- 0:43Speaker 3: Happy good morning, everyone. You are listening to Retire Right Radio,

- 0:53Speaker 3: have about the market as it stands right now. Things are...
- 0:57Speaker 3: Things are where they are. So if you have any
- 1:00Speaker 3: questions about where you may be and how it pertains
- 1:02Speaker 3: to all this, you can give John a call this morning.
- 1:04Speaker 3: The number is 304-345-5858.
- 1:08Speaker 4: 345-5858.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You can text 304-935-5008.
- 1:09Speaker 1: 304-935-5008.
- 1:09Speaker 3: John, good morning. How are you doing this morning? I'm
- 1:15Speaker 3: doing wonderful. Appreciate you coming in this morning and sharing
- 1:18Speaker 3: your expertise as the days are getting shorter. That's the
- 1:21Speaker 3: one thing that was like sort of the highlight of
- 1:23Speaker 3: last week for me that I noticed that the days
- 1:26Speaker 3: are getting shorter. I'll have excuse once again to not
- 1:28Speaker 3: mow the lawn when I get home at night. So
- 1:31Speaker 3: looking forward to daylight sort of hurrying away right now
- 1:34Speaker 3: because I feel if I don't go home and do
- 1:36Speaker 3: some work right now, I feel kind of bad.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I was kind of liking the little bit milder temperatures,
- 1:41Speaker 4: but I don't think we're going to get those this week.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. I could feel the heat coming back
- 1:47Speaker 3: on a little bit. I mean, officially today we're still
- 1:50Speaker 3: in August. I know September is right around the corner,
- 1:52Speaker 3: but we shouldn't expect it to be totally autumnal yet.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I was doing some driving around this weekend, and you
- 1:58Speaker 3: can see the tops of the trees just turning that
- 2:00Speaker 3: lighter green color, you know, a little color here and there.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Some of the trees in downtown Charleston are starting to
- 2:04Speaker 3: drop their leaves just a little bit. So we're right
- 2:06Speaker 3: around the corner there. But when it comes to your
- 2:08Speaker 3: financial planning, it's always in season, right? It's always the
- 2:11Speaker 3: right season for financial planning. And so if you have
- 2:13Speaker 3: any questions about how you can plan for your future,
- 2:16Speaker 3: how you can plan for your retirement, any questions you
- 2:18Speaker 3: have for that, you can give John a call today, 304-345-5858,
- 2:20Speaker 3: or text 304-935-5008. We always start off the show by
- 2:25Speaker 3: taking a look back at the week that just was,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I guess. And last week was a big week. Several
- 2:30Speaker 3: different things happened, kind of coinciding with sort of the
- 2:33Speaker 3: vibe of the whole thing. Kevin Warsh, the new Fed chair,
- 2:36Speaker 3: I think had his first real big moment in Jackson
- 2:39Speaker 3: Hole last week. And I don't know if people were
- 2:42Speaker 3: super surprised by it, but the Fed is basically holding–
- 2:47Speaker 3: basically where they were previously. Yes.
- 2:50Speaker 4: You know, the inflation number is still a little higher
- 2:52Speaker 4: than they would like. So that's going to be their
- 2:54Speaker 4: priority going forward, which probably means rates certainly are not falling.
- 3:01Speaker 4: And like you say, this is why, you know, that's
- 3:05Speaker 4: what is being said now. But remember, six months ago,
- 3:08Speaker 4: it was rate cuts we were talking about.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And those didn't materialize either. So, you know, these are,
- 3:14Speaker 4: you know, it's a moving target. certainly. But one thing
- 3:18Speaker 4: that's not moving is your goal to retire.
- 3:21Speaker 3: That's right.
- 3:22Speaker 4: So you have to really focus on that rather than
- 3:25Speaker 4: that month in, month out news cycle. You know, last week,
- 3:31Speaker 4: the earnings were good for NVIDIA, which is a big
- 3:36Speaker 4: key for the market that the market was looking for
- 3:39Speaker 4: to see if there was any weakness in that sector,
- 3:42Speaker 4: the AI sector. And Didn't show any weakness for sure.
- 3:47Speaker 4: NVIDIA is now– I think I saw it's now– its
- 3:51Speaker 4: earnings are 7 percent of the entire S & P
- 3:54Speaker 4: 500 earnings.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Wow. That's incredible.
- 3:59Speaker 4: That's incredible. One company.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That's very incredible. Their earnings, I know, drove it right in.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And that's what people– like you said, that's what people
- 4:07Speaker 3: were looking for for those returns to come in. Let's see.
- 4:11Speaker 3: What else was going– I had some notes for last week. Oh,
- 4:13Speaker 3: we talked a little bit about it last week but
- 4:14Speaker 3: the bond market of course is still somewhat historically high
- 4:18Speaker 3: I guess compared to maybe early 20th century, something like that.
