- 0:00Today is going to be a day in which when you leave today you
- 0:06will say, I am so glad that I came to church today.
- 0:12I would hope you say that every Sunday.
- 0:14I know you don't probably. But on this Sunday I can almost
- 0:18guarantee that you will be saying, I am so glad that I went
- 0:24to church today. We are looking at a verse in
- 0:31First Thessalonians 5 verse #18 that says in everything give
- 0:37thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning
- 0:43you. It is a one of of a trilogy of
- 0:47commands that says that we are to rejoice always, we are to
- 0:53pray without ceasing, and we are to give thanks in everything
- 1:00because those 3 commands are God's will in Christ Jesus
- 1:06concerning you. It is the model life.
- 1:11It's the model life of of adoration, the life that adores
- 1:14God, a life that lives according to Christ design.
- 1:23And as we think about what God has said, that we are to be
- 1:28joyful, prayerful, and thankful, those 3 commands sum up the
- 1:37essence of true adoration of the believer.
- 1:45When it comes to being thankful, we usually fall into one of
- 1:51three categories. Let me explain them to you.
- 1:57One category is that we are thankful after the adversity or
- 2:05after the the affliction or after the adverse circumstance.
- 2:13We'll call this post thankfulness after everything is
- 2:20said and done. I'm thankful for instance, in
- 2:25the book of Exodus after the party of the Red Sea and Israel
- 2:29murmured and complained that that Moses had dragged them out
- 2:33of Egypt to to die in the wilderness.
- 2:36And Moses said, just stand still and watch the salvation of the
- 2:40Lord. And the waters parted.
- 2:41They went through on dry land and Pharaoh and all of U.S.
- 2:44Army were drowned in the sea. Everybody was thankful.
- 2:50They were so thankful before the party of the Red Sea, but after
- 2:54it was over, everybody's saying praises to God.
- 2:57Read about in Exodus chapter 15, the great song of Miriam, the
- 3:01song of praise of song of Moses, right?
- 3:04And Miriam was the one who led them with dancing in
- 3:08tambourines, praising God for what he had done.
- 3:14One of the 10 lepers, after he was healed of leprosy, came back
- 3:18and gave thanks to God. This is the easiest category of
- 3:24thankfulness, isn't it? We go through a situation of the
- 3:28adverse circumstance and we come out the other side and we say,
- 3:31Lord, we are so thankful and rightly so, we should be.
- 3:37But then there's another category of thankfulness.
- 3:43Not just those who are thankful after the adversary.
- 3:48This was a little bit harder. These are the ones who give
- 3:52thanks to God before the battle. We're going to call this.
- 3:58We're going to call this pre thankfulness.
- 4:06In other words, they give thanks before the battle begins.
- 4:10These are the people of faith like Daniel.
- 4:15You remember Daniel, it was said that Darius signed a decree that
- 4:22nobody can bow down or pray to any other God but him.
- 4:29And so it says that Daniel 6 verse #10 Now when Daniel knew
- 4:33that the document was signed, he entered his house.
- 4:36Now in his roof chamber he had windows open towards Jerusalem
- 4:41and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying
- 4:47and giving thanks before his God as he had been doing previously.
- 4:56This is before the battle. You give thanks to God.
- 5:02This was Daniel, a man of great faith and of course you know the
- 5:07story. He was thrown into the lion's
- 5:09den and and God spared his life and he became just another great
- 5:14individual in that land. There's also King Jehoshaphat.
- 5:21We talked about him a couple of weeks ago.
- 5:24He would say, Lord, we don't know what to do, but our eyes
- 5:26are upon you as the kings of Ammon and the Moabites and the
- 5:32Edomites came against Israel to fight them.
