Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: These flip flops from the right and the left need to stop
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, yesterday I had to chuckle after I interviewed Mr
- 0:03Speaker 1: Abercrombie from the PPTA who grudgingly accepted that improvements to
- 0:07Speaker 1: the education sector by the government is a factor in
- 0:10Speaker 1: teacher registrations being up 40% this year. He had a
- 0:14Speaker 1: wasp in his mouth saying, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's helped.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Mr Abercrombie, other industry advocates and the Labour-led opposition have
- 0:21Speaker 1: been dead set against many of the changes that Erica
- 0:24Speaker 1: Stanford's brought in, but now they are slowly admitting that
- 0:26Speaker 1: things are getting better. And it makes you wonder why
- 0:29Speaker 1: they were so negative from the get-go. And, of course,
- 0:31Speaker 1: we can only put this sort of thing down to tribalism.
- 0:34Speaker 1: If it's an idea from the right, it has to
- 0:36Speaker 1: be evil and wrong and bad for the kids and
- 0:38Speaker 1: the vulnerable. Now, I say this about the left, but
- 0:41Speaker 1: it's also a weakness for the right. The coalition spent
- 0:43Speaker 1: the first year merrily throwing out any initiatives that came
- 0:46Speaker 1: from the previous government, whether it was good or not.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The us-good-them-bad narrative is childish and expensive and slowing us down.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Three Waters. Sorry. But Three Waters was thrown out. But
- 0:59Speaker 1: it's been replaced with almost the same thing. The only
- 1:02Speaker 1: difference being it's voluntary and there's no governance. The upshot
- 1:05Speaker 1: is that we're even further behind in finding funds to
- 1:08Speaker 1: fix our water supply, which is the main problem. We
- 1:11Speaker 1: need to find the money. I could go on. The
- 1:13Speaker 1: cancelled ferries when the problem was actually the gold-plated ports.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's cost us time and money. Now, in the leaders'
- 1:20Speaker 1: debate the other day, Chris Hipkin's big mistake was to
- 1:24Speaker 1: threaten to throw out an hour of tuition of the
- 1:26Speaker 1: basics if they get in. a policy that is very
- 1:29Speaker 1: popular with parents. And even Mr Abercrombie from the PPTA
- 1:32Speaker 1: yesterday said it works. So why would Mr Hipkins want
- 1:35Speaker 1: to throw out something that works? Oh, it's because it
- 1:38Speaker 1: was an idea from the right. These flip-flops from both
- 1:42Speaker 1: sides are exhausting. And when National won the last election,
- 1:47Speaker 1: one phrase stuck in my mind. They said, ah, the
- 1:49Speaker 1: adults are back. Well, when is that actually going to happen?
