- 0:13perspective for your day. Enjoy.
- 0:17Who's ready to declare today? My heart is open.
- 0:22My ears are alert to grow and change and never be the same.
- 0:31Amen. And then once you take your
- 0:33seat, Nicole, you are louder than everyone.
- 0:37It's awesome. I love it.
- 0:40So who knows that we exist to spiritually and for spiritual
- 0:45and social transformation in our city.
- 0:48This is the purpose of our life. This is the purpose of City
- 0:52Point North and Bribie Island is we are here to not just see a
- 0:56spiritual but also a social transformation in our city.
- 1:02And I love that because spiritual, that's easy for the
- 1:05church to go. Yeah, we want a spiritual
- 1:07transformation, but we want more than just a spirit
- 1:10transformation for you and I. We want to see a spiritual
- 1:15transformation in society, in the world around us, in the
- 1:19world that we live in now. Pastor Mel started the message
- 1:25that we're doing a little like a mini series for three weeks on
- 1:29discipleship who enjoyed that last week and I hope you've all
- 1:33listened to the podcast. If you've never done that
- 1:36before, there is an app out there called podcast.
- 1:40You can download that or basically on all streaming
- 1:43platforms, I think Apple and Google and and all of that.
- 1:46And you go search City Point North and you can listen to
- 1:49every Sunday's messages there and they're very good.
- 1:53So I encourage you to do that from last week.
- 1:56But we titled this mini series Believers to Followers.
- 2:01From Believers to followers. Let me give you some thoughts
- 2:06this morning. There is a start point and an
- 2:10end point to discipleship. The start point is when you're
- 2:16born and the finish point is when you die.
- 2:23There is a context change that happens in a person's
- 2:26discipleship journey. From birth, it's to be the best
- 2:31you. From salvation, it's to become
- 2:35more like Jesus. That's now our purpose.
- 2:39Church, if you're a St. we should endeavour every day to
- 2:43become more and more like Jesus. There are two purposes to
- 2:47discipleship #1 personal discipleship.
- 2:52So growing in one's own relationship with Jesus, but #2
- 2:57making disciples, helping others grow in their faith with Jesus.
- 3:02There is one goal of discipleship, to become more
- 3:06like Jesus in character, in conduct, and in purpose.
- 3:12There are two reasons for discipleship #1 righteous living
- 3:17discipleship matures us, discipleship is designed to
- 3:24mature us, and #2 mission living discipleship is designed to
- 3:30equip us, discipleship is to mature us, and discipleship is
- 3:38to equip us. Let me tell you, discipleship is
- 3:42to mature you and discipleship is to equip you.
- 3:48Discipleship is not planting flowers, it's not riding bikes,
- 3:58it's not driving cars together. But I think God missed that one.
- 4:04I think it should be driving cars together.
- 4:08There are many, many things in the church and in our lives that
- 4:13are parts of discipleship but are not discipleship wrapped up.
- 4:17Let me give you a really good corporate idea of this is life
- 4:21groups. Life groups does not allow us to
- 4:25tick a box of discipleship because the life group is just
- 4:29one small element of discipleship.
- 4:32You don't really want to know what discipleship is, so I'm not
- 4:35going to tell you this morning. I'm just going to get to the
- 4:37word of God. You do Nicole though, don't you?
- 4:43Nicole's my best friend today. He's not even take my jokes
- 4:48anymore. So useful discipleship is when
- 4:54one person completely gives up their whole life and follows
- 5:00another. And we get discipleship through
- 5:04the early church now, I mean, before the Jesus Church in the
- 5:08sense of Old Testament. I'm going all the way back to
- 5:12the Hebrews. All right, the Jews.
- 5:16See, when you turn 14 years old, mum and dad kicked you out of
- 5:20the house and you became a disciple of a disciple or an
- 5:25apostle or a, a, a, what's the word?
- 5:29I'm looking for a rabbi. And so you would then live with
- 5:34the rabbi. And the whole intention of this
- 5:37discipleship was a lifelong journey.
- 5:40I told you you didn't want to hear this.
- 5:42And discipleship is a lifelong journey.
- 5:46And the objective biblically, which we'll get to in a moment
- 5:49in discipleship, is that you would speak like your rabbi,
- 5:54that you would think like your rabbi, that you would have the
- 5:58same concept. You would even sleep as your
- 6:02rabbi slept. This is crazy stuff, right?
