Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: Can Saquon Barkley Bounce Back? Can Will Shipley Play Bigger Role In Year 3?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up, everybody. It's Jeff
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mosher and Adam Kapam. We're continuing a podcast series that
- 0:19Speaker 1: started really with looking at the depth Chart, and we
- 0:23Speaker 1: did quarterbacks in our first episode and we're gonna move
- 0:26Speaker 1: on to running backs as we go through offense then defense. Now,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the big point we were making in the quarterback episode, Adam,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and if anybody hasn't listened to it, check it out.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Really good intel. There is the sort of unusual nature
- 0:40Speaker 1: of having a fifteen year number three quarterback and then
- 0:44Speaker 1: a backup quarterback number two who's on his rookie deal.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And we kind of talked about that juxtaposition there between
- 0:51Speaker 1: McKee and Andy Dalton. Here in this situation with running backs,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the hierarchy makes a lot more sense. I do wonder
- 1:01Speaker 1: about potential movement as this season goes on. Really, you know,
- 1:04Speaker 1: we know Saquon Barkley's number one. You got Tank Biggs,
- 1:07Speaker 1: a really good backup who will talk about because I
- 1:09Speaker 1: think there's an opportunity to use him more if they
- 1:12Speaker 1: want to. But also as a number three guy, Adam
- 1:15Speaker 1: will Shipley is someone I don't want to say he
- 1:18Speaker 1: took a step back last year, but numerically he actually did.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And I still think that there's more potential for him
- 1:25Speaker 1: and maybe this offense can unlock it, but I think
- 1:28Speaker 1: last year would have been nicer to see a little
- 1:31Speaker 1: bit more of that diverse skill set that he has
- 1:35Speaker 1: in the offense.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and contracts matter, and I want to get into
- 1:41Speaker 2: kind of not only the depth chart, which is certainly important,
- 1:43Speaker 2: but contracts always give you a clue, and also trades
- 1:49Speaker 2: and if you trade it for a guy tank Bigsby
- 1:51Speaker 2: last year got off to a very bad start. We
- 1:53Speaker 2: told people he wasn't here just to do kickoff returns.
- 1:55Speaker 2: That's nonsense. They're not giving up two draft picks. People
- 1:58Speaker 2: buy anything that's out there something. I kind of laugh. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 2: we said, yeah, folks, that's minor compared to the bigger role.
- 2:05Speaker 2: How he got two years they wanted two years. They
- 2:08Speaker 2: won a guy on two year with two years left
- 2:10Speaker 2: on his deal, which he did. This is the funny
- 2:12Speaker 2: of his deal. And yeah, he got more or less
- 2:16Speaker 2: benched in Jacksonville. Like they promped him up to a
- 2:20Speaker 2: role that maybe he wasn't ready for it. He was
- 2:22Speaker 2: sharing the starting role two years ago with et Travis,
- 2:25Speaker 2: ETN and he didn't work. He was just he They
- 2:27Speaker 2: found out he's better in a complimenting role, which is
- 2:30Speaker 2: what he had here. Once he got it and they
- 2:32Speaker 2: got it correct with him, he was terrific. Bixby look awesome.
- 2:35Speaker 2: It's a change up, and a change up is a
- 2:39Speaker 2: different contrasting style to the starter. That's exactly what it is.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It's exactly what they were hoping he would look like
- 2:45Speaker 2: he did. Yeah, and you brought up Shipley. Shipley is
- 2:49Speaker 2: a straight ahead, got a little bit of juice. He's
- 2:53Speaker 2: a little bit faster then Tank Bigsby from pure football speed,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but makes me he's a better football player. Now, the
- 3:02Speaker 2: question is, with a new scheme and a new coach
- 3:05Speaker 2: and everything got to do with this offense, who's going
- 3:09Speaker 2: to be the third down back? We know Barkley's gonna
- 3:11Speaker 2: have to see some because of his contract. You're not
- 3:15Speaker 2: paying Saquon Barklay this season, and by the way, he
- 3:18Speaker 2: signed for twenty eight.
- 3:21Speaker 1: That was the first question I wanted to ask you,
- 3:22Speaker 1: because you.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Mentioned I'm just morn I thought, go ahead, what do
- 3:25Speaker 2: you think?
