- 0:46and Stephanie Coumlinson. Chapter two, Madame Loulu Alien Amy went
- 0:54around the corner to Madame Lulu's fortune telling parlor. It
- 0:58was pink and yellow outside, the dark and little spooky insight.
- 1:02Even though the girls knew that Madame Lulu was nice
- 1:06missus Tompkins from the first floor of Allie's building, they
- 1:10still got the shivers going inside. You go in first,
- 1:14said Alie, taking a step back. No you, said Amy,
- 1:18taking two steps back, No you, said Alie, taking three
- 1:22steps back. Greetings fortune seekers, called a husky voice from
- 1:28the dark. Why don't you both come inside? Alie and
- 1:33Amy held hands and squeezed through the doorway together. Madame
- 1:37Lulu sat behind a beaded curtain. She was dressed in
- 1:40black with a veil on her head. She had about
- 1:44twenty bracelets on each arm. They clinked together whenever she moved.
- 1:50What to bring you here, she asked? Clink. Oh, we
- 1:57want our fortune's toad, said Amy. Amy and Ali each
- 2:01held out a coin to Madame Lulu. Madame Lulu slipped
- 2:05the coins into her pocket. Clink. Can you tell us
- 2:09what the summer is going to be like? Asked Ali.
- 2:13Of course, said Madame Lulu. She gazed into her crystal ball.
- 2:20The summer will be hazy, hot and humid, she said.
- 2:26In fact, it already is. Madame Lulu wiped the sweat
- 2:31off her forehead with a lace handkerchief. Clink. Ali and
- 2:35Amy looked at each other. Thanks, but that's not what
- 2:39we meant, said Amy. We don't need to know about
- 2:42the weather. We need to know about us, she poked Ali,
- 2:46who put another coin on the table. Madame Lulu took
- 2:50the coin. Clink. Let me see your palms, she said Alian.
- 2:57Amy turned to their palms up and held them out. Hm.
- 3:03Nice and clean, said Madame Lulu, and do you moisture eyes? No,
- 3:11we don't, said Allie. You're going to tell our fortunes
- 3:15right absolutely, one best friend's fortune coming right up, said
- 3:23Madame Lulu. I see an interesting story. Today is a
- 3:27special days it's coming to me now. Madame Lulu closed
- 3:33her eyes and held her fingers to her brow, going
- 3:36into a trance. She said, today is the very first
- 3:42day of your summer vacation. Wow, how did she know that,
- 3:47whispered Amie. Madame Lulu continued, you will take a trip
- 3:53to a special place. I see sunshining, I hear water splashing.
- 3:58I smell hot dog cooking on an open fire. Suddenly,
- 4:03Madame Lulu snapped out of her trance. Did someone say
- 4:07hot dogs? She asked? You did, said Ali and Amy together.
- 4:12Madame Lulu looked at her watch. Oh yes, it's time
- 4:16for my coffee break, she said. Ali and Amy had
- 4:20no more coins anyway. They walked through the beat a
- 4:23curtain and out into the hazy, hot and humid day boom.
- 4:28They bumped right into a boy named Marvin. Amy yelled,
- 4:33why don't you watch where you're going? Watch where I'm going,
- 4:37said Marvin Lopez. He checked his skateboard for scratches. Watch
- 4:42where you're going. You're the ones who bumped into me. Well,
- 4:46don't do it again, said Alie. Alie, Amy and Marvin
- 4:50could go round and rounding silly all day long, but
- 4:53Ali and Amy had no time for that. Today. They
- 4:56put their noses in the air linked arms and headed
- 5:00for home. See you later, alligator, said Amy, going into
- 5:04her building. In a while, crocodile, said Alie, going into hers.
- 5:10Chapter three, Camp Mary Moose. Ali's father and mother were
- 5:15waiting for her when she walked in the door. Hi, honey,
- 5:20said her mother, with a big smile. We have wonderful
- 5:23news for you, said her father. What is it, asked Allie.
- 5:27Remember that camp you wanted to go to, the one
- 5:30we talked about last winter, said her mother. Allie perked up.
- 5:35You mean Camp Mary Moose where they have sailboats and everything.
- 5:39She said. That's the one, said Ali's father. I thought
- 5:44there was no room for me. I thought it was
- 5:46all filled up, said Allie. There was a last minute opening,
- 5:50so now you can go, said Ali's mother. Camp starts
- 5:54the day after tomorrow. Allie could hardly believe it. She
- 5:58always wanted to go to a sleep away camp, sunshine, swimming, campfires. Wow,
- 6:05this has to be the special place Madam Lulu was
- 6:08talking about. Allie was so happy she wanted to tell
- 6:12Amy right away. Ring ring, the telephone rang at Amy's house.
