Latest / The Overland Journal Podcast / Why Full-Size Trucks Should Be Seriously Considered for Overlanding
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your
- 0:06Speaker 1: host Scott Brady, and I'm here with my co host Matt.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Scott and Matt, what are we going to talk about today?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Why you should never buy a Toyota Ta Coma or
- 0:16Speaker 2: alternative title, why full sized trucks or something you should
- 0:20Speaker 2: seriously consider? I mean, I think the biggest problem that
- 0:24Speaker 2: a lot of Overlanders have is carrying too much crap.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And I think the only reason that we say you shouldn't,
- 0:32Speaker 2: I mean, like technically, the technical reason as to why
- 0:34Speaker 2: you shouldn't is your over grossed vehicle weight rating on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the on for whatever platform you've chose. And a lot
- 0:40Speaker 2: of these small trucks, you know, you're talking sub thousand
- 0:44Speaker 2: pounds for some, you're talking eleven hundred, twelve hundred, you know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: Gladiator and Ranger, like they get better, they get better
- 0:53Speaker 2: when properly configured sixteen seventeen hundred pounds, and.
- 0:58Speaker 3: That really quickly goes.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It does that that's not including people, that's not including
- 1:03Speaker 2: the stuff that people need. Where you look at these
- 1:06Speaker 2: full size trucks and you're like doubling, tripling, quadrupling.
- 1:11Speaker 1: That you could put the compact pickup in the back
- 1:14Speaker 1: of the full size.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, that much payload.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So if you are somebody who literally brings the kitchen sink,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I guess everybody in America with with with trucks kind
- 1:26Speaker 2: of has a thing. Like I'm a Ford guy. I
- 1:27Speaker 2: don't I don't know. I would say it's a Ram
- 1:30Speaker 2: for me. Yeah, Like I'm a I'm a Ford guy,
- 1:33Speaker 2: but I wouldn't buy a Ford. Right now, I think
- 1:35Speaker 2: that the rams are fantastic for off road use. I mean,
- 1:38Speaker 2: they don't get the rear locker, but the coils and everything,
- 1:41Speaker 2: they just they really seem like a big jeep, I guess.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But and that makes sense because you've got the same
- 1:49Speaker 1: company that designs jeeps, right, Yeah, so there's certainly some
- 1:53Speaker 1: heritage that's there.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so let's let's start off on I guess, why why.
- 2:00Speaker 3: A full size?
- 2:02Speaker 2: You know, we've already talked about payload, but let's also
- 2:04Speaker 2: talk about how these things are built, right, I mean,
- 2:07Speaker 2: full sized trucks are built for everything from a mind
- 2:10Speaker 2: site to a construction site. Like they have to be
- 2:12Speaker 2: able to put up with a guy that isn't treating
- 2:15Speaker 2: this like an enthusiast vehicle. They're treating it like a
- 2:18Speaker 2: piece of equipment. They're treating it like a piece of
- 2:21Speaker 2: it's a commercial grade piece of equipment. Yeah, and they're
- 2:25Speaker 2: just built pretty tough. Like let's think even jeeps, right,
- 2:30Speaker 2: Jeeps are relatively durable. These days, you're still upgrading tyrods.
- 2:34Speaker 2: A lot of people are still upgrading axles to go
- 2:37Speaker 2: to bigger tires, Like you know, going to forties on
- 2:39Speaker 2: the Gladiator is now the big thing at a cost
- 2:42Speaker 2: of twenty thousand dollars for Dinah Trek axles, where you're
- 2:46Speaker 2: actually getting something stronger on a twenty five hundred that
- 2:49Speaker 2: will fit forties with av fender flares out of the box.
- 2:53Speaker 3: It will.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And we're intentionally excluding like the fifteen hundred trucks. I
- 2:59Speaker 1: think a four one fifty is a great vehicle. Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 1: a Dodge Ram fifteen hundred absolutely great vehicle, but they
- 3:08Speaker 1: aren't that much different in payload from like a Gladiator
- 3:12Speaker 1: or a Ranger. But then you have a much bigger vehicle.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So we're really focusing on those three quarter ton one
- 3:18Speaker 1: ton plus trucks that can be built to be super
- 3:22Speaker 1: capable but then also carry four thousand, three thousand, five
- 3:28Speaker 1: thousand pounds stuff.
- 3:29Speaker 2: That's actually capable of, you know, an actual conversion for
- 3:34Speaker 2: exhibition use. I mean, I guess I've just I've mentioned
- 3:37Speaker 2: it before, but I've seen so many people that build
- 3:40Speaker 2: up tacomas. You know, a good buddy of mine just
- 3:45Speaker 2: build up, built up a high lux you know, put
- 3:49Speaker 2: a four wheel camper with a flatbed on it, and
- 3:51Speaker 2: it like didn't move uphills because it has like eighty horsepower, right,
- 3:55Speaker 2: you know, replaced it with a tundra. And again to
- 3:59Speaker 2: talk about that kind of I guess we're calling them
- 4:02Speaker 2: half ton trucks, even though some of these things can
- 4:04Speaker 2: tow thirteen thousand pounds. Now maybe that's a different podcast,
- 4:09Speaker 2: but you know, a lot of these trucks share a cab,
- 4:14Speaker 2: share a lot of components.
