- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to Jag-Zam. I'm Kynani Stevens, Brian Sexton, John Ogier
- 0:19Speaker 1: with me today for this midweek episode as the Jaguars
- 0:22Speaker 1: are getting prepared for their week two matchup against the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Denver Broncos. Let's go over some of our big things
- 0:27Speaker 1: today brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Big thing number one is late night prep. They're taking
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the Broncos in Denver, but the Broncos were playing
- 0:36Speaker 1: on Monday night football against the Chiefs in Kansas City.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So earlier this week, Liam Cohen said it would be
- 0:42Speaker 1: a late night for him and some of the coaching staff.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Obviously, I have a lot of work to get done
- 0:46Speaker 2: from now until the game is actually played tonight. So
- 0:49Speaker 2: the coaches are extremely busy looking at, obviously, Denver post
- 0:54Speaker 2: when we played them and sort of how they looked.
- 0:57Speaker 2: We can look at the preseason a little bit because, obviously,
- 1:00Speaker 2: they have a new coordinator, Collin Plays, and what his
- 1:04Speaker 2: flow looked like and some of the rhythm and ways
- 1:06Speaker 2: that he called the game.
- 1:08Speaker 3: We can look at those.
- 1:09Speaker 2: But, yeah, we've got to wait a little bit to
- 1:10Speaker 2: see what they truly look like.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Brian, I'm sure coaching staff watched last year's film as well,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but after Monday Night Football, it might be a little
- 1:17Speaker 1: bit confusing considering what that performance looked like from the
- 1:20Speaker 1: Broncos against the Chiefs.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Without a doubt, and I had somebody say to me
- 1:24Speaker 4: in passing earlier today, I wonder how long it will
- 1:27Speaker 4: be until Sean Payton reclaims the reins. And listen, after
- 1:30Speaker 4: the game in Kansas City in the early morning hours
- 1:32Speaker 4: this morning.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Sean Payton defended.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Davis Webb and said he would be evaluated like any player.
- 1:38Speaker 4: So he was playing the standard line, but don't be
- 1:41Speaker 4: surprised if he's not even more involved in that process,
- 1:45Speaker 4: which kind of changes what the Jaguars saw and the tendencies.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And the rhythm that you heard from the coach.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Listen, the Broncos are a good football team, and they
- 1:54Speaker 4: had a tough night in Kansas City. They're going to
- 1:57Speaker 4: be wound up to come back and play at mile high, where, John,
- 2:02Speaker 4: they have been embarrassed twice in the last five regular
- 2:04Speaker 4: season games, once by the Jaguars in week 16 of
- 2:07Speaker 4: last year, and then once last night against Kansas City.
- 2:10Speaker 4: My guess is Sean Payton will have that team wound
- 2:12Speaker 4: up and ready to go.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's going to be a theme this week.
- 2:16Speaker 5: People are going to say, well, the Broncos are going
- 2:17Speaker 5: to be ready because of what happened on Monday night.
- 2:21Speaker 5: As you guys know, after what happened last season, the
- 2:26Speaker 5: Broncos were going to be ready for this game either way.
- 2:28Speaker 5: So I don't necessarily think that, oh, the danger. The
- 2:31Speaker 5: Broncos win, everybody say, well, they didn't want to go
- 2:33Speaker 5: to 0-2. Well, nobody wants to go to 0-2. This
- 2:36Speaker 5: was going to be a knockdown, drag out, full attention
- 2:39Speaker 5: game from the Broncos no matter what happened Monday. It'll
- 2:43Speaker 5: be that way, and it's going to be the first
- 2:46Speaker 5: road test for the Jaguars this season.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Our second big thing, we're talking about that matchup last
- 2:52Speaker 1: season with a huge marquee win for the team, so
- 2:55Speaker 1: motivation going into Week 2.
- 2:57Speaker 5: There will be.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Something I'm sure Lee and Cohen will latch onto to
- 3:00Speaker 1: motivate his team, but the importance of the win on
- 3:05Speaker 1: the road last year. I think it can still have
- 3:07Speaker 1: that effect this year, but will he be able to
- 3:11Speaker 1: get everybody focused and not overlooking this during a tough
- 3:14Speaker 1: stretch time, John?