- 6:18Amy's father answered it. It's for you, Amy, he said,
- 6:23guess who. Amy had no trouble guessing. Hi, Allie, she said,
- 6:29I haven't talked to you in five whole minutes. What's new?
- 6:33What's new? Front page News, shouted Allie. My parents just
- 6:37told me. I'm going to camp, Marry News. I'm going
- 6:41for the whole summer. There's a lake with boats and
- 6:44everyone gets to sleep in a tent. Amy was so
- 6:47surprised she didn't say anything for a minute. Then she
- 6:50burst out, you can't go to camp, not without me.
- 6:54We're best friends, we have plans. Oh my gosh, you're right.
- 6:58Yuped Allie. I forgot you weren't going. I can't go
- 7:03to camp without you. That's right, said Amy. You can't,
- 7:07but maybe I can go too. I'll ask my parents
- 7:12found one work. There was only one space, and my
- 7:14parents got it for me, said Alie sadly. But wait,
- 7:18I know what to do. I'll call you back, Allie,
- 7:21hung up and found her parents. I can't go to camp,
- 7:25she said. I'm staying home with Amy. Allie, you have
- 7:28to go, said her mother. We made all the arrangements,
- 7:32but Amy and I do everything together, said Alie. You
- 7:36and Amy can write to each other, said her father.
- 7:39You have a wonderful time at camp, said her mother. No,
- 7:42I won't, said Allie. Not without Amy. I won't. Well,
- 7:47you have to give it a chance, said her father.
- 7:51You're going, and that's final. Allie walked slowly to her room.
- 7:55She sat down on her bed to think. A minute later,
- 7:58she popped up, raced to the phone, and dialed Amy's number.
- 8:02Meet me downstairs. We've got to talk, she said. Okay, sir, Amy,
- 8:07I'm on my way. Six five four three two one. Allie.
- 8:12Amy burst out of their doors at the exact same moment.
- 8:19Chapter four, Allie's plan. I've got a plan, said Alie.
- 8:24It's great. It's the best. I'm a genius. You won't
- 8:27believe it. Well, I can't believe it if I don't
- 8:30hear it, sired Amy. What is it? Allie pulled a
- 8:33jump rope out of her back pocket. This, she shouted,
- 8:38This looks like a jump rope to me. Not a
- 8:40genius plan, said Amy. But wait till you see what
- 8:43we do with it, said Allie. She been down and
- 8:46tied their ankles together. Now I can't go to camp.
- 8:50I had to stay here with you. This is so wicky,
- 8:53said Amy. This is so us, said Alie. The girls
- 8:57began to walk with the jump rope tight around their ankles.
- 9:01Step step, step, It's working, said Amy. This is fun.
- 9:06Step step step See I am a genius, said Alie.
- 9:11Step step step boom. Down They went ouch, said Amy.
- 9:17The two friends got up. They tried again. This time
- 9:20they went more carefully. Step in side feet, step outside feet,
- 9:26step inside feet, step outside feet. We've got it, said Ali, Together,
- 9:32said Amy. Forever, said Alie. They walked faster and faster
- 9:38on their third trip around the block. They were really zooming.
- 9:42As they turned the corner, they bumped right into Marvin,
- 9:46yelled Ali and Amy. Why don't you watch where you're going?
- 9:51Watch where I'm going? Watch where you're going, said Marvin.
- 9:55Marvin been down to pick up his skateboard when he
- 9:58saw their ankles tied together, started laughing, Hey, whats goofy
- 10:04and has three legs? He asked. He did not wait
- 10:07for an answer. HiT's you. You look like a three
- 10:10lady cookie bird. Oh really, there's no such thing as
- 10:15a cookie bird, said Amy. Exactly, said Marvin. So how
- 10:20come you're tied together? If you must know, mister Marvin
- 10:24Q smarty pants, being tied together as part of a
- 10:27genius plan to prevent our summer separation, said Ali. Separation.
- 10:34No way, said Marvin. You two are glued together. Yes, way,
- 10:39said Ali. It's too horrible even to think about. It's
- 10:43definitely too horrible to talk about. Said Amy. We're leaving.
- 10:48Allie and Amy put their noses in the air and
- 10:50stomped away. Inside feed outside feet inside feet, outside feet.