- 3:26Speaker 1: So let's go back to the original part of this.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Right after his unbelievable twenty twenty four season, his record
- 3:34Speaker 1: breaking one the Eagles. I don't want to say they
- 3:37Speaker 1: restructured the contract. They just guaranteed more money. That is
- 3:40Speaker 1: that how you would say it is in future years
- 3:43Speaker 1: to make sure that he was commensurate because they basically
- 3:46Speaker 1: got him on a deal in free agency after that
- 3:49Speaker 1: kind of a year. So they what they guarante guaranteed
- 3:52Speaker 1: more money.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, they guaranteed more money, and it's really this is
- 3:56Speaker 2: the last year. And this is important to understand. This
- 3:58Speaker 2: is where we're going with this because you always have
- 4:01Speaker 2: to look at it as clubs do they look at
- 4:03Speaker 2: two or three years down the line. Well, sae Quan
- 4:06Speaker 2: is signed through twenty eight. He is now twenty nine
- 4:11Speaker 2: years old. Running backs in the thirties, you don't want
- 4:16Speaker 2: to be in that business more often like you, you
- 4:18Speaker 2: definitely don't want to be in that business when they're
- 4:20Speaker 2: the thirties. It's very rare. You know, the Eagles have
- 4:25Speaker 2: been through it. They typically and then you Joe Batter
- 4:31Speaker 2: didn't totally agree with this when we had him on
- 4:32Speaker 2: a show many we've had him on a bunch of times,
- 4:34Speaker 2: but he said, yes, they they looked at age per position,
- 4:40Speaker 2: and you know, they make a decision to get move
- 4:42Speaker 2: on from guys more often not. They missed on beat
- 4:45Speaker 2: off on that one. But that's a different story. But
- 4:47Speaker 2: running back, man, you talk to the clubs around the league.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You worry about the knees. You're worried about the wear
- 4:52Speaker 2: and tear. They don't have had an ACL injury. He's
- 4:55Speaker 2: had hi ankle injuries. Right now, after the season, he's
- 4:59Speaker 2: making sixteen point seventy five million. Okay, it's all guaranteed
- 5:04Speaker 2: after the season. Very small guarantee in twenty seven, not
- 5:08Speaker 2: enough to keep on the roster if he doesn't play well. Right,
- 5:10Speaker 2: the total cash is sixteen million, like only like maybe
- 5:14Speaker 2: two millions fully guaranteed. If that so to me, they
- 5:19Speaker 2: may be moving on. Look, he's got it, like he's
- 5:21Speaker 2: got to play well. You just don't hand guy's money.
- 5:24Speaker 2: This is not the way it works. He's making sixteen
- 5:26Speaker 2: million and twenty seven.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yep, Yeah, running back.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Who's the running back after the season.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It's good. It's a really good point. And that's why
- 5:36Speaker 1: I brought up Bill Shipley, and I don't think he's
- 5:38Speaker 1: definitely not number one, But my point is I would
- 5:40Speaker 1: like to see a little bit more of his uses
- 5:43Speaker 1: this year to see if he can be a really
- 5:45Speaker 1: good change of pace number two back in an offense
- 5:48Speaker 1: that's gonna throw the ball a little bit to the
- 5:50Speaker 1: running back, run outside zone and use some of his
- 5:53Speaker 1: speed to the edge. To me, that's to be interesting because,
- 5:56Speaker 1: as you mentioned, big Bigsby is a better runner with
- 5:59Speaker 1: the football right now than Shipley. He's a more decisive runner.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He hits the hole very hard, he breaks contact really well.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The guy averaged six yards to carry last year for
- 6:10Speaker 1: the Eagles. Now I get it, he didn't carry the
- 6:12Speaker 1: ball three hundred times, but it wasn't like he only
- 6:14Speaker 1: carried the ball ten times either. So it was pretty
- 6:17Speaker 1: pretty interesting what he was able to do last year.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And I know you and I at times last year
- 6:22Speaker 1: were saying, man, it's okay to give the ball to
- 6:25Speaker 1: Shipley one or four more times. Again, they were just
- 6:29Speaker 1: trying so hard to get the run game going, get
- 6:32Speaker 1: Barkley going, and it felt like they were stuck in
