- 0:00Speaker 1: Patriots and Eagles got after it today with joint practices,
- 0:02Speaker 1: and it was the Patriots who finished strong. Let's break
- 0:05Speaker 1: it all down. Welcome everybody to the Patriots Camp cast
- 0:16Speaker 1: presented by New Balance. And Yes, it was probably the
- 0:18Speaker 1: highlight of the summer. I would say, at least the
- 0:20Speaker 1: first day of the highlight of the summer, guys. Joint
- 0:22Speaker 1: practices with the Eagles, with a competitive day, Patriots getting
- 0:25Speaker 1: a lot of good work in not so much the
- 0:27Speaker 1: red zone stuff, guys, but overall similar format to what
- 0:30Speaker 1: we've seen in the past. Maybe a little bit less
- 0:31Speaker 1: one on ones, but overall, Paul, what are your biggest
- 0:33Speaker 1: takeaways here from the first day.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I continue to be impressed by the Patriots offense. I
- 0:37Speaker 2: think Drake May and AJ Brown looked more and more
- 0:40Speaker 2: comfortable as the days go by. Pop Douglas continues to
- 0:43Speaker 2: make plays over the middle. I thought it was a
- 0:45Speaker 2: good day for the offense. I that the offensive line
- 0:47Speaker 2: held up pretty well against a much stiffer test in
- 0:51Speaker 2: the Eagles than the Colts. Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Really active day for a J Brownhuh. Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I thought of both offenses who controlled the beginning part
- 0:57Speaker 3: of practice and maybe the two minute drill got a
- 0:59Speaker 3: little clunky there and the defense is punched back a
- 1:01Speaker 3: little bit. But I look at the line of scrimmage
- 1:04Speaker 3: and I thought that the Patriots once again had a
- 1:06Speaker 3: lot of clean pockets to push the ball down the
- 1:08Speaker 3: field from with Drake, May, Aj Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Pop Douglas,
- 1:13Speaker 3: all three of those guys getting targeted down the field
- 1:15Speaker 3: into the mix at some point. So that was really encouraging.
- 1:18Speaker 3: You know, it's one thing to do it against your
- 1:20Speaker 3: own guys day in and day out, but that's a
- 1:23Speaker 3: really good front that the Eagles brought here to this practice,
- 1:26Speaker 3: and I thought the Patriots offensive line held their own defensively.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I think we're still concerned about the same things run defense,
- 1:32Speaker 3: pressure on the quarterback. So I would say both offenses
- 1:36Speaker 3: kind of won the day.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I got to echo your the good part because to me,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I said on our pre on our show when we
- 1:40Speaker 1: were going live Paul that I wanted to see them
- 1:43Speaker 1: protect especially inside. We know Carter how good he can be,
- 1:47Speaker 1: Davis big guys, But like Jev said, I thought there
- 1:49Speaker 1: were some clean pockets. Drake had a chance to step
- 1:52Speaker 1: up a couple times to make some throws downfield. As
- 1:54Speaker 1: I said, AJ Brown was involved. I saw some catches
- 1:57Speaker 1: from tomorrow Douglas just you know, overall, I was in
- 1:59Speaker 1: brilliant cur by the offense today.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I thought the regular periods of offense, you know, they
- 2:04Speaker 2: did some down you know, down in situational where at
- 2:07Speaker 2: first downs, third downs, whatnot. I thought the offense was
- 2:10Speaker 2: kind of doing what it wanted to do. Now, unfortunately,
- 2:13Speaker 2: I think the same could be said of the Eagles
- 2:15Speaker 2: offense on the other field. But in the two minute,
- 2:18Speaker 2: it looked like both defenses kind of dialed up, some stuff,
- 2:21Speaker 2: got some pressure at times, muddied the pockets a little bit.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Now you have two guys in Drake May and Jalen Hurts,
- 2:28Speaker 2: who are very mobile, very athletic quarterbacks. So I'm not
- 2:31Speaker 2: telling you these would have been sacks. I don't think
- 2:34Speaker 2: there were a lot of sacks today on either side.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But I think that that's kind of what made the
- 2:39Speaker 2: two minute a little clunky, to use Evans's term. But overall,
- 2:43Speaker 2: very encouraged by the offense, Very encouraged by AJ Brown.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, before we jump into the two minute drills, the
- 2:47Speaker 1: dueling two minute drills out, just to pause point about
- 2:50Speaker 1: the defense, I felt like you know, we saw some
- 2:52Speaker 1: RPO stuff that was like there was a lot of
- 2:54Speaker 1: space inside. There was one screen pass that it felt
- 2:57Speaker 1: like he was gone a lot of space inside against
- 3:01Speaker 1: the run, against the run, similar to what we saw
- 3:03Speaker 1: against the Colts A little bit.