- 6:05This is why we don't talk about it much in the church anymore
- 6:08because this is really out there.
- 6:10But let me tell you, we need to be talking about this.
- 6:14It's because I'm learning in my life.
- 6:17I've been, I've been a Christian for 44 great, amazing years.
- 6:22But let me tell you the the Christian journey has completely
- 6:27transformed my life. But where I am today, I should
- 6:31have been about 15 years ago if I had this understanding of what
- 6:37real discipleship is. This is why I would be a
- 6:40different man today. I'm just being honest, OK?
- 6:43I hope this is OK. It's because the people that God
- 6:47had brought into my life and I chose to follow, I would have
- 6:51stopped judging them. I would have stopped criticizing
- 6:55the things I don't agree with. See, obedience isn't obedience
- 7:01until you disagree and discipleship.
- 7:05You want someone's disciple until they can challenge your
- 7:10core and you are a disciple of this person when your core gets
- 7:16challenged. But you say yes Sir.
- 7:20And so This is why choosing correct disciples is so
- 7:24important. Disciple is this or rabbis is so
- 7:27important. It's because we need to look at
- 7:30the person we're about to follow and say they have the fruits of
- 7:35life. They have the fruits of Jesus
- 7:39living that I want in my life. So I lay my life down before
- 7:46you, Sir, and I say, would you take me on the journey?
- 7:50Yes, and the more my core gets challenged, the more my core
- 7:57belief system gets refining and the Bible's got this scripture
- 8:01about iron sharpening iron. But whenever we see real strong,
- 8:05determined God infused iron, we judge it.
- 8:11Well, at least I judge it. I'm just going I'll be honest
- 8:13today. I I judge it.
- 8:15Does anyone else judge it? Like we look at these people,
- 8:19Billy Graham and we judge him, but why would we judge him?
- 8:27Now we're talking about Billy Graham, but you do this too.
- 8:31You go, well, that's God's man for the hour.
- 8:34This is awesome. I love it's like a candle in our
- 8:38midst, the iPad. We, we often say things like
- 8:44that's God's man for the hour, but Jesus never taught us that.
- 8:53That's not what he taught. He said.
- 8:56He said whoever comes after he, he and he exampled it with his
- 9:0012 disciples. He said go heal the sick, cast
- 9:05out demons. He didn't say in history's time,
- 9:09in the future to come, there will be a man.
- 9:13His name's Billy Graham, and he's going to cast out demons,
- 9:19heal the sick. No, no, no.
- 9:21He sent his disciples. And then he said to his church,
- 9:24all of us, he said, I give you this power and authority just as
- 9:30I rose from the dead. The same spirit is in you.
- 9:34And so we have, we have this judgement thing.
- 9:37But let me tell you, every time we're looking at people like
- 9:41this and we're not allowing iron sharpen iron, it's us that gets
- 9:47held back, not them, because they have the revelation.
- 9:51It's us that are struggling with the revelation.
- 9:54And so this is the journey of discipleship.
- 9:58It's that I've had people in my life.
- 10:00I remember Steve, my old music director, he would see things in
- 10:04me and he would just speak life into those things.
- 10:07Man, I wish I didn't judge his every word.
- 10:11I I just really wish his words just flooded over my life.
- 10:14And I just said, if you see it, I'm going to see it because if
- 10:18you speak it, I'm going to speak it.
- 10:20If you behave that way, I'm going to behave that way.
- 10:24You know, we did it in one area of our lives with housing.
- 10:27You know, we allow them to disciple us with housing, Mel
- 10:30and I've had six houses in our life already.
- 10:33We've had investment properties at one point in our life, you
- 10:36know, because iron was sharp and you know, that were teaching us
- 10:40amazing things for our life. Amen.
- 10:43And so these are the purposes of discipleship.
- 10:47Jesus said in the Holy Bible just before leaving planet earth
- 10:51in the book of Matthew chapter 28, he said go therefore and
- 10:56make disciples of all the nations.
- 10:59However, a year or so earlier than that, Jesus taught the
- 11:04reason we need to be disciples, and this is found in the book of
- 11:09Luke, and we're going to look at this now by understanding the
- 11:13reason we need to be disciples and we need to make disciples,
- 11:19we can work out how best to be disciples.
