- Lucas: Luna, ready for another tiny German lesson? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practicing the weather phrases from last time. 'Die Sonne scheint.' Lucas: Perfect. Today we're talking about pets. Haustiere. Luna: Oh, I love pets! What's the word for 'dog'? Lucas: Der Hund. Der Hund. Luna: Der Hund. So 'the dog' is masculine. Lucas: Exactly. And 'cat' is die Katze. Die Katze. Luna: Die Katze. That's feminine. Okay, I can do this. Lucas: Let's do two more. 'Fish' is der Fisch. Der Fisch. Luna: Der Fisch. Like the English word, but with a German twist. Lucas: And 'bird' is der Vogel. Der Vogel. Luna: Der Vogel. That one sounds a bit like 'vogel' – I'll remember it. Lucas: Great. Now let's put them in sentences. If you want to say 'I have a dog', it's 'Ich habe einen Hund.' Luna: Ich habe einen Hund. So 'einen' because it's masculine accusative? Lucas: You got it. And 'I have a cat' would be 'Ich habe eine Katze.' Luna: Ich habe eine Katze. Feminine accusative stays 'eine'. Makes sense. Lucas: Now try saying 'I have a fish'. Luna: Ich habe einen Fisch. Right, because Fisch is masculine. Lucas: Perfect. And 'I have a bird' – 'Ich habe einen Vogel.' Luna: Ich habe einen Vogel. That's easy. Lucas: Now let's ask a question: 'Do you like cats?' is 'Magst du Katzen?' Luna: Magst du Katzen? That's informal, right? Lucas: Yes. And if you want to say 'I like dogs', it's 'Ich mag Hunde.' Luna: Ich mag Hunde. So 'mag' is the verb for 'like'. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a mini conversation. I'll ask you: 'Hast du einen Hund?' Luna: Nein, ich habe eine Katze. Ich mag Katzen. Lucas: Sehr gut! You just said 'No, I have a cat. I like cats.' Luna: That felt natural. Can we do one more? Lucas: Sure. 'Hast du einen Vogel?' Luna: Nein, ich habe keinen Vogel. Aber ich mag Vögel.