- 5:35Listen to what Jehoshaphat did in Second Chronicles chapter 20
- 5:41when it says verse 20. They arose early in the morning
- 5:46and went out to the wilderness of Tacoa, and when they went
- 5:50out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Listen to me, O Judah and
- 5:53inhabitants of Jerusalem, put your trust in the Lord your God,
- 5:57and you will be established. Put your trust in his prophets
- 6:00and succeed. When he had consulted the
- 6:03people, he appointed those who saying to the Lord and those who
- 6:08praised him and holy attire as he went out before the army and
- 6:12said Give thanks to the Lord for his loving kindness is
- 6:17everlasting. So Jehoshaphat gathers the
- 6:22people of Judah around, tells them to trust in the Lord, and
- 6:27then gets the choir and puts them in front of the army and
- 6:31sends them out first to sing praises to God and give thanks
- 6:37to God for his loving kindness. And of course Israel won the
- 6:45battle without ever having to lift a finger, because the
- 6:50armies of Edom and Moab and Emin destroyed themselves.
- 6:56But they gave thanks before the battle.
- 6:59Jesus did the same on the eve of the crucifixion, when he broke
- 7:03the bread and gave thanks. He blessed the cup in the same
- 7:08manner, by giving thanks Before the battle, before the garden,
- 7:15before Calvary, he gave thanks. I wonder if that's you.
- 7:23You know the battles coming. You know it's on the horizon.
- 7:28Do you kneel and and give thanks to God for all that he's about
- 7:32to do? Comprehending the fact that God
- 7:35is sovereign. He's in charge, He's in control.
- 7:38You're not, but God's going to do something.
- 7:42So you have you have the people who give thanks after the
- 7:46affliction. Those are post thankful people.
- 7:52Yeah, those who who give thanks before the battle, those are pre
- 7:58thankful people. But the rub is this.
- 8:04Those who give thanks during the difficulty, during the hardship,
- 8:14we call this mid thankfulness. Those who give thanks right in
- 8:20the middle of the turmoil. These people are unique.
- 8:28They're like Jonah we saw last week in the belly of the fish.
- 8:32In the middle of his of his trial, he offered a sacrifice of
- 8:37Thanksgiving. It's like the apostles when they
- 8:45were beaten in Acts chapter 5 and they gave thanks to God
- 8:51because they were able to suffer for his name's sake.
- 8:56It's like Job, well, he lost everything he said, blessed be
- 9:06the name of the Lord, for it's the Lord who gives and the Lord
- 9:11who takes away. It's like the Apostle Paul in
- 9:15Silas in Acts 16 when they were in prison and they begin to
- 9:21sing, sing praises to God and give thanks to him while in
- 9:25prison. Paul had probably the best
- 9:29prison ministry anybody ever had, but he was always giving
- 9:32praise and thanks to God. Just read the the book of
- 9:35Philippians where he tells those in in Philippi to rejoice in the
- 9:39Lord always. And again.
- 9:42I say rejoice because he would give Thanksgiving to his God in
- 9:46the midst of his prison cell. I wonder if that's you.
- 9:53That's what Paul says. And 1st Thessalonians 5 verse
- 9:55#18 in everything, not before everything, not after everything
- 10:01in everything, give thanks for this is the will of God in
- 10:09Christ Jesus concerning you. How on earth can anybody ever
- 10:18really truly do that? Even though we have examples in
- 10:22Scripture of those who did, How do we do that?
- 10:27We told you last week that that Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving
- 10:30reveals my conversion to Christ. It reveals my commitment to the
- 10:35will of God. It also reveals my my condition
- 10:39spiritually. Nothing reveals your spiritual
- 10:43condition more than when you give thanks.
- 10:48Remember, Thanksgiving is not a matter of feeling thankful.
- 10:55Thanksgiving is a matter of obedience to God.
- 11:01It's like forgiveness. You don't forgive because you
- 11:04feel like forgiving. If that's the case, you probably
- 11:07never forgive anybody. You forgive because you obey the
- 11:13command of God to forgive. The same is true with a thankful
- 11:20heart. You give thanks to God because
- 11:23it's a command and you adore Him and you worship Him and you want
- 11:27to obey the commands of God. Turn with me if you would to the
- 11:34book of Colossians, the book of Colossians in the 3rd chapter.