- 4:15Speaker 3: The F one fifty and the F two to fifty
- 4:17Speaker 3: have the same cab.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I want to say, the RAM now has a different cab,
- 4:21Speaker 2: but eventually it will have the fifteen hundred cab because
- 4:24Speaker 2: it's just it's really nice.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's really really nice.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so fifteen hundred whatever we're going to call those things,
- 4:30Speaker 2: we'll definitely chat about that later. But you know, there's
- 4:33Speaker 2: these things are durable, They have a lot of storage
- 4:36Speaker 2: when you're you're you're jumping from five foot maybe six
- 4:40Speaker 2: foot beds on the you know, the quarter ton trucks. Again,
- 4:44Speaker 2: these things are all these numbers mean nothing, but you know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: you're jumping into a wider bed, you're jumping to a
- 4:52Speaker 2: longer bed, you know, and that just gives you, i think,
- 4:55Speaker 2: the flexibility of options.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Or even doing a cab chassis which gives you totally
- 5:00Speaker 1: totally flat rails. It allows you to fit custom camper
- 5:04Speaker 1: units like from Nimble or earth Cruiser. And when we
- 5:08Speaker 1: talk about reliability and durability, we take a lot into
- 5:12Speaker 1: consideration around use. So durability is different from reliability. It's
- 5:18Speaker 1: how long will this thing endure at full payload. So
- 5:23Speaker 1: if you take a full sized truck and you put
- 5:25Speaker 1: a camper on the back of it, particularly a thirty
- 5:27Speaker 1: five hundred, you're so far under gross vehicle weight that
- 5:31Speaker 1: the vehicles not being stressed, not at all. It's it's
- 5:34Speaker 1: used to carrying cords of wood, right, I mean, it's
- 5:37Speaker 1: we're talking about not overdoing it. And that's the challenge
- 5:41Speaker 1: with a lot of these small pickups is that by
- 5:44Speaker 1: the time you get them done and you put people
- 5:46Speaker 1: and food and water and the dog in it. You
- 5:48Speaker 1: could be one thousand pounds over gross vehicle weight quite easily.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I mean, you know we've used we always kind of
- 5:55Speaker 2: use it to come I guess as the comparison, they're
- 5:57Speaker 2: about a twelve hundred pound payload. Well then you put
- 6:01Speaker 2: you know, one hundred and fifty pound bumper on the front,
- 6:03Speaker 2: you put a winch on the front, bumpers, sliders, all
- 6:07Speaker 2: the stuff that these vehicles don't come equipped with, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: well you haven't even put your ten to your people
- 6:13Speaker 2: in it, and you're you're pretty pretty much there. Also,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I think fuel range is a big thing. You know,
- 6:19Speaker 2: a lot of these diesel trucks get pretty darn good
- 6:22Speaker 2: gas mileage. A lot of the you know quarter ton
- 6:25Speaker 2: stuff that I've driven, even my Gladiator, you know, the
- 6:30Speaker 2: Gladiator varies wildly between you know, fifteen miles to the
- 6:36Speaker 2: gallon and twenty miles to the gallon.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But my F two fifty I.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Had before this, and this was even this was the
- 6:43Speaker 2: older generation F two fifty, I could get eighteen in
- 6:45Speaker 2: that like all day long when yeah loaded up, you know,
- 6:50Speaker 2: it just it really wasn't a wasn't an issue. And
- 6:53Speaker 2: that thing had had a fifty gallon tank.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I remember I had a long term test a Dodge Ran.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'm twenty five hundred with forties on it, so it
- 7:02Speaker 1: was an AEV project vehicle and it had the diesel,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and I just remember doing I was driving it back
- 7:10Speaker 1: from Montana and I'm just cruising down the road. I
- 7:12Speaker 1: don't want to overdo it. I mean, it is a
- 7:14Speaker 1: truck on forties, right, but I'm just cruising down the road.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And I remember after the second or third fill up,
- 7:20Speaker 1: which is that's all it took about to get back
- 7:22Speaker 1: to Arizona. But I remember looking down at the gas mileage.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I was getting almost eighteen miles of the gallon. I'm
- 7:27Speaker 1: far in a truck with forty inch tire. That's incredible,
- 7:31Speaker 1: like a seventeen point five seventeen point six.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Average miles per gallon.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Now this was mostly on the highway, but this is
- 7:38Speaker 1: a huge vehicle with a proper bumper and Winch snorkel,
- 7:43Speaker 1: forty inch tall tires, tons of ground clearance, and we're
- 7:47Speaker 1: starting to see more and more of them on the
- 7:49Speaker 1: trail because I think what's happened is the jeeps have
- 7:51Speaker 1: gotten really big too, so that if you look at
- 7:54Speaker 1: a at a gladiator that's one hundred and thirty something
- 7:58Speaker 1: inch wheelbase. You can get regular cab full sized trucks
- 8:02Speaker 1: that are around one hundred and thirty something into yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and they're not that much wider.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think that the use of space is arguably much
- 8:09Speaker 2: better on a full sized truck because you're you're pushing
- 8:12Speaker 2: the cab all the way out, just just past the
- 8:15Speaker 2: past the tires who are on the jeep. You know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: you have these fall with axles that you know you're
- 8:20Speaker 2: then space and the tires out and that you know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: the the edge of the tire to the edge of
- 8:24Speaker 2: the door can be twelve to eighteen inches. Sure, that's
- 8:27Speaker 2: space that you know. I have to say in the jeep,
- 8:32Speaker 2: I would I would love to have the capability that
- 8:34Speaker 2: that vehicles offers with that use of space.
- 8:37Speaker 3: And that's what's called a power way.
- 8:39Speaker 1: That's right exactly, and I think you end up with
- 8:42Speaker 1: a lot of flexibility in the full sized trucks. You
- 8:44Speaker 1: can add additional fuel tanks. I mean that's one of
- 8:48Speaker 1: the challenges. All of the smaller trucks except for except
- 8:51Speaker 1: for the Chevy Bison, you can't get with a diesel,
- 8:55Speaker 1: so you can't really add auxiliary fuel tanks because of
- 8:58Speaker 1: EPA regulations, whereas these full sized trucks will have replacement
- 9:02Speaker 1: main tanks, they'll have auxiliary tanks. You can end up
- 9:05Speaker 1: with a thousand mile range easy on those vehicles. Yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 1: And the difference was that is they just allow it
- 9:11Speaker 1: for diesel. It's a fuel that doesn't much stable.
- 9:14Speaker 2: It's much more stable, so you can get replacement tanks,
- 9:17Speaker 2: you can get transfer tanks, you can Titan makes this
- 9:21Speaker 2: spare tire thing, I want to say, it's forty gallons
- 9:24Speaker 2: that replaces your spare tire Perfectentimes that's a cavity that
- 9:29Speaker 2: isn't used when you are building a large vehicle because
- 9:32Speaker 2: you can't fit the you can't fit the you know,
- 9:35Speaker 2: larger spare tire up underneath there.
- 9:38Speaker 3: That's the thing that I miss. I miss that fuel range. Yeah,
- 9:41Speaker 3: that's really helpful.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I miss seeing a thousand miles of range out of
- 9:47Speaker 2: a truck like that is that is just so cool.
- 9:51Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean I don't know.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean, as a as a guy that just built
- 9:58Speaker 2: a gladiator that's a full sized stuff before, I kind
- 10:04Speaker 2: of know that my next step will be a prospector. Yeah,
- 10:07Speaker 2: because they're not actually that much bigger, and you're just
- 10:11Speaker 2: getting you get a lot for your money.
- 10:13Speaker 1: They're very affordable if you look at the In fact,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I did that not that long ago, because the last
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the manual transmission full sized trucks was ending with
- 10:22Speaker 1: last year. I think it was like the twenty eighteen
- 10:25Speaker 1: model was the last that you could get a Dodge
- 10:27Speaker 1: Ram with a six speed manual. And I remember looking
- 10:30Speaker 1: at that and fully specked out with a diesel and everything.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I was just over fifty grand, and I'm thinking that's
- 10:36Speaker 1: the price of a gladiator for a lot more truck.
- 10:39Speaker 2: A lot more truck. And you know they're discounting gladiators
- 10:42Speaker 2: now too. I think it's important to, you know, just
- 10:45Speaker 2: to say that, you know, Toyota plays a totally different
- 10:48Speaker 2: game with they're pricing than everybody else. Does you see
- 10:51Speaker 2: a Toyota for a fifty thousand dollars sticker, you're probably
- 10:55Speaker 2: paying fifty thousand dollars for it.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You see a Ford truck.
- 10:59Speaker 2: For fifty dollars, you might be able to get it
- 11:01Speaker 2: for thirty five at some dealership. You know, there's a
- 11:04Speaker 2: lot of that. There's a bit of the game which
- 11:06Speaker 2: I don't know. As a millennial, I kind of kind
- 11:08Speaker 2: of hate that. I just want to be like, this
- 11:10Speaker 2: is my price, this is my price. The rest of
- 11:12Speaker 2: the time you're literally you're just screwing me. So I
- 11:16Speaker 2: don't like that about the experience of buying one of
- 11:18Speaker 2: these things. But I want to say, it's like Dennis
- 11:20Speaker 2: Dillon up in Idaho is who Mario Donovan and Adventure
- 11:24Speaker 2: Trailers gets all of his trucks from, because they're just
- 11:27Speaker 2: they specialize in people flying in buying them. They're out
- 11:31Speaker 2: the door, and it's really easy, and they keep the
- 11:34Speaker 2: volume up, they keep the volume and yeah, ten fifteen
- 11:37Speaker 2: thousand dollars off, isn't that unreasonable to see? That's cool,
- 11:43Speaker 2: especially right now. They're also doing like zero percent for
- 11:46Speaker 2: eight thousand years for.
