- 0:02Here's your host, Alex S. Garrett. All right, well here on
- 0:07the Alex Scarrett Podcast Network, I'm gonna say the positive messaging for the ADA
- 0:14anniversary, for the actual anniversary tomorrow, July twenty six, that will be
- 0:19thirty three years. But I wanted to start this year with the message of
- 0:26accountability, adaptability, and accessibility. And here's where the accountability comes in for
- 0:33those that treat patients and for those that really care for those in the disabled
- 0:40community to have their greatest lives. And I believe everyone that's been treated that
- 0:47I know in this family, in this family, the disabled community has been
- 0:52treated with the utmost care and the utmost how do I say, I don't
- 0:56want to say customer service, but the utmost respect for the most part.
- 1:00I mean, there's a reason why my dad, my dad and I went
- 1:03to see the doctors every year, on the nurses every year on my birthday
- 1:07because they allowed and they they're hard work enable myself and the hard work of
- 1:12a lot of doctors and nurses over the years have enabled a lot of people
- 1:18in the disabled community to keep working. But that doesn't mean to say we
- 1:23can't keep some accountable. We can't keep the industry accountable doesn't mean that I
- 1:30can't talk about the medical misdiagnoses of nearly eight hundred thousand people in the United
- 1:38States which lead to disability or dare I say death. Here's the top five
- 1:46most misdiagnosed diseases yearly, stroke, sepsis, pneumonia, blood clots, and
- 1:53lung cancer. Again, we're gonna go to better and more positive stories I
- 1:59had on this podcast guest on the adaptability feature. But the eight hundred thousand
- 2:04people that are misdiagnosed really should be talked about today. Because while Peter Pitts
- 2:17told News Nation Now that doctors have their hands tied by insurance companies which refuse
- 2:23to cover the costs of tests diagnostic tests, so yes, insurance companies should
- 2:30be held accountable for this as well. There's also the in and out aspect
- 2:36of a doctor's office. Then a doctor literally sees a patient for about seven
- 2:42minutes and then that's it. And Pitts also put it on the patient to
- 2:50be part of the solution. But if you're not getting the right opinions and
- 3:00you feel something is wrong and you don't want to be the statistic of being
- 3:06misdiagnosed. It's a great lesson to just advocate for ourselves. I think a
- 3:15reason why the disabled community is able to thrive today is because of advocacy,
- 3:22not just politically, not just legally, but also also healthcare wise, to
- 3:29advocate for ourselves. Yes, our parents are able to be there for us
- 3:34as well, but at the end of the day, we do astart going
- 3:37to doctor's appointments by ourselves. Right at the end of the day, advocating
- 3:40for ourselves is how we got here thirty three years later as a whole disabled
- 3:47community. So while the medical misdiagnoses is disastrous, and we need to hold
- 3:54doctors accountable for our health care, and insurance companies accountab for our healthcare and
- 4:00dare i say, our medical equipment, it's a great lesson to advocate for
- 4:08ourselves. Remember how we got to this point of honoring the eighty eight thirty
- 4:13three years later. It's because of advocacy. It's because of allies of the
- 4:18able body community as well. And again, I don't let my disability define
- 4:23I don't let my disability and my leg define what I do. But dating
- 4:30within the disabled community has taught me Okay, there's a lot more awareness to
- 4:35be had, there's a lot more conversations to be had, there's a lot
- 4:41more research to be done on how to work and also get your medical services,
- 4:45which we'll discuss next with Jessica Tambor on the Adapting with Alex Garrett feature.
- 4:53And if you're on the One Leg Up feature listening to this, tune
- 4:55in to the links below. We're gonna have a great adapting three different segments
- 5:00in one show. We're gonna set that up for you and play him next
- 5:04here on the Alex Skarrett Podcast Network. But let's have one leg up for
- 5:11on advocacy, because if our doctors don't do it and won't do it and
- 5:18won't take the time to do it, let's make them take the time.
- 5:23Let's talk to them more. Let's remember how we're able to be here today.
- 5:30It's through advocacy, and through that advocacy, well lessen that number of
- 5:36misdiagnoses. On that note, it is a da day tomorrow and I have
- 5:43two very awesome friends joining me next, Jessica Tambor and then Danny Boyce,
- 5:49and then heck, I'll play a bit of a segment I did with m
- 5:51Ron. I'm sorry on the legal lowdown in our final segment today on the
- 5:57Adapting with Alex Skarett feature, stay too, and if you're on the one
- 6:00Leg Up feature, stay tuned for the link of it all in the description below