- 11:43This how you know Thanksgiving reveals your condition
- 11:47spiritually when Paul says in verse 12, chapter 3.
- 11:50So as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on
- 11:54a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
- 11:58patience, bearing with one another and forgiving each
- 12:01other, whoever has to complain against anyone, just as the Lord
- 12:05forgave you, so also should you beyond all these things, love,
- 12:12which is the perfect bond of unity.
- 12:16And then he says this, Let the peace of Christ rule in your
- 12:21hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body, and be
- 12:30thankful. Let the peace of of Christ rule
- 12:37in your hearts. Let the fact that you are now no
- 12:40longer the enemy of God, but that you're the friend of God.
- 12:43You're at peace with God. Having been justified by faith,
- 12:47we have peace with God. Let the fact that you're at
- 12:49peace with God be the governing factor in every decision you
- 12:54make. In other words, the word rule
- 12:55means to umpire to make the final call.
- 12:59In other words, let Christ make the final call in every decision
- 13:05you make and then be thankful. Let the peace of Christ rule in
- 13:13your hearts, and then he says, let the word of Christ reside in
- 13:21your heart. He says, let the word of Christ,
- 13:24which He dwell within you with all wisdom, teaching and
- 13:27admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual
- 13:29songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
- 13:36How do you sing with thankfulness in your heart to
- 13:39God? Because the word of Christ is at
- 13:42home. It richly dwells in your heart.
- 13:45The word of God is not a stranger to you.
- 13:47When the word of God is a stranger to you, you have no
- 13:49song of Thanksgiving. But when the word of Christ is
- 13:52no longer a stranger, it's at home in your heart.
- 13:55It resides as supreme in your heart.
- 13:58You sing with Thanksgiving. So Paul says let the peace of
- 14:06Christ rule in your hearts and be thankful.
- 14:12Let the word of Christ reside in your heart so you can sing with
- 14:18thankfulness. And then he says, let the name
- 14:22of Christ reign in your hearts. He says verse 17, whatever you
- 14:28do in Word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
- 14:33giving thanks through him to God the Father.
- 14:40In other words, whatever you do in Word or in deed, no matter
- 14:45what you're doing, no matter where you're going, Christ
- 14:48reigns supreme. The name of Christ, the nature
- 14:51of Christ, the character of Christ who He is, reigns
- 14:54supreme. And when He does, you give
- 14:58thanks. That's why we say that
- 15:01Thanksgiving reveals our condition spiritually.
- 15:10When the peace of Christ rules, when the word of Christ resides,
- 15:19and when the name of Christ reigns, thankfulness just spews
- 15:25out. Now having said that, how is it
- 15:34possible for anyone at any time, no matter how adverse the
- 15:41circumstance, no matter how bad the battle, no matter how severe
- 15:48the suffering, can one be thankful?
- 15:55Well, This is why you will be so glad you came today.
- 16:03I'm going to give you 7 principles that will help you
- 16:07understand how I can obey the command of God to be thankful in
- 16:12everything so that my life of adoration becomes a model that
- 16:19exemplifies Jesus Christ my Lord.
- 16:23Follow through with me very carefully.
- 16:26Number one, I am thankful always, at all times in
- 16:32everything for a throne that is graceful.
- 16:38A throne that is graceful. You know the verse Hebrews
- 16:45chapter 4, verse #16 Therefore, let us draw near with confidence
- 16:50to the throne of grace so that we may receive mercy and find
- 16:57grace to help in time of need. There is a throne, it's heaven's
- 17:07throne, and it's where the King himself sits.
- 17:13It's called the throne of grace. And I'm able to go there
- 17:17confidently when I am in need of God's grace to be poured out in
- 17:24my life. We are saved by grace, for, you
- 17:29know, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 17:32And that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor.
- 17:38Why set you through his poverty might become rich?