- 3:05Speaker 3: About Yeah, I would say that was probably the thing
- 3:08Speaker 3: that stood out to me the most was Shipley and
- 3:11Speaker 3: Sakuon Barkley were kind of doingever they wanted in the
- 3:14Speaker 3: run game and those run periods. And then we also,
- 3:16Speaker 3: you know, we talked about, you know, during practice then
- 3:20Speaker 3: they have to dial up blitzes to get pressure on
- 3:22Speaker 3: the quarterback, and I felt like the Patriots standard rushers
- 3:26Speaker 3: rushes weren't really getting home, you know, those four man
- 3:28Speaker 3: standard rushes. So we'll see. But the run game I
- 3:31Speaker 3: thought got better as practice went on. For the Patriots defense,
- 3:34Speaker 3: it was started slow and then they started to stuff
- 3:37Speaker 3: some runs in the second run period. I thought, so
- 3:39Speaker 3: maybe some improvement, maybe a little bit of maybe you know,
- 3:42Speaker 3: pick me up on the sideline type of thing. Maybe
- 3:45Speaker 3: they weren't ready to go out of the gate. But I,
- 3:48Speaker 3: like you guys said about Drake May you know, aj
- 3:50Speaker 3: Brown thought the best throw between those two guys off
- 3:53Speaker 3: his back foot just floating the ball. Now, if there's
- 3:55Speaker 3: some pressure there, I don't know those guys would have
- 3:57Speaker 3: gotten home or not. But just threw a ball in
- 3:59Speaker 3: the bucket over aj Brown's outside shoulder and dropped it
- 4:03Speaker 3: in there against pressure. They hit a crossing route earlier
- 4:05Speaker 3: on in practice to aj Brown right and stride with
- 4:08Speaker 3: the defender right and coverage there a really good throw
- 4:11Speaker 3: Dobbs down the left sideline on a big play. So
- 4:14Speaker 3: when you see those plays being pushed down the field
- 4:17Speaker 3: and the ball being pushed down the field, you usually
- 4:19Speaker 3: think the pass protection was probably pretty solid if they
- 4:22Speaker 3: have the time and the ability to push it down
- 4:24Speaker 3: the field like that.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And I just would look at those kinds of plays
- 4:27Speaker 2: and I can easily envision seeing that in the regular season.
- 4:30Speaker 2: That's the kind of offense to me, that is sustainable.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It's not you're throw one up and a guy made
- 4:35Speaker 2: a play, or you know, you know, the quarterback made
- 4:38Speaker 2: a great play to escape the pocket, got off platform,
- 4:41Speaker 2: bought some time, and someone squirt it loose. These were
- 4:44Speaker 2: regular plays, as Evan said, where Drake may had time
- 4:47Speaker 2: to survey the field, read the coverage, and find the
- 4:49Speaker 2: open guy.
- 4:50Speaker 3: They hit the one to Dobbs. Sorry, but the one
- 4:52Speaker 3: to Dobbs was really encouraging to me because I think
- 4:54Speaker 3: he looked off the safety in the middle of the field.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He had Brown and Dobbs both on vertical routes on
- 4:59Speaker 3: the out side, and he started looking at Brown. The
- 5:02Speaker 3: safety move with Brown, and then he came back and
- 5:04Speaker 3: hit Dobbs on the one on one. If you have
- 5:06Speaker 3: the amount of time in the pocket to do that,
- 5:08Speaker 3: then that tells you that the pass protection was pretty
- 5:10Speaker 3: solid exactly.
- 5:11Speaker 1: The overall sure didn't look like two years ago and
- 5:13Speaker 1: joined practice against the Eagles when Eagles pretty much had
- 5:16Speaker 1: their way. Patriots certainly competitive. Let's talk about the final
- 5:18Speaker 1: two minute drive one oh five need a field goal.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Starting out at your twenty, we saw both the ones
- 5:23Speaker 1: on both teams, and then we saw the twos as well.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Nice job here by the ones. I thought it was
- 5:28Speaker 1: a little bit clunky, Paul, you said there was a
- 5:29Speaker 1: little bit of pressure. Maybe that hadn't quite popped up earlier.
- 5:32Speaker 1: But got a shout out. Andy boorg Gallas hitting both
- 5:34Speaker 1: field goals at the end, the first one and fifty
- 5:36Speaker 1: three yarder, the second one fifty seven yarder with the
- 5:38Speaker 1: twos as well, so two good kicks for him. We
- 5:41Speaker 1: know he kind of yet kick bounce back for border Gallis.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I didn't think that two minute was great.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I thought the first throw, it's either a bad throw
- 5:49Speaker 2: by Drake or a bad read by Romeo Dobbs as
- 5:52Speaker 2: he sort of cuts in maybe looked like he was
- 5:55Speaker 2: trying to protect him from the safety who was right there.
