- 2:41Speaker 2: read alund West, Virginia. Hey doing none, I'm doing well. Thanks,
- 2:44Speaker 2: thank you for being here. I got to ask you
- 2:45Speaker 2: last time you're on, you were talking about your the big,
- 2:48Speaker 2: the big event that you guys were doing at the
- 2:50Speaker 2: University of Charleston. How did that go?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Rida Peluza?
- 2:52Speaker 2: It was great?
- 2:53Speaker 4: Thank you, thanks to the sponsors and the ticket buyers
- 2:56Speaker 4: and the donors and your listeners. We generated about fifty
- 2:58Speaker 4: thousand dollars to fund Read Aloud into the coming year
- 3:01Speaker 4: and keep going motivating kids to read for fun.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And that's the whole concept behind it.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Now.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Speaking of which, that's kind of why you're here today
- 3:08Speaker 2: to talk about something related to fun reading for fun.
- 3:11Speaker 2: School ends in Kanaha County tomorrow. Other counties in our
- 3:15Speaker 2: listing area, if they haven't already wrapped up, they will
- 3:17Speaker 2: over the next couple of days or so. Co next week.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I want to talk to you about summer reading. How
- 3:23Speaker 2: important is it for kids and for parents to make
- 3:25Speaker 2: sure that parents make sure the kids do it. Oh,
- 3:30Speaker 2: great question.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Summer reading is one of the best things kids can
- 3:35Speaker 4: do to not only maintain their reading skill that they've
- 3:39Speaker 4: learned the previous year, but to build vocabulary and background
- 3:42Speaker 4: knowledge which will propel them through into success in the
- 3:46Speaker 4: coming year. But I really want to emphasize how important
- 3:51Speaker 4: it is to let kids read for fun over the summer.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Sometimes I get this question from parents. I hope you
- 3:58Speaker 4: don't mind my sharing this with you get the question
- 4:00Speaker 4: from parents quite often if they're concerned about their students,
- 4:04Speaker 4: their kids, how well they're doing in school. They ask
- 4:06Speaker 4: me well, what could I be doing? And if it's summertime,
- 4:09Speaker 4: if the child has some sort of diagnosis or a
- 4:11Speaker 4: learning disability, obviously you follow up on all of those
- 4:14Speaker 4: services and get the help you need. But if that
- 4:17Speaker 4: isn't the case, and even if it is the case,
- 4:19Speaker 4: reading two children and having children have the opportunity to
- 4:23Speaker 4: read whatever they want just for fun does more for
- 4:26Speaker 4: them than you would imagine. Okay, it's amazing with the
- 4:29Speaker 4: data on this.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And I was going to say, you know the data,
- 4:32Speaker 2: because we've talked about it in the past. What does
- 4:33Speaker 2: the data show?
- 4:35Speaker 4: So children need to learn about three thousand new words
- 4:38Speaker 4: a year. Now you work that out, that's like ten
- 4:41Speaker 4: words a day. I don't know about you, but I
- 4:42Speaker 4: don't sit down and memorize ten new vocabulary words a day.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Maybe in a class when you're studying new biology terms
- 4:49Speaker 4: or economic terms, you will focus on certain strange new words.
- 4:53Speaker 4: But that is not how we learn words. We learn
- 4:55Speaker 4: words by reading things that are of interest to us.
- 5:00Speaker 4: And a new word shows up in the context, and
- 5:02Speaker 4: maybe we figure it out from the context, maybe we
- 5:04Speaker 4: look it up, maybe we ask mom and dad, and
- 5:07Speaker 4: then we're using the word, and now the meaning of
- 5:10Speaker 4: that word, the relationship how it fits in our language
- 5:14Speaker 4: is in the mind somewhere, and when the child encounters
- 5:17Speaker 4: that word or that concept later in the social studies
- 5:21Speaker 4: text or an English class or in math, they've got
- 5:24Speaker 4: something in their mind to attach new knowledge to. So
- 5:28Speaker 4: I'm not talking about sitting down with a whiteboard and
- 5:31Speaker 4: in a formal instruction situation in the summer. I'm talking
- 5:35Speaker 4: about reading Black Panther or Magic school Bus or basketball books,
- 5:41Speaker 4: whatever is it of interest to the child.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And I think and you've talked about that at Pascain.
- 5:47Speaker 2: We're talking with Don Miller from Reading a Loud, West Virginia.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You've talked to me about this on and the listeners
- 5:52Speaker 2: in the past about reading for fun, and there's nothing
- 5:56Speaker 2: wrong with that. I mean, if you I was a kid,
- 5:59Speaker 2: if you if you wanted me to sit down and
- 6:01Speaker 2: read the Great American Novel, probably not going to happen.
- 6:05Speaker 2: But you give me when I was seven eight years old,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you give me a book about football or something like that.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'm reading it. You know, I'm reading as much as
- 6:15Speaker 2: I can get my hands on.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Now.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I don't know what other than that, I have a
- 6:18Speaker 2: headful of you useless trivia about the NFL that I learned.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Then I don't know what I actually took from it.
- 6:23Speaker 2: But it's not about what you're reading, from what you're
- 6:26Speaker 2: telling me, it's the fact that you are reading something
- 6:28Speaker 2: that's right.
- 6:29Speaker 4: You took more from it than you know. You learned word,
- 6:31Speaker 4: you don't remember learning. You learned how sentences were put together.
- 6:35Speaker 4: You develop knowledge that you could then use to make inferences.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You can't make inferences or synthesize information, or analyze anything
- 6:45Speaker 4: if you don't have knowledge in your mind. I can't
- 6:48Speaker 4: ask you about the causes of anything or what would
- 6:52Speaker 4: have happened differently in a given historical situation or today,
- 6:56Speaker 4: if you don't have background knowledge in your mind. And
- 7:00Speaker 4: you get that not by drilling on it until your
- 7:05Speaker 4: mind goes numb, but by just chasing your curiosity and
- 7:08Speaker 4: reading what appeals to you. And summertime is great for
- 7:11Speaker 4: that because you don't have to go to school every day.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So what happens though, And I can hear and I'm
- 7:16Speaker 2: not a parent, but I can hear parents grandparents, Right,
- 7:18Speaker 2: I listened to this point. I don't want to be
- 7:21Speaker 2: the bad parent here and say until my kid when
- 7:24Speaker 2: all the other kids are out swimming and riding motorcycles
- 7:27Speaker 2: and doing all the things that kids do during the summer.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I don't want to be the one to tell them, Okay,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you need to read something you How do you counter that.
