Latest / BREAK/FIX the Motorsports & Vehicle Enthusiast Variety Show / From Crab Shack to Ceramic Coatings: The Owner’s Pride Story
Transcript
- 0:00Break fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from
- 0:04all over the auto sphere, from wrench turners and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of petrol heads that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:27For over two decades and across two generations, owner's pride has
- 0:32been at the forefront of protection technology for all types of vehicles.
- 0:36Founded by detailers who have worked for, and within dealerships, body
- 0:40shops, and direct to consumer auto care studios, Owner's Pride has never
- 0:44stopped listening to their clients, which means they've never stopped
- 0:47innovating their products and services.
- 0:50With us to discuss the evolution and story behind Owner's Pride is Dan Williams.
- 0:54Partner and president of business development at owner's pride, as well as
- 0:59the host of the owner's pride podcast.
- 1:02And with that, let's welcome Dan to break fix.
- 1:05Hey, how are you guys doing?
- 1:06And joining me tonight is returning voice and co host of break fix.
- 1:11Don Wieberg from garage style magazine.
- 1:14Welcome back, Don.
- 1:15Thanks for having me back.
- 1:16Like all good break, fix stories.
- 1:18There is a superhero origin.
- 1:19So Dan, take us.
- 1:21Back in time, 20 plus years.
- 1:23And let's talk about the who, what, when, and where of owner's pride.
- 1:27How did this all get started?
- 1:28I was a waiter and I was in my early thirties.
- 1:31It just did not seem hip for me to go and be a manager in a restaurant.
- 1:35My family was really pushing me to do that.
- 1:37And I always had wanted a Rolex watch.
- 1:39However, working at Joe's Crab Shack, I could not afford a Rolex watch.
- 1:43So one of the catalysts that started my detailing business was to get this watch.
- 1:48And I realized within two months of starting this, and I was just
- 1:51doing it on my two days off a week from the restaurant, that I could
- 1:54indeed afford this Rolex watch.
- 1:56And this is literally the exact watch that I bought.
- 1:58And so it's always been a very big part point of pride for me and
- 2:02something that I'm really proud of and an accomplishment that I made.
- 2:05So you sound like you've been doing this for a long time.
- 2:07So when I first started, I would just go to like an auto zone or a Kmart or
- 2:11Walmart, or I think I might have just dated myself there and grab, you know,
- 2:14whatever they had off of the shelf.
- 2:16And it was what it was.
- 2:17My friend had a next door neighbor that had a mobile detailing
- 2:20business here in San Diego.
- 2:22And I just bought a new truck and he put a sealant on there for me.
- 2:25He actually let me ride along with him for a couple of days and took me to the store.
- 2:29When I started professionally detailing, it was all with Pro
- 2:32Products, Buford Pro, that company.
- 2:34And from there, I went to a Mobile Tech Expo, which is one
- 2:37of our industry trade shows.
- 2:39And this was probably in about 2007.
- 2:41I had gone to a seminar for Dr.
- 2:43Gadoosey, who is the CEO of a company called OptiCoat, which is
- 2:46where I used to work before here.
- 2:48And I told my two employees that I had with me, let's start a secondary
- 2:52business called SoCal Detail Supply.
- 2:54I still have that business to this day.
- 2:55We went in to become distributors for that company.
- 2:58When I was at OptiCoat, the company before here, and how I learned about
- 3:01all this stuff was the CEO of that company wanted a dealership F& I program.
- 3:06And all I could see was money signs when he talked about that.
- 3:09And so I headed up that project and what I did to build that program out
- 3:14was I noticed that they had industry trade shows for the F& I world.
- 3:17They have industry summit, agent summit, NADA.
- 3:21So I started asking for him to send me to these shows and I didn't
- 3:25know anybody in there or really anything about that industry.
- 3:28But what I would do is I would watch the speakers on stage.
- 3:32And in between sessions, I would go up to people that asked good questions
- 3:37of the speakers and I would say, Hey, you know, that point you made about
- 3:40blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 3:42And so I started meeting a lot of people in that industry.
- 3:45My second power play in there because I didn't know anybody I was from detailer
- 3:49world was I saw all the big swinging dicks in the room and I went up to
- 3:52those people over the course of every time I'd go to these shows and I'd be
- 3:55like, Hey, can I get a selfie with you?
- 3:56You then I'd start posting those on social media, which made it
- 3:59look like I was in cahoots with all the bigger people in the industry.
- 4:03And it worked out really well.
- 4:04Nice, great marketing there.
- 4:06I really focused on that line of products very hard until I made
- 4:10the switch over to this one.
- 4:12And the main founder partner of Owner's Pride, he's been in the
- 4:15business for about 27 years.
- 4:17He came from having a bumper repair and going to dealerships, doing
- 4:22that kind of work, mobile business.
- 4:23And in the last seven years, he has grown a detail shop in Omaha,
- 4:27Nebraska to gross a million dollars, have two managers, six employees.
- 4:31And then he's been able to take his time and focus on
- 4:33growing the secondary business.
- 4:34I was his rep when they decided they wanted to have their own chemical
- 4:39line and their own detailer program.
- 4:40They tapped me to come and be a part of it.
- 4:42We launched this company three weeks before COVID shut the world down.
- 4:46So it was a very scary trying time to start a brand new company, but we've just
- 4:51had exponential growth right through and the resiliency of the detailing industry.
- 4:56Amazing because most of the people that are detailing cars made more
- 4:59money over the past few years than they've made in their entire life.
- 5:02So that makes Owner's Pride, let's say about four years old
- 5:05as we're talking about it today.
- 5:07Yeah.
- 5:07With your extensive background in detailing and your co founder's background
- 5:11in detailing, were there certain products that were in your bucket?
- 5:14Things that you relied on that you went to?
- 5:17Did any of those spawn the keystone product at Owner's Pride?
- 5:20What was that thing that launched the brand?
- 5:23Detailers are very much shiny new object syndrome havers.
- 5:26So they're always wanting to jump to the next polish, the next rinseless wash, the
- 5:31next polisher, the next polishing pad.
- 5:33And the best piece of advice that was ever given to me in this industry
- 5:37was by Joe Fernandez, who owns Superior Shine in Covina, California.
- 5:41And he told me, find a company that you like the people, the
- 5:44products, and the culture, and make yourself the best you can with that.
- 5:47He had done that with himself, with Meguiar's.
- 5:50I would imagine he still uses that product to this day.
- 5:52I did that with Opti for my time there.
- 5:55And you know, now I'm definitely bleeding owner's pride.
- 5:57I start all my podcasts and I say my name is Dan E.
- 6:00Williams and the E stands for EcoWash, the drought tolerant, eco friendly way to wash
- 6:03your car with just a little bit of water.
- 6:05That's my favorite product.
- 6:06That's my jam.
- 6:07It's a rinseless wash.
- 6:08It's dilutable at 512 to 1.
- 6:10You can use it on the inside of your car, the outside of your car.
