- 0:03alright everybody welcome back to the Eye Believe Podcast
- 0:05I'm Danet and I'm joined with my co host Megan
- 0:08and we have Kristen from the KMac Fights Back team
- 0:12and she is guys
- 0:13she's famous in the steps for sight community
- 0:15I'm not even joking um
- 0:17so Kristen
- 0:18when you were first diagnosed with ocular melanoma
- 0:20let's just like get into that part of your story
- 0:22what were you feeling um
- 0:23and how has that moment of being diagnosed
- 0:26shaped the advocate that you are today
- 0:28yeah thank you
- 0:29and thank you guys for having me
- 0:30so I was diagnosed back in 2021
- 0:33there wasn't much out there on the internet
- 0:35about eye cancer so my first kind of
- 0:38you know feelings were fear and confusion
- 0:40and just a lot of questions um
- 0:43about what was coming next
- 0:44so the year of 2021 I was diagnosed in January um
- 0:48started with a lot of just surgeries um
- 0:51you know different things to just do first
- 0:54and then I found community after that
- 0:57um I started connecting with A Cure In Sight that fall
- 1:01and then watched their Eye Believe conference
- 1:05and remotely from um Covid Times
- 1:09and we all were remote that year um
- 1:12but then they were hinting at this big fundraiser
- 1:14coming up in January of 2022
- 1:16steps for sight the first annual um
- 1:19and so I kind of got plugged in that way I
- 1:23I started you know
- 1:25just with my own diagnosis and asking questions um
- 1:30and then
- 1:30I got this opportunity to give back to this community
- 1:33that I was a part of um
- 1:35I saw such a need for fundraising
- 1:37for a cure of a super rare cancer that had no cure
- 1:41um and a need for visibility and
- 1:43you know social media presence of a call to action and
- 1:47um to join this walk with us
- 1:49you know it was uh
- 1:51I was looking at a long diagnosis
- 1:53a long prognosis with this cancer um
- 1:56even being no evidence of disease at the time
- 1:59um I was just looking ahead at
- 2:01you know years to come
- 2:03with or without treatment
- 2:04and um
- 2:05I knew that I needed a team behind me
- 2:08Kristen your team
- 2:09KMac Fights Back
- 2:11continues to be the largest and strongest fundraiser
- 2:14what does that support mean to you personally
- 2:17you know I have a really huge team behind me that for
- 2:21KMac Fights Back each January
- 2:23and I'm so grateful for that
- 2:25I'm grateful that it consists
- 2:26not only of family members
- 2:27but friends and co workers
- 2:29and people from all walks of life um
- 2:32from in state out of state
- 2:33people who just want to join
- 2:35and be a part of this fundraising
- 2:37annual tradition um
- 2:40and while the growth
- 2:42and the numbers we've been able to raise towards this
- 2:45each year have grown
- 2:46and I'm so blessed to see that um
- 2:49I've I've seen
- 2:50you know multiple teams come up underneath each year
- 2:54and fight for those spots
- 2:56and that's really awesome to see
- 2:58you know like
- 2:58I think as we um
- 3:01you know continue steps for sight
- 3:03it's great to see other people challenge
- 3:05their family members um
- 3:07their co workers
- 3:08their friends and family from in state and out of state
- 3:10to join this virtual call to action
- 3:13it doesn't have to be a walk
- 3:16that everyone comes in person for
- 3:17but it's a walk that we do throughout the month um
- 3:20to honor those in the community
- 3:22to honor um
- 3:24people like me with this disease and um
- 3:27just kind of acknowledge the year that we
- 3:29maybe have had the past year and
- 3:31you know the challenges that that has brought
- 3:34and celebrate the victories along the way um
- 3:36that brought us to another New Year
- 3:38and another reason to fight again
- 3:40oh my goodness
- 3:41Kristen I love that
- 3:42I feel like I have watched you participate just on like
- 3:45with Instagram and in the
- 3:47in the steps for sight the charity footprints app
- 3:50where we have like
- 3:50the scrapbook and like
- 3:51the pictures that you guys share
- 3:53and your team is probably one of the most active teams
- 3:55in terms of kind of the scrapbook aspect