- 4:23Speaker 4: You know, really, I mean if you look back over
- 4:25Speaker 4: a long period of time, interest rates versus inflation and
- 4:30Speaker 4: the economic growth are really normal. It was more abnormal
- 4:36Speaker 4: what we had the last five, six, seven years. I
- 4:42Speaker 4: think that's– it's really just something to talk about to
- 4:46Speaker 4: be honest with you. There were some headlines made when
- 4:51Speaker 4: the US debt went over the $ 40 trillion mark and
- 4:54Speaker 4: that It caused a lot of people to write articles.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And that was a huge story for like 24 hours. Right.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Just amazing how serious people are. There are financial hawks
- 5:06Speaker 3: out there looking to do something about our debt. It
- 5:08Speaker 3: was a real serious story for 24 hours. People were
- 5:11Speaker 3: really in on it. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 4: So, you know, these things, are they issues? Sure, they're issues,
- 5:17Speaker 4: but they're issues that will be around. They'll come and go.
- 5:21Speaker 4: And like I said, you still have to plan for retirement.
- 5:24Speaker 4: You still have to take the initiative to do those
- 5:26Speaker 4: things for yourself. And the chips across the world that
- 5:32Speaker 4: we don't control will fall where they fall. And that's
- 5:35Speaker 4: just the way it is. You know, oil prices this
- 5:38Speaker 4: morning are up because there was the, I guess the U.S.
- 5:44Speaker 4: attacked some rocket launchers on some island over there in Iran.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Oil prices spiked up. You know, what will Iran do
- 5:53Speaker 4: now for retaliation? We're not going to be talking about
- 5:56Speaker 4: those things when You get down towards retirement down the
- 6:00Speaker 4: road or even if you're in retirement, you're not going
- 6:03Speaker 4: to think about that long term. Those are just things
- 6:08Speaker 4: that happen over time.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Hopefully in 15 or 20 years, nobody will remember these
- 6:12Speaker 3: weird weekends of Friday and Sunday announcements where it just
- 6:16Speaker 3: like– it's been going on for months and months and
- 6:19Speaker 3: months now where like you land the plane going into
- 6:22Speaker 3: the weekend and then you crash the thing on Sunday.
- 6:25Speaker 3: It's becoming a trend.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Well, and I'm.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Sure 15, 20 years from now, there will still be
- 6:31Speaker 4: some weird weekends, but they'll be about different things.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Different ones. Yeah, different things. Let me ask you a question.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I found that I always like to kind of ask
- 6:38Speaker 3: you a question about stuff that I see online about people,
- 6:41Speaker 3: you know, TikTok brained or whatever it might be with
- 6:44Speaker 3: different things that they have. So I saw this commentary
- 6:46Speaker 3: this weekend, and then a bunch of people started commenting
- 6:49Speaker 3: on it. So this commentator said, how much of the
- 6:51Speaker 3: economy is stuff like NVIDIA, who gave billions to OpenAI
- 6:55Speaker 3: in contract to buy chips from NVIDIA in a few
- 6:58Speaker 3: years that aren't made yet, and they both ended up
- 7:01Speaker 3: calling that income? What percentage of that is the US
- 7:04Speaker 3: economy right now? Because I don't think it's negligible. And
- 7:07Speaker 3: I see, because when you look at these things, you
- 7:08Speaker 3: do see where it's like, hey, we're going to buy
- 7:10Speaker 3: this from you in the future. You're going to buy
- 7:12Speaker 3: this from us. And it's great for everyone right now,
- 7:15Speaker 3: but this money hasn't actually been generated yet. So But
- 7:18Speaker 3: that's how everything works. I mean when you take anything
- 7:20Speaker 3: like that in a microcosm, you can say this looks weird.
- 7:23Speaker 3: But it's really just the way things kind of work.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Well, and I think there are some companies that get
- 7:29Speaker 4: created to do certain things within companies or owned by
- 7:33Speaker 4: companies or controlled by companies. A lot of things like
- 7:37Speaker 4: that are done I'm sure for tax purposes and things
- 7:41Speaker 4: of that nature. The bottom line, a company has to
- 7:44Speaker 4: be selling their product. and earning money for that to
- 7:49Speaker 4: count and certainly NVIDIA is doing that. Now, does that
- 7:56Speaker 4: represent something in the future in the pipeline? Yes, all
- 7:58Speaker 4: companies have a pipeline. And a pipeline is not fact
- 8:04Speaker 4: with any company. It's just what the expectations are and
- 8:07Speaker 4: maybe what orders. But until they're paid for, until things
- 8:10Speaker 4: are done … It's a pipeline, not a sale.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And that's part of the skill of the market, right?
- 8:15Speaker 3: I mean you determine these companies and those are the
- 8:18Speaker 3: things that you make evaluations on and things like that.