- 11:23So let's look at the reason that he taught us.
- 11:26If you've got your Bible, why don't you just turn turn to the
- 11:29book of Luke and we're going to read from Chapter 9 this
- 11:33morning. It will be up on the screen, so
- 11:35you can read from there as well. In the new King James Version,
- 11:38Luke 91 to 6:00, we're going to read our fair few verses here.
- 11:43It says this titled Sending out the 12.
- 11:48Then he called his 12 disciples together and gave them power and
- 11:53authority over all demons. We already like this.
- 11:56Hey, we're a Pentecostal church. We like this stuff over all
- 11:59demons and to curse diseases. He sent them out to preach the
- 12:04Kingdom of God and to heal the sick man.
- 12:06I love this already. He and he said to them, take
- 12:10nothing for the journey, neither staff nor bag or bread nor
- 12:14money, and do not have two tunics apiece.
- 12:17Whatever house you went to, stay there and from there depart and
- 12:22whoever will not receive you when you go out of that city,
- 12:26shake off the very dust from your feet as the testimony
- 12:30against them. So they departed and went
- 12:33through the towns preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
- 12:37And then the next title in the New King James Version is Herod
- 12:41seeks to seek Jesus, followed by feeding the five thousands,
- 12:45which was a an amazing mirror miracle.
- 12:48And then we have Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, which is
- 12:52all good. And then we're going to pick it
- 12:54up in verse 21. Jesus predicts his death.
- 12:58Just hang with me. I'm going somewhere.
- 13:00Jesus predicts his death and resurrection. 21 And he strictly
- 13:06warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, the
- 13:11Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the
- 13:15elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be
- 13:20raised on the third day. Jesus has expressed that power,
- 13:27authority and blessing of living like Him is ours.
- 13:33Then he expressed the surrender required to live such a life
- 13:38brings transformation to a corrupt world.
- 13:42Then what Jesus says next is not only how disciples would be
- 13:47sustained through Jesus death, but how we all will be sustained
- 13:54through our life. Verse 23 and 24 says this.
- 13:59Then he said to them all, If anyone desires to come after me,
- 14:04say come after me. If anyone desires to come after
- 14:09me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and
- 14:15follow me. For whoever desires to save his
- 14:20life will lose it, but whoever desire loses his life for my
- 14:26sake will save it. The point is surrender.
- 14:35The disciples had power and authority over demons, to curse
- 14:41diseases, to preach the gospel so that you and I to heal the
- 14:47sick. But we need to understand
- 14:50church, that this will bring rejection from society when the
- 14:56church rises up, that we enter a spiritual battle.
- 15:02It's not all just shouting in church on Sunday.
- 15:06It's not all just, well, look what the Lord has done.
- 15:10You know, it's not all just, you know, the joy, the joy of the
- 15:13Lord. It's all of those things.
- 15:16But it also brings rejection because there is a real enemy
- 15:22out there. His name is the devil and he's a
- 15:24deceiver and he's a liar. But for those who do not know
- 15:30Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they come under that
- 15:35that dark cloud of that society is under.
- 15:39But as the church rises up in righteousness, the enemy gets
- 15:43every weapon he has against us. Now, his weapons have no power
- 15:48over us. This is the weird thing.
- 15:50Like, you think he would just give up, right?
- 15:52I would have just given up like a real long time ago.
- 15:55But you know when, when in the Garden of Eden, when God said
- 15:59that the serpent will be on under our heel, I would have
- 16:01just given up then, right? I would just be like, I'm not
- 16:03going to win this. But the reality is, is we human
- 16:08beings feel sometimes like we're under a dark clouds.
- 16:13The pressure, the rejection of society in our schools, in our
- 16:17universities, there's like this. The world is coming against us.
- 16:22No, the world's not really coming against us.
- 16:25The church is rising up and showing what victory looks like.
- 16:29But the reality is, is we have to fight for the souls of
- 16:33humanity. We have to get into battle for
- 16:37the souls of human humanity. Then Jesus said after that come
- 16:43after me, church, deny yourself, follow me.
