- 0:00It's Friday, the 17th of April. Welcome to Five Things
- 0:16Good morning. Good.
- 0:19Morning. How you doing?
- 0:21I'm good. How are you?
- 0:23Yeah, good. I just, it's really weird.
- 0:24I just had the the call with the AIPAC show 5 things Friday,
- 0:28AIPAC and they were in Malaysia and Singapore just like, yeah,
- 0:36it's interesting how like these trends go across and we ended up
- 0:39talking about AIGO and stuff like that.
- 0:41But yeah, really good. I can see you've got a lovely
- 0:44new light because I can see you, which is fantastic.
- 0:50Unlike last week where it was fuzzy as hell, I may as well
- 0:53have not even been on camera. Yeah.
- 0:55It's OK. It was fine, it was good and and
- 0:57maybe you'll be interested or not for the first time and I'm
- 1:01pretty sure it's down to you. We've got 55% female
- 1:04listenership so. Come on, love that.
- 1:07Congratulations, which is brilliant.
- 1:12OK, listen, let's get straight into it.
- 1:14It's been a busy week for both of us.
- 1:17Why don't we start with your two?
- 1:18Yeah, let's do it. Gym Shark have just announced
- 1:22its first ever gym in Miami, and they're calling it the Gym Shark
- 1:27Lifting Club. And honestly, it makes so much
- 1:30sense. You know, this is a brand that
- 1:32have spent over a decade building 1 of the the strongest
- 1:35fitness communities in the world.
- 1:37You know, they've got millions of customers.
- 1:38You know, when they do events, 10s of thousands of people turn
- 1:42up. So opening a physical gym and
- 1:46not just a star is a really exciting pivot.
- 1:50You know, obviously up until now, gym shark have existed in
- 1:53your wardrobe, on your phone, occasional events, you know,
- 1:56somewhere, but having somewhere that people can actually go show
- 1:59up and train and spend time in it, you know, it's, it's just so
- 2:04exciting. And you know, they're not the
- 2:06only ones doing this. You know, Dior are a good
- 2:08example who have invested heavily in into spas and
- 2:13Wellness. We've got Lululemon who's
- 2:15building out all of these different yoga and Wellness
- 2:17studios. Kit is experimenting with paddle
- 2:20carts, who is another one that I was going to mention, aloe yoga.
- 2:24I've launched A wildest club. You know, different audiences,
- 2:27same direction. You know, brands are really
- 2:29starting to move away from just selling more stuff and instead
- 2:33really investing heavily in experiences, you know, places
- 2:36you can go, things you can do in environments you can be a part
- 2:39of. And I've always spoken about
- 2:40this a million times, but I think a big part of it is where
- 2:43is the customer right now? You know, people are tired of
- 2:47constantness, you know, more product, more noise, you know,
- 2:51that they're really sick of being sold to.
- 2:54And this is, is really making customers feel a part of
- 2:57something. You know, it's not a
- 2:59transaction. It really is a sense of
- 3:01belonging. Umm, so I loved it.
- 3:04I'm really excited to buy it. Umm yeah.
- 3:06I do always say I've always believed that UMM belonging will
- 3:10always drive more to them products.
- 3:12So I just think it's so smart what they're doing, I really do.
- 3:15Me too. I love it.
- 3:16I'm just gonna I know we said you I'm gonna let you do too,
- 3:18but actually the, the sort of my one of my points was the, the
- 3:22data that's coming back. And so people who listen to me,
- 3:26God help you, they've I've been talking about how there's these
- 3:30three trends that are defining retail, which is retail at the
- 3:34speed of experience, retail at the speed of community and
- 3:37culture and retail at speed of intelligence.
- 3:40And what's happening in in the UK, which I know this is opening
- 3:43in Miami, but it feels why brands really need to go that
- 3:48extra mile, which lends itself to what you'll talk about in a
- 3:50minute is how the reality in the UK is that the consumers are
- 3:54splitting into two core cohorts, essential driven spending
- 4:00thinking goes ALDI little why Tesco's has had so good.
- 4:05And then the discretionary pullback, if, if you know,
- 4:08fashion is discretionary and people are pulling back from it
- 4:11and the data is showing that, how are brands going to engage
- 4:15communities? And I think that's why
- 4:18everything that you've just mentioned there sort of lends
- 4:20itself to, yes, they're pulling back on discretionary, but is
- 4:24going to the gym discretionary or essential?