- 7:34Speaker 4: That's such a great question, because we don't want to
- 7:36Speaker 4: do that either, you know, I don't want to say
- 7:37Speaker 4: that either. I don't want to take away swimming or
- 7:39Speaker 4: anything else from kids in the summer. And I can't
- 7:42Speaker 4: stress this enough. We embrace the sort of RESTful, free
- 7:47Speaker 4: summer vibe that we remember from summer vacation when we
- 7:50Speaker 4: were kids. We're all about it. I have a couple
- 7:52Speaker 4: of suggestions for you. Kids are already curious. They're not
- 7:56Speaker 4: swimming at in the last hour before bedtime. You know,
- 7:59Speaker 4: maybe there's a half hour an hour before bedtime when
- 8:02Speaker 4: it would be good to read. There are rainy days,
- 8:04Speaker 4: there is time time. Children spend time waiting, waiting in
- 8:08Speaker 4: the car, waiting in line. They spend time when they're
- 8:12Speaker 4: tired and they're mentally awake, but their bodies are tired.
- 8:15Speaker 4: So there are opportunities in the day to have reading,
- 8:20Speaker 4: have books buy you. So really, what adults do is
- 8:23Speaker 4: create the environment for it to happen. Maybe open one up.
- 8:26Speaker 4: If the habit isn't already established in the home, maybe
- 8:32Speaker 4: start to introduce it at the right time. But I
- 8:35Speaker 4: would never recommend saying you have to read and you
- 8:38Speaker 4: can't go swimming today. That's just that is not fun.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Well, I mean, and I think just based on what
- 8:45Speaker 2: I read and what people tell me, is some with
- 8:47Speaker 2: some kids, we could have a problem with them wanting
- 8:49Speaker 2: to go out anyway. So you know that you need
- 8:51Speaker 2: to encourage that sort of be well rounded.
- 8:53Speaker 5: I guess right.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I think the harder thing is to get kids off
- 8:55Speaker 4: the screens that they enjoy. It's just you and I
- 8:57Speaker 4: were speaking about this, and it isn't just kids. Adults
- 9:00Speaker 4: the same problem. I mean, I have to put my
- 9:02Speaker 4: phone away and like pay attention to things that are
- 9:05Speaker 4: not on the screen. And so adults struggle with us too,
- 9:08Speaker 4: And so that's a good example to set. You can
- 9:11Speaker 4: make a habit of saying, Okay, I'm gonna turn this
- 9:16Speaker 4: screen off, I'm gonna put this phone away, and I'm
- 9:18Speaker 4: going to open this book and reading two kids, even
- 9:21Speaker 4: kids who can already read reading to them, they still
- 9:23Speaker 4: get good benefit from it. It also creates nice time
- 9:27Speaker 4: family memories. I mean, there's so many good things about it.
- 9:29Speaker 4: But having adults read to kids reading a book that's
- 9:33Speaker 4: suitable for the whole family, when pull in the younger
- 9:35Speaker 4: ones and the older ones, those can be some really
- 9:37Speaker 4: nice summer memories. And if you're interested, I have a
- 9:39Speaker 4: couple of techniques that I might just mention for parents.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So one of the things we've discovered, we've.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Been you actually you turned your microphone off over there.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You're good Now. It happens all that. I don't I
- 9:52Speaker 2: don't know why, with the desire of the studio, with
- 9:54Speaker 2: all as great as it is, why they thought it
- 9:56Speaker 2: would be a good idea to put on and off
- 9:58Speaker 2: switch is where people put their hands. But it happens
- 10:01Speaker 2: more often than you know, you accidentally turned it off.
- 10:03Speaker 2: There we go ahead, We're good, You're good, thank you?
- 10:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 10:06Speaker 2: The techniques is where we work, right.
- 10:08Speaker 4: So one of the book distribution methods that we do
- 10:11Speaker 4: that we started about two and a half years ago
- 10:13Speaker 4: is book bundles. We give a child, we find out
- 10:15Speaker 4: what the child's favorite subject is, we give them five
- 10:18Speaker 4: books on that subject. Because research says that first of all,
- 10:22Speaker 4: they're motivated to read those books and when you read
- 10:25Speaker 4: multiple texts on the same subject you're passionate about, you're
- 10:28Speaker 4: reading proficiency in that subject not only grows, but it
- 10:32Speaker 4: grows faster than if I gave you books all on
- 10:34Speaker 4: different subjects or all on books on your reading level.
- 10:38Speaker 4: So parents and families can do this at home. You
- 10:42Speaker 4: could go to the library and if your kid is
- 10:44Speaker 4: interested in sharks, or interested in basketball, or I will
- 10:48Speaker 4: just tell you the most popular ones of the kids
- 10:51Speaker 4: in West Virginia, basketball, drawing, football, hunting, fishing. You take
- 10:56Speaker 4: home a bag of books on that subject and have
- 10:58Speaker 4: them around and open in them up and brows through them.
- 11:02Speaker 4: You don't have to cover to cover. You just brow
- 11:05Speaker 4: the way you read your football books. You read what
- 11:07Speaker 4: interests you, and then when you're done with that, go
- 11:09Speaker 4: get another one. That's one technique to start with. Bring
- 11:12Speaker 4: in the books that interest you, creating a little time
- 11:15Speaker 4: to read something together. Start a novel or a book
- 11:19Speaker 4: with a good story you can really think your mind
- 11:22Speaker 4: into and read it together. That's another good way to
- 11:25Speaker 4: get started. It won't be perfect, I say to parents
- 11:28Speaker 4: all the time, because people want to beat themselves up. Oh,
- 11:31Speaker 4: I should read every day and then as soon as
- 11:33Speaker 4: you don't read for that fifteen minutes one day, I failed.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I don't look at it like that. Look at the
- 11:38Speaker 4: last seven days. Have you read at least four out
- 11:41Speaker 4: of the last seven days, Okay, then you're on. You're
- 11:44Speaker 4: doing it. You're succeeding because life happens. You know, you don't.
