- 0:00I believe that there is a question that most of us carry into a
- 0:06room like this on a
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: day like this without really ever putting it into words.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: It's not really a theological question so much as a practical question,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: and it's one that I think is pretty urgent in most of our lives.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: The question is simply,
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Am I going to be okay?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: We ask it in different ways depending on the seasons that we are in.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We ask it when a diagnosis comes back that we don't particularly like,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: when a relationship that we have appreciated for years unravels,
- 0:53when a news cycle leaves us feeling like the world is spinning
- 0:59off its axis.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: We certainly have had a few of those lately.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: We even ask it in good days, okay?
- 1:11But today I want to point that question to the two texts that
- 1:18were read this
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: morning,
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: John 14 and Acts 7.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: where these stories,
- 1:26these people in these stories are hoping desperately that Jesus
- 1:32will answer this
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: question in the most direct way possible by saying,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: yes,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: everything is going to be fine.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Nothing bad is coming your way.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You are safe.
- 1:53But the texts do not say that exactly the way that we would
- 2:01like them to say it.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: The reason is because there are two different kinds of safety.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: There is temporal safety and there is timeless safety.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm using timeless intentionally instead of using eternal safety.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And you'll understand a little bit later why.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: There is temporal safety and there is timeless safety.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: And these are not the same thing.
- 2:40And the church has spent a lot of energy confusing one for the
- 2:46other,
- 2:46I think.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Temporal safety is what we usually mean when we pray for protection.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Keep the bad thing from happening to me.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Keep the danger away from my children.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Keep the church
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: safe from conflict and turmoil.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Keep my body from illness.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And these are not wrong prayers.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: They are honest prayers.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: But temporal safety is by definition temporary.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: It is safety inside of time.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Timeless safety is something different in kind, not just in duration.
- 3:41It is not temporal safety that sort of stretches out infinitely
- 3:48into the future.
- 3:51It is a security that exists outside of,
- 3:56above,
- 3:57and underneath the circumstances of our lives.
- 4:02And it is the kind of safety that Stephen experiences in Acts
- 4:08chapter 7 while the
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: stones are coming at him.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: He is not temporarily safe.
- 4:23he is dying and yet there he stands face shining eyes open to
- 4:33something that the
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: crowd cannot see praying for the very people that are killing him
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And this is not stoicism, this is not a coping mechanism for Stephen.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: This is a man who has found something that the stones cannot touch.
- 5:00Now we spent last week in John chapter 10 with Jesus describing
- 5:06himself as the
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: gate,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: the gate of the sheepfold.
- 5:12And the shepherd,
- 5:13if you remember,
- 5:14lay himself across the opening of that sheepfold at night.
- 5:19His body was the gate and anything trying to get to the sheep
- 5:25had to go through the
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: shepherd laying across as the gate.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: When Jesus says in John 14, do not let your hearts be troubled,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: He is not telling the disciples to pretend the danger isn't real.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: He is saying the gate is still in place.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I am still in the opening for you.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Whatever is coming, it is coming through me first.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And in three days, not even death will be able to hold that gate shut.
- 6:07Now it is important for us to remember as we read John that
- 6:12John is writing an
- 6:13account of Jesus' sayings and doings with the resurrection in
- 6:19his rear view mirror.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So that we might believe.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So that we might trust in times of difficulty
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: John also writes,
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: understanding that safety,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: the safety that Jesus offers is not the absence of suffering.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: It is the presence of the one who has absorbed everything,
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: all the worst suffering that could ever come to us,
- 7:01all the worst suffering that the world has to offer and has
- 7:04come out on the other
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: side.
- 7:09Acts 7,
- 7:1055-60 is one of,
- 7:13I think,
- 7:13the coolest and most troubling moments in the New Testament.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Stephen has just given the longest speech in the book of Acts.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And as I thought about having that read in church,
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I realized that if I did,
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: all of you would think,
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: oh my goodness,
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: is this speech ever going to end?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And you might think about stoning me as well.
- 7:43Stephen has just walked the council through the entire arc of
- 7:50Israel's story.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And then at the end, he sees a vision.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: The heavens open up.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: The Son of God's standing at the right hand of God.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And Stephen says, look, Jesus is standing with God at God's right hand.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Now, just a pause here.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Notice, Jesus is standing at the right hand of God.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Interestingly,
- 8:29there are about 30 or more instances where the New Testament
- 8:33talks about Jesus at
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: the right hand of God.
- 8:36But this is the only time that it says that Jesus was standing
- 8:42at the right hand of God.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: All the other cases, Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God.
- 8:50So some scholars read it that Jesus is rising to receive
- 8:56Stephen as a host rises to
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: receive an honored guest.
- 9:03Whatever the precise meaning or reason for this is,
- 9:07the message to Stephen is the same.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Stephen
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: You are not unseen.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: You are not abandoned by me in this situation.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: You are safe and you can speak the truth.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And he does.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And the stones, they still come.