- 16:50And then he said, this will give you life, this will give you
- 16:57life. I think sometimes we can
- 17:01struggle with the feelings of life, purpose of life, a new
- 17:08breath of life, because we haven't yet come to the altar
- 17:14and surrendered our all. And when you surrender your all,
- 17:19your all, this will give you life.
- 17:24Jesus is saying I have life and I have life abundant.
- 17:31Who knows in this place that when Christ sets you free, you
- 17:36are free indeed. Who believes that?
- 17:39I know we all do. Let me tell you this freedom is
- 17:44the breath, fresh breath, the Holy Spirit breath of life.
- 17:51But to walk in this breath, this newness, newness of life, to be
- 17:58a new creation constantly on the forming of new constantly of the
- 18:04on the journey of I'm a new creation.
- 18:07I have been born again into a new life as we surrender every
- 18:13single day like a disciple with a rabbi.
- 18:17And we we, we surrender ourselves, our will, our
- 18:21desires, our passions as as God, as Jesus said in in the book of
- 18:27Galatians, he said those who are in Christ crucify their flesh
- 18:31with their passions and the desires.
- 18:34And I, I used to read that and go, really, you want all of that
- 18:38from me. And I've learnt that the more I
- 18:41give to him, the more breath of life I have inside of me, The
- 18:45more that God feels me, the more that he sustains me, the more I
- 18:49feel the the movings and The Walking in power.
- 18:53Let me ask a question, what is your prayer life like, Church,
- 18:58What is your prayer life like? Because there's no shortcuts.
- 19:03If you want more, you pray more. If you want more, you read more.
- 19:08If you want more, you surrender more.
- 19:11In fact, the the the objective is surrender.
- 19:15All the big idea here is surrender allows discipleship
- 19:21and equals really living. Surrender allows discipleship.
- 19:30Discipleship does not mean surrender.
- 19:37And I think we've got this wrong.
- 19:40I've had this wrong because I thought I'm being discipled.
- 19:44That is my surrender. But I get discipled when I
- 19:51surrender. That's true discipleship here.
- 19:56I judge here. I've got nothing left to judge
- 20:01with here. I'm my own restriction here.
- 20:10I'm at surrender to my rabbi, my apostle, my apostle, my
- 20:15disciple. Does this make sense?
- 20:19And then let's take this to gospel here.
- 20:28I'm under the will of Jesus because I've surrendered all.
- 20:33Now He can mould me. Does this make sense?
- 20:39But in the church, if we're too, not too focused, but only
- 20:46focused on discipleship, we stop allowing Jesus into every room
- 20:54of our hearts of our lives. But As for me in my house, we
- 21:00will serve the Lord. Not As for me in my entryway, As
- 21:06for me in my lounge room where I sit and pray with Jesus.
- 21:11As for me in my every room, every fibre, every part, all the
- 21:17furniture, every dream of this house, we will serve the Lord.
- 21:21Amen. And so surrender allows
- 21:25discipleship have its place. And when we get there, let me
- 21:30tell you, church, the word of God inside of us comes alive and
- 21:35that's where the really living happens.
- 21:37That's when you walk out and you pray for someone and they get
- 21:40healed. Remember, He gave you the power
- 21:43to cast out demons and to to cure diseases and to heal the
- 21:47sick. He's given to preach the gospel.
- 21:50Who's preachers in this house? Lift your hands right now.
- 21:53If you know that you've got a gift of preaching on your life,
- 21:56lift your get bold, get bold. I know there's people here that
- 22:00know it, have never done it, never walked in it, never been
- 22:03seen yet and you've got to. I just speak over you right now.
- 22:08Would you allow your soul and your spirit man be discipled
- 22:15because your disciple will get you to the destiny that God has
- 22:19on your life. Amen.
- 22:21You know what I love about the idea of a rabbi is a rabbi or,
- 22:26or the person that I'm being discipled by, They, they are so
- 22:32invested in me that they will, they will move the world for me.
- 22:38That makes life, it makes life so easy to walk in and to live
- 22:42in. Amen, Luke 1427 says.
- 22:47And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me cannot
- 22:51be my disciple. Matthew 1038 And who?
- 22:57He who does not take his cross and follow after me, is not
- 23:02worthy of me. Can you see this Surrender
- 23:07first, Mark 834 And whoever desires to come after me, let
- 23:13him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
- 23:17The denying is before the following because if you follow,
- 23:21you're just following a person, but when you deny yourself,
- 23:24you're actually following Jesus, not the person.