- 3:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been around Liam for 20 games, whatever the
- 3:20Speaker 5: number is now. I haven't ever gotten a sense that
- 3:25Speaker 5: this team hasn't been motivated. I thought he said it
- 3:28Speaker 5: best after the game Sunday that he does not He
- 3:31Speaker 5: puts his head on the pillow on a Saturday night,
- 3:33Speaker 5: very sure what Jaguars team is going to show up
- 3:37Speaker 5: the next day. That, to me, spoke a lot of
- 3:40Speaker 5: the bond between coach and team. They're going to be
- 3:44Speaker 5: motivated because they always are. But I do think the
- 3:47Speaker 5: message that we just talked about a second ago, Kai,
- 3:51Speaker 5: they know that the Broncos became fully aware of the
- 3:55Speaker 5: Jaguars last December, what they could do. That game was
- 3:58Speaker 5: not close in the second half. The Broncos know that
- 4:01Speaker 5: this is a big game, a marquee AFC game, Brian.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Even if other... People around the nation don't yet see
- 4:09Speaker 5: it that way.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Well, and listen, if you're looking for an edge, how
- 4:11Speaker 4: about the fact that the Patriots and Steelers are the
- 4:13Speaker 4: 1 o'clock primetime game? That's the only other matchup between
- 4:16Speaker 4: two playoff teams for last year. And the Jaguars at
- 4:19Speaker 4: 4.05 aren't the afternoon nationwide broadcast. That's the 0-1 Commanders
- 4:24Speaker 4: versus the 0-1 Dallas Cowboys. There's a little bit of
- 4:27Speaker 4: a grindstone that you can sharpen the edge against. Listen,
- 4:30Speaker 4: the thing that I like most about Liam is he
- 4:33Speaker 4: says it's always about us. It's always about us doing
- 4:37Speaker 4: what we do. So while this team likes to have
- 4:39Speaker 4: an edge going into games, Kai, they don't need it.
- 4:42Speaker 4: They don't necessarily need extra motivation because they want to
- 4:46Speaker 4: go out and prove to everyone.
- 4:49Speaker 3: That they are good.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Not that they can go and win in Denver and
- 4:53Speaker 4: beat a good Broncos team, but that they're good, which
- 4:56Speaker 4: means they have to focus on playing their style of football, right?
- 4:59Speaker 4: That's what we've heard all August is about our play style.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I think this team is ready to go play good football,
- 5:05Speaker 4: whether it's in Denver or whether you're talking about Cincinnati
- 5:08Speaker 4: in a couple of weeks or against the Texans in London.
- 5:10Speaker 4: This team wants to play for itself.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Absolutely. Our final big thing today is that tough stretch
- 5:15Speaker 1: because Denver on the road is two of three on
- 5:18Speaker 1: the road. Then the team goes to play two in London. Brian,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I know we've talked about the schedule ad nauseum, but.
- 5:23Speaker 1: This is really the stretch we had kind of honed
- 5:25Speaker 1: in on where they need to make as much ground
- 5:27Speaker 1: as they can.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Time to prove it.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Everyone's talking about the Jaguars with an asterisk on a
- 5:30Speaker 4: national level right now.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yes, they look great. Yes, the quarterback threw four touchdowns.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Yes, they had five sacks and got two takeaways, but
- 5:37Speaker 4: it was against the Browns.
- 5:38Speaker 3: It's the Browns. They're not very good.
- 5:40Speaker 4: It's Deshaun Watson, the quarterback who has been on the
- 5:43Speaker 4: shelf since 2024. Before that was out of football in 2021.
- 5:47Speaker 3: You know what?
- 5:48Speaker 4: Here's your opportunity. You went and did it last year.
- 5:50Speaker 4: You went 4-0 against the AFC West. You were 4-0
- 5:54Speaker 4: in games played out West last year. Go prove it.
- 5:57Speaker 4: And this is a really good football team, and they
- 6:00Speaker 4: are well coached, and they know what it takes to win.
- 6:03Speaker 4: So now just handle what you can handle, the preparation,
- 6:07Speaker 4: the travel, the preparation on game day, and go play
- 6:10Speaker 4: your best football.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It'll shut everybody up.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been so long. since this team had a
- 6:18Speaker 5: sustained run. I'm not going to say a success, but
- 6:22Speaker 5: a sustained run of being in these sorts of games
- 6:26Speaker 5: where you're playing against good teams, 4 o'clock starts, you're
- 6:31Speaker 5: playing against the best teams because you're one of the
- 6:32Speaker 5: best teams. So I think everybody, Jaguars fans included, are
- 6:37Speaker 5: still sort of like, hey, hey, look at us, we're here.
- 6:40Speaker 5: It's time to stop that. This is going to be
- 6:43Speaker 5: a good team for a while. Trevor Lawrence is good.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Liam Cohen is one of the better coaches in the league.
- 6:47Speaker 5: They're going to be involved with this because they're going
- 6:49Speaker 5: to contend. These are the sort of games that are
- 6:54Speaker 5: going to be slugfest, knock down, look at the end
- 6:57Speaker 5: of the season. They're going to look back and say,
- 6:59Speaker 5: how did we do in these games because it's affecting
- 7:01Speaker 5: how we fare in the playoffs. I believe that the Jaguars,
- 7:04Speaker 5: you know, you don't win all these games because they're
- 7:08Speaker 5: the games against the best teams. But I think the
- 7:10Speaker 5: Jaguars over time are going to get used to being
- 7:12Speaker 5: the team that walks out with its chest out out
- 7:15Speaker 5: of these games and over the course of the next
- 7:17Speaker 5: four or five seasons because this is what they are now.
- 7:19Speaker 1: This is where they are now, and this is a
- 7:21Speaker 1: great place to be.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Stay with us here on Jags AM.