- 5:58Speaker 2: But anyway, I thought it was a ball Dobbs could caught.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Looked like you got both hands on it, So that's incomplete.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Next play is across to Douglas, looks like he's open,
- 6:05Speaker 2: he's got a step, throws really low, kind of takes
- 6:07Speaker 2: him to the ground, he stumbles, falls. I think Evan's
- 6:10Speaker 2: right nowhere nearer first down now because of the drill,
- 6:13Speaker 2: they moved it across the thirty yard line and gave
- 6:16Speaker 2: him a first down.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So instead of third and three or four, and you.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Haven't even really started a two minute drill that you know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: because it's practice, all of a sudden, you get something started.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I thought there were some plays there that looked like
- 6:28Speaker 2: the pockets started to get a little leaky, but the uh,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, I think situationally, they set up the field goal,
- 6:34Speaker 2: but good on bord Gallas were making them.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw it the same way. I felt like
- 6:38Speaker 3: they moved the ball up and then they put more
- 6:40Speaker 3: time on the clock, and then it felt like they
- 6:42Speaker 3: wanted to get the situation of the fire drill field
- 6:45Speaker 3: goal and get that off and see how that operation looked.
- 6:48Speaker 3: So ye Will probably said, hey, can we just play
- 6:50Speaker 3: out this situation. I thought the defense though, got to
- 6:53Speaker 3: stop I think hanging up with past defenses. Yeah, so
- 6:56Speaker 3: they legitimately got stops, and I thought that was the
- 7:00Speaker 3: practice where you saw some of the issues with the
- 7:03Speaker 3: Eagles offense in terms of handling pressure and blitzes and
- 7:06Speaker 3: things like that. They're installing a new offense and I
- 7:09Speaker 3: think that's been a big hot button topic in Philly,
- 7:11Speaker 3: is that they don't have a lot of answers to
- 7:13Speaker 3: blitzes and hot receivers and things like that. So the
- 7:16Speaker 3: Patriots dialed up some blitzes and they were able to
- 7:18Speaker 3: get home on a lot of those blitzeres in that
- 7:21Speaker 3: one minute drill, and they had a couple pass breakups.
- 7:23Speaker 3: So that was encouraging to see. I mean, on the
- 7:26Speaker 3: one hand, you could say, well, they need to dial
- 7:28Speaker 3: up pressure to get to the quarterback. But when they
- 7:31Speaker 3: did blitz, it did get home. So I think that
- 7:33Speaker 3: was incouraging takeaways too.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Kevin Byer talked a lot about those. Craig Woodson was
- 7:37Speaker 2: around the ball. I think he had two picks. One
- 7:38Speaker 2: of them might have been in seven on seven. But
- 7:41Speaker 2: just good to see the Patriots' secondary around the ball
- 7:43Speaker 2: a lot. And I did think I think Kevan you
- 7:45Speaker 2: alluded to this, the defense was better. I thought with
- 7:48Speaker 2: each ensuing period it looked a little bit stronger.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that was what was funny to me. It was
- 7:52Speaker 1: like the offensive defense looked one way during the drills,
- 7:54Speaker 1: then we got to the two minute drill and it
- 7:56Speaker 1: almost kind of flipped a little bit.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I know.
- 7:57Speaker 3: That's why I feel like we're gonna have different takes
- 7:59Speaker 3: than everybody else on practice because we were watching a
- 8:01Speaker 3: little bit more of the defense because they were closer
- 8:03Speaker 3: to us where we were watching practice. But I felt
- 8:06Speaker 3: the same way. I thought the Eagles offense actually moved
- 8:08Speaker 3: the ball pretty well early. They had a big post
- 8:11Speaker 3: down the field, they had a wheel route to Shipley
- 8:13Speaker 3: out of the backfield for a big play. A couple
- 8:15Speaker 3: of big runs by Barkley and then we got down
- 8:18Speaker 3: to the to the tent and everybody said that Patriots
- 8:20Speaker 3: defense dominated, and I.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Was like DeVante Smith, today was complete. Yeah, I mean
- 8:24Speaker 2: they didn't really, most of it was most of it
- 8:27Speaker 2: was underneath.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, no. Mkai Lemon I thought that you know,
- 8:32Speaker 3: it got better though.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He did get it did get better as the practice
- 8:35Speaker 1: went and shout out to Kendall Wildor with the twoes.
- 8:37Speaker 1: He capped off practice with an interception. Nice for him.
- 8:39Speaker 1: John Sanders also had an interception during practice. Guys around
- 8:43Speaker 1: the ball popping up. He's not playing against you.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Know, Mariano Rivera from now on, He's the Tarron Harmon.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Well, it was a great first day of practice and
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm sure this energy is just going to carry over
- 8:52Speaker 1: into day two. We'll see if motions are going to
- 8:55Speaker 1: run high, but Eagles are going to look to punch back.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Patriots looking to get better on defense should be a
- 8:59Speaker 1: great one if you're able to come on down to Foxboro.