- 6:13It's pH 7, so it's not going to hurt anything.
- 6:15You can bring it in your house, use it on your floors, on your
- 6:18stainless steel appliances.
- 6:19So, so, so many things.
- 6:21So that's kind of one of the flagship things for me.
- 6:24But we put together a really synergetic line of detailing chemicals.
- 6:29Because they're all made by detailers.
- 6:31Well, not like the detailers are the elves making them.
- 6:33We have them produced, but we had a heavy hand in developing them.
- 6:37So we made them very dilutable, very concentrated.
- 6:40So for having them in your business with the detailing suppliers,
- 6:44these days, ceramic coatings are kind of the pinnacle of.
- 6:49Protection that somebody can get for their car.
- 6:51And we have a line of ceramic coatings that come with the industry's most
- 6:55compliant comprehensive warranty program.
- 6:57You mentioned a couple things.
- 6:59Ceramic coatings.
- 7:00Waxes, polishes, sealants, and now graphene.
- 7:03Can we dissect those a little bit?
- 7:05Can you tell us the difference?
- 7:06Because you see all these labels, you know, the shiny new thing on the shelf
- 7:09at the big box store or even online.
- 7:11What are you supposed to buy anymore?
- 7:13These days.
- 7:14The term ceramic has kind of been bastardized because you can't go
- 7:18through a drive through tunnel car wash or walk through a Walmart
- 7:21without seeing something ceramic.
- 7:23Everything is ceramic.
- 7:24In the big box stores, you've seen kind of a turnover in product,
- 7:27but you are seeing some newcomers.
- 7:29You go to an end cap of Walmart and suddenly everything is Chemical Brothers,
- 7:33and then you see Adams polishes, and then you see Jack's Wax, and then you
- 7:36see Jay Leno's Garage, to name a few.
- 7:39If you're going to sell your products on big box stores and shelves.
- 7:43You need to dilute that product down so people go through it really quick,
- 7:47and they come back and buy some more.
- 7:49Our products are very concentrated.
- 7:51Our EcoWatch is dilutable at 512 to 1.
- 7:54That's one little capful in three gallons of water.
- 7:57So that's one of the main differences.
- 7:58We say we have professional products without the professional problems.
- 8:02Everything is really concentrated and just ready to go.
- 8:05Ceramic is really a term to kind of cover the science behind all this.
- 8:10We think about ceramic, we think about our coffee mugs, We think about
- 8:13plates and vases and you're kind of thinking more of dinnerware than I'm
- 8:18putting ceramic on my car, right?
- 8:19You're not putting your car in a kiln.
- 8:21You're not baking it.
- 8:22We have two different kinds.
- 8:24We have a silicon carbide solvent based ceramic coating and that formulation
- 8:29is a ceramic that's inside of a solvent carrier that you put onto the surface.
- 8:34So you put it on your substrate on the paint in this scenario,
- 8:37all of the ceramic makes a silicon carbide cross link to the substrate.
- 8:41And then the solvent carrier just beads up on itself and you wipe that off.
- 8:45It's very easy to install.
- 8:47Some of the coatings are more of a resin based.
- 8:49Coating.
- 8:49A lot of times you might hear Tio O2 or SIO two, and those are gonna
- 8:53be some of the substitutes that are added into it or grafted onto
- 8:58the backbone of the, the chain.
- 9:00And those resin based coatings are more of a, if you were to think
- 9:04of a thin layer almost of honey that was spread over the surface.
- 9:08And inside of that layer, there's little nanoparticles of either
- 9:11the titanium or silicon dioxide.
- 9:13And that kind of a coating you wipe on, then you wait for it to
- 9:16flash, it kind of makes a rainbow, and then you chase high spots.
- 9:19Now we do have a coating that is that kind of coating that we
- 9:23have as a self healing coating.
- 9:24And by our three, five and seven year warrantied coatings
- 9:27are the solvent based coatings.
- 9:29And then I have O-P-X-O-P-X light that you can buy and do your own car with.
- 9:33And then OP select, which is our premium nine year warrantied self-healing
- 9:37ceramic coating out of that phrase and that hype around everybody suddenly
- 9:41had ceramics, then you had sealants.
- 9:44So what's the difference between a coating and a sealant?
- 9:46Before we move on to something even more complicated, like a
- 9:49graphene quote unquote shield.
- 9:51These are very interchangeable terms.
- 9:54Ceramic is more of a inorganic, more so than like a pottery piece.
- 9:59But I know that that's kind of what your brain just automatically goes to.
- 10:03We've tested with graphene coatings too and we've really
- 10:05not had very good results.
- 10:07I think one of the things with that kind of a coating is usually you'll see them
- 10:11in the liquid that the graphene particles will settle to the bottom and you have
- 10:15to shake it up which the chemistry of a solvent based coating or even a resin
- 10:20based coating is going to be superior to that because it's more cohesive and not
- 10:25something that you have to shake up that's not as interconnected to itself and a
- 10:30lot of the sealants like we have ceramic sealants They're just not as long lasting.
- 10:34Our ceramic detail spray, the pink sauce we call it, that is a very
- 10:38long lasting ceramic coating, and it's based on the same chemistry
- 10:41as our solvent based coatings.
- 10:43However, it's in a detail spray carrier form as the solvent, if you
- 10:46will, instead of the solvent itself.
- 10:48The missing link that a lot of people don't realize is how porous
- 10:52your clear coat and your paint really are at the end of the day.
- 10:54And when you look at the molecule size of these different chemicals that you're
- 10:59putting out there, whether the ceramics, the sealants, the graphenes, et cetera,
- 11:01they need to be able to Penetrate those pores in the paint, and that's how
- 11:05they bring back that luster and that feel and that look the science behind
- 11:08this is really, really interesting.
- 11:10And I think we take for granted to the old school thinking.
- 11:12I got my Meguiar's gold class paste and put it on with a
- 11:16sponge and it's thick as butter.
- 11:17And you're not really thinking about well, was that just sort of taking care of the
- 11:21surface or was it penetrating underneath?
- 11:23A really big misconception that a lot of people have, and I hear even
- 11:27detailers talking about this all the time, is that the paints now, with
- 11:30environmental restrictions on them, have become water based, and that they're a
- 11:34lot more fragile than they used to be.
- 11:36And I've spewed out this nonsense myself multiple times.
- 11:39I did a podcast interview with a guy from Sherwin Williams Autopaint, and
- 11:43I did one with two reps from PPG.
- 11:45And they really kind of set me straight on this whole thing.
- 11:47The color coat of the paint is indeed a waterborne paint now, but
- 11:52the clear coat is still a urethane, so it's really not any more tender.
- 11:56One of the things I also see detailers do that, it just drives me crazy,
- 12:01is they sell a ceramic coating as it'll stop rock chips and meteor
- 12:07strikes and car accident impacts.
- 12:09And it's really not like that.
- 12:11For the guys that say your paint is not gonna scratch, they're
- 12:14measured on a hardness scale, which is actually a pencil, a lead scale.