- 11:48Speaker 3: The rest of your life.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You pay no interest, So I mean, there's your price
- 11:53Speaker 2: savings right there.
- 11:54Speaker 3: But it's a great deal.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And when we think about overland travel international travel, which
- 12:01Speaker 1: is something that Matt and I focus on, you can
- 12:04Speaker 1: still fit a full sized truck in a container. You
- 12:07Speaker 1: can fit it in the container with a four whole
- 12:08Speaker 1: camper if it's a high top container, so it's you
- 12:12Speaker 1: can still ship a vehicle around the world roll on,
- 12:15Speaker 1: roll off, And we have to remember that even in
- 12:18Speaker 1: the developing world, they still get goods and services throughout
- 12:22Speaker 1: the country, and that may be done with a Mitsubishi Fuso,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but a Fuso is still the size of a full
- 12:27Speaker 1: size US truck, So their roads are going to still
- 12:31Speaker 1: be serviced by these mid size or they call them
- 12:36Speaker 1: like a mid range utility vehicle. So you're going to
- 12:39Speaker 1: be able to get a full sized truck into most
- 12:43Speaker 1: of the routes around the world. Think of mining vehicles
- 12:46Speaker 1: and NGOs and all of that that are hauling goods
- 12:50Speaker 1: and services. They're going to all be larger vehicles. So
- 12:53Speaker 1: I don't think that a full size is that much
- 12:55Speaker 1: of a restriction.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Now.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Where I do find the full size to be a
- 12:58Speaker 1: consideration is either in the really big cities or in
- 13:02Speaker 1: the small villages. So if you go into a colonial
- 13:06Speaker 1: village in somewhere in Central America or South America, they
- 13:09Speaker 1: were never designed for a vehicle that big, and you
- 13:12Speaker 1: probably won't be able to fit down the streets. You're
- 13:14Speaker 1: gonna have to park that thing outside of town and
- 13:16Speaker 1: walk or take a taxi or a tuck tuck or
- 13:18Speaker 1: something like that. But you're not going to be able
- 13:21Speaker 1: to take a full sized vehicle into the small village
- 13:26Speaker 1: villages in the cities. You're gonna have to time it right,
- 13:29Speaker 1: so goods and services come in late at night or
- 13:32Speaker 1: early in the morning. That's when you can drive a
- 13:34Speaker 1: full sized vehicle. If you're trying to navigate Lumba Tar
- 13:37Speaker 1: traffic at five o'clock in the afternoon, you're gonna wish
- 13:41Speaker 1: you were you were dead. I did it in the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Suzuki chimney and wished I was dead. So you have
- 13:48Speaker 1: to really be mindful of the size of the vehicle
- 13:51Speaker 1: depending on where you're traveling with it.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, everything is getting bigger, I think these days,
- 13:58Speaker 2: and that's definitely the thing that I dislike. I mean,
- 14:02Speaker 2: I I like smaller vehicles for traveling. I know that
- 14:06Speaker 2: the Gladiator has those full with axles and stuff. But
- 14:09Speaker 2: in the same way that I do complain about, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 2: the cab not being matched to those, it does just
- 14:15Speaker 2: make it so much more maneuverable, and especially the trail
- 14:18Speaker 2: lot smaller, especially on the trail. But yeah, I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think the biggest risk to a full sized truck
- 14:26Speaker 2: for an overlain traveler. I mean, while they are durable,
- 14:31Speaker 2: you know they they definitely there are I think they've
- 14:34Speaker 2: gotten better, but there are reliability.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Issues with these.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Let's let's use the Ford seven to three, which I
- 14:41Speaker 2: want to the motor had been sold previously, but let's
- 14:43Speaker 2: talk about that ninety nine to three oh four generation
- 14:48Speaker 2: really really sought after the generation just after that with
- 14:53Speaker 2: the six leader, like you can't touch yeah, I mean
- 14:56Speaker 2: you know, they had EGR issues, they had turbo issues issues,
- 15:00Speaker 2: a lot of things, and a lot of times to
- 15:02Speaker 2: service some of the some of the components on all
- 15:05Speaker 2: of these diesel engines, you you have to pull the
- 15:09Speaker 2: cab off. So that's like what's always scared me about
- 15:12Speaker 2: like an earth roamer, for example, because like earth roamers
- 15:15Speaker 2: are very expensive, they're coming down in price on the
- 15:20Speaker 2: used market to maybe where I could start to see
- 15:23Speaker 2: value for myself on them. But man, what happens when
- 15:28Speaker 2: like a rear main seal goes, which is a two
- 15:31Speaker 2: dollars part, what happens to the truck? I I don't know,
- 15:35Speaker 2: I mean, like, is that something that some guru mechanic
- 15:38Speaker 2: can fix? But I've always been told that you have
- 15:41Speaker 2: to take the entire cab off sure, and that is
- 15:44Speaker 2: not something that somebody's going to know how to do.
- 15:46Speaker 3: And you know, did Jack a stand right? Yeah?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Or wherever wherever you're at, And that brings up I mean,
- 15:53Speaker 2: are they a global platform?
- 15:55Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I mean I get parts overnighted from my land Cruiser
- 15:59Speaker 2: from Dubai and like two days for twelve dollars. So
- 16:03Speaker 2: I don't think the parts are necessarily an issue. I
- 16:05Speaker 2: think it's finding somebody that actually knows how to work
- 16:08Speaker 2: on them. And unfortunately, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, they don't really
- 16:13Speaker 2: sell these these platforms outside of North America. You're going
- 16:18Speaker 2: to find them all throughout throughout you know, Mexico and
- 16:21Speaker 2: Central America. Obviously, Canada a little bit in South America does,
- 16:26Speaker 2: but a lot of those are made there, and they'll
- 16:30Speaker 2: run a completely different power train. Like I remember when
- 16:34Speaker 2: I was running Panama Passage just must have been ten
- 16:36Speaker 2: years ago in Panama and Argentinian couple came through and
- 16:39Speaker 2: you know, a super duty but it had like a
- 16:42Speaker 2: two liter engine in it, and I'm like, wait, that
- 16:47Speaker 2: cannot be fun. I mean, these things need a big
- 16:50Speaker 2: motor and they're really fun when they have that big motor.
- 16:53Speaker 1: But I mean, I think you kind of once you
- 16:55Speaker 1: decide to bring an obscure vehicle around the world, you
- 16:59Speaker 1: have to plan for the fact that you may have
- 17:01Speaker 1: to not only fly the parts in, but you may
- 17:04Speaker 1: have to fly the mechanic in to fix it potentially. Yeah,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and that's a consideration. If you've got a very modern
- 17:11Speaker 1: vehicle that can't be self serviced or requires special tools
- 17:15Speaker 1: or special training or even special instruments in order to
- 17:18Speaker 1: do that service, You've kind of just got to from
- 17:20Speaker 1: the very beginning realize that I'm not driving a sprinter
- 17:24Speaker 1: that is sold in almost every country. I'm driving a
- 17:27Speaker 1: vehicle that's primarily sold in Canada and the United States.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And if I am in the middle of Southeast Asia,
- 17:34Speaker 1: or if I'm crossing Russia, it might be possible that
- 17:37Speaker 1: I need to fly somebody in.