- 4:27And I guess, you know, people will have a different view on
- 4:29it. But I, I think it's really
- 4:31interesting and how although society or consumers are
- 4:35fracturing into these two camps, we may end up with some really
- 4:40amazing new retail experiences. I agree.
- 4:43We'll talk about in one second being, but then it gets a
- 4:47different level, which for retailers and and I'm I'm going
- 4:50to actually, because this links to the the other point that I
- 4:53wanted to talk about, which was loyalty.
- 4:55How do you create Realty and how does loyalty just go away?
- 4:59And you mentioned this and and I don't know if you know or saw,
- 5:02but you mentioned the Ubereats and Nectar thing and then the
- 5:06person who runs that Ubereats, they saw the episode and then
- 5:11common shared and liked. Thank.
- 5:13You love it. Yeah.
- 5:15So that was again, you know, Ubereats watch our show or they
- 5:19saw that clip, but it just shows you how loyalty is actually not
- 5:23a marketing tool anymore, it's a system.
- 5:26So then Mr or Mrs Retailer, how are you going to be building
- 5:31these new systems of engagement, Right.
- 5:34So I just think those two lended itself to what what you were
- 5:36talking about really. Nicely, but.
- 5:38Moving back to you for your second one.
- 5:41Yeah, so this ties in very nicely.
- 5:44What you've just been saying, umm, is that Selfridges have
- 5:47just opened up 40 Juke, which is a 25,000 square foot private
- 5:56mender stairs inside of its store.
- 5:59Look at it. It is just incredible stunning,
- 6:03but it's a huge move. I think we'll call it the the
- 6:05pinnacle of the Selfridges customer universe.
- 6:09But inside, I mean, obviously it's beautiful.
- 6:11I'd love to hang out in there. But they've got personal
- 6:15shopping, hospitality, cultural programming, social spaces.
- 6:19It's all in one space. You know, it's, it's still
- 6:21retail. It's just very, very, very
- 6:23elevated. Yeah, they have 24 private
- 6:27shopping suites, I know, and they've got, they've got over 60
- 6:33personal shopping experts as well.
- 6:34But this is very focused on that, that, you know, that the
- 6:38high spend categories, this is really for their, their, their
- 6:41high earners. You know, it's AI think they've
- 6:43got a private bar in there as well, private lounge and bar,
- 6:47event and exhibition spaces, you know, but it is invite only for
- 6:52their ultra high worth clients. And I know that they have
- 6:56Selfridges unlocked and I believe you have to spend over
- 7:00£20,000 to get access one day. It's, I mean, this is
- 7:07aspirational, but. It's very aspirational.
- 7:10What's really, I mean, I, I fly and, and this is just a matter
- 7:14of fact for me, it's not like a brag, but you know, you get
- 7:17these tears in, in BA and I'm Iberia and the, the new tier is
- 7:24tier 0 because they, you know, Tier 1 is gold and everything
- 7:28and said to you get access, but it's just who gets on the plane
- 7:311st. And yeah, group zero goes.
- 7:33And I was thinking from a marketing perspective, who wants
- 7:36to be in Group 0? But look at Selfridges.
- 7:39I mean, no one wants to be, but Selfridges have a naming
- 7:44category, which is VVSP, which is a very, very Selfridge people
- 7:50person who you get keys apparently to unlocking space is
- 7:56unlocked. And then you have the VSP, which
- 7:58is a a very Selfridges people. You know, it's a little bit
- 8:02clunky, but it's really, you know, VVSP and a VSP.
- 8:06But it's going to really create that formal, you know, And yeah,
- 8:10you're right, you earn keys by spending and by visiting their
- 8:14experiences. So obviously the more engaged
- 8:16you are, the more access you unlock.
- 8:18And then the top tier customers, there's different access points
- 8:21to it, but the top, top tiers, the highest vendors, they Get
- 8:24full access. So again, it's, you know, again,
- 8:27it is, it's like being in the, you've got the gold members area
- 8:32in the airport and then you've got the, the normal BA large.
- 8:36It's very much like that. And it will encourage spending
- 8:39because people will want access. It's, it's really smart, but I
- 8:43think it's violence. But it's good because it's, it's
- 8:49keeping customers in the store longer as well.
- 8:51It's blending shopping with socialising and it's making
- 8:54retail feel like a real destination again.