- 6:34Speaker 1: the mud. But then you know, they give the ball
- 6:36Speaker 1: to Bigsby once or twice at him, and he would
- 6:39Speaker 1: rip off a.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Pretty good incredible because he the Niners got him in
- 6:43Speaker 2: the playoff game. But other than that, he seemed to
- 6:46Speaker 2: note find some haul like the D gap like he
- 6:51Speaker 2: was like it was always going wide and making it
- 6:53Speaker 2: So why we bring this up a the future is
- 6:56Speaker 2: the way the clubs look at it. It was like,
- 6:59Speaker 2: what's our roster look over the next three years? And
- 7:02Speaker 2: now is was Barkley's drop off last season just because
- 7:05Speaker 2: the offensive line couldn't block anyone for the run. For
- 7:07Speaker 2: the most part, it was terrible. Path blocking was pretty good,
- 7:10Speaker 2: but run blocking was bad. Kwon was a step.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I think it's a fair question. I think it's fair
- 7:16Speaker 1: to wonder why Bigsby even though again it's far fewer carries,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but still fifty eight carries is not necessarily a small
- 7:22Speaker 1: sample size either. On fifty eight carries he averaged five
- 7:26Speaker 1: point nine yards per carry. Was that because defenses didn't
- 7:29Speaker 1: think he get the ball there? There's so many different
- 7:31Speaker 1: factors that into it, I do think, and I know
- 7:34Speaker 1: Greg Cosell talked about this and breakdowns. Barkley is a
- 7:38Speaker 1: really good running back as that extra gear and he's
- 7:40Speaker 1: big and he's strong, but when the hole isn't there,
- 7:43Speaker 1: initially he does do that side to side lateral movement
- 7:48Speaker 1: and then sometimes he's able to spin he'll do like
- 7:52Speaker 1: hitting the b on the controller in a video game
- 7:54Speaker 1: and sin or a hurdle and break through. But last
- 7:56Speaker 1: year that did it just didn't work. They didn't have
- 7:59Speaker 1: the same kind of block, They didn't have the same type
- 8:01Speaker 1: of openings where he could spin out of away from
- 8:03Speaker 1: one tackle and into a wide lane elsewhere they're just
- 8:08Speaker 1: worn enough. And as we brought up many times at him,
- 8:10Speaker 1: he led the NFL in yards before or getting hit
- 8:16Speaker 1: before contact. Right, he was constantly getting hit at or
- 8:20Speaker 1: behind the line of scrimmage, which was two years ago
- 8:24Speaker 1: different from two years ago.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Two years ago, was it was was it I don't
- 8:29Speaker 2: have in front? Was it three yards before contact? Something crazy?
- 8:32Speaker 1: More than that, it was something crazy.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So and then also the second half thing where his
- 8:36Speaker 1: second half stats were like fourth in the NFL and
- 8:38Speaker 1: rush oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 2: He stat he basically had a great running back season
- 8:46Speaker 2: the seven half of games two years ago in twenty four. Huh.
- 8:50Speaker 2: But I just think we have to be honest. There's
- 8:52Speaker 2: a certain point when players don't look the same at
- 8:55Speaker 2: that position, and you never went to wait till it's
- 8:59Speaker 2: too late. And we should note because we're doing depth
- 9:01Speaker 2: charts here also, Uh, the only back that they really
- 9:06Speaker 2: added was Damian Pierce, who's career after a really good
- 9:10Speaker 2: rookie season is no die nose dived. And Carson Steele
- 9:13Speaker 2: is also in the roster. They're gonna have a numbers
- 9:16Speaker 2: problem now. They they You should know, folks, that they
- 9:18Speaker 2: guaranteed a little bit of money with Pierce. They won't
- 9:21Speaker 2: keep them with the roster. They guaranteed, Uh, he's gonna
- 9:24Speaker 2: make one point three million. They guaranteed two one fifty thousand,
- 9:28Speaker 2: which is basically going to be a veteran practice squad.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Uh guarantee if they want to, if he if they
- 9:33Speaker 2: like him to go to the practice squad like him enough.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You also, it's a fifty thousand roster bonus if he's
- 9:38Speaker 2: on the game day roster. Right unless for him to
- 9:42Speaker 2: be on the roster of the season, he's gotta have an
- 9:44Speaker 2: unbelievable training camp and by well class you need injuries.