- 17:442nd Corinthians 8 verse #9 For by grace are you safe to faith?
- 17:52We're saved by grace. We're strengthened by grace.
- 17:56Second Timothy 2 verse #1 Be strong in the grace that is in
- 17:59Christ Jesus. You can read Titus chapter 2
- 18:03verses 11 the following We we are sanctified by grace.
- 18:09Everything about our lives comes because of free sovereign favor
- 18:19that God gives to the ill deserving.
- 18:23That's that's Benjamin Warfield's definition of grace,
- 18:29God's free favor, free sovereign favor that he gives to the ill
- 18:40deserving. The Bible is so replete with
- 18:48God's wonderful grace. Listen to what the Lord says to
- 18:56the pen of Isaiah and Isaiah 30 verse #18 Therefore the Lord
- 19:03longs to be gracious to you. Imagine that the Lord longs to
- 19:12be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to
- 19:16have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of
- 19:21justice. How blessed are all those who
- 19:24long for Him. The Lord waits on high to have
- 19:31compassion upon you. He wants you to come to the
- 19:35throne of grace because He longs to show you His loving kindness.
- 19:40He wants to be gracious to you. And so the right of Hebrews
- 19:45tells us we can go to that throne with confidence, knowing
- 19:49that God will bestow grace upon us.
- 19:52There's a throne that is graceful.
- 19:55That's why I can be thankful in everything, because I need God's
- 19:58grace to sustain me. I need God's grace that's
- 20:01sufficient for me from day-to-day.
- 20:03I need God's grace to strengthen me from day-to-day.
- 20:06I can't make it without God's grace.
- 20:10And there's a throne that is graceful, where the God of grace
- 20:16sits and waits because he so desperately longs.
- 20:22To be gracious to you, let's know what Peter says.
- 20:30Peter said that this way in first Peter 5 verse #10 he says
- 20:37after you have suffered for a little while.
- 20:42How long is that? I have no idea because heaven
- 20:49has no clock, has no calendar, so I don't know how long a
- 20:52little while is. The peace is after you've
- 20:55suffered a little while. The God of grace, the God of
- 21:00grace who sits on the throne of grace, who longs to be gracious
- 21:06to you, the God of grace who calls you to his eternal glory
- 21:11in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and
- 21:16establish you. That's what God wants to do.
- 21:20He wants first of all, to perfect you.
- 21:24He wants to to restore that which is missing.
- 21:29He wants to take that which is broken and put it together.
- 21:33He wants to establish you. He wants to make you solid as
- 21:36granted. He wants to strengthen you.
- 21:38He wants to fill you with strength.
- 21:40He wants to settle you so you have a firm foundation.
- 21:44What God wants to do, someone comes along as well.
- 21:49I know the God of grace. I've I've gone to the throne of
- 21:51grace. I, I've begged for grace and,
- 21:53and and and I haven't received grace.
- 21:58Well, Peter answers that when he says this.
- 22:03God is opposed to the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
- 22:11If you're not experiencing God's grace, it's because of your own
- 22:14pride for the humble person God just longs to be gracious to.
- 22:21So there's a throne that is graceful so I can give thanks in
- 22:25everything because that throne is always available for me to
- 22:29approach confidently #2 Not only is there a throne that is
- 22:37graceful, there is a hope that is delightful, a hope that is
- 22:45delightful. Hope is not guesswork.
- 22:49Hope is not speculation. Hope is assurance.
- 22:53In the Bible, it's it's a conviction that God will fulfill
- 22:59every promise. It's the anticipation of every
- 23:02promise that God gives will be accomplished in the life of His
- 23:06own. Listen to what Paul says in
- 23:08Romans chapter 8. He says in Romans 8 verse #24
- 23:12For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen as not
- 23:17hope for who hopes for what is already sees.
- 23:20But if we hope for what we do not see with perseverance, we
- 23:25wait eagerly for it. Then he goes on to say verse
- 23:30#828 for we know that all things work together for good to those
- 23:35who love God in a called according to his purpose.