- 7:23Speaker 1: We're going to talk a little bit this or that
- 7:25Speaker 1: in regards to the week one win over the Browns.
- 7:33Speaker 2: That was an absolute dot for four defenders to trust
- 7:37Speaker 2: Josh in that moment. He had Josh and Jacoby were
- 7:40Speaker 2: kind of the either or there. We scored on that
- 7:43Speaker 2: exact play in the joint practice against Carolina and he
- 7:48Speaker 2: threw it to Jacoby and the safety happened to be
- 7:50Speaker 2: kind of lean in that way. Jacoby didn't have great
- 7:53Speaker 2: leverage on the play and I thought he did a
- 7:56Speaker 2: really nice job coming off the action with his eyes
- 7:59Speaker 2: and then just making the decision right now, no hesitation.
- 8:04Speaker 2: put that ball in only one spot that we can
- 8:07Speaker 2: make the play. And then Josh, obviously being strong hands,
- 8:11Speaker 2: protecting himself away from the safety on the throw. That
- 8:15Speaker 2: was high level football. I mean, that's an NFL, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: open touchdown.
- 8:21Speaker 5: I can watch that throw all day.
- 8:28Speaker 1: That's why I put it back in there.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Cause it's just so, it's.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Every angle you see, you're like, that's crazier and crazier.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And I saw the press box and, You could see
- 8:35Speaker 1: it was a bullet pass, and he was able to
- 8:36Speaker 1: come down with it. But just the guy's diving. It's
- 8:38Speaker 1: very poetic looking. The defender's diving over the top.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, if you slow-mo that, you get one of those
- 8:44Speaker 5: end-of-the-movie scenes, like the end of Remember the Titans or whatever.
- 8:48Speaker 5: It was a great throw.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Great catch, too.
- 8:52Speaker 5: I guess it was his best throw of the day.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I liked the touchdown.
- 8:56Speaker 5: His other three touchdowns were all really good throws, too.
- 8:59Speaker 5: I liked the.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Touchdown to Jacoby running to his left and putting the
- 9:01Speaker 3: ball up in the air.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You know, you talk about a 6'6, right-handed quarterback running
- 9:06Speaker 4: to his left, and he put the ball on the spot.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Although people asked all.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Offseason, is last year's version, you know, the final eight
- 9:13Speaker 4: games of Trevor Lawrence, what we can expect?
- 9:15Speaker 3: He just proved that last Sunday. Yeah, that's who he is.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Absolutely. Let's talk a little bit about that because you
- 9:20Speaker 1: guys have been here longer than I have. So you're
- 9:21Speaker 1: my little Jaguars historians, if you will. Is that the
- 9:24Speaker 1: best home opener you've seen out of the Jags or
- 9:26Speaker 1: season opener?
- 9:26Speaker 3: Second best.
- 9:28Speaker 4: The best was opening day 1999. And listen, when you
- 9:30Speaker 4: talk about best with the Jaguars, you're talking about the
- 9:33Speaker 4: best team.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And that 99 team still is the best team, 14-2.
- 9:37Speaker 4: They beat Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers 41-3.
- 9:42Speaker 4: In fact, Young was out of the game in the
- 9:44Speaker 4: second half. They replaced him with Jeff Garcia. The Jaguars
- 9:48Speaker 4: scored offense, defense, and special teams that day in the rain.
- 9:52Speaker 4: And that was a 38-point margin of victory. So I'll
- 9:56Speaker 4: go with 99 as the best, and that as the
- 9:58Speaker 4: second best.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not sure. The Pittsburgh game in 96, when
- 10:06Speaker 5: they won out here, was a big moment because it
- 10:10Speaker 5: was the statement that the Jaguars were stepping out of expansion.
- 10:16Speaker 5: They had beaten the Steelers the year before, but now
- 10:18Speaker 5: they've done it twice in So that was a memorable game.
- 10:22Speaker 5: But I'm with Brian. The 99 game against San Francisco,
- 10:25Speaker 5: because of the competition, because Steve Young is a better
- 10:28Speaker 5: quarterback than Deshaun Watson, that sort of stands out as
- 10:32Speaker 5: the best.
- 10:33Speaker 4: But to put it in perspective, I think most people
- 10:34Speaker 4: who are watching this would say, hey, what about 2017, right?
- 10:37Speaker 4: Jaguars got 10 sacks in that ball game, and it
- 10:40Speaker 4: beat them 29-7, I think, was the final score. And
- 10:43Speaker 4: that was kind of the standard because the defense was
- 10:45Speaker 4: so dominant. for this to pass that 2017 team in
- 10:49Speaker 4: most people's mind, completely understand.
- 10:51Speaker 5: It was a fun one.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Let's just put it that way. It was a fun
- 10:53Speaker 1: football game to watch, certainly. Then two rookie performances. We
- 10:57Speaker 1: saw Josh Cameron's catch there, but also another rookie having
- 11:00Speaker 1: a great day, Emmanuel Pregnon, because when you're an offensive lineman,
- 11:03Speaker 1: if we don't hear your name, that was a good
- 11:05Speaker 1: day for you. So, John, who had a better day, rookie-wise?