- 8:20Speaker 3: That's baked into the process, so to speak.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Yes, and the companies are making those investments because they
- 8:27Speaker 4: believe that's where the economy and where the demand will be.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And that's why people look at the earnings reports and say, OK,
- 8:36Speaker 4: are there projections that they made? Are they coming– to
- 8:40Speaker 4: fruition or are they not executing on that? But everybody
- 8:45Speaker 4: in business has some sort of a plan that they're
- 8:48Speaker 4: trying to execute that looks out over a period of
- 8:51Speaker 4: time and the farther you look out, the cloudier it is.
- 8:57Speaker 4: But that's not new. That's certainly not new.
- 9:00Speaker 3: One of the things I like to appreciate about the
- 9:02Speaker 3: show as we're doing this is Retire Right Ready with
- 9:04Speaker 3: John Burdett from 4th Avenue Financial online, 4thAvenueFinancial. com, 4thAvenueFinancial. com. You
- 9:08Speaker 3: spell out the whole thing. is as we talk about
- 9:10Speaker 3: the headlines and different things along those lines. That's sort
- 9:13Speaker 3: of the service that we have to play here. But
- 9:15Speaker 3: what that, the context of that and what John does
- 9:17Speaker 3: is it's not raising alarm flags on the economy or
- 9:20Speaker 3: anything along those lines. For John, it just signals a
- 9:22Speaker 3: rotation of different tools. So you have tools that work
- 9:25Speaker 3: within these things that I liken it to like a
- 9:27Speaker 3: knight on the field of battle. You know, he'll ride
- 9:29Speaker 3: back to a squire. It might go from a joust
- 9:31Speaker 3: to a spear to a sword or whatever it might be.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Change out your shield. You know, you're using different weapons
- 9:36Speaker 3: depending on what the battlefield lays. So when we talk
- 9:39Speaker 3: about these headlines, it's, Sure, some people take these and
- 9:41Speaker 3: they write the articles about it and all the different things.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You're looking at it as like, OK, well, bond sector
- 9:45Speaker 3: is rotating in. That's going to allow for interest rates
- 9:47Speaker 3: to be in another area where we have tools that
- 9:49Speaker 3: we can use. There's different things that you can do
- 9:52Speaker 3: depending on the battlefield that we're talking about. And you
- 9:57Speaker 3: aren't handcuffed by those things just because one thing. moves
- 10:00Speaker 3: one way in another direction, you're not rooting for one
- 10:02Speaker 3: thing or the other. You can use whatever the tools
- 10:04Speaker 3: are there. So this is instructive in so much as
- 10:07Speaker 3: what tools it is that Fourth Avenue Financial and John
- 10:09Speaker 3: Burdett can use to help in those situations. It's not
- 10:12Speaker 3: raising a white flag ever because one thing means on
- 10:15Speaker 3: one side, on the teeter-totter means it comes up on
- 10:17Speaker 3: the other side. It's okay.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Yes, there is always a reaction somewhere that provides opportunity.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I mean, even in the Great Depression, if you want
- 10:25Speaker 4: to go back to that, there were opportunities. There were
- 10:28Speaker 4: even growth industries that were going on at that time.
- 10:32Speaker 4: You know, it wasn't all just the black and white
- 10:34Speaker 4: pictures we see now. Things were still, you know, going on.
- 10:37Speaker 4: People were still trying to make progress. And, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 4: there's always opportunity. If interest rates stay high longer, well,
- 10:46Speaker 4: then there's opportunity to earn more interest in your fixed
- 10:50Speaker 4: income portfolio that helps, you know, provide the income you
- 10:54Speaker 4: need for retirement. I mean, that's a, That's a positive
- 10:57Speaker 4: thing even though all the articles say it's doom and gloom. Well,
- 11:03Speaker 4: it may be doom and gloom for certain people but
- 11:07Speaker 4: not all people. And if you have capital, if you
- 11:10Speaker 4: have assets and savings, you have the opportunity to shift
- 11:14Speaker 4: and take advantage of that. Where a person that doesn't
- 11:18Speaker 4: have savings and investment is at the mercy of it.
- 11:22Speaker 3: You're just kind of riding the wave.
- 11:24Speaker 4: That's correct and that's why it's important. To build that foundation.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I mean, it goes all the back to the same fundamentals.