- 23:39Why he tells you he says for those who he foreknew verse 29.
- 23:46He predestined to become conformed to the image of his
- 23:50son. See, there's a hope that's
- 23:52delightful. What's the hope?
- 23:54The hope is not going to be conformed to the image of his
- 23:56Son, and God will use any measure to make sure that my
- 24:00life represents him to the best way possible.
- 24:06And God will stop at nothing to to make you, to mold you, to
- 24:10form you, to be this best representative on earth.
- 24:17So God does that. There's a hope that is
- 24:21delightful because it's a throne that is graceful #3 There is an
- 24:32advocate that is needful, an advocate that is needful.
- 24:40What is John saying in first John chapter 2?
- 24:45He says in verse #1 My little children, I am writing these
- 24:47things to you so that you may not sin.
- 24:50And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus
- 24:56Christ the righteous. You know, so many times in the
- 25:01midst of our trial, in the midst of our tomorrow, there is sin
- 25:05that occurs, but we have an advocate that's absolutely
- 25:10needful. Now, here's here's the key
- 25:12point. We have a advocate in heaven and
- 25:17we have an advocate in our heart because the word for advocate is
- 25:24paracletos. Same word used of how Christ
- 25:28describes the Spirit of God. When he says that I'm going to
- 25:33send to you another comforter, another paracletos, another
- 25:39advocate. So you have an advocate in your
- 25:43heart, right? An advocate in your heart who
- 25:49soothes you in your difficulties, and an advocate in
- 25:54heaven who speaks in our defense.
- 26:01We have an advocate that's needful.
- 26:03That's why I can give thanks and everything because there's a
- 26:06throne that that's graceful that I can approach at any time.
- 26:11And there's a hope that's delightful because God's doing
- 26:13something unique and special in my life that I have no idea what
- 26:15He's going to do, but I hope in the hope of His promises.
- 26:23And I have an advocate that will soothe me from the inside my
- 26:29heart and speak for me on the outside in heaven, because Satan
- 26:37is the accuser of the brethren, and Christ is my great defense.
- 26:43That's how I know I can give thanks in everything.
- 26:47But it gets better. Not only is there a throne that
- 26:50is graceful, hope that is delightful, and advocate is
- 26:52needful, there is a new life that is meaningful.
- 26:57If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation.
- 26:59All things have passed away. Behold, all things have become
- 27:01new. There's a new life that's
- 27:03meaningful. How can I give thanks and
- 27:04everything? Because Christ gave me his life.
- 27:09Christ, who is my life? Colossians 3 verse #3 He's my
- 27:14life. And listen, it is a meaningful
- 27:18life. So it's so important to realize
- 27:22that there's a new life that's meaningful.
- 27:26I've been saved by His grace. I'm a child of the living God.
- 27:30Therefore, listen. Listen.
- 27:33As Christians, we don't find meaning in our education.
- 27:38We don't find meaning in our job.
- 27:41We don't find meaning in our marriage.
- 27:43We don't find meaning in our children.
- 27:45We don't find meaning in my bank account.
- 27:48Those are all temporary things that come and go.
- 27:52You find meaning only in Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 27:56He gives you meaning. He gives you significance.
- 27:59He gives you everything you long for because He's the God of the
- 28:02universe and He's your God. And therefore you don't find
- 28:08meaning in your work, in your money, in your marriage.
- 28:12You bring meaning to your work. You bring meaning to your
- 28:17marriage. You bring meaning to your
- 28:19workplace, to your school. You bring meaning to everybody
- 28:22you come in contact with because you have a new life.
- 28:26So now you have a new life that's meaningful.
- 28:29So in the midst of whatever it is you're going through, realize
- 28:31that you're a child of the living God whose life is
- 28:34completely and totally meaningful, not because of you,
- 28:38but because of Christ. And I'm going to bring meaning
- 28:41to that environment, that difficulty, that hardship, to
- 28:44whoever it may be and whoever it affects.
