
- 1:01:39Because you're home. And I like how Baghead was
- 1:01:42really annoyed that she answered that.
- 1:01:43She's like, we don't give this any reason.
- 1:01:46Yeah, we talked, Jella. We have talked about this.
- 1:01:50We agreed not to talk. That was what we talked about.
- 1:01:55It's like, it kind of feels like the Season 3 opener of Buffy
- 1:01:58Travis is officially on Season 3 now.
- 1:02:00Yeah. Where Willow is like trying out
- 1:02:02Slayer puns. And they're like, how do you
- 1:02:05like this big boy? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:08Oh my God. Can you imagine him saying that
- 1:02:10to them here? And they have like their moment.
- 1:02:16They they share, they exchange. I love you and she's.
- 1:02:20Like I no, but I want you to die.
- 1:02:24Easy. Yeah.
- 1:02:25I always, you know, give them something like make them die
- 1:02:27somewhere happy and they get stabbed in the tummy together.
- 1:02:32What if, like, they let them say their I love yous and they kiss,
- 1:02:36and then one of them comes up and just pulls the ring off your
- 1:02:39person's finger, throws that into the fire And ice cream,
- 1:02:44Yeah. And ice cream, Yeah.
- 1:02:46Yeah. So they they do a lot of
- 1:02:48stabbing and I guess at some point they untie them and dump
- 1:02:51them out of their chairs. Yeah, I guess.
- 1:02:53Yeah. I mean, it cuts away and we see
- 1:02:55them continue to be or we hear them continue being stabbed.
- 1:02:58We hear Mike's phone ringing later on and Kristen.
- 1:03:01I think this is unrated. Somehow, yeah, I think it is too
- 1:03:05this. Is not part of the theatrical.
- 1:03:07She is somehow still alive, so she's trying to crawl to it.
- 1:03:11And this is where we hear footsteps in the man's back.
- 1:03:14And like, her acting here is so effective because it's just
- 1:03:17like, you see that instant, like, oh, Rob, please don't
- 1:03:19hurt. Me anymore and like her.
- 1:03:20Body posture and her like little desperate moans are just so
- 1:03:24perfect. She yeah, she did a good job
- 1:03:26with it. And he?
- 1:03:27Just takes the phone. Yeah, that's all he did.
- 1:03:28He just like, walks over her and like, takes the phone.
- 1:03:31You can't have it. Yep, you're bleeding out.
- 1:03:33Yeah. And then we see the the
- 1:03:36Jehovah's Mormons, Yeah, walking their bikes down the road.
- 1:03:42They're tired of riding, man, you know?
- 1:03:44The truck pulls up and Dollface gets out and asks for your
- 1:03:49pamphlets. This is like what you don't do
- 1:03:52if you want to get away with a murder, you don't give your face
- 1:03:56to potential witnesses that will like say, hey, I saw a truck
- 1:04:00drive by and these people stop by and like, I this is what they
- 1:04:04look like. And I don't know if like we're
- 1:04:06meant to see that maybe doll faces like newer to their little
- 1:04:10family because we hear pan up say next time will be easier.
- 1:04:14Oh, I thought so. I wonder if she's like having a
- 1:04:16crisis of faith or if she's just really deranged and wants to
- 1:04:19like read the pamphlet or whatever.
- 1:04:21I thought she was deranged and just wanted to read the
- 1:04:23pamphlet. Yeah, but I like your thought.
- 1:04:25I think that that makes a lot of sense, actually.
- 1:04:28Well, they drive off and the kids, as we saw before, find the
- 1:04:33scene. And this time we see I'm
- 1:04:36probably Jordan here, walk up to Kristen and Kristen just screams
- 1:04:41in his face. Yep, Yep.
- 1:04:42And that's the end of the movie. All right, I'm still getting I'm
- 1:04:46going to keep it at 9.75. I think maybe if we didn't have
- 1:04:49like their super speed, it could be a ten.