- 12:18Essentially, if you were to think when you were back in school and you were
- 12:21taking your little Scantron test and you had your number two pencil, they test
- 12:24as the lead number goes up, I believe it goes up to 10, that the lead is harder.
- 12:29So what they do is they take a substrate, the paint in this
- 12:32situation, and they put a load on it.
- 12:34And they drag it across until the lead is hard enough to scratch it.
- 12:38So a lot of the coatings will say that they're 9H and on a hardness scale.
- 12:43But they're kind of implying that it's on the Mohs scale, which
- 12:46is a mineral hardness scale.
- 12:47And that would be mosanite and diamond.
- 12:49First of all, none of the ceramic coatings are as hard as mosanite and diamond.
- 12:53Second, it's a very, very thin layer that's, you know, measured in microns.
- 12:59On top of a substrate that's about four on a pencil scale.
- 13:02So if you were to take a piece of tin and put it onto a sidewalk and
- 13:06step on it, you're going to kind of take on the characteristics of
- 13:08that cement that's underneath of it.
- 13:10But if you put that same piece of tin onto, say, some grass and walk
- 13:14on it, you're going to adopt the characteristics of the softer substrate.
- 13:18The reason that ceramic coatings don't get as much marring and scratching
- 13:22over time is because they release dirt easier and everything just
- 13:26kind of releases off of the paint.
- 13:28I'm glad that we're saying that in front of a lot of people because
- 13:31it really just drives me crazy and I think it sets a lot of people up
- 13:34for failure when they get a product like this and it is a costly product.
- 13:38And the care and maintenance of a ceramic coated or sealed vehicle is
- 13:41different than, let's say, your general wax or polish type of setup, right?
- 13:45I've heard of things like Ceramic crackers.
- 13:47You go back to the classic powder tide and that will break apart the quote
- 13:51unquote seal that the ceramic creates.
- 13:53Is that fact?
- 13:54Is that a myth?
- 13:54If you polish the car, it's going to remove the coating.
- 13:57That's the only way that these ceramic coatings come off is via abrasion.
- 14:01We're 15 plus years into ceramic coating.
- 14:03So there's a lot of great ceramic coatings out there.
- 14:05Well, one of the things about them is they're made to absorb impacts from
- 14:10acids and enzymes, you know, be it higher or lower on the pH scale, and to
- 14:15seal the paint up so the UV rays aren't fading it out and your color's dying.
- 14:19As far as washing the cars, the safest way to wash your car.
- 14:23Always is going to be to take it to your professional detailer and have them baby
- 14:26it for you That's like going to the salon and getting your nails and your hair done
- 14:30That's the way to go second is going to be to wash it yourself in your driveway with
- 14:34some owner's pride eco wash That's how I do my own and some ceramic detail spray.
- 14:38That's literally how I wash my own You see a lot of guys using either
- 14:42aerators or filters foamers, some sort of spray system for the soap.
- 14:45Does the eco wash sud up like that?
- 14:48Or is it more like a traditional soap?
- 14:49We have the only rinseless product that it's just jam packed with emulsifiers.
- 14:55So if you put it into a foam cannon at a little higher concentration,
- 14:58it actually does make a really thick foam that you can foam onto the car.
- 15:02And I believe it's the only rinseless watch that does that.
- 15:05I get my foam can and I put your product in it.
- 15:07I blast my car.
- 15:09I walk away?
- 15:10Well, then you're going to take something and wipe over it because the emulsifiers
- 15:14are going to loosen all the dirt and its foam is going to start dripping down.
- 15:17Take your towel and wipe it, then you can just dry the car off.
- 15:20Do you have a specific formulation as a wheel cleaner as well?
- 15:24I would use DeconX on my wheels.
- 15:26Traditionally, people have used like ammonium bifluoride
- 15:28acid on the wheels, which is a derivative of hydrofluoric acid.
- 15:32And it's really kind of dangerous.
- 15:34I've struggled with some arthritis problems myself.
- 15:37being it's not genetic necessarily.
- 15:38I think it's because in my younger days of detailing, I was a little
- 15:41bit willy nilly with the acid and that could possibly be a thing.
- 15:44So if you're going to use a stronger acid like that, then for goodness
- 15:48sakes, make sure that you wear something over your face and your eyes and your
- 15:51hands, but Decon X is going to be 6.
- 15:55and it's going to be very safe.
- 15:56Also, back in my detailing days, I could not tell you how many Mercedes
- 16:01brake calipers I stained with acid.
- 16:03DeconX will not do that.
- 16:04It's a definite contender for our next battle against brake dust
- 16:08competition that we do every year.
- 16:09The difference in the way we carry on that competition is we're using
- 16:13battle tested race wheels where the brake pad material is way more caustic
- 16:19than anything that's on the street.
- 16:20The wheels are running at higher temperatures, things like that.
- 16:22It oxidizes almost immediately.
- 16:24God forbid it rains.
- 16:25Because now you've got stuck, just baked onto those wheels.
- 16:28So it's really cool.
- 16:29Every time we get new products in, we battle them against our
- 16:32previous champions is up when there's been some surprise turnout.
- 16:35So I'm really looking forward to bringing in some deconnects and seeing
- 16:38how it does against a lot of the other products that we have stacked
- 16:41up for this year's competition.
- 16:42Well, gosh, I am too.
- 16:43So let's make sure that we get that in there.
- 16:45I did really kind of a fun experiment four or five months ago.
- 16:48I had seen somebody make a post that using the acid on the brakes
- 16:52itself would deteriorate the brake pads and the metal on that.
- 16:57So what I did is I went to the auto parts store and I bought some little motorcycle
- 17:01brake pads because I just wanted something cheap because I was going to do a test.
- 17:03And I took one glass Pyrex dish with some decon X in it and I put it in
- 17:08there and it indeed turned purple.
- 17:10And then I took ammonium bifluoride and I put the other Brake pad in there kind
- 17:13of wore all the paint off of the brake pad that had the ammonium bifluoride
- 17:17side, but it did not degrade it.
- 17:19Like I thought it was going to, I really thought that the brake
- 17:22pad itself would start to crumble.
- 17:24And I left that in there soaking for a week.
- 17:26What happens when you apply heat?
- 17:28That's an experiment for another day.
- 17:31I would pass off on saying, I would say go to a touchless car wash.
- 17:36Because a lot of times if you go through the tunnel car wash with the brushes,
- 17:39even though they use almost like a wetsuit material now, and it's not like
- 17:42old school nylon brushes, but still stuff can get in those and it can mar
- 17:46your paint a little bit more over time.
- 17:48You have products as well for marine and aerospace, which is very, very cool.
- 17:52But for a novice or just starting to try OP, What would be a good starter set?
- 17:57Let's just say, okay, I'm a mother's man, or I'm a McGuire's guy.
- 18:00I want to try OP.
- 18:02I want to take a walk on the wild side.