- 8:57I mean, Selfridges already feels like a destination.
- 8:59I can spend hours in there because there is so much to do
- 9:02with that and it's very exciting.
- 9:03But this, this takes it to another level.
- 9:06You know, it's that classic London private members club
- 9:10which a lot of people love, but built in a department store.
- 9:14It's really good. It's yeah, I'm excited by it.
- 9:18Maybe one day I'll stand 20,000 lbs and get in there.
- 9:22And I think it puts to sleep that whole argument that's going
- 9:25on that department stores are over.
- 9:27You know, people don't want which which I I think that's
- 9:29such rubbish, such rubbish. Rubbish.
- 9:32Department stores are over. No one wants to go in and just
- 9:36like have a 55,000 labels thrown at you stacked up.
- 9:41You want an experience, you want to go.
- 9:42Yeah, which was why department stores were created.
- 9:45It's true. I mean, look at John, John Lewis
- 9:47now. I went in John Lewis through the
- 9:48day and I was like this. It's so much better.
- 9:51You know, it's a place I actually wanted to spend time in
- 9:54because you go in other department stores and I'm like
- 9:57scuttling around trying to find one.
- 9:59I get and I want to get out. I want to get out as soon as
- 10:01possible. But Selfridges, I'd spend a day
- 10:03there. John Lewis are really that
- 10:05they're getting towards that. I think it's the renovations
- 10:07that they're doing. So yeah.
- 10:09I mean, just go to John Lewis. Yeah, Oxford St.
- 10:12It's, it's lovely. It's a really lovely experience.
- 10:15And they're fish and chips on the and the canteen upstairs.
- 10:20I always stop there. Me and my mum.
- 10:22I would love her fish and chips on a Friday.
- 10:26Anyway, my final one, Yeah, another High Street brand that
- 10:30came together. Vodafone and three are launching
- 10:34their Co branded stores. I think the merger was last year
- 10:37in 2025. They're now going through and I
- 10:41think you covered Tesco Mobile. So, you know, no surprise here
- 10:44what they say in their press releases.
- 10:46We're focused on on experiential elements within retail more and
- 10:51so you know, less probably 55,000 mobiles where you just go
- 10:56and point, but probably little use cases on content creators or
- 11:01I don't know, sports and fitness, but they're starting
- 11:04their High Street transformation.
- 11:06The only little question I had at the back of my head was
- 11:08obviously there's an investment going in, but at the moment
- 11:11you've got two, you're going to come down to one that's going to
- 11:13be in some areas on some high streets.
- 11:16That means another vacant lot. But yeah, anyway, I'm not gonna
- 11:20say no to having investment in the UK High Street.
- 11:23So phenomenal. Nice to see that Vodafone 3
- 11:27investing in new experiences in retail, which brings us lovely
- 11:32and nicely to close just quickly.
- 11:36How was Richmond last week? Did you have fun?
- 11:38Richmond was really, really great.
- 11:41I was saying I just constantly have my notepad out, just
- 11:45writing, writing my tick. Really insightful.
- 11:48Lots of different talks. I went to a fantastic talk.
- 11:52It was the CEO of New Doc Linda on cybersecurity, which sounds
- 11:56like the most dullest topic we know, but it's a topic that
- 12:00everybody has to learn about. And actually it was, it was so
- 12:04interesting. It really was just super
- 12:07insightful of and really great speakers.
- 12:09But that, I would say was my highlight, surprisingly out of
- 12:13all the talks. Yeah, she just presented it in
- 12:16such a more human and relatable way and really kind of
- 12:20highlighted things that actually more start doing that that we
- 12:24should be doing. It was, I mean, what they're
- 12:26doing is just phenomenal. You saw last week, Yeah, yeah,
- 12:30yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 12:31So yeah, it was great. Would highly recommend for any
- 12:35retailers. I know they do a few on seats,
- 12:38yeah. Cool.
- 12:38Well, I'm not gonna hold out on seeing you at RTS next week
- 12:42because from Shoptalk Lux, I know you're super, super busy.
- 12:46So anyway, I may see you at RTS next week.
- 12:49I hope. We do.
- 12:51It's not a problem. Have a lovely weekend and I may
- 12:56see you next week. I hope so.
- 12:58Have a lovely weekend, Alex. You too.
- 13:01Bye.