- 9:50Speaker 2: It's just it's stacked against them.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's it's there's no reason, there's no need when when
- 9:55Speaker 1: they have eleven offensive linemen they want to keep, when
- 9:57Speaker 1: they have all these tight ends that they min lead,
- 9:59Speaker 1: they may have to keep four quarterbacks as well. No,
- 10:02Speaker 1: they will keep four quarterback and barring a trade of
- 10:04Speaker 1: Tanner McKee, they're gonna go into this season with four quarterbacks.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You cannot keep four running backs, especially if that fourth
- 10:11Speaker 1: guy is your Worshod Penny slash aj Dillon collecting. You
- 10:16Speaker 1: have to bring him up because it's ridiculous that twice
- 10:19Speaker 1: in the last three years they've kept the guy in
- 10:21Speaker 1: the roster to collect dust. So you can't do it
- 10:25Speaker 1: this year. They can't. There's no reason you got three
- 10:27Speaker 1: pretty capable running backs. There's no reason to keep a
- 10:29Speaker 1: fourth just to say you have four.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I hear you the were shot Penny one. That was
- 10:35Speaker 2: one because I remember we were screaming in twenty three,
- 10:38Speaker 2: why the hell won't they play them? We should know
- 10:40Speaker 2: better because he couldn't play anymore, you know. That's but
- 10:44Speaker 2: that's my point that he was not thirty, but that
- 10:48Speaker 2: position man. So not that you can't address every issue
- 10:51Speaker 2: in one offseason, we understand that. But it's something, folks,
- 10:56Speaker 2: that the Eagles have to look at after the season,
- 10:59Speaker 2: that running back position, whether it's bringing if Bigsby doesn't
- 11:01Speaker 2: find a starting job, if he does well this year
- 11:05Speaker 2: and he can't find a starting job. Don't bring it
- 11:08Speaker 2: back for two or three million for twenty twenty seven. Okay,
- 11:13Speaker 2: because Barkley, Now you worry at twenty nine years old,
- 11:18Speaker 2: and I think he turns thirty? When does he turn thirty?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I believe in February? Is it? Yep, he turns. He
- 11:23Speaker 2: turns thirty? Wow in right around Super Bowl. So be careful.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I'm a little I guess I can, I'll I might
- 11:32Speaker 1: wind up eating my words on this. I'm a little
- 11:34Speaker 1: less concerned about sa Quon sort of losing everything the
- 11:37Speaker 1: way some running backs do because he's a pretty big,
- 11:40Speaker 1: strong and fit like Derreck Henry. Is a guy who's
- 11:43Speaker 1: he's not, you know, like he's Dereck Henry. He's huge,
- 11:46Speaker 1: he's gonna he's a good runner. He's thirty, right, He's
- 11:48Speaker 1: got to be at least at thirty or approaching thirty.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And if he loses a step, it doesn't matter because
- 11:54Speaker 1: he's just such a bulldozer.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna disagree with the Titans because I remember
- 12:00Speaker 2: talking to someone closest situation. They absolutely thought he lost
- 12:02Speaker 2: a step, but not three steps. And by the way,
- 12:05Speaker 2: he turns thirty two. Derrick Henry, Well, I think he's
- 12:09Speaker 2: been pretty good. Well they were, but he's also an anomaly.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You don't see guys correct. He's a very unique running style. Yeah,
- 12:16Speaker 2: he has great straight, straight line speed. He just defied logic. Yeah,
- 12:20Speaker 2: he's gonna be a Hall of Famer. He's a great player.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Would you would you call him maybe? I mean McCaffrey
- 12:25Speaker 1: is twenty nine. I think he'll be thirty pretty soon. Actually,
- 12:28Speaker 1: he's born in June twenty seventeen.
- 12:30Speaker 2: We were at the draft going.
- 12:31Speaker 1: He had a great year last year at twenty nine he.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Was and by the way, two years ago there were
- 12:37Speaker 2: whispers is this guy done?