- 1:04:53Yeah, that's that's the only thing that I can't logically
- 1:04:55explain. Yeah, the movie is so grounded
- 1:04:57that when it does these out there things, it's a little bit
- 1:05:00more jarring, I guess. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:05:03I'm keeping mine at 10 because, like, this movie does exactly
- 1:05:07what it went for. Like, it's so fucking scary.
- 1:05:10It's tense, like it's a it's a movie that's really easy for you
- 1:05:15to, like, get caught up in. Yeah, Talia was so stressed the
- 1:05:19whole time watching this. She was trying to eat my
- 1:05:20clipboard. That's how it.
- 1:05:22Started yeah, she's. An emotional eater, she was
- 1:05:24like. Right, I need to.
- 1:05:25Eat this. And she laid between us the
- 1:05:28whole time. I think Talia thinks this is
- 1:05:31super scary. She doesn't like strangers.
- 1:05:35She will not invite them inside. I think she'd give it a 10.
- 1:05:42I think she would too. Yeah, this is like her worst
- 1:05:44nightmare right here. She said if these people had a
- 1:05:48dog, this never would have happened.
- 1:05:50The dog would have just barked and scared the strangers away.
- 1:05:53She's probably right. Probably.
- 1:05:54Especially if they had a bark like Talia's bark Scary bark.
- 1:05:58Yeah, her bark is terrifying. Yeah.
- 1:05:59I just think about that time that my senior year of college
- 1:06:03when my roommate's apartment got broken into and the person heard
- 1:06:07Winnie barking the. Tiny little dog.
- 1:06:09Yeah. What you guys can understand
- 1:06:10about Rich and Neiner's is that she has a Shih Tzu Pickanese mix
- 1:06:14and weighed all of like 15 lbs but.
- 1:06:17She didn't have a ferocious bark either.
- 1:06:18Yeah, no, she barked. Exactly what you would expect a
- 1:06:21Shih Tzu Pickanese to sound like.
- 1:06:24Yeah, she still saved us that day.
- 1:06:26So. Zoe's old warrior.
- 1:06:28I'm just gonna go ahead and say James for digging into that ice
- 1:06:32cream. And like leaving the mess out
- 1:06:35afterwards for somebody else to. Deal with.
- 1:06:36Exactly. Yeah, because that's what Zoe
- 1:06:38does all the time, OK. And Zoe has also like tried to
- 1:06:43propose at really bad times and like, she doesn't.
- 1:06:46So read The Emotional Room. Yeah, now is not the time.
- 1:06:49Yeah, yeah. Just not ready yet.
- 1:06:54Who'd you relate to? Oh, man.
- 1:06:57OK, so I need to tell you a story.
- 1:06:59OK? I had friends in high school who
- 1:07:02were Mormons. Oh, OK.
- 1:07:04It wasn't really ever, like, discussed.
- 1:07:07Yeah, like, yeah, we're Mormon. OK, whatever.
- 1:07:10But I do think that after high school, they put my phone number
- 1:07:15like on some sort of contact list because I remember as a
- 1:07:17fresh and I got a call from somebody that was like, hey, is
- 1:07:20this Jesse? And I was like, yeah, who is
- 1:07:22this? And I was like such and such.
- 1:07:23I'm with the Church of Latter Day Saints and I was like,
- 1:07:26that's cool. And in my head, like, I was just
- 1:07:30thinking that this guy just had my number and I didn't question
- 1:07:33where it came from. And he's like, what do you know
- 1:07:36about the Church of Latter Day Saints?
- 1:07:37I was like, not much. And I'm here trying to be open
- 1:07:41minded and learn more. And he was like, well, do you
- 1:07:43ever feel lonely? And I was like, no, are you
- 1:07:45lonely? I talked to this guy for 45
- 1:07:49minutes. He's like, do you want a little
- 1:07:51travel booklet of, like some of the information about the Church
- 1:07:54of Mormon? And I was like, yeah, sure.
