- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the.
- 0:21World. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. We are actually in the garage
- 0:32and we are sitting on the couch that we have in the garage with
- 0:35Miss Amelia. Can you say hi?
- 0:37Miss Amelia is sitting here wrapped in a towel and you last
- 0:42night when I went to put the chickens away, I found her in
- 0:46the hay, not sitting up top where she normally is in her
- 0:49spot. And completely and totally her
- 0:52wings were all spread out to the sides.
- 0:55And nothing wrong with her. She seemed alert, but obviously
- 0:59that is not the right position for her to be in.
- 1:02So I picked her up and her feet were all clenched into little
- 1:06balls. So that's always an indication
- 1:08that something is definitely not right.
- 1:10And I brought her into the garage.
- 1:12We got our electrolytes immediately, not knowing what
- 1:15could be going on. She didn't have any visible
- 1:17signs of trauma or any of that. And of course, because they are
- 1:23my girls and I get very close to them.
- 1:25And Amelia, I've had her for, let's see, four years, yeah,
- 1:31four years now, and she is one of my favorites.
- 1:35She's the one that comes and steals all the figs and loves
- 1:40figs with me, is in the garden with me all the time.
- 1:43So this is this is a tough one for me.
- 1:46And I sat with her bawling trying to figure out what we
- 1:50could do. And obviously it was 830 at
- 1:54night and there wasn't a heck of a lot we could do except give
- 1:57her electrolytes and see what happens.
- 1:59Well, this morning I went to the coop and I put her in a separate
- 2:03spot so she would be OK. And I got out there very early
- 2:07before any of the other girls woke up.
- 2:09And came, you know, grabbed her and she was still, she was OK.
- 2:13She looked perkier. And what's interesting is when
- 2:15chickens are not well, the comb on the top of their head becomes
- 2:19pale. It has this strange draining of
- 2:22color. It looks very odd when it
- 2:24happens. So you know, something's going
- 2:26on. So this morning, her comb color
- 2:29is back, and she seems to be much perkier.
- 2:33She seems to be a little bit on so immediately I went and got
- 2:38her some breakfast. We had a side dish of rice and
- 2:42corn last night. So I know she loves that stuff.
- 2:45And I got her a couple of figs off the trees which she ate and
- 2:49I gave her more electrolytes and she is sitting on the couch in
- 2:53here now. She got up and what I actually
- 2:56think happened to her is that she might have a broken egg
- 2:58inside of her, which is really not good for chickens.
- 3:02I mean, this is it's like it can really cause them to die.
- 3:06But quite honestly, you know, I like to tell you guys all the
- 3:10truth on here. She pooped and it looked like a
- 3:14big chunk of the egg itself came out, didn't look like normal
- 3:18chicken poop. So here we are, we have to wait.
- 3:23We just have to wait and see and see how it goes.
- 3:26And I'm going to go to Tractor Supply and I'm going to get her
- 3:29antibiotics in case in fact, it is that we can deal with it
- 3:33right away because thank goodness we can get chicken
- 3:36antibiotics. The Tractor Supply, because you
- 3:38can't just get them anywhere. And for those of you wondering
- 3:41why don't I just take her to the vet, Well, try to find a vet
- 3:43that will see a chicken. It doesn't happen anymore.
- 3:46It's the days of having the doctor pole in the neighborhood
- 3:50that will see any vet at any time are really gone and most of
- 3:54the vets when you call them for are exotic animals, won't even
- 3:57touch them. It's extremely frustrating.
- 4:00So even if I could get my vet, Doctor Reyes is amazing and I
- 4:05love him and I'm sure if I took her to him he would do
- 4:09everything he could. However, he's not open on a
- 4:11Saturday. So here we are.
- 4:14We are waiting and we're going to see what we can pull off
- 4:17ourselves between our knowledge, the first hand book, knowledge
- 4:21of looking it up, Tractor Supply knowledge and trying to work
- 4:25through this. But the point of telling you all
- 4:28of this is this is always the hardest part for me.
- 4:32I don't do well with this. I live in a fairy tale world in
- 4:37my head of them always being OK and when they're not OK, it
- 4:41freaks me out. I will do everything I can.
- 4:45I'm relentless with it, I will work at it.
- 4:48But it does internally I can feel myself going like panic
- 4:53mode, like somebody has lit my hair on fire inside my head and
- 4:56I am running around trying to fix it.
- 4:58So externally, you would never know that, but internally that's
- 5:01happening. And I think it's important to
- 5:03know when you are, you know, talking to everybody.
- 5:07When I'm coaching, I always want everybody to know the truth.
- 5:09I want them to know about what's happening.
- 5:11So while I may look calm and cool and collected on the
- 5:14outside today, I will be panicked on the inside like I
- 5:17was last night when I found her. And I will manage it.
- 5:21I will get through this regardless of the outcome.
- 5:24But I and I realized chickens have short lives.
- 5:27Sometimes they do many things to, you know, kill themselves.
- 5:31It's amazing how they get into things, but every so often, you
- 5:35know, while all my chickens are special, there are a handful
- 5:38that are super special and she is one of them.
- 5:41And she's one of my original girls.
- 5:43And I'm going to do everything I can to make sure she's OK and
- 5:47manage my state in the process. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:50you have a blessed day and say little prayers for us over here.
- 5:53Talk to you soon, bye.