- 11:31Speaker 4: We've got to serve people, earn money and live below
- 11:34Speaker 4: our means, create savings and investment. If you do that,
- 11:37Speaker 4: you will have options. No matter what comes ahead, you know,
- 11:43Speaker 4: because things do circulate, things do change, but it doesn't
- 11:47Speaker 4: mean there's no opportunity.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And it's really and I know that for what you
- 11:51Speaker 3: do for a living and trying to help folks out,
- 11:53Speaker 3: I've Every week I do– when there's an update to
- 11:56Speaker 3: like the consumer confidence and things like that, I always
- 11:59Speaker 3: take a look at it just to see where it's
- 12:00Speaker 3: trending and stuff. And again, really low. I mean it
- 12:03Speaker 3: keeps on trending, the consumer confidence. Regardless of anything else
- 12:06Speaker 3: that seems to be happening in the background right now,
- 12:08Speaker 3: the overall vibe is just kind of down right now
- 12:11Speaker 3: regardless of what the rest of the data shows.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Well, and what's interesting, if you look at the– those
- 12:18Speaker 4: articles about the debt, the US government debt crossing $ 40
- 12:21Speaker 4: trillion for instance … And panic him about that. But
- 12:27Speaker 4: the actual individual in the U.S., if you look at
- 12:30Speaker 4: the statistics, the total debt between the people and the
- 12:35Speaker 4: government as a percentage of GDP right now has not grown.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 12:42Speaker 4: In the last– Interesting. Multiple years, you know, seven, eight
- 12:46Speaker 4: years or more. So the total outstanding debt as far as,
- 12:51Speaker 4: you know, people go, you know, And you hear a
- 12:53Speaker 4: number like $ 40 trillion and you think, wow, that's huge.
- 12:57Speaker 4: But the assets of the United States and its citizens
- 13:02Speaker 4: are about $ 600 trillion. So that's a– it's a huge
- 13:06Speaker 4: number within a huger number.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Sometimes when you're playing with big numbers, this gets me
- 13:10Speaker 3: with sports contracts and stuff all the time. Sometimes you
- 13:13Speaker 3: just have to– to manage it in your head, you
- 13:17Speaker 3: have to like just consider it's almost like monopoly money.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Not that it's not real but it's not money that
- 13:21Speaker 3: I have any functional– way to touch on any daily
- 13:24Speaker 3: basis you know so it feels a little fictional so
- 13:26Speaker 3: you have to understand you're like oh you know Juan
- 13:29Speaker 3: Soto made signed a contract for half a billion dollars
- 13:33Speaker 3: you have to really try to put that in context
- 13:35Speaker 3: and within the economics of the particular sport or whatever
- 13:38Speaker 3: it might be so you have to understand the context
- 13:40Speaker 3: of those things yeah.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Yeah but you know if it were a crisis the
- 13:49Speaker 4: government wouldn't be able to continue the way it is
- 13:52Speaker 4: the fact that people are still buying our bonds. We
- 13:57Speaker 4: still have capital flows and that sort of thing. That
- 14:01Speaker 4: tells you that where else are you going to put
- 14:05Speaker 4: those funds? Where else in the world are people going
- 14:09Speaker 4: to put those funds? Are you going to put them
- 14:10Speaker 4: in China, Russia? I doubt it. I doubt it given
- 14:18Speaker 4: the way their economies operate and the way their system is. Europe,
- 14:24Speaker 4: they're struggling quite a bit comparatively to the U.S. Is
- 14:28Speaker 4: that the safe haven you want? I mean, we are
- 14:30Speaker 4: the safe haven, continue to be the safe haven, and
- 14:33Speaker 4: probably will be for as long as you can look
- 14:38Speaker 4: out unless something drastic happens. And the debt alone is
- 14:43Speaker 4: not something that, you know, it may create opportunities occasionally,
- 14:49Speaker 4: but it's certainly not something that is means doom tomorrow,
- 14:56Speaker 4: just because we clicked over a number in the same
- 14:58Speaker 4: way when the Dow reaches 40,000 or 50,000 or whatever
- 15:02Speaker 4: the number is, they always talk about that and highlight that.
- 15:05Speaker 4: It's just another number in the whole context of numbers.
- 15:10Speaker 4: It's those milestones really don't mean anything. It's just something
- 15:15Speaker 4: to talk, you know, it becomes a talking point.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It's funny on our afternoon show, um, weekly at the
- 15:22Speaker 3: top of the four o'clock hours always goes over like
- 15:25Speaker 3: the closing stock market and stuff like that. And he'll
- 15:27Speaker 3: make a little offhand comment sometimes. And one time he said,
- 15:29Speaker 3: and he started doing reports on Bitcoin. And so one
- 15:32Speaker 3: day he made a comment just offhand. Well, if we
- 15:34Speaker 3: ever see Bitcoin get over 40,000 again, then we really
- 15:36Speaker 3: have something to talk about. And it was just under
- 15:38Speaker 3: 40 at the time. So he went on. A few
- 15:39Speaker 3: days later, it got over 40. He didn't say he
- 15:42Speaker 3: didn't really mention anything about it. He just gave the
- 15:45Speaker 3: level it was at and went about it. We started
- 15:46Speaker 3: getting texts and it's like, well, what do we have
- 15:48Speaker 3: to talk about now that it's over 40? And Dave's like, well,
- 15:52Speaker 3: this isn't that show. We'll talk to somebody else about it.