- 3:58which is if you think of it as like
- 3:59a news feed for the the steps for sight challenge
- 4:03those of you guys listening
- 4:04um it's a place where you can upload photos
- 4:06you can just snap a picture
- 4:07of where you're taking your walk
- 4:08we see pick you know
- 4:09pictures of people like
- 4:10doing a walk outside
- 4:12some people take their dogs for a walk
- 4:13some people are running in the snow
- 4:15and they're like
- 4:15actually running
- 4:16because they're enjoying the running part
- 4:18but what have you noticed
- 4:20and been kind of the most excited for each year
- 4:22as you've done the steps for sight
- 4:25kind of initiative alongside your team and
- 4:27and what do you wish that you could see some more of
- 4:29like from other people participating this year
- 4:31yeah thank you
- 4:32I really think the social participation is huge
- 4:35it's really cool to see
- 4:37not only my own team members posting photos
- 4:39where they are
- 4:40whether that's in the snow or on the treadmill
- 4:43but just taking that time to be like
- 4:45I'm here I'm walking
- 4:46but also to see you know
- 4:48the other teams as well like
- 4:50I get to see people walking in Florida and in Arizona
- 4:54and last year
- 4:55I was posting on my honeymoon that I was walking
- 4:58and so it it's
- 4:59it's fun to you know
- 5:01just kind of acknowledge you know
- 5:03it doesn't matter where you are
- 5:05like we're moving today
- 5:06and we're moving towards this number of 7,000 steps
- 5:09each day
- 5:10in honor of the 7,000 people diagnosed each year
- 5:13with ocular melanoma
- 5:15and honestly it's
- 5:16it's such a great call to action
- 5:18because not only is it a good number to reach for
- 5:20in our own daily lives
- 5:22but it's it's
- 5:24you know the start
- 5:25of a New Year
- 5:25a lot of people already have these fitness goals
- 5:27and it's attainable it's
- 5:29it's a number that a lot of people feel like
- 5:31that they can start and then sometimes outperform
- 5:34and get their own satisfaction from that too
- 5:37and so I I do
- 5:38I get excited to see you know
- 5:40the leaderboard and people on my own team uh
- 5:43race each other for their their own top spots
- 5:47that's always fun to kind of make it your own
- 5:49one of the things that you have mentioned in the past
- 5:52and that I've seen you do personally
- 5:53is that you actually have like
- 5:54put a little personalized um
- 5:56bio in your steps for sight page
- 5:58like that you're sending out to friends and family
- 6:00why do you feel like that
- 6:01like personalized story
- 6:03and for patients you know
- 6:04patients or family members of patients
- 6:06why do you think it's so important for them
- 6:07to add that personalized aspect to
- 6:10kind of why they're doing steps for sight
- 6:12yeah I think it's a
- 6:13important to kind of
- 6:14summarize where you're at in your journey
- 6:16kind of adding a bio to your own page
- 6:18helps other patients kind of see
- 6:21you know um
- 6:22currently I'm working on my metastatic journey
- 6:25I'm in a trial
- 6:26is actually where I am right now in my journey
- 6:28but then a lot of times
- 6:30to people I don't see as often during the year
- 6:33it's a good opportunity to give an annual report
- 6:36in a summary of maybe
- 6:38what the past year has looked like
- 6:40and where you're going this year
- 6:42um a lot of times
- 6:43ocular melanoma patients we might like
- 6:46physically present
- 6:48just kind of like your everyday person
- 6:50when people don't get to see the battles
- 6:52that you struggle with underneath or you know
- 6:55whether that be mental or physical
- 6:57and just kind of those those
- 6:59the realness of the disease
- 7:01you know like
- 7:02even if you're at a stable part of your journey
- 7:05it's still very much a journey to you
- 7:07and so
- 7:08I think it is important to tell others where you're at
- 7:11in this space and it gives myself a
- 7:14a good reminder
- 7:15to reflect back on how far I've come over a year
- 7:18and look back on past years too
- 7:20to be like okay
- 7:22that's where we were then