- 18:04Dan, what would you say?
- 18:05Okay, Don, I want you to use this, this, and this first.
- 18:08Just try this.
- 18:09What would be your starter kit?
- 18:11I often say on my podcast, if I was stranded on a desert island with my
- 18:15car and only two products, it would be eco wash and ceramic detailer.
- 18:19I would be lonely, but my car would be on point.
- 18:22So that's answer number one.
- 18:23That's literally what I use to wash my own cars.
- 18:26Fantastic.
- 18:27I can't express my love for EcoWash enough, but it's real.
- 18:29It's real.
- 18:30And then if you wanted to like really try our products, we currently have a
- 18:34sale right now on like a box kit that has seven products in it and it has everything
- 18:38that you need to take care of your car.
- 18:40And I've kind of mentioned this before, we have the only compliant
- 18:44comprehensive written express warranty in the detail aftermarket.
- 18:48And because of that, we have to follow a little bit of rules that a lot of
- 18:52companies can duck under because we have this compliant warranty program.
- 18:55So your products are backed by a seven year warranty.
- 18:58Is that right?
- 18:58We have a three year, five year, seven year, and nine year warranty program.
- 19:03So you have different tiers for it.
- 19:05Yes.
- 19:06And then for RVs and boats, we have a five year warranty program.
- 19:10Same we have for power sports.
- 19:11We can put a warranty on a side by side or a snowmobile.
- 19:15We have a paint protection film warranty that we're getting ready
- 19:17to launch very soon, and it'll come out with our paint protection film.
- 19:21And that will cover any road debris that comes up and strikes the vehicle,
- 19:24breaks through the paint protection film.
- 19:26Damages to paint will pay up to 2, 500 to pull the film off, retouch
- 19:30up the panel and refilm the car.
- 19:32I'm going to take my car.
- 19:33I'm going to take your product, slap it on my car.
- 19:35The warranty is in place.
- 19:37How do you know I applied it properly?
- 19:39Tell us about the warranty and how it works.
- 19:41What does it take to accidentally deactivate the warranty?
- 19:44What does it take to activate the warranty?
- 19:46So only the warranties can be sold through our authorized installer network,
- 19:50and we have about 350 in the United States authorized installers right now.
- 19:54And once they do it, they input it into our portal system and you have an actual
- 19:59hard card that is the warranty itself.
- 20:02And being that it's a compliant warranty, it has things listed on there because
- 20:05it's a written express warranty.
- 20:06It really lists everything that's covered, everything that's not covered.
- 20:10An insurance company who backs it, 1 800 number to call in case
- 20:13you have any warranty claim.
- 20:15An aggregate that you're working towards if you have any warranty claims.
- 20:18And here's what's really, really cool about it.
- 20:20What gives me a lot of confidence.
- 20:22If you were, say, in Florida, and you got your ceramic coating from somebody
- 20:26in Florida, and that detailer went out of business, what are you going to do?
- 20:30Well, with Owner's Pride, you're going to call this 1 800 number,
- 20:32and we're going to take care of you.
- 20:34What if owner's pride went out of business?
- 20:36It happens.
- 20:37Businesses do go out of business.
- 20:38Well, even if we went out of business, we have an insurance company
- 20:41that backs all of our warranties.
- 20:43So you're going to call 1 800 number.
- 20:45You're going to get taken care of.
- 20:46Here's another scenario that people don't really think about.
- 20:48What if you get your job done in Florida and you move to the middle of
- 20:52Montana and there's not an owner's pride installer for 500 miles in any direction?
- 20:56Well, I think you guys see where this is going.
- 20:58You're going to call that 1 800 number and we're going to find
- 20:59somebody to take care of you.
- 21:01The guarantee is really, really cool today.
- 21:03Like you're saying, I don't think I've ever heard of that before
- 21:05from a wax and polish company.
- 21:07But how do you guarantee them for that long when most waxes only last
- 21:11three to six months on the outside?
- 21:13How are you guaranteeing it for that long?
- 21:15And what do I need to do to make sure I don't void what you've done?
- 21:19A wax and a sealant, that's a lesser time of a product that goes on a car.
- 21:24Like if you think of a wax, when it gets hot, it just kind of melts like a candle.
- 21:28So that kind of technology doesn't stay as long.
- 21:31A ceramic coating is just a much longer lasting, because it actually makes a
- 21:35chemical cross link to the substrate.
- 21:37As far as the warranty itself, because it's a compliant warranty, there's
- 21:42really not a whole bunch of hiccups in there that are going to get you.
- 21:45We know that there's going to be a one to three percent warranty rate claim.
- 21:49That's just kind of the industry standard, and we're going to pay some of them out.
- 21:52As a matter of fact, if there's a company that is selling a warranty, and some of
- 21:56them do use the word warranty, if they were to switch it over and use the word
- 21:58guarantee, like you're saying, that would make them absolutely compliant and okay.
- 22:02But the word warranty comes with a different set of rules.
- 22:05But really the only things that would mess you up in there, again, if you have
- 22:09damage on the car, I believe it gives you 60 days of noticing the damage that
- 22:13they want you to report that now there's really no way that if it was a hundred
- 22:17days, they would, nobody would ever really know, but it's on there for that.
- 22:20But there's not a whole bunch of gitches because it's an actual compliant warranty.
- 22:24We're really trying to do business a little bit different.
- 22:26We're really talking about ceramic coating.
- 22:28We're not talking about waxes.
- 22:29Correct.
- 22:30And as a matter of fact, we don't even have a wax.
- 22:32I literally have not one single wax product in our line.
- 22:36Let's go back to what you were saying though.
- 22:37You ceramic coat a car, the customer goes out two, three months later,
- 22:41four months later, whatever, either the owner or they hire someone, a
- 22:44detailer to polish it, wax it, bam.
- 22:48They've just pulled your ceramic coating off there.
- 22:50Now the ceramic coat is gone.
- 22:52They call you for a warranty.
- 22:54How do you know that it was polished and removed?
- 22:57We'd never know.
- 22:58We would just pay it out and move on.
- 22:59No kidding.
- 23:00Yeah.
- 23:00And when you say pay it out, do you mean reapply it or give a refund
- 23:04or whatever the customer wants?
- 23:06Every warranty that we have has an aggregate.
- 23:08So say our seven year warranty has a 4, 000 aggregate.
- 23:11We're the only company that actually would compensate the
- 23:14detail shop who is doing the repair.
- 23:17We'll pay them a 70 an hour labor rate to do any repair plus give them product.
- 23:21And the customer will get whatever problem they have taken care of.
- 23:24Very nice.
- 23:25So like a car warranty, where you have to take it in for scheduled
- 23:28maintenance and things like that.
- 23:30Do you have to do the same thing for the owner's pride products?
- 23:32Do you have to have it reapplied to basically stay within spec?
- 23:36In the Magnuson Moss Act and the federal trade commission who regulate warranty
- 23:41sales in the United States, you can't tell somebody if they pay for a warranty for
- 23:45a ceramic coating, that they have to do anything that's like out of the ordinary.