- 10:56Bye bye, cookie bird, called Marvin. The girls played together
- 11:00the rest of the afternoon, then headed home. When they
- 11:03got to their street, Amy's mother called Amy it's time
- 11:07for supper. Amy took a step forward toward her building.
- 11:12Something was pulling her bike. It was Allie. For a minute,
- 11:15Amy had forgotten all about being tied to her. I
- 11:18guess we have to eat together. What are you having
- 11:21for supper, asked Amy. My mother's making fish fries, said Alie. Ooh, Smellie,
- 11:28I hate that, said Amy. Why don't she come to
- 11:31my house? What are you having, asked Allie. Not too sure,
- 11:35sed Amy. But I know it's leftovers and it's green. Ooh,
- 11:39said Alie. You know I don't eat anything green. Well,
- 11:43I'm hungry, Sami, Me too, said Allie. Maybe this isn't
- 11:48such a genius plan after all, Sirnami. Maybe you're right,
- 11:52said Alie. She sighed and then bent down and untied
- 11:55the jump rope. Allie and Amy said goodbye and went
- 11:58into their buildings. That night, both of them had trouble sleeping.
- 12:03In two days. Ali was going to camp without Amy.
- 12:08Chapter five, Tick Tick Tick. Today is our last day together,
- 12:13Amy said gloomily. The next morning. That's why we have
- 12:17to get busy, said Ali, doing what, asked any Everything.
- 12:21We have to do everything on our list, Allie exclaimed,
- 12:24waving the list in the air. But we can't do
- 12:27it all on one day, said Amy. Yes we can.
- 12:30We just have to move fast. We already visited Madame Lulu,
- 12:34said Ali, crossing it off the list. The next thing
- 12:37is Spring Street Fair, said Amie. Are you ready? Said Ali? Ready?
- 12:43Said Amy. On your mark, Get set go, cried Ali.
- 12:48Amy and Alli raced around the corner to the fair.
- 12:51There was music playing and the street was filled with games, rides,
- 12:55food to eat, and things to buy. This is great.
- 12:59Let's get our faces painted. Let's go on the ferris wheel.
- 13:03Let's win a wind up fish, said Amy. Okay, we
- 13:07better set the alarms on our watches, said Alie. I
- 13:11have to pick for camp this afternoon. Amy and Ali
- 13:15set their watches and in half an hour their alarms
- 13:18would beep. They went to the face painting table. First,
- 13:22A friendly lady with a rose on her cheek asked
- 13:25what they wanted. I want a puppy, said Amy. I'll
- 13:29get a kitten, said Ali. The lady painted their faces.
- 13:33Al Ain and Amy looked great. Together. They had sixteen
- 13:36home minutes left. They raced to the ferris wheel. Before
- 13:40long they were swinging a basket way up high they
- 13:44could look out over the whole fair. Hey, I see
- 13:47the fishbow game, said Amy. When the ferris wheel stopped,
- 13:51the friends had eight minutes left. They ran straight to
- 13:55the game booth, but there was a long line. Tick tick,
- 14:00three minutes went by, tick tick tick, three more minutes
- 14:03went by. By the time the man behind the counter
- 14:06called next, they had only two minutes left. Ali and
- 14:10Amy walked up to the booth together. Four throws for
- 14:14fifty cents, said the man. Ali and Amy each gave
- 14:18the man coin and each got two balls. Amy went first.
- 14:23She knew she had to work fast. She tried not
- 14:25to look out at her watch. Okay, ball going to
- 14:29the bow. When nea wind up? Fish, she said. Amy
- 14:33was trying to throw quickly. She threw the ball too
- 14:37hard and went sailing across the street. Take it easy,
- 14:41said the man. I'll try, said Amy, but I'm in
- 14:44a hurry. She threw the second ball. The man ducked
- 14:49just in time. Let me try. It's my turn, said Ali.
- 14:53Her first ball landed way over in the space rocket right.
- 14:56They watched the ball disappear into the moon tunnel. Hurry,
- 15:00said Amy. Our time is almost up. I'm hurrying, shouted Ali.
- 15:05She threw the last ball. It bounced off the wall
- 15:08of the booth and landed right on a cone of
- 15:11cotton candy. Guess who's cotton candy? Marvin, Why don't you
- 15:16watch where you're walking? Shouted Allie and Amy. Together Watch
- 15:20where I'm walking. Watch where you're throwing, yelled Marvin. He
- 15:25ran over to them beep beep, beep, beep beep. What's
- 15:28all that beeping, asked Marvin. You two really are goofy. No,
- 15:33we really are organized, said Alie. Those beefs were our
- 15:37watch alarms. That means we have to go now by.