- 11:48Speaker 4: Maybe you don't get to it every day. But if
- 11:50Speaker 4: you can look back over the last seven days and
- 11:53Speaker 4: count up four days and you're doing it, then you're
- 11:56Speaker 4: doing it. You're reading more than half the time. The
- 11:58Speaker 4: other nice thing about doing it that way is seven
- 12:00Speaker 4: day window restarts every day, So if you've had a
- 12:02Speaker 4: bad patch you haven't read for the last three days,
- 12:04Speaker 4: it's okay, you're still on. You You've got four more days.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And don you and I have talked about this before,
- 12:10Speaker 2: reading an actual book versus reading a device, because we
- 12:14Speaker 2: are constantly in the saying kids and you and I
- 12:18Speaker 2: talked off the air. Adults too struggle with devices of
- 12:22Speaker 2: all kinds, reading an actual book, magazine, newspaper, whatever, hard
- 12:26Speaker 2: copy as opposed to reading on a device.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yeah. So this research is developing and emerging. What we
- 12:33Speaker 4: do know the indications for the youngest kids is paper
- 12:38Speaker 4: is better. That's that there's nothing that shows the device
- 12:42Speaker 4: is better for the youngest ones. I'm talking babies, toddlers, preschoolers,
- 12:46Speaker 4: elementary kids. If I can get a book on a
- 12:50Speaker 4: device that I can check out from the library electronically,
- 12:53Speaker 4: it's better than not having anything at all. It's less
- 12:56Speaker 4: clear for adults and older students, and so much of
- 13:01Speaker 4: our work requires us to be on the device that
- 13:03Speaker 4: it's hard to say you should be doing this on paper.
- 13:07Speaker 4: But the for the kids, the indications our paper is better,
- 13:11Speaker 4: and I suspect in some years we're going to find
- 13:15Speaker 4: that it's going to be better for us too. Something
- 13:17Speaker 4: about the distractions. We read differently on screens. And I
- 13:21Speaker 4: can tell you with the youngest ones who are still
- 13:23Speaker 4: learning how to who are still learning how to write,
- 13:27Speaker 4: tapping and swiping does not write in your brain the
- 13:31Speaker 4: same way as writing with pencil or I.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Just read an article about that not long ago, exactly.
- 13:36Speaker 4: So paper and pencil and crayons and paper books are
- 13:40Speaker 4: definitely better the younger you are. We're not sure about.
- 13:43Speaker 4: I can't say for sure about, but the indications are
- 13:47Speaker 4: we're better off when we put the screens away.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Textas is Dave. When I was in high school, my
- 13:50Speaker 2: mom got readers, digest condensed books, got just enough info
- 13:54Speaker 2: to write a decent book report, save behind in many times,
- 13:57Speaker 2: well done, well done, you know efficient.
- 14:00Speaker 5: That's fish.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Don Miller Read Aloud West for Junior. Can people learn
- 14:04Speaker 2: more about the programs.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Go to our website, which is read aloud wv dot org.
- 14:09Speaker 4: If you have a specific question, we're happy I take
- 14:12Speaker 4: questions from parents three O four three four five five
- 14:15Speaker 4: two one two. Obviously, if you want to volunteer, you
- 14:18Speaker 4: can reach us at it either of those places, and
- 14:20Speaker 4: you can always email me. D Miller Read.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Aloud wv dot org and get out there and start reading.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, for fun reading it. If you and your children
- 14:31Speaker 4: aren't enjoying it, yeah, relax, do something else for a minute,
- 14:35Speaker 4: come back to it. It's if it's not fun. Uh,
- 14:38Speaker 4: you're not doing it right.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I'll tell you we've got to go. I'll tell you
- 14:42Speaker 2: a quick story about about my about my reading.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Uh.
- 14:46Speaker 2: When I was in school, in elementary school, I was
- 14:48Speaker 2: so bad at art. I mean I cannot draw to
- 14:51Speaker 2: this day, I cannot draw anything. There's something about that
- 14:55Speaker 2: part of my brain never developed. Okay, Well, actually, many
- 14:57Speaker 2: parts of my brain that never developed out of beyond
- 14:59Speaker 2: about age fourteen.
- 15:01Speaker 5: All right, but.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I was so bad at art that the and this
- 15:05Speaker 2: is probably not good teaching, but my teachers in elementary school,
- 15:10Speaker 2: when it came time to the end of the day
- 15:11Speaker 2: when everybody would do art, would just say, David, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 2: we're gonna let David.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Read a book.
- 15:16Speaker 2: And so I would go grab to me that was
- 15:18Speaker 2: an encyclopedia. I'd go grab the c encyclopedia and read it. Okay,
- 15:24Speaker 2: So to this day I got I can answer ninety
- 15:27Speaker 2: five percent of the questions on Jeopardy, but I can't
- 15:30Speaker 2: draw stickfick. So so I don't know if that was
- 15:33Speaker 2: a good idea or not. But they said, if he'll
- 15:35Speaker 2: we'll just let him read, We'll give him a bee.
- 15:37Speaker 4: And you enjoyed it.
- 15:38Speaker 5: I did.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I did, but I stole can't.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Draw, and she helped you avoid some frustration.
- 15:43Speaker 5: I guess.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Yeah, most of us can't draw as adults because we
- 15:46Speaker 4: stopped getting instruction in elementary school.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's not just me. Then, Don Miller read

- 18:33Speaker 2: One of my favorite books growing up was Me and
- 18:36Speaker 2: the Splitter by Gay Lord Perry. I read it over
- 18:39Speaker 2: and over again. Although I hated to read as a kid,
- 18:41Speaker 2: one of the best things my wife and I did
- 18:43Speaker 2: for my kids was let them take books to bed
- 18:46Speaker 2: with them and read until they fell asleep. Both of
- 18:49Speaker 2: them are now avid readers. Good stuff there. Doug Irwin
- 18:53Speaker 2: is here backpack, buts hey.
- 18:54Speaker 5: Going man, good morning.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Well, since we're talking about reading, what does what does
- 18:58Speaker 2: Doug read? Or were you an avid reader as a kid?
- 19:01Speaker 5: I wasn't.
