- 0:00What's up y'all? You're listening to the Extra
- 0:01Point College Football podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnes,
- 0:04joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:08Daniel, on today's episode we are going to talk through the
- 0:11state of college football. I think we we've mentioned it a
- 0:15good bit in the offseason, but here's kind of what we're going
- 0:18to go over is what's the state of our sport right now?
- 0:20How are things looking? What do we love about the sport?
- 0:24What's the state of NIL and the transfer portal?
- 0:27Where are things? Where do we see them going?
- 0:30What would be our perfect vision for the future for these areas?
- 0:33The College Football Playoff, the schedule for our sport right
- 0:37now, officiating and anything else that comes up, We're just
- 0:39going to bundle it into what's, you know, state of the Union
- 0:43count, what's the state of our country, state of college
- 0:45football, what's the state of our sport right now?
- 0:48I'm excited to dive in. Daniel, we look, I'm just going
- 0:53to say we've talked about a pre show.
- 0:54We're going to try our best not to sound like grumpy old men.
- 0:57So to begin, Daniel, give me your opening statement, theory,
- 1:02conclusion. What is the state of our sport
- 1:06in college football right now? Ladies and gentlemen, my fellow
- 1:10Americans. That's right.
- 1:12Dude, college football is great, all right?
- 1:15It's been great. It's great.
- 1:16It's awesome. Currently, I think that there is
- 1:20a lot of uneasiness. If I was going to give like one
- 1:24way to describe everybody, uneasiness, uncertainty, I think
- 1:29there's a ton of potential. And so I think that that's
- 1:33what's driving a lot of these decisions.
- 1:35And so right now, there's just a lot of change.
- 1:38And I don't say that flippantly. There's change, whether it be,
- 1:43you know, the NIL and the portal.
- 1:44And those almost have become buzzwords because they've
- 1:47changed. But for 150 years, nothing
- 1:49changed. And then the span of four years,
- 1:51things have changed extremely drastically.
- 1:54And, you know, it took all that, you know, we got to, you know,
- 1:58not to go too far back. But, you know, we got BCS 98.
- 2:02And then 2014 you get the College Football Playoff, four
- 2:05teams that still felt like a very gradual change.
- 2:09There has been very, I'll say volatility is a good way to
- 2:12describe it, like the market volatility.
- 2:14Things have changed so much each year going to the 12 team
- 2:17playoff and I'll transfer portal, all that stuff.
- 2:20I do get a sense that the market is somewhat coming to a
- 2:25correction. So we'll get into that a little
- 2:27bit and kind of get into some of the details, but there's just a
- 2:30lot of things that feel like they are loose ends that need to
- 2:35be tied up so that the sport can be preserved.
- 2:40And the things we love about the sport can remain that.
- 2:43And we can even improve upon things that we're not as good
- 2:47even when we, you know, loved it.
- 2:49And maybe they could even get better.
- 2:51So we talked about the schedule. We talked about all kinds of
- 2:54things. Yeah, I'm excited to see it.
- 2:56Daniel I think college football is the biggest it's ever been.
- 2:59More people are watching it than have ever watched our sport.
- 3:03And the on the field and on TV product is also the most
- 3:09entertaining it's ever been. And the sport's huge.
- 3:13And I still don't think that college football has hit its
- 3:16potential. I think it's very common to dip
- 3:18into a little bit about what I love.
- 3:20But, you know, I want to say at that point, it's the most change
- 3:23we've gone through, at least in our lifetime probably that the
- 3:26sports ever seen. Not all that's good change.
- 3:28I think some of it has been good.
- 3:31Daniel, I did a project in college at Kennesaw State Go
- 3:34Alice where I I forget what class was for, but I had to
- 3:39convince someone it was a lit class because I had to present
- 3:42like a persuading argument. But we had to make like a
- 3:45website videos like a semester long project, like kind of like
- 3:48our capstone thing. And I did mine on why college
- 3:52athletes deserve to be paid. And this was back in 2014 in the
- 3:57fall and I talked about how was a multi billion dollar a year
- 4:00industry. And it's funny because that
- 4:03season, Daniel, you and I are Georgia fans.
- 4:05And that was the season Todd Gurley, I suspended six games
- 4:09for 1200 bucks for signing autographs.
- 4:10And wasn't the guy who paid for the autographs also turned him
- 4:15in? Was that right?
- 4:17While anyway, that happens in the midst of me doing this
- 4:20project and I was convinced and I'm old school, Daniel, we're
- 4:22both old school and but I was convinced.
- 4:25I'm like college athletes have to be paid.
- 4:27It's and then of course, that happens in the middle of my
- 4:29project and I'm like that. So again, we've made some good
- 4:31changes. We've made some progress and the
- 4:33college athletes can be paid for not only their name, image and
- 4:37likeness, but pay for play as well, which I also argued for
- 4:40then. So a lot of change like you
- 4:42mentioned, but I do have hope for the future if the right
- 4:46people can get their hands on the steering wheel of our sport.
- 4:50And my caution I'll start with is there's a great book by Bill
- 4:55Connolly called I have to look on my shelf because forward
- 4:58progress. Thank you.
- 5:00I'm like, it's over there on the bookshelf.
- 5:02Bill Connolly's book for progress.
- 5:04He talks, he opens the book with NASCAR.
- 5:07And look, NASCAR's kind of had a revival the last couple years.
- 5:10But if you see why, it's because they're kind of going back to
- 5:12the roots. They're trying to re attract
- 5:14their old fan base because for years NASCAR said don't worry
- 5:19about the diehards. Those people will always be
- 5:21there. And slowly but surely they made
- 5:23a lot of changes. They made the sport
- 5:25unrecognizable to their biggest fans and their biggest fans
- 5:29walked away because they said don't worry about the diehards.
- 5:32They're never going to leave. I just want to my first caution
- 5:36and I'm going to we're going to dive into what we love is
- 5:39college football. Please don't say don't worry
- 5:41about the diehards. They'll never leave because I
- 5:43promise you, there's enough entertaining stuff nowadays that
- 5:46people, I think it would take a lot, a lot for people to walk
- 5:50away from college football again.
- 5:51It's the biggest it's ever been. But don't always assume your
- 5:55diehards will be there. I think that's where college
- 5:57football's at right now. Daniel, let's look.
- 5:59We're not just going to complain here for 60 minutes.
- 6:02What do you love about college football right now?
- 6:05Yeah. I mean, this is something that I
- 6:09love, especially being in the SEC footprint.
- 6:12I feel like being in the South, we can, it's not even, you know,
- 6:17there's some states like Louisiana where you can walk
- 6:20around and every house is an LSU house.
- 6:23And then in the state like Georgia, and especially in
- 6:26metropolitan Atlanta, I mean, they're every house could be a
- 6:29different, you know, allegiance. They could have gone to a
- 6:34different, you know, there's plenty of Auburn people in the
- 6:36state of in the state of Georgia, in the city of Atlanta,
- 6:38plenty of Alabama people, plenty of obviously Georgia Tech you've
- 6:42got, but any, anyone. So my favorite, it's truly the
- 6:46rivalries. I think that being able to argue
- 6:49for your team against somebody, to have a healthy hatred for
- 6:54someone else, their team. I mean, not like specifically
- 6:57them, but this, this is where hatred is welcomed.
- 7:00You're supposed to hate this team.
- 7:02You're supposed to want the worst for that team.
- 7:04You're supposed to want them to fire their coach, things like
- 7:08that. Traditions, pageantry, as you
- 7:11know, if I'm going to steal one from Kirk Kerb St. and Brent
- 7:15Musburger and all of them. But I think, I think just the
- 7:18the romanticized college football.