- 1:07:56I never got my pocketbook. He I think he wanted out of that
- 1:08:00situation. So I think I like out friendly
- 1:08:04the person who was supposed to like witness Mormonism to me
- 1:08:07just because I naively didn't understand that he was trying to
- 1:08:11convert. Me, I love the idea of you
- 1:08:13feeling so bad for this guy where you basically tell him
- 1:08:15like, man, you need God. Like, do you need a book, man?
- 1:08:19Do you need like, do you? You sound like you're in a bad
- 1:08:22place. So in that in that way, I relate
- 1:08:25to dolphins, OK. That's a story I haven't heard
- 1:08:28from you yet. Wow, I'm so proud of.
- 1:08:34You. I wasn't even doing it
- 1:08:35intentionally. I was just like, oh man, this
- 1:08:37man's lonely and he's trying to talk to me about his religion.
- 1:08:39I'll just talk to him for a little bit.
- 1:08:42I related to James only in the sense that I am bad about
- 1:08:46collecting the mail. I will leave a shit in the mail
- 1:08:49in the mailbox until it needs to be collected all at once.
- 1:08:52And then it's also really bad because I just generally for
- 1:08:55some reason assume you have checked the mail, so I have.
- 1:08:58No reason to go out to the mailbox anymore.
- 1:09:00I'm working from home now, you know?
- 1:09:01Like it's just like, why would I be out there?
- 1:09:04Yeah, yeah. And then the mailman gets
- 1:09:07frustrated with us sometimes. We had the mailman leave us a
- 1:09:09message in our mailbox. One time not to park the
- 1:09:11mailbox. We've got passive aggressive
- 1:09:14mailman, we really do. I started getting passive
- 1:09:16aggressive with them back whenever they give us like
- 1:09:18something from the wrong address.
- 1:09:20Used to be like, leave a little note like, you know?
- 1:09:23Return to center. Yeah, but now I just like, put
- 1:09:25the flag back on. Yeah, because not.
- 1:09:27You see, our names are written right in here.
- 1:09:30You started them? Yeah.
- 1:09:33OK. So we've already got our
- 1:09:35tagline. Yes, don't talk to strangers.
- 1:09:37Yeah, that. I like that.
- 1:09:40That's a good one. So let's do a dream sequel then.
- 1:09:43OK, yes, we're assuming that pray at night.
- 1:09:47Did not. Yes, we're not talking about
- 1:09:49that. Yeah, I honestly like, I want to
- 1:09:54see them do this again, but I want them to kind of like get a
- 1:10:01little fancy with it, OK? Like they're kind of honing in
- 1:10:04their skills and maybe they take in like another little like.
- 1:10:084th. Street rat.
- 1:10:10Yeah, like to. Join them so you want to
- 1:10:12actually see more from their perspective rather than the
- 1:10:15victim's perspective. I'm not saying that I don't want
- 1:10:18it to be from the victim's perspective, because I do think
- 1:10:20that that's kind of important for us, Yeah, for like the
- 1:10:24audience to relate. But I want US is the audience to
- 1:10:28know like what their rough edges were in the first movie, and I
- 1:10:30want to see them fancy it up in the second.
- 1:10:32Movie I think you still need. Redemption for the ice cream.
- 1:10:36I want to see them put something back into the fridge or freezer
- 1:10:38in this next house. It's like in those Marvel movies
- 1:10:41where like at the end credits is like Blank will return, Iron Man
- 1:10:44will return and Avengers, like this time it's like ice cream
- 1:10:47will return in strangers. Too, I'm thinking more of the
- 1:10:50end of What is it, Fast 8 Fate of the Furious, where we see
- 1:10:55Statham as with the punching. Bag Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:59OK. Well, see, I think you gotta
- 1:11:01keep the mystery there a little bit so you can shed some light,
- 1:11:03but still keep them mysterious. Have it in a populated area.
- 1:11:11Yeah, have it in a city. Yeah, this is after they've got
- 1:11:14a few of these under their belt. Yeah, and this is how we're
- 1:11:17gonna see them. Fancy it up?
- 1:11:18How are they adapting to the city environment?