- 19:02Speaker 11: And listening about going to the class and having the
- 19:06Speaker 11: teachers talk to my parents about just picking up something
- 19:08Speaker 11: and reading. I was a big into magazines and newspapers.
- 19:12Speaker 11: Still read the paper today.
- 19:13Speaker 5: And hard copy.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Do you read it online?
- 19:15Speaker 5: Well, I've switched to Twitch to online and.
- 19:18Speaker 2: God blessing late the late Doug scaff when he would
- 19:21Speaker 2: come in for an interview and he would sit there
- 19:23Speaker 2: and he would say, you still got your paper with you,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and he said, you're the one that's keeping us in
- 19:28Speaker 2: business because I still get the hard copy of the
- 19:30Speaker 2: paper well.
- 19:31Speaker 11: And the best thing about being online being able to read.
- 19:33Speaker 11: I love uh lived in Pittsburgh a little bit, read
- 19:36Speaker 11: the Post, still read the Post Gazette even though they
- 19:38Speaker 11: just recently had a transition there. But being able to
- 19:41Speaker 11: check in on different sparts to the Steelers and the
- 19:44Speaker 11: Inquiry in Cincinnati, to check up on the Reds, and
- 19:47Speaker 11: just that love of news and reading, you know, just
- 19:51Speaker 11: a voracious reader of news and love papers and magazines.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the same of course here with backpack Buddies.
- 19:58Speaker 2: For those that have not heard you on the air
- 20:00Speaker 2: with us the last couple of years, explain what the program.
- 20:03Speaker 11: Is, what we do our organizations backpackbuddy dot org. We
- 20:08Speaker 11: started fourteen years ago, we saw a need in our community.
- 20:11Speaker 11: We started in Putnham County and what we've done is
- 20:15Speaker 11: that during the school year, we've got a lot of
- 20:17Speaker 11: great civic organizations, churches and other groups that provide extra
- 20:23Speaker 11: food to kids to take home on the weekend to
- 20:26Speaker 11: kind of tied them.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Over to get back to school to have Believe.
- 20:30Speaker 11: It or not, a lot of our kids their main
- 20:32Speaker 11: source of nutrition during the school year is the free
- 20:35Speaker 11: and reduced lunch meals that they receive from schools. And
- 20:40Speaker 11: we see even in Putnham County Boone County, you know,
- 20:43Speaker 11: forty two plus percent of our kids qualify for these programs.
- 20:48Speaker 11: And what we've got is the schools, the teachers, the counselors,
- 20:53Speaker 11: they see these kids go home and they make sure
- 20:56Speaker 11: that they got a little bit of extra to go
- 20:58Speaker 11: home on the weekends. So we started talking to some
- 21:01Speaker 11: of these teachers and counselors say what are they doing
- 21:03Speaker 11: in the summertime? Said, well, we try a couple of
- 21:04Speaker 11: different things, and we were not able to really reach
- 21:07Speaker 11: the kids to the scope that we uh that we
- 21:10Speaker 11: do during the school year. So what we did is
- 21:12Speaker 11: we kind of took a step back and said, how
- 21:15Speaker 11: do we reach these kids during the school year because
- 21:18Speaker 11: you know, they say, well, we've we've set up programs
- 21:20Speaker 11: and people come, say hey, come to the school on
- 21:23Speaker 11: Tuesdays and we've got stuff for you. Maybe one or
- 21:25Speaker 11: two people would come. And why wouldn't people be able
- 21:28Speaker 11: to come? Well, parents are working. Parents maybe didn't have
- 21:31Speaker 11: transportation and gas you know, you know, you know, you
- 21:36Speaker 11: didn't have gas money to come to meet at a
- 21:38Speaker 11: central location from because we're rural. Our state is rural,
- 21:42Speaker 11: and you know, we've got a lot of kids on
- 21:44Speaker 11: we talk about buses, times of kids on buses, so
- 21:48Speaker 11: people got to drive these miles. So what we developed
- 21:50Speaker 11: was a box and uh, we're able to put together
- 21:55Speaker 11: twenty three different items in a box and we actually
- 21:58Speaker 11: mail these items to students five times during the school
- 22:02Speaker 11: year or during the summertime. So they're getting this support
- 22:06Speaker 11: from us every other week during the during the summer.
- 22:10Speaker 11: And we've eliminated that transportation that.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Logistics delivered directly to It is delivered directly to their home.
- 22:16Speaker 11: And what we've done also is that it looks like
- 22:19Speaker 11: an Amazon box that doesn't say backpack buddy on it,
- 22:22Speaker 11: It doesn't say hey, this is food.
- 22:24Speaker 5: It is.
- 22:26Speaker 11: Discreete and it's just got and it's mailed to the
- 22:29Speaker 11: parents home because the parents sign up for this, and
- 22:32Speaker 11: so we mail this to the families five times during summer.
- 22:36Speaker 2: So how do the families sign up for this?
- 22:39Speaker 5: We work very closely with the school systems.
- 22:42Speaker 11: We work with counselors, the central office staffs in the
- 22:46Speaker 11: counties that we participate in, and they're they're instrumental in
- 22:50Speaker 11: getting these families.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Signed up because they know who needs the help.
- 22:54Speaker 11: And so, you know, we have a sign up we
- 22:57Speaker 11: offer to everybody in the counties that we're in. And
- 23:00Speaker 11: but then after you know, everything closes, we go back
- 23:03Speaker 11: to the teachers and the counselors and say, hey, these
- 23:06Speaker 11: are the folks that signed up. Who's missing, And they
- 23:09Speaker 11: really scrub that list and they know.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Who to get to participate.
- 23:13Speaker 11: They participate during the school year and they call the
- 23:16Speaker 11: families and and they get those those families signed up
- 23:19Speaker 11: so they can receive the continued support during the summer.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Doctor Doug Irwin again from the Backpack Buddies program, and
- 23:25Speaker 2: we're gonna bring the Buddies part into it here. Momentarily,
- 23:28Speaker 2: do you want to let you know the day of
- 23:29Speaker 2: the Dave Island showing five any Live is brand chewing

- 23:41Speaker 2: dot com for more to tail. So tell us about
- 23:43Speaker 2: the buddy part of the whole thing, because in order
- 23:46Speaker 2: it takes a lot to pull this off. Goes How
- 23:49Speaker 2: many boxes are we talking about?