- 11:08Speaker 5: Well, I'll say Pregnon because he played the whole game,
- 11:12Speaker 5: and my understanding is, look, I'm not– a good enough
- 11:15Speaker 5: to watch a guard and see if he had a
- 11:17Speaker 5: great game. Instead of people I've talked to said he's
- 11:20Speaker 5: really good. And, uh, there's a, when you ask about pregnant,
- 11:25Speaker 5: you get a smile because the thought is he's going
- 11:28Speaker 5: to be really, really, really good. And that was for
- 11:32Speaker 5: a rookie guard to come in against a Browns front
- 11:37Speaker 5: that is known for being physical and, uh, still elicit
- 11:41Speaker 5: the same smiles and confidence and, you know, one of
- 11:45Speaker 5: these of, hey, this guy's pretty good. It was impressive.
- 11:51Speaker 5: So a thought on Cameron, who I assume you'll take,
- 11:59Speaker 5: they played young guys and give them an opportunity around here.
- 12:04Speaker 5: I don't think he's on the field for most teams
- 12:06Speaker 5: in the NFL, a six-round rookie receiver, the receivers this
- 12:09Speaker 5: team has. These guys put their money where their mouth
- 12:11Speaker 5: is and give guys opportunities. It's a big core of
- 12:14Speaker 5: this franchise. It's impressive.
- 12:16Speaker 4: And Cameron plays a lot of special teams, but I'm
- 12:18Speaker 4: going with Pregnon because you just turn on the tape
- 12:20Speaker 4: and you don't really have to need to know exactly
- 12:24Speaker 4: what there is for him to do other than moving
- 12:26Speaker 4: people out of the way.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And he moved people out of the way all day long.
- 12:30Speaker 4: I think he's a more critical point, as you talked about,
- 12:33Speaker 4: a sixth-round pick who's not expected to be on the
- 12:35Speaker 4: field in week one. This is a third-round pick that
- 12:37Speaker 4: everyone expected to come in and play well, and he
- 12:40Speaker 4: certainly did.
- 12:40Speaker 3: He moved people in the running game.
- 12:42Speaker 4: The backs in particular between the tackles, 4.85 yards per carry.
- 12:47Speaker 3: And it was him and.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Bork.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Bork?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Is that what they're calling him?
- 12:51Speaker 5: Bork? Let's give another rookie some credit.
- 12:52Speaker 3: People in the football con, Bork.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Nate Borkucher, who played tied for the most with Brenton
- 12:56Speaker 1: at tight end for snaps.
- 12:58Speaker 3: And he played really.
- 12:59Speaker 4: I mean, again, you turn the tape on and you
- 13:01Speaker 4: look for 87. He's moving people all the time. The
- 13:03Speaker 4: casual observers say, we have it. He only caught one pass.
- 13:06Speaker 4: That isn't the sole reason they have him on the field.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Look at the things that Brenton Strange was and will
- 13:12Speaker 4: be able to do because you've got a blocking tight end.
- 13:15Speaker 4: And when you line them up next to each other,
- 13:16Speaker 4: you say, well, who's going out for the pass? Well,
- 13:18Speaker 4: it could be either one. Bork had a big game also.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Final thought on Pregnon. They knew he was going to
- 13:24Speaker 5: dominate the run. Liam praised him in pass pro. That
- 13:29Speaker 5: was the one area where you've got to learn that
- 13:31Speaker 5: a little bit, learn NFL stuff. for him to have
- 13:34Speaker 5: been good in both, um, arrows up.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Credit to the whole line. We didn't hear Jared
- 13:39Speaker 1: versus name much at all. I didn't, he didn't contribute, didn't,
- 13:42Speaker 1: didn't contribute much to the stat sheet. So very good
- 13:44Speaker 1: work from that O-line. Uh, there was some interesting comments made.
- 13:48Speaker 1: We know that Hunter's going to play on both sides
- 13:50Speaker 1: of the ball, but his snap count, this is the
- 13:52Speaker 1: first game we've had only four on offense and then 29,
- 13:55Speaker 1: I think it was on defense. So Is there any
- 13:58Speaker 1: concern with that? I know it would be less on offense.