- 1:11:20They have to up the ante for themselves because it's just
- 1:11:23not. Starting at boring.
- 1:11:24Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 1:11:25So let's risk it a little bit. Let's do it where there's
- 1:11:28people. Are in and then it kind of adds
- 1:11:30to that because one of the things about this movie is that
- 1:11:31the final death happens like when it's daylight outside and
- 1:11:34daylight is supposed to be when you're safe.
- 1:11:36Yeah, exactly. That's when they finally die.
- 1:11:38And it should be the same, like, you know, you're in a more
- 1:11:41populated area. You should be safe.
- 1:11:43Like, your neighbors can see you and you have somebody always
- 1:11:47right there. And you shouldn't feel alone and
- 1:11:49isolated as you're being murdered.
- 1:11:50So yeah, I agree. All right.
- 1:11:52I think that that could be interesting.
- 1:11:55What would Dom do? What would Dom do?
- 1:11:59Well, he would have stolen that truck and he's.
- 1:12:01Driven off, that's the thing. We saw at one point James go out
- 1:12:04to the truck and he was unable to Hotwire it, so he couldn't
- 1:12:08get out of there. Dom could Hotwire that truck.
- 1:12:10Yes, he would RIP off like the cover and like do all of this
- 1:12:14shit with the engine and saw some Nos.
- 1:12:17And he would have known how to shoot the shotgun.
- 1:12:20Because he shotguns his weapon. This is a movie tailor made for
- 1:12:24Dom. And he wouldn't propose at a
- 1:12:25wedding. Yeah, no, he wouldn't be in
- 1:12:27this. He wouldn't be in this position
- 1:12:29in the first place. Did you know what he knows?
- 1:12:31His girlfriend. He knows that Letty wouldn't
- 1:12:33have said yes to that shit. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:35And. He would have also recognized
- 1:12:36that it would be rude because your friends are your family and
- 1:12:39you don't disrespect your family.
- 1:12:40You don't upstage family, right? That's what he would say, yeah.
- 1:12:45So yeah, this is an easy win for Dom right here.
- 1:12:47Yes, there's This is like a cold open to a fast and.
- 1:12:51Furious year, right? Yeah, we.
- 1:12:53Don't. It doesn't even get main plot
- 1:12:55treatment. I think though if OK so treated
- 1:12:58as a cold open, we still get him racing the strangers.
- 1:13:01Oh yeah, cuz like they have like a.
- 1:13:03But he like kind of races them in a way that it forces them off
- 1:13:06the road and they wreck and explode and then they're just
- 1:13:08gone. We don't have to worry about
- 1:13:09them for the rest of the. Movie fantastic.
- 1:13:11There we go. We got it.
- 1:13:13All right. OK, so I guess this is time for
- 1:13:16reviews. OK, All right, so I pulled us.
- 1:13:23AII knew that you liked this movie.
- 1:13:25Well, didn't enjoy watching it, but I know that you recognize.
- 1:13:28It Yeah, I like the movie itself, I just can't watch it
- 1:13:31very. Often, so I got a three out of
- 1:13:3310 on IMDb. It's titled a film as
- 1:13:36expressionless as its mass killers.
- 1:13:38Oh boy. This is reviewed in 2017, so
- 1:13:40pretty far removed from the release.
- 1:13:43Home invasion horror seems to have enjoyed a resurgence as of
- 1:13:46late. The Strangers one of a handful
- 1:13:48of similar titles to hit cinemas in recent years.
- 1:13:52OK, just recapping a bunch of other ones.
- 1:13:54The Strangers attracted a little controversy after supposedly
- 1:13:57being based on True story. It's still unexplained Murder in
- 1:14:00which a woman and three kids were brutally killed in their
- 1:14:02own home one night by, I suppose, Strangers without a
- 1:14:04motive. Sad truth is that the true
- 1:14:06story, which I read about online, is far more interesting
- 1:14:09than this cliched, boring and frankly forgettable attempt at
- 1:14:12horror. Heck, even the behind the scenes
- 1:14:14footage on the DVD was more interesting than the film
- 1:14:16itself. The problems with this film are
- 1:14:19tenfold. The entire lack of a plot
- 1:14:20doesn't help, unless you count the expository.