- 23:50Speaker 11: Well this summer, for this year, we're gonna be sending
- 23:53Speaker 11: out about forty five hundred boxes in Boone and Putnam Counties.
- 23:59Speaker 11: And what we do is that what we have call
- 24:03Speaker 11: our community Packing Days where we get all of the food.
- 24:06Speaker 11: We've got like seventy thousand different items coming for the
- 24:11Speaker 11: Putnam County Day. We've got like twenty thousand cans of
- 24:14Speaker 11: ravioli on order. And what we do is on.
- 24:18Speaker 5: The first Saturday of every year. This year it will be.
- 24:21Speaker 11: June sixth, we invite the community to come and help
- 24:24Speaker 11: us pack our boxes. And we have everything set up
- 24:27Speaker 11: at the Tays Valley Nazarene Church. We have it set
- 24:30Speaker 11: up in the parking lot and we start at ten
- 24:32Speaker 11: o'clock and we have all the boxes made and we
- 24:35Speaker 11: just create a big assembly line and we pack these
- 24:37Speaker 11: boxes and we pack them up. But only do we
- 24:41Speaker 11: put food in the boxes. Every week we have five
- 24:44Speaker 11: shipments going out. But we also put an informational flyer
- 24:47Speaker 11: about something in the community going on, for instance, helping
- 24:52Speaker 11: folks contact with the Lines Club about if they need glasses.
- 24:56Speaker 11: And farmers' markets have different programs for kids to come
- 25:00Speaker 11: and shop in the farmers market.
- 25:02Speaker 5: So and we library programs.
- 25:04Speaker 11: So we always put an informational about about the about
- 25:08Speaker 11: the community in the boxes along.
- 25:10Speaker 5: With a book. Uh so we do put books.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Make Don Miller happy by the ways we.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Put books in the boxes as well.
- 25:17Speaker 11: So those those go out along with the food in
- 25:20Speaker 11: the in the summertime.
- 25:21Speaker 2: That's that's good stuff. How many people on your packing
- 25:24Speaker 2: day through the years, how many people do you have
- 25:27Speaker 2: there on site?
- 25:28Speaker 11: We will have three to four hundred people come and
- 25:31Speaker 11: I'll tell you it, many hands make light work. And
- 25:34Speaker 11: you know, we'll start at ten o'clock and I promise
- 25:37Speaker 11: you you'll be done by noon, and you we'll be
- 25:40Speaker 11: we'll be starting cleaning up within within within two hours.
- 25:43Speaker 11: It's a great time.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Uh.
- 25:45Speaker 11: We invite all community, all the students to come. We
- 25:48Speaker 11: have community service certificates for everybody.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Which is important. Kids have to have those to graduate.
- 25:52Speaker 11: Absolutely, and teams to come because it's truly teamwork. We've
- 25:57Speaker 11: got folks handing out boxes, putting items in the boxes.
- 26:01Speaker 5: We've got a job with what we say, we have a.
- 26:03Speaker 11: Job for everyone from two to ninety two. Okay, so
- 26:06Speaker 11: everybody can participate. And we're in Putnam County at the
- 26:09Speaker 11: Tayes Valley Nazarene Church on June the sixth, ten o'clock,
- 26:13Speaker 11: but then the following Saturday, if you can't make it
- 26:15Speaker 11: on the sixth, on the thirteenth, will be in Madison
- 26:19Speaker 11: and at the Madison Civic Center at ten o'clock as well,
- 26:22Speaker 11: doing it doing it again for the kids in Boon.
- 26:25Speaker 2: County and the people that are volunteering for this. As
- 26:28Speaker 2: you said, you have people from church groups that come out,
- 26:31Speaker 2: you have people from civic organizations, your rotary and kawanas,
- 26:34Speaker 2: things of that nature and all those. But this would
- 26:37Speaker 2: be great for businesses too. I mean, you know, little
- 26:39Speaker 2: little team building. I know the company that we do
- 26:41Speaker 2: a lot of that sort of stuff here. I know
- 26:43Speaker 2: the company my wife works were, they're always doing something
- 26:46Speaker 2: you know, out of the community as well, so would
- 26:50Speaker 2: be great, you know, just to hang out and it's
- 26:52Speaker 2: a little fun.
- 26:53Speaker 11: Come wear your shirts and come and uh and participate.
- 26:57Speaker 11: And but the impact that we that you're making on
- 27:00Speaker 11: the community is significant. You know, our mission is one
- 27:04Speaker 11: you know, we want to help you know, one family,
- 27:06Speaker 11: and but the feedback that we get these boxes are
- 27:10Speaker 11: so appreciated during the summer and helping tied families over
- 27:14Speaker 11: till till school starts. And you know this this year,
- 27:19Speaker 11: this this summer, we will will head another milestone for us.
- 27:23Speaker 11: We'll mail our sixty thousandth box since we started. You know,
- 27:26Speaker 11: we've supported over since we started, over seventeen thousand kids
- 27:31Speaker 11: over our first thirteen years. And that's not possible without
- 27:35Speaker 11: incredible community support that we have and you know, folks
- 27:38Speaker 11: coming out helping pack the boxes and the donation. So
- 27:42Speaker 11: we just can't thank the community enough for allowing us
- 27:46Speaker 11: to being a part of for everybody being a part
- 27:49Speaker 11: of backpack Buddy to help these kids.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And you folks can't see this on the radio, obviously,
- 27:53Speaker 2: but every year when I bring Doug in. He always
- 27:55Speaker 2: brings a box with him. Is that the same box
- 27:58Speaker 2: that you've been bringing all these years? Is that the
- 28:00Speaker 2: exact same box or did you do get a new
- 28:02Speaker 2: box over yere.
- 28:03Speaker 11: We make sure we check the dates on the food
- 28:06Speaker 11: and we update. We make sure the food gets that.
- 28:08Speaker 2: So how do you get the food? I mean, I
- 28:10Speaker 2: know you purchase a lot, but what's the process to
- 28:13Speaker 2: get the food?
- 28:13Speaker 5: We work with Kroger. We've worked with.