- 14:00Speaker 1: We didn't see much involved at all, and it was
- 14:02Speaker 1: a little bit less for what you may consider for
- 14:04Speaker 1: a CB1. He is returning from injury.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Yeah, well, they also pulled a lot of guys out
- 14:08Speaker 4: of the ballgame at the end of the third quarter
- 14:10Speaker 4: because the game was well in hand, and they wanted to, A,
- 14:13Speaker 4: get more guys out there for experience. For the obvious reason,
- 14:17Speaker 4: you want to build up your reserves. They didn't need
- 14:19Speaker 4: him as much. I have no concern about how many
- 14:20Speaker 4: snaps he plays on offense. I think he is the
- 14:22Speaker 4: elite cover corner, and if he is just a star
- 14:25Speaker 4: on that side of the ball... especially this week when
- 14:27Speaker 4: you look at the weapons that the Broncos will put
- 14:30Speaker 4: out there. If he's just a cornerback, I'm perfectly fine
- 14:33Speaker 4: with that because an elite-level corner like that is worth
- 14:38Speaker 4: what they paid to go and get him. He'll have
- 14:40Speaker 4: bigger days on offense, but he's 70-30, maybe 80-20 offense
- 14:44Speaker 4: as far as I can see.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Defense.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I'm sorry, defense over offense, yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Look, I haven't asked specifically, so some of what I'm
- 14:51Speaker 5: about to say is theory. I don't know exactly why
- 14:54Speaker 5: they pulled him out of the game, but.
- 14:57Speaker 5: My understanding is he played fine when he was in.
- 15:00Speaker 5: He's going to be a full-time corner, packages on offense.
- 15:03Speaker 5: My guess is you have 17 games. You have to
- 15:08Speaker 5: know that for him, over a 17-game period, you're going
- 15:13Speaker 5: to have X number of defensive plays, but because of
- 15:17Speaker 5: his offensive role, which will be a role in some capacity,
- 15:21Speaker 5: he's going to have more load than other defensive players.
- 15:26Speaker 5: So if you have an opportunity week one to reduce
- 15:28Speaker 5: that load over a 17-game period, in a game that's
- 15:33Speaker 5: out of hand, where the other team is not throwing
- 15:35Speaker 5: the ball well anyway, it would seem logical that that's
- 15:38Speaker 5: a time to ease that load. Remember in running backs,
- 15:42Speaker 5: we talked a lot last year about, hey, let's ease
- 15:43Speaker 5: the load. That would be an opportunity to ease that
- 15:46Speaker 5: load and not have any risk involved with it, I
- 15:49Speaker 5: would think.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I have to imagine this week two matchup will
- 15:52Speaker 1: be a tighter contest and we'll get a more realistic
- 15:55Speaker 1: understanding of what his play time will be. Stay with
- 15:58Speaker 1: us on JAGZAM after the break. We'll talk about what's
- 16:00Speaker 1: been going on around the NFL. Around the NFL brought
- 16:04Speaker 1: to you by Paramount Plus, the streaming home of your
- 16:06Speaker 1: live local NFL on CBS games.
- 16:10Speaker 2: At that point, I felt like points were necessary. You
- 16:14Speaker 2: want to just continue to score points and Would a
- 16:19Speaker 2: part of me want to go for it? Absolutely. But
- 16:21Speaker 2: I felt confident making the decision. I know the offense
- 16:25Speaker 2: wanted to stay on the grass, which I appreciate. But
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think early in the year, just, man, let's go
- 16:31Speaker 2: get some points. We're up 14-0. Let's get Cam involved.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Let's get him going a little bit. And the way
- 16:38Speaker 2: the defense was playing, I felt confident we'd get some
- 16:40Speaker 2: more ops to be able to score some more touchdowns.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It was Liam Cohen talking on Monday about choosing to
- 16:45Speaker 1: kick the field goal rather than maybe go for him
- 16:47Speaker 1: fourth down, and I played it for you, John, because
- 16:49Speaker 1: he finally listened.
- 16:51Speaker 5: No. He's listening.
- 16:52Speaker 1: No.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Look, I got many emails about that. Oh, he finally
- 16:56Speaker 5: decided to do the right thing. Everybody's trying to compare
- 16:59Speaker 5: to the Bills last year. Against the Bills last year,
- 17:01Speaker 5: you were trying to establish dominance in the game, keep
- 17:04Speaker 5: pace in a game you know is going to be
- 17:07Speaker 5: points necessary. The other day, you're playing a team that's
- 17:11Speaker 5: struggling offensively, You have a chance to go up three
- 17:14Speaker 5: scores instead of two. Puts a significant scoreboard change in it.
- 17:19Speaker 5: I don't think, Brian, we're going to see Liam go, oh, well,
- 17:23Speaker 5: I'm kicking a field goal on every fourth and short
- 17:26Speaker 5: now because you people were right.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Listen, he knows more about football than all of us
- 17:31Speaker 4: and everyone who's at home watching this now.
- 17:32Speaker 3: He's an exceedingly smart coach.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Who grew up the son of a coach, played college football,
- 17:38Speaker 4: and has been a coach ever since he left the game.
- 17:41Speaker 1: He knows.