- 15:41She grabbed Amy's arm and dragged her out of the fair.
- 15:46Chapter six splash. Come on, Amy, we have to skate
- 15:50and sing backward. That's next on the list, said Ali
- 15:53as they headed home. What's after that, asked Amy. Swimming
- 15:57at the town pool, said Ali. We better hurry. Alian
- 16:03and Amy raced upstairs and came back down. With skates
- 16:06on their feet and bathing suits under their clothes. They
- 16:09headed for the pool, skating backwards and singing to the
- 16:13tune of the Star Spangled Banner be keenly silly Houseye
- 16:17you can say Oh. After stumbling quite a few times
- 16:20on skates and words, Ali and Amy finally made it
- 16:23to the pool. They tossed their things into lockers and
- 16:26headed out for some fun. Standing at the edge of
- 16:29the deep end, Ali called one, two three, jump splash.
- 16:34As soon as they were in, They swam underwater all
- 16:37the way to the shallow end. They swam right into
- 16:40a pair of feet. These looked like the very same
- 16:43feet they seem walking around the fair. Ali and Amy
- 16:47popped up out of the water. Marvin cried, Ali, why
- 16:52don't you watch where you're standing, Watch where I'm standing,
- 16:55Watch where you're swimming, said Marvin. We have to be
- 16:58at the end of the pool. We're going to play
- 17:00Marco Polo, said Alie. Well this end of the pool
- 17:04is taken, said Marvin. Allie and Amy looked at each
- 17:08other and nodded. It just so happens. We need three players,
- 17:12said Amy. Marvin, you can be it me it Sorry,
- 17:17I just forgot how to play, said Marvin. Let us
- 17:20remind you, said Allie. You close your eyes and call
- 17:23out Marco. Then we say polo and you have to
- 17:27catch us. Let me think about it, said Marvin, getting
- 17:30a funny look on his face, funnier than usual. Then
- 17:34he said, okay, I'll play. He closed his eyes, but
- 17:38instead of calling out Marco, he called Martha. That's not funny,
- 17:43said Amy. Try not to laugh, so sorry, said Marvin.
- 17:47I'll try again. He closed his eyes and called Michael Ronnie.
- 17:52Ali got a gleam in her eye. She was supposed
- 17:55to answer Polo. Instead, she said geez. Now, Amy got
- 18:00the idea tomato sauce. She called Marvin. Slashed through the water.
- 18:05After Amy, Amy slipped past him. Massachusetts, called Marvin. Amy
- 18:11tried to think of a state, Michigan. She called Minnesota.
- 18:16Called Ali. From a corner of the pool. Marvin dived
- 18:20in Ali's direction. His hand swatted her toe. You're it,
- 18:25he shouted. It was Ali's turn to close her eyes
- 18:29and call out Marco. Instead, she closed her eyes and
- 18:32called Marvin. They're great, Marvin, answered Amy. Groan loullly, gotcha,
- 18:39said Ali, taking Amy. Beep beep, beep, beep beep. The
- 18:43girl's alarms went off. Oh no, not again, said Marvin.
- 18:48We're very busy people, said Ali, rushing out of the pool.
- 18:52I'm going to camp tomorrow. I've got to get home
- 18:54and pack. She called over a shoulder what camp called Marvin,
- 18:59but Ali and Amy were already too far away to
- 19:02hear him. They quickly dried off and jumped into their clothes.
- 19:06Then they headed home. Ali and Amy stood in front
- 19:10of their buildings. They looked at their list. They had
- 19:13crossed off the first four things. There was still number five.
- 19:17Make a new list of things to do I guess
- 19:20there's no point in making up a new list now,
- 19:23said Amy. I guess not, said Ali. We can make
- 19:26another list when I come home. Alien and just stood there.
- 19:30Neither one wanted to go inside. Then Amy's mother called
- 19:34to her. Amy, please come upstairs. I guess I better go,
- 19:38said Amy. I'll miss you, but all right, I promise
- 19:42me too, and we'll be together again after the summer,
- 19:45said Alie. See you later, alligator, said Amy. In a while, crocodile,
- 19:52said Ali. Amy and Ally hugged each other. Then they
- 19:55disappeared into their buildings. Chapter seven, Let's go Ring Ring.
- 20:02Allie hadn't been home five minutes when the telephone rang.
- 20:05It was Amy, Guess what? Guess what? Amy shouted happily,
- 20:10what what? Asked Allie. There was another opening a camp
- 20:13mary moose, said Amy, and I'm going hooray, yelled Allie.