- 28:15Speaker 11: Kroger probably the last ten years, and they they place
- 28:19Speaker 11: the order for us and we work with them, and
- 28:21Speaker 11: they they're very generous with us with with their ordering
- 28:26Speaker 11: process and their storage and everything. And so we order
- 28:30Speaker 11: everything from Kroger because we've got a certain sized box
- 28:33Speaker 11: that that everything has to fit in. And for instance,
- 28:36Speaker 11: we'll put six cans of raviol in, three cans of soup,
- 28:39Speaker 11: can of fruit and vegetables, some meat, and also ramen noodles,
- 28:45Speaker 11: which you know are great packing material but they're also
- 28:47Speaker 11: the kid's favorite, and oatmeal and nutri grain bars.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Okay, and if people want people can't be there. I
- 28:54Speaker 2: know you said the next two Saturday, June sixth, and
- 28:57Speaker 2: then you're in Tays Valley at the Nazarene Church and
- 28:59Speaker 2: following you, we'll be in Boone County at the Madison
- 29:01Speaker 2: Civic Center. If people can't make it on those days
- 29:04Speaker 2: but they still want to help out, what can they do?
- 29:06Speaker 11: They can go to our website, backpackbuddy dot org and
- 29:11Speaker 11: that has all the information. It's got contact information that
- 29:14Speaker 11: reach out to me, and we've got some different QR
- 29:17Speaker 11: codes on there. If they'd like to make a donation
- 29:20Speaker 11: and then also learn more about the program, we'd love
- 29:23Speaker 11: to share what we've been able to accomplish. You know,
- 29:26Speaker 11: it's certainly not the silver bullet, but we believe that
- 29:29Speaker 11: we've got a system and program that really helps people.
- 29:32Speaker 11: And if there's other folks in other communities would like
- 29:35Speaker 11: to learn more about it, love to talk to them
- 29:38Speaker 11: about how the process that we've set up and how
- 29:42Speaker 11: it works and how we can maybe help them help
- 29:45Speaker 11: their kids in their community.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Now, if people want to come on either of those
- 29:49Speaker 2: days and to volunteer and be part of that three
- 29:52Speaker 2: to four hundred people that you're going to have those
- 29:54Speaker 2: two locations, do they need to let you know ahead
- 29:56Speaker 2: of time or can they just show up?
- 29:57Speaker 5: Just show up and show up. We'll start we'll start
- 30:00Speaker 5: right it.
- 30:01Speaker 11: We'll start right at ten o'clock on both days and
- 30:04Speaker 11: we will have like I said, we've we've got folks
- 30:07Speaker 11: that can We have folks tape boxes, we have chairs
- 30:10Speaker 11: for folks that if they need to sit down, and
- 30:13Speaker 11: they can hand out food and they can take away
- 30:17Speaker 11: the take.
- 30:17Speaker 5: Away all the extra stuff that we that we produce.
- 30:20Speaker 11: So we just love to have folks come out and
- 30:24Speaker 11: just and be there with us at ten o'clock.
- 30:27Speaker 5: And I promise.
- 30:27Speaker 11: You you'll be heading home, but just to give us two
- 30:30Speaker 11: hours and the impact that you'll make in some kids'
- 30:33Speaker 11: lives will be incredible. All right, and give us the
- 30:34Speaker 11: website again, Backpackbuddy dot org. All right, Doug, wish you
- 30:39Speaker 11: the best with everything. It's great stuff you're doing up there. Man,
- 30:41Speaker 11: Thanks a lot. We appreciate you.

- 34:15Speaker 14: Good morning. How are you.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. So what's going on tonight?
- 34:19Speaker 14: So we are kicking off our twenty twenty six night
- 34:22Speaker 14: markets here at Valley Park. We've had them for the
- 34:26Speaker 14: last several years and it's just kind of a way
- 34:29Speaker 14: for people to come together in a community and celebrate
- 34:32Speaker 14: the summer and just enjoyed evening out with a lot
- 34:34Speaker 14: of entertainment and shop. Some vendors grab something to eat
- 34:37Speaker 14: from the food trucks, and then we usually have something
- 34:41Speaker 14: that some kind of little extra thing, like a little
- 34:44Speaker 14: contest or something like that to go along with this theme.
- 34:47Speaker 14: We have, like I said, six May through October, and
- 34:51Speaker 14: tonight's team is Derby Night, so we will be doing
- 34:55Speaker 14: a Derby Hat contest and also stick horse races.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Now, when I got the info on this stick horse races,
- 35:04Speaker 2: that's exactly what the name implies, reader, right.
- 35:07Speaker 14: Yes, that's correct, it's just a little Some people call
- 35:10Speaker 14: them hobby horses, people call them stick horses. But you know,
- 35:14Speaker 14: you can pick one up I think like pretty much anywhere,
- 35:17Speaker 14: or if not, you can. I've seen people take a
- 35:19Speaker 14: pool noodle and make one, so anything will work.
- 35:24Speaker 2: I love the theme and you're doing because you can't
- 35:26Speaker 2: get enough Derby and you know we're still in the
- 35:27Speaker 2: month of May and May is Derby month, and I
- 35:29Speaker 2: know people go all out for the Derby parties and
- 35:32Speaker 2: kind of hang onto that fun a little bit with
- 35:34Speaker 2: the Derby hat contest. What does the winner get of
- 35:36Speaker 2: either one of these competition?
- 35:37Speaker 14: What they get bragging rights and we'll give them the preak,
- 35:41Speaker 14: a couple of pool passes for ways of fun, of course,
- 35:44Speaker 14: and then we have some awards to give for them.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Also talk about some of the vendors that you've got
- 35:50Speaker 2: there tonight.
- 35:51Speaker 14: So we have Triple B eatery food truck. She has
- 35:56Speaker 14: some amazing grilled cheese. My personal favorite is the Pepperoni
- 36:00Speaker 14: roll grilled cheese so good. We also have Elbotanas, which
- 36:05Speaker 14: is a Mexican food truck if you like Mexican food.