- 17:41Speaker 4: He's just aggressive. And he is going to go for
- 17:43Speaker 4: it when he can. But he was always going to
- 17:46Speaker 4: take the opportunity when it presented. It just didn't present
- 17:49Speaker 4: itself enough last year.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Let's go over some of the news around the NFL.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It was a crazy week one, so we can't get
- 17:54Speaker 1: to all of it, but just some of the things
- 17:56Speaker 1: that will pertain to the Jaguars. First would be the
- 17:59Speaker 1: rematch of the Super Bowl, the Seahawks and the Patriots,
- 18:02Speaker 1: and kind of looked a little bit similar as well
- 18:04Speaker 1: with the Seahawks coming out on top. But Patriots wide
- 18:07Speaker 1: receiver A.J. Brown is headed to IR after getting a
- 18:10Speaker 1: high ankle sprain in that game, and that means he
- 18:12Speaker 1: won't be available in week three when the Patriots come
- 18:15Speaker 1: to Jacksonville for that matchup. So that will certainly affect
- 18:18Speaker 1: things because that was a huge part of their offense
- 18:20Speaker 1: bringing in A.J. Brown to add as a target for
- 18:23Speaker 1: Drake Mack?
- 18:23Speaker 3: Well, absolutely. We were talking about it earlier.
- 18:25Speaker 4: That was an offense last year that relied on the
- 18:27Speaker 4: running game, and the running game doesn't look that good
- 18:29Speaker 4: right now.
- 18:30Speaker 3: So now if you've got a quarterback going.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Against one of the best running defenses in football without
- 18:35Speaker 4: the weapon they gave up a first-round pick to go
- 18:37Speaker 4: and get, it makes their job much more difficult.
- 18:39Speaker 3: They're a well-coached team. They're a talented team.
- 18:42Speaker 4: But that is a blow, and I'm hearing that might
- 18:45Speaker 4: be six-week high ankle injury, one that might really cost
- 18:48Speaker 4: them and put them behind the eighth ball in the AFC.
- 18:50Speaker 5: The Patriots are going to be interesting in the first
- 18:53Speaker 5: part of the season. Look, they made the Super Bowl,
- 18:57Speaker 5: and they deserve to make it outside the Jaguars. I
- 19:00Speaker 5: thought they were the best team in the AFC. But
- 19:04Speaker 5: they played a schedule that was not great. Lost to
- 19:09Speaker 5: the Bills and the Seahawks. The two better teams they
- 19:11Speaker 5: played have handled them. The Jaguars never got their shot
- 19:15Speaker 5: at them. Yeah. It's going to be interesting, that game,
- 19:19Speaker 5: in a couple weeks. I'm not looking ahead to it.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Don't get me wrong. But the Patriots, I think to themselves,
- 19:24Speaker 5: are still probably saying, hey, we need to beat the
- 19:27Speaker 5: elite teams. The Broncos, they beat without the Broncos quarterback.
- 19:33Speaker 5: They got past the Texans. So I'm not discounting what
- 19:35Speaker 5: they did. But I think to themselves, they still need
- 19:39Speaker 5: to punch some of these Good, good teams are playing
- 19:43Speaker 5: in the mouth. I think that's going to be their
- 19:45Speaker 5: thought coming in here in not two weeks.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Let's look inside of the AFC South. because Jaguars are
- 19:51Speaker 1: in sole first place because all the other teams lost
- 19:53Speaker 1: in their week one matchups. The Texans could not get
- 19:57Speaker 1: it done at the end of the game. C.J. Stroud
- 19:59Speaker 1: fumbling the Bills outlast them in Houston to get that
- 20:02Speaker 1: week one win. That was a back and forth affair.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Well, there was a little bit of, I mean, if
- 20:06Speaker 5: you're the Jags, you're saying, welcome to our world. I mean,
- 20:09Speaker 5: Josh Allen's Josh Allen. And I get the Texans got
- 20:13Speaker 5: down there late and then couldn't close. To me, that's
- 20:18Speaker 5: two elite teams playing in a game that'll matter in December.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Interesting a little bit that the Texans gave up that number, but...
- 20:31Speaker 5: Josh Allen can make you give up numbers.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Listen, Demiko Ryans himself said yesterday, hey, listen, 2025 was 2025.
- 20:37Speaker 4: We've got to start all over and prove ourselves. You
- 20:40Speaker 4: can look at our roster and see what we're made
- 20:42Speaker 4: of and think, but you actually have to go and
- 20:44Speaker 4: do it. Do I think that that defense is going
- 20:46Speaker 4: to be elite? Yeah, they're really, really talented. I was
- 20:50Speaker 4: more impressed with the offense.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I mean, I get it.
- 20:52Speaker 1: C.J.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Stroud coughed those two balls up. But they put up
- 20:55Speaker 3: 31 points. I mean, with C.J.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Stroud, everybody's pointing their finger at him and saying, are
- 21:00Speaker 4: you worthy of a long-term contract?
- 21:03Speaker 3: Are you that good?
- 21:04Speaker 4: Listen, they brought in David Montgomery, who's an older running back,
- 21:06Speaker 4: but he played well. He scored three touchdowns as both
- 21:09Speaker 4: a runner and a receiver. Their offensive line, they've got
- 21:12Speaker 4: a little question mark on the edges, but they look
- 21:14Speaker 4: like they're pretty good up the middle. I think they'll
- 21:17Speaker 4: be fine, and I think they'll be in this thing
- 21:18Speaker 4: at the end.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Well, don't forget, we talked all last week about week
- 21:21Speaker 5: one weirdness. The Jaguars didn't experience it. The Texans giving
- 21:24Speaker 5: up that kind of number feels like week one weirdness.