- 23:27Amen. So through the lens of
- 23:30discipleship, God is calling us to obedience but desires
- 23:34surrender. I just dropped gold and no one
- 23:37got it. Oh my gosh, I'm just going to.
- 23:39I just said it too far. Did I say it too far?
- 23:42God is calling us to obedience, but He desires surrender.
- 23:49Let me tell you something, obedience is what I do.
- 23:53It's not what you call me too or require of me.
- 23:59The obedience is the followers responsibility.
- 24:05When the leader requires obedience it's called
- 24:08dictatorship. This needs to sink.
- 24:13Is this sinking? Is this good?
- 24:16I have to come with a heart and a spirit of obedience, not
- 24:23judgement, but the one that I am following.
- 24:27Even Jesus didn't do this. If we are got people that we are
- 24:33disciple in and we expect them to be obedience, that reminds me
- 24:38of someone else in history. What's his name?
- 24:42Hitler. It's true Jesus desires
- 24:51surrender, and when we can get ourselves to the place of
- 24:56surrender, we want to do nothing more than obey.
- 25:03Does this make sense? And sometimes we get more
- 25:07focused on the obedience. But God doesn't just want blind
- 25:13obedience, He wants everything. This is the New Testament.
- 25:19The difference between tithes and generosity.
- 25:22Tithes is 10%. It's law, generosity,
- 25:26everything, everything. It's everything.
- 25:31God is calling us to obedience, but really he desires surrender.
- 25:35Obedience is doing what God commands.
- 25:38Surrender is yielding your will to God's will.
- 25:41Obedience is behaviour and actions.
- 25:43Surrender is heart and posture. Obedience is rooted in faith,
- 25:48fear, and duty. Surrender is rooted in trust,
- 25:50love, and humility. Surrender desires
- 25:54transformation, but obedience doesn't.
- 25:59Surrender desires transformation, but obedience
- 26:02doesn't. The biblical objective of
- 26:05discipleship is to become like Christ and help others to do the
- 26:09same. Discipleship is not just about
- 26:11learning information or behaviour, but about
- 26:14transformation, becoming more like Jesus, and character,
- 26:18conduct and mission. Surrender is the catalyst to
- 26:24transformative discipleship. Amen.
- 26:29You believe that today. And So what I would love to do
- 26:32right now, very unnormal in a church, but I want to open up
- 26:37the altar this morning. And so I've asked some spirit
- 26:41LED musos. I got like that because that's
- 26:43the that's the spirit thing. The twinkling feels of the
- 26:47spirit. Is that all right?
- 26:49Can everyone just do that right now?
- 26:53And so as these guys lead us in some atmosphere, can we just all
- 27:01stand to our feet for just a moment?
- 27:03I'm going to continue in the message, but I've asked just to
- 27:09sing a great song that I remember as a kid that is
- 27:14appropriate in this very moment. You've been listening to this
- 27:21and you're like, Pastor Gray. I'm not sure I've got myself to
- 27:26that point where I surrender all I believe all I believe the word
- 27:35of God, but I haven't really surrendered.
- 27:39Pastor Grey. I can I can see right now that
- 27:42when I read the word, even I judge it, I go, is this for me?
- 27:48Can I do this? Do I want to how how does this
- 27:52happen? God and, and we're looking at
- 27:55the word and we're filtering the word of God instead of letting
- 27:58the word of God filter us. And so I know this can be bold
- 28:05right now, and I'm just going to open the altar.
- 28:09We call this an altar because at an altar you sacrifice, we
- 28:14surrender all. And so Tyron's just going to
- 28:17sing that chorus for us a couple times.
- 28:20And if you'd like to come down and just say, God, I'm moving
- 28:24beyond rooms of my house, I'm going to give you the house.
- 28:31I'm not just giving you hopes. I'm giving you my will.
- 28:36I'm giving you my everything. Or to me, or bless the say girl.
- 28:59Or to me and do more. Or to heed my lessons that
- 30:33surrender. You know, I remember a song,
- 31:09this song being sung when I was a kid and I remember the posture
- 31:15of my heart this particular day in Townsville where I did, I did
- 31:21what these people are all doing and I do it all the time.