- 23:49or extraordinary to maintain it or their warranty will go to waste.
- 23:53And some companies do indeed say, if you go through a tunnel carwash,
- 23:56that it'll avoid your warranty, or if you don't come back and give
- 23:58them money to do a reapplication once a year, legally can't do that.
- 24:02It's kind of the wild, wild West out here in the world of detailing though.
- 24:05Once you sell somebody a warranty in the United States, you cannot
- 24:09legally ask them for more money to keep that warranty in force.
- 24:13Once you have it, you have it, Dan, looking over your website.
- 24:15There are a lot of products with unique names, slick, OPX light,
- 24:20Deacon X spotless superwash.
- 24:23Look, I was a valet and a bouncer for years.
- 24:25And I'll tell you something.
- 24:26A lot of the guys I work with had names just like this.
- 24:29Okay.
- 24:31But a lot of them, when you get into them, they sound very similar to each other.
- 24:35You could read everything about what the differences are, but what are some of
- 24:38the differences highlight us on that?
- 24:40Product like slick ceramic detailer and ceramic plus are all sealants.
- 24:45They have a little bit of ceramic component to them.
- 24:48We use ceramic plus mostly as a drying aid.
- 24:50A lot of people, when I say we use a drying aid, they're like, I have a towel,
- 24:53buddy, what do I need a drying aid for?
- 24:56And there's a great answer for that.
- 24:57So if you've ever like dried off a, maybe a dark colored SUV or a big vehicle, and
- 25:01by the time you get all the way around it, you got to go back around with the detail
- 25:04spray and catch all the snail trails.
- 25:06While the car is still wet, put a shot onto the panel and
- 25:08just dry it off as you go.
- 25:10It makes a nice little glow on the paint and you don't have to go back.
- 25:13So it does make you more efficient.
- 25:15Slick is a ceramic detail spray, and then so is ceramic detailer.
- 25:19The difference in those is about four percent.
- 25:2040 in price for a 16 ounce bottle.
- 25:23The difference is the amount of the raw ceramic material.
- 25:26There's a whole bunch in that pink sauce.
- 25:28Some of those bottles are the size of a thumb and you're
- 25:32looking at like 40, 50 bucks.
- 25:34I mean, it was pricey to say the least.
- 25:36So that little bottle does not look like it would get around my entire vehicle.
- 25:40This one little bottle, because it's just this really thin layer of ceramic
- 25:44coating that goes on your paint.
- 25:45This is enough to do a big old SUV.
- 25:4629 milliliters or 1 ounce.
- 25:48No kidding.
- 25:49How do you do that?
- 25:50How do you take that and apply it all over?
- 25:52Let's just take a Range Rover.
- 25:53We use an applicator pad.
- 25:55Okay.
- 25:56That's a sponge wrapped in some sort of cloth and like a microfiber kind of cloth.
- 26:00You just put a nice wet layer onto the side of it and then
- 26:03just rub it onto the paint.
- 26:05And like with the three, five and seven, these solvent based
- 26:07coatings, again, it's just lay it wet and let it sweat technology.
- 26:10No kidding.
- 26:11Some of our self healing coatings are a little bit more tricky because
- 26:14they're a lot thicker and it's a very different application, but
- 26:17all of those are not DIY products.
- 26:19Those are to be installed by a professional, right?
- 26:22Yeah, and I do have a couple of DIY ceramic coating products, which is my OPX
- 26:28light, which is the self healing coating.
- 26:30And that's a solid two year coating on the consumer level.
- 26:32But the tricky part when somebody does their own car is getting all
- 26:36of the prep work done prior to putting the ceramic coating on.
- 26:39That's where all of the hard work.
- 26:41The coating itself, not that tough, but typically to put ceramic coating on a
- 26:46car, we're going to decontaminate the car, both mechanically and chemically.
- 26:49So we're going to get the car wet and wash it.
- 26:51Whether you use eco wash and don't rinse it at all, or you use traditional, get
- 26:55it wet with a hose and rub some soap suds around on it and then rinse it.
- 26:58After that, we take our DeconX product and DeconX is a thiol base.
- 27:03Thiol is a derivative of sulfur.
- 27:05So it stinks.
- 27:06It smells like farts, cherries, and feets.
- 27:08It's pretty stinky and money because it's a really cool product.
- 27:11But what it does is you mist it onto the car and it attacks all
- 27:15of the ferrous oxides that are embedded into your clear coat.
- 27:18So if you were to think about you're driving your car down the street and you
- 27:21hit the brakes and it smashes against those calipers and then brake dust
- 27:25forms, this vacuum is behind your car.
- 27:27You stop and all the dust.
- 27:29Falls down onto your car and then it just embeds in your clear coat.
- 27:32And some people, I don't know if you've ever done this, but if you feel
- 27:35your paint and it feels like it has bumps, it feels like you're reading
- 27:38a Helen Keller novel, that's fallout that's embedded in the clear coat.
- 27:41Decon X just melts it away.
- 27:43So as soon as it hits it, it starts turning red.
- 27:45It just makes it look like the car's bleeding.
- 27:48We use that in tandem with a clay towel or a clay bar.
- 27:51A clay bar or a clay towel will shear all of the fallout off.
- 27:55So if these little nubs on my fingers were pieces of fallout, it's going
- 27:59to kind of shear everything off.
- 28:00But you'll still have the stuff that's in the pores, kind of
- 28:02like the pores of your skin.
- 28:04So if you use it in tandem with the DeConX, you're shearing everything off
- 28:07and you're melting it out of the pores and getting your paint as bare as possible,
- 28:10even prior to polishing it, before you put a ceramic coating on it, is imperative.
- 28:14So after that step, we'd rinse that off, and even though it's stinky and it turns
- 28:18color like that, it's pH of like 6.
- 28:217 to 7.
- 28:223, so it's very neutral, you're not gonna do any damage to anything with it.
- 28:25Also works great for wheels.
- 28:27You see like a lot of, especially the European cars, they throw off so much
- 28:31brake dust and they just turn black.
- 28:33Well, this'll do the same thing with that and just kind of turn
- 28:35red and dissolve it all off.
- 28:37Use a little brush on there.
- 28:38Looking good.
- 28:39Looking good.
- 28:40So the next thing I do is I rinse the car off and then you're
- 28:42going to want to use spotless.
- 28:44Spotless is a very light acid and that is a mineral deposit remover.
- 28:48If we think of the scenario, maybe you don't have big chunky
- 28:51water spots all over your car.
- 28:53But, in that scenario that we talked about a little bit ago where we dried
- 28:57the car off with just a towel and we had water remnants on there, over time, if
- 29:01that's how you're washing and drying your car, you can really build up minerals
- 29:05on the outside that you can't even see.