- 7:21I love opening weekend, You know, that Labor Day weekend, I
- 7:26feel like it's just so pure. There's so much going on, so
- 7:29much anticipation. Everybody feels like it's their
- 7:33year. Some people are lying to
- 7:34themselves, but it's definitely, you know, that.
- 7:38And then of course, rivalry weekend.
- 7:40Of course I mentioned rivalries, rivalry weekend after
- 7:43Thanksgiving. That's just like, you know,
- 7:46those kind of tent poles of the season just kind of feel like,
- 7:50hey, this is this is special. These can't go away.
- 7:54They need to stay, you know, and it it kind of like intertwines
- 8:00into your life. You know, it's not just a sport.
- 8:03It's like part of your, you know, family discussions.
- 8:06My family, we're always discussing college football, You
- 8:09know, we gather around, you know, Thanksgiving.
- 8:11It's like that's top of mind, you know, So I like especially,
- 8:16you know, in the South how it will be part of, you know, your
- 8:20family culture, your family history, rivalries.
- 8:24I mean, yeah, that's that's what I love about the sport.
- 8:28The regular season, every game feels like a big deal.
- 8:32Yeah, I mean, that that was something I was going to call
- 8:34out is Saturday's still still feel like ultra important in the
- 8:40moment. And when that feeling goes away,
- 8:43I think that's when I will start to love the sport less.
- 8:46And maybe in hindsight, we come record on Tuesday and we're
- 8:49like, man, that result felt so big.
- 8:52And it kind of didn't really matter as it comes to the
- 8:54playoff or at the end of the season.
- 8:55But I mean, Josh Pate continually says this.
- 8:58But when when the ball is spotted and it's third down and
- 9:02eight with 5 minutes to go in the 4th, how do you feel?
- 9:06And that still feels not only amazing, it feels the biggest
- 9:10it's ever felt. It still feels ultra important,
- 9:13ultra urgent. I think that more eyes on the
- 9:16sport has caused a lot of good things.
- 9:18Several of those things are look, more of the country is
- 9:22getting to see cool small towns, cool small college towns that
- 9:26are getting put on the national stage.
- 9:28And I hope that only increases and I hope more schools don't
- 9:31get left behind. We're not we're not talking
- 9:32about problems yet. Pullman, WA, we see you all
- 9:36right. We love you.
- 9:36More money equals better environments.
- 9:39These game day Staffs are having to compete with one another and
- 9:43improve their game day environments in stadium, not
- 9:46just to look good on TV, but also for the people there
- 9:49because they're competing with TV where millions more people
- 9:52are watching their games. And so more eyes equals more
- 9:55money equals better game day environments.
- 9:58And lastly, Daniel, there's more premiere Matt.
- 10:01There's there's several things I don't like about Coventry
- 10:03alignment. One of the things I do like is
- 10:05you are getting more premier matchups in conference and those
- 10:10games feel huge. I mean, I think about we've
- 10:12gotten in the last two seasons 3 versions of Georgia, Texas, and
- 10:17that has felt like a new rivalry almost and it has felt ultra
- 10:20important. The SEC on ABC, I didn't
- 10:23mention, you know, obviously a big CBS fans, you know, all
- 10:26those years, yes. But then we always haven't.
- 10:28You know, love the music and all that stuff, but truthfully, the
- 10:31SEC realigning and going to ABC, that three window, you know,
- 10:39sometimes it's like those are the best three games of the day
- 10:42and it's all three are on ABC. And you know, I'm going to flip
- 10:46around because I'm going to check everything out.
- 10:48But the magnitude of those games like you're saying?
- 10:51Yeah, yeah. I mean, Ohio State, Oregon,
- 10:56Oregon, Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma, like these are premier
- 11:00in conference games that are deciding the fates of
- 11:03conferences. Michigan, USC, like premier
- 11:07brands, they're going to get played more often.
- 11:09I think that's been a positive. Part of comfort tree alignment
- 11:12is I love these premier matchups in conference, but specifically
- 11:17and the Big 10 and the SEC again, don't love the problems
- 11:21they caused. But I will agree that hey, if
- 11:23you're asking me what do you mean you don't love Michigan US,
- 11:26Of course I love Michigan USC like of like of course I do.
- 11:31Of course I'm going to watch is our.
- 11:32Uniform matchup of the year? Yeah, come on.
- 11:36Come on now. That's why I called that one.
- 11:38Out nice. A lot to love about college and
- 11:42and I kind of said like, what do we love right now?
- 11:44And I was kind of doing based off the chain.
- 11:46There's so much more I love by college football, Daniel.
- 11:48I love that there's still, like you mentioned, pageantry,
- 11:51tradition, uniforms, cheerleaders, uniforms,
- 11:56tailgating. Like there's something about the
- 11:59environment in on a college football Saturday, especially in
- 12:02person and to surround the game that you don't get with the NFL
- 12:06because tailgating on a college campus is so different than in
- 12:11some lame parking lot stadium. You know, MetLife is this way.
- 12:16AT&T Stadium's this way where it's just like stadium built on
- 12:19a huge slab of pavement with 1000 parking places.
- 12:22And that's where your tailgating is.
- 12:24And that's not as cool as, you know, being on North campus and,
- 12:29you know, sailgating at Tennessee and Washington and,
- 12:33you know, insert your college campus here.
- 12:35And the pageantry and the tradition of the sport is still
- 12:39unrivalled by any other sport in this country.
- 12:43And it's what makes college football really special.
- 12:45And you mentioned rivalries. Absolutely.
- 12:48Fight songs, uniforms, yes, we're gonna have plenty of
- 12:51tradition stuff to talk about on another episode.
- 12:53So lots of love about college football.
- 12:56Daniel. Let's dive into one of the heavy
- 12:58hitters. 2 of the biggest changes in the last few years of
- 13:00our sport have been NIL. And let's also just call it what
- 13:05it is, paying players to play college football, right?
- 13:09Players being able to make money and also the transfer portal.
- 13:12And instead of this being an incremental change where OK
- 13:15players can now make money for autographs and OK, now there's a
- 13:20one time free transfer rule. And now it was just kind of
- 13:23like, whoops, the incident delay has mishandled this for the last
- 13:27two decades. Plus floodgates opened.
- 13:29We kind of get pay for play and free agency every offseason and
- 13:34actually until last year, twice a year in college football.
- 13:37Right. You can go do whatever you want.
- 13:39Their honor. There are no rules.
- 13:41And I think these have been the two biggest changes to our sport
- 13:44ever. Yeah.
- 13:45Let's start with Nil. Daniel, where's Nil right now?
- 13:48What, what, what? What do you like about Nil?
- 13:50What do you what do you not like?
- 13:52What do you wish we could change?
- 13:54If you're in charge and you can kind of cast the vision for for
- 13:56our sport here. Well, I think that, you know,
- 13:59we've for so long wanted to be able to pay players and that's a
- 14:04good thing. That's good, especially with how
- 14:07much is been going on. And you know, you start to look
- 14:10at all of the rules of amateurism of the past where
- 14:13like these guys couldn't even have like a part time job if
- 14:16they were on scholarship and they couldn't, there are so many
- 14:19like little things they couldn't do that would cause them to, you
- 14:22know, be ineligible. It it was one of those things
- 14:26where it was obviously needed to change.
- 14:29Now, nil is what it was called and as far as you know for name,
- 14:33image, likeness, that was something that we were expecting
- 14:35to change. It has turned in exactly what
- 14:38you talked about, where is pay for play, which is different.
