- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, everybody, Brian Smith here with the IAM team series, and your Daily Influence.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: And today I'm gonna talk about
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: topic that is really important to all of us, and it's not just leaders really, it's all of us and that's trust.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, trust is one of the most talked about concepts in leadership and quite frankly, one of the least understood in practice.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: We tend to think of trust as something that's built through big moments, you know, big decisions, big promises, big wins.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: And we see that all the time, especially in front of us, in the media and across many loud areas of influence.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: But in reality, trust is not built in the big moments.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's built and often broken in the smallest ones.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: the mist follow up, the unclear expectations, and the subtle inconsistency between what we say, and what we do.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: And here's the truth, most leaders miss.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: Trust doesn't break loudly, it erodes wildly.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: Today, I am going to dive into,
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: and talk about why trust is really the new currency in leadership.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's the new currency, it actually always has been a currency in relationships, but it's the most important currency in leadership.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: And how it compounds or decays without us noticing.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: It takes us by surprise, oftentimes, we're caught off guard.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to talk about how to design trust intentionally.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: inside your organization.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: Look, most of us believe trust is broken through major failures, but you know it's not.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's broken through what we should really call micro betrayals or micro mistakes.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: Saying you're going to follow up and not doing it.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: Changing direction
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: in yourself or in your organization without explanation and you know you can hold to that then I don't need to explain myself but in teams and in areas of influence we really do in listening but not acknowledging setting expectations and inconsistently enforcing them
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I could rely on what's being said here.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: And trust doesn't disappear all at once.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: It begins to fragment Geeksbyte piece.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: So if it's not specific, if it's not measurable, if it's not consistently executed, it creates ambiguity and ambiguity to roads trust.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: We are all operating in this speed-driven environment.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: I say this so often our biggest chapter in finally I am team is called Slow Down.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: Our company mascot is a slot to remind us to slow down.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: And when we operate at least speed-driven environments, we are making fast decisions, we are having communications that are fast and furious and we are pivoting quickly.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: but speed without structure creates instability.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Leaders think they're being decisive, but teams experience it as inconsistency and inconsistency creates doubt.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: If it keeps changing, what should I actually commit to?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: Trust requires predictability of behavior, not perfection of outcomes.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: Speed is not the enemy, though I really wanted to slow down.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Unstructured speed.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: Instruction speed really looks like slowing down.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: So many organizations will say we want a culture of trust.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: We hear this ball the time.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: You can hear them talk about, you know, we have integrity.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: You can believe us.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: But culture is not build through intention alone.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: It is built through repeated, visible, consistent, bad, which means trust must be designed.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: Clear expectations need to be set.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: Defined communication rhythms, how ain't communicate?
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: communicating in a smart way, accountability that is consistent, but not emotional, and decision frameworks that people can rely on.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: Trust grows when people could predict how the system behaves, not just how the leader feels.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Trust becomes scalable when it's specific in its expectations.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Measureable.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: in the behavior and a repeatable across the people and your teams.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: And look, you can compound this trust because it does behave like interest.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: You don't see a building day-to-day, but over time it becomes exponential.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: The same as true in reverse, small inconsistencies left on a dress become systemic down.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: What's trust is low, everything becomes more expensive.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: Communication takes longer, decisions slow down, accountability weakens, and talent disengages.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: You are either compounding trustworthy or accumulating down.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: there is no neutral.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: So as you think about your leadership, as you think about your youth, individual's self, your team, your organization, don't ask yourself, do people trust me.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's really too broad.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Ask yourself, where might I be unintentionally creating microal the trails?
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: Where has speed replaced structure?
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: And where can I design trust instead of hoping
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: In any system, it either produces results or it produces consequences and the most important part, it's always working.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: So look, if today's talk gave you something to think about, something to reflect on, or something to even apply to yourself or in your organization, that's the goal that's the objective we have here because influence isn't something we turn on and all.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you've enjoyed today's episode of Daily Influence, and I look forward to being with you again next time.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Have a great day.