- 29:06And I would argue before I polish a car, I want to make sure that I get
- 29:10all of the metal pieces off so they don't get stuck in my polishing pad and
- 29:14my compound, as well as any minerals that are on there, because I don't
- 29:17want those to be mixed in either.
- 29:19You can schmutz it around with a brush or just let it dwell and then rinse that off.
- 29:23And then the last step that you're going to do before polishing a car
- 29:26is if there's any oily or greasy dirt or anything like that on there, we're
- 29:31going to use some of our Grime or Clean.
- 29:33Grime is a heavy duty degreaser, so if you have a big road tar or something
- 29:37on there, it'll move that off.
- 29:38And Clean is about 11 on the pH scale and it's an all purpose cleaner.
- 29:41I would rinse that part off too, dry the car off, now you're ready to polish.
- 29:45So do you guys carry a polisher?
- 29:47Do you have a mid size?
- 29:48step before you go to the coding.
- 29:50Oh yeah.
- 29:50Oh yeah.
- 29:51So what we have is owner's pride compound and we've kind of simplified the process.
- 29:54A lot of things that we look at is trying to make everybody efficient
- 29:58and profitable and run a business as well as protect the cars.
- 30:02Owner's pride compound is a one step.
- 30:04All in one compound and polish.
- 30:06So it's pad dependent.
- 30:07So you can use it with our foam cutting pad or our foamed wool pad, and you're
- 30:11going to get a lot of cut the maroon pad.
- 30:14You can do a lot of cars on a one step, some of the darker color vehicles.
- 30:18You're going to have to do a second with a softer pad, but the cool thing
- 30:21that makes it so efficient is you don't even have to wipe the compound.
- 30:24off of the car, you know, use one pad, then switch pads, use a
- 30:28little more product and go right over it with all these steps.
- 30:31This is why we probably just want to hire somebody like you or one of
- 30:34your people to take care of the car.
- 30:35Cause it sounds like the days of dishwash, soap and turtle wax are over.
- 30:39Yeah.
- 30:39And that's what I was hoping that we would highlight.
- 30:42Like we do have the products and for those.
- 30:44Auto enthusiasts who love doing their stuff.
- 30:46This would be really great.
- 30:47As a matter of fact, we do training classes.
- 30:49You can call our 1 800 number and I'll walk you through it.
- 30:52If you're a consumer, I absolutely love talking about this stuff.
- 30:55I do it all day long, but as far as ceramic coating the car,
- 30:59there's a lot that goes into it.
- 31:01And not only that, Don, back when you were polishing cars with your
- 31:04DuPont number seven, you were using a rotary polisher and a wool pad.
- 31:08I already know the answer to this because that's what they had then.
- 31:10Right?
- 31:11He's like Mr.
- 31:12Miyagi.
- 31:13Oh, those old rubbing compounds.
- 31:15gotcha.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:16I was raised up in the day when you used a polisher and the compound or
- 31:20polish, whatever you're using, you had this very, very high chance that
- 31:24you were going to burn the paint.
- 31:25Back then the paints weren't as good as they are.
- 31:28Say what you will about water based paint.
- 31:30Honestly, I see no trouble with them.
- 31:31I really don't, but yeah, those machines were so fast and they were so powerful.
- 31:37They would just burn right through the paint.
- 31:38So I never trusted myself with one and I never trusted those machines.
- 31:42So yeah, I basically young, dumb and all muscle, no brains.
- 31:47Let's just.
- 31:47Polish it out and we got it done.
- 31:49It wasn't until years later that I literally was taught how to use a
- 31:53buffer by the McFlyers wax company of all people, they literally
- 31:56brought me in to do a photo shoot.
- 31:57And okay, Don, let's get the buffer.
- 31:59Oh God, do we have to use a buffer?
- 32:01Oh, how do you do it?
- 32:02My hands, you know, right here.
- 32:04And, oh, no, no, no, come on, we'll show you how to use a buffer.
- 32:07You're never going to burn paint with this buffer.
- 32:08It's a brand new type of buffer.
- 32:10Oh, really?
- 32:11And yeah, they showed me that buffer technology, like
- 32:13everything else, had evolved.
- 32:15And that was what gave me the confidence.
- 32:16You know, Don's not alone in this camp.
- 32:18And he found out recently that I still don't use a buffer, and
- 32:21went out of his way to get me one.
- 32:23And then I got to learn how to use it.
- 32:24But I still do it the old fashioned way, but I also grew up and still
- 32:28use products that require that more genteel approach where it's
- 32:32like, you need to do it by hand.
- 32:34You need to spend time with the car.
- 32:35It is a system.
- 32:36They do work together.
- 32:37Things like that.
- 32:38My fear too is with some of these other products is man, the minute I
- 32:41put the buffer on there, I'm going to end up burning the paint or someone
- 32:44to have some sort of adverse reaction.
- 32:45So it's sort of like, I learned how to do it a certain way and
- 32:47it works and it comes out great.
- 32:49So I'm going to keep doing in that way till maybe I switched
- 32:51to a different product.
- 32:52You guys are.
- 32:52Fun.
- 32:53This is just a fun conversation.
- 32:55My gosh.
- 32:55Okay.
- 32:56Polishers.
- 32:57So back then we had rotary polishers, right?
- 33:00And you're right.
- 33:00Those are more dangerous of a polisher because it's just going in a forced
- 33:04rotation and it creates a lot of heat.
- 33:06You sit in one spot for too long.
- 33:08You could burn right through there.
- 33:09Also body shops.
- 33:11They still use those predominantly.
- 33:12So they'll do a body repair.
- 33:14They put paint on the car.
- 33:15They use their 3m in the purple bottle, which just.
- 33:19Fills everything and it looks magical when you leave the body shop, wash
- 33:23the car twice, and it looks like a tiger stripes all over the car.
- 33:26And those are called holograms.
- 33:28Your paint is supposed to be a very flat surface.
- 33:30So if that polisher head gets turned up to the side and it's
- 33:33kind of cutting a little divot.
- 33:35And so as you move your head around in the sun, that's what those are.
- 33:38But gosh, they've come a long ways with polishers.
- 33:41Now, when I started there was Porter cable was kind of upgrade and
- 33:46there was something called cyclo.
- 33:47So the cyclo is the two little pads.
- 33:50They made those for polishing aluminum trailers originally back in the, I
- 33:54believe the late fifties, then the Porter cable came into play as an orbital
- 34:00polisher, I think it's like 24 is the model and it's a little sander, but
- 34:06it has about a seven millimeter throw.
- 34:08So it has a very small throw.
- 34:10I bought a Fez tool, R O F E Q one 50, which is both a forced rotation.
- 34:16And an orbital.
- 34:17Later Flex came out with a similar polisher that's a lot
- 34:21more known in our industry.
- 34:22Woodworking tools.
- 34:23But that Fez tool is an army tank, I'll tell you what.
- 34:25That is a really cool machine that I have.
- 34:27Fast forward a little bit more.
- 34:29Jason Rose was one of the big people from Aquires.