- 14:41I just think that there needs to be more regulation and that's
- 14:44going to come from a governing body.
- 14:45There needs to be regulation, there needs to be
- 14:47accountability. And you know, the market's going
- 14:50to correct itself to a certain extent.
- 14:52Like some of these boosters are not going to be like, boy, I
- 14:54would love to just give you $3,000,000 every year in
- 14:57perpetuity so that we can sign this guy and sign that guy and
- 15:03then have a, you know, losing season or something.
- 15:05Like, you know, there's going to be fatigue that happens and will
- 15:08cause some course corrections that will take time and, you
- 15:13know, a lot of this money being spent.
- 15:14But if we can get some sort of regulation, I'm not saying that
- 15:18necessary has to be a salary cap, but every other sport that
- 15:21deals with money like this, there is a salary cap or a
- 15:24luxury tax in baseball. So you got to kind of get that
- 15:27kind of a mindset or and it's both ways accountability.
- 15:31These college players are taking money and then leaving and then
- 15:35they're, you know, you're starting to see them get sued by
- 15:38their previous school. There's a lot of legalities that
- 15:42are happening. I think that nil and transfer
- 15:46portal can work together right now they're working against each
- 15:49other and they are causing all these additional problems.
- 15:54So you know, the ways you can get to work together, which you
- 15:58know, I know we're not talking transfer portal, but I would, I
- 16:00would say that, you know, if you did go to a one time transfer
- 16:02rule, like 1 portal window a year, which is what they've
- 16:05already done, you know, good on them for like making the step
- 16:09towards that. You could fix signing day, but I
- 16:11think ultimately if you could get it to, hey, you get one free
- 16:15transfer is what it should have been out of the gate instead of
- 16:19free for all because it went from you can't transfer unless
- 16:22you're going to sit out a year to, you know, you can transfer
- 16:27if you're unless, as long as you have a hardship or if you're a
- 16:31graduate, you can transfer and and play right away to then now
- 16:35with the transfer portal, they're like just do whatever
- 16:37you want all the time. So if we could do a one time
- 16:40transfer, I think that that's fair.
- 16:43That way kids make mistakes. They make hasty decisions at 18,
- 16:47I don't think they should be penalized for making that
- 16:49decision. They get one free transfer and
- 16:52then when you graduate, you can then transfer again.
- 16:55I think that also incentivizes them to stay in school and to
- 16:58kind of finish what they started because as the old NCAA
- 17:01commercials say, not everybody goes pro and football.
- 17:03They GoPro and something else. So keep that in mind.
- 17:06And then, you know, you do have some assurances in there like if
- 17:09your head coach gets fired or quits, like you're going to be
- 17:12able to have an additional like you get to go in the portal and
- 17:16and have a free transfer. I think that's fair.
- 17:19So then I think that just limits it puts just a small amount of
- 17:22guardrails on it and it basically stops all this
- 17:25indecision. And I think it also forces the
- 17:28schools to be more loyal and who they're taking right now.
- 17:31You've got schools that are pushing guys into the portal
- 17:34because they're wanting to bring in another guy.
- 17:39And I think it's just de emphasizing high school
- 17:41recruiting and overall it could ultimately lead to the decay of
- 17:44the sport if they don't do something about it.
- 17:46So I think if they do that, it would cause there to be maybe a
- 17:50contract for the NIL where it's a multi year thing and maybe
- 17:55they are paying players as they get older rather than paying
- 17:58the, you know, it's not sustainable to pay freshmen more
- 18:01than you're paying a senior unless they are the main
- 18:03contributor. I should say pay a starter
- 18:06versus, you know, an incoming backup freshman or something
- 18:09like that developmental guy. So anyways, that's my long
- 18:12preamble. I think that it's going to take
- 18:14a governing body to put these things into place, but that's
- 18:17what I would do. Yeah, I have to begin my
- 18:22argument with we need a CBA and a governing body and enforcement
- 18:26because right now we don't have that.
- 18:28And here's the thing Daniel, I have been anti government
- 18:31intervention for the whole time. I'm like anything but Congress
- 18:34getting involved. They do ruin a lot of stuff.
- 18:37They read a lot of stuff and at this point I'm like anything to
- 18:41get involved. Like if anyone wants to get
- 18:43involved in ads and guardrails, by all means.
- 18:46I don't think any fan or writer or pundit in the sport can look
- 18:51at the camera or look at me in the eyes and be like, no, like
- 18:54this is exactly how it should be.
- 18:56This is good. This is good for the sport.
- 18:58Everything about this is perfect.
- 19:00We don't need to change a thing. I don't think it even if you're
- 19:02the beneficiary of good Portal classes or you are Texas Tech
- 19:08and you can just outspend everybody in your conference to
- 19:11go build a roster that can pretty much walk into the Big 12
- 19:14championship game every year. I don't even think those fans
- 19:18would tell you that they love the fact that there's no rules
- 19:21and no enforcement, right? And so we need enforcement.
- 19:25As you said, that gets a great point.
- 19:26And I'm I'm kind of tying these two at this point with both
- 19:29together in my own portal is that we need public contracts.
- 19:33And I think this only comes unfortunately with a CBA with
- 19:37collective bargain like the NFL has where either the conference
- 19:42or we're not going to talk about this today.
- 19:45But and I I wasn't planning on it.
- 19:47Whatever is next, whether it's a Super League and it is the Big
- 19:5210 and the SEC and it is called like, you know, the college
- 19:57Football League or whatever. C what is that college CFL?
- 20:02Nope. That's the thing.
- 20:03That's already anyway. There is a league of college
- 20:05football. Where the money is coming, just
- 20:08like the NFL. You know when you get paid by
- 20:10the Falcons, your check actually comes from the NFL, not the
- 20:14Falcons. Because anyway that that's how
- 20:16they can enforce contracts. There's no free trades.
- 20:20Everything is collectively bargained between the NFLPA and
- 20:23the NFL anyway. We need something like that in
- 20:25college football so that we can know what these contracts are
- 20:28because players are signing multi year contracts.
- 20:31We just don't know it. We have no idea what the buyout
- 20:33is. We have no idea what they're
- 20:35getting paid. Everything is kept in secret,
- 20:37which is why I think I have a lot of frustration.
- 20:39And I think why a lot of fans have a lot of frustration is,
- 20:42you know, you see these articles where it's like we talked to 10
- 20:45GMs from college football teams and anonymously, here's what
- 20:49they had to say. And they think this school is
- 20:51paying $40 million for a roster. And, you know, spending has
- 20:55gone. This is a static spending.
- 20:57The the average cost for a roster went up 50 to 60% this
- 21:02year. Fans don't know and honestly
- 21:04don't care. The NFL has done a really good
- 21:06job of making fans actually care about this stuff.
- 21:08And you're a lot more likely with this than I am, Daniel, Of
- 21:11like salary caps. And can you meet the cap?
- 21:14And they were supposed to be a salary cap, Daniel.
- 21:16But none of it's being enforced because there's not a unifying
- 21:19governing body. There needs to be 1.
- 21:22And I'm not counting on the NCAA to be that.
- 21:24I think they they made their bed.
- 21:26They're gonna have to lie in it. The NCAA is dead.
- 21:29There's nothing they can do. So that's why overall to say the
- 21:33sport, Danny, I want to Fast forward to the next chapter,
- 21:36whatever's next. My first thing is we need public
- 21:38contracts and like you said, with enforcement, the governing
- 21:40body. I like your idea for one
- 21:43transfer. I don't know if I think the
- 21:45contracts would solve that and that, you know, hey, this player
- 21:50signed a three-year contract, this one signed a 1.