- 17:39Speaker 3: With the parts to do the service.
- 17:41Speaker 2: I mean, you know, luckily, the parts for these things
- 17:43Speaker 2: aren't terribly expensed, No they're not. You know, they make
- 17:47Speaker 2: millions of them, so there's economies of scale there. But
- 17:51Speaker 2: you know, I think, you know, for people that are
- 17:54Speaker 2: listening to this podcast that you know, maybe they want
- 17:57Speaker 2: to do, you know, the pan American high Way or
- 18:00Speaker 2: they want to really explore the US and Canada. Perfect.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Perfect I mean like I love the new rams. You
- 18:07Speaker 2: can get like a sixty gallon fuel tank from the factory.
- 18:10Speaker 2: I don't know, I love fuel range. It's just one
- 18:14Speaker 2: less thing to have to worry about.
- 18:15Speaker 3: It takes a lot of stress out of it.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Yeah, And honestly, with these with these vehicles getting bigger
- 18:20Speaker 2: and bigger and bigger, it's just less that you have
- 18:23Speaker 2: to stop to try and find that little gas station.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And you've got to do some research yourself on the
- 18:29Speaker 1: legalities of making changes to these modern diesels. But there
- 18:33Speaker 1: are kits available for some of these diesels. They are
- 18:36Speaker 1: called farm kits. They remove the catalytic converter, they remove
- 18:41Speaker 1: the deaf system because they're designed to be used off
- 18:44Speaker 1: the road only. Once you've left the United States, EPA
- 18:48Speaker 1: no longer applies, So do some research, understand the legalities
- 18:52Speaker 1: of the countries that you're going into. But it is
- 18:55Speaker 1: possible to still use these modern diesels, yes, even with
- 18:57Speaker 1: factory parts.
- 18:59Speaker 3: That's right. Has Ford sells the six.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Seven in the United States at one power rating, and
- 19:04Speaker 2: they sell it in Mexico at another power rating. And
- 19:07Speaker 2: it doesn't require death. I haven't looked into that in
- 19:10Speaker 2: a few years. That was for my twenty sixteen. But
- 19:14Speaker 2: I never really advocate for deleting emissions because it's like,
- 19:19Speaker 2: I don't know, like a two undred and fifty thousand
- 19:20Speaker 2: dollars fine, and the environment is something that we should save.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you definitely don't want to do it in the
- 19:25Speaker 1: United States, but there are provisions for some of this
- 19:28Speaker 1: for international travel. It's worth looking into if you're concerned
- 19:32Speaker 1: about taking one of these diesels internationally.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And we also have things like the you know, the
- 19:37Speaker 2: Ford F two fifteen three fifteen now offer a seven
- 19:40Speaker 2: to three gas engine really compact push rod V eight huge,
- 19:46Speaker 2: should be super reliable. It's I mean, it's a big
- 19:50Speaker 2: it's a replacement for their V ten. It's a big,
- 19:53Speaker 2: just earth moving, earth moving, unstressed engine. You know that
- 19:58Speaker 2: the six' four that's in the the. Rams they've been
- 20:01Speaker 2: making that motor. Forever, yeah those hemies are. Great you
- 20:04Speaker 2: don't have to have the. DIESEL i do think if
- 20:06Speaker 2: you're staying In North, AMERICA i don't, know like having
- 20:10Speaker 2: nearly a thousand foot pounds of torque is, awesome kind
- 20:13Speaker 2: of magical, right it's really, great you, know and again
- 20:17Speaker 2: a lot of times these look at what you're. Doing you,
- 20:21Speaker 2: KNOW i like big tires on my vehicles because My
- 20:26Speaker 2: greyhound doesn't like. Bumps and you, know if you're Again
- 20:30Speaker 2: i'm using The tacoma Or ranger or, anything you're going
- 20:33Speaker 2: to struggle to put thirty threes in those, vehicles and
- 20:35Speaker 2: you're going to spend some money to do. It you
- 20:38Speaker 2: might be able to fit a thirty seven on a
- 20:39Speaker 2: lot of these new, TRUCKS i mean eighties putting forties on.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Them they are and they handle it just. Fine so
- 20:47Speaker 1: it's incredible how well they handle. It, Yeah and one
- 20:49Speaker 1: of the THINGS i noticed the first TIME i tested
- 20:53Speaker 1: properly tested a full sized. Truck so this was this
- 20:56Speaker 1: was maybe eight years ago or, so AND i got
- 20:58Speaker 1: my hands on a power way AND i picked it,
- 21:01Speaker 1: up And i'm driving out To, california AND i was
- 21:03Speaker 1: maybe a couple hours into the, drive AND i was
- 21:05Speaker 1: realizing that this might be the most comfortable Vehicle i've
- 21:08Speaker 1: ever driven on the. Highway they're really nice because it
- 21:12Speaker 1: was it was reasonably, quiet but it was so roomy
- 21:16Speaker 1: you just you felt like you were in a burke
- 21:19Speaker 1: a lounger going.
- 21:19Speaker 3: DOWN. Idn some really comfortables are really.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Luxurious you're getting massage seats and, really oh, no it sounds,
- 21:29Speaker 2: terrible maybe Because i've never had a car with massaging,
- 21:33Speaker 2: seats but, yeah but, yeah they're not.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Gonna till you've tried. It, YEAH i got.
- 21:37Speaker 2: You but they're great grand touring. VEHICLES i mean for
- 21:41Speaker 2: something that for something that is meant to spend time,
- 21:44Speaker 2: in that is what these vehicles.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Are these are mobile.
- 21:47Speaker 2: OFFICES i, mean think of THE f one Fifty ford
- 21:50Speaker 2: a few days prior to this podcast. RELEASED i want
- 21:53Speaker 2: to say the fourteenth generation of THE f one. Fifty
- 21:57Speaker 2: generally For, ford that leads the innovation and then that
- 22:01Speaker 2: will trickle down into their super duty. Lineup but we're
- 22:05Speaker 2: talking like seats that turn into beds like first.
- 22:08Speaker 3: CLASS i saw that that was.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Impressive the center console like folds forward to create a.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Desk.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yep you, know these vehicles are meant to spend time
- 22:20Speaker 2: in as an, office AND i think as an. Overlander
- 22:23Speaker 2: that's that's WHAT i miss about about having a full
- 22:26Speaker 2: sized vehicle as there's like twelve cup. Holders there's there's
- 22:30Speaker 2: a cup holder, Everywhere like if you think about, it
- 22:32Speaker 2: it will literally. Appear there's places to put everything, imaginable
- 22:36Speaker 2: and they're they're, spacious they're, nice and.
- 22:39Speaker 1: They probably receive a lot of thoughtful engineering dollars behind
- 22:43Speaker 1: them because they're such that they're so important to these,
- 22:46Speaker 1: brands These North american. Brands SO i think it seems
- 22:49Speaker 1: like they really take the time to engineer them. Though,
- 22:51Speaker 1: well a question for, You, Matt so you owned a
- 22:55Speaker 1: full Size. Forward what did you like about? It what
- 22:58Speaker 1: were the modifications that you did do? It you, know
- 23:01Speaker 1: how did it work for? YOU i regret selling.
