- 0:05Speaker 1: proud progressive. John Cobalt is host of The John Cobalt
- 0:09Speaker 1: Show on k i AM six forty here in Los
- 0:11Speaker 1: Angeles and available everywhere in podcast form on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:15Speaker 1: One of the most popular podcasts on the iHeartRadio App.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome both of you. Good to see you. Welcome to
- 0:19Speaker 1: the story is thank you our.
- 0:21Speaker 2: New showy CNN.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Yes, good look, thank you very much. It's fun. You
- 0:26Speaker 1: just watched the interview with Nancy Pelosi, very strong words,
- 0:31Speaker 1: almost very personal words. What do you make of what
- 0:34Speaker 1: she said and why do you think it was so
- 0:35Speaker 1: personal about the president?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Well, she's got guts and she's been fighting against him,
- 0:39Speaker 2: not only this time around, but the first time around
- 0:41Speaker 2: as well. And she's right. He doesn't honor the Constitution.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's why seven million Americans, including me, were out of
- 0:46Speaker 2: the No Kings protest because he's not a king. He's
- 0:49Speaker 2: supposed to respect the separation of powers, respect the rule
- 0:52Speaker 2: of law, and he doesn't do that. That gets her mad.
- 0:55Speaker 2: That gets a lot of us.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Matt, does it get you mad? No?
- 0:58Speaker 3: I thought she said early in the nie she didn't
- 1:00Speaker 3: want to get personal about Trump. I guess she forgot
- 1:04Speaker 3: that by the end of the interview. She also said
- 1:06Speaker 3: that Trump abolished the House of Representatives. I was out
- 1:09Speaker 3: of the country for two weeks. I don't remember that happening.
- 1:12Speaker 3: It's just more hyperbole, more hysteria.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But Mike, they have run out of her point is
- 1:17Speaker 1: that Mike Johnson has not called it into a session
- 1:19Speaker 1: in over a month, right, and.
- 1:21Speaker 2: They all have to bend the need to Trump and
- 1:22Speaker 2: do what he says. And that's what they do.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I can't remember Congress not following the lead of the
- 1:27Speaker 3: president if they were both in the same party.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Well, that's what they do.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The difference between the lead and the president saying he's
- 1:33Speaker 2: going to primary you primary you. If you dare to
- 1:36Speaker 2: disagree with anything that he.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Will, well then you have to fight for your your opinion.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Yeah, then you do.
- 1:42Speaker 4: People get primaried all the time. That's the way life is.
- 1:44Speaker 2: This is a separate branch of government that's supposed to
- 1:47Speaker 2: have their own backbone, and none of the Republicans will
- 1:50Speaker 2: stand up to him even though they know he's wrong,
- 1:52Speaker 2: even though they say in private they just disagree with
- 1:55Speaker 2: a lot of the Trump polib.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Well, then maybe they should be run out of office
- 1:57Speaker 4: that they're that.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Way, and then we're going to get more or they're
- 2:00Speaker 3: doing what their constituents want.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Why can't you just admit that Trump is the one
- 2:04Speaker 2: that's causing this problem not allowing Congress to be independent?
- 2:08Speaker 4: What problem?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Not allowing Congress to be independent?
- 2:11Speaker 3: He allows them they can do whatever they want. They've
- 2:13Speaker 3: known too session tomorrow and vote against him.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I mean Speaker Johnson is choosing not to call he called,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I mean, Pelosi called them a puppet. What did you
- 2:22Speaker 1: make of? What of what Pelosi said about about Well,
- 2:26Speaker 1: let's let's talk about Prop fifty now, which is what
- 2:28Speaker 1: this whole bill was about. And I tried to sort
- 2:31Speaker 1: of get into the specifics of it. She made it
- 2:34Speaker 1: a lot about President Trump. But this idea of jerry
- 2:37Speaker 1: manderin California, because Texas Republicans jerry mandered their state.
- 2:42Speaker 4: It was wrong in Texas, it's wrong here.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Now there's a but seven other states that are going
- 2:47Speaker 3: to jerry mander and get about ten extra seats back
- 2:50Speaker 3: to the Republicans. So this Newsome plan is going to backfire.