- 15:55Speaker 3: But now anytime that he mentions Bitcoin, like once or
- 15:58Speaker 3: twice a week, he'll get somebody like, well, are you
- 15:59Speaker 3: going to talk about it or not? You said you
- 16:01Speaker 3: had something to talk about. It's pretty funny the way
- 16:04Speaker 3: people react to that stuff. We have tons of stuff
- 16:06Speaker 3: that we need to still get into and we need
- 16:07Speaker 3: to take a break. And we have a couple of
- 16:09Speaker 3: texts that are coming in as well. So that's kind
- 16:12Speaker 3: of where we're going to point after this. If you
- 16:13Speaker 3: have any questions for John, you're welcome to get in
- 16:15Speaker 3: on the phone call. That's 304-345-5858, 345-5858. You can send
- 16:20Speaker 3: us a text message, 304-935-5008, 304-935-5008. You're listening to Retire

- 19:33Speaker 3: You can also do that search on Facebook and like
- 19:35Speaker 3: the page over there to be kept up to date
- 19:37Speaker 3: on different things that are going on there. Phone number
- 19:39Speaker 3: is 304-746-7977. 304-746-7977. However, you can get a hold of
- 19:44Speaker 3: us this morning. Our number is 304-345-5858, 345-5858. You can
- 19:46Speaker 3: text 304- Like, we get one of these every once
- 19:58Speaker 3: in a while, and so it's always good to kind
- 20:00Speaker 3: of just reset this a little bit. This is from
- 20:02Speaker 3: the 304474. NVIDIA went up 9% on Thursday, and I
- 20:06Speaker 3: could see it in my 401K. Then Friday, it went
- 20:08Speaker 3: right back down. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Don't check every day.
- 20:12Speaker 4: No, that's the bottom line. I mean, that's what's going
- 20:15Speaker 4: to happen. Anytime, especially a focal stock like that, all
- 20:22Speaker 4: eyes are on it and everything. there can be volatility
- 20:27Speaker 4: and you're going to see that. And every day that
- 20:29Speaker 4: you check it, it doesn't change your life. I think
- 20:31Speaker 4: that's the big thing to remember. You know, when you
- 20:33Speaker 4: own a stock, you own a company, you're a part
- 20:36Speaker 4: owner of that company. You succeed over time as that
- 20:41Speaker 4: company succeeds and, and their earnings grow. That's how you
- 20:45Speaker 4: benefit from owning a company. And you know, just because
- 20:50Speaker 4: the market moves doesn't mean the, fundamentals of the company
- 20:54Speaker 4: changed over the last 24 hours. That's just what the
- 20:56Speaker 4: market did. And it doesn't change your life. If you're
- 21:00Speaker 4: saving for retirement and that stock moves up or down
- 21:03Speaker 4: 10% from day to day, does it change your life? No,
- 21:07Speaker 4: you're not relying on that. Now, when you get to retirement,
- 21:10Speaker 4: there again, your whole portfolio is not made up by
- 21:13Speaker 4: stocks like that. You build that portfolio to meet the
- 21:17Speaker 4: needs of the income. But if you're a long way
- 21:19Speaker 4: away from retirement, the only thing you really should be
- 21:23Speaker 4: focusing on are the things you can control. Am I
- 21:27Speaker 4: saving enough? Am I living below my means consistently and
- 21:31Speaker 4: not having credit card debts and things like that? Um,
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know, am I, am I diversified into the market? Um,
- 21:39Speaker 4: so I do have, you know, for instance, and investments like,
- 21:43Speaker 4: like the video, like the, the messenger here, um, but
- 21:48Speaker 4: do I also have other sectors in my portfolio to
- 21:51Speaker 4: diversify that? That's what you control, and looking at it
- 21:56Speaker 4: from day to day really is not going to change. Now,
- 22:00Speaker 4: if you're a day trader or something like that, yes, obviously,
- 22:05Speaker 4: if that's the game you're playing, you've got to watch it.
- 22:09Speaker 4: But that's not the game that I play, and it's
- 22:12Speaker 4: not the game that most folks that are successfully saving
- 22:16Speaker 4: for a long-term retirement are playing because it's unpredictable, but
- 22:22Speaker 4: it's very predictable over long periods of time. If you
- 22:25Speaker 4: own a company that is growing its earnings and you
- 22:29Speaker 4: own that long enough, it's hard not to benefit from
- 22:32Speaker 4: that if you're the owner.
- 22:35Speaker 3: And we run across this type of thing all the time.