- 34:31I don't know if that's who taught you to polish, but he's at Rupes now.
- 34:34I'm doing a training class with him in Colorado in a couple months.
- 34:38Yeah, they have a beautiful facility up there.
- 34:40They came out with like a really big game changer in the entire world of polishing.
- 34:44The 21 millimeter long throw polisher.
- 34:47So now it's not a forced rotation, but that orbit is 21 millimeters, which
- 34:53really has a lot more travel and you can get a lot more correction done.
- 34:58And it's a lot safer.
- 34:59I venture a guess you could put that polisher in a brand new person's hand.
- 35:04And, you know, as long as they don't have something that they're going to
- 35:06run into or go over trim, maybe really anybody could polish for that thing.
- 35:09It's really, really nice.
- 35:11And you've got to try to hurt the paint with it.
- 35:13As we've talked about the evolution, not only of polishers and equipment
- 35:17and gear, but the chemicals themselves, we're also starting to see an evolution.
- 35:21In the way we paint cars, and there's one company in particular that is taking a
- 35:26step completely away from paint and going to wrapped cars from the factory, and
- 35:30you're seeing more and more wrapped cars on the road because of the porous nature
- 35:35of paint, which we already understand.
- 35:37Wrap is even worse.
- 35:38Then you get a chemical that gets underneath of it, maybe
- 35:41starts messing with adhesive.
- 35:42Has owners probably taken into account wrapped cars?
- 35:45Have you developed products specifically for them?
- 35:48And again, your warranty, because wraps are so much more sensitive than paint is.
- 35:53We don't sell a vinyl wrap product ourself, so we certainly
- 35:58couldn't put a warranty on it.
- 35:59Plus, I don't think other than whatever comes from the manufacturer
- 36:02of those is going to be viable.
- 36:04If I had a car that was vinyl wrapped, instead of putting a ceramic coating on
- 36:08it, I would just wash it regularly and use some of the ceramic detail spray
- 36:12and you would be really good and protect and just use it every time you wash it.
- 36:16So you can use a ceramic coating on Yeah, you can.
- 36:20I've seen a lot of guys put it on like rally stripes on some of the cars, you
- 36:24know Even like a matte finish it doesn't add an extreme gloss to it It just keeps
- 36:28a nice sheen maybe makes it a little bit darker in color a little bit richer But
- 36:32it does still offer some protection on there for you It offers some UV protection
- 36:36from fading and a lot of other things I was alluding to the one manufacturer
- 36:40that is now starting to wrap their cars from the factory and that's the Tesla.
- 36:43And so that invites us into a conversation about EVs.
- 36:46And both Don and I have heard that there are some unique properties to
- 36:50EVs, especially non hybrid pure EV vehicles, where they're actually doing
- 36:55some advanced body and chassis grounding.
- 36:58And so it has these interesting ionization properties where people
- 37:02are claiming that wax actually doesn't adhere to the bodies of these EVs.
- 37:07So I'm wondering there, Have you come across this?
- 37:10Is this myth?
- 37:10Is this fact?
- 37:11Are there challenges with EVs, especially with the owner's pride products?
- 37:15I've not heard anything about this.
- 37:17Kind of makes me think of like, if you have a boat that's sitting
- 37:20out in the ocean, you have that chunk of zinc that sits on the
- 37:22back of it, you know, in the water.
- 37:24But I, I don't really know.
- 37:25I've got, I haven't seen any Teslas.
- 37:27Clang it around a chunk of zinc behind it.
- 37:30It would be a good solution though, wouldn't it?
- 37:32Now that you mentioned it, we've myth busted that.
- 37:36Thank you, Dan.
- 37:36I have heard however, on airplanes, because we have some guys that do
- 37:40airplanes and I have heard that there are some components on an airplane
- 37:44that you don't want to put coding on.
- 37:47I have never coded an airplane personally, never even actually been
- 37:50involved in detailing of an airplane.
- 37:52So I don't know that.
- 37:53And as far as a wax sticking on some kind of a surface.
- 37:56I would imagine it's going to sit on top of a surface until it melts off.
- 38:00It doesn't just magically get pushed off.
- 38:02I wouldn't think.
- 38:03I wouldn't think.
- 38:04But I think a ceramic coating is going to be superior over a wax every time.
- 38:09And it's an interesting dilemma that Tesla is specifically faced with, because
- 38:12as we know, they've had issues where the paint is literally falling off the cars,
- 38:16which is why they're going to wraps.
- 38:17And you know, there is a cheaper side to that from a cost perspective too.
- 38:22I mean, there's a lot of speculation of what the heck is really going
- 38:24on, It does lend itself to a very interesting question about, well,
- 38:28do other EVs suffer these problems?
- 38:30You know, what are we faced with now as we're starting to
- 38:33change the way cars are built?
- 38:34And the paints of today, as you already said, are different than the lacquer
- 38:38paints of a Packard of the 1930s.
- 38:40I mean, those paints will stand the test of time, and then some.
- 38:43So, It's really interesting how all this is changing and playing out.
- 38:47And then, okay, Elon.
- 38:48So he wants to be putting wraps on cars for goodness sakes.
- 38:51Now he brings out his truck and it's like you're DeLorean.
- 38:53It's a, you know, all stainless steel.
- 38:55You guys are going to have to make a product for that.
- 38:57I know.
- 38:58I mean, obviously the end caps of a DeLorean are a
- 39:01urethane product with paint.
- 39:02I mean, honestly, DeLorean people for the most part use household products.
- 39:06They use Bar Keeper's Friend is one of the biggest ones that
- 39:09they grain the DeLorean with it.
- 39:11There's one guy out there who uses.
- 39:13Pledge of all things.
- 39:15He literally grabs his pledge and sprays it on there and he wipes with
- 39:19the grain and he says, it looks great.
- 39:21The trouble with him is he'll pledge up his car wherever we meet.
- 39:24And then we go to destination B and by destination B, his car is just completely.
- 39:31Slathered in dirt and dust and grime because that pledge of
- 39:35just attracting everything to it.
- 39:36I guess at least it smells lemony fresh.
- 39:42Yes, that's true, but we try to avoid lemon references to DeLoreans.
- 39:47We try to get away from that, you know, we have enough problems already.
- 39:50This is an interesting dilemma.
- 39:51It maybe wasn't a big deal 40 years ago, but If Cybertrucks are going to
- 39:55be as popular as people think they are, now we got an issue of carrying and
- 39:59feeding for a stainless steel finish.
- 40:01But is there anything you recommend either from your product line that
- 40:05would be good or the stainless that maybe we don't know about?
- 40:08My wife uses EcoWash on our stainless steel appliances and
- 40:11it works really, really great.
- 40:12So I'm going to say EcoWash for one.
- 40:14Number two, What the heck do you put on a stainless steel?
- 40:18That's a great question.
- 40:19I had an interview with Carlotta Champagne and she was talking about hers and I
- 40:23think she said that she uses oven cleaner.
- 40:25Yeah.