- 31:25It's not a once off thing because the Bible says that we
- 31:28wrestle against flesh and spirit daily.
- 31:32There's this wrestle. The flesh wants to do what the
- 31:35flesh wants to do, but the spirit is craving more of God,
- 31:40more of righteousness, more of purity.
- 31:43And so the surrender idea is a daily Christian walk.
- 31:49It's part of our Christian journey.
- 31:52And I know that there's people that aren't out here, but you
- 31:55are out here. I, I, this isn't any form of
- 32:00grading Christianity because I understand, because I didn't
- 32:05come out the front. I, I sat right at the back as a
- 32:08kid, teenager. But you know, sometimes the
- 32:13action, remember, it's not about obedience as much as it is about
- 32:24surrender. So if you were wishing you were
- 32:29out the front, could I just give you another little option?
- 32:33Why don't you just hop to your knees and surrender?
- 32:38What a great noble thing to do. And I know that this can be
- 32:45revealing for some of us. This is what I love about the
- 32:49Christian journey is when you gave your life to Jesus, you
- 32:54surrendered all, but it's just the journey of continually
- 33:01walking that which is just so powerful.
- 33:05Can I just pray? Holy Spirit, thank you for your
- 33:09presence. Lord God, in this place right
- 33:17now, there are people that have never given their lives to you.
- 33:24There are people that are fresh that gave their lives to you
- 33:28maybe this year. And then there's some of us,
- 33:31Lord God, that have grown up in the church.
- 33:36Father, wherever we're at, you don't see us like this.
- 33:42We are all your children and so far they're in this place.
- 33:50I just pray that you do a transformative work inside of
- 33:53us. Father, we want to go from being
- 33:57soul LED to being spirit LED. We want to go from being flesh
- 34:07LED to being spirit LED. Father, we want to move daily
- 34:15from allowing the thoughts and the burdens of the enemy in our
- 34:19minds dictating to our lives, but we want to be spirit LED.
- 34:28And so, Father, I just pray, would you mould us, every one of
- 34:31us in this place? Let it be done according to our
- 34:36faith in Jesus mighty name, Amen.
- 34:42Amen. You know, I've got a little bit
- 34:46more of my message and I didn't really think this through.
- 34:51It's so I don't know if we want to do a little bit of a youth
- 34:54rally concept where you stay at the front and I preach.
- 34:57That's very exciting. Otherwise, feel free to take
- 35:00your seats. And we're just such a blessed
- 35:06church, such a blessed church. Thank you Jesus.
- 35:17I want to move the message now in just the last few moments
- 35:23that we got to some practical teaching for you and I.
- 35:28We now know the reason. But I want to give you 5 keys of
- 35:33discipleship. Number one, desire and seek God
- 35:40first before seeking a person to disciple you.
- 35:46Scripture shows that discipleship begins with the
- 35:50heart surrendered to God. Proverbs 35 to six.
- 35:56It's not on the screen. It says trust in the Lord with
- 35:59all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all
- 36:05your ways. Acknowledge him and he will
- 36:07direct our paths. You know, in giving our lives to
- 36:11Jesus, I know that you remember that you did that because you,
- 36:21you need guidance in your life. You knew that your way wasn't
- 36:26the way. The way is Jesus Christ, and so
- 36:31you surrendered. If you want to be discipled,
- 36:34first ask God to lead you to the right person.
- 36:39That's how discipleship works #2 be teachable and willing to
- 36:43follow. In the Bible, those who were
- 36:47discipled had a teachable spirit and a willingness to submit to
- 36:52guidance. In Second Kings 2, we see Elijah
- 36:56and Elijah. Elijah refused to leave him
- 37:00alone. He needs to be discipled.
- 37:03In the the book of Luke, the disciples left everything and
- 37:07followed Jesus. In Acts, the Ethiopian eunuch
- 37:14says, how can I understand unless someone guides me?
- 37:20Are you ready to learn to serve and to be corrected?
- 37:28And then #3 we look within the body of Christ.
- 37:32Biblically, discipleship happens within the local church or the
- 37:36community of faith. In Titus, the older men and
- 37:40women are to train the younger in the godly living.
- 37:45Let me tell you something, discipleship isn't going to
- 37:50appear peer relationships that you feel safe in.