- 9:37This is where we have to be honest about the gap between the
- 9:42safety that we ask for
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: and the safety that the gospel actually offers to us.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: We want God to stop the stones.
- 9:56But tradition tells us that Stephen gets something better than
- 10:01stopped stones.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: He gets an open heaven.
- 10:08he gets the face of Jesus standing looking at him in this
- 10:15terrible terrible time he
- 10:18gets the strength and the grace to say and pray as he dies Lord
- 10:27do not hold this
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: sin against them the man is being murdered
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: and he is free enough to pray for his murderers.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: That is something the temporal world cannot manufacture.
- 10:53Richard Rohr who's certainly one of my favorite author mentors
- 11:00in his book
- 11:01Everything Belong makes a claim that the foundation of the
- 11:06spiritual life is the
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: capacity to be present to what is
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: rather than constantly resisting or escaping it.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: He is not advocating for passivity.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: He is pointing towards a particular kind of inner freedom,
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: a freedom that comes not from circumstances improving but from
- 11:37Learning to rest inside of reality rather than constantly
- 11:43fighting against it.
- 11:45Rohrer writes out of the contemplative tradition and what the
- 11:50contemplatives have
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: always known is this,
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: suffering does not go away when we pray more or trust harder.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: But when we do those things,
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: something can shift in us,
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: and that changes our relationship with the suffering.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: The Franciscan tradition calls this accepting the given,
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: not celebrating the bad thing,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: not pretending it's not happening,
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: but allowing it to be
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: real without allowing it to become our whole reality.
- 12:36Now that sounds very woo-woo and abstract until you watch it
- 12:43happen in person,
- 12:46in real life.
- 12:48And then it is one of the most concrete and profound things you
- 12:55have ever seen.
- 12:58It is what Stephen looks like in Acts chapter 7 Face like an
- 13:10angel Eyes on what is
- 13:14real beyond what is visible Stone still coming and he still is
- 13:22free He still is
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: safe
- 13:28Contemplative practice in Rohr's mind is not about achieving a
- 13:33state of calm,
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: of sort of Zen calm.
- 13:38It is about learning to hold the tension between the world as
- 13:42it is and the world
- 13:44as God intends it without needing to resolve the tension before
- 13:51you can be at
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: peace.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: The peace is available inside the tension, not after it.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: This is precisely what Jesus is offering in John chapter 14.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Do not let your hearts be troubled.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: The original Greek word for troubled is the word that means stirred up,
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: agitated,
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: like water shaken out of its stillness.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Jesus is not saying the shaking will stop.
- 14:31He is saying there is something in you that can still be calm
- 14:38even when the water
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: is shaken,
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: if you know what you're grounded in.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: St. Patrick gave us a prayer to help us in these times.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Christ with me.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Christ before me.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Christ behind me.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Christ beneath me.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Christ above me.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Christ on my right.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Christ on my left.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And he goes on.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: In John 14, 2, Jesus continues.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: The translation of John 14,
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: 2 that most of us have grown up with,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: which was traditionally the King James Version,
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: uses the words house and mansions.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: My father's house has many mansions.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Have you ever heard that?
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Sure you have.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: These words have created a lot,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: in my opinion,
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: of misunderstanding over the centuries,
- 15:45most of which had to do with the size and the grandeur of these
- 15:51homes and mansions
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: becoming a kind of celestial real estate market.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: The actual Greek words here are okiya,
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: and Monet.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Sort of sounds like a Renaissance painter, right?
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: But no, Okia and Monet.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: So,
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: a more literal translation of the verse would be,
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: in my father's family,
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: there are many places for abiding.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Some scholars translate it as stopping places,
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: resting points along a journey,
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: the ancient equivalent of waypoints on a long road.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: What Jesus is describing is not an eternal heavenly place.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: He is describing accompaniment, presence.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: There are places of rest,
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: he says,
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: and presence prepared for you at every stage of the journey,
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: no matter what that journey looks like.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: You will not be left without a family and somewhere to belong.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: That reframing matters enormously for how we understand timeless safety.
- 17:22It is not a destination we finally arrive at after surviving a
- 17:28dangerous road.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: It is a series of abiding places.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Each one always prepared.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Each one always waiting for us.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: The safety and presence of God is not deferred to the end.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: It is present.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: at every waypoint along the journey.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Rohrer would say this is what contemplative practices open up for us,
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: the experience of abiding rather than always striving,
- 18:09being present in the now instead of always pushing towards the
- 18:14next tomorrow,
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: belonging rather than always seeking acceptance.
- 18:22everything belongs is not a vague spiritual sentiment it is a
- 18:28calm and a claim
- 18:31about the nature of reality that nothing is outside of God's
- 18:36presence that no
- 18:37moment in our lives is unsanctified that even the stoning is
- 18:44held within the safe
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: presence of God
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: May we too, like Stephen, see that reality in our difficult days.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: When we wonder, am I going to be okay?
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: And may we leave this place today knowing, yes, we will.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Amen.