- 21:53So we at least know at the end of this season this player's on
- 21:56the market and these are not. So I think contracts could solve
- 22:00the that's. Fair, mine is trying to avoid a
- 22:02CBA potentially but if you go CBA then absolutely let's and.
- 22:08Look, you signed a player at a high school and you get you get
- 22:10a player who's like, I'm going to bet on myself and sign a one
- 22:13year deal. That's fine.
- 22:14And you have a player who's like, I want to stay here and be
- 22:16developed or hey, you know what, this is my maybe my best offer
- 22:20is from Kennesaw State. Georgia offered me a one year
- 22:22deal because they don't know Kennesaw State offered me a
- 22:25four. I'm going to go there and then
- 22:27you'll here's where I want to steal from the Premier League.
- 22:28This is this is a pipe dream. This one's not.
- 22:30Real. Yeah.
- 22:31I think, I think public contracts is are realistic.
- 22:34I think that instead of, you know, transfer windows, I think
- 22:38if you get ACBA players signing different levels of contract
- 22:42even out of high school is realistic.
- 22:43But I think it's not realistic is the Premier League and other
- 22:46soccer teams, they have transfer fees.
- 22:48Have we talked about this on this podcast?
- 22:50We haven't. OK.
- 22:51Have you and I talked about it? I mean, we're talking a little
- 22:55bit maybe I know about transfer fees.
- 22:57OK, OK. I'm like, so you're, you're
- 22:59familiar if you're not familiar if Manchester United, a big
- 23:03soccer team in England, wants to, you know, let's say some
- 23:07other smaller team, AFC Richmond, it's a made-up team
- 23:10from Ted Lasso, has a player that they identified at 14 years
- 23:15old. Danny Rojas.
- 23:16And they brought in to their, they brought it and they've
- 23:19developed them and trained them. And now he's this 18 year old
- 23:22sensation, one of the best players in the world.
- 23:26But he is under contract with AFC Richmond, you know, until
- 23:31he's 22, while Manchester United not only can buy him out of this
- 23:36contract and pay him a new contract.
- 23:39That's that currently happens in college football when when
- 23:41school's it's just not talking about publicly is players do
- 23:44have buyout clauses that currently happens.
- 23:47But there's an added transfer fee and that is negotiated of in
- 23:52addition, Manchester United's going to pay just straight up
- 23:55cash to AFC Richmond of and there's been record transfer
- 24:00fees. I couldn't say at the top of my
- 24:01head, but I mean, $25 million transfer fee because Daniel,
- 24:05what this could do is this could keep the group of five healthy.
- 24:09Yeah. Is when you have these group of
- 24:11five schools who identify A2 star or a three star and develop
- 24:15them right now, you know what the group of high school gets
- 24:18when that player blows up and go gets taken by, you know, a
- 24:20Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, they get nothing.
- 24:23They get laughed at, they get spin on, they get a middle
- 24:25finger and told to have a good day.
- 24:27And by the way, you're also not getting the TV contract that,
- 24:30you know, these inner schools are getting.
- 24:32You're not going to get much money anyway.
- 24:33This could help, you know, because I know what the schedule
- 24:36stuff a lot of major coaches have talked about, we have to
- 24:39keep these cupcake games to, you know, it helps give money to
- 24:42these smaller athletic departments.
- 24:45This could help solve that problem of you pay a transfer
- 24:48fee to Toledo and now they've got 20 million bucks to go buy a
- 24:52roster. You know, like I don't think it
- 24:54would be that much, but. They have to be a great play.
- 24:56Of a pipe dream. They signed Bo Jackson, the real
- 25:00Bo Jackson, and then. The real 1, so OK transfer fee,
- 25:04I was like, I had to explain that one.
- 25:06I like that we've changed to 1 portal window in in the short
- 25:10term, yeah. Because and it's as of course
- 25:12spring. So I think that's a good spot
- 25:15for it to be. As a fan, I just want to enter
- 25:18spring practice and know who's going to be on my roster through
- 25:20the year. It was weird this year to
- 25:22actually because of the past couple years, I heard I was
- 25:24listening to Chuck Oliver here in Atlanta and he was talking
- 25:28about maybe Missouri or some coach.
- 25:30And he was like, yeah, they, you know, they know who their
- 25:34quarterbacks are on their roster.
- 25:37They have them. They have to figure out.
- 25:39And he said his his explanation was that he was talking about
- 25:44just in general. Previously, because of that
- 25:47portal window, you have been seeing coaches pretending like
- 25:51they don't know who their quarterback is until they
- 25:53announced in August. And now they will say, yeah, in
- 25:58the spring, hey, this is our guy.
- 26:00That way the summer workouts, which are usually player LED,
- 26:03they will have, you know that that quarterback will say, hey,
- 26:07I'm, I'm the guy. He'll go knock on doors, hey,
- 26:09come, let's go, you know, throw routes, that kind of thing.
- 26:12So I think you'll see a shift a little bit this year where we
- 26:15haven't seen the past couple years.
- 26:16So that's good. And again, something we love as
- 26:20parents of young kids. Hopefully this means spring
- 26:23games can stay around and several schools cancels either
- 26:27canceled them all together or didn't want to put them on TV
- 26:30because they're like, I'm not going to televise my second and
- 26:33third stringers for school aid to come and swoop in and right.
- 26:38And, and I don't, I don't blame schools for doing that, but as a
- 26:41fan. It hurts us.
- 26:43The portal is already over, it hurts.
- 26:44We are the ones that get hurt in this.
- 26:46So hopefully this means we can keep spring games that I mean,
- 26:50those are the perfect days to take kids to.
- 26:52It's fun to watch when we're missing football and it's been
- 26:55months since it's been on and it's March and April and Clemson
- 26:58has a spring game today. I can't wait to.
- 27:01It's something to have on. You know, it's it's it's real
- 27:03football's tape to watch. OK, I'm trying to make sure I
- 27:07have on my points here, Daniel. OK, hate the secrecy.
- 27:10I talked about no rules, the gap from the haves and haves nots we
- 27:13could solve. Here's something else I think
- 27:15you're starting to see. Wisconsin's a good example this
- 27:17year. I think you're going to, and
- 27:19Florida did it last year. I think you're going to see
- 27:21teams. This is a positive thing of NIL
- 27:23is give coaches a longer leash. This goes both ways, but you
- 27:31could fire a coach and pay them a buyout, or you could take that
- 27:33money that you might already have and invest it back into a
- 27:36roster and give them one more year, which Wisconsin did this
- 27:39year. They didn't fire Luke Fickle,
- 27:41and apparently they're one of the biggest spenders this season
- 27:43for players in the in high school and transfer recruiting.
- 27:46And how contracts work, their buyout gets less.
- 27:49So if they squander that, you're not necessarily out that money,
- 27:53you're just going to pay the buyout the next year.
- 27:55But it's probably, yeah, $10 million less than it was, you
- 27:59know, when you fire them the following year.
- 28:01I have a point I want to make about the one transfer window.
- 28:04Yeah, but I want to get to the schedule because I'm gonna save
- 28:09it for that because I'll mention it here.
- 28:12I think 1 transfer window. A good thing is that you had
- 28:15those two transfer portal weeks were insane and it was a great
- 28:19Newsweek for college football. The problem is it was happening
- 28:22at the same time as the College Football Playoff, right?