- 1:14:24Yeah, expository 1st 10 minutes, which introduces a central
- 1:14:27couple who are so caught up in themselves that you instantly
- 1:14:31dislike them. From then on, minor events are
- 1:14:34dragged out for endless minutes as the characters face a cat and
- 1:14:37mouse game with masked attackers.
- 1:14:39Plot points are 10, sometimes 20 minutes apart, and between then
- 1:14:43we just get ominous music and noises on the soundtrack.
- 1:14:47Can you say repetitive? It's as if the film makers saw
- 1:14:49the last 10 minute showdown between Jamie Lee Curtis and
- 1:14:52Michael Myers and Halloween and decided to expand it into a
- 1:14:55feature length. I'm not saying this concept
- 1:14:58can't work. Indeed, some films featuring
- 1:15:00just a couple of characters in a room worked very well, then did
- 1:15:04it expertly building tons of atmosphere without ever showing
- 1:15:08much. Which that is a good movie it
- 1:15:10is. It draws a lot of comparisons to
- 1:15:11this. The newcomer who made this film,
- 1:15:14Brian Bertino, seems to have no skill when it comes to suspense,
- 1:15:17world building or scares. We just get endless repetition.
- 1:15:21The first time we hear somebody knocking on the door is creepy.
- 1:15:24The next End Times isn't. There's no twist ending, no
- 1:15:27catch, just mundane stuff everywhere you look as cliche
- 1:15:30piles on cliche before the non ending that makes you think is
- 1:15:34it? Is that it?
- 1:15:35Liv Tyler is poor as the heroine in the in peril speedman.
- 1:15:39Featureless and wooden, the masked bad guys have the
- 1:15:43potential to be scary if the look of the main one hadn't been
- 1:15:46copied from the orphanage. I hear a sequel is to follow,
- 1:15:50but my question is why? This is about as bland, non
- 1:15:53scary and predictable as movie making gets.
- 1:15:55A film as as expressionless as its masked killers, all right.
- 1:15:59Here's the thing. I will say one thing I've
- 1:16:02noticed about a lot of like, slashers is that when we're
- 1:16:08taking notes, I realize that a lot more of the back and forth
- 1:16:11makes sense because you're like, Oh, well, they're going back
- 1:16:16this way because they have to do this because they have to do
- 1:16:18that. Some movies you're aware of that
- 1:16:21as you're watching it. Some, it just seems like there's
- 1:16:22a lot of back and forth until you're forced to pay attention
- 1:16:24like we are when we're taking notes.
- 1:16:26And this is one of those that like, I'm taking notes, I'm
- 1:16:28like, oh, they have to do this because this.
- 1:16:30Yeah, when you're just organically watching the movie,
- 1:16:33it does feel like a lot of running around in the yard or a
- 1:16:35lot of back and forth in the house.
- 1:16:36Yeah. So I can kind of maybe see that
- 1:16:40I disagree with like them continuing to draw out the
- 1:16:44stress and tension because that's the whole point of this
- 1:16:46movie. Yeah, I thought it was
- 1:16:48effective. Like I don't think like
- 1:16:49repeated, like I think it escalates.
- 1:16:52It's not like it's the same thing over and over again.
- 1:16:54Like you see it ramp up until it becomes like them actually
- 1:16:59dying, which I think actually works.
- 1:17:01I agree it does wear thin towards the end, which is kind
- 1:17:05of what I was saying before. But like, the movie is so short
- 1:17:08that it really doesn't outstate welcome that long.
- 1:17:11Like, it it wraps it up when it needs to.
- 1:17:13Pretty much. Yeah.
- 1:17:14Yeah. But I, I couldn't understand why
- 1:17:16that like, you know, like if you need a little bit more than just
- 1:17:20like the little like moments like that repeated things
- 1:17:23happening to build tension, like if you needed to like, be new
- 1:17:27and different as the movie goes. Yeah.