- 36:08Speaker 14: And then we have about twenty vendors in total, so
- 36:13Speaker 14: everything like crafty vendors, jewelry, that sort of thing, and
- 36:18Speaker 14: also like informational boost like from local organizations around the
- 36:22Speaker 14: community to kind of spread the word and what they
- 36:25Speaker 14: have to offer and what they do in the community.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Well, it's going to be a great night. And you
- 36:30Speaker 2: do these I guess monthly. You said through October, is.
- 36:33Speaker 14: That right, Yes, that's correct, we do it. It's typically
- 36:37Speaker 14: the fourth Thursday of the month. I think there's one
- 36:40Speaker 14: in September that's like awful week. But you know, we
- 36:44Speaker 14: have the dates posted on our Facebook page for all
- 36:49Speaker 14: of them, including all the scenes and everything, so we're
- 36:52Speaker 14: you know, excited to start them off. It's just kind
- 36:54Speaker 14: of like our kickoff to summer. Of course, of the
- 36:56Speaker 14: pool opened last weekend, and then this is just kind
- 37:00Speaker 14: of something we look forward to. It's pretty laid back,
- 37:02Speaker 14: you know, just kind of people hanging out, coming and
- 37:05Speaker 14: going and just enjoying being outside for a little bit.
- 37:08Speaker 14: And today it's supposed to be nice and funny and
- 37:10Speaker 14: it will be a nice evening to get out after
- 37:12Speaker 14: all the rain.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You've worked with meteorologist Brian Hughes our Metro
- 37:17Speaker 2: and Hews Meteorologists to make sure he's got he's guaranteed
- 37:20Speaker 2: you good weather for this event tonight. And as a
- 37:23Speaker 2: side note, I'll say that Rob Reel from our sister station,
- 37:25Speaker 2: Superstar Country ninety six one KWS is going to be
- 37:28Speaker 2: their live and so you got to put up with Rob.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You know that, right.
- 37:33Speaker 14: I heard that. I was listening to it the other day,
- 37:35Speaker 14: so I heard him say he was going to be here.
- 37:37Speaker 14: We're excited to have him.
- 37:38Speaker 2: No, you're not. You won't be trust me. No, I'm kidding.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I'm kidding Rob. Rob's like me, is a good time
- 37:44Speaker 2: no matter where he goes, and I want to Rob
- 37:46Speaker 2: will be. Let me tell you something about real He
- 37:48Speaker 2: probably will be one of those people that if he's
- 37:51Speaker 2: not in the stick horse race, he'll probably enter the
- 37:53Speaker 2: derby hat competition. He just likes to have fun. He's
- 37:55Speaker 2: just walking fun.
- 37:57Speaker 14: Well that's good, that's what that's what we're hoping for,
- 38:00Speaker 14: to have a good time.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Well, i've got you on here. You did mention the
- 38:03Speaker 2: pool and everything Waves of Fun. Tell us what's going
- 38:06Speaker 2: on there because there may be people, believe it or not,
- 38:09Speaker 2: who may have never been there. I mean it's hard
- 38:11Speaker 2: to believe because I live right in the middle of
- 38:13Speaker 2: Tays Valley and I know how many people go to
- 38:15Speaker 2: that think but for people that don't know talk about it.
- 38:19Speaker 14: So Waves of Fun is obviously our pool, and it
- 38:23Speaker 14: has a wave machine and something new this year. We
- 38:27Speaker 14: have it to where we can change how the waves are,
- 38:30Speaker 14: so we're kind of doing that this year. That's kind
- 38:32Speaker 14: of something new. In the past, they've always just turned
- 38:35Speaker 14: them on and they've always been the same type of waves.
- 38:37Speaker 14: So there's a variety of that. We opened last weekend
- 38:40Speaker 14: from Moral Day weekend, that's just tradition, and then we're
- 38:43Speaker 14: closed this week from Tuesday to Friday, and then we
- 38:46Speaker 14: open Saturday and we'll be open for the season. Of course,
- 38:49Speaker 14: penning weather and all that good stuff. But it is
- 38:52Speaker 14: the largest wave pool in southern West Virginia, and it's
- 38:56Speaker 14: you know, there's people that drive, I have people that
- 38:59Speaker 14: we have people that come here from two hours away.
- 39:01Speaker 14: It's just you know, enjoy the way and it's something different.
- 39:04Speaker 14: Of course, they don't run the whole time, so people
- 39:06Speaker 14: can you know, enjoy swimming and just like the calm water.
- 39:09Speaker 14: And then of course the ways are just kind of fun.
- 39:11Speaker 14: We rent the tubes, so if you want to just
- 39:13Speaker 14: kind of ride on the tube, then you can do that.
- 39:16Speaker 14: And a couple of years ago we start you can
- 39:19Speaker 14: bring in your own food and drink. We just check
- 39:21Speaker 14: everything at the door to make sure you know, no
- 39:23Speaker 14: alcohol or glass or anything like that, and it's it's
- 39:27Speaker 14: a lot of fun. People really enjoy it, and we
- 39:30Speaker 14: are looking to have some events this summer after hours events.
- 39:34Speaker 14: Last year we had a summer ween where we played
- 39:36Speaker 14: a Halloween movie. I think it was in the end
- 39:40Speaker 14: of July or the beginning of August. So we're looking
- 39:42Speaker 14: to do some things like that this year. And then
- 39:44Speaker 14: we did pool side Pages last year, which was and
- 39:47Speaker 14: after hours adults only to where they could just come
- 39:50Speaker 14: and float. We didn't turn the ways on for that
- 39:52Speaker 14: and read and just enjoy it. I mean there were
- 39:53Speaker 14: some people that didn't read. They just enjoyed the nice,
- 39:55Speaker 14: calm evening. And so you know, we're looking forward to
- 39:59Speaker 14: adding some events some things like that this year also.
- 40:02Speaker 2: And let me just throw this in here, as I said,
- 40:04Speaker 2: somebody who lives in Tays Valley, if you've not been
- 40:06Speaker 2: to Valley Park itself lately, it is one of the
- 40:09Speaker 2: busiest spots in the entire Kanaw Valley. I mean just
- 40:12Speaker 2: a simple drive through with all the fields and you
- 40:15Speaker 2: mentioned with with with the swimming and the wave pools
- 40:18Speaker 2: and all that other stuff. In addition to what's always
- 40:20Speaker 2: going on at the valley Park Conference Center. You guys
- 40:23Speaker 2: always have something going on there. Valley Park is kind
- 40:25Speaker 2: of the place to be.