- 7:23and here we are now and um
- 7:26this is our goals for moving forward into 2026
- 8:00so for patients and families
- 8:02who feel isolated after diagnosis
- 8:05what would you want them to know about this community
- 8:07yeah I think it's important for people to know that
- 8:09there is a strong community
- 8:10presence for ocular melanoma
- 8:12friends and family here at A Cure In Sight
- 8:15there are patients who meet every Tuesday night
- 8:19over zoom and we connect
- 8:20and we are able to talk through where we're at
- 8:23in each stage um
- 8:24but it's also important for people to see others
- 8:28gather teams gather support
- 8:30fundraise for a cure
- 8:31and see so much movement towards that direction
- 8:35for a rare cancer that has such a small
- 8:38small platform in the cancer community
- 8:41it's really important for people who maybe feel small
- 8:44to start somewhere and then watch that growth
- 8:47for me my first year was steps first sight
- 8:50I I wasn't sure how I felt about asking for money
- 8:54and that's kind of how it felt at first
- 8:56for fundraising was like I don't know that
- 8:58you know after the holidays
- 8:59how that feels about asking for money
- 9:01but it's really fundraising for a cure
- 9:04and then I just saw it grow and um
- 9:07exponentially from there it's not
- 9:09people wanted something to be a part of with me
- 9:12and while I was feeling fine um
- 9:15financially in those early years
- 9:19people wanted to still give towards something they
- 9:21they still wanted to give back
- 9:23and show their support in that way
- 9:25and so from what I thought was just gonna be immediate
- 9:28family members quickly grew to friends
- 9:30family and co workers from there
- 9:32and I was just so touched
- 9:33to see
- 9:34so many people wanted to put in the donation money
- 9:37to be a part of the team
- 9:38or put in their time to walk with me each day
- 9:41and that support alone can go such a long way
- 9:44I think that's so true
- 9:45cause I think people really do wanna help
- 9:47and they wanna do something
- 9:48but
- 9:49they find themselves in that position where they're
- 9:50like I just don't know what to do
- 9:52and they're afraid they're gonna say the wrong thing
- 9:53and do the wrong thing
- 9:55so I think giving them something tangible
- 9:57you can do this this is what I want
- 9:59this is what I need
- 10:00you're giving them that opportunity to support you
- 10:03without them having to figure out what to do
- 10:05on their own I think that's really cool
- 10:07yeah I agree
- 10:08it's really been unique for steps for sight
- 10:11the last few years cause the first year was 2022
- 10:14so this is 22 23
- 10:1624 25
- 10:17this will be our 5th year doing steps for sight
- 10:19if I'm doing the math correctly
- 10:20yes 5th year
- 10:21yes yeah
- 10:225th year
- 10:23which is kind of crazy when you think about it
- 10:24like looking back just from a diagnosis perspective
- 10:27I know Kristen and I you were
- 10:28you and I were diagnosed pretty um
- 10:30pretty close together in in
- 10:31like the I was 2021
- 10:33you were 2022
- 10:34so like
- 10:34to be at that milestone of like okay
- 10:36like we are five plus years into our diagnosis
- 10:39that's huge and I
- 10:41I love what you said about kind of looking back and
- 10:43and using steps for sight as a kind of a way to gauge
- 10:46like okay I
- 10:47I came this far last year
- 10:48and now we're starting the year strong
- 10:50like we're starting the year fresh
- 10:51but I think that one of the other
- 10:52really unique things about steps for sight has
- 10:55been the opportunity for patients to see
- 10:57the real time impact
- 10:58that their fundraising efforts have
- 11:01so Kristen
- 11:02you have been doing steps for sight
- 11:03this will be your fifth year participating
- 11:05and we are so glad to have you back
- 11:06with KMac Fights Back
- 11:08and we're so glad to have someone
- 11:09who's such a strong advocate in the community
- 11:11for the fundraising that we do with steps for sight
- 11:14what have you noticed over the last five years
- 11:16about just the impact like