- 28:25If we can solve that, you can have what you're about to have
- 28:28this week with the NFL, which is the seas the league season has.
- 28:33Started week of the. And it's free agency.
- 28:36And you can have this with college football where the
- 28:38season's over, then, you know, the 2026 season has begun.
- 28:42And now the portal is open. It's one window.
- 28:45It's two weeks and you get to dominant headlines without being
- 28:48like in this place in the transfer portal.
- 28:50By the way, the semifinal is in six days and and what are we
- 28:53doing? Like, to your point, if it is
- 28:55one portal window like we've we've talked about and one time
- 28:59transfer rule potentially, then it's huge news.
- 29:02And if we have public contracts, then you're looking at it and
- 29:05you're like, hey, these guys are all in three-year contracts that
- 29:09don't even look at them. But these are guys to watch that
- 29:11can jump into the portal. They're on one year deals and
- 29:15then you're getting replications of them, like resigning with
- 29:17their team or they are, you know, entering the portal and
- 29:21looking for elsewhere. So it would be a big Newsweek
- 29:24like you said. And then it would also be
- 29:26something digestible for like analysts to say, Hey, these are
- 29:30the best one year contract players out there.
- 29:33They can make a list. These are the top 31 year
- 29:36contract players. And then, you know, put them out
- 29:38there. And then it becomes more it's
- 29:40not so much of A just over, you know, over saturated, like 3000
- 29:47people entered the portal. Hayes Fawcett is losing his
- 29:50thumbs from tweeting so much. And, you know, like we're able
- 29:53to really zero in on this is what's going on.
- 29:56Yeah, I love it. OK, nil portal, obviously the
- 30:01biggest. Changes.
- 30:03It's kind of our current state. There's some stuff we can do.
- 30:06We can keep it around and make it better, man.
- 30:08But I think you and I agree on the biggest thing to make this
- 30:11work is you've got to have a unified governing body to make
- 30:15this work. And, and my my thing to add to
- 30:17your point of that was public contracts, which I think, I
- 30:20think only comes with the collective bargaining agreement,
- 30:23unfortunately. But I think that's, I think it's
- 30:25where we're going, Daniel. Yeah, let's go to the College
- 30:30Football Playoff. You look, we can't go backwards.
- 30:33Cat's out of the bag, Genie's out of the bottle.
- 30:37We're not going back to four teams, Daniel, as much as you
- 30:39and I would probably still prefer that.
- 30:41So we won't. I'm not going to belabor that
- 30:43point, but what's your thoughts on the playoff?
- 30:46What do we like? What do we wish could change?
- 30:49What do we want to stop doing? The thoughts state of the
- 30:52College Football Playoff. Yeah, I do want to go back to
- 30:57four teams. Could we go to 8 teams?
- 30:59Because we've never done 8 teams.
- 31:02Yeah, never tried. We've never done it.
- 31:03So like could we do eight teams? I would be in favor.
- 31:08I would still be fine with if because if it's basically got to
- 31:11either stay the same or get more, I would be fine with
- 31:13staying at 12. I did mention I think 16 seems
- 31:17like it's going to happen at some point.
- 31:19I think that the 24 year hearing is it's it's all about like, you
- 31:25know, contract or just negotiations and stuff.
- 31:28Like it's just them being ridiculous to try to get more
- 31:32like, oh, you want all these automatic qualifiers?
- 31:34Well, let's just do 24 and get this many SEC teams in or this
- 31:38many big 10 teams in. So that's crazy.
- 31:43The more I hear them talk, the more I think they're serious.
- 31:46I think that they want you to. Think I heard.
- 31:48That I don't think that I think 16 is going to happen I think
- 31:52here here's. Here's the one that made me
- 31:55question. It was Josh Hypo.
- 31:57The SEC's proposal is not 24. The SEC is very against 24.
- 32:02Hypo saying he's for it is is this fear over the 9th
- 32:06conference game and not valuing wins and losses, which makes
- 32:09sense, Yeah, but a Kirby Smart made a good point.
- 32:12He said the people arguing for 24 probably don't have.
- 32:16They want, you know, it's all about money, right?
- 32:19They want premier matchups. So for them to get more premier
- 32:22matchups to make more money, they need a 2014 playoff.
- 32:25Kirby Smart's point was we don't need that in the SEC.
- 32:28We've like there's more people watching, for example, a
- 32:31Georgia, Texas regular season game than AI.
- 32:35Mean those are two big brands. I was going to say, if it's Ohio
- 32:38State, Oregon. I mean, we're going to say how?
- 32:40I mean, Oklahoma and South Carolina, more people are
- 32:43watching that game. Then Iowa, Penn State.
- 32:46Yeah, 1000. Percent you've got so many more
- 32:49eyes on that that game and you know you've got.
- 32:52That was a good point. Yeah, no, that's that's a very
- 32:54good point. There's so much and you're
- 32:56talking about inventory, TV inventory.
- 32:58And it's the that's what the whole deal with ESPN has been
- 33:03for the SEC, getting that ninth game.
- 33:05They're going to get all these extra, you know, get 16 more
- 33:08games or whatever it is. So a whole extra amount of games
- 33:14for the SEC on ESPN. So that's one thing it is
- 33:19frustrating to hear. 24, I think that that starts to, I mean, I
- 33:24think 12 kind of bastardizes the regular season already, but that
- 33:28would definitely be the case if you're at 2416.
- 33:31I could get to in the sense of saying, all right, Power 4 top 4
- 33:37conference champs or just the yeah, Power 4 conference champs
- 33:42you're in. And then just the top, you know,
- 33:47seeds after that, you're not catering to the group of five or
- 33:51group of 6. Excuse me, I'm never going to
- 33:52get used to that. I'm used to power five, group of
- 33:54five. It's whatever powerful.
- 33:57We know what you're talking about.
- 33:58It's going to change. We know what you mean.
- 33:59Here's the thing, all right, they're going to keep doing
- 34:02these stop gaps until 26 when the ACC dissolves.
- 34:06That's unfortunately foregone conclusion at that point.
- 34:09I kind of think that that's we got 10 years left.
- 34:12They're trying to figure that out.
- 34:13But if we could figure it out, I want a group of 6 to have their
- 34:15own playoff and that to be a big deal and to like use the bowl
- 34:19games to do it. If they need to have some on
- 34:21campus, I want more on campus games.
- 34:23If that's what 16 is going to provide is like a better base of
- 34:28on campus games, fine. You know, at the end of 2036,
- 34:32the ACC, their contract is up. And if I'll say this, I know
- 34:39that we're not here talking about realignment or anything
- 34:41like that. We're talking about College
- 34:42Football Playoff. I think the two are tied
- 34:44together. The ACC, when it does dissolve,
- 34:50unfortunately, whenever that happens, there will be, you
- 34:54know, the Big 12 will be trying to get in as part of it, but
- 34:58it's really going to be Big 10. SEC are going to go cherry
- 35:01picking. They're going to get the best
- 35:02teams out of those. Their TV rights deal goes till
- 35:072036. If Florida State had not just
- 35:12been a, you know, like a fired a dumpster fire the past two
- 35:17years. Hot dog water.
- 35:18Hot. Yeah, hot dog water.
- 35:19Like I used before the pot. They were hot dog water.
- 35:23Or as my buddy Grant would say, slaw their slaw the past couple
- 35:27years after that 13 one season. They just followed it up with a
- 35:30couple of modest 10 win seasons. Not even compete for big stuff,
- 35:34but just don't fall flat on your face.
- 35:36I think they would have already found a way to pay to get out.