- 40:28Speaker 14: Yeah. So last year actually we got numbers in and
- 40:31Speaker 14: there was over two hundred and fifty thousand people that
- 40:33Speaker 14: visited Valley Park last year, So that's these are huge numbers.
- 40:39Speaker 2: And people use the conference Center for a variety of things.
- 40:41Speaker 2: I mean, as I said, there's always there's a cupcake
- 40:44Speaker 2: festival there. There's always some sort of event I mean
- 40:48Speaker 2: pretty much continually going on inside the conference center.
- 40:52Speaker 14: Yeah, we have events. I mean of course people go
- 40:54Speaker 14: rent it. We do weddings, We do parties. We just
- 40:58Speaker 14: came through we kind of graduated parties and then we
- 41:01Speaker 14: have our own events here. We yes, there's something going on,
- 41:05Speaker 14: Like there's a public event almost at least once a month,
- 41:08Speaker 14: even through the winter times. We do public competitions like
- 41:12Speaker 14: things to kind of just get people out and get together.
- 41:14Speaker 14: We have Majong Night every Thursday evening for people to
- 41:18Speaker 14: come in and play or learn to play majong. This
- 41:21Speaker 14: was something that somebody had asked, reached out and asked,
- 41:24Speaker 14: and we're you know, always welcome ideas. So if anybody
- 41:28Speaker 14: has ideas, they can reach out to us and we'll
- 41:30Speaker 14: try to make it work. But definitely we're just trying
- 41:33Speaker 14: to add more and more stuff for people to have
- 41:35Speaker 14: in the community, especially with you know, sometimes people can't
- 41:39Speaker 14: go on vacation or whatever, so they kind of come
- 41:41Speaker 14: here to like enjoy what we have to offer and
- 41:44Speaker 14: you know, whether it be the pool we're just getting outside.
- 41:46Speaker 14: Of course, we have the disc golf course which is
- 41:48Speaker 14: ranked number one on the East Coast several years in
- 41:52Speaker 14: a row. So you know, we we just kind of
- 41:56Speaker 14: try to have something for everyone to enjoy, and I
- 41:58Speaker 14: think that people do. I never knew how many people
- 42:00Speaker 14: were just came to the park to walk or you know,
- 42:02Speaker 14: walk and walk their dogs or play, you know, bring
- 42:05Speaker 14: their kids to the playground until I started working here,
- 42:08Speaker 14: and I was like, wow, I didn't realize. I mean, yeah,
- 42:11Speaker 14: how you go to the park, but I just never
- 42:12Speaker 14: realized how many people. So it's definitely it's definitely very
- 42:16Speaker 14: well used, which is great and that's.
- 42:17Speaker 2: What we love to hear. Let's go back to the
- 42:19Speaker 2: to the night market again. What time does it start tonight?
- 42:22Speaker 14: So it starts at six o'clock and six point thirty
- 42:25Speaker 14: is our live entertainment which will be a blue Graph
- 42:28Speaker 14: music to go on theme with Derby. It's from Kentucky
- 42:31Speaker 14: and the End Crowd is the band that is playing
- 42:35Speaker 14: this evening. And also of course a shout out to
- 42:38Speaker 14: the Family Wealth Group for being our presenting sponsor for
- 42:42Speaker 14: all the night markets this year. And then of course
- 42:44Speaker 14: the b v RC Media who is our media sponsor.
- 42:47Speaker 14: So we appreciate you guys.
- 42:49Speaker 2: As I say, KWS is going to be there tonight,
- 42:51Speaker 2: and I understand that, uh just about every time you
- 42:53Speaker 2: have one of these will be with one of our
- 42:54Speaker 2: different stations will be there. So I'm looking forward to
- 42:58Speaker 2: I'll be stopping by tonight. You know, the put and
- 43:00Speaker 2: County Chamber of Commerce has got a business after hours,
- 43:02Speaker 2: but you can certainly do both things because that starts
- 43:04Speaker 2: at five, so you can certainly what That's what I
- 43:06Speaker 2: plan on doing is going to the business after hours
- 43:08Speaker 2: and then stopping by and seeing you folks tonight. And
- 43:11Speaker 2: of course you guys do a great job with your
- 43:13Speaker 2: social media. Just go to the Valley Park Facebook page
- 43:16Speaker 2: and you can get all the information that you need there.
- 43:19Speaker 2: And Rita, I appreciate you being on the show this morning.
- 43:21Speaker 2: I'll see you and Justin and everybody tonight.
- 43:23Speaker 14: Okay, well, appreciate you having me and we'll see you
- 43:26Speaker 14: this evening.
- 43:26Speaker 2: All right again, the everything gets underway tonight at six o'clock.
- 43:30Speaker 2: And there's no charge for admission. Now, obviously, if you
- 43:33Speaker 2: are going to take in, you know, order something off

- 46:34Speaker 17: people have to work the next day. Well I can
- 46:37Speaker 17: I can answer, I think for the folks at Valley
- 46:40Speaker 17: parking for several other folks. I understand what you are saying,
- 46:43Speaker 17: and people do have to work. But number one starts
- 46:45Speaker 17: at six and it's over in a couple of hours,
- 46:48Speaker 17: so it's not like you're going to be there all night.
- 46:50Speaker 17: And it's very difficult to plan things on the weekends.
- 46:54Speaker 17: And as I mentioned with Valley Park, I don't know
- 46:58Speaker 17: how they could pull off something like this as big
- 47:01Speaker 17: as this thing is. When all the fields are being used,
- 47:04Speaker 17: people are at the wave pool and so on and
- 47:05Speaker 17: so forth. It meets mountain trails and everything that's around
- 47:08Speaker 17: in that general vicinity. I don't know how they can
- 47:11Speaker 17: pull this off on the weekend, to be honest with you,
- 47:13Speaker 17: but it is a good point. But people are pulled
- 47:16Speaker 17: in eighty five thousand different directions on the weekends. I
- 47:18Speaker 17: know I am, and I know you probably are too.
- 47:21Speaker 2: But it's a good point. I'll make sure that the
- 47:24Speaker 2: folks in Valley Park take that under advisement. Programming note