- 12:39Speaker 1: He turned injuries.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he turns thirty next month. Judith, he's born in
- 12:45Speaker 2: June and ninety six. So, but again that's there. There
- 12:50Speaker 2: are not a lot of examples when guys hit thirty.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I know it's it's less about the age. It's more
- 12:57Speaker 2: about the wear and tear and injury history. M they
- 13:01Speaker 2: take a meeting in age. Whi's not always accurate, Yep,
- 13:04Speaker 2: I know that I know the Vikings. I have to
- 13:07Speaker 2: ask for Rex feeling this, but I remember hearing from
- 13:10Speaker 2: the grapevine that the Vikings did its study going back
- 13:13Speaker 2: to decades about when guys wear down. I think it
- 13:16Speaker 2: was the Vikings, so I know there was one team
- 13:18Speaker 2: that told me about this is when safety's regrets. This
- 13:22Speaker 2: is when corners regress because you could, you have the data,
- 13:25Speaker 2: but I also have to know about injuries. So Taiquan, Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 2: we asked Greg this. I know our patron members asked
- 13:32Speaker 2: Greg this. They thought he wasn't quite as sharp, but
- 13:35Speaker 2: he didn't have a drop off at all. It wasn't like, oh, God,
- 13:38Speaker 2: on your point, I hear you on that. Yeah, but
- 13:41Speaker 2: I'm I worry about that. I worry about it when
- 13:45Speaker 2: guys it comes sometimes comes out of nowhere.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Plus, honestly, for a guy who has a
- 13:52Speaker 1: long list of injuries with the Giants, he has been
- 13:55Speaker 1: nothing but healthy, A little me thing here or there, right,
- 13:58Speaker 1: nothing but healthy with the Eagles for two straight years.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And you know you gotta cross your fingers as that continues,
- 14:05Speaker 1: especially after last year where he took so many more
- 14:08Speaker 1: hits so so much sooner than he did in twenty
- 14:11Speaker 1: twenty four. So that's why it's really imperative that the
- 14:13Speaker 1: Eagles are better upfront with their offensive line this year
- 14:17Speaker 1: for all of the running backs, but especially for saquon.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yep, so it right now, the expectation is is that
- 14:25Speaker 2: Bigsby will be the two we'll see about third down?
- 14:29Speaker 2: Is it all Barkley? Is it mostly Barkley? Or is
- 14:32Speaker 2: it fifty fift the Shipley? On your question and your point, Shipley,
- 14:37Speaker 2: who this will be your three for him? He was
- 14:40Speaker 2: fourth round twenty four. Will they finally get a shot
- 14:44Speaker 2: to be a quasi third down back? Not the guy
- 14:48Speaker 2: on every third down? It's not gonna happen with what
- 14:50Speaker 2: they're paying Barkley. But can he have a chance to
- 14:53Speaker 2: do what we saw in training camp. He's got good hands,
- 14:56Speaker 2: he's explosive. Lower body is not as big as you'd like.
- 14:59Speaker 2: He's not. It's strong, but he's got juice and he
- 15:02Speaker 2: can catch the ball. That's why they drafted him to
- 15:05Speaker 2: be to add something on third down. They haven't really
- 15:07Speaker 2: done it.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Yeah, do you know that? You know that this is
- 15:10Speaker 1: an amazing stat on Shipley. He had more yards on
- 15:14Speaker 1: one carry in the playoffs two years ago than he
- 15:16Speaker 1: did all of last year combined.
- 15:18Speaker 2: That's are you serious? That's insane.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Do you remember he had that seventy seven yard run.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I think it was the same he had seventy seven
- 15:25Speaker 1: yards in the playoffs in twenty twenty four. I know
- 15:28Speaker 1: he had like a fiftyeth sorry he had a fifty
- 15:30Speaker 1: seven yard run, but he had seventy seven total yards
- 15:33Speaker 1: in the playoffs. Last year he had forty nine total
- 15:37Speaker 1: rushing yards in the regular season on fourteen carries. Now,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I'm disappointed by that. I I for the coaches and
- 15:43Speaker 1: for him. He's not really making more out of that
- 15:46Speaker 1: those opportunities. And they only watched. By the way, he
- 15:49Speaker 1: got it nine times. He only had nine catches, so
- 15:52Speaker 1: twenty three touches all year long. Down the finishing.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Said it earlier, and I'll put a stamp on it,
- 15:59Speaker 2: is that they were so bad last year running the football.
- 16:02Speaker 2: You couldn't try Shipley. That's bad coaching, like you got you.