- 23:04Speaker 2: It SO i had a out of two thy sixteen
- 23:07Speaker 2: f two point fifty with the diesel that was the
- 23:09Speaker 2: last of that body style that had been around since
- 23:12Speaker 2: the late. Nineties you, KNOW i put it on thirty.
- 23:16Speaker 2: SEVENS i did like a four and a half inch icon.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Lift you, know four and a half inches is a
- 23:23Speaker 2: lot for, Me BUT i think it's all relative to
- 23:25Speaker 2: the size of the. Vehicle you, know A tacoma on
- 23:29Speaker 2: two inches is probably like the size, truck, RIGHT i,
- 23:33Speaker 2: mean you, know think you got to think. SIZE i
- 23:36Speaker 2: did thirty. SEVENS i did A titan tank on, it
- 23:39Speaker 2: WHICH i want to say was like fifty seven. Gallons
- 23:43Speaker 2: don't hold me to, that but it. Was it was
- 23:44Speaker 2: a lot of. Stuff did a lightner, rack did a
- 23:47Speaker 2: rhino rack on the. Cab it was, great you. Know
- 23:50Speaker 2: it was The King ranch. MODEL i bought it from
- 23:53Speaker 2: a dealership In phoenix in the. SUMMER i THINK i
- 23:55Speaker 2: paid fifty four out the door and it had a
- 23:57Speaker 2: sixty six sticker on. It, now granted that was the last,
- 24:01Speaker 2: year but now these deals are. Commonplace you. KNOW i
- 24:08Speaker 2: really liked. It the THINGS i didn't like about. It
- 24:10Speaker 2: it was a bit cumbersome to, drive but that was
- 24:14Speaker 2: the old body. Style i've driven a lot of the
- 24:16Speaker 2: newer stuff and they're definitely. Better you, know get used
- 24:20Speaker 2: to turning that wheel multiple. Times you, know they're not
- 24:23Speaker 2: like this, small easily maneuverable, car but they can be
- 24:27Speaker 2: very capable off. Road they can be very fast because
- 24:30Speaker 2: they definitely do not lack.
- 24:32Speaker 3: POWER i like. IT i, mean did you take it
- 24:34Speaker 3: on the trail?
- 24:35Speaker 2: Much i've never really described myself as a, wheeler you,
- 24:40Speaker 2: know SO i didn't do any like obstacle major technical
- 24:45Speaker 2: stuff with.
- 24:46Speaker 3: It you.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Know we had it down In baja a few. Times
- 24:48Speaker 2: we had it In, sonora we had it in the.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Dunes you, KNOW i chased The rebel rally with, it
- 24:54Speaker 2: so that entire course we did and how did it
- 24:56Speaker 2: do with that down a set of tires For but
- 25:00Speaker 2: it was. AWESOME i mean we could carry everything and
- 25:06Speaker 2: then be like airborne and doing one hundred mile an
- 25:09Speaker 2: hour down these. Roads and you know some of that
- 25:11Speaker 2: stuff was kind of close, course and there's no speed
- 25:13Speaker 2: limits In nevada on, dirt so they, say.
- 25:16Speaker 3: But it would just just. Went it just. Worked you.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Know my thing for full size is if it, fits
- 25:22Speaker 2: it gets, like if you can fit the vehicle.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Through, it it's gonna. GO i always say.
- 25:27Speaker 2: That you, know lockers on full sized trucks are, helpful
- 25:31Speaker 2: but if you're in a situation where you're LIKE i
- 25:35Speaker 2: need lockers for this vehicle to do the THINGS i,
- 25:38Speaker 2: do maybe it's the wrong.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Vehicle maybe it's the wrong. VEHICLE i, mean although it
- 25:42Speaker 3: was interesting a couple of years.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Take, yeah a couple years, AGO i was In moab
- 25:47Speaker 1: For Easter jeep.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And full Size invasion does that every?
- 25:50Speaker 1: Year, Yeah And Dave hareton had he had brought down
- 25:53Speaker 1: his single you, know regular, cab you, know no no
- 25:57Speaker 1: extended kept just a single cab thirty five hundred with
- 26:01Speaker 1: a tray back on forty one inch tall TIRES i
- 26:04Speaker 1: think maybe a little bit bigger than maybe forty. Two's
- 26:07Speaker 1: and he had front and rear lockers for, it really
- 26:10Speaker 1: good ground, clearance AND i think he even disconnected the sway.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Bar but he was REALLY i, mean and he has
- 26:18Speaker 1: spent a lot of time driving the trails In moab and.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It he took it everywhere he wanted it to. Go
- 26:24Speaker 1: the only thing he said that was a little creepy
- 26:27Speaker 1: with it was like the tech the sketchy technical descents
- 26:30Speaker 1: because it was so lightly loaded in the. REAR i
- 26:32Speaker 1: could see that he was having the rear end pop
- 26:35Speaker 1: up on him pretty. Aggressively but other than, that he
- 26:39Speaker 1: took that truck everywhere that they were, taking the same the,
- 26:42Speaker 1: jeeps the. Jks, yeah AND i think a lot of
- 26:45Speaker 1: that is because you can fit a forty one inch.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Tigher, yeah you, know a lot of.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Flexibility they're, big but they're not that much bigger than
- 26:52Speaker 2: a lot of stuff these. Days AND i, mean, obviously
- 26:55Speaker 2: Like dave really really knows this. Stuff he's a phenomenally talented.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Drive he's a good, drunk he KNOWS i, mean he's
- 27:01Speaker 2: like The Enzo ferrari of, overlanding like he knows how
- 27:04Speaker 2: to build stuff really really.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Well, yeah you, know BUT i don't.
- 27:09Speaker 2: KNOW i, MEAN i GUESS i still don't think that they're, like,
- 27:12Speaker 2: like if technical for real driving is your.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Thing it should be a different. Vehicle. Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 2: PROBABLY i, mean you, know there's a difference between the
- 27:19Speaker 2: springs of My gladiator that made to flex over the
- 27:21Speaker 2: boulder and the springs on the full sized truck that
- 27:25Speaker 2: are meant to carry the.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Boulder. Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Right you, know you're going to get to a point
- 27:29Speaker 2: where if you're chasing off road, CAPABILITY i don't. KNOW i,
- 27:33Speaker 2: Know i'm going to get a million people are, like, oh,
- 27:34Speaker 2: WELL i take my truck down. This i'm, like, yeah that's.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Great but you, know they have different, purposes AND i
- 27:40Speaker 1: think that from a travel, PERSPECTIVE i think the full
- 27:43Speaker 1: size has a lot of merit and and there's a
- 27:45Speaker 1: couple notable models that are available, now The tremor package
- 27:51Speaker 1: on The Forward Super. Duty what do you think of that?
- 27:53Speaker 1: THING i really like.