- 35:40But because of how terrible they've been And Clemson, you
- 35:44know, I think that you could say it's almost saved the ACC a few
- 35:48years of them all just kind of staying together, like tail
- 35:52tucked between their legs, like maybe we shouldn't be arguing
- 35:54for this, but we'll see. We'll see how that goes.
- 35:57There's a lot of volatility with it.
- 35:59I think it's tough for them to say this is going to be the
- 36:02ideal model. While there's going to, are
- 36:06there still going to be 4 power conferences in 10 years?
- 36:09I mean, obviously they got to make a decision for right now
- 36:11and for the next few years, but I'm kind of thinking they're
- 36:14going to kick the can for about the next 10 years.
- 36:17I don't know what that's going to mean for the Big 12.
- 36:19If there's going to be 3 conferences, if they're going to
- 36:22value them all the same, especially if everybody defect,
- 36:26you know, anyways, that's that's a whole different conversation.
- 36:28We're not getting into that. My preference would be to stay
- 36:32at 12 or to go lower. But if they do change it and it
- 36:36has to change 16, I'm fine with. I just want yeah, the least
- 36:41amount of automatic qualifiers possible and the most at large
- 36:45bids possible. I would like for there to still
- 36:48be conference championship games, but I'm, you know, I'm a
- 36:51was a purist. That's probably I'm I
- 36:55romanticize the SEC championship.
- 36:57That's probably my fault. So.
- 36:59I hate the style, I hate the buys and the breaks.
- 37:02So my my playoff take is also a schedule take Daniel do it.
- 37:05So like I kind of need to talk about it kind of both the end
- 37:10because I'm fine with 12 teams. I think we are going to go to
- 37:1316. But I think the way this works
- 37:15is if you fix the schedule for college football.
- 37:18So that's the biggest complaint with the playoff is the
- 37:20schedule. Can I can I just lay out my
- 37:22perfect college football schedule?
- 37:24Is that OK? I want can.
- 37:25We lay this out. OK, I don't have exact dates on
- 37:27this, just go with me. All right, I like the landing
- 37:30model in that I think it was what we're calling right.
- 37:33The landing model season needs to end on January 1st or
- 37:38thereabouts or that set the first Saturday in January or
- 37:41something there. I like January 1st because it's
- 37:44a built in holiday. I would love to do it. the Rose
- 37:47Bowl. I've gotten pushed back that the
- 37:48fan experience at the Rose Bowl is not what it looks like on TV
- 37:52etcetera. That's fine.
- 37:55January 1st if. It was the 5:00 PM.
- 37:59I think it would be a better fan experience.
- 38:01I think that they would invest I agree, in it and it wouldn't be
- 38:04so stale. Yes, there's just I completely
- 38:07agree dude if that if that was the whole of the college 12
- 38:11playoff national championship, yes they would invest it the
- 38:13same way that Omaha is invested in for baseball even though it's
- 38:16one tournament a. Year 1000%.
- 38:18The money that would be poured into that if the whole sport was
- 38:22like this is our Mecca, this is our cathedral venue to end the
- 38:29sport at 5:00 PM Eastern on January 1st every the amount of
- 38:33money that we poured into that. And and here's the other thing,
- 38:36Daniel, this is my again, I don't think this is reality,
- 38:39unfortunately, but it's just the Rose Bowl.
- 38:41It's not the national championship.
- 38:42We just the natty is the Rose Bowl game, period. the Rose Bowl
- 38:46game just becomes college football's national
- 38:48championship. That'd be amazing.
- 38:50So you got to start there. All right, I'm going to go in
- 38:53order of the year to make it a little less confusing.
- 38:56So January 1st, the season ends, national championship, you have
- 39:00two weeks off. Third week of January, for two
- 39:03weeks you get the transfer portal or for a week or for 10
- 39:07days. So again, the perfect calendar.
- 39:09The portal is open, you're 1 window, it's free agency.
- 39:13In college football, first Wednesday of February you still
- 39:17have national signing day. So it's kind of back-to-back
- 39:20recruiting. Then February is a break for the
- 39:23sport. Everybody needs it.
- 39:25It's a dead period. Players can't work out, coaches
- 39:29can't visit with recruits. It is a built in like 3 or 4
- 39:33weeks of break. All right.
- 39:37Or maybe you can do internal stuff if you want to make
- 39:38practice plans for spring ball, whatever.
- 39:40March and April you get spring practice and then when you don't
- 39:44still a dead period. Let these kids get good grades
- 39:48in high school for recruiting, yes All right, so spring ball,
- 39:51spring games, both good things in March and April in the
- 39:54offseason, May schedule release, you find out your schedule, they
- 39:58make it a huge deal. I love it just like the NFL
- 40:00does. Teams do fun social media stuff.
- 40:04Maybe you invite your donors for a schedule release event for
- 40:07each school. You know, like get created
- 40:10fundraiser, dude, that's right. All right, that's in May, June.
- 40:16Recruiting season, dead period ends.
- 40:18Kids have graduated and it is busy recruiting season, but
- 40:22we've had a lot of breaks in the spring.
- 40:24And these college football coaches who are already used to
- 40:26running at 1,000,000 miles an hour, they don't mind this.
- 40:28This is busy recruiting season because you know what happens in
- 40:32July, Daniel? Early signing day in July,
- 40:36before the football season, not in the middle of conference
- 40:39championships in July. Early national signing day.
- 40:43All right, then we get into camp in August.
- 40:47We start the regular season Week zero with any guesses?
- 40:53Any guesses? A football game to start their
- 40:57season every year Week 0. A Chick-fil-A kickoff game.
- 41:01Army Navy Week 0 standalone game.
- 41:05No other teams can play Week 0. Is great.
- 41:08It is. Army name and.
- 41:09It's played in the Northeast, so it's not too blistering hot.
- 41:12And I know there's gonna be people that but but the snow,
- 41:15I'm like, guys, college football's changing.
- 41:17I promise you, they do not care about Army, Navy.
- 41:20There's no executive order that can stop this.
- 41:22They will run over that game if you care about it.
- 41:26Week 0 standalone game. It is the start of football
- 41:29season every year. You want to if you want to keep
- 41:32it special. That game to kick off the
- 41:35season. I know and everybody who's been
- 41:39starving from college football for nine months second.
- 41:42Of that game. You will have 35 million people
- 41:46watch this game dude. Anyway, that's the start of the
- 41:50college football season every year.
- 41:51Is army Navy 100 zero standalone game no notes.
- 41:54Do like a 330 game game days there big thing take offs there
- 41:58everybody just all right week 1. Here's here's my only caveat.
- 42:04Are we getting rid of conference championships?
- 42:06And my scenario, we are. If we're not, you got to move.
- 42:09You got to move the whole season up A.
- 42:10Week I will allow you to for the sake all right, You're I'm going
- 42:14to say hold up, let him cook and then I'll just I'll listen, OK?
- 42:17Because I, I like the season starting Labor Day.
- 42:20I think that's fun. Labor Day weekend.
- 42:22So I'm going to say we're getting rid of conference
- 42:24championships. OK, The season starts Labor Day
- 42:27weekend. You run through the season.
- 42:29First weekend of December is your first playoff games.
- 42:32You go round. This means that we keep rivalry
- 42:35weekend the same. It's still Thanksgiving, so
- 42:39you're winning me over with that.
- 42:40Even though we're losing conference championships.
- 42:41I'm here. OK, continue.
- 42:43I'd rather keep that the conference championships,
- 42:45especially because conference championships have don't mean as
- 42:48much as anymore. If you pitched it to me that
- 42:50way, I would also vote keep rivalries at that point.