- 22:39Speaker 3: And that advice from John always holds the day. and, uh,
- 22:43Speaker 3: from just from personal experience on certain things. And if
- 22:46Speaker 3: you're trying to watch stuff on a daily basis, when
- 22:48Speaker 3: it comes to like, especially something like a, like your
- 22:50Speaker 3: 401k or something like that, I mean, there's just too many, there's,
- 22:53Speaker 3: there's too many ponies in that circus, man. You have
- 22:55Speaker 3: no idea what's influencing what. And eventually you're just going
- 22:58Speaker 3: to drive yourself crazy if you're just chasing percentages all
- 23:02Speaker 3: the time.
- 23:02Speaker 4: And it becomes an emotional rollercoaster that lets bad or,
- 23:08Speaker 4: or invites bad decision-making in. Um, Everyone likes it. You
- 23:14Speaker 4: open your 401k and, oh, last year I made $ 50, 000
- 23:16Speaker 4: in my 401k. Well, great. And the following year, oh,
- 23:21Speaker 4: I made $ 50, 000 in my 401k.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Great.
- 23:24Speaker 4: But there are going to be some years where you
- 23:25Speaker 4: lose $ 25, 000. Well, you can change. You could throw everything
- 23:31Speaker 4: out and start over and say that stocks are worthless.
- 23:37Speaker 4: But you have to remember you made the $ 50, 000 the
- 23:40Speaker 4: year before and the year before. you're just not going
- 23:44Speaker 4: to like the market one out of every four or
- 23:46Speaker 4: five years.
- 23:46Speaker 3: It happens, right?
- 23:48Speaker 4: And that's part of the process. And if you had
- 23:52Speaker 4: a crystal ball and could tell which one of those
- 23:54Speaker 4: bad years when it was going to happen, great. But
- 23:58Speaker 4: nobody has that. Look at the news this year and
- 24:03Speaker 4: all the things that have gone on that would have
- 24:06Speaker 4: made you, and all the articles earlier in the year,
- 24:09Speaker 4: it would have made you think, hey, There's no way
- 24:12Speaker 4: we can have a good year. But look at where
- 24:14Speaker 4: we are. We're at record highs. You can't predict these
- 24:17Speaker 4: things because these companies are trying their best, no matter
- 24:23Speaker 4: what the environment is, to stay profitable and serve their customers. And,
- 24:29Speaker 4: you know, that's why most of the doom that you
- 24:31Speaker 4: hear certainly could happen but usually doesn't happen because people
- 24:37Speaker 4: react to that or believe in many cases are proactive
- 24:43Speaker 4: in making their plans and building their businesses because they're
- 24:48Speaker 4: looking at those environments and responding to it. You know,
- 24:53Speaker 4: how the customer is interacting with them. You know, they
- 24:55Speaker 4: want to respond to that. And if a customer says, hey,
- 25:00Speaker 4: we'd like to see more of this, and they feel
- 25:02Speaker 4: there's an opportunity, that's when they make those changes. And
- 25:05Speaker 4: that really is outside of the headlines of the world.
- 25:09Speaker 4: That's the relationship between the business and the customer. And
- 25:17Speaker 4: that's where really the rubber meets the road as far
- 25:19Speaker 4: as the earnings come in and you benefit as the owner.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Great information with John Burdett from 4th Avenue Financial. I
- 25:27Speaker 3: got another text message in along the same line, sort of,
- 25:30Speaker 3: from the 304-523. I'm 55 and I've been putting off
- 25:33Speaker 3: financial planning. I'm sorry. then putting off calling a financial
- 25:37Speaker 3: planner because I feel like I don't have enough to
- 25:40Speaker 3: justify it. How much do you need saved before it
- 25:42Speaker 3: makes sense to talk to someone at Third Avenue Financial?
- 25:45Speaker 3: We talk about that every so often as well. There's
- 25:48Speaker 3: no magic number, right?
- 25:49Speaker 4: There's really not a magic number. I mean, everybody has
- 25:52Speaker 4: to start somewhere and every portfolio that's large started off small.
- 25:59Speaker 4: There are a lot of firms out there that do
- 26:02Speaker 4: have limits. Um, you know, I need 250,000, I need 500,000. Um,
- 26:08Speaker 4: that's not the case. Um, I will work with just
- 26:12Speaker 4: about anybody, even younger folks that are just starting out,
- 26:15Speaker 4: trying to help get a good path for them. I mean,
- 26:17Speaker 4: that's one of the things I enjoy doing, um, because
- 26:21Speaker 4: I feel like I'm really helping have an impact in
- 26:24Speaker 4: somebody's life and outcome. Um, so, um, I mean, the
- 26:30Speaker 4: one thing that I do like and how I kind
- 26:32Speaker 4: of screen is I want to make sure that, you know,
- 26:36Speaker 4: you don't come to a financial advisor and just say, here,
- 26:42Speaker 4: make me money. It's a relationship and it is a process.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And even if you don't have a lot of money,
- 26:50Speaker 4: if you're willing to work through that process, then I'm
- 26:55Speaker 4: going to be there to help you through that. I
- 27:01Speaker 4: think it's not like just buying a stock or just
- 27:05Speaker 4: here's money, invest it for me. We really want to
- 27:09Speaker 4: look at your situation and craft a plan that works
- 27:13Speaker 4: for you. And that requires input and a little bit
- 27:16Speaker 4: of work from the other side as well. And that's
- 27:20Speaker 4: really what I use. If you're committed to bettering your
- 27:24Speaker 4: financial position, I don't care if you're starting out with
- 27:29Speaker 4: $ 100 a month. I'll help you put that foundation together.