- 28:49That's how I can give thanks. Thank you, Lord, for a new life
- 28:52in Christ. Thank you for a throne that I
- 28:56can approach, Thank you that I have an advocate in my heart and
- 29:03in heaven. And thank you, Lord, that my
- 29:07hope is fixed on you. This is the will of God, that
- 29:14you give thanks in everything. How there's a throne that is
- 29:20graceful, a hope that is delightful, an advocate is
- 29:26needful, a new life that is meaningful #5-A king who is
- 29:36powerful. A king who is powerful.
- 29:43Psalm 6211. Power belongs to God.
- 29:50He is the king of all kings. He is the Lord of all Lords.
- 29:56And Isaiah 96, he's called the AL Gabor, the Almighty God in
- 30:02the Book of Revelation 9 times. He's called the Pantocrator the
- 30:06Almighty. He's my king and my king is all
- 30:14powerful. Jeremiah 3217 says, Behold, thou
- 30:20has made the heavens and the earth by thy great power,
- 30:26therefore nothing is too difficult for thee, nothing he
- 30:36is able to do. Ephesians 320 exceeding
- 30:38abundantly above all that we ever ask or think, according to
- 30:45the power that works in US. There's a power that works in us
- 30:53because we serve a king who is powerful.
- 30:57That's why 2nd Corinthians 69 says the eyes of the Lord search
- 31:00to and fro throughout all the earth, so that he might
- 31:05strengthen, give power to those whose hearts are completely His.
- 31:12That's what God wants to do. That's how God does that, so I
- 31:20can give thanks in everything because there's a throne that is
- 31:24graceful, there's a hope that is delightful.
- 31:30There's an advocate that was needful, a new life that is
- 31:35meaningful, a king who is powerful.
- 31:42Number six, there's a father who is merciful, a father who is
- 31:53merciful, the Bible says over in Second Corinthians chapter 1,
- 32:00blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
- 32:04Father of mercies. God doesn't have mercy.
- 32:11God is mercy. That's there's a big difference
- 32:17there. God doesn't have love.
- 32:20He is love doesn't have grace. He is grace.
- 32:23That's who He is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
- 32:29who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be
- 32:32able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort
- 32:35with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
- 32:40He, he's called the Father of mercies, and so how can I give
- 32:45thanks and everything is because I have a Father in heaven who's
- 32:48absolutely, truly merciful to me.
- 32:56God's grace is for those who are guilty.
- 33:00God's mercy is for those who are miserable.
- 33:05And that's why God's mercy is so great.
- 33:08Ephesians 2. Four.
- 33:09He is rich in mercy. Hebrews 27 Christ is called our
- 33:13merciful and faithful high priest in Psalm 136.
- 33:19Every verse ends with his mercies endure forever because
- 33:25there's a Father who is merciful.
- 33:27Listen to what the psalmist did. Psalm 69, verse #13 But As for
- 33:35me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, at an acceptable time.
- 33:39O God, in the greatness of Your mercy, answer me with Your
- 33:43saving truth. Deliver me from the mire, and do
- 33:46not let me sink. May I be delivered from my foes
- 33:49and from the deep waters. May the flood of water not
- 33:52overflow me, nor the deep swallow me up, nor the pit shut
- 33:56its mouth on me. Answer me, O Lord, for Your
- 33:59mercy is good according to the greatness of your compassion.
- 34:04Turn to me, the psalmist did He approached the God of mercies so
- 34:14that the waters would not overflow him, the grave would
- 34:17not swallow him. Who else do you go to but the
- 34:22Father of mercies? And then over in, in Psalm 86,
- 34:29first number one, incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for
- 34:31I am afflicted and needy. Preserve my soul, for I am a
- 34:35godly man. O you my God, save your servant
- 34:38who trusts in you. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for
- 34:42to you I cry all day long. Make me glad or make glad the
- 34:46soul of your servant. For to you, O Lord, I lift up my
- 34:51soul. For you, Lord, are good and
- 34:55ready to forgive and abundant in mercy to all who call upon you.