- 42:54And that's where I'm at. So and then you play, you know,
- 42:574 rounds of playoffs, the four weekends of December.
- 42:59And either this, this solves 2 things.
- 43:01If you keep a 12 team playoff, it keeps the by normal, a normal
- 43:06by week. If you go to 16 teams, everybody
- 43:09displays 4 weeks in a row. Your season ends rivalry week
- 43:12and the next week, either you know, all but four teams are
- 43:15playing the game if it's a 12 team playoff or if the 16 team
- 43:18playoff you're playing, everybody's playing the game
- 43:22that next week, no by weeks. And so you finish January 1st.
- 43:24And I keep all games on campus for the playoff.
- 43:28I would do until the national championship but I I know that's
- 43:31a bridge too far. Just give me the 1st 2 rounds on
- 43:34campus. That's the you can have the semi
- 43:37on a neutral. And then that that would solve
- 43:39the point of people who've had bye weeks, everyone would at
- 43:43least get a home game if they have qualified for it by being
- 43:46at one of the best teams. And if it's sixteen, you might
- 43:49get two playoff games. Yeah.
- 43:51Which again, that's, I mean, imagine anyway.
- 43:55But there's been some big schools who have not hosted a
- 43:57playoff game yet. They could be hosting.
- 43:59I mean, again, I look, don't dog me.
- 44:02You're by 6 fans. Oregon.
- 44:03James Madison was cool, but imagine if Oregon was hosting
- 44:06Ohio State at Austin Stadium instead of James Madison.
- 44:08What's that environment look like?
- 44:11We saw what Georgia almost looked like at 3:30 in the
- 44:13regular season. Imagine that was a playoff game
- 44:14in Athens. So yeah.
- 44:17And then the season wraps up January 1st.
- 44:19You know, that is a rough, a rough building of my perfect
- 44:22college football schedule. I think I've solved it.
- 44:25Thoughts. I'm in.
- 44:27My only downside is losing conference championships, but if
- 44:30it means that we're going to get on campus potentially multiple
- 44:34on campus weeks of playoff games, I'm here for it.
- 44:39You're preserving. You're preserving traditions is
- 44:42what I'm hearing. You're having to change some,
- 44:45but you're preserving Army, Navy, which I think would.
- 44:47Be as a stand electric. And then, yeah.
- 44:51And then you've got obviously some years you end up with two
- 44:55by weeks because of how the schedule falls in the some years
- 44:58it's one by week. But otherwise you keep it, you
- 45:01know, starts the technically week 1 is Labor Day.
- 45:05Last week of the radio season is Thanksgiving weekend.
- 45:09I like that because that keeps things feeling normal.
- 45:14And then, yeah, dude, if we can keep those on set, keep games on
- 45:16Saturdays, and then either it is the Rose Bowl or if they have
- 45:20too much problem with that, moving it to the Saturday after,
- 45:26you know, the next Saturday in January, Let's not have Monday
- 45:31night at 8:00 PM national championship, whatever we do.
- 45:36I did want your feedback on signing days in July and
- 45:40February, like instead of an early signing day in December,
- 45:43it's actually before the senior season.
- 45:45I think there's some risk there and maybe if you're a player
- 45:48who's like, I don't need senior tape, you sign, but then there's
- 45:51you still get the players who explode their senior season, you
- 45:53still get them in February. Right.
- 45:55Yeah, I think, I think that's good because February signing
- 45:59day will be like you initially pitched it, it's right after the
- 46:03portal. So you kind of get your portal
- 46:04wrap up and then all your senior pop offs who are like late
- 46:08signees are all together in one pile.
- 46:12But you kind of have your your base scheduled and yeah, I mean,
- 46:16basically those eight weeks, June and July is crazy.
- 46:19And then you conclude July with signing day.
- 46:23I think that works. You could move it up a week.
- 46:25So it's, you know, depend upon how early teams are going to
- 46:29start their camp technically. So it could be the second to
- 46:31last week of July, whatever that needs to be.
- 46:33But yeah, I like it because we need to separate them more than
- 46:39they are now. And that that way it also will
- 46:42make, you know, we talked about just TV inventory and having
- 46:46like, what, you know, what the NFL does with their week of, you
- 46:49know, free agency and like, they just had the deadline for the
- 46:53franchise tag yesterday. So tomorrow, you know, next
- 46:56Monday, legal tampering begins. And then I can't believe we call
- 47:00it that, but legal tampering period.
- 47:02And then, you know, officially on Wednesday, they can sign
- 47:05contracts next week. So it would be, it would feel
- 47:08like that with the signing day being like, it would be a big
- 47:12deal. These guys have waited a long
- 47:14time. It's been a long time.
- 47:16We didn't realize these guys were going to have such great
- 47:18senior seasons or this really big prospect we thought was
- 47:22going to sign with Ohio State in July didn't.
- 47:25And then they played his whole senior season, and then now
- 47:29Michigan's after, you know, whatever it would be like, it
- 47:32would bring the drama back to signing day, which right now has
- 47:35been very like, you know. Nothing.
- 47:38Sterile. It's just not exciting right
- 47:41now, the second signing day. Agreed.
- 47:45Anything you would out of the schedule.
- 47:48I kind of jumped to both to both spots there.
- 47:49No, I mean, I, I think that some other stuff is going to kind of,
- 47:55you know work its work itself out with all of the schedule
- 47:59changes with different conferences working, you know,
- 48:02doing different amount of conference games.
- 48:04And I think you're going to have a push for more on conference
- 48:06stuff. But as far as like the the
- 48:08actual schedule itself, I mean, that would be, yeah.
- 48:12It's, it's legitimately my only concern is like, you know, it'd
- 48:17be nice to have conference championships.
- 48:19But like, if we're truly going to move to this model and it's
- 48:24kind of a force thing this way, I feel like it's a good way to
- 48:27preserve what we love about the sport.
- 48:30Like, let's keep rivalry weekend.
- 48:32Let's keep Week 1 Labor Day weekend, you know, let's play
- 48:36these games on Saturdays. Let's not have guys worn out or
- 48:39also rusty from having so many time, so much time off.
- 48:44Let their time off be all when the season's done.
- 48:47Don't have this, you know, anticipation that I think
- 48:50sometimes can cause a staleness to the sport where there's 30
- 48:55day layoff for a certain team or, you know, just like all that
- 49:00time that's between, you know, the second round and then, you
- 49:05know, the the quarter final and the semi final and then the
- 49:07championship. It's like all that time just
- 49:09feels like we've squandered this whole month of December.
- 49:12And I think that you could, if you got a governing body, have
- 49:16them sit down with the NFL and figure out what makes sense for
- 49:20both sports and not not feel like your step.
- 49:24And if you are going competing at the same time.
- 49:26Well, you know what Jacob, I like college football more.
- 49:30I'm going to watch college football instead in the NFL.
- 49:33There's NFL fans like NFL more. They're going to watch that
- 49:35instead. If you're a true ball, know
- 49:37you're probably going to put both games on the same time so
- 49:41people will find a way to watch it.
- 49:43You need to stop being nervous about losing a head to It will
- 49:54hinder some families schedules as far as the holidays, but
- 49:59really why are you scheduling to be all these different places in
- 50:02the holidays anyways? You should learn your lesson.
- 50:04Stay at home, watch college football.
- 50:07That's right. OK, Daniel lastly officiating a
- 50:14smaller bucket, but we got to talk.