- 27:54Speaker 2: It and the thing THAT i like most is you
- 27:56Speaker 2: can go and you can choose your you can go
- 27:59Speaker 2: and build your vehicle and then you can put The tremor,
- 28:01Speaker 2: package AND i want to say anything so if you
- 28:04Speaker 2: want A limited or A platinum with massaging seats and
- 28:08Speaker 2: these trucks do these, days you can just have that
- 28:11Speaker 2: on top of. It with the diesel rear locking. DIFFERENTIAL
- 28:14Speaker 2: i want to. Say it has a torson style. Front
- 28:17Speaker 2: torson style, front really similar to The raptor THAT i,
- 28:20Speaker 2: had and, honestly like modern vehicles don't really lack. TRACTION
- 28:25Speaker 2: i think they're really. Cool love the idea of the,
- 28:27Speaker 2: diesel love the idea of the you, know of that
- 28:30Speaker 2: built in. Winch it might be an, option but it's
- 28:33Speaker 2: definitely on That tremor. PACKAGE i, mean if you're talking
- 28:38Speaker 2: out of the Box overlander in The United states right,
- 28:40Speaker 2: now it comes with a thirty three or thirty Five inchelty,
- 28:43Speaker 2: tire thirty five appropriate spring rates that you can choose
- 28:48Speaker 2: based on your, packaging as opposed to the power wagging
- 28:52Speaker 2: which only comes in with THAT hemi gas, motor which
- 28:55Speaker 2: is a good motor and you, know only has one.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Payloader SO i think the ford is is pretty. NICE
- 29:02Speaker 2: i mean A tremor package with a four wheel camper
- 29:07Speaker 2: drive it around the world. Tomorrow, yeah it's pretty pretty,
- 29:10Speaker 2: dialed ready to. Go and the fact that you could
- 29:12Speaker 2: do this seven to three gas motor if you. Wanted
- 29:15Speaker 2: so that's that's pretty interesting that and that's the same
- 29:17Speaker 2: way that the The bison. Packages you can kind of you,
- 29:21Speaker 2: know figure out YOUR zr two and then add The. Bison,
- 29:25Speaker 2: yeah so that's pretty. CLEVER i think that that's nice
- 29:27Speaker 2: to see that as an. Option that way you can
- 29:29Speaker 2: end up getting the truck that you really. WANT i
- 29:32Speaker 2: think for the.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Guys that, are.
- 29:35Speaker 2: You, know more, wheelers they want to do more technical.
- 29:38Speaker 2: STUFF i think that the power wagon is really just
- 29:42Speaker 2: it's A RUBICON xl in a lot of.
- 29:45Speaker 3: WAYS i, mean you get one.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Of those on a lift underneath and it's it's a
- 29:49Speaker 2: five length that looks nearly identical to what's on on A.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Wrangler it's as wavebar disconnects.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Everything, YEAH i mean for technical.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Stuff as an all around, TRUCK i do have to,
- 30:02Speaker 2: say after owning A gladiator for a, year DO i
- 30:04Speaker 2: almost regret THAT i didn't get a Power?
- 30:06Speaker 3: Wagon? Maybe, yeah. Definitely.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Maybe you, know if there was a power wagon in,
- 30:14Speaker 2: DIESEL i WOULD i, would, Right that's WHAT i would be, driving,
- 30:18Speaker 2: Right but then you also get like the you, know
- 30:20Speaker 2: the cool thing with THE ram is that their payload
- 30:22Speaker 2: capacity is just. Insane and you, know on the twenty five,
- 30:26Speaker 2: HUNDRED i want to, say it's twenty thousand pounds of towing,
- 30:29Speaker 2: NOW i mean IT'S i, know it's it's over thirty
- 30:32Speaker 2: on the thirty five hundred when, EQUIPPED i, mean you
- 30:34Speaker 2: need A cdl for. That basically in the same way
- 30:37Speaker 2: that we won the horsepower, game we won the towing.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Game, sure you.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Know so the twenty five HUNDRED i really likes it
- 30:45Speaker 2: still has that coil.
- 30:46Speaker 3: REAR i think that's such a compelling.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Option you, know A ram twenty five hundred with the
- 30:52Speaker 1: coil sprung rear end regular.
- 30:55Speaker 3: CAB i, mean that would probably be the vehicle THAT
- 30:57Speaker 3: i would.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Build it'd be a regular cab twenty five, hundred flatbed on,
- 31:01Speaker 1: it four wheel, camper forty one inch tall tires al.
- 31:05Speaker 2: They made so nice, inside you, KNOW i, WAS i
- 31:09Speaker 2: was sitting on the rubicom With Jim, morrison who's now
- 31:11Speaker 2: THE ceo Of, jeep used to be THE ceo OF.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Ram in my, opinion when they really turned, AROUND i
- 31:19Speaker 2: think for their older models were kind of, okay, yea
- 31:23Speaker 2: they were, okay, like you close the tailgate and you,
- 31:26Speaker 2: know you could hear you could hear the metal move
- 31:29Speaker 2: and it wasn't very. Nice but you, know and this is,
- 31:32Speaker 2: paraphrasing but essentially they made the. Gamble they heard That
- 31:36Speaker 2: ford And chevy were going to increase the amount of
- 31:38Speaker 2: money that they were spending on the interiors of these.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Trucks so he went and basically, said, okay we're doubling.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Down and this is general, paraphrasing don't quote. Me So
- 31:47Speaker 2: ram ended up putting a lot of money into their
- 31:50Speaker 2: interiors when everyone else pulled. Back so now these manufacturers
- 31:56Speaker 2: are really just playing catch. UP i, Mean i've never
- 31:58Speaker 2: seen a better interior and a pickup truck THAN i
- 32:01Speaker 2: have inside of A. RAM i do think The ford
- 32:04Speaker 2: drive train is maybe a little bit. Better they have
- 32:06Speaker 2: that available ten speed, transmission which is just you're always
- 32:11Speaker 2: in the power. Band, sure BUT i would DO i
- 32:15Speaker 2: would do a twenty five. HUNDRED i think you're, right
- 32:16Speaker 2: they're so compelling and in one thousand foot pounds of
- 32:20Speaker 2: torque in these. Things now in the thirty five, hundred's, yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 2: YEAH i can't even. IMAGINE i, mean the next big
- 32:25Speaker 2: step will be you, know turning these things into. Locomotives
- 32:29Speaker 2: they'll be diesel, electric BUT i can't wait for them
- 32:32Speaker 2: to just go. Electric i'm really interested in the cyber.
- 32:35Speaker 2: TRUCK i have a pre order for one in if
- 32:37Speaker 2: you Follow Elon musk On. Twitter he's an interesting. Cat and,
- 32:43Speaker 2: somebody it was EITHER i want to say it Was,
- 32:45Speaker 2: tesla put out a rendering of a cyber truck with
- 32:48Speaker 2: this tent in the. Back, yeah and you, know he, Responded,
- 32:52Speaker 2: yeah this is actually going to be a. Thing we're
- 32:53Speaker 2: going to make a camper option out of, these so
- 32:55Speaker 2: you'll be able to you'll be able to have air, conditioning,
- 32:58Speaker 2: heating you won't need to do a battery. System they're
- 33:01Speaker 2: going to put solar panels on top of that little retractable.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Sir that'll ADD i want to say ten to fifteen
- 33:07Speaker 2: miles of range a, day which isn't a, lot but for,
- 33:11Speaker 2: us if you're on slow speed technical, trails you're not
- 33:15Speaker 2: using that much energy. Anyways there's no wind, resistance there's
- 33:18Speaker 2: no rolling. Resistance. YEAH i can't wait for that cyber.