- 35:02He's abundant in mercy to those who call upon him.
- 35:07Verse 11 Teach me your ways, O Lord, I will walk in your truth,
- 35:10unite my heart to fear your name.
- 35:11I will give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
- 35:16and will glorify your name forever.
- 35:17For your loving kindness or your mercy toward me is great, and
- 35:22You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
- 35:28This is so good. It's the mercy of God, the
- 35:33Father of mercies. That's why I can be thankful in
- 35:38everything. I have a Father who is
- 35:41absolutely merciful. The Bible says He's abundant in
- 35:44mercy. Psalm 90.
- 35:52Psalm 90, verse #14 O, satisfy us in the morning with Your
- 36:02mercy, that we may sing for joy, and be glad all our days.
- 36:09And then he says something very, very interesting.
- 36:12Let's know what He says. Make us glad according to the
- 36:16days you have afflicted us and the years we have seen evil.
- 36:28The psalmist says. In the morning you show mercy,
- 36:32in the morning you give mercy, and we shout for joy, and our
- 36:36hearts are glad. But Lord, make us glad according
- 36:40to the days in which we were afflicted.
- 36:47You see, there's something about affliction that draws you so
- 36:52close to the Lord that without affliction you would never
- 36:55experience it. There's something about
- 36:59suffering, hardship, difficulty, pain that does something that
- 37:06nothing else on earth can do. It drives the believer to the
- 37:13Father of mercies. Why?
- 37:20Because there the throne of grace, mercy is dispensed.
- 37:27So there's a throne that is grateful, There is a hope that
- 37:33is delightful. There is an advocate that was
- 37:36needful, a new light that's meaningful.
- 37:39A king was powerful, a father was merciful.
- 37:43And the number seven, I'm sorry, did I say 7 earlier?
- 37:46There's really eight. Sorry.
- 37:47You go pastor, there's really 10.
- 37:52No, that's not true. There's an unspeakable gift that
- 37:56is wonderful thanks being to God for his unspeakable gift, the
- 38:04gift of eternal life. It's not eternal life is not
- 38:09longevity of life, although it does last forever.
- 38:14Eternal life is, is knowing Christ, John 17 verse #3 this is
- 38:20eternal life that they may know the one true God and Jesus
- 38:29Christ who now has sent eternal life is quality of life.
- 38:35And so there's an unspeakable gift that's wonderful.
- 38:38How wonderful is it? It's the gift of God's eternal
- 38:42life. And so I can give thanks to God
- 38:46in everything, because what I'm experiencing right now is only a
- 38:51a blip on the screen of eternity.
- 38:56I will one day spend all my glory days with my God because
- 39:05He's given me the gift of eternal life that comes only
- 39:09through His Son, Jesus Christ. So how can I give thanks and
- 39:16everything? How does someone like Erica
- 39:22Kirk, after the assassination of her husband this past week, how
- 39:27does she give thanks and everything?
- 39:30What would you tell her? How would you encourage her to
- 39:35give thanks? How would you encourage a loved
- 39:36one who is going through great bouts of suffering?
- 39:43You show them there's a throne that's absolutely graceful,
- 39:49There's a hope that's delightful.
- 39:53There's an advocate who is needful.
- 39:56There is a new life that is meaningful.
- 40:02There's a king who is powerful, a father who is merciful, an
- 40:10unspeakable gift that is wonderful.
- 40:14Lastly, there's a Lord who is faithful.
- 40:22A Lord who is faithful, Paul says in First Thessalonians 524,
- 40:28Faithful is he who calls you, and he also will bring it to
- 40:32pass. Psalm 33, four says, For the
- 40:38word of the Lord is righteous in all his works.
- 40:43All of them are done in faithfulness.