- 2:54Speaker 3: It's a fiasco. He got five to match Texas. Now
- 2:58Speaker 3: he's going to lose another ten. Because it's a back
- 3:00Speaker 3: and forth thing. There was a lot more room for
- 3:02Speaker 3: the Republicans to jerrymander and pick up seats than there
- 3:05Speaker 3: was for Democrats. Democrats have been doing it for so
- 3:08Speaker 3: long they're kind of at a room. There's nowhere to go.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I've said that to Nancy Pelosi, by the way, we
- 3:13Speaker 1: had to cut that for time, and she it sort
- 3:16Speaker 1: of disagrees with the way you do the math, but
- 3:18Speaker 1: it is an interesting point.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Well, Democrats in California have not been doing it. We've
- 3:22Speaker 2: had an independent commission that's established the districts, and Texas
- 3:26Speaker 2: did what it did, skewing things in favor of Republicans
- 3:30Speaker 2: because Trump told them to, and then they did. And
- 3:32Speaker 2: two runs don't make a right, but they do make
- 3:34Speaker 2: a point. Trump allow the Republicans, they choose, they change badly,
- 3:39Speaker 2: they grab power, and the Democrats are going to sit back.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And doing the process that we have to process. Did
- 3:45Speaker 1: put out a true social post saying that he was
- 3:47Speaker 1: entitled to five seats. That were his own words that
- 3:49Speaker 1: he put out.
- 3:50Speaker 4: But he's not.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And you could always contradict him. You're just talking about
- 3:54Speaker 3: this was.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Too afraid to contradict him. They bent the knee, just
- 3:57Speaker 2: like all the.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Well, they were afraid. They're not doing their job, and
- 4:00Speaker 4: then they ought to be.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Voted out for that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Okay, they're not doing that.
- 4:03Speaker 3: They have the free they have the freedom to agree
- 4:06Speaker 3: with Trump. Everybody in the Republican Party can agree with
- 4:09Speaker 3: the Republican leader. I don't think Obama or Biden ran
- 4:12Speaker 3: into too much.
- 4:13Speaker 2: They have freedom to agree with Trump, but they don't
- 4:15Speaker 2: have the freedom to disagree with Trump. Otherwise they're voted out.
- 4:19Speaker 2: There who there's a retribution.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Wait, wait, voted out? Maybe they get voted out by
- 4:25Speaker 4: const eoj.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Will come after them former Republicans.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But to John's point, I mean, the Republicans are representing Republicans.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And is it fair if this whole thing happens with Prop.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Fifty that people that live in fairy Republican areas are
- 4:40Speaker 1: now going to be represented by Democratic members who really
- 4:44Speaker 1: are not representing their interests.
- 4:46Speaker 2: No, it's not fair, but it's the only thing that
- 4:48Speaker 2: we can do now that Texas is picking up five
- 4:51Speaker 2: seats unfairly.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Will you tell me democracy is under threat now?
- 4:54Speaker 3: You're taking the Republican Congress there might have been there.
- 4:57Speaker 4: For decades from rural areas and California.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And I saw one of the districts it's drawn from
- 5:03Speaker 3: the from East California all the.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Way to Marine Texas is doing I did. I said,
- 5:11Speaker 2: Californiania Texas start. Let's you agree on that.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Texas started the problem.
- 5:18Speaker 3: But that doesn't mean Californians lose their congress person.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It's two different stiles.
- 5:23Speaker 4: I don't care what they do.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Meanwhile, let's talk about what's happening in New York. This
- 5:28Speaker 1: big race that's going to get a whole lot of attention.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Uh Zoron Mundani, a democratic socialist, sort of looks like
- 5:36Speaker 1: the future. Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo, the traditional Democrat, kind of
- 5:40Speaker 1: looks like the past. President Trump weighing in and then
- 5:46Speaker 1: saying that he would back Cuomo. This is what Cuomo said,
- 5:53Speaker 1: This is what Trump said. Excuse me here. It is.
- 5:56Speaker 2: What if Mandami becomes mayor, It's.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Going to be hard for me as the president to
- 6:01Speaker 5: give a lot of money to New York because if
- 6:05Speaker 5: you have a communist running New York, all you're doing
- 6:08Speaker 5: is wasting the money. You're sending there. So I don't
- 6:11Speaker 5: know that he's one, and I'm not a fan of
- 6:13Speaker 5: Cuomo one way or the other. But if it's going
- 6:15Speaker 5: to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I'm
- 6:19Speaker 5: going to pick that bad Democrat all the time.
- 6:21Speaker 1: To be honest with you, I mean that was quite
- 6:24Speaker 1: an endorsement.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You can always count on Trump to support the guy
- 6:28Speaker 2: with multiple sexual harassment allegations. In Cuomo's case twelve and
- 6:32Speaker 2: Trump's case twenty six, I represented four of them. So
- 6:35Speaker 2: there's no way that I could ever support Cuomo given
- 6:37Speaker 2: that I'm a sexual harassment lawyer. Right, I think I'm Donnie.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He's not a communist, he's a democratic socialist.