- 11:17the real world impact that this fundraiser every year
- 11:20has had on the ocular melanoma community
- 11:22and the research the support that patients receive
- 11:25yeah thank you
- 11:26well I have definitely seen just so much growth
- 11:29from A Cure In Sight alone
- 11:31over the last five years
- 11:32I was able when I had just started
- 11:35I was telling people this is where I'm getting
- 11:37you know my information
- 11:38every Tuesday night I'm doing these patient calls
- 11:42and everyone's telling me
- 11:44you know these are the next steps
- 11:46that you might need to consider
- 11:47and it was very clear
- 11:49that A Cure In Sight had their head in the game
- 11:51they knew where the research was going
- 11:52they knew who the pharma people were to talk to
- 11:56and then out of that became
- 11:58you know this podcast
- 11:59you know
- 12:00that this podcast had really grown in popularity
- 12:04and information and the doctors
- 12:05that you guys have been able to have on this
- 12:08you guys have been able to do walks
- 12:10nationwide throughout the year
- 12:13and then this year alone
- 12:14I've seen so much research movement come out
- 12:18and a lot of excitement with the patient registry
- 12:22and how that's gonna be making waves and
- 12:26you know research and data alone
- 12:29and it's
- 12:31it's very exciting to see people are now able to
- 12:35kind of align their doctors appointments
- 12:37and their biopsies with tissue sample donations
- 12:41and so these are real things
- 12:42that are gonna point towards
- 12:44how we find a cure for ocular melanoma in the future
- 12:49and so these dollars that we're raising
- 12:51are really making a huge impact
- 13:11so Kristen
- 13:12looking ahead to steps for sight this year
- 13:14what is your goal for KMac Fights Back
- 13:16and for steps for sight in general
- 13:18and what do you wanna let everybody know
- 13:22so
- 13:22going into our fifth annual steps for sight fundraiser
- 13:25I'm really excited to write my annual email to my team
- 13:29kind of let them know where I'm at in my journey
- 13:31um
- 13:32have that call for us to come together again this year
- 13:35and fundraise for a cure
- 13:37I challenge everybody to join um
- 13:40and you know
- 13:42feel free to join KMac Fights Back
- 13:44but also look at who else is joining
- 13:46and maybe learn about some of the other patients
- 13:49who are also fighting this fight with me
- 13:51um I'd love to see
- 13:52you know the competition um
- 13:54not only on the fundraising dollar side of things
- 13:56but on the steps itself it's so
- 13:58fun to see people chase each other for those top spots
- 14:02and you know
- 14:03interact with the scrapbook and
- 14:05you know post some social media
- 14:07post and share that this fundraiser is going on
- 14:10and not only for my team but for others
- 14:12and I think that it goes really far
- 14:14when
- 14:14it's not even people that I know from my own circle
- 14:17but they're sharing it with their neighbors
- 14:19and they're inviting them to walk with them
- 14:21and I think it it starts small
- 14:24and it grows from there
- 14:25and so that's what I'm excited to see
- 14:26is the things I couldn't have planned for this year
- 14:29and the people who I don't even know who are involved
- 14:32um coming together for this year
- 14:35so you send an email out
- 14:37kind of prefacing what's coming
- 14:39what do you say in your email
- 14:40if somebody else wants to get a team together
- 14:42and they're like oh
- 14:42that's a great idea
- 14:43how would they go about putting their email together
- 14:45what should they include
- 14:46I would say like
- 14:47for me when I write my email to my team
- 14:50well number one
- 14:51it can start like small
- 14:52you can kind of do your own quick little social post of
- 14:55like hey
- 14:55I'm summarizing my ocular melanoma journey
- 14:59from this past year
- 15:00if you would like to receive this email
- 15:02and learn some information about steps for sight
- 15:05which I will be doing in January
- 15:07please drop your email below
- 15:08and you'll be part of that email list