- 38:02That's not discipleship. You don't go to those people
- 38:06just because they accept you the way you are.
- 38:09You want people that don't accept you the way you are
- 38:12because they see greater on your life.
- 38:16People that are going to call things out of you, not just
- 38:19accept your dysfunction. This is makes sense.
- 38:23So this is this. If you're older than 44, A 45
- 38:29man, I just had my birthday this year.
- 38:31If you're older than 45, I need you.
- 38:37I need you. I need your wisdom.
- 38:41You know, I know, I know that I'm very, very young.
- 38:45I get that, which makes you very young too.
- 38:54I'm very, very young and you're very young.
- 38:59But here's the thing, if you're older than someone, they need
- 39:05you and they need you to continue growing so that you can
- 39:14take them further than where you are now.
- 39:16Does this make sense? This is the discipleship model
- 39:24#4 initiate, initiate relationship and ask humbling.
- 39:30Jesus called these 12 disciples, but we also see examples where
- 39:35people pursued mentors like in Ruth.
- 39:39Your people will be my people. What if she never said that?
- 39:45And your God will be my God. Elijah left his family to follow
- 39:52Elijah and asked. Timothy joined Paul because he
- 39:56was well spoken of. He had a reputation.
- 40:00Of a as a godly, well spoken man who knew his stuff, man, you've
- 40:07got to disciple me. Mel and I are so desperate for
- 40:11this. We paid someone this year to
- 40:15disciple us. We were like, because they're
- 40:20they're in a world greater than us.
- 40:23We're like, how do we get into that world?
- 40:24We'll just pay for their time now.
- 40:27They owe us. We've got them.
- 40:32You know. It's biblical and wise to ask
- 40:35someone humbling, would you be willing to walk with me in faith
- 40:39and help me to grow in Christ #5 Watch their life before
- 40:45following their teaching. Don't desire the fruits of a
- 40:52dying tree. I just made that up on the spot.
- 40:55But that was the Holy Spirit. Thank you.
- 41:00But often we do we we go, oh, don't do this.
- 41:06Don't go. I love the fruits of your life.
- 41:12And so please disciple me. Yet that person's not growing
- 41:16anymore, because what that will actually teach you is how to get
- 41:22stagnant in your faith. Look for a tree that's got fruit
- 41:29and fruit and next year more fruit, next season, more fruit.
- 41:34They're growing. You thought that they were at at
- 41:36the top of it and then the next year they go, would someone
- 41:40prune me because I've got my next leg, my next journey, the
- 41:44next part of my life to go. They want fruit.
- 41:48Look for that person because they're going to take you places
- 41:52to someone who models Christ, not just talks about him.
- 41:56There is no such thing as graduation day.
- 42:00Everyone at every stage and at every age needs discipleship.
- 42:06And I want to equip us all in the church today with a great
- 42:10question. So I'd love you to repeat out
- 42:13loud after me. Who's discipling you?
- 42:21Who's discipling you? Church Nicole, you're all over
- 42:26this. Was that you?
- 42:27Listen, this is your Cafe question for today after church,
- 42:34when you go out in the Cafe, because you'll be talking about
- 42:37the message because that's what we do every Sunday.
- 42:41Why don't you ask this question of each other and ask it of
- 42:44yourself as well. Who's disciple in you?
- 42:48If someone's, if someone's offering to be your disciple,
- 42:52the question back is, but who's disciple in you?
- 42:56So we don't want a stagnant tree.
- 42:58We don't want a tree on its last season and then it gets cut
- 43:02down. We want a tree that wants
- 43:03pruning so that it can continue to grow.
- 43:06So if they're growing, you're growing.
- 43:10And then let me tell you, Christian, there is a
- 43:12responsibility on your life to continue to grow.
- 43:16No graduation days here at City Point.
- 43:18NO ma'am. So we all ask of ourselves and
- 43:23the one we want. The band can be with me.
- 43:25I'm on literally my last sentence.
- 43:29We also ask of ourselves and the one we want to disciple us.
- 43:34So the reason we get disciple is because discipleship matures us
- 43:40and the discipleship equips you for what God has for your life.
- 43:44Amen. You know, becoming a follower of
- 43:47Jesus wasn't the end of our new life.
- 43:50It was the beginning of becoming new creations.
- 43:54You received that today, Church.