- 6:43Speaker 4: And they're going to take over the stores in Manhattan.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Taking over all the grocery stores. You know that's not true. Well,
- 6:49Speaker 2: should be picked, not take over all? Should be some.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Do you know the difference between some and all? There's
- 6:58Speaker 2: a big difference.
- 6:59Speaker 4: A test run file.
- 7:01Speaker 2: The Republican Party is denying food benefits to people right now.
- 7:04Speaker 2: The Democrats actually care about lowering prices, getting groceries to
- 7:08Speaker 2: people and free and fast buses is a great platform.
- 7:11Speaker 4: And we're getting a fast bus.
- 7:13Speaker 3: We should have that nobody, So where do you get
- 7:14Speaker 3: the money to pay for the free bus by taxing billionaires?
- 7:17Speaker 2: You know, New York City is not just for the billionaires.
- 7:19Speaker 1: It's for the working part. You're concerned though, that that
- 7:22Speaker 1: may drive some of those billionaires to leave New York.
- 7:24Speaker 2: People have been saying that for years, and taxes have
- 7:27Speaker 2: been raised on billionaires when they're not leaving you.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Whut let them go to New York, Texas in Florida.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Well then how do you pay for the buses if
- 7:35Speaker 3: you let them all go?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Because they're not.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Going to have bush.
- 7:38Speaker 2: You need to let them all go. They can go
- 7:39Speaker 2: now if they want to go. People who love New York.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Moved to Dallas to Miami.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Let them go. So you think wins absolutely?
- 7:48Speaker 2: And I think he should win. I think he's going to
- 7:49Speaker 2: be wonderful.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Do you think he wins?
- 7:51Speaker 3: Probably if you believe all the polls, but it's going
- 7:55Speaker 3: to be bad.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Would you vote for Cuomo if you lived in New York? Yes? Yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: even though he would be a bad Democrats?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Would I would put up with a guy who's a
- 8:03Speaker 3: multiple sexual harasser over a communist guy.
- 8:06Speaker 4: But if that's what Curtis Slay was kind of a
- 8:09Speaker 4: local joke. I mean, that's the thing.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I mean, he talks, he makes sense, but nobody takes
- 8:15Speaker 3: me seriously.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Meanwhile, you're a New Jersey guy originally, right, They're they're
- 8:19Speaker 1: having a race which seems to be surprisingly close between
- 8:24Speaker 1: what do you make of that race and where we're
- 8:26Speaker 1: at on them?
- 8:27Speaker 3: You know, in Jersey, Chris Christie was the governor there
- 8:29Speaker 3: just a few years ago, right in the back of
- 8:32Speaker 3: the nineties, Christine Todd, Whitman, Tom Caine back in the eighties,
- 8:35Speaker 3: Like all my life growing up in Jersey, there were
- 8:37Speaker 3: always Republican governors moderate. There was nothing outrageous. They have
- 8:42Speaker 3: bad property taxes and they have bad electricity rates in
- 8:45Speaker 3: New Jersey. And one day this phenomenon is going to
- 8:48Speaker 3: hit California because there's nothing worse than the gas prices
- 8:52Speaker 3: and the electricity rates we have in this state and
- 8:54Speaker 3: people there are doing something about it. And you got
- 8:57Speaker 3: like a fifty to fifty race.
- 8:59Speaker 1: So what do you think happens in New Jersey? Real quick?
- 9:01Speaker 2: I think Democrat. I think it's going to be a
- 9:02Speaker 2: Democrat sweep tomorrow. People are two to one against Trump now,
- 9:06Speaker 2: and the Republican agenda they're sick of it, just like
- 9:08Speaker 2: we saw an interview a little earlier on CNN of
- 9:11Speaker 2: a Trump voter saying regretted.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Her vote for electricity prices get But it's responsible for.
- 9:18Speaker 1: A big question in both New Jersey and California other places.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Is is it truly a national race about Trump or
- 9:24Speaker 1: is it about local issues? In California, they've made it
- 9:28Speaker 1: a national race about Trump. We'll see what happens in
- 9:31Speaker 1: New Jersey. It'll be interesting to see the results.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Great to see both say Virginia is going to have
- 9:35Speaker 2: a female governor no matter what happens, for the first time,
- 9:38Speaker 2: and that's a good thing.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yes, yes it did, Lisa John, thanks all, see both
- 9:43Speaker 1: of you. This is fun. More of the story is
- 9:46Speaker 1: right after this