- 40:25And I just saw a really interesting discussion about this in a detail forum
- 40:29and they were talking about because these things are stainless steel,
- 40:32it's such a hard metal, we have a metal coating and I don't really know
- 40:36how viable it'll be if it can really grab onto that really hard surface.
- 40:41Maybe paint protection film is the way to go on these things.
- 40:43So you're basically wrapping it at that point.
- 40:45Yeah.
- 40:46You know, what's interesting is I think the stainless steel of the DeLorean 40
- 40:49years ago is a different caliber and quality of stainless steel of what's
- 40:53being put out today, because I've been around Don's car, I've driven his car.
- 40:57You know, we were.
- 40:57Tooling around and hooning in it, but the difference is that when you would
- 41:01open and close the doors, you touch it.
- 41:03It didn't have that marring effect.
- 41:05It didn't leave a lot of handprints.
- 41:06You know, you look at a modern appliance in your kitchen and the minute you touch
- 41:10your dishwasher, my hands weren't dirty.
- 41:12Why does it look like this?
- 41:13And so people are saying the same thing about the quality of the
- 41:16stainless on the cyber trucks.
- 41:17The ones that are running around the day one additions that are out there.
- 41:20What we really need is that anti marring, anti fingerprint protection more than
- 41:25anything, because stainless clean, dirty, or otherwise, it's really hard to tell.
- 41:30I'll tell you one product that everybody wants, or they try to get
- 41:34from their appliance cleaning stuff.
- 41:36Are those little wipes that come out of the plastic baggie?
- 41:40My God, we could sell those all day long to DeLorean people because
- 41:43then they've got their little wipe.
- 41:44They just wipe it and they're done.
- 41:46They throw away the little cloth versus, Oh my God, I gotta pull out the Windex.
- 41:49I gotta pull out the paper towels.
- 41:51I gotta make sure the graining is right.
- 41:52If some company out there would develop that, I guarantee
- 41:55it would sell pretty well.
- 41:56Especially, like I say, with Cybertruck coming out, if it's
- 41:59really stainless, yeah, you're going to have more interest in it.
- 42:02Writing down the note right now.
- 42:04Yeah, I see that.
- 42:05Yeah.
- 42:05One thing I was wondering, Dan, coming from a detailing background, OP offers
- 42:10the opportunity to become an installer.
- 42:12Tell us about that.
- 42:13How do we become an OP pro?
- 42:15We have a network of authorized installers to become an installer.
- 42:18You have to have a business license and insurance, you know, be running
- 42:21a legitimate business because we're selling a compliant warranty program.
- 42:24We reach out and Have a phone interview, get a feel for what
- 42:28they need and what they're looking for and what problems they'd had
- 42:31before and see how we can fix it.
- 42:33And if we're a good fit, if it's a good fit, both ways, they have to buy a
- 42:36starter kit and they get listed on our installer map and they have a private
- 42:40group and we offer business coaching.
- 42:43Inside of our network, which is really cool.
- 42:46You obviously wear many hats at owner's pride and one of your other jobs is
- 42:50the host of the Owner's Pride podcast.
- 42:52Now tell me, for those of us that are hearing about this for the
- 42:54first time, is this show just about like waxes and polishing?
- 42:58Like are you going off the deep end talking about this kinda stuff
- 43:00or what's the show all about?
- 43:02So with Owners Pride podcast, and I've been doing a podcast
- 43:06essentially since about 2017.
- 43:07When I came to this company, they wanted me to do one here
- 43:10as well, instead of just.
- 43:12Being four detailers and like staying in a really small niche group.
- 43:16I have a lot of connections to people and I I'm able to bring in,
- 43:21you know, I've had Alan Sir, Jr.
- 43:23On Paul Page, who's the voice of the new 500.
- 43:25I've had Mike Michalowicz, Joey Coleman, Marcus Sheridan.
- 43:29These are all authors.
- 43:30A couple of Playboy models have been on here that have
- 43:32really neat car collections.
- 43:33So we've kind of expanded and opened this thing into more of
- 43:37all things, auto enthusiasts.
- 43:39The reason that we do that is we can touch different people and it puts our name
- 43:44and brand right in front of their face.
- 43:45Gosh, stories of people who are successful and have done really
- 43:49great things or written great books.
- 43:50They're just incredible guests to have.
- 43:52Well, then we'll treat this as an unofficial crossover and maybe
- 43:55you'll see us on one of the Owner's Pride episodes in the future.
- 43:58Oh my goodness.
- 43:59Absolutely.
- 44:00I would love to have that happen.
- 44:02When we look at this, this movie, Long journey that you've had in the world of
- 44:06detailing and now with owner's pride and the business development side of things
- 44:09and the podcast and everything's going on.
- 44:11You got a pretty full plate.
- 44:12So what's next, Dan?
- 44:14What's next for you?
- 44:15What's next for owner's pride?
- 44:16Anything you could share with us?
- 44:18Some spoilers maybe?
- 44:19I've been working really hard on building a structured coaching
- 44:23program in owner's pride.
- 44:25And um, I got certified with Mike Michalowicz fix this next.
- 44:28It's just such a great system.
- 44:30And all of the people who do coaching in our space, kind of like the podcast,
- 44:34they do it in a group where you maybe watch videos or you go to a group thing.
- 44:39And they're really just pushing marketing stuff and trying to take people's money.
- 44:42You know, we charge a very fair price.
- 44:44And what we do is we use a tool to assess.
- 44:47And find the most vital need of a company.
- 44:49And then we work together to set a plan that we can measure and
- 44:53nurture and follow through to repair whatever that problem is.
- 44:57And then we move on to the next thing.
- 44:59All the while, you know, we're still putting all of the components in
- 45:02the business, but it's very focused on fixing one problem at a time.
- 45:06Because I think a lot of business owners Biggest problem is they don't
- 45:09know what their biggest problem is.
- 45:10Well, Dan, we've reached that part of the episode where we like to ask our
- 45:13guests any shout outs, promotions, or anything else you'd like to share
- 45:16that we haven't covered thus far.
- 45:18Out of everything that we do, my favorite part of it is I get to really help a lot
- 45:23of them, younger people who are newer in business, start to realize their true
- 45:26potential and actually grow and scale a business and take care of their family.
- 45:30Because this is such a blue collar industry, a lot of people start, if
- 45:34you have a bucket and some soap and a towel, you can have a detailing business.
- 45:38Essentially.
- 45:38A lot of the guys focus so hard on becoming the best polisher and being
- 45:43the technician that they really skip over the business side of it.
- 45:46And we can come in and we help these guys realize the business.
- 45:50And then they actually scale their business.
- 45:51And there's not a lot that's more rewarding for me out
- 45:54of this industry than that.
- 45:55If you do have a small business and you're interested in any of that
- 45:58side, you can go to ownerspride.
- 46:02fixthisnext.
- 46:02com and you can take the assessment and we can either work together
- 46:05or you can just find out what's going on with your business.