- 33:21Speaker 1: TRUCK i, mean, well and with it being is kind
- 33:25Speaker 1: of slab sided and, everything, yeah it. IS i think
- 33:28Speaker 1: it's going to lend itself to some pretty interesting. Concept
- 33:31Speaker 1: it's just.
- 33:31Speaker 2: KOOKY i mean it has over five hundred miles of
- 33:34Speaker 2: range and accelerates as fast as a met engine. Corvette
- 33:38Speaker 2: like it kind of makes everybody else be, like what.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Do we do? Next? Yeah.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Exactly so what would be your if you were to
- 33:46Speaker 1: if you were to build any full sized truck right
- 33:49Speaker 1: now you? Today, yeah and no no, budget no, limit,
- 33:52Speaker 1: whatever what would you?
- 33:53Speaker 3: Build i'd just go buy an Earth. Roamer.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah but IF i was to build, SOMETHING i don't,
- 33:59Speaker 2: KNOW i, mean it would definitely be A ram twenty five,
- 34:02Speaker 2: hundred no contest right now for. ME i mean that
- 34:06Speaker 2: The tremor is really nice AND i like that, stuff
- 34:09Speaker 2: BUT i The. Rams and would it be the power
- 34:11Speaker 2: wagon or, no it would be a twenty five hundred,
- 34:14Speaker 2: Honestly LIKE i you, know everybody loves to, say.
- 34:18Speaker 3: OH i need, Lockers Oh, GOD i have to have. Lockers,
- 34:21Speaker 3: yeah well you could still put lockers. In. YEAH i
- 34:23Speaker 3: can put lockers in it IF i want. IT i
- 34:25Speaker 3: MEAN i would do.
- 34:27Speaker 2: THAT i would probably do a four wheel camper or
- 34:31Speaker 2: or similar in the. BACK i MEAN i like the
- 34:33Speaker 2: four wheel camper, stuff And i'd send it TO. AV i, mean,
- 34:38Speaker 2: Honestly i'd just buy a. Prospector, like if you have
- 34:41Speaker 2: the money and you don't have the, time just, yeah
- 34:44Speaker 2: get it delivered that, way send your check TO av
- 34:47Speaker 2: and be.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Done that's that's my. Thing you. KNOW i like the
- 34:52Speaker 3: four wheel camper. Stuff it's just.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Simple you can take them out really, easily, right you,
- 34:57Speaker 2: know they're not very, pretentious WHICH i THINK i like.
- 35:01Speaker 3: That, well what about? YOU i think it would be.
- 35:04Speaker 1: SIMILAR i was totally smitten By dave's twenty five hundred
- 35:09Speaker 1: and we drove a bunch of.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Those prospectors up to tuk Tuk.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Tek, yeah and we took it on the ice roads
- 35:16Speaker 1: and SO i just HAD i had days and days
- 35:19Speaker 1: of time in those and then we had a prospector
- 35:21Speaker 1: for a couple. Months and it's also really important to
- 35:25Speaker 1: note THAT aev is not sponsoring this. Podcast we just
- 35:27Speaker 1: happened to. Be we just happened to be huge fans
- 35:30Speaker 1: of what they. DO i HAVE av stuff on order
- 35:33Speaker 1: for my gladiator at full.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Price like.
- 35:36Speaker 1: That we just happened to really like the products that they.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Make BUT i think it would be the twenty five
- 35:40Speaker 1: hundred with the coil. SPRINGS i would put at least
- 35:44Speaker 1: a locker in the, rear probably would put one in
- 35:47Speaker 1: the front at the same, time just because while you're doing.
- 35:49Speaker 1: It BUT i would go with the full av. SUSPENSION
- 35:53Speaker 1: i really liked their front bumper a. LOT i like
- 35:56Speaker 1: the modularity of. IT i like the strength of the
- 35:59Speaker 1: recovery points and how the winch mounts to it as.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Well and then you know the wide the wide, fenders
- 36:05Speaker 1: SO i could get the forty inch tall tires on.
- 36:07Speaker 1: There at FIRST i, THOUGHT i don't know IF i
- 36:08Speaker 1: would want, forties but once you drive a full size on,
- 36:11Speaker 1: forties then you can take. It they're just bigger, balloons,
- 36:14Speaker 1: yeah you. Know and it's they're really comfortable on the
- 36:16Speaker 1: trail when you air, down AND i. WAS i did
- 36:19Speaker 1: a lot of the local trails with, it including our test,
- 36:21Speaker 1: track and it it had no. Trouble it was it
- 36:25Speaker 1: was flawless through that. Terrain so it and the reason
- 36:28Speaker 1: WHY i like the bigger tires on the full sized
- 36:31Speaker 1: trucks is these are heavy, vehicles so you need a
- 36:33Speaker 1: lot of floatation if you get into soft. Surfaces so
- 36:37Speaker 1: if you get into mud or you get into snow or,
- 36:39Speaker 1: sand that additional footprint that floatation is really. Critical so
- 36:45Speaker 1: it may be, like, ah why WOULD i need forties
- 36:47Speaker 1: or thirty seven's on a truck like, That, well you
- 36:49Speaker 1: really start to you're getting if you're getting into anything,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Soft so there's definitely a reason to have.
- 36:55Speaker 3: That but that would be my.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Setup, flatbed put a four whel camper on the, back
- 37:00Speaker 1: can off you, go.
- 37:00Speaker 2: So you can use it. That they fulfill so many different.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Purposes like My, gladiator for, example is now a very niche.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Vehicle you, know there's no you, know truckbed campers for you,
- 37:13Speaker 2: know like slide in style sappers for those things because
- 37:16Speaker 2: of the way that the CAB's quite tall in relation
- 37:20Speaker 2: to the. Bed and then you, know you start putting
- 37:22Speaker 2: big tires and stuff on, them and you end up
- 37:26Speaker 2: with you, know basically at capacity where everything that we're
- 37:29Speaker 2: talking about, doing you you still have the capacity of.
- 37:33Speaker 3: The gladiator totally fully on top of it and you
- 37:36Speaker 3: can toe with.
- 37:37Speaker 1: It. YEAH i think they're pretty versatile and they're actually reasonably.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Priced if you, now any new vehicle is, expensive but
- 37:47Speaker 1: if you compare it within the world of new, vehicles
- 37:51Speaker 1: what you're getting for the quality the drive train that you're,
- 37:53Speaker 1: getting the fact that you. Can you can spec out
- 37:56Speaker 1: a twenty five HUNDRED ram for under sixty grand with
- 38:00Speaker 1: fool drive and diesel and everything.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Else that's Six if you're paying sixty for, that you're
- 38:04Speaker 2: getting leather and you're getting a lot of. Options, yeah they're,
- 38:08Speaker 2: really they're, REALLY i think a great value, Personally.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yeah for what you're.
- 38:12Speaker 2: GETTING i, mean it's it's a highly competitive. Segment it's
- 38:15Speaker 2: arguably Like american pickup trucks are arguably the most competitive
- 38:19Speaker 2: segment in the automotive.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Industry in the.
- 38:22Speaker 1: World.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Yeah, right they thrive on.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Innovation there's multiple parties that are you, know you obviously
- 38:30Speaker 2: you have the big, three and then you know there
- 38:33Speaker 2: are things like The nissan kind of came in as
- 38:36Speaker 2: trying to be in BETWEEN x kind of an in between.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Truck so let's talk a little bit about the. Aftermarket,
- 38:43Speaker 1: obviously we've GOT arb makes a bunch of stuff for full.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Size now that's new for.