- 1:17:29OK. This is a single occasion, you
- 1:17:31know? Yeah.
- 1:17:33Like, you know, I thought that they used it really well.
- 1:17:37All right, let's do some listener reviews.
- 1:17:39Yes, it is. So First off, we have Marnie,
- 1:17:44who says one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen.
- 1:17:48I think everybody can agree with that, especially you and your
- 1:17:51mom over on Instagram. We have a couple more here,
- 1:17:58Michael Lee Howard says. I remember watching The
- 1:18:00Strangers in the theater. Holy crap, didn't scare me.
- 1:18:02This is how you do a home invasion movie and make it
- 1:18:04memorable. Everything about this movie is
- 1:18:06done to pure terrifying perfection. 9 1/2 outs in.
- 1:18:10Nice. Yeah, I wish I saw this one in
- 1:18:12theaters. It was really stressful in
- 1:18:15theaters. I can see this being one that
- 1:18:17would maybe get like a re release sometime down the line
- 1:18:20that I would love to go catch. Yeah, it would be nice for them
- 1:18:23to do that with Strangers Chapter 2 coming out.
- 1:18:25I am glad they didn't do it with Strangers.
- 1:18:28Chapter 1. Yeah, Yeah, I am excited for
- 1:18:32Chapter 2. Yes, just to be clear.
- 1:18:35And finally, Joe Freaktron says not many movies put me on edge
- 1:18:40the way this original of The Strangers does.
- 1:18:42An isolated location with random acts of violence taps into some
- 1:18:45deep fears. Incredible attention makes this
- 1:18:47one unforgettable. Yeah.
- 1:18:50That's the thing, like the the tension is really the thing that
- 1:18:53stills the show in this movie. Like, yeah, like I said, like
- 1:18:56it's high stress, low body count.
- 1:18:57It's just like people doing scary shit.
- 1:19:00And it is relatable because, like, that's such a common fear.
- 1:19:04Just like these people, just like with masks on, attacking
- 1:19:07you, killing you at your house. OK.
- 1:19:09You know, nothing that can happen or nothing you can do.
- 1:19:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:13OK. So that's it for this.
- 1:19:15OK. This weekend we're going to have
- 1:19:18RTB or not to be, and that'll be Travis's pick.
- 1:19:21Yeah. So let's all hope.
- 1:19:24It'll be awesome, and always. It's not always awesome, but
- 1:19:27sometimes it is. And then my next pick, Listen,
- 1:19:30sorry to those of you on the budget Patreon, because this
- 1:19:32probably feels cheap because it was the other one that you had
- 1:19:35the option to vote. Between Oh, are you?
- 1:19:36Doing that, yes, because I just found out that there's going to
- 1:19:38be a sequel later this year, so we're going to talk about
- 1:19:41Influencer. Shit, I thought you were talking
- 1:19:44about joyride. That's how you're saying there's
- 1:19:46going to be a Joyride 4? No last.
- 1:19:47Month, Yes. OK, Influencer.
- 1:19:50Yeah, yeah. OK, cool.
- 1:19:51We're gonna do Influencer, that's on Shredder.
- 1:19:54It's just I really like the movie.
- 1:19:57It's been on my mind. Then I found out that a sequel's
- 1:20:00coming later this year, so I know that you guys.
- 1:20:03Voted between that and Pearl last month, so I'm sorry that
- 1:20:06like I'm immediately putting this into the rotation this
- 1:20:08month, but it feels correct. Hey, you know, it's it's all
- 1:20:11good, man. Yeah.
- 1:20:12You know, Yeah. That that's a good movie.
- 1:20:14It's an interesting one. I recommend you all check that
- 1:20:16one out if you haven't seen it yet.
- 1:20:17The. Track is real Diaby.

- 1:20:20All right. Cool.
- 1:20:22So yeah, you can find that on shutter for sure.