- 15:10but for my own email that I type up and sent to my team
- 15:14uh it's just really summarizing
- 15:16you know
- 15:16maybe the different treatments I've had over the year
- 15:19for me I had two Hepzatos
- 15:21three chemo embolizations
- 15:23and now I'm starting a drug trial
- 15:25and so it's just kind of like
- 15:26a reminder about
- 15:27some of those things
- 15:28that we've encountered over this year
- 15:30and you know
- 15:31it is you know
- 15:32you learn to use a lot of medical jargon
- 15:34and so it's
- 15:35it's nice to kind of have that wrap up and reminder of
- 15:38you know these sound similar
- 15:40but they're different
- 15:41and this is where it's leading to now
- 15:43and what I'm looking forward to for next year
- 15:45and where things are headed
- 15:47for patients
- 15:47who also want to kind of use that as a summary
- 15:50it's it can be as small as
- 15:52you know I
- 15:53I did my scans in may and again in November
- 15:57and things are stable and I'm excited to
- 16:01you know keep up with the patient community
- 16:02with A Cure In Sight and see what next year brings
- 16:05um I'll have scans again next may or however that looks
- 16:09and just kind of putting those pointers out there
- 16:11for people who might feel like
- 16:13maybe even like
- 16:15their own diagnosis
- 16:16is kind of made it to the background
- 16:17it's like this is a real journey for me
- 16:19this is what it looked like last year
- 16:21and this is what it'll look like for next year
- 16:23sounds like a lot of the impact from this email
- 16:25that you send out has come from
- 16:27you know
- 16:28creating a personal connection with your community
- 16:30and just inviting them to be part of the journey
- 16:33um
- 16:33I know it can be really vulnerable as a cancer patient
- 16:35to put yourself out there and to tell people like
- 16:37what's going on you know
- 16:39whether it's that you lost your eye
- 16:41because of enucleation
- 16:42or that you just have radiation damage
- 16:44um maybe you look totally normal on the outside
- 16:46and nothing really has changed
- 16:48but you just feel all of these changes
- 16:50um if you guys are listening
- 16:51like I hope
- 16:52Kristen's story just illustrates
- 16:54just how impactful it is
- 16:55to bring your community alongside with you
- 16:57and it doesn't have to mean that they get all of the
- 17:01the sticky details so to speak from
- 17:03you know every single doctor's appointment
- 17:05every single harrowing
- 17:06hard thing that happened this year
- 17:08it just means that they're included
- 17:10and I think that sometimes
- 17:11for the people who are watching right
- 17:13those watchers
- 17:13they know that they want to support right
- 17:15they want to support it's like
- 17:16kind of like what Megan said before
- 17:18they want to offer their support
- 17:19they want to offer encouragement
- 17:21and sometimes they don't really know how to do that
- 17:23and on the flip side if we
- 17:24as patients
- 17:25are keeping things so private that nobody even knows
- 17:27when you're going through cancer
- 17:29how can we expect someone to rally right
- 17:30like so I think that putting yourself out there
- 17:32just being a little bit vulnerable
- 17:33and just letting people know where you're at
- 17:35how far you've come and just celebrating that
- 17:37and inviting them to celebrate that with you
- 17:39in the New Year is huge
- 17:41and also I know it's always hard to ask for help and
- 17:45you know especially financially and donations
- 17:47but also remember that a lot of people do
- 17:51like to do charitable giving every year
- 17:53for their own tax benefits
- 17:55and so if somebody's already looking
- 17:57for somewhere to put their money
- 17:59and then their friend pops up
- 18:01with a opportunity like this
- 18:03they might be like oh
- 18:04my gosh that's exactly what I needed
- 18:05I I need to give to a charity this year
- 18:07for my tax benefit and
- 18:08you know I just want to
- 18:10I'm gonna go with A Cure In Sight this year
- 18:12because it popped up and I was invited to
- 18:14so
- 18:14don't assume that you are putting people out by asking