- 16:08Speaker 2: This is my I've said this before, and you know
- 16:10Speaker 2: I've gone to the other side on this. But when
- 16:16Speaker 2: before you were probably covering the team when they were
- 16:18Speaker 2: so pass happy with it. B Wes came on the show,
- 16:20Speaker 2: but we talked about it. M hm. You knew when
- 16:23Speaker 2: you were drafted by the Eagles, they're gonna throw the
- 16:25Speaker 2: They're gonna throw the ball, and the backstern catch the football, right,
- 16:28Speaker 2: so you kind of knew what to expect. Like I
- 16:31Speaker 2: didn't understand it. I just didn't understand why why are
- 16:34Speaker 2: you throwing the ball so much? Run the damn football, right?
- 16:37Speaker 2: I didn't understand if the more you throw it, the
- 16:39Speaker 2: better chance you have to win, particularly in the first
- 16:41Speaker 2: it's really in the first half of games. The data
- 16:43Speaker 2: shows you that.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Oh there's been a little bit of a shift lately
- 16:46Speaker 2: not running the football, but but the data, the data
- 16:49Speaker 2: shows you if you throw it more than you run
- 16:50Speaker 2: it in the first half, you're probably gonna win. Yep.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But I'm thinking last year on the point they're behind,
- 16:57Speaker 2: they're not scoring, is what is Shipley do not to
- 17:00Speaker 2: get the football right?
- 17:02Speaker 1: I just.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Coaching was just not good last year. This is it
- 17:06Speaker 2: wasn't as bad as twenty three. I'm talking about the offense.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It was bad. Oc was fired and wasn't just he
- 17:13Speaker 2: was fired. It was just it didn't It was it
- 17:16Speaker 2: was an S show, you know, Yeah, we know what
- 17:18Speaker 2: happened on defense was even bigger S show. It was bad.
- 17:22Speaker 2: But I'm look, Sean mannion Ba's catching the ball in
- 17:26Speaker 2: the West Coast offense. I know that they're not all
- 17:27Speaker 2: the same, but they all meet in the middle, which
- 17:30Speaker 2: shannahan a McVeagh offense. They catch the football U and
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm telling you, if we see it, we're calling it out.
- 17:37Speaker 2: If they're catching, like we said in twenty three when
- 17:39Speaker 2: Swift was catching the football, are crazy in training camp
- 17:41Speaker 2: and they never throw it to him in the regular season.
- 17:44Speaker 2: If it's happening and not in the regular season. This year,
- 17:46Speaker 2: we're calling everybody out because I'm come on.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Man, this yes anyway, Hey, Philly fans. Game day is
- 17:53Speaker 1: stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines, We've all been there,

- 18:48Speaker 1: experience made for Philly fans. Twenty one and up all right,
- 18:51Speaker 1: True or false onended on this true or false. The
- 18:54Speaker 1: starting running back for the Eagles in twenty twenty seven
- 18:57Speaker 1: is on the roster right now.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I'm gonna say it is Barkley. Uh.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I would lean that way.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Also, Look, if he has a bad year and they
- 19:08Speaker 2: want to keep him, they could always say to his agent, listen.
- 19:13Speaker 1: We can't go there.
- 19:14Speaker 2: You know, he got to take a pay cut, you know.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we will call that the Josh sweat slash
- 19:21Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard route where you know.
- 19:24Speaker 2: They hey, you know what, I'm not sure they weren't
- 19:26Speaker 2: happy with it, and Sweaty had a good year, came back,
- 19:31Speaker 2: had a good year and had a huge year with
- 19:33Speaker 2: it with the with the Cardinals. For the life of me,
- 19:36Speaker 2: I don't know why Goddard didn't get more money from Eagles.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Seven million full of guaranteed now, I don't know who else.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I don't know what the market was for him this
- 19:44Speaker 2: this time around, we.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Knew it was a better agree that the market was.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I know it's better last year because I know they were.
- 19:49Speaker 2: There were, as I understood then, three or four teams involved.
- 19:52Speaker 2: But he really wanted to be an Eagle. That's another
- 19:55Speaker 2: thing which we we have to give players credit for
- 19:59Speaker 2: is that whatever market it is, guys take in lesson
- 20:02Speaker 2: market because they want to stay. Yeah, you just hate
- 20:04Speaker 2: it because it doesn't make them look great. But it's
- 20:05Speaker 2: not their fault. It's the correct the player wants to stay.