- 20:19We are so lucky. I can't believe it. I've got
- 20:21to go pack, said Amy. I'm so excited, me too,
- 20:25said Allie. See you tomorrow. The next morning, the families
- 20:29went outside and walked around the corner to the bus stop.
- 20:33Allie and Amy skipped ahead, singing and holding hands. The
- 20:37camp bus was waiting for them. The girls hugged their
- 20:40parents and jumped onto the bus. They stopped at the
- 20:43door and waved, calling bye Mom, Bye Dad. Just then
- 20:48they heard the sound of skateboard whilst scraping the sidewalks.
- 20:52Look it's Marvin, said Amy. You know I'm going to
- 20:56kind of miss him, said Alie. He can be obnoxious,
- 20:59but he's pretty funny too. You're right, said Amy. It
- 21:03was fun playing marco polo with him. Oh, well, we'll
- 21:06see him when we get back. Alie and Amy found
- 21:09two seats together on the bus. Oh, Marvin, here's your
- 21:14camp bag, called Marvin's mother, running after him. Amy looked
- 21:18at Alie. Ali looked at Amy. Did she say camp bag,
- 21:23asked Amie. It is impossible, said Alie, But it was possible.
- 21:29Marvin got on the bus wearing a Camp Mary Moose
- 21:31t shirt. Ali's foot was sticking out in the aisle boom.
- 21:36Marvin tripped right over it. Marvin, why don't you watch
- 21:40where you put your feet, said Alie. Watch where I
- 21:43put my feet. Watch where you put yours? Said Marvin.
- 21:48Look out, Allie, cried Amy, ducking down in her seat.
- 21:52There's a big googly eyebug climbing up Marvin's T shirt.
- 21:56Marvin jumped back and started brushing at his shirt. Got chest,
- 22:00said Amy. Marvin's face turned bright red. You got me
- 22:04this time, but we've got a whole summer, he said, smiling.
- 22:08I'll get you back. Suddenly, a familiar sound filled the air. Clink,
- 22:14Then a familiar voice called buckle up, everyone, We're off
- 22:18to Camp Mary Moose. It is impossible, said Amy, But
- 22:24it was possible. Madame Lulu had just stepped onto the bus. Hi,
- 22:31Madame Lulu, what are you doing here? Called Amy. I
- 22:34looked into my crystal ball. It said I would be
- 22:37going to a special place. And I am. I am
- 22:40the Camp Mary Moose drama counselor, exclaimed Madame Lulu. Wow,
- 22:47Amy whispered to Allie. She even tells us her own fortune. Okay,
- 22:53kids called the bus driver, we're on our way. The
- 22:58driver closed the door and started the motor. As soon
- 23:02as she did, some kids started to sing the Camp
- 23:04Mary Moose bust song. In no time, everyone was singing together,
- 23:10let's go, Let's go to Camp Mary Moose. It's time
- 23:13to have fun. Just to turn us loose. Our camp
- 23:16is the best. It beats all the rest. Suddenly, a
- 23:19paper airplane marked in flew toward Allie and Amy's heads.
- 23:24They each duck just in time. A few seconds later, clink, clink,
- 23:29Madame Lulu was swatting the airplane off her head. This
- 23:33summer is going to be so much fun, said Amy.
- 23:36We're going to need a new list of things to do,
- 23:39after all, said Ali. Ali took out paper and a pencil.
- 23:44Number one, learn to sell, she said. Number two, make
- 23:49things at arts and crafts, said Amy. Number three starr
- 23:53in Madame Lulu's play, said Ali. She stopped with her
- 23:57pencil in there. What else do you do at camp?
- 24:00She asked? I don't know, said Amy. How about this
- 24:04for number four, said Alie. She wrote in great big letters,
- 24:08have the best summer ever. That will be easy, said Amy.
- 24:13For us, said Alie, Because we're together, said Amy. Forever,
- 24:18said Alie, and they gave high fives as the bus
- 24:22bounced down the roads. Questions what makes a friendship special?
- 24:29Name three things that matter to you. If you went
- 24:32to see Madame Lulu, what would you ask her when
- 24:35you have an important question? Who's the person you go
- 24:38to It worked out great when Allie and Amy gave
- 24:41Marvin a chance to join them doing something fun. Is
- 24:46there someone you would like to get to know better,
- 24:50what would you invite the person to do? And what
- 24:54is your idea of the best summer ever. Well, that's
- 24:59all we have time for, so that concludes our Children's
- 25:02Story Hour for today. Please join us next time as