- 27:37Speaker 4: It's really one of the most rewarding things that I
- 27:39Speaker 4: do as far as work because I know that it
- 27:42Speaker 4: has such a huge impact over time on people's lives.
- 27:45Speaker 3: I want to make sure to highlight that because I
- 27:47Speaker 3: think maybe some people get the inclination that if I'm
- 27:51Speaker 3: going into a financial planner that I need to have
- 27:53Speaker 3: this lump sum to go in with, that I need
- 27:54Speaker 3: to have my my house in order first, and then
- 27:57Speaker 3: I go in and I have all this money that
- 27:58Speaker 3: I'm going to invest in the market or whatever. John
- 28:01Speaker 3: service starts you at basically you can start at zero. Like,
- 28:05Speaker 3: I mean, when you talk about the Ramsey method and
- 28:06Speaker 3: the debt snowball and stuff like that, that's designed for
- 28:08Speaker 3: people that it's looking to get room to start making
- 28:12Speaker 3: moves in their life. They need to start paying off
- 28:14Speaker 3: debt so they can make investments or doing whatever it
- 28:16Speaker 3: is they need to do. So if you're starting at
- 28:18Speaker 3: zero and you feel like you're starting at zero, you
- 28:20Speaker 3: need John then more than you did at any other
- 28:22Speaker 3: time because you can help with those things. I mean,
- 28:24Speaker 3: there might not be massive investments that you can make tomorrow,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but you can start the path to clear some room
- 28:30Speaker 3: so you can start investing in your future. And that's
- 28:32Speaker 3: the first step. The first step isn't saying, hey, I
- 28:34Speaker 3: suddenly have $ 100, 000 I can invest. You need to get
- 28:37Speaker 3: there first. And that's where John can help you with. Right, right.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Help you through that process, build the foundation. Create the
- 28:43Speaker 4: pathways to get there, to get those goals that you
- 28:47Speaker 4: have for yourself. Turn them just from a dream into
- 28:50Speaker 4: an actual workable plan that turns it into reality. And
- 28:56Speaker 4: I like to say there's no hard limit on that.
- 28:59Speaker 4: It's just a matter of a commitment that, hey, I'm
- 29:02Speaker 4: going to make effort here. It does no good to
- 29:05Speaker 4: come to a financial advisor and just say, here's my money,
- 29:08Speaker 4: do something with it. If you're running up credit card debts,
- 29:11Speaker 4: you know, the market's never going to out-earn bad habits
- 29:14Speaker 4: in your financial life. And so we want to make
- 29:17Speaker 4: sure that you have that set so that your investments
- 29:22Speaker 4: will pay off and will grow and take care of you,
- 29:27Speaker 4: not just be used to try to offset bad habits
- 29:31Speaker 4: that you have. That's just not going to work.
- 29:34Speaker 3: And it's amazing how skills will, I mean, I am
- 29:38Speaker 3: not the most skilled person when it comes to these
- 29:40Speaker 3: types of things, but the one skill that I did
- 29:42Speaker 3: develop years and years ago was after I paid off
- 29:46Speaker 3: all of my debt, I became very, very adamant, militant
- 29:50Speaker 3: about not going into debt. Like I am not going
- 29:52Speaker 3: to go into debt. It doesn't mean I have the
- 29:53Speaker 3: most money in the world or I make all the
- 29:55Speaker 3: other best decisions or anything along those lines. But the
- 29:57Speaker 3: one thing I don't do is I don't carry debt.