- 38:48Speaker 2: THEM i HAD i had one of their modular bumpers
- 38:51Speaker 2: on MY f two fifty and it was it was. Fantastic,
- 38:54Speaker 2: aesthetically it looks. GOOD i think it did look. Good
- 38:58Speaker 2: it was really. Nice it performed. WELL i GUESS i
- 39:01Speaker 2: didn't really like hit that many things with, it but
- 39:04Speaker 2: it looked like you could run it into a mountain
- 39:06Speaker 2: in the mountain would. LOSE i really liked THE arb
- 39:09Speaker 2: actually over THE aev just because of animal strike. Protection
- 39:15Speaker 2: they they had that traditional grill for the front. End
- 39:17Speaker 2: at the, TIME i was living outside Of Tell, Yourride,
- 39:20Speaker 2: colorado and there was, elk and there was, deer and
- 39:24Speaker 2: there was things that were in the, road AND i
- 39:27Speaker 2: really valued.
- 39:27Speaker 1: That warren has a lot of great bumpers and. Options
- 39:31Speaker 1: ALTHOUGH i think THE A, v the newest version of
- 39:33Speaker 1: the A E v they DO i have now has
- 39:36Speaker 1: the full FULL i forgot about. THAT i. Forgot you're
- 39:39Speaker 1: right when you would have bought it at that time,
- 39:41Speaker 1: frame it wouldn't have had.
- 39:42Speaker 2: It, yeah, Yeah warren does DOES a does a full
- 39:45Speaker 2: series of bumpers, too which which are you, Know i've
- 39:49Speaker 2: never had anything bad From.
- 39:51Speaker 3: WARREN i MEAN i Put warren witches on.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Like everything everything like because it's just one less thing
- 39:56Speaker 2: to think. About and as far as guys that are
- 39:59Speaker 2: that are really building these you know you'll hear us
- 40:03Speaker 2: talk about At Overland Full. Discosure we are friends with these,
- 40:06Speaker 2: guys BUT i don't think there's another shop that knows
- 40:09Speaker 2: building you, know full size specifically The. RAMS i, Mean
- 40:14Speaker 2: mario has, ourself like you, know they really know these.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Vehicles you, know they do four wheel, campers they do
- 40:24Speaker 2: a bunch of custom.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Stuff they're they're really specializing in maximizing the performance and
- 40:30Speaker 1: the around the world suitability of a full size and
- 40:34Speaker 1: then there's a bunch of well there's of course the
- 40:37Speaker 1: Earth roamers of the, world but then between that there
- 40:40Speaker 1: are camper modules that can be. Fitted so like Earth
- 40:44Speaker 1: cruiser makes an EX, d so you've Got nimble And
- 40:48Speaker 1: nimble came FROM xp camper and has seen a lot of.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Improvements, yeah those are like the XP's ON xp campers
- 40:56Speaker 2: Or nimble campers now on a full size. Truck that's.
- 41:00Speaker 2: It that's a great. OPTION i really travel with some
- 41:03Speaker 2: people on those and and they love. THEM i would
- 41:07Speaker 2: say they're a step above a four wheel camper in
- 41:10Speaker 2: terms of price and and.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Features you, know you're you're looking at more hard sided.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Sure or you, know kind of almost agami style, things
- 41:20Speaker 2: a little bit more modern design, Maybe but and then
- 41:23Speaker 2: of course four wheel, campers which you see them.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Everywhere, YEAH i.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Mean you, know that's peanut butter and jelly for An american,
- 41:29Speaker 2: truck and then you have all the wedge, CAMPERS i,
- 41:32Speaker 2: mean like go fast. CAMPERS i think the one of
- 41:36Speaker 2: note is the fifty ten camper By Goose. Gear brian
- 41:40Speaker 2: earlier has a what do you call The all of
- 41:44Speaker 2: these manufacturers keep changing the, things like it used to
- 41:47Speaker 2: be crew cab and then it was like super.
- 41:49Speaker 3: CAB i don't.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Know he has the one that had cab but has
- 41:52Speaker 2: an actual door and then a smaller. Door, yeah so
- 41:55Speaker 2: it's like an extended extended. Cab, yes we'll call it.
- 41:58Speaker 2: That he has one of those with the fifty ten
- 42:01Speaker 2: camper and it's all built out. Inside it looks really,
- 42:03Speaker 2: GOOD i have to say, esthetically other than maybe the front,
- 42:07Speaker 2: bumper that's one of the best looking full Sizes i've.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Seen, yeah and we'll post a picture of that in
- 42:12Speaker 1: the show. Notes it's flexed out at it and, Yeah chris.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Took all those.
- 42:16Speaker 2: PHOTOS i, remember like it was at the end of
- 42:18Speaker 2: over An Xpo east last year two thoy nineteen because
- 42:24Speaker 2: we won't have shows for a long time And i'm
- 42:26Speaker 2: watching this truck like flex through this stuff AND i
- 42:28Speaker 2: want to say he you, know he has icon suspension
- 42:31Speaker 2: or something on.
- 42:31Speaker 3: It it's really. Good it was. Impressive it Gets, yeah
- 42:36Speaker 3: BUT i don't. KNOW i, MEAN i guess we'll kind
- 42:38Speaker 3: of leave it at.
- 42:39Speaker 2: That you, know full sized trucks are definitely SOMETHING i
- 42:42Speaker 2: think more people should consider as smaller cars kind of.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Bloat the size difference between them is less than you'd.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Think, yeah the difference in size between A gladiator and
- 42:54Speaker 1: A ram twenty five hundred is not that.
- 42:57Speaker 3: MUCH i Remember Chris.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Cordez had His excursion park next to My, gladiator AND
- 43:02Speaker 2: i want to, say My gladiator was, longer longer wheelbase for.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Sure longer wheelbase for. SURE i, MEAN i remember when
- 43:08Speaker 2: that was just a massive, vehicle and Now i'm, like,
- 43:11Speaker 2: OH i like My.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Claudier it's so. Small.
- 43:14Speaker 2: YEAH i think that, they you, know particularly for people
- 43:18Speaker 2: that maybe are getting to the end of the road
- 43:20Speaker 2: as far as Their, Tacoma colorado whatever. GOES i think
- 43:26Speaker 2: it's kind of, inevitable but that that full size kind
- 43:28Speaker 2: of becomes the future in THE.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Us it will for those that pack, heavy for those
- 43:34Speaker 1: that want a lot of features that for those that
- 43:36Speaker 1: want a. Camper if you if you go with a simple,
- 43:40Speaker 1: roof tint or you're a backpacker and you're able to
- 43:43Speaker 1: just throw a ground ten in the, back then these
- 43:45Speaker 1: small vehicles are still great because you gain a lot
- 43:47Speaker 1: of advantage with, that a lot of. Performance but if
- 43:50Speaker 1: you want to put everything and the kitchen, sink then
- 43:53Speaker 1: maybe consider a full size next. Time, yeah we'll take care.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Guys thank you all for. Listening thanks for. Listening we'll
- 43:59Speaker 1: talk to you next.
- 43:59Speaker 3: Time