- 21:27Speaker 5: And remember, I don't mean to bring up all the
- 21:29Speaker 5: old times, the Jaguars scored, what, 36 on the best
- 21:33Speaker 5: defense in NFL history, the Ravens, in 2020, in 2000.
- 21:36Speaker 5: They've lost it. Elite defenses, which I think the Texans are,
- 21:43Speaker 5: can have games where they give up points in this league.
- 21:46Speaker 5: It's the best football in the world.
- 21:48Speaker 1: The Ravens went to Indianapolis, and under new head coach,
- 21:52Speaker 1: first time in a while, they came out and dominated
- 21:54Speaker 1: as well. Lamar Jackson got on some turf, John, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: was running all over the place. Are you surprised a
- 21:59Speaker 1: little bit by what the Colts did, or were you
- 22:00Speaker 1: not quite sure what they looked like?
- 22:02Speaker 5: Well, this one really felt like a week one thing
- 22:06Speaker 5: to me. You had a new staff in Baltimore with
- 22:09Speaker 5: established personnel. Look, I was surprised it was a 19-point
- 22:15Speaker 5: win for the Ravens. I think the Colts still sort
- 22:20Speaker 5: of have to prove that they were hot at the
- 22:24Speaker 5: beginning of last year and then Daniel Jones got hurt
- 22:26Speaker 5: and wrecked their season. But they were still sort of
- 22:29Speaker 5: trying to prove themselves even during that winning streak. You
- 22:33Speaker 5: always thought you could get them back and pull them in.
- 22:36Speaker 5: I think they still need to prove that they belong
- 22:40Speaker 5: in the elite conversation. Again, that That felt a little
- 22:45Speaker 5: like week one weird to me, Ron.
- 22:48Speaker 3: I watched Daniel Jones pretty closely. I went back and
- 22:50Speaker 3: watched that game. He doesn't look right. And all we
- 22:52Speaker 3: heard coming out of training camp was, oh, he's back.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Didn't cost him anything. He's back. Well, listen, you're talking
- 22:58Speaker 3: about a quarterback with an Achilles. Of course he isn't
- 23:00Speaker 3: going to be back on opening day. It takes some time.
- 23:02Speaker 4: But it looked like he was favoring that right leg
- 23:05Speaker 4: and just trying to make sure. I didn't think he
- 23:07Speaker 4: stepped into all of his throws.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Just me.
- 23:10Speaker 4: My opinion is that he is not right yet. If
- 23:13Speaker 4: he gets right, obviously they have the ability to be explosive.
- 23:16Speaker 4: The other thing that I thought was interesting about them
- 23:18Speaker 4: was they didn't get a single pass breakup from their
- 23:20Speaker 4: high-priced secondary. They paid a lot of money for Sauce Gardner,
- 23:24Speaker 4: and his arrival coincided with Daniel Jones getting injured, so
- 23:29Speaker 4: it's tough to say, but boy, they haven't gotten much
- 23:33Speaker 4: from him, and they gave up the world.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Two first-round picks.
- 23:37Speaker 5: And for people who don't know, I think most people
- 23:39Speaker 5: who follow football closely know Achilles are a or a dangerous, devastating,
- 23:46Speaker 5: cruel injury. People talk about ACLs all the time. It's
- 23:49Speaker 5: not close. Achilles is the worry injury when you hear it.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And if I'm remembering correctly, he got hurt against the Jaguars,
- 23:58Speaker 1: but it was because he was, it was the leg
- 24:00Speaker 1: he was favoring because he had an injury on the
- 24:01Speaker 1: other leg. So I can imagine that's part of his hesitation, knowing, yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 1: maybe it's better on this side, but I'm still trying
- 24:08Speaker 1: to figure out everything out.
- 24:09Speaker 5: And the Sauce Gardner thing, you know, it's usually a
- 24:15Speaker 5: finishing touch piece. It's an important year for that franchise.
- 24:22Speaker 3: They double down, right?
- 24:23Speaker 4: I mean, they sent two picks away, and then they
- 24:25Speaker 4: lose their quarterback, and then they pay their quarterback, and
- 24:28Speaker 4: he doesn't look right. I mean, that thing is either
- 24:30Speaker 4: going to get right in a hurry or it's going
- 24:32Speaker 4: to implode, and they're going to clean house up there.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I'm going to keep an eye on. And then the Jets,
- 24:36Speaker 1: the team that may benefit from that if the Colts
- 24:39Speaker 1: aren't able to figure things out, They got a win
- 24:41Speaker 1: over the Titans, and I don't know what to expect. Titans, again,
- 24:44Speaker 1: had new coaching staff, a lot of changes. Robert Sala
- 24:47Speaker 1: in charge over there. But it felt like Cam Ward
- 24:49Speaker 1: kind of took a step back when you were hoping,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you know, getting a new coordinator in there and all
- 24:53Speaker 1: that is going to be.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Able to come to fruition.