- 29:59Speaker 3: And that really, even that one skill, even if I
- 30:02Speaker 3: missed the mark on a lot of other things, it
- 30:04Speaker 3: gives you some functionality in the future because you're not
- 30:07Speaker 3: always trying to bet against some debt that you have
- 30:09Speaker 3: that's holding you back somewhere. I might have– I may
- 30:11Speaker 3: have shortchanged myself in other ways or made mistakes other–
- 30:15Speaker 3: but it's not debt. That's the one problem I don't
- 30:16Speaker 3: have and that gives me a little bit of a
- 30:18Speaker 3: leg up. And if you can learn to pay off
- 30:20Speaker 3: those things and get that debt snowball going and to
- 30:22Speaker 3: give you that freedom, you can really see a lot
- 30:24Speaker 3: of options open up ahead of it even if you
- 30:26Speaker 3: don't drastically increase your income or you don't suddenly become
- 30:29Speaker 3: wealthy overnight. You can give yourself that headroom to start
- 30:32Speaker 3: making some moves.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt about it. And debt is the– You know,
- 30:40Speaker 4: if you think about it, if you have credit card debt,
- 30:44Speaker 4: even if you're not doing this line item budget, you
- 30:47Speaker 4: don't need to do a detailed budget to know I
- 30:50Speaker 4: did something wrong here. I spent more than I brought in.
- 30:54Speaker 4: That's the only way you have that debt. Well, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 4: the budget obviously helps you identify that. But clearly, you know, Houston,
- 31:02Speaker 4: we have a problem over here if there's debt accumulating.
- 31:06Speaker 4: That means you're not living below your means. You need
- 31:09Speaker 4: to make adjustments. You either need to increase your means
- 31:12Speaker 4: or you need to control the outflow better.
- 31:16Speaker 3: And you can do that. There are several different methods
- 31:18Speaker 3: and things that you can be instructed on to do that.
- 31:21Speaker 3: And a lot of times it's just picking up a
- 31:23Speaker 3: phone call. Sometimes you need– there's different types of counsel
- 31:26Speaker 3: you can get and people get counseled on different things.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Financial counseling is part of it. Figuring out what your
- 31:31Speaker 3: tolerances are for different things, figuring out where maybe your
- 31:33Speaker 3: blind spots are, your weak spots are. where it is
- 31:36Speaker 3: that you can maybe shave some money off and get
- 31:38Speaker 3: a little help. I mean, talking to another person who's
- 31:41Speaker 3: a highly credentialed expert in those fields can really help.
- 31:44Speaker 3: That's different than talking to your spouse, your parent, or
- 31:49Speaker 3: your best friend, or whoever it might be. I mean,
- 31:50Speaker 3: they might have decent advice, but it's not the advice
- 31:52Speaker 3: of an expert, more than likely. And talking to somebody
- 31:55Speaker 3: who's an expert can really give you some help.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Yes, there's actually an article. I thought about talking about
- 32:00Speaker 4: it today, and I guess at the end of the show,
- 32:02Speaker 4: here we are. But it says, it was a person
- 32:05Speaker 4: that says, I study successful people. They have one habit
- 32:09Speaker 4: in common. It is the willingness to ask others for advice.
- 32:14Speaker 3: Yeah, look at that.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 3: There's a lot of people, and it's weird too, whether
- 32:20Speaker 3: it's an ego thing or they think they should just know.
- 32:22Speaker 3: A lot of people, and I've ran across this, I
- 32:24Speaker 3: don't know how many times in my life, where as
- 32:26Speaker 3: a homeowner or whatever it might be, you get into
- 32:29Speaker 3: a situation where you're a grown adult and you find
- 32:31Speaker 3: yourself in a situation that you don't know about. And
- 32:33Speaker 3: sometimes you're like, I should know this and then you
- 32:35Speaker 3: get really reluctant to add– to ask somebody in your
- 32:39Speaker 3: cohort like a fellow adult or whoever it might be.
- 32:42Speaker 3: What do I do in this situation? The truth of
- 32:44Speaker 3: the matter is everybody gets in those situations sometimes. And
- 32:47Speaker 3: it's OK to ask.
- 32:49Speaker 4: Well, do you not think that Elon Musk or Bill
- 32:52Speaker 4: Gates have advisors? Of course. Right.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Of course they do.
- 32:55Speaker 4: They've got– people that have experience in every field that
- 32:59Speaker 4: they are trying.
- 33:00Speaker 3: To operate in. Even if you try to pretend like
- 33:02Speaker 3: you don't have advisors, you have advisors that have helped
- 33:05Speaker 3: you in your decisions. Yeah, that's true. And so we
- 33:09Speaker 3: can't pay to have a team of advisors for us.
- 33:11Speaker 3: What we do is we have Fourth Avenue Financial that
- 33:14Speaker 3: can work for you and to help you make these
- 33:16Speaker 3: decisions and to help you get to those places where
- 33:18Speaker 3: you have a little bit of that freedom. And picking
- 33:21Speaker 3: up the phone call and just getting that started, for
- 33:24Speaker 3: a lot of people, that's going to get them on
- 33:25Speaker 3: the right path.
- 33:26Speaker 4: Absolutely. And like I say, I'm always willing to talk.
- 33:29Speaker 4: You can schedule it easily online on the website or
- 33:33Speaker 4: just simply give us a call and we'll schedule a