- 20:08Speaker 2: The player wants to stay.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, NFLPA doesn't like that much either, although for one
- 20:12Speaker 1: year veteran for one year deals, they don't really care
- 20:14Speaker 1: as much. But yeah, they don't really love it when
- 20:16Speaker 1: a guy takes a little bit undervalue.
- 20:18Speaker 2: That's true, but it's it's just to move this along
- 20:21Speaker 2: here and end it after the season. They got some
- 20:23Speaker 2: big decisions to make it.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Running back, for sure, sure, I like what they've got.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I think we both think that they're well, they've got
- 20:31Speaker 1: an elite when healthy back in Barkley. They've got a
- 20:33Speaker 1: really nice kind of battering ram short yardage if need
- 20:36Speaker 1: be guy, goal line guy. You want to take Barkley
- 20:38Speaker 1: out a little bit, you want to put Bigsby in there,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and you know, still get the hard yards. You got that.
- 20:42Speaker 1: And again theoretically, if you want the real quote change
- 20:46Speaker 1: up where you throw it to a guy or a
- 20:48Speaker 1: little bit of a juicier back, you have Shipley. They
- 20:51Speaker 1: just got to figure out a way to use these guys.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And I think that really starts with getting this offense
- 20:56Speaker 1: on track and ready to go from the get go.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I think some of what we're talking about also goes
- 21:00Speaker 1: back to a the offensive line not being healthy and
- 21:03Speaker 1: b the offense constantly last year, how many times did
- 21:06Speaker 1: we talk about behind the sticks? Second and long, third
- 21:10Speaker 1: and long? To be fair, there really wasn't a great
- 21:13Speaker 1: opportunity to get these guys more involved because they they
- 21:16Speaker 1: were constantly having to throw the ball because they were
- 21:18Speaker 1: behind the sticks.
- 21:19Speaker 2: So I'll tell you what now, you brought that up
- 21:22Speaker 2: before we get out here, I do want to mention
- 21:24Speaker 2: like that's something we'll be looking for it and we'll
- 21:26Speaker 2: get Andrew on too. I know it's not always easy
- 21:29Speaker 2: to tell, but I want to see how the offensive
- 21:32Speaker 2: linemen are moving in training camp, I usually don't look
- 21:34Speaker 2: at that. In fact, I don't think I have in
- 21:36Speaker 2: a camp I go to. But I'm sure as hell
- 21:38Speaker 2: looking at it. I mean, did we miss something last summer?
- 21:42Speaker 2: Maybe I didn't. I wasn't looking for it. But my god,
- 21:45Speaker 2: they were so bad run blocking. I've never seen anything
- 21:47Speaker 2: like it in this market my career. I'm a like you,
- 21:50Speaker 2: but I haven't seen it. This was so bad run blocking.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Jurgens couldn't. Unfortunately, we understand. He was hurt. Diderson was hurt.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Lane hurt. You're playing backups. You get backup results in
- 22:04Speaker 2: certain ways. But that's something we're gonna have to look
- 22:07Speaker 2: at training camp because this can't go on again, right,
- 22:09Speaker 2: there's really not. It's unfair or Saquon. If the guys
- 22:12Speaker 2: can't if Saquon's healthy, well ask Greg when we do
- 22:15Speaker 2: the inside of the Tape show, Hey, hows Saquon running?
- 22:17Speaker 2: Is you gona where he's supposed to? The hole's not
- 22:18Speaker 2: opening up. We're mostly not opening up last year, right, Look,
- 22:22Speaker 2: good luck?
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck being a first year coordinator. If you're
- 22:25Speaker 1: trying to call plays when you're in second and nine
- 22:27Speaker 1: and third and six.
- 22:28Speaker 2: All understand, But that's what it is what it is.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Yeah, know that about it, all right. So that was
- 22:32Speaker 1: a good comprehensive look at the depth chart for the
- 22:37Speaker 1: running backs, and we'll go with another offensive position in
- 22:40Speaker 1: our next episode. That's gonna do it for this edition
- 22:43Speaker 1: of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast in Eagles Intel,