- 24:56Speaker 4: He didn't look good in the preseason, and he certainly
- 24:58Speaker 4: didn't look good against the Jets. And listen, Aaron Glenn
- 25:01Speaker 4: has some talent on that defense, and he's obviously known
- 25:04Speaker 4: as a really sharp defensive mind.
- 25:07Speaker 3: So he made it difficult. But the Cam Ward thing.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Is concerning because the Titans could find themselves in a
- 25:13Speaker 4: position to grab another quarterback if they're at the top
- 25:16Speaker 4: of the draft this year.
- 25:17Speaker 3: They just didn't look good in any aspect of the game.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll clarify this by saying you can pull out, like,
- 25:25Speaker 5: there are quick changes in the NFL, so this may
- 25:28Speaker 5: not hold. The Titans look like a team that has
- 25:32Speaker 5: a heavier lift out of their situation than than maybe
- 25:38Speaker 5: the other teams. And, again, week one's weird. The Patriots
- 25:42Speaker 5: lost to the Raiders week one last year. So it
- 25:46Speaker 5: can turn around. But the Jaguars need to take advantage
- 25:50Speaker 5: of this downtime for the Titans. Yes, they do.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Stay with us on Jags AM after the break. We
- 25:54Speaker 1: will tell you what's coming up the rest of the week.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Week two's matchup against the Broncos brought to you by
- 26:02Speaker 1: Paramount +. We'll see you on Sunday for your live
- 26:04Speaker 1: local NFL and CBS games every week.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Fires deep. Toward the end zone.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Diving attempt!
- 26:11Speaker 5: What a watch! Let's go!
- 26:13Speaker 1: Let's go!
- 26:13Speaker 4: Good job, boy.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Good job. Good job.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Good ball!
- 26:22Speaker 5: How was the throw?
- 26:22Speaker 3: I got hit. You dope for it?
- 26:24Speaker 2: I dope for it.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Great job, dude.
- 26:25Speaker 5: I got you.
- 26:26Speaker 1: We're good. Let's head!
- 26:27Speaker 2: Play fake.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Trevor Lowe.
- 26:28Speaker 5: Fires into the end zone.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Diving attempt! Caught with a touchdown!
- 26:36Speaker 1: Josh!
- 26:37Speaker 4: I don't know how he caught that, dude.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Yeah, he was just like, Josh's touchdown catch was sick.
- 26:45Speaker 5: We're not f * * * ing around.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Hey, it might only be 45,000, but it's loud as
- 26:48Speaker 3: f * * * in here. Come on!
- 26:50Speaker 5: Now fires toward the end zone.
- 26:52Speaker 3: That ball is caught! Touchdown!
- 26:56Speaker 4: Come on!
- 26:58Speaker 1: Good job. Good job, brother. We have Lawrence miked up
- 27:04Speaker 1: this week for those four pretty touchdown passes. You're going
- 27:06Speaker 1: to want to check that out on Jaguars YouTube and Jaguars.com.
- 27:10Speaker 1: It's even fun to relive it now.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Listen, the one that he threw to Jacoby Myers, the
- 27:14Speaker 4: last one we saw there, I had not seen the
- 27:16Speaker 4: end zone view until just right now. And, I mean,
- 27:18Speaker 4: it's a big guy going against his body and putting
- 27:21Speaker 4: it on a rope right.
- 27:23Speaker 3: To Jacoby Myers. He's proving to everyone that he is
- 27:27Speaker 3: who we thought he was.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I think. People forget because it's been a journey
- 27:32Speaker 5: through a lot of, you know, thickets to get here.
- 27:37Speaker 5: He's special. Yeah. And special players do special things. And athletically,
- 27:43Speaker 5: it's easy to forget there's a reason he went number
- 27:45Speaker 5: one overall in the draft. He does things that a
- 27:48Speaker 5: lot of quarterbacks can't do.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Just look at the last nine regular season games. The
- 27:51Speaker 3: Jaguars are 9-0.
- 27:52Speaker 4: He has 28 touchdown passes, which is the most in
- 27:54Speaker 4: the NFL by any quarterback over the nine-game stretch. And
- 27:57Speaker 4: his passer rating is 111.5, which is number one over
- 28:00Speaker 4: those nine games among all quarterbacks in the NFL. So
- 28:03Speaker 4: he's on a nine-game tear, a nine-game sample. I don't
- 28:06Speaker 4: know whether that's enough for you to say, oh, yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 4: that's exactly who he is.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It is to me.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Check, check, check. Looking pretty good. A busy week ahead,
- 28:14Speaker 1: of course. We'll be back here on JAGZAM tomorrow to
- 28:16Speaker 1: do a deep dive into that matchup against the Broncos
- 28:18Speaker 1: and tell you what we think will happen in week two.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Enjoy your day.