- 50:15This is an in game thing that I think frustrates everybody and
- 50:18everyone says that officiating the worst it's ever been.
- 50:21I think college football is the most public it's ever been, so I
- 50:23don't know if it's the worst ever.
- 50:24Casuals have gotten the most access to our bad officiating
- 50:28that has always been there. That's just right, Daniel.
- 50:31What's? Is there anything going well
- 50:33with officiating? What would you change?
- 50:35How do we fix officiating college football?
- 50:37I think mostly officiating is going pretty good.
- 50:41I think that. I think so too.
- 50:43I think mostly it's going good. That like, I feel like they do a
- 50:46good job of deferring to replay. Sometimes it's exhausting.
- 50:51I don't think they should do it as much, but I think they do a
- 50:53good job of like if something's close, calling it in the fashion
- 50:57that it can be reviewed, I think is good.
- 51:00And I think ultimately they do that.
- 51:02And there's been times, Jacob, where I see something the first
- 51:05time and I'm like, they're crazy, That's wrong.
- 51:08And then I would see it slow motion.
- 51:09I'm like, dude, this guy's got great vision.
- 51:12He knows what he's doing now. That's what's going good.
- 51:15What's going bad, what's targeting?
- 51:19I don't think anybody knows. We still don't know.
- 51:21I could give you a definition, but I feel like it's been, you
- 51:24know, done incorrectly based on even what I think.
- 51:28And I think that it's truly there for optics at times.
- 51:33And it's like, OK, this guy got hit hard, chill out, it's fine.
- 51:38So that's one thing. And the only other one I'm going
- 51:40to mention, I know you probably have a couple, but I, I really
- 51:44like what the ACC did. So we talked about what's going
- 51:46good. The ACC lets you listen to all
- 51:49the reviews. And I just think there's a
- 51:51certain level of first of all, accountability.
- 51:54And I don't mean that to, you know, I don't think it's
- 51:58dangerous to do that with the SEC.
- 51:59These fans are crazy, but it's nice to have accountability.
- 52:03But I really just like to hear how they reason it out if they,
- 52:07they shouldn't be scared. I think they should just be
- 52:09truly honest. And I think if they are
- 52:11genuinely, this is what I'm saying, unfortunately, like if
- 52:15we heard how they're talking to each other, hey, we really can't
- 52:18overturn this because there's not enough evidence, you know, I
- 52:21agree. Yeah, Look, 'cause this and you
- 52:23know, if you heard a couple people conferring back and
- 52:26forth, I think for me, if that calls going against me, but I
- 52:30hear that they've done that. I am much more forgiving when
- 52:35they come out and say this is this because I'm like, you've
- 52:38got to be kidding me. You know, like I think it would
- 52:40go a long way to heal a lot of the wounds that people have with
- 52:43review if they would just let the everybody listens to every
- 52:47review. You could even run ads while
- 52:50it's going on on the side if you want to.
- 52:51Like they're all about ads. Let the audio be here and let it
- 52:55be some sort of ad picture in picture.
- 52:58Some see people do that already, but I think that would be very
- 53:02beneficial to the sport. It's clarity, man.
- 53:05It's it's at least I hear the explanation and I understand
- 53:08better, you know, and they're trying to be quick about it too.
- 53:11Like you've got a timer on there.
- 53:12They're trying to be as fast as possible and they're just saying
- 53:14like, hey guys, do you see enough evidence to overturn
- 53:16this? We all agree.
- 53:17We all agree. Yes, yes, yes.
- 53:19OK, we're going to go, you know, call in this field stands and
- 53:23it's you hear the. Answer time on the clock.
- 53:26Let's move. To Daniel, I think we're getting
- 53:28big enough. What's funny is does the NFL
- 53:30have full time refs yet or is that still they don't still
- 53:33don't have full time refs. I don't.
- 53:35NFL officiating is far superior. I don't college football, but
- 53:39can we can we not? We don't have enough money to
- 53:41get some full time refs in some of these big leagues.
- 53:43Again, this will be collective governing body.
- 53:45Maybe we can get some full time refs.
- 53:46OK this is a rule I've always wanted to change so I got to
- 53:50mention it. The touchback rule.
- 53:52I think it's the dumbest rule in football, NFL or college outside
- 53:57of some egregious targeting calls and having a player out
- 53:59for the game. I hope we solved that soon.
- 54:01Please. It is so easy to judge intent,
- 54:03Daniel. Yeah, 99% of targeting is not
- 54:06intent full. You don't need to kick a player
- 54:08out of the game for that. But we've taken Spearing out of
- 54:10the game anyway. It's not the role I'm talking
- 54:11about. Fumbling a ball out of the end
- 54:15zone should not be a touchback. It is the most punishment.
- 54:20Doesn't fit the crime penalty in college football.
- 54:24The ball should not be turned over.
- 54:27I think I'm fine if you want to bring it back out to the 20, but
- 54:31it's the only play in which if you fumble it out of bounds at
- 54:34the inch yard line, it's your own ball at the inch yard line.
- 54:38If it goes one inch further and hits the pylon and goes out of
- 54:41bounds, is the other team's ball on the 20 yard line?
- 54:46Yeah, like, here's the thing, if you want to make it a turnover,
- 54:48I still disagree, but put it on the three.
- 54:51Yeah, you just drove the length of the field and you're giving
- 54:54A-Team a free 20 yards because of 1 inch of difference.
- 54:58I don't even think it should be a turn over, Daniel.
- 55:00My thing is, I think it should be your own ball in the free 3
- 55:02yard line. But if you really want to punish
- 55:04somebody and be like, you shouldn't fumble out of the end
- 55:06zone, like you can't do that down here, bring it out to the
- 55:1020, but you get to keep the ball.
- 55:11Something's got to change. That's just one of those.
- 55:14The punishment does not fit the crime in my opinion.
- 55:17Because then they're still in field goal range.
- 55:19So it's like, and you can keep the down.
- 55:21I agree. I think you keep the down.
- 55:23There's not like a, oh, you reset first down.
- 55:25That's preposterous. No, no, but like let's.
- 55:28Say it was third down and they fumble.
- 55:30No, it's 4th down. It's 4th down, but you're on the
- 55:3220s, so it's like OK, hey, let's.
- 55:34Maybe it's 4th and goal and now you're on the 20.
- 55:36Yeah. So you can, you can go on the
- 55:3920, you can kick a field goal or if you need the touchdown, of
- 55:42course you can do the lower percentage touchdown try, but
- 55:45you're at least in striking distance.
- 55:47The ball didn't go to the other side.
- 55:48I I agree. Daniel, I think we fixed college
- 55:51football. We just need to send this to the
- 55:53right people. Unfortunately, there's no such
- 55:55thing as the right people right now.
- 55:57So I don't know who we're going to send this to, but I think we
- 56:00have fixed, we have fixed the sport.
- 56:02Yeah. Be sure to follow us for more
- 56:07content like this at the Extra Point pod on Instagram.
- 56:11Daniel next week we are going to talk about we have a fun March
- 56:15Madness topic. How is this Daniel?
- 56:17People love to compare teams for different years.
- 56:19I think that's near impossible, but we're going to do it for
- 56:22March Madness. Daniel it turns out there are
- 56:25exactly 64 teams that have made the College Football Playoffs.
- 56:29So why not do a 64 team bracket? What is the best College
- 56:33Football Playoff team? We have seeded them.
- 56:36We are going to pick winners and losers and Y and crown for March
- 56:40Madness, the greatest College Football Playoff team of all
- 56:45time. We'll do that next week here on
