Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We know that there has been a lot of discussion
- 0:02Speaker 1: you've just heard it about those alcohol restrictions in Alice
- 0:05Speaker 1: Springs and questions about whether it's just going to push
- 0:07Speaker 1: the problems elsewhere. On Friday, we spoke to Joe Hersey,
- 0:11Speaker 1: the member for Catherine, who told us that she understands
- 0:14Speaker 1: there has been people already arrive in Alice from Alice Springs.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I should say to Catherine. Now joining us on the
- 0:21Speaker 1: line to speak more about the situation is the mayor
- 0:23Speaker 1: of Catherine, Liz Clark. Good morning to you, Liz.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I have good morning Katie.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning. Liz. Are
- 0:32Speaker 1: there concerns the alcohol restrictions in Catherine are going to
- 0:35Speaker 1: push people to places, sorry, the alcohol restrictions in Alice Springs,
- 0:39Speaker 1: that they are going to push people to places like
- 0:42Speaker 1: Catherine to access alcohol?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think when something is when something like that
- 0:49Speaker 2: is done in one town, it should be across the board,
- 0:51Speaker 2: not just in Alice Springs, because that's exactly what does happen.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So you reckon that we actually need these restrictions right
- 1:00Speaker 1: across the Northern Territory, like Mondays and Tuesdays Alcohol takeaway
- 1:04Speaker 1: three days.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well, whatever the consensus is here. If you cannot just
- 1:13Speaker 2: do it in one town, it only causes crime displacement
- 1:18Speaker 2: and it moves the problem to other areas to seed addictions.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So it needs to be And I've heard on the
- 1:27Speaker 2: news and the Kimberley was suffering as well, So it's
- 1:31Speaker 2: across the north that we're all seemed to be having
- 1:34Speaker 2: a similar issue.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Liz, how are things going in Catherine at the moment?
- 1:39Speaker 1: I know that we had Joe Hersey on the show
- 1:40Speaker 1: on Friday and she had said that her understanding is
- 1:43Speaker 1: that there had already been some people arriving from Alice Springs.
- 1:47Speaker 2: What's your take, Well, we certainly haven't slided up on
- 1:52Speaker 2: the crime rate. The crime is still very similar to
- 1:56Speaker 2: Alice Springs. The people of Catherine have reached their tolerance
- 2:00Speaker 2: point and remedies do definitely need to be applied territory
- 2:05Speaker 2: wide because how and it needs we need to find
- 2:09Speaker 2: the root cause. Why is this happening suddenly now and
- 2:14Speaker 2: increasing across the territory, Liz.
- 2:17Speaker 1: When you talk about those alcohol restrictions, if they were
- 2:20Speaker 1: indeed pushed to know further around the territory, right around
- 2:24Speaker 1: the northern territory, what difference. Do you think it would
- 2:26Speaker 1: make or how do you reckon it would help.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I don't believe it will help. I think that it's
- 2:32Speaker 2: just a band aid solution to a bigger problem. We
- 2:35Speaker 2: need to find the root cause of why it's happening.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You know, why do we have young people out in
- 2:41Speaker 2: the streets now? Why suddenly do we have this crime
- 2:46Speaker 2: that we that's successive? It It just doesn't seem to end.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It just is constant, and it's right throughout the territory,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I think it's I think we need to look
- 2:56Speaker 2: at the root causes, not just closing a few bottle shops,
- 3:00Speaker 2: because we also have you know, there's also drugs in
- 3:02Speaker 2: that out in the street. But we need to look
- 3:06Speaker 2: at the root causes, not just closing the bottlows and
- 3:09Speaker 2: thinking that's going to help.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's been the interesting thing, hasn't it, Liz. You know,
- 3:13Speaker 1: obviously Alice Springs is in dire need of additional support,
- 3:18Speaker 1: but the fact is that we've got issues right around
- 3:21Speaker 1: the Northern territory. And I did note even at the
- 3:24Speaker 1: beginning of last week when the crime stats had come out,
- 3:27Speaker 1: that it did show that they'd been quite the increase
- 3:29Speaker 1: in Catherine too.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Absolutely, we need to we need to address the key
- 3:35Speaker 2: issues of addiction to alcohol, youth crime, and domestic violence.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's not it's no longer acceptable just to close a
- 3:43Speaker 2: couple of bottle shops and thinks that that's going to
- 3:45Speaker 2: fix the problem. It is. It is a major problem
- 3:49Speaker 2: throughout the territory. We need to look at the root
- 3:52Speaker 2: causes of this problem.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Liz, as that focus you know, continues on Olice
- 3:57Speaker 1: Springs though, and as they have you know, these restrictions
- 4:01Speaker 1: in place and potentially have a ballad about whether they
- 4:04Speaker 1: continue restrictions, et cetera, et cetera. What do you think,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you know, the ramifications could potentially be for other parts
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the Northern Territory, particularly for Catherine if those if
- 4:16Speaker 1: those restrictions do remain in place in Alice.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think what will happen is there'll be a shift
- 4:22Speaker 2: and again it'll cause a crime displacement, So people will
- 4:26Speaker 2: move further to will move to either both Catherine and
- 4:30Speaker 2: to Darwin, and they will also move across the Kunnanara.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So anywhere that doesn't have these restrictions will certainly see
- 4:39Speaker 2: an increase in people coming to those towns.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Well, Liz, I think that you know that the concerns
- 4:45Speaker 1: you raise the ones that many of us are worried
- 4:47Speaker 1: about at this point in time. I really appreciate you
- 4:50Speaker 1: having a chat with us this morning. The Mayor of Catherine,
- 4:52Speaker 1: Liz Clark, thanks so much for your.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Time and thank you. Thank you very much, Katie, thank
- 4:58Speaker 2: you