- 40:51Isaiah 11 verse #5 says faithfulness is the belt around
- 40:56His waist. In other words, faithfulness
- 40:59ties all of His attributes together.
- 41:04And then Psalm 37 three says feed securely on His
- 41:13faithfulness. In other words, your food.
- 41:17Spiritually speaking, this is faithfulness.
- 41:22Hebrews 10/23 says he who promised is faithful, and then
- 41:32Second Thessalonians chapter 3 verse #3 says the Lord is
- 41:35faithful and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil. 1
- 41:47the Lord who is faithful. The psalmist Psalm 119 said
- 41:55this. I know, O Lord, that your
- 42:01judgments are righteous. So I ask you, do you know that?
- 42:10Do you know that God's judgments are righteous?
- 42:13He's a righteous God. All of his judgments are done in
- 42:17righteousness. And God is a faithful God, so
- 42:23his righteous judgments are faithful judgments.
- 42:28So the psalmist says in Psalm 1/19/75.
- 42:30I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are righteous and in
- 42:36faithfulness You have afflicted me.
- 42:45The psalmist knew his affliction was because of God's
- 42:49faithfulness. Well, why would God and His
- 42:53faithfulness afflict you? The psalmist answers that
- 42:57question too. Verse 67.
- 43:01Before I was afflicted, I went astray, but now I keep Your
- 43:06word. Lord, You are so faithful to
- 43:10afflict me. Why?
- 43:11Because before I was afflicted, I just did whatever I wanted to
- 43:14do. I went my own way.
- 43:18But now because of affliction, I keep your word.
- 43:28And then he says in verse 71, It is good for me that I was
- 43:36afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.
- 43:44Without affliction, you'll never learn the statutes of God.
- 43:51So God is doing everything He can to bring you closer to Him.
- 43:58And so unfaithfulness, because His judgments are always
- 44:02righteous. He afflicts you so that you'll
- 44:09no longer go your own way, but that you'll keep His word and
- 44:14that you'll learn all you can about him, because without that
- 44:19affliction you would not learn. So if you are astute, you know
- 44:31that that was an acrostic for the word thankful, so that in
- 44:39everything you can give thanks, you can obey that command.
- 44:45Isn't it interesting that Paul never tells him what I told you
- 44:49today? But he didn't have to.
- 44:52He didn't tell them how to rejoice always.
- 44:57He just told them to rejoice always.
- 44:59Didn't tell them how to pray without ceasing and didn't tell
- 45:04them how to give thanks in everything, even though this is
- 45:07God's will for you. Because the First Thessalonians
- 45:11213 and that is when they heard the Word of God, they knew it
- 45:18was God's holy word and they just put out the welcome mat and
- 45:22received it as God's word and they welcomed it with joy.
- 45:31I want all of us to be able to give thanks and everything
- 45:37because this is the will of God for you and for me.
- 45:43And May God give us the grace to accomplish that.
- 45:45Let's pray together. Lord God, we thank you for this
- 45:50day, Lord, so much, so much to address and talk about.
- 45:57So little time seems to do it, to do it all.
- 46:02And yet, Lord you, you've given us your precious word.
- 46:07I pray and word for everyone in the room today.
- 46:09I don't know what but hardship or pain or difficulty things are
- 46:15going, people are going through in this, in this, in this room.
- 46:19But Lord, you know, and you long to be gracious to them.
- 46:24You wait on high to show compassion upon them.
- 46:30That's you. That's what you do.
- 46:34And our prayer, Father, is that we would be a thankful people no
- 46:41matter what the situation, no matter what the circumstance, no
- 46:44matter how bad the turmoil, no matter how deep the water, how
- 46:51gross the grave maybe truly give thanks to you and everything,
- 46:58for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning each and
- 47:02every one of us. So we thank you for today as we
- 47:09leave, maybe leave differently than when we arrived.
- 47:14Maybe say I'm so glad to have come today to worship the King
- 47:23in Jesus name, Amen.