- 18:17you might actually be doing them a favor
- 18:19I've noticed that people are just so generous and just
- 18:23um it doesn't matter
- 18:24you know if you have a set goal in mind
- 18:27let's call it 10,000
- 18:28I think people just wanna give to their own generosity
- 18:31and their what they
- 18:32you know they wanna give towards a cure
- 18:34and so that's been the the cool thing to see
- 18:37about steps for sight
- 18:38is that we're not asking for a set dollar amount
- 18:41you know we're asking for you to just join us
- 18:43um and so to see each year
- 18:45people join and hit some of these crazy goals is
- 18:48is awesome
- 18:49it's something that I'm proud to be a part of
- 18:52and then um
- 18:54also just excited to share with other people
- 18:57um I
- 18:57I love to do weekly updates too
- 18:59to kind of show people who are walking with us
- 19:02that impact um
- 19:04and anyone who joins steps for sight
- 19:06you can follow along in the app Charity Footprints
- 19:09to see how we are doing each day
- 19:11each week
- 19:12and I know A Cure In Sight sets up a overall goal
- 19:15as well to see if we can um
- 19:17hit some of these big numbers
- 19:19so it's it's really exciting to be a part of
- 19:21to see the the numbers go up each week
- 19:23each day and see everyone walk 7,000 steps um
- 19:28and make goals for that landmark as well
- 19:31Kristen thank you so much for joining us today
- 19:33to talk about steps for sight
- 19:34and your journey with the KMac Fights Back team
- 19:36we're so stoked to see you guys just like
- 19:39crushing it on the leaderboard again
- 19:40um and also like
- 19:41let's just put the challenge out there
- 19:43there might be
- 19:43there might be somebody who's up and coming
- 19:45and they might just
- 19:45totally beat you guys out of that top
- 19:47number one spot um
- 19:48so if that happens like
- 19:49I mean I love that you're such a good sport about it
- 19:51and yes
- 19:52like I know I would love it
- 19:53watch out for Kristen watch out for KMAC

- 19:57participating in steps for sight again

- 20:57we're happy to have you absolutely well
- 20:59and I mean even if you think about it
- 21:00like if you have 10 people who sign up
- 21:02the last day of January
- 21:04and they all walk 7,000 steps at least
- 21:06on that next day
- 21:08that's 70,000 extra steps that go toward the total of
- 21:11how many steps did we walk toward ocular
- 21:13or for ocular melanoma this year
- 21:15no impact is too small
- 21:16so keep that in mind you guys like
- 21:18it is never too late to join for steps for sight
- 21:20and
- 21:21if you have had the opportunity
- 21:22to connect with ocular melanoma patients
- 21:24maybe start a team together
- 21:26bring your communities together as like
- 21:28you know the
- 21:28you know Arizona Omies group or something like
- 21:30to that effect
- 21:31but also like
- 21:32if you're part of any of the 5Ks that we have
- 21:35they're looking for a cure
- 21:365Ks
- 21:37send out an email to all of your team members
- 21:38who came and walked locally
- 21:40send out an email to any of those sponsors
- 21:42that you helped find for us
- 21:43and just make sure that they know
- 21:44that they can participate in this
- 21:45because like
- 21:46there's
- 21:47there's no reason we wouldn't want to walk twice
- 21:49and like
- 21:50what if instead of walking just for the one day
- 21:52like we're walking every day for a month
- 21:55um
- 21:55how much more impact is that gonna have on our health
- 21:57on our mental health
- 21:59that's a huge thing for January as well
- 22:01I just think
- 22:01the ripple effect of all of us joining together
- 22:03and just showing that we're on the same team
- 22:05showing up together as a community online is huge
- 22:08I agree and
- 22:09we're gonna have to walk off
- 22:10all these holiday desserts
- 22:11we're about to eat so everybody
- 22:14you can have your Christmas cookies guilt free
- 22:17because you know
- 22:18you're gonna do steps for sight
- 22:19and you're gonna walk all of that off
- 22:22haha absolutely
- 22:23um okay

- 22:31there are other activities you can do
